This is what I was thinking. Being cold doesn't make you sick, a weakened immune system and exposure to viruses and infectious diseases does (stress, not getting enough sleep, poor diet, etc.)

But, being comfortable on the bike is important. I like arm and leg warmers because I can install/remove them as needed, and you should be able to get them pretty cheap (these are $9). Tights work too, you don't need bike-specific, anything to block the wind will work. Cover your torso with a zip wind vest. Again, don't spend a lot of money, this one is $12.

If local laws permit, the 319 bridge over the river looks like a safer bet than the 153 due to its much wider shoulder. I didn't see any signs on the onramp prohibiting bikes on the highway, but check with the Department of Highways (or whatever its called in Tennessee) to be sure.

I suggest picking up front and rear lights ($25-30 should get you a basic set), and some sort of high visibility vest (like this or this). If you're riding after dark, some reflective tape on the bike would make you stand out in headlights.

Good luck, and stay safe.

I have a cycling vest that the sleeves can snap off of that I use when running in the dark. I don't see anything quite the same on amazon but this would probably work (I'm not sure why it says "mens"?)
