Your gut instincts are usually right when it comes to stuff like this. I think she is definitely a pedophile and definitely a threat. Is your SIL worried about what happened? Because she should be. Can you talk to her about it?

Here is a link to a good article about teaching kids about good touch/bad touch: http://b-inspiredmama.com/10-tips-for-teaching-kids-about-good/

And the book (Check out the "Customers also bought" section for others if this one isn't your style):

You can call CPS on your SILs behalf, and they can make your MIL move out...but your SIL and BIL would have to put her out of the house immediately, and there is a chance the kids would be removed into foster care until an investigation could be completed no matter what they do. I know that's a scary thing, so I would recommend talking to your SIL and asking how she feels about what her son has said and letting her know you will support her if she wants to stand up to MIL, but that whatever happens, MIL MUST be put out of the house, immediately. Hopefully she will be concerned enough about her kids that she will listen. She is MIL's daughter? If she won't listen, talk to her husband and appeal to him. If they both don't listen, their kids could always tell a teacher or someone at school, and they are mandated reporters (hint hint). Meanwhile, you're also probably right about your own husband not wanting to deal with past trauma. The only thing I know to do for that is therapy, if you can get him to go. It's such a delicate issue, though, so I will defer to others who may have more knowledge about how to handle that.

I was diagnosed at three! At the start of each school year the class would have a sit down up talk about my diabetes the teacher would educate the kids (some teachers would even test themselves to show the kids)! We would also usually read the book taking diabetes to school (https://www.amazon.ca/Taking-Diabetes-School-Kim-Gosselin/dp/1891383280) or even little kids get diabetes (https://www.chapters.indigo.ca/en-ca/books/product/9780807521595-item.html?s_campaign=goo-Shopping_All_Products_RLSA&ds_rl=1254699&ds_rl=1254699&ds_rl=1254699&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIovy894TH3gIVDbazCh1pVQW7EAQYASABEgIjB_D_BwE) ! This was usually super helpful and also a good way to make it an educational opportunity for everyone!

I remember my first day of school I ate my lunch snack at recess and from then in out my mom put stickers to identify to me what I could eat when !

There's a really good book that I've been reading with my kids (10M & 5M) called Fat Head Kids: Stuff I Wish I Knew About Diet & Nutrition When I Was Your Age. It really breaks down nutrition into kid terms and explains why we need to eat healthy things to take care of our bodies. It actually taught me quite a bit I didn't know. So far it's helped explain things to both my kids as to why my 5 year old needs to eat more (he's underweight) and why my 10 year old needs to eat less snacks & make healthier choices (he's beginning to gain a little too much weight). Here's a link to the book on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Fat-Head-Kids-Stuff-Health/dp/0998673404

I think it's curiosity, though definitely crosses personal boundaries.

Have you discussed asking permission?

Maybe get a book for children about our bodies.

And these books may be helpful.

There are others on Amazon.

I just really don't know what else to say.

So awesome! I’m sure you know about stuff like this already, but there are some great relaxation/meditation apps for kids like “Stop, Breathe, and Think for Kids” and Sesame Street’s “Breathe, Think, Do.” Also this cool deck of cards. And so many great picture books about feelings too!

(I don’t have kids of my own, but volunteer with them a lot, and it’s become my mission to give them the skills I never learned as a kid...)

Oh, here. Protein.

u/flaviaknows · 3 pointsr/cookingforbeginners

OK, so you might be a little insulted by the title but this book ⬇️ is just fantastic for learning how to follow a recipe and cooking a variety of foods. The chocolate chip cookie recipe alone is top notch. There's quite a bit of general information in the beginning about cooking which is useful. Videos and websites are great for inspiration but sometimes it's helpful to know why things need to be done a certain way and what result to expect. A more advanced cookbook and a really great read is Nigella Lawson's How to be a Domestic Goddess. Keep at it - you'll only get better.

Amazing cookbook for preschoolers (has every recipe "written" in pictures for kids to follow and then repeated in writing for adults): https://www.amazon.com/Pretend-Soup-Other-Real-Recipes/dp/1883672066

Also I think making guac or fresh salsa is super fun for little kids, and also anything where they get to pour stuff through the hole in the food processor and watch it get squished.

u/iwillfightwithfire · 3 pointsr/IAmA

Here are some of my favorite books that deal with children who have diabetes/work for that age group: #1, #2, and #3.

In terms of snacks, I recommend talking to the parents either via phone, email, or in person. Each child is different, and their dietary needs are very personalized.

Hmm, I can't think of any stories related to food, but maybe you could get a cookbook? A quick search and I found a kid's cookbook on Asian food, not sure if there are better ones out there.

When in doubt, DK has wonderful cookbooks for kids.

Speaking of DK, maybe one of their eyewitness books would be fun. Here is their China book.

You should read a book called "Under the Skin" by Michael Faber. The protagonist picks up hitchhikers and uses that exact method for sorting out which ones she's going to inject with napthane.

u/littleblueorchid · 2 pointsr/AskCulinary

As a preschool teacher I cooked with the kids about 2-3. We made fruit salad, guacamole, pancakes. Also for other ideas you can get some cook books for kids: http://www.amazon.com/Pretend-Soup-Other-Real-Recipes/dp/1883672066/ref=zg_bs_2655476011_16
I own the one above and they have really cook step by step drawn pictures of how to make the food which really help kids because of the pictures.

u/hintlime9 · 2 pointsr/vegan

I'm not sure if your dad was planning on just text recipes, but one of my favorite (cook)books when I was little was Pretend Soup, it was vegetarian not vegan if I recall correctly, but what I really liked was that there were cute little illustrations of every step in the cooking process. This made it a lot easier to figure out what to do, especially when I was just learning to read. Some of the recipes I remember enjoying were "popover" muffins with a strawberry in the middle. Just in general I think breads, muffins, cupcakes, etc. are more fun than something which involves a lot of chopping and use of knives depending on the kids age, may not be something they can do. So I'd go with more simple recipes, pancakes seem good.

I had and loved Honest Pretzels when I was a kid! It’s a delightful little collection of recipes designed for kids who love to cook. I’m sure it’s not the only one on the market, and I hugely recommend it and others like it — using it taught me to cook, but also how to read a recipe, an invaluable skill I still use to this day. Congrats on your culinary child!

More low carb than keto but still in the realm.

Unplugged Play: No Batteries. No Plugs. Pure Fun and also I hear if I cut my hair, Hawaii will sink and then where will all the girls in bikinis go?

u/trappedinthetardis · 1 pointr/toddlers

I received this book as a gift and my 2 year old loves it. The poetry is very playful, with some of the great modern classic poets.

u/angelworks · 1 pointr/AskReddit

There's this a book on time management.

Or you could be more basic and get him a kid's book on how to tell time

Then there's this one about being on time

Those last two together should send a pretty clear message I think.

u/Rhetor_Rex · 1 pointr/funny

Teach your kid to cook.

I highly recommend this book that I had as a child.

u/permiechickie · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

We read the "global babies" book at bedtime, and I think my 4 month old digs looking at all the bright colorful pictures of other babies.

https://www.amazon.com/Global-Babies-Fund-Children/dp/1580891748

I've heard that generally babies like looking at photographs of other babies. They also make a bedtime book in the same vein.

This is an absolutely wonderful book that shows what school lunch is like all over the world. It's available in many public libraries if you don't want to buy it. My daughter and I loved reading it and seeing how the rest of the world's children ate.

https://www.amazon.com/Whats-Lunch-Andrea-Curtis/dp/0889954828/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1479524259&sr=1-1&keywords=school+lunch+around+the+world

I've worked for 15+ years in various school systems in NJ (since fled the state and the [shudder] schools...) and the school lunch was always disgusting except for in one all girls private school in Summit with a tuition more than my mortgage. It's all food that's been precooked that only needs to be heated up to save on costs (ex. labor--not the actual food).

Also a link to a similar article showing school lunches around the world. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/02/25/school-lunches-around-the-world_n_6746164.html

I was mostly joking. It seems like it would make for an interesting story, though! Most of the time when people think of hitch hiking it's... not in a good way. Also this.
