My old scale would "remember" your last weight, and if you were within a pound or two of your previous weight, it would just display the previous weight. I didn't think it was possible for an inanimate object to be lazy up until I discovered that.

Edit: wound up buying this scale, which works the right way, after specifically looking for one that doesn't do this (seems to be a widespread problem).

BREAKING NEWS

I decided to do PPL bro splits during my cut (the other 2-3 days are MMA practice) instead of UL bro split. My work capacity is pretty low it feels like but I think it's because of my meal times.

EDIT: Also, how does this scale look

I'd also like to welcome our newest member of the 2p8 Benchpress Club: /u/stephenfish. Happy for you babe.

Hi there. I was formerly up to 470lbs with ankles bad enough to rule out most exercise. 11 months later I'm 388 and hitting the gym 5 days a week. Here's how I did it.

  1. Diet: I got on keto, but a low-carbohydrate diet would work well too. Your mom needs to just restrict calories. The Mifflin-St Jeor calculation for base metabolic rate says she's burning around 2500 kcal per day if shes 5'7" or above. If she's at 500, she's burning 2900+ kcal per day. Basically, if she can restrict her diet to 2000 kcal per day, she'd lose at least 50lbs in her first year without any exercise at all.

  2. Basic Exercise: I didn't immediately start heavy lifting followed by hard cardio or HIIT. When I first started losing weight, I could only do the stationary recumbent bike. Somewhat slowly. My ankles would ache just walking in the gym, and they would get swollen and I'd sprain them trying to even do the elliptical or treadmill, so I'd bike. For the public embarrassment, I highly recommend Planet Fitness. When I started working out I was super self-conscious about how I looked working out. The amount of other big people at Planet Fitness really takes the edge off. Once you've evolved to where Planet Fitness equipment doesn't suit your fitness goals, you're more confidant and other gyms don't seem so bad.

  3. Positive Routine. Some things that helped were a good routine. As I said before, I started my fitness journey at Planet Fitness. I did the black card membership (only $20/month total) and every time I was done with a workout, I'd go get a hydro massage. The massage would help my back while giving me the positive reinforcement I needed to keep working out (I'm here for a massage, might as well bike for 20 minutes first). I think it goes without saying that this reward should NEVER be food. For milestones food can sometimes be a reward, but food shouldn't be a day-to-day reward.

  4. Face the music: I've found that weighing in often helps me stick to my goals. I have my weight mapped out in a chart, and when I'm weighing in often, I tend to stick to my diet and workout schedules. My periods of plateaus or small gains usually have few data points in them. Get your mom a good scale that wont max out. I used one of these until I could get on a lower-max scale. Also, an app like myfitnesspal means its hard to cheat on the diet. Even on cheat days I log my food. Last weekend was the first cheat day of the year. I ate 4500 Calories. I didn't want to ignore it. I need to deal with the fact that I have more of a deficit to make up this week because of it. Self-accountability is good.

  5. Get a partner: Working out and dieting with others that you have accountability to makes it easier to maintain and harder to cheat on either diet or workout. If your mom doesn't want to work out with you, she should reach out to a friend or relative. I work out with my fiancee and a friend from work, and it makes it hard to say no if one of them wants to go work out.

    TL;DR

  6. Keep calories at 2000 or lower. Reduced sugar is best.
  7. Find an exercise she can do. Recumbent bike worked for me while I couldn't do other exercises.
  8. Add some positive non-food reward for staying true.
  9. Self-accountability is required.
  10. Accountability to friends/family is motivating.

This last year I've accomplished more than I ever thought possible. It's changed who I am as a person. Last February I would have thought someone was joking if they told me I'd be 80lbs down, much stronger, and wearing much smaller clothing.

Let me know if you want to talk privately. Hell, if you live near Tucson, AZ I could go do some cardio with your mom.
u/PlatosApprentice · 11 pointsr/weightroom

Welp, BBB W1D1 in the books. Those 50% 5x10s are surprisingly shitty. Also did some good mornings for the first time in forever. My workout felt amazingly shitty.

Edit: Anyone have any recommendations for a scale? I'm trying to dial-in my BW and drop some pounds. I've had this one in my cart for a while, but haven't pulled the trigger. Thanks

We have this one from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N1UX8RW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Each of us use it and it tracks separately on our phones. Works great

u/Cro370z · 10 pointsr/intermittentfasting

It’s relatively easy. Many people think it’s super hard but it’s not. When you get hunger cramps you’re actually thirsty so drinking a lot of water is key. What helped me the first few weeks was sparkling water (La-Croix) with 0 calories and sugar. After about 3-4 weeks your body adjusts. Black coffee also helps.

My number one advice for all of you guys is buy a smart scale because it helps you keep track not just of weight but BMI, Body fat, etc. it really motivates you. Every 2-3 days measure yourself in the morning after taking a piss and you have to be fully naked no socks for accurate measurements. Maybe one day I’ll make a video on my experience with more tips as I see a lot of people struggle with this. Good luck!

u/TiedinHistory · 9 pointsr/loseit

Started at 380, but I think the same theories still apply.

  1. I don't have a good answer for this one. I think a lot of it depends on budget and how accurate you need it to be. The My Weigh XL-550 seems to have solid (if not spectacular reviews), a low price point, and looks like a good fit. I can't really vouch for it though.

  2. Good question. In my opinion, when you get to 350, 400, 450+ pounds, everything gets cut at once. I have a few reasons for this

-People (like you and I) don't get to that weight due to a single bad habit. I don't think anyone can realistically eat enough cake, or drink enough soda, to account for that drastic a weight gain. Cutting out Coca Cola or Ice Cream will have good effects, but it's often either one of many problems, or the symptom of a greater, overarching problem. Don't treat the symptom, treat the cause.

-I think the psychology behind it turns out poorly either way. Let's say you gave up cake for a month. If you lose 5 pounds, you may attribute it to the cake and may not want to give anything else up. If you don't lose 5 pounds, it feels like you sacrificed a food you love for nothing.

-I think "cutting out" is a bad way to look at it. When I started, I did cut out everything, and then eventually re-added it at smaller, realistic portions. But ideally, you will be able to live a lifestyle where you can occasionally have the foods you really like. If you get to a point where you cut out pie, you will miss it, and you may want to return to it. Occasionally having a slice of pie isn't a death knell and may be better, once in a while, than letting the pie consume your mind.

As I said, once you get above three bills, your diet should be a lifestyle change. Someone who's 5 pounds overweight can say "OK, let's cut out soda". Someone who's 100+ pounds overweight needs more drastic, core changes and adopting a new lifestyle is important to that. If you cut out soda, it's not going to change much if you get your sugar and carbs from other sources. Drastically cutting down on sugar and carbs will get you places (for instance).

  3. For me, I lost my first 100-ish pounds by diet and daily walking (our campus had hills). I didn't set foot in a gym until I was 280-290, and still, most of my exercise is cardio (and honestly, it means very little unless you're eating correctly. I've lost 30 pounds in the past 3 months and worked out less in those months than in the ones where I kept my weight).
u/CabinFeverBob · 8 pointsr/keto

Just did a quick search and came across this one that weighs up to 550lbs for $38 with free shipping. Great reviews too. http://www.amazon.com/My-Weigh-XL-550-Talking-Bathroom/dp/B0014ZQH84

u/quarl0w · 8 pointsr/AppleWatch

I use a Bluetooth scale and weigh myself every morning. It synced the data into Apple health. It wasn't expensive.
1byone Digital Weight Scale

I have been tracking my weight since I got the Watch.

I started at 294 in January. Had a wake up call, and started to eat better then. When I got the Watch in February I was down to 287. I kept going with the Watch, and making sure I was active.

I added in calorie tracking with LoseIt because I wasn't happy with my rate of progress. That accelerated the weight loss.

Here is my weight tracking for this year. Starting at the highest I have been (294). I separated out just the section where I added exercise (up from none), and the section I added calorie tracking. The trend lines show the difference. It's not huge, but is distinct.

This is the greatest scale I have ever owned. Flawlessly accurate. The company is solid as well. I highly recommend it.

For lulz, click here - 1 star reviews.

>Like several others who have complained, my body fat percentage increased by 7% on this scale. Because my fat % is now so much higher than on my other scale, my water weight is also off.

>I have had to return 2 of these scales in a row (black model) because they are defective. They add 25-40 pounds to the actual weight

>No matter WHEN I step on the scale (morning or evening) my weight stays the same. This is just not possible. I followed the instructions to a "T" when setting this up.

>Thought it'd be cool, especially with the hydration and body fat measurements, but it doesn't give me an accurate reading of my weight. I checked my weight with a scale at the gym and my old one, and this one is about 5 pounds off for me and about 9 pounds off for my husband. What's the point?

That last one make me think her gym is fucking with their scales which is FUCKING HILARIOUS

Vent 1: biking to/from work is 20 miles (round trip) and i've been trying to go to the gym for HIIT/lifting on top of it, but i'm so. freakin. tired. I'm alternating days right now to try and work up to just doing the damn thing, but I'm so tired whines

Vent 2: I got a new scale and got rid of my old one that was a million years old. The new one tells me i'm literally 5-7 lbs heavier than my old one and it's discouraging af.

Digital. My scale has never given me a different reading on the same weigh in, ever! Regardless of placement. This one.

How much over 400 pounds? This EatSmart scale is highly rated and has a 440 pound capacity.

u/coffee_since · 6 pointsr/loseit

Stick with your scale. You've lost 12 pounds. It doesn't matter if you went from 285 to 273 or 269 to 257. You still lose the same amount of weight.

In the meantime, you should really upgrade to a digital scale. They're relatively cheap. They last forever. And they're more accurate.

Here is one for $20:

u/cheerful_cunt · 6 pointsr/xxfitness

Ive used and liked this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F3J9G1W/

However, different reading can be due to an old battery or using it on an uneven surface. Even if you are using it somewhere solid like on bathroom tiles, the floor can still be uneven - I'd check that it actually doesn't wobble before using it and see if it still gives you inconsistent readings before buying anew one.

u/vivalasita · 6 pointsr/xxfitness

I own this scale from Amazon. It's less than $30 and I've had it for two months now. Beyond its body fat readings, which I'm not sure of the accuracy of most scales, the Bluetooth feature is really helpful for recording results to your phone in apps like Apple Health or My Fitness Pal. The scale also has a phone app that is pretty decent by itself; again, like any piece of technology, it will not be 100% accurate but if you're measuring yourself as well as weighing yourself consistently it can certainly help with organizing your data trends wirelessly.

u/n3xtday1 · 6 pointsr/loseit

I use this $24 scale that automatically connects to my phone via bluetooth when I step on it and automatically inputs my weight and a number of "body composition" measurements. If you're not in the app when you do it, it will store the data and sync it the next time you step on it with the app open. I've had it over a year, replaced the batteries once and never had a problem with it. I actually can't believe it does all that for the price.

I have one of the Eatsmart scales and it is very accurate. I let it re-calibrate every time I use it. Tap it, let it re-calibrate, then weight. On a very rare occasion it will be off a little. I weight myself twice and if it gets the same both times I record that. On a rare occasion it will take three weigh ins to get two that are the same. Make sure you are standing up straight and standing still. Also weight wearing the same thing for each weigh in, for me that is just my boxers.

Scale I have and would recommend: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0032TNPOE

If your partner is not attracted to your more healthful appearance it is time to discuss it with them and consider a new kind of weight loss (ex partner).

u/Ken_Thomas · 5 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I got an EatSmart Precision Plus - mostly because the screen lights up when you step on it, so I don't have to turn on the lights to see the readout, but also because I was kind of blown away by the Amazon review score. 5 stars with over 7000 reviews is unreal.

But anyway, the part that is relevant to you is that the platform is really big. Plus, it's consistent and seems pretty reliable.

u/pretzel · 5 pointsr/startbodyweight

Great idea. Would do one myself if I had the time!

Were I to do it for myself, I'd:

  • Have all the exercises in the list, but also allow for users to add in their own exercises (I have problems going from pushups to elbows-in/diamonds so am doing an extra "close" push up, to help get me there)
  • Allow me to level up by 1 rep (or 2 reps on pushup/dips!) or allow me to repeat if I'm cheating too much
  • When I do my workout I always have a stopwatch on besides me so I know how long a gap I am having between sets. It would be great if I could be in workout mode and it tells me what I should be doing in my next set, and then how long I should be waiting for. I guess I'd want to tap that I'm starting and that I've finished. Might be nice if it how long an exercise took so if everything was in sync I could do it completely hands free (at the moment when I am done I try to remember when I finished so I can wait a minute, but sometimes after a particularly hard set I forget!)
  • Other ideas with workout mode:
    • I want to be able to override the gap between sets (Some are ok for a minute, sometimes I need a bit longer...)
    • I want to be able to handle exercises that need to be done on each leg (eg: single leg squats, I do my left side then my right side or vice versa - same with side planks)
    • Need to be able to pause if I get a phone call.
    • Handle my warmups for me as well!
    • Allow me to input my weight/BMI/water %/fat % (I have one of these)
    • Allow me to split up my routine (I do push [squat/pike pushups/pushups/dips] one day/pull [the rest] the next so I can workout everyday for 30 minutes instead of everyother day)
    • Sometimes I skip a stretch or do it shorter so let me move on (also note some stretches are both arms, some are single arm)

Good luck and any other qns or if you want me to play with it latter on feel free to PM me!
u/TehJams · 5 pointsr/keto

I bought this Weight Guru scale from Amazon. So far it's pretty nice. Looks good, feels sturdy. And it has an app that can read an image from the scale (through your camera) that can keep track of your weigh-ins.

u/seeker1938 · 5 pointsr/AppleWatch

I would be very interested to know how you accomplished that.

I have a Weight Gurus scale...

https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Connected-Solution-including-Backlit/dp/B00N9ENKDI/ref=sr_1_3?crid=11J292QVF2TBO&keywords=weight+gurus+scale&qid=1555072208&s=gateway&sprefix=weight+guru%2Caps%2C121&sr=8-3

...and have downloaded the Weight Gurus app to the iPhone and it syncs my weight, BMI, etc. to my iPhone via that Weight Gurus app.

When I go iPhone > Apple Health.app \> Sources, I see Weight Gurus there.

When I continue to the next screen, Weight Gurus, I see I have allowed it to write and read the following data: Body Fat Percentage, Lean Body Mass, and weight.

Where, in the Apple Health.app, do your find your weigh-in data?.

u/gooberfaced · 5 pointsr/loseit
  1. I have been very happy with this model for $20.
  2. It takes time.
The longer you stick with this the more you will respect yourself. You just need to accept the fact that the past can no longer be affected- you've done what you've done and there's no going back. But you can affect your future and by doing so again and again your self esteem will gradually improve.
    Measure yourself!
Often we cannot see changes in the mirror but a tape measurer will not lie and that can force you to understand that you are doing it and for that you can be very proud.

u/bladedrummer · 4 pointsr/loseit

You can really google that information, or just look it up on amazon. I mean, there are scales with 25k reviews, over 4 stars and under $30. What can we possibly say that isn't covered by that amount of data?

One
Two

u/Slust · 4 pointsr/Fitness

Absolutely. This shit's hard, but it's all doable.

Set your goals, figure out your plan to achievement, but remember that you're going to fail every now and again. This is normal. Just take it one day at a time.

Here's a few more tools I personally needed in my belt before I really began to start gaining serious momentum.

A food scale - The best thing you can do is spreadsheet out your food you eat in a day. Christ, this was so hard for me, but adding up the nutritional information on to-the-gram portions was the ultimate step to weight loss. Is it boring eating the same shit every day? You betcha. But it all feels right when you start to...

Weigh yourself every morning after you piss and log it in a spreadsheet This was like the last piece of the pendant I needed to unlock the giant door of "Discipline". Holy fuck, I cannot understate how important this was for me. Being able to look at where you were yesterday, or 14 days ago, and see with actual fact where you were... Eating the same shit every day strictly for nutrition all of a sudden became okay to me. I suffer from massive depression, and food was my big comfort. But seeing this data just greased the cogs and the machine began to move with a speed I couldn't manage in the year prior.

On the plus side, my entire diet is available at Costco. So even though it takes time to wash pounds of chicken, weigh it out to 300g (+/- 10g) and bag it up, I'm saving a ton of money in the process. Chicken there is $2.99/lb, at Safeway it's $7.29/lb. I still buy my broccoli there, though, because $2.49/lb is totally acceptable given the taste. Cutting up crowns of broccoli and steaming them is infinitely more tasty than the pre-cut florette bags.

Good luck, man. I wholeheartedly mean it. It's tough going, but if you are absolutely fed up with the current state of your body and lifestyle, the progress means so much.

u/alovejoy · 4 pointsr/keto

Correct me if I’m wrong, OP, but I believe it’s the Renpho Body Fat scale. It’s super cool, I use it too!

u/alexanabolic · 4 pointsr/nutrition

I found caliper to be the more precise of all way of measuring, I have a couple of model, but they are kind of hard to use in a consistent way.

Like you, I want to monitor my progress, especially monitoring that I am not loosing muscle or a minimum amount while cutting fat. In the past, I did loose a lot of muscle while loosing the last 20 pounds, so this time I just want to be sure this is in check.

Unfortunately, using caliper is kinda a pain in the ass to use and the slight variation in pitching the fat, or the emplacement and the measurement is off and hard to compare.

Personally, I am using this body fat scale:

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01N1UX8RW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It measure your weight and you body fat, your lean body mass, etc and it sync with your phone automatically. Bio Impedance is not reliable if you want to know your true bodyfat percentage (can be off by +- 4%), but to track your progress it is awesome if you use it in the same circumstance. I weight in the morning at the same time every morning after I wake up and pee. On the other hand, in my case, the bodyfat this scale is estimating me is the same as what I measured using my calipers. So for me, it is pretty accurate while being very cheap and very very convenient.

u/mox1979 · 4 pointsr/1200isplenty

What I find interesting is that there are numerous brands that seem almost identical on Amazon. The apps are even the same.

Example: https://www.amazon.com/RENPHO-Bluetooth-Bathroom-Composition-Smartphone/dp/B01NALRONX

I personally can't stand the graph in the app, so I sync the app with a fitbit account even though I don't have a fitbit. The Fitbit account in turn can sync with trendweight.com. So automatic data entry at TrendWeight without having to spend $130 on a scale.

And I would recommend not paying attention to any of the additional data that is provided by the scale. Weight is consistent and accurate, but even the formula used for BMI seems slightly off, not to mention that there's zero chance that any of the many other data points are accurate and it would be unrealistic to expect them to be.

u/Vlad_the_Homeowner · 3 pointsr/smarthome

>If I was you I'd just buy some Withings scales

Just looked up the one I have - yup it's a Withings. Works great, syncs with my Garmin and Strava apps (compatible with lots of different health apps), can do multiple people, and it's $60. If OP just likes DIY, knock yourself out, but considering there's a product on the market likely as cheap as you could DIY, why not put your time into other projects.

Edit: here's one for $25 that has over 11k ratings.

http://www.amazon.com/Eatsmart-Precision-Bathroom-Technology-440-Pounds/dp/B0032TNPOE/ref=sr_1_2?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1313592795&sr=1-2

I second the EatSmart Scale but I got a slightly different one. Great scale, wide base, and excellent customer service.

Also, it's slim enough that my bathroom door opens overtop of it so I have more flexibility in where I place it. High weight limit, too!

u/blurfocus · 3 pointsr/keto

The most consistent scales are the doctor's office style balance scales like this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Healthometer-402KL-Physician-Scale-Height/dp/B0009MFUZY

One nice thing about this type of scale is that you can leave the slider at your previous weight. As soon as you step on, you'll know if you gained or lost without having to adjust the slider since the indicator arm will tilt up or down (or stay the same if your weight hasn't changed).

These are much pricier than the spring or strain gauge scales, but more accurate and more consistent.

For digital bathroom scales, I've found that this one matches my balance scale results fairly well:

http://www.amazon.com/Eatsmart-Precision-Bathroom-Technology-440-Pounds/dp/B0032TNPOE

Bonus is that it handles up to 440 pounds.

u/luigitheturtle · 3 pointsr/Fitness

I've been using this one for about a year now and its served me just fine. Needs to be re calibrated every so often if you accidentally turn it on without weight, but that's easy and takes less than 30 seconds.

I bought this scale 3 years ago and it's been amazing. Always accurate.

2nd this. I've had this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0032TNPOE/ref=cm_sw_su_dp for about 8 months & I love it. My parents bought one too.

I initially thought the massive # of reviews was a bit weird (I think there were exactly 1200 when I bought mine), but they actively encourage customers to do an Amazon review. In fact, there was a "Please Review!" note in the box when I got mine, and I did (which is rare for me) because it is a great scale for a really reasonable price.

u/Rawrtin · 3 pointsr/loseit
  1. Read the FAQ. It's full of useful information.
  2. Buy a scale. This one should probably work for you. http://www.amazon.com/Eatsmart-Precision-Bathroom-Technology-440-Pounds/dp/B0032TNPOE/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1348544133&sr=8-4&keywords=weight+scale+500
  3. Find your BMR.
  4. Always strive to burn more calories than you consume each day.
  5. Be patient. Though at your weight you should be able to lose weight pretty fast considering your bmr should be very high. Just be dedicated with your diet and you'll do well.

Got it off amazon a few months ago. Big blue screen, wide platform for big feet. Pretty happy with it. I'd definitely recommend if you're looking for something simple. $36.95 and prime eligible.

u/pinguemcecidero · 3 pointsr/loseit

Cheap scales can do this! I had a cheap one and it was the same. Move a centimeter and I gained weight, move it back ans saw a different weight. Bought a more expensive one and now it weighs perfectly even on less than ideal surfaces. I can move it around and it's the same everywhere. I love it. [This] (https://www.amazon.ca/Ozeri-Touch-Total-Scale-Black/dp/B003N4AVKE/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1468940772&sr=8-7&keywords=scale+bathroom) is the one. It's got all the fancy stuff which I rarely pay attention to. I do love the tare feature for weighing luggage/pets. It's super reliable for me though which was well worth a little bit of a splurge.

u/matchstick_mind · 3 pointsr/proED

I have this scale from Amazon. It's called Ozeri Touch and I bought it because it tells you your body fat percentage. Though I don't believe it's as accurate as using calipers.

u/shakatay29 · 3 pointsr/xxketo

Buy a new scale and keep it in one spot. You're already all over the map when you move it around, so I think your (not ridiculous) fear of the electric one is valid, but misguided. Scales actually read better when they stay in one spot and don't move around a lot. Also, the floor material can change the scale. Don't weigh on carpets, try to make sure the floor is level.

FWIW, I was also terrified about this when I just purchased my new scale which I absolutely love. I was weighing at the gym with one of those sliding balance ones and was convinced there was a five pound difference. Turned out to be half a pound, and easily attributed to user error. Because your scale is all over the map, think about the peace of mind you'll have once you get a digital scale that you will leave in one place to make sure it stays accurate. You got this!!!

u/iWearTightSuitPants · 3 pointsr/Fitness

I got a decent one for less than $20 on Amazon.

(Well, at least it seems to be decent so far. I'm not a scale expert, I don't know what makes a good scale)

u/AvesAvi · 3 pointsr/loseit

The Etekcity scale is the Amazon's Choice scale, but there's a worrying amount of reviews saying the scale randomly shattered without being touched.

The EatSmart scale has super good reviews praising its accuracy, and a lot less reports of the thing spontaneously shattering.

Anybody have some anecdotes with these?

u/Deacalum · 3 pointsr/loseit

Not OP but I'm also a fan of the daily weigh in and this is the scale I use. I've had no issues with it and it's always been pretty accurate, to the point that it closely matches what the scale at my doctor's office says.

I've had the scale for a little over a year. Never had to change batteries, although the daily weigh in is a more recent habit.

u/acciointernet · 3 pointsr/loseit

I was just struggling with this question too! I think I'm just going to buy another one. I looked on Amazon and bought their recommended one, which had a TON of reviews and over 4 stars.

u/nauticaI · 3 pointsr/proED

I just ordered one from Amazon and love it! I've put multiple weights on it and it's right on the dot. It was a little pricier than I was hoping but I'm really happy with it. I'm not sure it's available on Prime anymore though :(

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_fat_percentage

You can read about various methods used to determine body fat.

My opinion, for a person whos goal is to try and lose weight and track their progress, as opposed to a person who is a doctor or medical researcher or practitioner and needs accurate readings, is that the simplest no hassle method is the best.

As a person trying to lose weight, it doesn't matter if any 1 single reading is accurate to within 0.1% or not, or whether the readings fluctuate based on your current state of hydration, rather, what truly matters, is the average trend over time .... ie the average rate at which you are losing body fat.

This leads me to recommend buying a scale like this one ( note thats a random inexpensive model i found with a search, not endorsing that specific units quality ) that makes it super easy to check ones weight, and body fat percentage, and log it to an app on ones cell phone or PC.

Good luck on your goals.

u/black_eyed_susan · 3 pointsr/keto

I also use the Weight Guru's scale.

You can even set it up so it tells you how many lbs' you lost instead of your actual weight.

u/unrepentant_thinner · 3 pointsr/loseit

I have this one. Just make sure it's on level floor and you always weight yourself in the same spot, in the morning after your morning wee. Make sure the floor is level where you place it...or you might throw yourself back into bed and bawl. Not that I've done that or anything.

u/NeverLowEnough · 3 pointsr/proED

I'm currently looking at this Innotech scale: https://www.amazon.com/Innotech-Digital-Bathroom-Scale-Backlit/product-reviews/B01MFBUSEB/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_show_all_btm?ie=UTF8&reviewerType=avp_only_reviews&sortBy=recent

It has 670 reviews, of which 95% are 4 or 5 stars (90% at 5 stars). It seems that the people who have problems are taken care of by customer service. The only real trouble I see with it is someone mentioned that if you step on it over and over again, it won't show a weight change if your weight has changed less than 3/4 of a pound. While to some extent I could see that being nice for my mental health, I also see myself being skeptical of it.

I have mixed feelings about Eat Smart scales, which are usually under $20. Their kitchen scale has been fine but this isn't the first time I've had problems with their bathroom scale. A few months into owning it, it had this problem. I called customer service, we troubleshooted it, it was broken and they sent me a new one. This was several years (3+) ago and it's been good until now. I'm halfway considering buying another because $20 for 3 or more years isn't bad, IMO.

Wow, that is disconcerting. Obesity is a disease of many causes, and keto mostly addresses the metabolic/dietary cause of excess glucose & insulin. Ever thought about getting your thyroid levels checked? You may want to consider getting a BIA device; that way if you are losing fat and gaining muscle, you may have a better chance of noticing it and keeping up with your plan.

Some more in-depth exploration of the science of obesity may be in order. This video is long, but you may find it highly interesting. Pay attention to the part about caloric intake, delta E, compensatory behavior, and so forth. This is the main reason I don't believe in calorie restriction.

u/serval · 2 pointsr/loseit_classic

Few explanations combined maybe:

(1) You sweat in the shower. You breath out a bit of water. This is probably the biggest difference. Also, you are a bigger guy, so you likely sweat more than others. Was it a long shower (>10 minutes)? That would give you more time to sweat off more water.

(2) Scale affected by temp, humidity, slight movement between calibrations could result in variation.

(3) You shaved or brushed your teeth in the shower ... spit out water and removed hair maybe worth a few oz.

(4) You cleaned off dead skin cells and other stuff ... a couple oz?

(5) Your scale may vary your weight based on how you stand on it ... too much weight in the heel may be recoded lower (or higher) than evenly divided weight. You could experiment.

I've had very consistent results with the Omron HBF-400 (in terms of weight, the body fat % check is less accurate though it is also consistent), but it has a 330 lbs limit.

u/HopNine · 2 pointsr/90daysgoal

Cool site! I seem to fluctate between 17-22% BF. Measurements come from a Omron HBF-400 scale.

BF measurements can vary wildly between different products. The best advice is to pick one method and stick with it. The individual numbers by themselves don't really matter - you are comparing the numbers against themselves over time to identify trends. (If it wasn't obvious my day job involves data analyst stuff. :-P)

u/jminuse · 2 pointsr/todayilearned

I got a fat monitoring scale (this one) and, while I'm sure it's not accurate on an absolute scale, it's consistent. I can watch my body fat increase if I don't work out for a while and then go down after I pick up cardio again.

This relies on you measuring when you're at the same level of hydration each time, though.

u/davedawg2000 · 2 pointsr/loseit

I have this particular model. The weight readings are very consistent, as are the BF% readings. In terms of accuracy, the weight is spot on (calibrated/tested with known volumes of water). I'm going to do a BodPod test within the next week to see how accurate the BF% function is, but I can at least use it for trending purposes :)

u/palmermarc · 2 pointsr/loseit

How big are you? I was well over 400, so I had to buy a special scale. I got this XL 550 from Amazon. It works great.

u/aelbric · 2 pointsr/keto

I bought a Withings scale. The dashboard is free.

u/serume · 2 pointsr/keto

I bought Withings WiFi-scale and really like it. It tells me when it's not on a level surface, it sends all the info straight to my app (and the website, but I don't use it) and it seems trustworthy.

Ofc, it's a bit on the pricey scale (ha.ha.) and I don't trust the fat percentage at all, but overall I'm happy with my purchase.

u/TheForrestFire · 2 pointsr/loseit

This is the one I have. I've gone through a few scales, but this one has been working for at least three to four years now. It's still absurdly accurate, and is hardy enough to exist in humid places like the bathroom.

Greatest purchase I've ever made.

I would stay away from ones that measure stuff other than body weight. It's not worth the extra money just to have all of those crazy inaccurate sensors. Get one that measures weight extremely well. You want all the money to be put into that.

u/SquidThistle · 2 pointsr/loseit

I use this one and really like it. It's not too fancy but it's worked really well for a couple years now.

The only thing I don't like is that I think when you first step on it it calibrates itself because it always gives a higher number. I step off and on again and it'll give a consistent weight after that first time.

u/helloalone · 2 pointsr/loseit

Seconding! This is my scale and I love it. I get the same weight even when I step on it multiple times, so it seems pretty accurate.

u/SnatchThat · 2 pointsr/loseit

I use this one I picked up on Amazon. I find it to be pretty accurate and easy to use. I work in a hospital and have weighed myself here a few times and find the two measurements to be nearly the same. Also, when it's time to change out the batteries, it takes normal AAA's, which I find pretty convenient.

u/SgtWoodcock · 2 pointsr/keto

That withings scale is awesome, but a bit pricey at $160.
I use an "EatSmart Precision Premium Digital Bathroom Scale" that I got from Amazon for $32.95. Amazon.

If I had the extra cash though the withings scale looks freaking awesome.

> So, to start off, I downloaded MyFitnessPal.

Excellent! I like MFP, it's working well for me even with its quirks.

> it's been awhile since I've had access to a good scale for people of my weight

You are going to need some way to measure your progress, eventually! I had a poke about amazon and they're not hugely expensive:

eatsmart scale

this one measures %bodyfat and is on sale!

%bodyfat information is hugely valuable for accurately tracking your progress and adjusting your diet.

> Excersizing has always been hard for me, I have severely flat feet, even my specially made inserts don't do much to prevent masshive pain if I'm on my feet too long

Stationary bike is your friend!

If you can, start walking second daily/daily for 10-30 minutes.

> It asked how much weight I wanted to lose a week, it recommended 1 pound. Is going with 2 pounds a week that big a deal? Do you think it'll be harder?

If you are 5'10" and 360lb+, you should eventually aim for 2lb/week. You may want to start at 1 pound a week to see what it feels like though.

> White bread, frozen things such as chicken tenders, sandwhich meat, cheese, baked chicken, hamburgers.. I used to eat other less healthy things but I've cut a lot of food out due to my chronic acid reflux, I eat a lot of bread and drink a lot of milk because they're relatively safe for me. I also tend to drink two cans of pop a day, though I'm going to try cutting those out.

You can eat, what you can eat. That said, as you lose weight, your reflux may improve.

If you are having trouble working out what to eat, just start with what you already eat, but control the quantities with calorie counting. You will want to do a few initial days of just counting what your current intake level is, so you can slowly lower your intake.

The easiest way to generate meals is to start with some good lean protein, then add some vegetables to that, and some flavouring, but don't forget that sauces count as calories!

Frozen food has the useful benefit of having very detailed nutritional information on the side of the box, and snap frozen vegetables have high nutrient value.

> How do you guys go about snacks? I usually eat something, be it some chips or something microwavable every few hours.

Chips are generally not great, but if you need them, count their calories into your budget. There's definitely a range of microwave foods out there with decent nutritional value (good amount of protein and essential fats).

> Also, what do you do at night when you're trying to sleep but it feels like you're starving?

When you get your eating right, this may be less of a problem. The right balance of proteins and fat help with satiety, whereas not having enough of those in your dinner meal may leave you hungry as you go to sleep.

> it says that I should consume no more than 2290 calories a day. I've used other calculators online though and have seen anything from 2600-2900 calories a day.

You probably have relatively little muscle mass because of your issues with your flatfeet. The main determinant of how many calories you should have is muscle mass. (%bodyfat measurements will let you determine this far more accurately though).

2300 calories per day is probably a good eventual target. However, first you need to measure how much you are currently eating, then work down from there.

> a bit of weight training.

I would suggest with working towards bodyweight squats and lunges. You may or may not be able to do a full movement with your current size, but a few partial squats are safe and will start conditioning your knees and muscles.

Also, try to get your hands on some cheap dumbbells and learning what movements you can do at home. You don't need the gym to lift weight!

Overall it sounds like you have a good attitude and an openness to learning. With patience, time and the right feedback, you can definitely achieve not only your temporary goals, but more than you thought possible!

Reasonably priced, about as accurate as you can expect, wide base and a nice big LCD screen. I've had it for around 8 months now, no complaints.

u/Keroseneslickback · 2 pointsr/loseit

How about exercise? How much do you do?

For scales, I've seen these exact ones in my doctor's office before (alongside the proper ones). Out of like 12,000 reviews, a 4.6/5 score is damn good. Regardless of some problems, it should be a good scale if your luck isn't completely terrible. But with all glass scales: Make sure they're on a flat surface. I personally use the smaller one with a max of 400lbs.

What I can recommend to you is this:

You should speak with your doctor about what's going on. Perhaps they have more insight. If they hadn't done a hormone blood test, they probably would.

As with most "Help, I'm not losing weight" posts, if there's no problem with you counting calories or with your body, then it's down to either: Eating less calories. Or, exercising more. 2000 calories at your weight is quite the cut (at my 6' 233lbs, 2200 calories and that's deep for me). Because of that I'd recommend exercising more. If you're not walking (on top of normal activity) everyday, do so everyday. At least thirty minutes, and an hour is great. More than an hour depends on how you feel.

u/HardHeartedHarbinger · 2 pointsr/loseit

All scales have a % of being off in accuracy, what I find more important is consistancy. If the scale is consistant you can trend loss and that is what is important. I have also found that accuracy drops the closer you get to the max of the scale.

Balance Beam Scales, like this are the most expensive, and the most accurate.

I dont see the one I have at home, but this is close (same brand I think) and it works well as long as I stand on the exact same spot on the scale every time. If I move over or place my feet wrong, the reading is off by several pounds. So I just make sure to do it the same way every time.

u/lunahedral · 2 pointsr/loseit

I use this EatSmart scale and like it a lot. Big light-up display and I've found it's only 0.2 off from the readings I get at the doctor's. It's also been quite consistent for me—if I step off and on the scale again I get the same reading every time.

step 1 is to log everything. sounds like you just started using MFP (although i personally prefer the app lose it!). even if you get the not-planned-ahead food - log it!

step 2 around here is CICO. this will require getting a scale. you don't sound like you're quite ready for step 2 yet (although i know you can do it!) but when you are, here is a bathroom scale rated for 440 lbs, that's under $30. this is so you can calculate TDEE, for which your weight is required.

i have totally been where you are. i've been so depressed i would only leave the house in the middle of the night and i was basically living in a pile of laundry and unopened mail. if you ever need to talk, PM me. sometimes it can be a lot easier to unload on a total stranger on the internet, and i promise i won't judge you because legit, i have been there, and now i'm on my way to losing 50 lbs and i wash my face every day and everything. you've got this.

u/follower94 · 2 pointsr/loseit

The morning after I lift I'm normally about 1.5-2lbs heavier than the day before.

Sometimes its more, for example last week I managed a new PR on my squats, next morning 4lbs heavier (water weight).

I find myself getting stuck in plateaus alot lately as I keep increasing the amount I lift, but eating at 1000 calorie defect a day. What really helps get me through it is I have a body fat scale that gives you a muscle % as well. When my weight is around the same, but you see your bf% drop and your muscle % increase, you almost don't care about your weight. Obviously there not that accurate but there consistent.

I really like this one and haven't had accuracy issues (I leave it on tile in the same place for every weigh in).

It's just the scale. All the 1 star reviewers have the same issue. Even keeping it in the same place gives different readings by +/-5.

I bought the cheapest one I found on Amazon. It was 15ish CAD. Morning of comp it weighed me in at 92.8kg

Two hours later, I weight in at 92.2/4kg.

Not too bad.

u/reggiesan · 2 pointsr/keto

Etekcity (link) has a scale that is $18 and is pretty accurate. Doesn't do anything fancy, but it looks nice and goes up to 400 lbs.
EDIT: Not the best scale. But a good scale.

u/toxik0n · 2 pointsr/loseit

I've been using this scale for about 2 years now and I've found it extremely accurate.

I bought it for use for a workplace weight loss competition, where it accurately weighed about 20 people for weeks. It only gave us trouble for one person who was over 400lbs.

After that, I took it home and my fiance and I have been using it since. It's always been very accurate for us.

Another bonus is that the top of the scale is completely smooth glass, so cleaning it is really quick. Just a quick paper towel wipe, and there are no nooks or crannies to deal with.

I got that thing. I’m not sure how to recalibrate it? But it’s been doing this the entire time I’ve had it. I’m wondering if it’s the floor I’m using but I don’t really have anywhere else to put it because my parents are controlling and would flip out.

I use the [Weight Gurus Digital Body Fat Scale with Large Backlit LCD and Smartphone Tracking] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GBFEMU2/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_O3Zfub19A8ERG) and it's on sale now for $25!

u/hacklete · 2 pointsr/Team_Phoenix

I have a tanita scale (these are generally very good quality) http://www.tanitaaustralia.com/product/um-051/ $99
Its been super accurate so far which is what I wanted after the one I had before that was not accurate at all (much cheaper) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GBFEMU2/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 $40 <-- don't get that one.

If i had to get a new one, I'd get one that syncs with myfitnesspal or fitbit because I'm lazy :P

I also wouldn't trust any bathroom scale to give an accurate bodyweight % they generally aren't any good at that. You should get a bod pod or DEXA scan to estimate body fat.

u/Measured-Success · 2 pointsr/intermittentfasting

I highly recommend this scale.

I bought it in 2016 and zero issues and never changed the batteries. I was on the market for a scale and bought a few and this was the winner. Bottomline, it’s accurate and extremely consistent. (Inconsistent scales are a huge pet peeve of mine.)

u/gold_locket · 2 pointsr/xxfitness

This is the one me and my SO use. It's from Weight Gurus. We both use it and have our own profiles and syncs to our phones (and the iPhone Health kit). We haven't had any issues with it. It measures weight, body fat, muscle mass, water weight, and bmi.

u/topherkeey · 2 pointsr/keto

I use the Bluetooth scale from Weight Gurus.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N9ENKDI/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_awdm_itq1wb08229CS via @amazon

I know it doesn't do fat% very well, but very few scales will do that with any real good accuracy, so it's good enough for my purposes.

u/Milady_Kitteh · 2 pointsr/loseit

I've had this one from Amazon for over 2 years now and it's been accurate and great!

https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Connected-Solution-including-Backlit/dp/B00N9ENKDI

It does have an app if you want to track trends and have it upload your weigh-ins (and sync to other apps if you use anything like MyFitnessPal/etc).

There hasn't been anything scientifically proven that the scan done by scales is harmful to pregnant women. :) In fact, several studies have used bioelectrical impedance on pregnant women for measurements (these are just a few):

Maybe check with your medical provider first, but I had no issues with using a BMI scale during my last pregnancy!

u/StartupDino · 2 pointsr/keto

I bought one of the cheaper smart scales of Amazon two months ago and I've been really happy with it.

Easy enough to set up, and I literally just opened the app on my phone and stand on the thing.

One downside: the companion app is super basic (The apparently it does integrate with several of the bigger health apps)

> Oh and has anyone used Nokia's Body+ scale? It sounds pretty cool but like all techy stuff it costs a pretty penny...!

I have no experience with the Nokia but it seems kind of mediocre for the price, I own this basic one while my parents own this one but if you want features I don't think you could go wrong with:

u/edgarvanburen · 2 pointsr/Fitness

Thanks, that makes sense. I'm a month into a cut (probably will last another month or 2) and I bought this scale. While not perfect I think it's roughly accurate and is at least reflecting my trends, in body weight and body fat %. I take a reading after waking up each morning. So even if there's noise in there, with enough data it should be accurate-ish on the whole?

u/guyman3 · 2 pointsr/fitbit

Well think of it this way, you always see stuff on this sub of people complaining about bugs, and missing features that they want on the CURRENT products, and as you can see they are losing money so it's pretty hard to rationalize whole new product lines like your describing which would require hiring more designers, managers, and engineers, and manufacturing devices... Those are expensive... Not to mention a lot of the things you mentioned have a relatively small market compared to smart watches and fitness trackers so they probably don't stand to profit off of it anyway

That said there ARE some companies that have integrated with Fitbits stuff
Water bottles

Other scales

And you can make apps for their watches

Would be great to see more products built to sync with it

u/stephbethmaz · 2 pointsr/xxfitness

Here is the scale I use from amazon . It measures BF, muscle mass, water weight, and calculates your BMI daily and has an app that will track it all and also links to MyFitnessPal. I love it. Like others said, take it with a grain of salt and it's not super accurate I'm sure but I enjoy weighing myself every day and just tracking my progress. My only complaint is that the scale I think is set primarily to kg and I weigh in lbs, so when it displays my weight on the scale, say i'm 150.0 on the scale, in the app i'm actually 150.2. I emailed the company asking if something was wrong with mine but they just said it's the conversion working once it uploads to the app. Very minor fluctuation but a little flaw nonetheless.

u/XandieG · 2 pointsr/xxfitness

I cannot speak to accuracy because I haven't used any other method of body fat measurement, although definitely am considering getting a DEXA once I'm at goal weight to help with designing my recomp, so if and when I do that, I'll let you know.

But as far as scale stuff goes, I have the Bluetooth Smart Scale by Greater Goods ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N9ENKDI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ). I've only been using it since February 15th. It shows muscle, water, fat, and bone mass as percentages, and those numbers do not add up to 100%. I assume that's because it's double counting water, so I just pay attention to the fat and muscle masses, since that's really what I care about. According to the scale, I've lost 13.4 lbs, 9.9 lbs of which has been fat and 1.3 lbs of which has been muscle. I have it calculate a running percentage, and it seems that 74-77% of the weight that I lose is fat, which seems reasonable to me.

We have similar stats, I'm 5'2.5" and 150.6 lbs. As of today, I'm at 29.2% muscle and 31.2% fat, which seem like reasonable numbers to me, given my body type.

An interesting sidenote: I donated blood a few weeks ago and my weight was significantly down the next day, which I attributed to dehydration, and it took me two weeks to get "back" to that number on the scale. But the body fat/muscle mass/water percentages were almost exactly the same those two times, and according to those numbers, I wasn't dehydrated at all.

u/coldize · 2 pointsr/loseit

Well I don't personally use this one but it's very highly rated on amazon and has all the features you're asking about: scale

u/mrandish · 2 pointsr/keto

Congrats on losing weight!

> I go to rite aid to weigh myself and I probably way the same as I did. (Although I can't remember)

If you want to lose weight consistently and keep it off then you need to get serious. First thing, you cannot manage that which you do not measure. Getting results in anything worthwhile is all about the data.

Here's a picture of me today and 34 days ago: http://imgur.com/a/sRDI1

See that cool chart of my daily weight on the right? It's from a bluetooth bathroom scale that syncs with my phone. It never forgets and I don't have to do anything to have an actionable record of my results. You can get a bluetooth scale for $28 delivered on Amazon. Think of it as an investment in your future. (https://www.amazon.com/1byone-Bluetooth-Wireless-Bathroom-Visceral/dp/B01FHELB56).

> Very lazy, meaning I eat a regular meal some days and some days I'm all in.

Lazy keto gets lazy results. The good news is, doing keto right is simple and almost no more effort than what you're doing now.

Install the free app My Fitness Pal on your phone and start tracking everything you eat. It scans barcodes and already has entries for everything, so it's just a few taps to log your intake. Once you know what you're eating and how that impacts your weight, it's much easier to make consistent and rapid progress.

u/jezekiant · 2 pointsr/xxfitness

It was packaged wonderfully and setup was a breeze; the only "hurdle" is that each user has to setup an app account if they want to track anything. Since it's wifi the data will sync from the scale to my phone no matter where the phone is, and without having the app open. Data can sync from the Weight Gurus app to MFP, Fitbit, and Google Fit which is handy. More importantly, if you log in to the website for the app you can download a CSV of your entries.

I strongly suggest using a scale. Ignorance may be blissful, but awareness is successful.

The scale has a cool app, synchs with Google Fit, which can then synch with Cronometer. I'm sure there are other apps it works with, but that's just how I use it.

Haven't been disappointed and can only blame any inconsistencies on my own behavior. ;)

Hi all
24 5'8 M 215 lbs
Body fat according to the device at LA fitness: 30.2%
Body fat according to this new scale I got: 29.2%

Majority of my fat is around my stomach and my butt/thighs.
My immediate goal is to have a flat stomach (and wider upper body?) And slimmer butt/thighs.

I play soccer twice a week and go to the gym twice/thrice.

At the gym my workout is at follows:
Bench press 40lbs x 5 x 6
Assisted pull ups 60 lbsx 5 x 6
Lateral raises 20 lbs x 10 x 3
Mountain climbers 30 x 3
Squats 20 x 4
Cross body Crunches 10 x 3
20-30 mins cardio.

My tdee at the current numbers is 2700-2800 calories.
I eat about 2000 calories as follows:
Carbs 123.4
Protein 123.6
Fat 52.9
Sugar 74
The macros are going to be a little higher for each category as I have Indian lunch that is not prepared by me but is homemade and on the healthy side so I assume it to be 400 calories which is included in the numbers above.

Given my current targets : to loose fat around my core, should I maintain the current nutrition and exercise or change it and how?
One of my gymbros tells me that I should replace some meals with just protein shake but I need to physically eat something to feel satisfied.

Beginning of this year I was 222 and am 215 now.

Thank you so much! (:

Nice start.

Good selection on timing, nice work adapting to Low Carb (even with a carb day). While I aspire to keto-like carb days (under 50g), I find I'm in the lazy keto range more often than not (<100g)

Are you tracking on Apps?
Do you have a scale (you should be about ready for this sub's favorite: renpho https://www.amazon.com/RENPHO-Bluetooth-Bathroom-Composition-Smartphone/dp/B01N1UX8RW which is on sale right now for 20) 396lbs capacity, it says)
Keep an eye on certain vitamins, minerals and electrolytes. I supplement magnesium and a few other things. with low carb, your whole wheat levels drop which really kills most peoples biggest Mg source.
Healthy fats, eggs, salmon, etc. Keep crushing it.

I'm sure there is a lot of marketing BS in here. I don't know how it could track everything it claims it can. But, I was interested in the app that would easily record and track my progress and the body fat % measurement. I do know from experience that scales can measure body fat %, so as long as it does those things I'm happy.

u/weird_turn_pro · 2 pointsr/loseit

It technically sends it to Fitbit and then Fitbit sends it to MFP. I still manually log my weight into the libra app but I usually wait until my lunch break to log it.

This is the scale I have if anyone is interested. Warning: it rounds to the nearest even decimal on the app but, Fitbit records the actual decimal.

u/imdoingketo · 2 pointsr/keto

Yeah, I definitely am not taking that measurement as gospel, but using the calipers is a pain and I haven't had any other really good way of doing it, so I'm just glad to have something to track. Percentage has been slowly going down from day to day, so I'm trying to pay most of my attention to that.

But here ya go, it works, integrates with fitbit/google fit, and it's pretty cheap. You will need a smartphone, though.

u/rabidstoat · 2 pointsr/weightwatchers

I haven't used it very long so I can't really say if it's a good long-term solution but I recently bought this scale: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N1UX8RW/

It's blue tooth enabled and, though I've not tried it yet, their app claims to sync with the Fitbit app (along with a couple of other apps). I've not used that functionality yet. If it did work, though, it's a much cheaper alternative for automatically syncing with Fitbit, as it's $32 instead of $100.

I also like that it uses AAA batteries. My last scale used those small, round disk-like batteries, and they're a lot more expensive. Plus you can get rechargeable AAA batteries but I've never seen rechargeables for those disc-like batteries.

u/signalwave · 2 pointsr/Brogress

u/Buffalone27 · 2 pointsr/keto

Hey! Congrats on deciding to make a lifestyle change. I just did, too! About to finish week 2 of keto. I’ve lost weight already and feel really great about it! I haven’t followed a specific meal plan, but I have mapped out my grocery lists and stopped eating out at restaurants and strictly cooking my own food, with the exception of 1-2 meals at my restaurant job that I work several shifts a week at. This really helps me count my carbs and calories in the really helpful app Carb Manager.

I feel less bloated without gluten! It’s awesome. I made my first fathead pizza last night with my coworker and friend who went keto too! Having someone else who is willing to undergo the change with me has been more than helpful, especially since my spouse is still eating carbs and sugar in the same apartment as me!

Things that have helped me so far:
-buying a great food scale

-buying an awesome body weight and body fat scale ...this scale comes with an app that shows me statistics like bone density, water weight, body fat %, and weight. It also tracks my progress, shows me healthy/normal levels and percentiles, and more. I really like it. Almost as much as I like watching my weight decrease every few days from keto.

-having a friend or two who are new to keto as well. They have recommended different products to me like:

  1. Skinny girl sweetner
  2. Fiber supplements for when the cheese hits you hard
  3. Tape measurers (simple and common item that won’t deceive you like the scale often can!)

Personal mantras I remind myself to continue keto in a healthy way:
-don’t obsess over the scale. NSV pop up daily and they’re sometimes even better than watching the number on the scale drop. It’s not healthy to let your mood rely on scale results. Once a week is enough moderation in terms of weighing yourself. (I’m struggling hard with following this direction myself)

-make sure you hit your protein quotas! They’re important. You need protein for muscles, and so much more.

-try not to eat sweets at all for the first few weeks. You need to give your body time to stop craving sugar (and it will happen!)

-drink a fuck ton of water. It will help you feel less full at first, and you need it especially to keep healthy while your body transitions from eating carbs to eating fat. Water is your new bff.

-listen to your body. Eat when you’re hungry. If you’re hungry, eat. Don’t starve yourself, you will begin to feel less hungry as you continue on tho. If your eat something that’s keto friendly, but it makes you feel funky, try to feel out different options. You want to feel your best in order to keep up the inspiration to continue!

-last but not least: TAKE PROGRESS PICS!!! I lurk this sub/weight loss subs constantly and I always see ppl talk about regretting not taking more before pics! Once they reach the time to take after shots, they really wish they had a lot more to compare them to!

    Hope this helps :)

It's the Nokia (formerly Withings) "Health Mate" app that connects to their scale. The scale is a bit out of date hardware wise (hasn't been updated in 5 years or so?), I'd probably wait for them to release a new version.

I got this one in May and its been working great! The app works really well and the Bluetooth connection always works flawlessly with my iPhone (my parents had a fitbit scale that was always a PITA connecting, but this was a few years ago so maybe Bluetooth in general has just improved)

The body composition results were decently close to an InBody scan I did at my gym, however I don't think bioimpedance in general is particularly accurate in terms of body fat %.

At my heaviest i was 292..that nearly 300 mark really put me into a focus. I immediately found Keto and did that and got down to 250ish and stalled after 9 months. All diet, no exercise. Went through a bad breakup and shot back up to 275. I went back to Keto and then started doing 16:8 then went to 18:6 and dropped to 255ish then back up to 265, currently I am switching to OMAD. My big problem is I can do OMAD just fine, but then I gorge and blow past my 1700 calories with stupid shit full of carbs and empty calories. My best efforts are tracking on an app to know exactly what I am eating and then sticking to OMAD. I don't drink alcohol or normal soda, so those liquid calories aren't a concern.

As for my workout I do 3 days a week, look up any 3 day exercise routine (Sun\Tues\Thurs) and do a 10 min warmup on the elliptical, lift for 30-40min and if the heavy bag at the gym isn't occupied I'll do that for 10-30min depending on the day. Lifting fasted isn't an issue for me, but slugging through 30min of heavy bag work is rough after lifting on an empty stomach. I am looking to supplement my non workout days with body-weight stuff\stretching\yoga at home, and make those my 500 calorie days. And 500 calories sounds like nothing but thats a 3 egg omelette for me, so thats enough.

I used to go a 300calorie protein shake after my workout but since I am trying OMAD I just make that one meal super heavy with protein. I drink usually 32oz water during my workout, another 64 during the day. Now its getting cold I'll throw in hot tea with stevia, etc.

More then you asked but thats what I am doing. I got this amazing scale https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N1UX8RW ($20 now, wow) so i can track my weight and more importantly my BF%. I also just ordered this fitness watch, I am curious about my sleep info mainly https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RS9LSDZ

My goal BW is 220 and < 15% BF. Right now I am at 267 and 30% BF. If i can dial in my diet I know I can get to where I need to. I workout mainly due to being mid 40s and shit isn't getting any easier otherwise I'd do all diet. But I WFH so i enjoy getting out of the house and to be honest..the hotties at the gym make it worth going.

I got a scale on amazon from a company called Renpho. It is bluetooth and it gives you: weight, BMI, Body Fat %, Fat-free Body Weight, Body Water %, Skeletal Muscle %, Muscle Mass %, Bone Mass %, and your BMR.

It was like $30. Even if it's not 100% accurate, at least you get see the fluctuation over time. I've had it about 5 months now and I really like it. There's an app on my phone and it pings once it had all the info it needs. Super easy to use.

I have a Withings digital WiFi scale, and I like it. I'll tell you, though, that the body fat measurements on this thing are right out. I mean, even by normal standards for bioelectrical impedance measurements. However, they do provide a good indication of the trend of fat loss, fat gain, so they're not completely useless.

I particularly like that it comes with little "feet" for the carpet. It's very consistent, and it syncs to the online dashboard and phone app via WiFi so my measurements are automatically imported into MFP. And a really nice feature is that if it detects you're not centered over the scale, it will flash arrows at you to tell you to lean more toward the center. I think this contributes to its accuracy.

Only downside: it's a bit pricey.

Edit: It appears the max weight is 396 pounds (well within your range) and it has been supplanted by the much less dear Nokia scales: https://www.amazon.com/Withings-WiFi-Body-Scale-Black/dp/B002JE2PSA

u/mtaylo · 1 pointr/loseit

Throw out all the numbers now, and start again. Use ONE scale to log your progress.

I believe bathroom scales vary in general. One of the first things I did when I started prioritizing my health, was invest in a decent scale with enough capacity to accommodate me (I was well over 360lbs at the time) - and by "invest" I mean "spent $35 on scale with good reviews on Amazon"

Since then, I've used that scale and only that scale to log my body weight. I generally only weight in once every 7-14 days. Weight loss is a slow process (and it gets slower as your progress).

I found, for me, it was a lot more productive make an effort not to think about my diet, but rather, make it a part of my new lifestyle. I tried disconnected myself from the process, and weighing in less frequently was one of the tools that personally helped me do that.

Keep in mind: body weight is not the best barometer for health. People often ask me about my "weight loss" and I'll sometimes politely correct them by saying my goal isn't to "lose weight", but rather, "lower my body fat".

Obviously getting a body fat analysis every month isn't practical - so sometimes the scale is the only convenient way to track progress - but don't let that number torture you. Lowering your body fat is math and science. If you're doing things right the scale still might not move every day, or every week... but have faith, it will.

I've been using this one ever since I started my weight loss regimen. It's delightfully accurate - I weighed myself in the morning, went to the doctor's office, and had the same weight on his balance scale. It rounds off to the nearest .2, but I'm really happy with how it works. Be sure to read the instructions if you get it; you can calibrate each time you use it.

It might be a bit pricey, but with something as important in your life as weight (i.e. the little changes that keep you going), it's totally worth the money.

Additionally, it lets you clearly see the huge fluctuations caused by water weight if you weigh yourself on a daily basis. Again, though, read the directions to get the best use of it.

This scale is really good. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002MK6QKO You have to step on it and then step off and let it power down and then weigh yourself (need to calibrate first). After that it's really accurate. The reason that the daily weigh in works for me is that it gives me a chance to think about what I did right or wrong the previous day (or two). I don't worry if I tick up a tiny bit on a given day or stay flat for several days. I like the tight feedback loop.

I just bought this scale from Amazon.

If I weight myself (wearing the same thing) 3 times in 5 minutes, I'll get 3 different weights, with as much as 8 pounds difference.

The thing is rated for 440lbs, which I'm more than 100lbs under, and I'm not moving it or standing in a different way each time. It's on a stable, hard, linoleum floor. It went completely batshit when I tried to use it on carpet.

u/needketohelp · 1 pointr/keto

Thanks for the reply!

I currently use this digital bathroom scale and also a digital kitchen scale from the same company. Both have very good reviews on amazon, so I always assume my data is pretty accurate when entering it on MFP.

As for pre-prepared foods, I think this low carb pita bread is the only one I eat 1-3 times a week, and I even sometimes cut it in half making it 2 net carbs instead of 4 (I use it to make tiny pizzas) along with 1tbsp low carb pasta sauce which I guess is also considered pre-prepared food.

I already eat lots of eggs, meat, cheese, salmon, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce. Sometimes half a medium-sized tomato in salad with creamy cucumber dressing. I can't stand avocados (or rather, have no clue how to make it taste good by my standards) so I stay away from it. I suppose I could start using oil more though.

u/Volv · 1 pointr/loseit

I use this one and no complaints. Hard flat surface definetly the way to go.

I put it away after use which seems to throw it off slightly and I find the first time I stand on it it shows around a kilo or so heavy. But subsequent measures are fine and consistent.

u/WorkLiftSleepRepeat · 1 pointr/Fitness

I've got one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Salter-Analyser-Bathroom-Measure-Percentage/dp/B003X3A3EY

I only use it for the body weight, as the body fat measurements are never accurate with electronic readings, and I don't care about the other information. Your body weight will change daily, and some days your body will have increased in weight, even at a caloric deficit. That's just how it works, but the scales should give the same readings if you step on and off.

u/Zahanna6 · 1 pointr/xxfitness

I have this scale and it's frustrating. Says I am 9.6%, when Bod Pod had me at 20% (and that seems accurate based on my stomach). It's consistent, but so dumb because I know how glaringly inaccurate it is...50%!

Do you think it's probably just because my lower body is more lean (hold lots of weight in stomach) or the scale just sucks for me and another BIA scale would be more accurate?

If you’re standing on it the same way, in the exact same spot, it shouldn’t do that. The digital scale I have gives me the exact same weight no matter how many times I step on and off. And I like that once it locks in, the number locks until a few seconds after I step off. So I don’t have to even look down until I’ve been on there a few seconds looking straight ahead.

For what it’s worth this is the one I’ve used the past 15 months with 100% consistency, no calibration needed.

Etekcity Scale

u/annodomini · 1 pointr/Fitness

I was recently shopping for a scale, and had some of the same questions.

I've heard the ones that try to estimate bodyfat percentage (or anything else besides weight) are extremely inaccurate, so it's probably not worth it. If you want to track bodyfat, using calipers and a 3 site skinfold test, and being consistent about the 3 sites and how you perform it, will give you better relative measure of your own bodyfat percentage than the scales that use bioelectrical impedance (BIA) to estimate body composition. The skinfold test isn't particularly accurate for absolute bodyfat measurements (comparing your bodyfat to someone else's), but it is much better at estimating change over time than BIA (notice in the link I provided, for changes over time, BIA was the worst of all of the methods tested, including BMI). Even still, the error over time in the skinfold test is in the range of 4%, so it's not very good for tracking whether you've gone from 20% to 18%, but it would do fine for tracking a change from 25% to 15% if you test it once every couple of months.

Based on that, I decided to find the cheap scale that seemed to be the most accurate according to reviews and had a nice visible display. This one fit the bill; it does one thing, tell you your weight, and seems accurate enough.

You don't need that much precision, as your bodyweight will fluctuate throughout the day due to water weight, how recently you've eaten and how recently you've taken a dump, etc. A rolling average of a couple of days measurements is always going to be better than a single measurement.

u/Avaries · 1 pointr/xxketo

I got it for Christmas and I checked it's accuracy with hand weights. I really like that it bluetooth connects to my phone to sync my weight. Not that you couldn't just manually in put it in 3 seconds or anything lol.

u/FunnyBunny1313 · 1 pointr/infertility

I’m with you!! I’m a pretty normal-sized 5’4.5” person, but I weigh 145. I keep comparing myself to the size I was when I got married at 22 (125lbs), and I tend to be on the higher BMI side. But I’m very strong for being a woman/my size so I try to remember that :)

This is the scale I have! I’ve had it for two years and I like it a lot. The app is pretty good and of course it connects to health kit if you’re and apple person.

u/HighlyEdgeMecated · 1 pointr/keto

I ordered Greater Good's Weight Guru:

I looked at the ones you suggested but chose this one bc of price and current rating/reviews. I hope it works as well as the ones you suggested.
My husband does not use MyFitnessPal. He uses Fitbit.
One of the cons I read is that is didn't sync to MFP, but they very recently made it so it can sync to Fitbit and THEN to MFP.
Once we get it I'll see if I can do that and let you know how it goes.

I just went on Amazon and wound up getting the nicest one that was under $50, which is this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N9ENKDI?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf (sorry I'm on mobile so I can't make that look nicer >.< ) Sometimes the app is buggy but the scale seems pretty accurate, not too far off from the doctor's last I went. Really though you just need something to help you track the trend: is your weight generally going up or down kind of thing. A lot of times (and I'm sure you've heard this already) you'll lose inches before you lose weight, so in that respect no scale is an accurate measure of how much fat is on your body. And you can get a little tape measure from Walmart for less than $2 lol.

u/mlpjunior · 1 pointr/keto

It's the Weight Gurus app. I bought their scale and it's terrific. I weigh in every morning before I get in the shower, and the scale connects to my phone automatically to upload the results. It also tracks BMI, Body Fat, Lean Mass, Bone Mass, and Water Weight. The best part is that it's only $60.

I just recently bought the Weight Gurus scale from amazon, i think we spent $55 on it? it has an app that you can connect via bluetooth and it sends all the metrics to your phone and creates a neat little graph. i had a body fat scan in the doctors office and my scale was about 2% off. so it's not 100% reliable but you can't expect to get that kind of technology for a bathroom scale under $100. :) but it gives you your weight, body fat %, muscle mass, bone, and hydration levels. scale

u/chasonreddit · 1 pointr/leangains

I've got one of these. Very similar.

In terms of body fat % it is pretty inaccurate. I suspect that it uses a lot of weight distribution assumptions to work from limited input with height and weight. So if you are short, dense and have lower bf% it can be way off. Mine is usually off by 10% compared to a professional InBody scan.

Que? lol, i got a cheap one.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N9ENKDI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

As I've said in my other comment, the scale is largely to keep the worst from occurring. There's no need for an overtly sophisticated machine. Either way, even the $130-150+ scales aren't anywhere close to accurate with bf% anyway from my understanding.

I'll know I'm in the shape I want to be in because I'll hopefully have abs again in the next few months. Won't need a scale to tell me that.

You can get a food scale and a real scale online fairly cheap, so hopefully you won't have to save up too long! Amazon has them for as low as $8 with good reviews as well as actual scales for around $18. If you buy a 'slightly' more expensive scale, that would push the order to $25, which would qualify it for free shipping.

I hope this helps (and might help with saving)! A food scale is definitely the most important thing, but having an accurate scale can be really good for morale as well. I definitely think this journey would be much harder if I couldn't weigh myself at least once a week.

u/IthacanPenny · 1 pointr/wls

I highly recommend this scale from amazon. Only $16.80, and free one day shipping from prime. It is super precise (though I find it tells me I'm about 1.5lbs heavier than the doctor's scale, but consistently).

If you were truly eating 1000 calories a day and working out, you would lose weight rapidly. Either you're underestimating the calories you're actually eating due to not using a food scale/knowing the exact nutritional content of food, or you didn't stay on the diet long enough to notice the effects. There's no tricks or gimmicks if weight loss is your goal, eat 1700~ calories a day and log it all for 2+ months with daily weigh ins, and the results will be there.

I would suggest purchasing a Wi-fi scale (https://www.amazon.com/GreaterGoods-Conductive-Technology-Measurements-Monitoring/dp/B01IFYLARO) and stepping on it at least once a day. The good thing about the Wi-fi scale is you don't have to look at the number on the scale if you think that may demotivate you, you could just step on it, listen for the beep to confirm its logged your weight, and walk away. It tracks all you weigh ins automatically, doesn't require you finnicking around with your phone's bluetooth like other scales, and has a web interface so you can access all your data whenever you want.

I would also caution you against comparing your scale weigh-ins on a daily/weekly basis. Water, diet and everything else will cause your weight to fluctuate 6lbs in both directions day-to-day, so you won't have any hard evidence you're actually losing weight until probably 3+ weeks in and you have enough data points to see the overall trend of your weigh-ins.

u/Kuraishi · 1 pointr/keto

You're going to likely need to get a scale that can connect to Bluetooth or something, such as https://www.amazon.com/RENPHO-Bluetooth-Body-Fat-Scale/dp/B01N1UX8RW?th=1.

Then you're going to need to research and see if there is an API you can use with their software, which I'm going to guess they don't expose publicly for people to use. In fact, I just looked up their website and didn't see anything about developer tools. Their store app is free, so I mean if you were really persistent you could reverse engineer their code.

Essentially, what you're needing to do is find your scale hardware, ensure it has a publicly exposed API, and then go from there. Or... learn how to reverse engineer Android apps and then try and hijack the hardware that way. I can't provide much help there as the only reverse engineering I've ever done was C code, and not Java bytecode. I bet there are resources online for it, but I'm no where near an authority on it.

It is like a regular scale but with bioimpedance sensors built into it and does some rough calculations to determine your body fat %, muscle mass weight, subcutaneous fat weight, etc. Along with giving you your actual weight.

I have one at home. It also logs your previous weigh-ins and things like that on its connecting app. The major downside to the scale is that bioimpedance has been shown to not be super accurate, especially not as much so as DEXA scans (also cost more per scan vs 1-$25 purchase). I just use the scale as a good baseline to compare myself against in my weekly weight checks.

I think you should start to look at your physique. Get your body fat percentage taken. For a quite fit woman you're looking to be at 20% or lower. If you can get down to ~20% then you can tell where else you can improve. Personally my goal is 10%, and I'm around 12.5-9% depending on the day. I just use

There's a bunch of different ways, some are easy and not very accurate and others are accurate but take money and time.

The easiest is a tape measure and a calculator. But I wouldn't trust that too much.

I use a scale that measures body fat by sending electric signals through your body. Also not super accurate, but it gives you an idea. I do it everyday, first thing in the morning, to make it as accurate as possible.

Once I get close to my goal I'll go get something like this done. But that cost money, and takes time. But you can really count on those measurements.

i can’t speak to its efficacy from personal experience yet, but I’ve been looking into them as a way to get more information about my body composition than weight can provide alone. You can get a relatively inexpensive body fat scale that uses “a technology called bioelectrical impedance analysis to measure body fat. A small, unnoticeable electrical current is sent from one foot, up one leg and down the other leg. Fat is a poor conductor of electricity compared to other components of the body such as muscle. The more resistance the electrical current experiences, the higher the fat.”

I’ve just purchased one for about $40 CAD on Amazon, I’ve never used one before but it has thousands of good reviews. I’m also insanely curious if there is a legitimate, reliable way to measure %BF without having to go to the doctor or have someone at my gym do it for me. I’m also keen on this option as it works with an iOS app that allows me to keep track of more than my weight over long periods of time. I’m keeping myself skeptical but hopefully nonetheless!

It costs $18 (not shilling) to put this by your bed, and weight yourself when you wake up and go to bed.

Write the data in a book, input once a week. That's 20 seconds extra out of your day. That's over complicating it? That's nothing.

EDIT: I'm glad your method works for you. But having more incremental data is substantially more beneficial, and I strongly thing that saying im overcomplicating it is kinda crap. The reason for the extra data is because this subreddit is basically a place the [majority] of the userbase come s to complain about how much they eat and they don't gain weight.

To piggyback this comment, if you can afford one (they're pretty cheap), you should invest in a smart scale. They give you more metrics to track besides just overall weight. They provide a solid estimate of your total body fat percentage, subcutaneous fat, fat-free body mass, etc. Obviously they're not as accurate as something like a DEXA scan but they're the next best thing, IMO.

They're a million times more useful than a standard scale if you're bulking and cutting.
