Picture books can be a great way to reassure and normalize what your family is going through. I’m sure you’ve seen some or all of these, but just in case, maybe try Let My Colors Out, Cancer Hates Kisses, or if you have chemo, Nowhere Hair. There’s also the Because Someone I Love Has Cancer activity book.

Maybe also see if there are any programs/support groups for kids whose parents have cancer in your area? Best of luck, so sorry you and your son are going through this.

To piggy back a little; the chemical components of which you speak are collectively refereed to as secondary metabolites. These are also where humans get many other intoxicants, from opium to marijuana; cocaine to kat.

Then some plants, notably grasses, have a mutualism with endopytic fungi that also produce secondary metabolites for the plant in exchange for sugars.

Another plant, notably the sensitive plant literally closes it's leaves.

For more very cool stuff, check out David Attenborough's the Private Life of Plants episode 5.

Also, try Plant Survival by Brian Capon (author of Botany for Gardeners).

Here are some of my favorite books that deal with children who have diabetes/work for that age group: #1, #2, and #3.

In terms of snacks, I recommend talking to the parents either via phone, email, or in person. Each child is different, and their dietary needs are very personalized.

Molly Bang is a children's book author illustrator who has some really excellent science books that would be good for fifth grade.

My Light explains how all our electricity comes from the Sun.

Living Sunlight shows how the energy for all terrestrial life comes from the Sun through photosynthesis. It boggles my mind that this isn't used more widely, because it's easily one of the best books on the subject for this age group.

Ocean Sunlight explains how phytoplankton feed the seas and supply the world with oxygen.

Common Ground Simply illustrates the tragedy of the commons.

Nobody Particular is a short graphic novel about Texan shrimper and environmental activist Dianne Wilson.

Chattanooga Sludge is another non-fiction about John Todd who used fish, plants, and algae, and snails to clean a river choked with toxic waste.

Lastly, Picture This is a denser book (but still readable by some fifth graders) about composing pictures to evoke moods and relationships.

Top/popular Amazon children's books on rocks:

National Geographic Kids Everything Rocks and Minerals: Dazzling gems of photos and info that will rock your world

National Geographic Readers: Rocks and Minerals

The first says it's for kids 3 grade and up, but the top review is from a woman who gave it to her 5 yo and it was perfect. Second is also age appropriate.

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day

I'd mail you some sunshine, but I'm not sure Amazon sells that. Yet. The closest they had was a book on the sun. That's sort of the same, right? :)

And if worse comes to worse, you can always sing along with Olaf. :) He has the right idea- sing a bit about summer and you'll warm up a little! :)
