I had an older cat who was fastidious about her litter box. Seriously, if you weren't hovering behind her waiting to scoop her precious royal poopsies, she'd get mad and go crap under the bed the next time. When she died it was hell cleaning the house.

The best thing that helped was using a Kitty's Wonderbox inside the regular litter box and changing it completely every other week. She also liked the Nature's Miracle Crystal Litter and when I added Cat Attract to the litter. Those things would get me the best result and then if I slacked off it was all over.

Oh man, the danger is real for me, no doubt.... I just sketched out a cool cage based on your design and a set of wire mesh cube shelves. I can't wait to try to put it all together! I love weekend projects that involve a trip to the hardware store. :-) I'm going to do a smaller litter box for sure though, I usually do a 10x10 litter box at the largest and then use fleece for the rest of the bedding, it's much easier to clean. You could use the same base pan that you have, add a smaller section for litter, and cover the coroplast base in fleece! That way the bottom is still easy to clean because it's plastic, and the litter box is easier to remove. I lately I've been trimming down the sides of a natures miracle disposable litter pan so it's not too tall for them and it'll fit under the wheel well enough. But be careful, I've totally sliced myself cutting those down, too... it was a very sharp knife!

I do need to find a good way to keep him from tracking litter all over his cage though... I'm thinking of trying out one of those litter mats for cats but I'm not sure if his little feet would get caught in it!

Dsiposable litter boxes with Fresh Step clumping litter are the best thing I've ever used- and I've tried everything over the years. A very wide, sturdy scoop and unscented biodegradable poop bags with handle ties to keep the used litter & bacteria contained and odor-free in trash can. No mess, no litter spilled on the floor.

Scooping only takes a minute and the large poop bags with tie handles are worth every penny. One box lasts me 2 years, I scoop every other day- 1 cat. This makes scooping so much less of a pain in the ass.

I use Nature's Miracle disposable cat boxes- I get the Jumbo and use it inside of a covered litter box. But they are totally fine on their own, they do not absorb pee, leak or fall apart. I have one cat and I toss the Nature's Miracle box every 2-3 months, litter & all then replace with a new box and fresh litter. I NEVER smell the catbox at all and will NEVER scrub out a litter box again!

Looks like you've tried a lot of the things a vet told me to try years ago, and I see you getting some good advice. I just have a couple of thoughts...

  • You didn't say, but have you had him declawed? Cats who have been declawed frequently have litter box-related behavioral issues. It usually calls for some special litter because they associate the litter box and litter with pain.

  • You say you have 3 litter boxes. That's actually the minimum recommended number. Try more of them. Place them in spots where your kitten most frequently has accidents. You could use disposable litter boxes to save money until you learn which spots are most popular with the kitten.

  • You didn't mention... how much litter do you use in each box? I was surprised when I found a friend of mine using only about a quarter of an inch in the box. I was surprised any of her cats used it. But they were mostly indoor / outdoor cats so maybe they didn't use it all that much. Anyway, you need about 2 inches of litter for the cats to scratch around in it.

  • I agree with the other redditors who suggested going to the vet. Cats can have something equivalent to Irritable Bowel Syndrome. If it hurts for the cat to eliminate, then they associate pain with the litter box, and will go somewhere else. If it turns out to be something like that, I believe the vet can recommend a special diet or meds. It doesn't even have to be that serious, if the kitten isn't getting enough water, then the poop would be very hard and it would be painful to eliminate.

  • Do you have cat trees in the house? You say your cats get along fine, but they may have some tension even without out-right fights. For example, if the kitten is intimidated by the older cat, he may feel like he's crossing territorial boundaries to use the box. Putting up cat trees in the house where the kitten can get away from the older cat temporarily will build his (the kitten's) self-confidence so he won't be intimidated and could eventually feel confident enough to use the litter box. (This is another reason for multiple boxes.)

    Good luck.

This was at Target for like $3. I had to trim off the lip on the sides (wirecutters), and it fits perfectly. Its absolutely beautiful :')

Any litterbox that is max 11.5"x17" at the base (the printed dimensions are the top of the box, which is a lot wider) will fit. Though I haven't tried, I would imagine any of these (1 2 3 4) would work as well. There is about 1.5" of extra space in the back (the litterbox is a little shorter than the carrier), but I usually just store their (empty) food dish sideways in the slot, and it keeps anything from moving around. If its a longer trip, I wire their water bottle to the front grill and it drips into the litterbox. I have to take off the top to get the box in and out - it doesn't slide in/out through the grill door, that would be too perfect! - but its really easy, hardly any inconvenience.

I think you are the one who recommended this carrier to me a couple months ago. I adore it!

Recently drove two cats for 13 hours. Wasn't the nightmare I was expecting. Two products I bought:

  • Feliway, a synthetic version of cat pheromones, to relieve anxiety. Sprayed some in the cat carriers, and also inside the new place, before they were let loose. It helped them quiet down during the ride, and also to more quickly get used to the new place. (One cat hid for only a couple of hours and the other cat just went investigating immediately!)

  • Pee pads! These were put in the bottom of the carrier just in case of accidents, of which there were none. (They also had leashes/harnesses to take them out in case they wanted to go, but that didn't work. Too scared!) They both ended up going in the new place, once they felt comfortable. With the longer trip you have... this may be a little less feasible. Maybe also buy a cheap-o litter bin and bring some litter, in case you can tell they need to go. (Disposable litter bin might be a great way to go here, nothing to keep around or clean)

Hope this helps, and good luck with your new adventure!

Two cats + 1 very large dog owner. For the cats, we use disposable litter box trays -- I find that this helps with not only deodorizing, but also with preventing pee smell from infusing into the plastic cat box. (You can find them here https://www.amazon.com/Natures-Miracle-Disposable-Litter-2-Pack/dp/B0087Y5OIE/ref=sr_1_17?crid=1YO7JVAXQJ6ET&keywords=litter+box+liners&qid=1556994822&s=gateway&sprefix=litter+box%2Caps%2C161&sr=8-17) We clean the cat boxes about every other day, and throw out the whole box about every 7-10 days. We also make sure this room has plenty of ventilation (we usually have a fan going) and I like to mop the floor about once a week to wipe up any grime.

For the dog, we make sure we wash his bed frequently and he gets regular baths. He has wet food that I cannot stand the smell of, so we feed him outside.

Some other things that I think help: vacuuming regularly, because animal fur and dander can leave behind an odor. I have a roomba that has helped tremendously. I also am a fan of essential oils/candles/all the nice smelly stuff and usually will have something lightly scented in the room.

I use a plastic liner with this on top. Makes life so much easier.

Buy the cheap kitty litter and use disposable kitty litter boxes. Slide the crap laden tray into a kitchen bag, tie it, and leave it outside. Have bf toss it into the garbage can. Done with minimal or no contact with kitty litter.

I wish I wasn't allergic to cats. I love them! Anyway, good luck!
