Not at all difficult and already available for under 100.

The working dogs on base have a nice bright 'DO NOT PET' collar they wear around. I'd recommend picking one up, save you some trouble!

Keeper collar, my friend.

I was also instilled on doing 100% positive only until my puppy gave me a good dose of reality. The R+ people tend to have soft dog breeds. They have never had to deal with a dog like the one you adopted either.

Haha buy a light up collar.

u/Sewwattsnew · 7 pointsr/dogs

My dogs wear this style of collar (with ID tags) around the house, which I picked to prevent the fluffier dog's fur from matting. They wear these all the time at home unless crated, and if we're going somewhere I switch out for a regular collar that has ID tags, plus their registration and rabies tags. It's really reassuring to know that if they ever slipped out the door or got out of the fence somehow they would still have tags with my contact info.

u/drawling · 6 pointsr/Dogtraining

Yesss light up doggies are a godsend/dogsend!

My only gripe with the clip-on lights are that you can only see it if it's facing you. You may say that the general glow of the light whether its facing you or not will be visible, but my dog is often sniffing the ground, a bush, or grassy areas, which absorb the light (it falls forward so is very close to the ground.)

I prefer the LED trim to size rubber collars for that reason. She wears it in addition to her normal collar at night only. You cannot use it as a standalone collar because it is a break-away style.

I also bought another LED nylon style for my parent's dog which has light all the way around that you can use as a regular collar clipped to a leash. Only reason I don't use this one normally is it way too big for their 10lb dog!

I'm sorry that happened to you and Brutus -- that's just terrible. I can't say I've experienced anything close to that, but I have had to deal with crate rest and recovery when my pup broke a toe. Obviously very very small potatoes, comparatively, but hopefully some of the crate rest advice may be helpful to you.

In our case, my pup was on the most restrictive possible crate rest, and also had to have a cone or similar on whenever she was unsupervised to prevent her from tearing off her cast. If you are in a similar situation, I recommend trying out a few cone alternatives -- like this or this -- so you can leave the cone off as much as possible. That way, Brutus will have his head and paws free and you can keep him occupied with Kongs, chews, and puzzle toys. Since physical exercise is out, mental exercise is absolutely critical, and the toys/Kongs are key, along with training. With a little creativity, you might be surprised at how much you can train while your dog is in stationary and even crated!

As for the driver, unfortunately the best I can offer is just to stay in touch with the officers who responded and, when applicable, the prosecuting attorney's office. Keep records and documentation for all your expenses related to recovery (including vet bills). In the event the driver is caught and charges are filed, this documentation could be very helpful to the prosecutor, and potentially even financial restitution through the same process, depending on your state's laws. Be sure to ask the prosecutor if there is a mechanism that allows for victims' restitution through the criminal process and if vet bills would qualify, and then keep following up on the restitution aspect to make sure it is part of the prosecutor's sentencing recommendation. This can obviously take a while (resolution will easily take months, and restitution, if any, would take even longer) and enforcement through this route still leaves something to be desired, especially if the offender is indigent, but it has helped a lot of people and at least saves the time, expense, and hassle of trying to pursue restitution civilly.

I hope the driver is found and convicted, and I wish you and Brutus the best as you recover.

Since you said it looks awful because of his short fur I thought I'd recommend Keeper Collars. They're basically prong collars on the inside but look like a regular collar on the outside. I use one!

We original started out with a standard collar (in the UK, we don't have things like Prong Collars or E-Collars and they are definitely not recommended use amongst the training community). With her rough start, she was already anxious and over-excitable and when walked using just a collar, she would pull so hard that she would choke herself.

We then moved onto a No-Pull Padded Harness (Similar to this design), which worked well with pulling until she realised shortly after, she could "slip-out" easily if she shuffled in a particular direction. Followed by 2-chewed-and-destroyed.

Then we got a standard Dog-vest Harness (This exact one), which has both front and back clips, and while this generally is a great harness, sturdy, long-lasting, like you've stated as a Husky Mix she thought this was a great way to sled-walk.

Finally we settled on the Halti Headcollar (This!) which was the game-changer and really started forward in her obedience and general walking.

I should point out, I am obviously aware that any Husky mix usually requires two to three times much more walking, that they are known for their stubbornness and their walking style ranges from "everything is fascinating" to "RUN!". I was prepared for this. What I wasn't prepared for the sudden change in reactiveness and the worsening of my mobility disability which took a massive impact on our daily routine. If I had known the extent of my injuries/disability would get to this point, this would probably be a completely different story.

EDIT: My point of using a Dog-vest Harness AND the Halti Headcollar is for extra-security, they are connected via cabling. I am fully aware that my escape-prone idiot could easily wriggle out of the Headcollar should she really want to. Because we live in a high-traffic area, I am concerned if I didn't have a back-up should she escape the Halti, that she would run straight into the road. Being connected to the Harness too provides me with the benefit of knowing that can't happen now.

I have a Rottie as well, and got my DNP warnings for the same reason!

First I purchased this collar: https://www.amazon.com/Neoprene-PREVENTS-Accidents-Warning-Advance/dp/B01IT5BJZC

Unfortunately, it didn’t discourage people from petting my dog when in public (mostly when tied up outside for 2 mins while I went in to buy a coffee). I added a muzzle to the equation and even still, that didn’t work.

Next, I used the DNP collar as well as a black and white patch on his harness. This still didn’t work and people would still come up and either pet him or encourage rude behaviour from him.

The only thing that worked for me was this 2” wide black and white DO NOT PET collar from Stillwater Kennel Supply. This stands out like a sore thumb, you can’t miss it on his black fur:

https://66.media.tumblr.com/9225e48a498f5c7a8bb0c3e4881b75a5/tumblr_phejtajVgE1vvunkno1_1280.jpg

You can see the message from a far ways away (even if only “NOT PET” or “DO NOT” are facing the viewer, the message is clear).

I haven’t had a single person harass him or pet him while we’re out. I’ve also since added his Do Not Pet patch to the Velcro on his weight vest

Thank you! We tried a few collars, I am the family researcher. We started with a denim collar (URPOWER Dog Leash Harness Adjustable & Durable Leash Set & Heavy Duty Denim Dog Leash Collar for Small, Medium and Large Dog, Perfect for Daily Training Walking Running https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GYJD24G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_DD8ZAbPZ1SZCC) that was excellent. Specifically, it was soft and fit very well. The Xolo escaped once and I found the pink one as a improvement. So far no escapes. I do wish the fit was tighter on the front.

Here is the pink one:

Finally, I HIGHLY recommend the below for pulling xolos. She learned very quick that she could not get away with her “rooting and pulling” style. Also, I found it helped to get her to “look up” instead on sniffing her way around.

No chafing at all! I pinched her skin once in the buckle, but that was user error and my fault! 🤪

There are leashes you can get for running that are made specifically to go around your waist and have stretch. I use one with my dog when I have to. Also my dog is a huge puller (rescue husky... can't get that sled dog mentality out of him) and the Halti works wonders. Goes around his muzzle and he pulls much, much less with it on.

I'm having top surgery in a week and have just decided to board him for the two weeks after surgery with a reputable boarder. I am lucky in that my wife will be able to walk him until I start feeling better as well. If you can afford it probably paying for a dog walker for the first week/two weeks would be best, and then getting the waist leash/Halti combo after that would make things easiest.

I own a vibration collar which I got for my deaf dog but I never really ended up having to need to use it, I just found it an unnecessary hassle. There's no point in using it around the house since he's typically following me around, and when he isn't it's easier to just go get him when I need him for something. Outside he's always on a leash, so I can just touch him or stop when I need his attention. And I would never use it at the dog park (which is where it would be the most useful) because it'll get destroyed pretty much instantly. It's just this big bulky thing that to be useful he'd have to be wearing it all the time, and this thing just looks crazy uncomfortable and heavy. And I'd have to spend time training him to understand it when it's easier to just get his attention in other ways.

But if you'd find it more useful for your situation this is the one I got http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006FLU206?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

It's a bit pricey and you can probably find a cheaper one with the same function but I got this one because its one of the few that only does vibration rather than vibration+shock. I didn't want one that also has a shock function because I didn't want my roommate to be tempted to use it when I wasn't there.

Hello fellow puppy preper! I am getting ready for my first puppy also. I just have a some stuff from my list to add to yours.

  • An exercise pen is great intermediate between a kennel and a puppy proof room. For larger puppies it can be more portable/lighter than moving around their large kennel.

  • Breakaway collar for when they are not being directly supervised. It helps prevent injuries from collars/tags getting caught on stuff. Especially important if they wear a collar in the crate or play rough with other dogs.

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, nail clippers, comb, slicker brush, pin brush, and shampoo. Along with keeping some scentless wet wipes to clean dirty paws before coming inside. I also plan on having a set of dedicated doggy towels (old/cheap).

  • Cheap fleece doggy jacket or cheap cotton doggy shirt. As my breed is one that benefits from wearing them in bad/cold weather. It is much easier to teach a puppy to enjoy wearing them now than teaching an older dog to tolerate them.

  • Couple visits to a groomer to get them comfortable with the process of a professionally grooming. Again my breed is one that needs their coat clipped regularly, but it is great to get any breed comfortable with professional grooming as a just in case for later in life. Think how nice it would be during shedding season if you can take then to the groomer for a bath and brush out.

  • Car restraint. Center for Pet Safety has a selection of certified crash tested harnesses, carriers and crates.

  • Dog license, vaccination fees, vet visits, spay/neuter cost, flea & tick prevention, and heartworm medication.

  • Puppy kindergarden classes and any other training classes you want to do with you pup.

Hope this helps you in planning for your new puppy!

Is this agressive snarly biting? Fearful biting? Or frustrated over abundance of energy biting?

There are some good alternatives to the cone...
The Bitenot collar -- http://www.amazon.com/BiteNot-BN6-Collar-27/dp/B001VP87OY

And Kong makes an inflatable collar that looks like a life preserver.

I wonder if you could also give him breaks from the collar by putting some kind of diaper/dog pants on him?

The one by Petsafe hooks around the neck and the about so your pup wouldn't be able to slip out of it. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00074L4O0)

I haven't used it personally but I've been debating trying it since the front hook harness has lost its effect on mine.

I actually have a breakaway collar for my dog and used it exclusively when I took him to dog parks or other places I thought he might wind up playing with other dogs. It did break apart without too much stress, if he were playing with another dog and the other dog got its mouth under that collar it would absolutely have broken away as intended before any harm could come to either dog. It was cheap but it didn't need to be expensive, it wasn't an every day collar.

I've heard plenty of horror stories involving collars and strangulation, both with and without other dogs. Just yesterday a very, very nice dog died in a freak collar accident. They do happen.

u/HLSiira · 1 pointr/Dogtraining

edit: man I should really read what you wrote first. You say you're already using a gentle leader and it's not working to well? What kind are you using? I've yet to use mine on a dog and have a single issue, but I guess I've gotten lucky or something. I use the ruffwear harnesses since their padded, but Kurgo has a really nice metal harness that uses like slip clips that are really easy to put on and take off, I'll try to find a link to both as well for you.

All my dogs started to pull one day, and I have 3 60 pound plus dogs, plus I work at a local animal shelter on Saturdays. This thing is a god send, and I cannot recommend it enough.

It's a little unnerving since it seems so thin to actually hold them still, but they just can't pull on it. I went from having them pull on the leash and their harness almost the entire walk to having them walk directly next to me in less than 5 minutes on their first walk.

Warning, they really don't like it at first, and will try to get it off, but just give them a few minutes and they'll get over it.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet but they make behavior correction collars for dogs that vibrate with a remote.

https://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-VT-1-Vibration-Trainer-Collar/dp/B006FLU206

If you use positive reinforcement (like a small training treat/ happy petting ) each time you vibrate his collar he will learn to associate the vibration with good things and it will help you to get his attention when needed and reward/ show love for good behavior.

u/maddman86d · 1 pointr/dogs

Something like this might help you with getting his attention and a few basic commands...

https://www.amazon.ca/PetSafe-Remote-Trainer-Vibration-Collar/dp/B006FLU206

Personally, when I trained my dog I started with verbal commands then started using a hand signal with the verbal command, then just used the hand signals. I did it with the intention of not needing to yell when he's off leash and far away from me but it will come in handy if my boy ever loses his hearing. It's probably too late for you now though since his hearing is already gone.

I use a Halti connected to a front clip harness, no collar. Below are the ones I have but I'm sure there are cheaper options. I tried a choke collar once because my husband pressured me and it was horrible.

If he's pulling, stop where you are and only continue once he lets the leash go loose. It takes a lot of patience but he'll learn that pulling means he doesn't get to go anywhere. With the halti/ gentle leader, he won't be able to pull very hard anyway.

u/BearCadet · 1 pointr/pitbulls

Chest harness is a good idea as others have said, but a head halter has worked better for us!

The logic behind these ideas is that dogs are wired such that when they feel a resistive force, they want to pull against it. The chest hardness works to help in two ways.

  1. It gives you an area of control to spread the force about instead of just on a single point/collar.
  2. If connected to the chest, it gives you a stronger point of control given that it is further from the center of gravity of the dog as well as being in front of its position.

The head halter helps take this a little further.
Instead of spreading the force across the dogs chest, it isolates the force to the head. If a dog wants to lead you while in these, it's head literally gets turned (gently, the owner is NOT supposed to pull/yank and gentle training before walks is a must). Because it's head gets turned, the dog will generally stop trying to take you in that direction, and MUCH less force is needed to accomplish this task.

Admittedly, it looks like a muzzle to someone unfamiliar with it, which is a shame with all of the negative publicity of pits. That being said, it isn't a muzzle, and it's a wonderful tool when teaching your best friend how to walk alongside you instead of leading. I would 100% recommend a head halter to any of my friends with any kind of dog that is just a little too enthusiastic about being the first one on the trail for their morning walk.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Company-of-Animals-HH022P-Headcollar/dp/B004OB1F6O

It's not painful for them and they are a lot easier to control.

But yeah...just be mindful of the dog as mentioned elsewhere. Not all dogs like to run.

I found out today mine will stop if I go under a 9 minute mile. Which is fair enough!

This. I've recently had a horrific scenario where my parent's dog's jaw got caught in my dogs collar. My dog could not breath at all while my parents dogs jaw nearly got ripped of. It was traumatic to say the least. I bought a break away collar from Amazon right after this and HIGHLY recommend it. Both dogs could have easily died.

i have this LED collar and love it. i wasn't looking for a permanent collar with D rings and such, just something extra shorty could wear during walks for more visibility. this one is easy to cut to size, it's not bulky on his tiny neck, and it's very bright.
