Get a decent pulling harness like this

As far as training, my dog was a natural. It must be in her blood, but she pulls straight ahead (usually running fullspeed ~20mph) and turns when I lean one direction or the other.

I've had a few crashes (stay away from poles) but where I live now the streets are wide enough for 3 cars so we never have any issues.

I don’t mind at all! I should really keep this information handy lol. Give me a sec to check my amazon history and I can get you some links ☺️

6-8 hours is reasonable for a healthy adult dog, but seniors (9-10 is solidly in the "senior" range for most breeds) can't hold it as long. My 9ish year old dog lasts 7-8 hours while I'm at work, but I'm already thinking about plans/arrangements to get him outside more often, because I know 7-8 hours won't work for him forever.

Accidents happen. Whose responsibility is it to take him out normally? It's kind of you to assist them. Can you ask that person about the dog's normal bathroom routines? He might be used to pooping on walks, in a certain area, or after he eats/drinks. The better you can follow his normal routines, the less he'll have accidents.

Remember that if he's house trained, he doesn't want to have accidents. They're just that: accidents.

>Due to the dog's leg, it cannot balance properly when squatting, which means that it needs someone else to help it by holding it up.

A harness for balance might help, so you can assist him without needing to bend over and put extra strain on your back. Here's one for rear support and one for general body support but there are lots of options. I've also used a towel under the dog's abdomen in a pinch.

A front clipping harness like this is usually better to try first than a head halter. The gentle leader head halter requires more work to get them used to, and can be a wonderful tool (I use one on my now 2.5yr old pit), but it’s more of a process and can be especially difficult for puppies to get used to. The front clip harnesses turn them to the side when they pull forward, so in order to keep moving forward they have to slow down.

I’ve also heard great things about this leash. It’s a thick kind of bungee leash with a handle down near the clip. So the dog has to strain harder against the resistance of the leash to pull. And the lower handle allows you to keep them closer to you.

Either of these, or even both, would probably help a lot! If I had to pick one I’d say the front clip harness would probably yield better results on its own. But the harness and the leash would likely make a huge difference if you want to splurge!

Amazon has them

Julius-K9 Powerharness, size 1, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0036IBQJ2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_o8PKDb91WJ86W

Non-stop Dogwear Freemotion Harness! Ours wears a size 6. We also have the belt and tow line, best investment for running ever.

u/MoreThulianGas · 3 pointsr/husky

The harness is the best kind I can find for pulling. It distributes the pulling load properly on the dog's spine instead of wholely on the front shoulders.

The harness is actually made in Norway, but Amazon sells them so you should be able to get then anywhere. Pay special attention to the sizing instructions, they are not "one size fits all".

Looks like a super cheap Julius K9 ripoff to me.

While I think it's better in the long run to correct unwanted behavior, my dog was such a leash-puller that I bought an "Easy Walk" harness. The lead attaches to the front of the harness, so if he pulls he turns to the side. It's impossible for him to pull on the lead because he'll completely change direction. We run with it daily and it's great!

My puppy chewed her harness (although she's never destroyed one thankfully) and the best solution seemed to be to only leave it on when she was going to be distracted by something else, like walks or class. Leaving it on to help your puppy adjust was a good idea, but you might have to change your strategy.

This is the one I use. My dog can still get her jaw under the chest portion, but at least it's a lot of material to get through. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B073TRHMS6/ I would go with whatever style suits your dog's body type best.

u/Torisen · 2 pointsr/AlaskanMalamute

Our mal got to 100lbs and we always used one of THESE NO-PULL HARNESSES and they were amazing. You just have to get them adjusted correctly. When they are set up right, if the pup pulls, it pulls their front legs together and takes away all their traction.

Works 100% and the closest it ever came to causing a lick of pain is when she bolted after a squirrel and when it pulled tight suddenly her front disappeared from under her and she kind of shoulder rolled and ended up on her back. The look of surprise was kind of hilarious. Cannot recommend these enough, after years with them she was the easiest walker.

u/hockeybroad215 · 2 pointsr/siberianhusky

We use the easywalker but don’t leave it on him while he’s alone/crated! We learned that the hard way PetSafe Easy Walk Harness Raspberry/Gray (Large) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007S9JOMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_QZ0vDbFDSTRBR

u/adopted_dog_oscar · 2 pointsr/pitbulls

Right here

If he's not full grown I'd get a medium then see if he grows out of it. My smaller dog wears a medium and it fits her like a glove.

The other option is this kind but I find that the necks are all too small and the chests are too big because they're built for deep-chested husky type dogs.

u/colelt1 · 2 pointsr/television

Don't use a collar if they are pulling, they can damage their windpipe. I used no pull harnesses on my huskies and spitz.

I have these for my dogs:

Amazon! Bueller managed to moonwalk his way out of his at first before I tightened it and he gave up, haha! |D After a quick tightening to make sure he couldn't wiggle his elbows under it he was good to go. Now as a forewarning I have some CHONKY boys xD But these harnesses are on their (almost) biggest/loosest fit and they work so you should be able to get them pretty snug around smaller fluffs~

Harness.

The harness is awesome and military grade I definitely recommend it! I need to buy the strap extensions it just barely fits around Apollo at the moment. They sell them on a couple sites check out Signaturek9.com they have the extensions there, the harness was just way cheaper on Amazon. The bag on his left and the canteen he caries i found at a local military surplus store, they are MOLLE, and hook right up to his harness. Let me know if you have any more questions... I am working on a detailed review of the harness system

u/cam18_2000 · 2 pointsr/aww

I could be wrong but that doesn't appear to be a canine ballistic vest, it appears to be just a normal MWD modular harness like this.

u/BubblegumAndEvil · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

I use a Ultra Paws Harness for our huskies. None of them have gotten out of them yet, thanks to the band clipping around the belly. And I really appreciate the sliding O-ring on the back, we always clip the leash to there so the leash doesn't pull at their neck. Otherwise, Martingale collars are my go-to, plus a GPS tracker on the collar just in case they slip out a door.

u/hatchetations · 2 pointsr/Bulldogs

My bully is also 7! We use Earthbath shampoo. I'd recommend these Keto-C Antiseptic wipes if he has any skin fold irritation. You might want to try a fish oil to add to his food; that should help his hair and they just love it. My pup has some arthritis and hip dysplasia, so we give him a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement. He has a bit of a grain sensitivity so he eats Rachel Ray Just Six. I keep Benadryl on hand (vet approved) because it helps when he gets seasonal allergies. Get some dog toothpaste and a brush; it really does help. My pup loves any kind of dental bones, also. Keep an eye out for a head tilt or unusual ear wax/discharge as bullies can be prone to ear infections. Make sure he wears a harness (we've used a cheap roman harness for years but recently got this harness) and take good care of his neck- my boy has recently been dealing with a prolapsed intervertebral disk, which is caused by normal play like tug of war and fetch, jumping off the couch, going up and down stairs, and generally having a huge head. So now we play very carefully, carry him on stairs, and have him on an anti-inflammatory. He uses a raised feeding dish to prevent strain. We also put a little tennis ball in his food to make him eat slowly (he has a tendency to eat too fast and throw up). I use Argan oil and petroleum jelly on his nose when it gets dry.
I'm sure he'll let you know his taste in treats and toys soon, but my buddy likes antler chews, Busy Bones, and all stuffed animals. Rawhides make him throw up. Congratulations and good luck!

u/random_user66 · 2 pointsr/beagles

Hi!

I had the exact same problem with my beagle Ruby.
My mum got her one of these and she seems to like it.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Julius-K9-Powerharness-Size-Chest-Black/dp/B0036I88H0

Don't have to touch her paws to put it on (which she also hates), has reflective strips on it, and a handle to pull her away from all the nasty stuff she tries to eat! I'm in the UK but hopefully this brand is available where you are and meets your budget needs!

I also love that your beagle and I share the same name ha ha.

Hope that helps!

Give James a fuss from a fellow James :).

sounds like you did pretty well in a tough spot...things I might do differently (your mileage may vary):

  1. Instead of focusing on managing her behavior, manage her energy level. If she's starting to get excited at all....stop the walk. and make her sit or lay down until she's calm. If she won't calm down you may need to exercise her in a semi-secluded area first to get some energy out.

  2. Ditch the harness. If you aren't worried about your dog biting or nipping people/dogs try this one:

    https://www.amazon.com/Petsafe-Deluxe-Harness-Medium-Large/dp/B015TNVVGY/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1511894170&sr=8-6&keywords=gentle+leader+harness

If she pulls or bounds it redirects her back at you. She will eventually become calmer and more focused on you when on the leash.

  3. always be the most interesting thing to her. easiest way to accomplish this is to keep a baggie of her favorite treats in your pocket and as soon as her attention waivers at all give her a small one. (i used deli turkey cut really thin so I could just grab a pinch of it).

  4. i put my dogs in "timeout" if there's too much excitement for them. I started that when they were puppies (caesar milan stuff...make them roll over and submit...doens't work for everybody. just happened to work well for me).

They don't come out of "timeout" until i release them. Other dogs can walk over them and they won't get up. (took a lot of work to get them that way).

    Good luck!
u/ShibaNalla · 1 pointr/Dogtraining

Do you mean chafing under her armpits? I would try a different harness that sits on her differently! It's either not suited for her body type/shape or is the wrong size probably. Both of my shibas (~20 & ~25 lbs) use "Roman" style harnesses. The 20lb wears an Amazon Basics harness and I've really liked it for him. He pulls a lot so the wider chest piece allows for that pressure to disperse. My better walker, the 25lb, wears an old Kong harness (that was discontinued, FML) and she is balding a bit where it sits but I think that's just due to the same exact areas getting more wear on them than the rest of her body and it isn't irritated or anything. Hopefully this helps :)

There are basically two types of harness styles I've found: strapy ones (like this) and more vest-y ones (like this]. My dog hates the strapy ones, and will scratch/itch at it and try to pull it off, so if your dog is really not a fan of their harness, try the other type - it could help.

I use the Canine Equipment no-pull harness, and it puts pressure on her shoulder area as opposed to her neck when she pulls. Its been a really great harness for her, and is similar enough to the vest-y type that it doesn't bother her.

There are slings available that will help your dog on the stairs. It has a handle on both sides, and a padded run of material in between. You loop the padded part under their rear area, and then double the handles up in your hand, and lift to help support them. Something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/KomfyFleece-Dog-Mobility-Sling-Harness/dp/B00HH9NSAG

Massage will greatly help your pooch recover better, faster, and to be in pain for less time. Here is the video that got me started with this on our own dogs:

u/dirtykungfu · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

We purchased this sling for our dog who has wobbler's. We used a towel at first but the sling was more secure for larger flight of stairs. There is also this help me up harness suggested by our vet but they are pricey. Best of luck to your beautiful dog.

u/JeromeAtWork · 1 pointr/husky

We have one similar to this

https://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Easy-Harness-Medium-RASPBERRY/dp/B007S9JOLC/ref=zg_bs_2975341011_18?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=AMH6BY80WVQB0M6J6TZG

Clipping in at the front really improved his walking. When we clipped in at the back he would be much more likely to pull.

We also have this one

http://www.petsmart.ca/dog/collars-harnesses-and-leashes/harnesses/top-paw-comfort-reflective-dog-harness-35825.html?cgid=100221

However my dog is a weirdo and doesn't like stepping into it so we usually just use the first one I linked since it is easier for all of us.

u/ramh · 1 pointr/mexico

> además que también me lastima a mí con los jalones.

De un dueño de pitbull a otro te recomiendo este arnes le reduce en un 80% la fuerza de los tirones, tu hombro te lo agradecerá y tambien ya no dependes de las cadenas corredizas que en lo personal a mi no me late tener que ahorcarlo para que haga caso, o de las pecheras que se lo agarran de juego/reto y jalan mas.

u/groaner · 1 pointr/BeardedDragons

I use a ferret harnes and leash.
https://www.amazon.ca/Marshall-Ferret-Harness-Lead-Black/dp/B002GCHCBU

works really well.

u/amandahwrites · 1 pointr/ferrets

We use this brand with mostly success. We have a couple of babies who are nearing a year and still on the trim side, but as long as we tighten them to the fullest extent, they don't seem to wiggle out of them.

Forgive me if the link doesn't work properly. The name of the item is: Ware ManufaCounturing SWM14008 Harness-N-Leash, Small
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005MXXFH0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_5PvQCb8T4DVR6

u/ansterthemonster · 1 pointr/RATS

I bought it from Amazon a few months ago. Unfortunately Phife Dawg had a little bit of a weight problem back then and the harness didn't fit him. He has slimmed down a little now and I noticed last week that it fits now. We started in the apartment for the first few times, and then today he had lots and lots more fun outside than he did in.

u/PonchoandLefty · 1 pointr/xcountryskiing

I got this one for pretty cheap on Amazon and it works really well! https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0049PJPWG?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_pd_title

u/mysled · 1 pointr/RunningWithDogs

If you want something longer lasting and waterproof, I highly recommend glowdoggie. Their customer service is awesome, too.

The only downside is they're hard to carry in a pack if you're going somewhere where it'll be dark later, because they're always on when they're in the 'wearing' position. But they're great lights and run on AAA batteries so it's super easy to replace. And the colors are great too.

I also highly recommend hurtta's reflective vest or even just their harnesses with the reflective stitching.

u/KarmaCorgi · 1 pointr/WiggleButts

We personally use a Herta Lifeguard harness: https://www.amazon.com/Hurtta-Collection-35-Inch-Padded-Harness/dp/B003TWISUU/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1474642082&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=hertta+harness

It's our favorite harness. It doesn't have a front-clip option, but it has one on either side as well as on the handle on top. It's been a very handy harness to have when we need to easily grab him (he just loves see what's happening when two other dogs get in a scuffle...).

u/bitsybetsy · 1 pointr/Goldendoodles

This is the exact one I purchased for my dog. You should start out as early as possible with it... There are smaller sizes, they aren't too expensive so you can size up as needed and they are very adjustable. Good luck!! This is a link to the petsafe brand med/lg size with reflective stitching, and it comes with a leash.

If anyone finds their way to this post with the same question, I'd highly recommend it, fits my two small woozles perfectly!
