It's time to double check your screws in your doors and make sure your bolts are sturdy. Create a safe room where you can go to, preferably with no windows, a heavy lock, sturdy hinges, and an door jammer. Make sure that this door swings into the room, not outward.

Stay safe.

Every one I've lived in. They're "privacy locks"; they're not for security, they're just to prevent someone from wandering in. They can be unlocked with either a straight pin
or a small tool that resembles a flat screwdriver
(and, in fact, you can use a small screwdriver to unlock those).

You need to harden up your home and business first. Alarms and cameras are only good for after they stole everything. Alarms to let you know that you've been robbed so you can get pissed off that you've been robbed and cameras to maybe see what they look like, but will not be caught.

Put longer screws into the door strikers. Get something like this for the door.

First things first - fix your doors. Most doors in average homes are very susceptible to being kicked in. Consider replacing your current deadbolt strike plate with a strike box to help with that. Make sure you use 3 inch or longer screws to install it. They need to go in to the studs surrounding the door. While you are at it, replace all your hinge screws with the same type. If you really want to get serious, consider a door bar or something similar but make sure you can get it out of the way when you need to.

Some jurisdictions (mostly in hurricane country) mandate outside-facing hinges. If you are in that area and have outside-facing hinges, make sure you replace them with non-removable pin hinges so people can't pop the hinge pins out to take the door off.

Window film is a good idea, but it's a bear to install from what I've read, and it works both ways. You may inhibit your ability to break out a window if a fire or some other event requires you to leave via a window. Hurricane shutters may be a better option if you have the cash to pay for them, and they look a lot better than plywood covers.

Lighting is another important piece of the puzzle. Consider getting some motion-activated lights to cover all the dark areas around your property if you don't already have them. I usually keep a porch light on as well as another light by my garage; both of which illuminate all of the front yard.

Consider growing thorny plants underneath your windows on the ground floor, such as roses or the like. This will prevent people who aren't really determined from coming up to the windows and smashing them out.

If you have a driveway, you can consider a solar-powered driveway alert system which will send you a tone when someone passes by the sensor so you have some warning of people coming up the driveway.

Your local police department can probably help you better than I can. Most police departments will do a home security assessment for free if you call them up and ask for one. The officer will take a look at what's currently at your property and offer some recommendations.

If you have any questions please let me know.

EDIT: Added driveway information.

I think your only current option is yale 5400 series knobsets, using a #482 extension to extend the existing 2-3/4 backset to 7". This may in fact be what you have, in which case you could re-use the extension and replace the knobset with one that can match a deadbolt in finish.

For online sellers of the 5407 entry sets, I'm seeing lots of levers available but only old stock of knobsets: Ebay link. I suspect you will need to special-order the 482 extension from a friendly locksmith.

If you hacked the door a bit maybe you could use large escutcheons and two of the Schlage a-series extensions to place the knob at 7.625 inches? There is someone on ebay selling a bunch of new AL53pd mislabelled as a53pd for $25 each, so if you don't mind a lever latchset in that color you could get a bargain.

Ads for this device have been circulating on FB this week. It's supposed to be a really good door-stopper. It may be worth looking into. They are made for doors without thresholds, though, but maybe you could get one for an interior room as an extra precaution.

>Release an interior door to close to help stop spread of smoke

So I've been thinking about this as well!

My thought was spring hinges (self closing) and one of these

Then if have to have some kind of battery relay to trigger it and a button or something to release it for normal use...

What's your setup for this?

Just so you know nearly every interior doorknob can be unlocked from the outside. There is usually a little hole in the center that takes a small metal screwdriver that acts just like a key.

Buy a bunch of them off amazon (get the one that matches your lock brand, obviously) and stick them on the top of the door frames so they are quickly accessible in an emergency. Problem solved, privacy kept.

This is the kit I got. As long as all of your locks/knobs are all schlage, you'll be good to go. There may be cheaper options with less pins, just make sure you get all the tools.

Just a word of advice, be careful opening it up, I opened it upside down and the pins went everywhere. Took a LONG time to sort them out since the size difference is extremely hard to tell.

u/Nemo_Griff · 2 pointsr/lockpicking

Option #1:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008RIDQD0/

That is good for 1 or two locks.

Option #2:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CN6V1ZK/

This is good for a fair number of locks but they don't have any springs.

Option #3:

https://www.clksupplies.com/collections/schlage-lock-pins

Build your own kit.

Just to give you some info: the .003" and .005" on the LAB kits are the measurement of the difference in the increments between the heights of the pins. As you can imagine, the .003" kit can cover a wider variation of locks than the .005" kit can because the increments are lesser.

Idk if anyone has said this already, but try add-a-lock . It’s like $10 on Amazon.

+1. I have a kit for Schlage and a similar kit for Kwikset. Probably found something cheaper on eBay. You'll need a good pair of tweezers and a steady hand.

Once you pick this skill up, it's one less thing to pay a locksmith for. You can even do master systems so that one key opens multiple locks, but each lock has its own separate key.

u/lousyg · 2 pointsr/homedefense

This is a great solution. I did the same thing when I bought my new home. Paranoid at the core (aren't we all?), I didn't want anyone else being involved in the process. I bought a Schlage kit at Amazon (http://amzn.com/B00002N768) for $70 and then spent an hour changing 3 locks.

The tricky part was getting a new key to set the locks to. You can buy keys from Amazon, eBay, etc., but the last thing I wanted was a record of a new key being sent to a specific address. I had heard that Home Depot and Lowes had boxes of keys that they would pull from when they did rekeys, and it was suggested that if you asked nicely they would give you one. I asked, and sweetened it by buying a few copies, and they happily obliged. I just took the new key and re-pinned my locks to match it.

I live in an apartment as well and was unsure about how to add things to make the place more secure while not breaching anything in the lease.

  • First thing I decided on was the Skylink SC1000. It's completely wireless except for the main panel, and everything goes up with Double Sided foam tape. You can add sensors on, add an additional siren (I have a second one in my bedroom window cutout so I hear it in the middle of the night, and its also audible outside for passerby's to hear). I also have a second panel in the bedroom for arming/unarming. It also has "home" and "away" modes so you can set a 0 second delay on the siren and not include motion detectors when home or locking up for the night. Super affordable and very easy to install and use. They also offer a remote dialer but check with your local 911 PSAP to see if they are ok for use. (in my area they are not, but the dialer calls a relative). I've given the code to my landlord although with 24 hours notice required for non-emergency 'drop-ins', it hasn't been needed.

  • Number 2: I spoke to the landlord and changed the locks and upgraded to a Schlage deadbolt and knob. You know they aren't changing the locks when people move out so there is no telling who has a key still. I just had to give one to my landlord. Schlage also gives you the tool to 're-key' a lock if you key should become lost.

  • Number 3: I put a Brinks outdoor locking lever on my bedroom door. I wanted to ensure a safe place to retreat in the event of a home invasion and I sleep sounder knowing the door is locked and there's a barrier creating a delay between the alarm sounding and someone being in my face.

  • Number 4: A relatively inexpensive IP Camera with Pan/Tilt/Zoom in the living room that covers the bedroom door and main door depending on angle, and another inside my living room window pointed at the walk up for the building.

The last thing that is still on my wish list is a Peephole camera. For now I just throw a hat over the peephole to keep the light from showing whether i'm home or not or if my face just got right against the door.

My last piece of advice is that if there is a landline phone, call your 911 center's non-emergency line and ask to test the information received by their system when 911 is dialed. With VOIP, the information could be totally wrong and even misdirected to the incorrect agency. If cell phones are the only thing in use at the house, make sure the cell phone company has the correct address on file. If a cell phone calls 911 and it sounds like there is an obvious emergency (eg: someone screaming) but the person on the line is unable to give clear information or an address, they can contact the cell provider and get a billing address. If the bill is sent elsewhere, an alternative address can usually be added to the account.

People who lie out of convenience.

Had a contractor installing some new door jambs and doors to replace some that were in the process of rotting. I asked whether they could install some box strikes which according to Consumer Reports can significantly enhance the durability of even low-end deadbolt hardware.

The guys had finished putting the new doors in but the strikes were still in the package, untouched. I asked whether they encountered a problem installing them, and they basically blew me off, saying that the deadbolts would be "just fine", these ANSI grade 3 deadbolts, 3 which is ANSI's lowest acceptable grade for residential locks in terms of hardiness.

In hindsight, I should've incorporated this into the original estimate before I signed off on it, and specified that installing the strikes would be part of the requirements of the job, but didn't. Still, it would've been nice if they just flat-out told me this, rather than blowing me off by telling me the adequate lock hardware would be fine and essentially not benefit from their having to take an extra hour to install the more secure strikes.

The thing about lies of convenience is that many people can tell you're doing it and will file it away in their file of what to watch for with certain people, but won't necessarily call you on the carpet about it.

Basically its a key once inserted will disable a lock permanently and special tools need to be used to remove it. What got me thinking of it was a friend of mine didn't want to leave her house because her ex had a key and she thought he was going to show up. She ended up just waiting and watching the door until a locksmith came to change the locks out but definitely would have had some more peace of mind if the lock was disabled.

Maglock+spring or gravity is the usual answer. Linear actuators like in your link have their place, too. Car door power lock kits can do a few things.

Unless you find a really cheap maglock, cheapest might be these electric cabinet door locks. They make a nice popping noise and push the door open on activation. Drawers may have too much friction, though. They can, however, be re-latched, unlike maglocks.

I am. The goal is to get the screws through the door frame itself and into the studs beyond the frame. Another user mentioned that if someone wants to get in they will but most intruders will try a few hits and then move along as they do not want to draw any attention to the break in. There are other products you can buy to further reinforce the door. A few examples below.

Reinforced strike plate

Something similar to the original post but less convenient

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/WTF

The deadbolt was installed behind the door trim, not into the 2x4 stud. This is a poorly installed door. This is an effective strike corrector that comes in various finishes and won't make your frame look bad. That's important in apartment setting. This is also very effective and old school and does no permanent alterations to anything.

As a locksmith I can tell you the MOST important part of securing the door is making the strike better. Builders install these things for looks and ignore security. The old and really dangerous line of thinking is that "locks only keep honest people out". I have secured doors that fire departments couldn't break through. It only takes money, and most people invest more in their phones than they ever consider investing in their personal security.

A quality deadbolt installed in a reinforced strike can stop a battering ram, but most people are to cheap to pay for it.

It looks like it is just a standard lockset with a few extensions. You may be able to pickup a new Schlage lockset and connect it to the existing extensions, naps long as it's in good shape and the haven't changed the internals. Otherwise you'll need a few of these - http://www.amazon.com/Schlage-41-005-Backset-Extension-Latches/dp/B003L40ZQG .

Drill a hole for a new lock above the handle and install per usual. Either don't use the old lock or replace with a cover. Depending on the smart lock you could likely install it "upside down" but may need to reverse the deadbolt.

I totally feel ya bro. I had a similar situation a number of years ago, though the ex bf wasn't a muslim, he was still a crazy. Buy a large Sabre pepper spray: https://www.amazon.com/SABRE-Red-Pepper-Gel-Strength/dp/B002368VJ6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1493906371&sr=8-1&keywords=large+pepper+spray

and keep a firearm nearby. Buy some rubber bullets and keep the first 2 rounds loaded as less-lethal and the rest HP or self-defense oriented, it will help in a trial determination.

Also, regardless of this situation, but especially important in lieu of; buy a door reinforcement kit. Something that wraps around the door frame at the lock/jamb interface, such as: https://www.amazon.com/Prime-Line-Products-9590-Reinforcer-Stainless/dp/B005H3AN7A/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1493906690&sr=8-13&keywords=door+reinforcement

and install 3in screws at the latch, as well as at the hinges.

Your a good man for helping a woman in distress, but considering the risk you are taking, and in-order to protect her effectively you need to be 100% in charge of things. It's your way, or the high-way. She needs to comply with whatever provisions you deem necessary.

Best of luck

I have a a backpack for LD (various MIDI interfaces, USB-DMX dongle, laptops, AA Maglite) or a Bum bag for more hands-on electrics (where I say Knippex, Lindstrom, Fluke. And Maglite.). And a toolbox with the all important hammer (nicknamed "sweetness"), big-ass wrenches and so on.

I try not to forget this, ever.

Also a Wera of sort, but damn this one is elegant, I wasn't aware of it.

That thingy when used responsibly is a huge help, but do NOT use it as a safety controller.

Speaking of which, I tend to get people mad by insisting on using this before starting actual work. 400mA diff NOT working anyone? It happens.

Looking at how things are organised here, I couldn't get it in one bag; long jobs end up filling my car actually: Gels, and spares, and backups, and adapters, and an actual toolbox... And the cordless drill... when I do festivals or street theatre or such, my car end up the Tool-chest, you can't possibly carry it all while on the move, but you can organise your trunk so that everything comes easily at hand.

Why do I have an image of him with his Little Orphan Annie Decoder and his number 2 pencil breaking the code that was read out over the radio broadcast? And you frantically knocking on the door needing to pee.

And the secret message is: Drink More Ovaltine.

My advice - go on amazon, buy a tool that unlocks the door and go into the bathroom. The tool cannot cost more than 50 cents. Heck buy 10 of them.

I just moved into a new house and this is what I did first week:

All new Shlage deadbolts which I will eventually install medeco or abloy cylinders in.
Door armor at the door jamb and hinges.
Armor latch on the sliding glass doors.
DSC Alexor alarm with contacts on all doors.

Next week:
Recessed alarm contacts on all windows and some motion sensors.
Security window film on sliding glass doors and vulnerable windows.

All in all it will set me back about a grand but it will make the house a huge pain in the ass to get into.
