This is a generation old. It is missing (imo) the killer feature of being able to adjust the warmth of the screen for reading at night.

SPOILERS. On the amazon store page the zoom option shows a page from one of the books in the song of ice and fire books. If you haven't read or are watching the TV show, I suggest you do not click the ZOOM option where you can see the difference.

Edit: Ha, they changed it. There is no longer a problem with clicking zoom

u/JohnEdwa · 10 pointsr/assholedesign

Amazon sells two versions of each Kindle, one "With Special Offers" (ads) that is cheaper, and one without. For the current Paperwhite, the difference is $20 (130 vs 150).

And they are about as non-invasive to the reading experience as possible - they just replace the lockscreen image with an ad so you actually never see them when you are using the device, and at any point, you can pay the difference to remove them if you so desire.

You have the WiFi on. WiFi will take a decent amount of battery life. Amazon rates battery life on reading for 30 minutes per day with all wireless off.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F7TLZF4

> Battery Life

> A single charge lasts up to six (6) weeks, based on a half hour of reading per day with wireless and Bluetooth off and the light setting at 13. Battery life will vary based on light settings, wireless usage. Audible audiobook streaming over Bluetooth will reduce battery life.

If your looking to get best bang for your buck then the All-New Kindle fits the bill. If you want waterproofing and 300ppi screen resolution then the Paperwhite is your other option since you don’t want to spend more than $200. Both are great devices. I personally wouldn’t buy now. I’d wait for Black Friday sales.

I'm guessing it is just an Amazon mistake as it only affects Oasis, and you can order it from Amazon.com to many random countries just fine.

One option I guess you might not have tried yet:

  1. Open the international version of Kindle Oasis at Amazon.com:
  2. Select a country such as "Venezuela" so it allows you to add it to cart. If you select "Slovenia" it just tries to redirect you to Amazon.co.uk which does not ship Oasis to Slovenia.
  3. Go to checkout as usual with your Slovenian address.

The above allows me to buy Oasis from Amazon.com to Finland (thiough Amazon.de ships it to Finland as well, so I don't need to actually use that method).

that's where you can get it, and you can pay to have it shipped overnight to your hotel

i did some search for you and determined quite quickly coupled with my knowledge that everything amazon brand is delivered from amazon knowing there is no amazon retail store location i went ahead and let you know the capital of the planet that you already know where to get it and you already know how, you just had to let someone let you know you already knew

In the US, anyway.

Kindle's web browser is based on WebKit to provide a better web browsing experience. Now it's easier than ever to find the information you're looking for right from your Kindle. Experimental web browsing is free to use over 3G or Wi-Fi. The experimental web browser is currently not available for some customers outside the U.S.

It sucks, but use that time to study and get a scholarship to an out-of-town school. If you're in the Wasatch Front, USU and SUU are good, relatively inexpensive schools that will get you far enough that your parents can't do much but visit on weekends.

If your parents will let you, I'd also recommend getting a part-time after school job and/or a Kindle 3G. Both will be great ways of passing the time and preparing for your future of freedom.

u/DiDgr8 · 2 pointsr/tablets

You have several choices. My favorite is Onyx Boox Note+.

They make the 9.7" Note S, the 10.3" Note or Note+ or the 13" Max2.

Sony also makes a similar 10" DPT-CP1 and 13" DPT-RP1 but they cost more and are "closed OS". The Booxes run Android.

There is also the 10" reMarkable

For reading music, the Android apps are the best. You'd have to scan sheets as PDFs on the others and there might be "display" issues.

u/rtechie1 · 2 pointsr/tablets

Hmmm, all I can think of is the 2011 Acer ICONIA 6120 which you might be able to track down.

Way back, Sony made a folding tablet. Too small for your needs.

What you really want is a large-format e-ink reader, like the expensive Sony DPTS1 or Onyx Boox Max. Still won't do 2 pages, but a lot more readable.

Maybe a 17" laptop as well.

u/isdnpro · 2 pointsr/london

Yeah that's with currency converted.

Here's two products I compared:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07741S7Y8/ - £129 (without ads) = $236.50 (was $238 when I checked earlier)
https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/ebook-readers/kindle/kindle-paperwhite-6-waterproof-ereader-8gb/346788/ - $199 AUD (~£108).

I'm not actually sure if the JB sold model would have ads or not... but the model with ads in the UK is £119 anyway so regardless it's cheaper in Aus.

I often find duty free is more expensive - sure there may not be VAT/GST etc but the markup seems higher.

In my experience, US is cheapest for electronics, then AU then UK. Depends what it is though, and media is different again (although my Spotify AU subscription is cheaper than a UK one)

u/Albertican · 2 pointsr/Calgary

Yeah but there's the other side to this too. I was looking for a Kindle, a brand new basic one is $80 (+ tax I guess). So I ask some woman who has listed a Kindle Touch (i.e. 5 years old) on Kijiji for $100 if she'll take lower because it's cheaper on Amazon, and she's like "yeah, I know how to Google", so I say "ok, I'll take that as a yes, would you take $40" and she says "No $80 is as low as I'll go". So she apparently knows a brand new one is $80, but feels that her old model is worth the same, if not more. I think it is a great demonstration of people getting attached to their things, and valuing it more than an impartial third party would. Sometimes coming to an agreement with people like that is impossible.

Anyway, that Kindle is still listed if anyone feels like picking up a Kindle Touch for $80.

Not even close. There have been several 12+ inch ereaders.

u/highorderdetonation · 2 pointsr/ereader

If you're willing to jump through a hoop or two to move ebooks around on your own, then it's more a question of what you're looking for in an e-reader...and a backlight doesn't reduce your possibilities as much as you'd think. That still covers the Kindle Paperwhite (and/or Oasis, albeit with ads on the lock screen AIUI), or the Nook Glowlight 3, or the Kobo Aura 2...and those are indeed the major players. There are also models like the Boyue Likebook Mars and Onyx Boox Note out there if you're wanting something more platform-agnostic (sort of, since they're openly Android-based).

That said, with my admittedly limited experience with e-readers, it probably comes down to three questions:

  1. How much do you want to spend on an e-reader? (For all intents, the low end starts at about $100 USD unless you catch a sale.)
  2. How large an e-reader do you want? (The vast majority are 6"; you then jump to 7.8", then to around 10").
  3. What bells and whistles do you want? (As in how much internal storage space it has, backlighting and/or the ability to tweak same, whether it has an SD card slot, audiobook capability--which you already said was not a factor--and so on.)

Hmm this is a Kickstarter campaign that is estimated to ship in August 2019:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/479880611/e-pad-the-e-ink-android-tablet

Seems very similar to some existing offerings like this:

https://www.amazon.com/BOOX-Note-Ereader-Android-Display-x/dp/B07BNGJXGS

...which retails at near $200 less, granted it is older version of Android and spec... But it's e-ink, you're not going to be streaming 4k videos or playing cpu intensive games on it.

u/khalornz · 2 pointsr/kindle

There's an 'international version' of the Oasis (32GB WiFi model only) that Amazon will ship to you directly. I'm in NZ, that's how I got mine - should be cheaper and faster than YouShop

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/books

If logankekz wants the one with 3g and all the latest fancy features, it's $189.

u/MizunoZui · 2 pointsr/UsbCHardware

Onyx Books 2018 flagship lineups (7.8'' Nova & Nova Pro, 10.3'' Note Plus) and the 2019 Note Pro all have USB-C. Running custom Android 6.0.

Own a Nova and it's great. A little bit overpriced tho.

Eh, if you can ever check out the chromebook at a bestbuy or something you might want to . . I loved it so much I bought the pro as well. The brightness can be turned down to near nothing so it doesn't kill me that way. Great for PDFS.. hope your search works out.. you might also want to look at the https://www.amazon.com/BOOX-Ereader-Android-Interface-Dual-Touch/dp/B077GVLMJN/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1523910847&sr=8-6&keywords=e-ink+reader&dpID=51IKMLKuS1L&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

I prefer the smaller form factor Sony PRS-350SC, but certainly wouldn't turn my nose up at the 650.

I have an old Sony PRS-300 that sounds like it fits your needs. No backlight though sadly.

Okay I think I get it. I'm going to link to the ones and can you tell me if I'm wrong?

u/BigRedDrake · 1 pointr/kindle

I'm not sure. It's this one, however

Regarding the Home screen, I may just do that. Whatever purpose it's supposed to serve is completely lost on me.

The cover art thing..I mean, that might work? But I don't understand why it doesn't just work as-is. I shouldn't have to sideload books I bought on Amazon to get cover art working (which isn't broken on my other kindles), ya know? Is this a known problem with Paperwhites?

u/luerk3r · 1 pointr/ereader

Edit on my part, forgot there was an $800 one from Amazon, however its the white model.

If you think condo developers are above room temperature IQs, read Behind the Housing Crash. They're greedy, but more myopic than Helen Keller. But they're stupid like a fox, because no matter how little they sell, there's always another dumbass to bankroll another development.

Are you sure about that? The page for the international version of the new Kindle shows Mauritius as a country they deliver to. (The international version is just the Kindle minus the US ads.)

Yes, I bought an ereader a few years ago and a Nexus 7 last year. The ereader lacks wifi, doesn't allow you to search files and has a terrible time reformatting pdfs. However, the battery life is measured in weeks and not hours and as long as there are still words and books it won't be obsolete; it replaces a few duffel bags worth of books at a time. It's a little bit of a pain to find DRM free files, but workable. It's honestly more useful than the day I bought it, and I expect that trend to continue.

Nexus 7 is for the large PDF files with graphics or that I need to search rather than read straight through.

The tablet can do everything quite well, but the reader can do pure text better, with battery life good enough to not care about battery life, and for dirt cheap.
