I like DR strings. I started out with D'Addario but have grown to hate them. They make good bass strings though. Their guitar strings are just twangy/flat sounding to me, don't feel good, and break easier than DR. I don't think I've broken a DR yet. DR strings for me, especially the coated ones, sound really warm. All 3 string sets I get sound great, have lasted me longer than D'Addario, and the non coated also don't feel terrible if they corrode. I use the Black Beauties, DDT, and Dimebag Darrel signatures.

Oh, before I forget:

You may want to tell her to get some light gauge strings. Depending on how it heals, the scar tissue could be very sensitive to touch/pressure at first, so having something a little lighter could help with that.

If she plays electrics, I recommend these: http://www.amazon.com/Ernie-Ball-Extra-Slinky-Nickel/dp/B000MFN8B6

I put a set of Rev. Willy's .008's on one of my guitars recently. It's…interesting. I'd thought about buying their .007's, but didn't have the guts.

But overall I'm liking the 8's well enough. Just took a little getting used to playing with a lighter touch. (Not so much that I'll put them on all my guitars just yet, but it was an interesting and inexpensive experiment to try.)

I don't share this experience with Ernie Ball Super Slinkies. I buy em in bulk on the Amazons an they last forever. shrug

But I always wash my hands before playing. I think that has a lot to do with my strings lasting a long time. Oils are a killer, (rust).

You'll get a lot of recommendations for the free stuff for JustinGuitar, Andyguitar or https://syngates.com.

Supplement these theory lessons with Rocksmith 2014 (PC or gaming machine) which'll help you with mechanics in a FUN(!) way as you learn from famous licensed songs. They add songs every Tuesday (Shania Twain pack was released today for example). There's currently over 1000 songs. The software also has ways to slow down songs, play impromptu with a "band" and do mini-games to improve your muscle memory/technique/chord knowledge.

You can also get a cheap but great sounding "bedroom amp" like the Blackstar Fly 3 Bluetooth for practice (you WON'T do better for the money). Btw, Bluetooth is great for passing thru backing tracks from your phone/computer.

Once you evolve to the point where you want to use different effects, you can get the much adored Zoom G1xon (again best in class) for less than $80 and mate it to the Fly 3 (it includes a Looper, Drum Machine, Metronome and Tuner to help with your practicing):

Get a Dunlop sampler pick pack off Amazon to find the pick you like most for your fingers. Also stick with around 10-46 area for string gauges or something more unique like the GHS Gilmours which have purposely THINNER gauges in the middle for easier bending (the 10.5-50 set is specifically designed by Gilmour himself for Gibby guitars).

I use 100% pure nickel strings on my electric guitar now. After years of buying all different metal combos and thicknesses I came to the conclusion that these Fender 3150R's where the best sounding. They work for me but I play mostly clean with very powerful humbuckers.

I love my Schecter corsair

(They cost just 10 € in Germany)

Just to be clear. This Guitar dosn't have a good distorted sound.

I really like it. It’s not my highest end bass, but it’s my only 5-string. It’s a heavy fucker, but Schecter did a great job beefing up the hardware by cutting corners on the aesthetics. I think it looks cooler that way anyways. The three band EQ is so nice that it’s now almost a hard requirement for any new bass I buy.

One thing about it, you have to get Ernie Ball 5-String Super-Long Scale strings or equivalent “super long scale” strings if you want the strings to go through the body since the neck is incredibly long. They’re fairly hard to find. Bought a really nice set of strings when I first got the bass and discovered that little nugget the hard way. I do really love that the bass has two full octaves for each string, though.

This is tough because Brad has used a ton of setups and guitars over the years. However, most of LP's songs are in the range from E Standard tuning to Eb Drop Db tuning. You should be able to get to those tunings and everything in between with THESE strings. I've used them for years and have had a great experience.

You're not going to get into drop B with your particular guitar. Not with anything that sounds good anyway.

Regarding the pickup, you really just need a nice bridge humbucker of some kind. THIS shows the pickups he's used over the years. You might like something like the Tone Zone. Even though Brad never used one, I can speak for the D-Activator as being a very nice pickup that you could play all sorts of LP stuff with. For someone looking to use one guitar for various songs and tunings, it would work really well as it's pretty balanced, neutral and passive. That way your amp can take care of dialing in the sound you want.

I hope this helps. I'm no expert but I'd be happy to try and answer any further questions you may have.

You might want to try half-round or flatwound strings. They sound warmer and darker than roundwound strings, they keep a consistent tone for longer and they feel silky smooth. I use Thomastik flatwounds on nearly all my guitars - they're expensive, but they sound great and last forever. Other good options include D'Addario Half Rounds, GHS Brite Flats, D'Addario Chromes and GHS Precision Flats.

I usually swear by d'addario. Doesnt break the bank and lasts quite awhile. I maybe change my strings every 6 months after normal use, but its just so the tone sounds brand new. I usually swear by these two for nylon

  • Flamenco

  • Normal

These are my personal opinions, however. Do some research! There are some guys out there that can tell you every pro and con!

Its also been popular to string nylon guitars with Carbon strings! They give a brighter tone (i believe?) And can be found here

Lots of guys over at the local shop have recently been swearing over Titanium strings which to me is almost an inbetween from carbon to nylon

d'addario makes a 10.5 set that I really dig
