Buy yourself a nice kettle.

I have this bad boy.

This one is also good and cheaper.

Need hot water for oatmeal, coffee, tea, noodles, etc? Done in a couple of minutes.

I don't know how I lived without one of these for so long.

u/expendablethoughts · 13 pointsr/tea

Love this one, adjustable temperature is key.

I just took this little fella across Europe and the UK, and have used it stateside as well. It collapses very flat and the travel case is a nice touch. Low capacity but more than enough for a brew!

Pino Digital Kettle Pro -- best digital kettle I could find that had an all stainless steel kettle. You put in a temperature and it heats the water to that temperature (no 3 settings -- any temperature you want). The kettle also is entirely stainless steal, which won't mess your tea up by having plastic flavor from the teakettle.

Apart from that I have a nice gaiwan and a ceramic teapot, and a bunch of yixing and cast iron teapots for steeping that I use depending on the tea and my mood.

For a goose-neck kettle I recommend the Bonavita 1.7L Digital Variable Temperature Gooseneck Kettle BV382518V. If you don't care about it being goose-neck I have a Hamilton Beach that has lasted awhile now. Don't think they make it anymore but I think the brand is good. Hamilton Beach 40880 Stainless Steel Electric Kettle, 1.7-Liter $23.08. Fount this one Hamilton Beach 40996 Programmable Kettle, 1.7-Liter $29.99. I cannot speak for other brands. I just know that Hamilton Beach is over 5 years old and did not cost that much.

I have this one and like it quite a bit. I chose it as it seemed to be the sturdiest in the store. It also has everything you listed, with a nice push-button slow-opening lid mechanism.

I have been using this Cuisinart PerfectTemp electric kettle for ~5 years and it works great everyday.

u/Rashkh · 4 pointsr/Coffee

It's sold under the Krups brand name in the US. After using the dial to set temperature on the Oxo kettles I don't think I can go back to buttons. The 200F maximum is kind of absurd, though. Why would you spend that much on a kettle that can't boil water?

u/brock_lee · 3 pointsr/Homebrewing

Unless everything is not shown in the image, I'll say that I got all of that stuff, minus the pot, for about $100. That makes the pot itself come in at $299, which is a bit pricey.

I mean, I believe this kit has everything there (except the pot), shipped, for less than $100

http://www.amazon.com/Brewers-Best-Beer-Brewing-Equipment/dp/B006J336US

And then you can get a 10 gallon SS pot, with fittings, for about $220.

http://www.amazon.com/Bayou-Classic-Gallon-Stainless-Kettle/dp/B009SKU4PE

Of course, if I were to get stuff together for all-grain (which I have) I would also get an insulated cooler for a mash tun, rather than rely on the kettle itself. Those run about $100-$150.

u/Applesaucery · 3 pointsr/tea

There are plenty, you can just Google it, but they tend not to be the cheapest possible options. Then again, I agree with what's been said--save up a bit and buy a stainless kettle; the plastic ones are nasty.

You need a hot plate or an electric hot pot. Sometimes grocery stores carry hot pots. Otherwise you'll have to go to Target or something.

> With an electric kettle it would take 20-30 mins guaranteed.

That's rather different to answers to this question on an example Amazon review of a US 1.7L electric kettle here.

>how long does it take to boil?
>Answer:
If I remember correctly, a full pot of cold water takes no more than 5 minutes.
By Larry Dee on November 14, 2016
I timed it twice...The first time it boiled in 4:37 , the second time, 4:45.....each time using a full pot (to the full line).
By Angie on March 12, 2017
1.7 lt of cold water - took 7 minutes
By mari on December 20, 2016
I'd say 3-5 minutes
By dancemom on November 14, 2016
just a few minutes, depending on how much water is in there, less than 5 minutes for a liter
By Laura Mendley on November 14, 2016
Approximately one minute.
By Mary on November 14, 2016
Did not actually check the minutes to reach boiling point, but it is really quick. I find it very good and fast. It's a keeper with daily uses. Love it

Clearly those kind of answers not the ultimate in scientific tests, but...

u/OhNoBees · 3 pointsr/tea

I have the Cuisinart version. I like it, but I honestly don't use the tea maker part very often as the basket is a little difficult to clean (see I'm lazy). I mostly use it as just a kettle.

u/InfernalWedgie · 3 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

Even though we aren't huge on kettles here in the US, we do have kettles.

I've had this little guy for more than 10 years, and it heats up very quickly. My cousin has this incredibly fancy thing and it is fancy af.

Much cheaper and simpler than hiring an electrician to do all of that stuff.

u/jmdbcool · 3 pointsr/tipofmytongue

Something you also might be interested in, and less of a fire hazard, would be an electric kettle. Fill with water, plug in, gets hot in a couple minutes. Great for coffee, tea, cup-o-noodles, whatever.

u/TinyTacks · 3 pointsr/amazonecho

I use this electric kettle every day and it works great.

u/awkwardsoul · 3 pointsr/tea

I don't own it, but I've seen this one in action. It folds up https://www.amazon.com/Gourmia-Travel-Foldable-Electric-Kettle/dp/B01M6BS2EI/

https://www.amazon.com/Bonavita-Voltage-Electric-heating-element/dp/B00X0CH1TI/ is another option I know people like.

I've never seen a variable temp smaller than 1liter.

When I was in a dorm I cooked a lot of stuff in my little electric pot thing like this: https://www.amazon.com/Elite-Cuisine-EHP-001-Maxi-Matic-32-Ounce/dp/B002DUCC8S/ref=pd_lpo_79_lp_t_4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=53YAQ2MH2G9Z93WZC57P

Also, if you're interested in learning to run a bit more, you should come check out r/c25k. It's a program that builds up to running for 30 minutes, but you only need to do a minute at a time at the beginning. I also could barely run for a minute when I started, and now I can do 5 miles!

u/SheldonvilleRoasters · 2 pointsr/Coffee

A caution about hotel tap water -- upon check in, give the water a taste to see if it's out of control chlorine-wise. I usually find that hotels have water systems that are overloaded with chlorine either from artifacts from cleaning the treatment system, or possibly from the city water treatment system.

I will usually give the water a test and if I can taste chlorine I will do a quick search for a convenience store nearby to buy a gallon or two of drinking water and water for coffee. The complimentary two bottles is never enough for me for the day.

I also recommend one of these folding kettles available on Amazon. Although the kettle will stop heating when the water has boiled, it will automatically turn itself on again to boil the water if the temperature lowers to a certain point. This would not be so much of a bad thing, but the "on" light remains off when it tries to re-heat the water so you will have to err on the side of caution and just unplug the unit after you boil your water.

u/lensupthere · 2 pointsr/Cooking

If you don't mind piecing a solution together...

You're in the "homebrew kettle" (or Mash Tun / MLT) range of volume - there are some with temperature gauges and spigots that will be handy too. Then you can use a keg blanket/insulation/aluminum waterheater wrap to control temp fluctuation.

To keep it warm or warm it up? Options vary. You can set the kettle on a gas/propane powered burner (e.g. turkey fryer burner) or a portable electric heating/burner element (electric is probably better and SAFER at "setting and forgetting").

I don't drink coffee (really? yes), so instead I have broth (if you're in the US--I get Tone's Chicken or Beef Base from Sam's Club--much better flavor IMHO than bullion cubes). Then I add 1 tbsp butter and I'm off and running. The first one was hard to get down because I was so ingrained into not eating fats, but the second cup? Ambrosia. Now I have it for breakfast. It grossed me out at first b/c not a traditional breakfast food, but then I thought--hey, my stomach doesn't have a clue what time it is! Now it's BPB (bullet proof broth) every day. Note, I do continue to stir through the drinking so I don't just drink butter, but if I'm at home--immersion blender and it stays emulsified. http://www.samsclub.com/sams/search/searchResults.jsp?searchCategoryId=all&searchTerm=tone%27s+base&fromHome=no&_requestid=449975 Since you don't have access to a microwave--->http://www.amazon.com/Presto-02703-Electric-Tea-Kettle/dp/B0000Z6JJ6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1451918295&sr=8-1&keywords=electric+teapot+small Good luck to you!

u/pyramid_of_greatness · 2 pointsr/Coffee

You should be able to get a system rigged up with a temperature controller and a cheapo hot water kettle/heating element for your budget. I also wouldn' t mind hearing a review of this t-fal unit.

u/arbarnes · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

Sounds like you've got a plan going. One more thought - an electric kettle may give you hot water in your dorm room far quicker than you can get from the plumbing system in the bathroom. And it has ancillary benefits (if you haven't ever had ramen noodles with a poached egg, you should).

u/sickemsideways · 2 pointsr/tea

That is the one I was looking at, well similar, here

I've noticed people reviewing that the screws rusted within months along with other issues. But since you have had the device for 7 years, it must be reliable.

u/Grodd · 2 pointsr/Coffee

If a kettle is a problem then a microwave will be fine. You can get a decent electric 1.7 liter kettle for about $30 though.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008F3Y42O?pc_redir=1396473648&robot_redir=1

There's a 1.5L French press for $30. They're out of stock but you could message the seller and ask if they will have more. The same one is $54 from another seller and in stock.

$60 isn't much considering the quality improvement over your situation, which sounds awful.

1.8L kettle for $20.

u/briedcan · 2 pointsr/Fitness

The model I have is similar to this. Basically it doesn't look like a traditional non-electric tea kettle. It is essentially a cylinder with a hinged top. You can push a button and the top flips up. You can insert and remove eggs here. I usually place them in by hand and remove them with tongs b/c they are hot as hell.

u/Neztaria · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

We all need hot water, whether for tea, coffee, instant soup, ramen noodles...I could go on but I think you get the idea. This nifty contraption is a tea kettle but you don't have to use a burner; it is self heating. I love tea personally and I always end up microwaving the water which isn't terrible but can be very awkward with some of those odd shaped mugs I love to use. This is a warm drink lover's best friend! :D

I understand it breaks the rules as far as I did honestly add this item today. I thought I had it on there already but oh well. I am not looking to win at this point, just hoping to help you find something awesome.

Congrats on your place!! That is very exciting. :)

I have This one, I got it from Target and has worked good so far, you can also get a decent one from Adagio

u/sundayseeking · 1 pointr/tea

My advice here might not be popular, but before I got an electric kettle, I heated water in the microwave. Five minutes for a little over two cups of water in a 700 watt microwave was good for black tea.

I ended up buying this electric kettle because it was cheap and had temperature control a few months ago. And I am very happy with this infuser, which looks similar to the ForLife infuser linked in another comment.

Those two items would get you started hardware-wise for about $40, and you could use an insulated mug if you already have one in lieu of a thermos/tumbler.

u/Calcipher · 1 pointr/tea

I have the Capresso and I have also never had the smell, but let me give you other reasons to not buy one. First of all, the design of the kettle makes it so that pouring from it means your hands are directly over the steam and it is very easy to burn yourself. Second, it has no thermometer built in. Third, If you ever fill it above the 3 (or 4) cup mark, despite that being well below the 'max' line, you will find that you have hot water pouring out the top of it while it violently boils. Fourth, it is a pain in the ass to clean; I've taken to boiling vinegar/water solutions to do so, but you have to do it nearly every time you use the thing to keep it looking nice and the top is narrow enough to make it hard to clean the inside. Mine, after less than a year, has developed an intermittent leak at the bottom (where the heating element, glass, and silicon gasket come together) that seems to have something to do with temperature; luckily, they designed the plugged in base in such a way that there are drainage holes so that it doesn't screw itself up. Finally, it has no 'keep warm' setting.

What I've switched to was pricier, but I've been much happier with it. I should mention it seems that some people have had problems with theirs, but mine has been at work and has been heavily used for nearly a year now by many people and it hasn't had any problems. The only complaint I have is that if it is empty (or too low) and left on it will continue to heat until it overheats, shuts off, and then makes a constant angry tone until you unplug it and let it cool. They've made some changes to it since I bought mine, maybe this is fixed.

Do you think it's worth it for the fullpriced ($230) Morebeer Fermonster kit if you have most of the smaller stuff?

I'm at the point in my brewing timeline where I have all of the basics to do partial brews 5gal, w/o a chiller. I'm about to step up to all grain 5gal. I was going to get a 10gal kettle from Amazon for the same price as this full kit. Looking at this kit, and 8.5gal kettle seems sufficient and with all the other goodies I could gift away or store.

At this point, from the kit I only need the kettle and chiller.

Tuna is awesome, canned chicken too. I'm not sure if you're allowed to have hotpots, but I had one of these in college, and we could make hard boiled eggs in it (and mac & cheese, because college). Additionally, things like this and this can help you make other egg meals in the microwave. Make yourself an egg mcmuffin thing with nuked canadian bacon and cheese!

I have a dedicated 1.7 L electric kettle that I keep on the bathroom counter. Every night after I rinse, I set it to boil, and leave the water in there. I use the water for my am and pm rinses and cleaning the bottle after. (When it boils, it stays hot enough long enough to kill amoeba.) (I change bottles every 3 months.)

This adds another device, but you might be interested in getting an electric kettle such as this 1L Bonavita Variable Temp. Add your cold water, set your desired temperature and go do something for a few minutes, come back and your water is ready. You can go cheaper and get something like this which is not gooseneck since you're not doing a pourover. Either way, a fast and easy way to heat your water and easily pour into a FP, all while cheaper than a Keurig.

I've found the electric kettle to be a great thing to have around. I use it for coffee, tea, and my daily instant oatmeal.

Hamilton Beach Cool Touch Kettle: $40-50. Once the top is removed it is the only kettle I know of that has no plastic that interacts with the water. Plastic in other kettles makes the water smell and taste funny in my experience and ruins drinks. It is a double walled stainless steel electric kettle. Removing the top however does turn off the automatic shutoff features so you can't just leave it unattended. http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beach-40898-Cool-Touch-Cordless/dp/B000ES7I8A

After a zillion reviews of different keetles. I bought this a few years ago:
http://www.amazon.com/Pino-Digital-Kettle-Pro-oz/dp/B001HC54O2/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

I like it alot. I've heard of the coil dying after a few years mine is going strong still.

Unlike most kettles, the inside is mostly stainless steel except for some plastic on the lid. The digital accuracy is plus or minus 3 degrees -- it cycles around the goal temp to keep the water at that temp for like 1 hour. then it will shut off.

It's not cheap -- but I wanted something that works and was mostly metal.

u/ClimateMaster · 1 pointr/tea

I actually ended up getting this one. It has a button to set the temp you want, was cheaper than the other ones. Not bad.

Okay, so any reusable water bottle will do you, and I'll explain why.

First, if locals can drink the water then heavy metals aren't a concern. What is a concern is bacteria, viruses, an amoebas in the water. And the safest and most effective way to neutralize all of those is by boiling.

So what you are going to do is bring a very small dropper bottle of bleach (or Aqua Mira two part solution if you don't trust standard bleach) and a stinger/immersion heater or collapsible kettle. When you get to Jordan, you are going to get your hands on a bucket. I'm editing my original comment, because my method is obsolete. The big bucket heater I use for my method is no longer sold in the voltage you need. My original comment is at the bottom, but I've got the same technique for you with different tools (and likely the same time commitment).

The goal here is to boil up your water supply in advance. Given that only small stingers or electric kettles exist which will allow Jordan's voltage, I'd go with the kettle. Fill the kettle. Set it to boil. Once it has boiled, give it a few drops of bleach as a residual disinfectant to keep your pristine water from gaining new nasties. Pour the hot bleach water into your bucket. Fill the kettle. Set it to boil. Once it has boiled, ... you get the point. Fill the bucket.

Now you have a bucket full of warm, but potable water. Let it cool down further and it becomes room temperature, drinkable water.

Refill your reusable water bottle from this stash of potable drinking water. What kind of reusable water bottle? Whatever kind you already have lying around the house.

I've used ice buckets in my hotel room as buckets. I've done single cups of tea in a hot-drinks go-mug (when I haven't had time for the water to cool down but didn't want to drink straight hot water). I've been given brand new, solid plastic wastebaskets to use as a bucket. And on only one occasion, I purchased an actual bucket. I recommend making your water for the next day during the night before as that way it cools down sufficiently overnight and you aren't quenching your thirst with uncomfortably warm water.

Fill the bucket from your hotel room's faucet and then put the immersion heater into the bucket of water, and plug it in (don't plug it in before immersing it in water or it won't work; plug in after). This will slowly, oh.so.slowly bring the water to a rolling boil. Once it is at a rolling boil, you leave your heater in the water but you unplug the heater and let the water cool down.

At the first blush, this seems to be an overpriced teapot, however, I see some potential value in it. Essentially, it's a programmable variable temperature kettle with a basket for tea (my apologies for stating the obvious), and, although it sounds like a ridiculously over-engineered solution to a simple problem, I've heard of people using similar devices; this one in particular:

Cuisinart TEA-100 PerfecTemp Programmable Tea Steeper and Kettle

This device doesn't speak to me, but, I think, it would be a great value at quarter the price, somewhat on par with existing ones at half the price and, um, unreasonable at the suggested future retail price.

Good luck to the creators, I see they've already secured enough funding. My hope is, this device will help interested people to get into tea.

What do you dislike about the design - The plastic handle? The base? The shape of the kettle?

If you can narrow that down, it will help with suggestions.

The Cosori isn't stainless, but it's still pretty attractive if the matte black works with your kitchen. OXO makes a stainless one that is pretty popular around here.

So we use one like this: https://www.amazon.com/HadinEEon-Variable-Temperature-Electric-Protection/dp/B07HT3FXCY/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=electric+kettle+2+liter&qid=1569181722&smid=A393JJ1Z5FPQ17&sr=8-8

We chose this because it can sit on the counter in our house while we arent camping and it looks normal. We do our best to buy items that serve more than one purpose so the cost per use goes down.

We use it to heat water for showers, make coffee, and sometimes make ramen noodles while camping. It packs away easily and heats up quick.

Yeah, let me see if I can find it. It was only fifteen bucks too, iirc.

Kettle

Here we go!

I don't know that there is an all-in-one AeroPress solution with kettle and grinder, but I have looked into ultra-portability, and I think with the right bag, even though you might make some compromises (the grinder doesn't fit in the AeroPress, the AeroPress doesn't fit into the kettle), I think you can get a fairly sweet portable kit. For me, this means I don't need capacities any larger than 500 mL. So, here are some things I've looked at:

  • Ultra thin collapsable silicone electric kettle
  • 300g travel food scale
  • AeroPress Go (Yes, I'm definitely getting one)

I own the JavaPresse hand grinder. I love, love, love this grinder, but my only gripe is that the diameter is a bit small for my hands, and they tend to cramp up when grinding. I'm open to a portable hand grinder that has a larger diameter, and shorter. The Porlex grinder seems like it might be a good fit.

The only thing that I haven't really found to my liking is the perfect bag to carry everything in, and a portable air-tight opaque container to carry whole coffee beans.

Aicok Electric Kettle Temperature Control, AICOK Stainless Steel Tea Kettle with Variable Temp, Cordless Electric Water Kettle with 1500W SpeedBoil, Auto Shut Off and Boil-Dry Protection, 1.7-Liter Boiler https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G27F4LP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_seYUDb9RHKB05
It's Amazing I highly recommend

Get yourself one! I have https://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beach-40880C-Electric-Stainless/dp/B00UFQ2LJ2/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1549264784&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65 . It is slower than an electric kettle in the UK as it is about half the power but it's still much quicker and more convenient than using a kettle on the hob or the microwave.

I purchased this one a few weeks ago for $70. Not a complete temperature control, just 5-6 presets at different temps. I tested it using an instant thermometer and found it to be within 2 degrees F. I’ve been happy with it so far. It also has a “maintain temp” setting that will keep it at the set temperature once it reaches it.

Edit- the wording of your post isn’t clear, are you saying $50 is too much, or you’re looking for one that is around $50? I’m not familiar with how much the Bonavita one is, but I doubt you can find one much cheaper than $50 if you want electric with temp control.

Take a look at Aeropress. It isn't true expresso, but it is really excellent coffee and only costs $35. My setup:

Aeropress

An electric kettle with temperature options like this: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HT3FXCY

A simple manual coffee grinder like this: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B010UJZ5XW

A manual and fun-to-use milk frother like this: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B010E1ZQVC

Buy coffee from a local or mail-order coffee roaster: I like Dunn Bros. best in our neighborhood.

Actually, my setup isn't like these, it is these. My SO and I are enjoying latte's, Americanos, and mochas. It is fun to make, really delicious, and cheap.

  1. boil some water (using this for example)

  2. get a cup (example)

  3. put a tea bag in there (example and
    example)

  4. pour hot water all the way to the brim (example)

  5. let it sit like that for a few minutes and after a few minutes take the bag out and put it in a new cup that is half filled with hot water so you can reuse the tea bag and put a lid on the new cup and set it aside

  6. put some sugar in there if you want (I don't recommend) or get some chocolate (I recommend)

  7. Enjoy your tea!
