I think i can make out "intermatic" on the left piece. Quick Google search looks like they make lighting timers.

I know you posted this to /r/arduino, but you didn't explicitly say you wanted this to be a micro-controlled project. Also it appears that your scope is very small.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but maybe you should look into a pre-built timer, such as a reliable: Altronix 6062 Timer

TLDR: Keep out of direct sunlight and you should be all good.

Good question but I bit complicated the way you asked This can be a bit controversial but I come out on the side of "snakes don't need UVB light." There are some that will assert that certain breeds do better wtih UVB but I am skeptical of those findings. Anyway you look at it your snake should not be put in direct sunlight. You can't control the sun with a thermostat and on a sunny day the sun could make the enclosure dangerously hot. I like to keep my snakes on a 12/12 day/night cycle. I do this with a standard light timer. Many people would be totally fine with just natural light and as long as you keep the snake out of direct sunlight I think this is a good option. As for your heating. I don't like heat lamps. In my experience they suck humidity out of the air. Humidity can be a problem for people who use aquariums even without a heat lamp.

I have the vacuum version Ranar and it's been a good unit except for the electronic timer.

The smaller unit would be perfect for my shop. In 6 years I've only needed to burn 3 larger screens. 1 for a customer and 2 for me doing some midnight political sign work.

If the twist timer was more accurate it would be sweet. I had to replace the electronic one on mine and Ranar wanted $80 for it. I got a Chinese one from Amazon. Was $15 when I got it, did take a little figuring out but has worked flawlessly.

As /u/king_human stated:
Alarms:
Harbor Freight and other stores, sell inexpensive alarms you can put on your doors and windows. http://www.harborfreight.com/wireless-door-and-window-alarm-92745.html

Motion sensor lights http://www.harborfreight.com/36-led-solar-security-light-69644.html

Security cameras you can hook up to your computer. You can even get a web cam to do the work. http://www.harborfreight.com/weatherproof-security-camera-with-night-vision-47546.html
Always go with a camera featuring night vision.
If you've got more cash, a professional security service and/or more expensive camera system that emails photos and sends alerts. Some baby monitors do this as well.

Put various lights (and tv or radio) in the house on random timers. http://www.amazon.com/Watchdog-Guardian-House-Sitter-Radios/dp/B00H5A8QDG/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1413568449&sr=8-4&keywords=random+light+timers

Don't put empty boxes of recent purchases out in the garbage. It's a great way for thieves to see that you just got a new TV or computer. Likewise, don't carry in valuable or expensive purchases within site of anyone. Pull in and shut garage then unload the car.

Indoor motion sensors on your lights are good too. They walk in and a light goes on, they might just bail. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Westek-360-Degree-Indoor-Motion-Activated-Light-Control-MLC9BC-4/202524824?N=5yc1vZc32r

Dogs are great. I have a two. Not everyone can have them, but they're a great deterrent. If you can't get one, put out dog bowls and leashes. Put those emergency pet stickers in highly visible locations. More subtle than a fake 'Beware of Dog' sign. http://www.amazon.com/SAFETY-234001-2-Count-Static-Window/dp/B00079YTTC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413568825&sr=8-1&keywords=emergency+pet+sticker

Keep purses, computers, keys and other important/valuable items, out of site of windows. Make the thief work to find what they want.

Engrave your valuables along with recording via picture and serial numbers which comes in handy for insurance claims. http://www.harborfreight.com/electric-engraver-46099.html

Check your house for unscrewed/burned out light bulbs, things you can see from outside and remedy those items.

Deadbolts are your friend, but make sure they're installed properly.

Replace glass in sidelights, low windows and doors, with shatterproof glass if you can afford it.

Arm yourself. If you have crooks bold enough to break in while you're home, who knows what they will do. Be prepared.

You've been hit once, it wouldn't be unlikely you'll be hit again unless you make it harder for it to happen.
