Use whatever watch you like, and add one of these nice clipper units.

Through a combination of laziness and other commitments (watching my son while my wife was out of town), I was only able to do my swims this week - no runs or bikes (it was a "rest week" with only short workouts scheduled anyway).

Not thrilled about that - however, one of the reasons I had to miss a bike ride was to go check out a used bike that I wound up purchasing. So I'm finally the proud owner of a road bike! No more hybrid riding for me!

Now I'm just trying to get that bike "ride-ready" - clipless pedals (which I've never used before), a bike computer (unlike my old bike, I think I'm going to put a computer on this one which has cadence measurement. Anyone have a recommendation? Right now I'm leaning towards this one), and a saddle bag with tire wrenches, spare tubes and a co2 inflator. Hoping to be able to take it out on the road later this week.

> I’m 21 and use a cart (which are apparently for old people).

Didn't Wysocki start going world champ shortly after starting to pull a Delta?

Seriously though, tons of pros use carts. Take any razzing with good humor.

I'm old and use a cart but I'm embarrassed for it because I suck. I defend myself by pointing out that half my cart is full of snacks & juice boxes for the kids.... which it actually is, allowing me to keep them happier for longer outings and me happier for not having to take off and put on a 30 pound pack every 2 minutes. They just run up and grab what they want and I've got a little trash bag on the back.

Edit to add: I put a bicycle bell on my Zuca by the handle and it's great! When the little ones wander or want to hit playgrounds near a couple holes I just ring to call them back. I also have a cell mount I can use to record my own throws right there.

>How come there isn't like, a analog gauge that I can attach to my bike handlebars like how cars have?

There are. They're crap.

u/FishingForCars · 4 pointsr/legaladvice

Here's a brochure from Mesa PD. It has similar pictures. The website is irrelevant. The prosecutor is going to use the definitions you quoted above. A motorized wheelchair is used by one person for mobility. You are not going to be able to seriously argue that you're using a GoPed with a seat because you're physically disabled.

I didn't see anything prohibiting motorized bicycles in Tucson. If you're worried about speeding, why don't you get a speedometer for your bike and keep it at 15 mph or under? That's a better solution than trying to find some "creative" workaround for legally using a GoPed. If you show up in front of a judge with an argument like that, I seriously doubt you'd win.

So, what do we know about your dad from looking at his bike.
He rides a custom titanium frame, and has ROL wheels (he had to do research and order direct to get those). He has a power meter and garmin already. He uses Campy. Cinelli bar tape. Your dad has style and isn't a cycling noob. All his component choices are very personal.

I'd recommend getting him a gift card to his favorite bike shop. For small stuff you can get at Amazon, maybe a better garmin mount http://www.amazon.com/K-Edge-Handlebar-Computer-Mount-Garmin/dp/B00DR7CDPS

Garmin wireless speed sensor (he already gets cadence from his power meter), this way he can eliminate the gaudy garmin meter attached to his chain stay

Fuel economy. The more RPM you turn, the more gas you burn.

I would recommend you grab a $30 combination hour meter/tachometer that will tell you the RPM you’re turning. When just running around gently, shift around 4000-4500 rpm, when you want to go fast, twist it to closer to 6000 or more. If it sounds wrong at those high revs, back it down.

Oh whoops, I just linked the first one I found. This is the model I have. The battery life is a non-issue, I just replaced it for the first time a week ago. It seems well-built, I'm not really concerned about it breaking.

u/jzwinck · 2 pointsr/cycling

No problem, they have a wireless version!

If you can't find that one in stock (as at Amazon), here's another good choice in the category:

Only $50.

u/overmyIThead · 2 pointsr/bicycling

I was going to get a cat eye until I found the Sigma BC16.12 STS CAD. Just watch the installation video, it's what sold me. Does everything you need (including cadence) for dirt cheap. I couldn't be happier (my first computer, btw). It had the correct wheel length already set out of the box, no programming needed. The magnet for the cadence is now much smaller and goes on the backside of the pedal bolt.

u/Kilbourne · 2 pointsr/Ultralight

Here is a small one that might work for you.

Here is a cheap but well-featured one that will work now and for map-wayfinding later.

u/celocanth13 · 2 pointsr/bicycling

I use this which is not cheap but I like it better than a chest strap and it's more accurate than the wrist-based one on my 735xt.

Look harder at the Cateyes, I had 2 of these before I went to my Edge. Actually still have one laying around but I lost one of the magnets.

u/call_me_cthulhu_ · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I'm not sure if this counts because its an add on but if it doesn't then maybe this. The compass may be an obvious thing you want but think about it, no electronics so youd want to have a map right? Okay what if you cant figure out which was it north? Or what if you don't have a map altogether? The flint I'd definitely want more because I think fire is one of the most useful tools in order to survive. Exposure is just as deadly as an animal and you aren't going to want to be eating anything raw that you may catch. Both are really useful to have in any kind of survival situation and I still need both for my pack.

Footwear in general is bad to skimp out on in situations like this.

Happy 'caching!

u/taonzen · 2 pointsr/cycling

Well, you could try one of those ones that doesn't need any batteries. I found one on Amazon.

However, on my own bike I have a Bell like this. Haven't had any problems, and it has the same feature set as some of the more expensive ones.

I also have a wired Bell F20 on another bike. Yeah, wires are old-school, but it's one less battery.

u/trichik · 2 pointsr/triathlon

Good for you!

Lifting 2-3x a week is great- for your overall health as much as for tri training. In my experience (and my friends who race) it is protective against tri training related injuries. I usually do a full body circuit type thing at the gym for 30 min 2-3 times a week. I have also found doing some running specific exercises 2-3x a week at home after my runs to be helpful as well. As women, we are to be prone to weak glutes/hips and standard weight training may not address it. Here are the ones I do: http://strengthrunning.com/2011/02/the-itb-rehab-routine-video-demonstration/ and http://strengthrunning.com/2012/01/the-standard-core-routine-video-demonstration/. You don't need to go straight to doing all of these 2-3x a week- maybe add a workout a week until you are at an amount of strength work that feels appropriate to you.

I recommend a standard timex watch (at this stage in the game, I think you are better off running by feel than getting an expensive gps watch) and a bike computer like this one (fancy wireless http://www.amazon.com/CatEye-Wireless-Bicycle-Computer-CC-RD300W/dp/B003GNTCJI) or this (cheaper and just as functional http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Bike-Protege-5-Function-Computer/dp/B000R9EIES).

Also- remember to gradually increase your training, and make sure your body is keeping up with the stress you are putting on it. Definitely don't want you to get hurt or burnt out! Hope this helps you out :) keep it up!

u/SirTwitchALot · 2 pointsr/bicycling

If you just want cheap, just search ebay for "bike computer" Hundreds of them for under $3. They're all cheaply built, so you might want to buy two in case one breaks. I use one of these on my commuter bike and it's great because it's so cheap that I don't care if it's damaged or stolen. They do ship direct from China, so expect at least 2 weeks for delivery.

I used to use the Planet Bike Protege 9.0 on my road bike. Great basic computer with a lot of features for the price. Only one button, and it displays a ton of data on one screen.

I now use a Sigma bc 2209 MHR. It captures a lot more data and can be connected to a computer by USB to download ride data.

If you want to go really high end, lots of people seem to like the Garmin Edge series computers. They'll do everything your phone does and they won't die four hours in if you ever start doing any touring.

EDIT: You can just stop by your local bike shop and look at computers too. For the most part, the differences between one computer and another come down to what they record and how they display it. They're surprisingly simple machines, so you don't generally see accuracy differences between models. My $3 Chinese computer is just as accurate as my Sigma. Be sure to do a wheel roll out instead of using the values in the manual. You'll get much better accuracy.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/bicycling

If you're only looking for a simple spedometer, you could get the $12 one. The $80 one probably has more features. For instance, my spedometer cost me $35, but it also can tell me:

  • Current speed

  • Speed comparator

  • Ride time

  • Trip distance

  • Dual odometer (for two wheel sizes)

  • Average speed

  • Maximum speed

  • Clock

  • Temperature

    Here's a link.
u/Plutarch_Rime · 2 pointsr/EDC

I do not carry it regularly, and as a consequence it isn't the most portable of them, but it works quite well:

Suunto A10. For awhile I look for the one I used to have as a Boy Scout. This one is a little better.

A lot of cheap, no-name compasses work like shit, frankly (the ones you see on eBay shipped from overseas). It's worth buying one with a reputation if you're going to go that route. I'd certainly buy another Suunto if I needed to.

u/ricki42 · 2 pointsr/bikecommuting

I was looking for the same thing, also to free up space on the handlebar so I can mount a bag there, and thought that extender would solve the issue. It finally arrived (took a month), and it doesn't really fit my fork. This is the fork mount and this is my fork where it is supposed to be mounted. My fork has this sort of recess where the mount should sit; I'll have to see if I can cut off some of the rubber on the mount where it attaches to make it fit.

In the meantime, the thing that holds the light in the picture is this https://www.amazon.com/Minoura-Accessory-Adjustable-LW-Clamp-Devices/dp/B00810V1DG/ which seems to do the trick and also has more space to attach several lights or reflectors.

this compass is amazing, as for the knife I agree with geetarobob that the f1 should fufill your needs if you've got the grip. how much are you willing to spend on a knife?

u/raygundan · 1 pointr/funny

Really straightforward. A simple wireless one like this has three bits to install. One on a spoke, one in a fixed location the spoke goes past as the wheel turns, and the little screen/computer where you can see it and push buttons.

They get considerably more elaborate, and I spent about four seconds finding this one to use as an example... so there might be better units for the same money or cheaper units than this, even.

The older wired style units would probably be a pain in the arse, and require a cable from the sensor to the computer that would have to be run through the chair's tubes or zip tied to the outside or something... but you could probably find one (especially used) for almost nothing.

Edit: Probably just running the Strava app (or similar) on your phone would be easier, though.

u/Rehd · 1 pointr/bicycling

I don't think it matters too much. Mine is pretty basic, it just velcros onto the handlebar. Just make sure of the following:

  • It will fit the handlebar as he would use it. Shouldn't be a problem with velcro, but where would he position it? I put mine on the stem but some people may want to turn it sideways and have it on the handlebar. Now that I'm looking at them, looks like some mounts are a bit more extravagant. I like how mine can be detached easily and then put into my pocket without me noticing much if I'm going downtown since there's no mount bracket.

  • If it's a touch phone, it's always nice to be able to use the touch controls through the plastic.

  • Make sure the phone fits.

There's not much to it, my mount cost me 10 bucks and it's seen literally hundreds of miles with no problems. I'm pretty sure this is my mount.

Because I had just mentioned her in another post, I'll go with my daughter. She's 3 years old, she's gotten all of her mother's beauty, our combined brains, and all of my personality. She's willful and fiery and outspoken, beautiful, and mimics me like no tomorrow. Sometimes that's not great, like when she cusses (oops..) but mostly it's amazing. When she thinks no one is paying attention, she talks to her toys like I talk to her, she gestures like I do, she'll even walk like I do sometimes. It still blows my mind that I'm her world, so she wants nothing more than to be like her Papa.

Sometime's she's a terror. She's in her picky-about-food and I-know-how-to-get-my-diaper-off stage, but it's all forgotten when I've been out of the house and she sprints at me when I get back and flies into my arms and will tell me EVERYTHING I've missed at a talking speed that my early-30's male brain barely comprehends, or she'll grab my face and kiss me and tell me she loves me, or if she's scared she'll hide behind me or I'll pick her up and hold her until she feels better and she thinks that no matter what the problem was, i can scare it away. There is no monster, no shadow that I cannot defeat in her mind, and when I hold her, I feel like it's true too.

Last summer, I had scooped her up quickly when two dogs barking their fool heads off ran around the corner of our apartment building and in the space of time that was really only like 4 seconds (the owner was right behind, frantically trying to secure the dogs), I had immediately resolved that I, unarmed and clutching a 35 pound child in one arm, was going to one-handed fist fight two angry, very large-breed dogs, and this did not strike me as a not-likely-to-succeed idea until afterwards. She wasn't even panicking. She just naturally assumed "yes, yes my Papa can one-handed fist fight angry dogs, and win. I'm perfectly safe". I can't even describe someone having that level of faith in you.

Jaysus I could go on. Sorry. I rambled. I love my little one.

Prize of choice!

*note, thankfully I did NOT have to punch any dogs, the owner stopped them quickly and everyone, man and beast alike, went home unharmed.

The [Sawyer Mini water filter] (http://www.amazon.com/Sawyer-Products-SP128-Filtration-System/dp/B00FA2RLX2/) is smaller, can be screwed onto standard disposable plastic water bottles, and is capable of filtering far more water since you can reuse it. If you pick up a [stainless steel water bottle] (http://www.amazon.com/Klean-Kanteen-40oz-Classic-Loop/dp/B0093IRPSA/), you can boil water in it as well.

You should always have a backup when it's a survival situation; [Israeli water purification tablets] (http://www.amazon.com/Taharmayim-Israeli-Water-Purification-Tablets/dp/B0077TB65U/) will both look legit and be legit if she actually needs to use them.

There are always more items you might add to a first aid kit, but [this one is pretty well rounded] (http://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Medical-Kits-Weekender-Kit/dp/B000G7YIL4/). If you want a cheaper base kit (i.e if you want to add your own items), [this other kit] (http://www.amazon.com/Adventure-Medical-Kits-Tripper-First/dp/B0033B4I9C/) will also do the job.

Battery-free lights can be good, but AA batteries are common enough that a [good tactical light that takes AAs] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006O4CELO) might be a more convenient option.

If she has a tablet (if tablet, go for the 12W) or E-reader (7W), [solar power might be an option] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F3LPODY). With [rechargeable AA batteries] (http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-BK-3MCCA8BA-Pre-Charged-Rechargeable-Batteries/dp/B00JHKSN5I) and a [USB recharger] (http://www.amazon.com/SunJack-Battery-Charger-Ni-Mh-Batteries/dp/B00PZ6V99U/), the flashlight and any other AA device (like a [small, separate radio] (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-ICF-S10MK2-Pocket-Radio-Silver/dp/B00020S7XK)) could work indefinitely, as well as any regular USB-charged device.

[ResQme] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000IE0F12/) may not be strictly zombie-related, but if you buckled up as per Rule #4, you may want a way to quickly exit your vehicle if your seatbelt jams and the windows and door won't open normally.

There are a lot of compasses out there, but [this one] (http://www.amazon.com/Suunto-SS012063013-A-10-Compass/dp/B000FEXZGW) is simple, reliable, and won't break easily. It's also designed to be laid over maps without getting in the way of reading them.

[Pocket chainsaw] (http://www.amazon.com/Chainmate-CM-24SSP-24-Inch-Survival-Pocket/dp/B0026OOS60). Won't be useful against zombies, but if you ever needed to cut a tree or thick branches and don't want to carry an axe...

...You can also carry a [hatchet] (http://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-78506935-X7-Hatchet-14-Inch/dp/B0002YTO7E/) instead. This one has a short blade, which will cut into their heads and not get stuck like others. It'll also do a fine job cutting smaller branches.

For non-zombie/woodwork related tasks, the [Victorinox Forester] (http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Swiss-Army-Grip-Series/dp/B003EH82TC/) has your bases covered.

You should also include World War Z (the book, and the movie if you'd prefer), I Am Legend (both the book and the film), and the Walking Dead series (TV, comics, and both seasons of the Telltale game series on Steam).

u/FatalErection · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Well that's some place to start. If they're into physical outdoor activities think what they might need or don't need but will find useful.

Backpacks when they go hiking? Water bottles for when they ride the bikes? New helmets for cycling? Or something like this for their bikes to monitor how far they've gone or how fast they're going.

Trust me it doesn't have to be a huge gesture. My parents are more impressed when I get a present that reflects them as opposed to how much I paid for it. I'm the same way now that I'm older. When I was a kid I wanted the best of everything and the most expensive. Now I'm moved when my little cousins go in on my birthday and get me a $2 Transformer key chain.

Ill definitely try different shorts as Ive always wanted to try bib shorts since I've heard such great things. Ill probably also move my nicerish saddle that im used to over and see if that fixes anything. u/taiguy · 1 pointr/DIY

Doing some reading and googling on the subject it seems like it's not hard to get in the ballpark but you need a tach to get exact settings dialed in.

I put both H and L screws all the way in and then backed out a turn and a half. I figured out that too rich or too lean on the L screw and the engine will die. Too rich and it will start to "4 stroke", it sounds audibly different, the pop is every other stroke instead of every stroke. I'd go ahead and turn your L screw counterclockwise until you hear this so you know what too rich sounds like. Too far clockwise and it's too lean and the engine dies. I tried to get it somewhere in the middle.

I used the T or idle screw to set my idle speed, Husqvarna says that's supposed to be 2700 rpm for my saw but it's impossible for me to tell without a tach. The other way to do it is to dial up the idle speed until the centrifugal clutch activates and the chain starts to spin on idle. Then back out the screw until the chain stops spinning.

The H screw is a bit trickier for me right now. I'm supposed to aim for 9000 rpm for my upper range but again, it's impossible to do without a tach. Too lean (clockwise) and the saw will run faster than 9000, lose power, heat up, and possibly seize. Too rich (counterclockwise) and it will also lose power. I also noticed that if I had it too rich, the throttle response wasn't very good.

All in all the saw works but I placed an order on amazon for a tach to get it really dialed in.

Basically, they attach to your bars or stem (depending on the style) and create a secondary handlebar mount out a few inches from your bars. Might be enough to attach a bag, though probably not great for much weight.

I get you. This one doesn't do power, but I've been using it for like.... 5 years or something with no complaints. Works really well. I'm finally going to upgrade to the Wahoo line but yeah, for the money this guy is a trooper.

The best has an algorithm that monitors change in heart rate to estimate power, very useful.

The 2nd best.

I use the following:
click me!

It is wired, which i wanted so i didn't have to worry about the signal getting lost, plus it has cadence which is good for training. You can save 2 profiles as well so it will work on 2 bikes. For $30 its awesome.

I use this cycling computer:
http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Bike-9-Function-Computer-Temperature/dp/B000AO9R8C/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1299266806&sr=8-13

I even used it on my motorcycle. Works up to 99mph!

Also a great helmet mirror that was indispensable : http://www.amazon.com/Blackburn-01002-Bike-Helmet-Mirror/dp/B000BNTY58/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1299266867&sr=8-3

Its like a third eye on the back of your head. I hope this helps.

For sale I have my 2015 Scott CR1 30. Size 58/XL I am 6'1" and I love the fit of this bike. This bike is in great condition and has only 600 miles to its name. I bought this bike specifically to do a triathlon and now that I have that complete I am selling it to focus on running.

This bike new cost $1299+tax (MSRP says $1499, but I only paid 1299). So I have it listed at $750, for a 600 mile old carbon fiber bike you won't beat it. It has been serviced twice in the 600 miles I have had it, both times at the Trek store in Ballantyne.

Specs link: http://www.bobs-bicycles.com/2015-CR1-30.html

Included with the bike: Saddle bag with spare tube and tire levers ($35 value), frame mounted tire pump ($35 value), rear light ($10 value), Shimano PD-M520 SPD Pedals ($30 value)

Below are the add-ons you can add for extra on top of the $750:

A used power meter.

Failing that, a powercal, which is a heart rate monitor with an algorithm that analyzes the rate of HR change to estimate power output - better than a plain hr monitor, not as good as a power meter.

u/questmaster789 · 1 pointr/pics

I've never seen one that was included, but they are fairly cheap and easy to install. Here is one that seems to be about the average price of one.

I've ordered from Amazon US so I assume you can order from Amazon UK. May be faster

Hi! Thank you very much for responding! I've never used a watch with GPS, so I don't know how do they work: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2/176-0434454-7433539?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=gps+watch

What type of GPS do you use? A Garmin for cars? A smartphone with GPS? Do you have a picture of your diagrams? It sounds interesting.

What about using a compass?: http://www.amazon.com/Cammenga-Phosphorescent-Clam-Lensatic-Compass/dp/B0016SRA4Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457280817&sr=8-1&keywords=compass++Cammenga

Yep, missed the first aid stuff under hygiene. Looking at the list again I'd recommend Benadryl.

The ranger station for the places you're going through will have maps. If you haven't already you should call them up before your trip anyways to learn about what's been going on lately... lots of bear activity, rock slides, water contamination, or any other seasonal/temporary hazards.

A compass might be "heavy" but there's so many ways your phone can become unusable, I wouldn't recommend relying on it. I'd suggest you consider your phone to be the heavy item and ditch it if anything. Plus, you can get something like this which doubles as both your compass and your signaling mirror, which now that I check is missing from your list. Alternatively this one only weighs one ounce but lacks the mirror. On the trails I hike I can honestly get away with a button compass because civilization is never that far away. In most cases if I can head towards a direction within 10-15 degrees of accuracy I will be just fine.

u/genericdude999 · 1 pointr/Survival

You're not wrong. I can squeak in under $200 with a few Bics + a cheapie Mora to split or shave some firewood if I need to. Also nothing wrong with a simple button compass as a backup for my GPS. I would not choose compass over GPS though, if I didn't happen to have topo maps for the exact region I happened to be stranded in.

I use a wheel mounted speed sensor, it counts the rotations. Works well for me and is water resistant and has a long battery life. Im not a runner but there are also ones that go on your shoe.

Bike sensor I use

Running pod (I dont use this but I assume it works as well as the bike sensors)

u/IRPancake · 1 pointr/pressurewashing

I'd go with this one

The one I use is different but I'll be using these in the future, they seem to be better quality, and the ones I use seem to read the RPM incorrectly (though it may be because it's a 2 cylinder).

I wouldn't worry about it, if the pump says an 8hp is fine, then it should be okay. I would let the engine run for an hour or two without the pump to let it break in.

Do you one better. Price is pretty good too...

Buttons are super simple, have never had a problem with it even when wet, cadence feature is nice, but probably could have skipped it.

u/Nomadlord · 1 pointr/Survival

KABAR for the knife. No doubt. They have many different styles now not just the standard USMC which is still amazing for what you want. Compass just use the stars, lol just kidding. Not sure what your budget is but get something like this. You can probably find for cheaper, just be careful, as many times you get what you pay for is still alive and well.

u/Feckless · 1 pointr/90daysgoal

As a disclaimer, I am not kidding here. If you have a bike where the wheel is reachable one of those things will probably work. They count the rotations and calculate distance/speed.
