I have terrible chronic migraines and I’m very scent-sensitive to perfume, cleaner, cooking smells, and smoke. No one smokes in our house (thank God) but we do get a lot of wildfires. My house has bad vent circulation and there seems to be a vent connecting my bedroom and the downstairs kitchen, where my room quickly fills with smoke or food smells. My partner also has terrible seasonal and dust allergies, along with an autoimmune condition that is made worse by allergies. We live with three dogs and in a rural area where during harvest season things get really hard for them. We had issues for the longest time, but I’ve found some solutions that might also work for you.

The biggest thing that has helped the both of us is getting a HEPA filter. Ours is energy efficient, and has a carbon pre-filter that does an excellent, unmatched job at clearing out smells, smoke, and allergens. It was about $130 CAD and the pre-filters last about three months, with the actual filters lasting 6 months to a year depending on your conditions. We got the machine size that’s for medium size rooms, but there are other units for larger spaces. The air quality is so much better and smoke/smells can disappear in about 10 minutes. I turn mine up to max as soon as there’s a hint of stuff in the air and it prevents migraines. Link to large room version

You can also keep it cycling on low all day if that’s better. You might also be able to find a HEPA filter attachment for your air conditioner if you know the make and model.

Sometimes if things are extra bad, taking a small spritzer bottle with some water and spraying it into the air will help weigh down the smell so it won’t be so “in your face.” This combines well with the HEPA filter.

If you have these issues while out and about, I would recommend looking into carbon filter face masks as well. I take the bus and I’m looking into them. Vogmasks seem to be a favourite in the asthma/MCAS community for effectiveness and the colours they come in.

For now, I also have a little ionizer that acts as a mini-air purifier. It clips to my shirt so I can wear it wherever. I don’t find it to be extremely effective, but I notice a difference when I don’t have it. Link to similar one I have

I hope some of these things work for and are accessible to you, and I’m sorry about your shitty neighbour. I hope that if things can’t be negotiated that you find something else that works. And FWIW, you inhaling a small amount of smoke won’t be enough to test positive for a DUI or on any other test.

If it's as bad as you say it is, and management can't/won't do anything, and moving is not an option, look into getting a stand alone air purifier. I'd double check your ventilation if it's as bad as you say it is; however, an air purifier would be your best option.

Absolutely!

Here is my model. This would be the newer version.

They run about $100 and it’s as easy as plugging it into the wall and turning it on as needed. I’ve used it for cooking smells as well as pet odors (in my dog’s last days, he had terrible ear infections and went to the bathroom everywhere), and I was satisfied with how it worked. It’s also supposed to work well for preventing allergens and germs, so I’ll kick it on during peak allergy times and whenever I’m sick. It was a gift that I never imagined I would use as much as I do, and I’d highly recommend it!

My son had eczema pretty bad on his face/under his eyes. What helped us was:

Hepa air purifier for his room. For reference we got this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01CTN024Y/

Replaced his stuffed animal lovies with duplicates

Put a dust mite mattress protector on his crib mattress

Applied Thayers rose petal witch hazel with a round cotton pad on the eczema before applying eucerin baby eczema cream 3 times a day.

When we tried a steroid cream, the eczema came back with a vengeance. I don’t know if it was one or more of the above things that helped, but he’s been eczema free for about 3 months.
