OH YEAH. He is one of my favorite authors, ever. The Diversity of Life won him a Pulitzer if I recall correctly, and is a must read for anyone who loves non-fiction and biology. Consilience is a heady read and well worth the time. The Future of Life is a call to arms in defense of the environment, and as well written and straightfoward as anyone could ask. Kind of like An Inconvenient Truth, if it was written by one of the most brilliant and silver-tongued biologists of our time instead of the inventor of the internet.

Since we're talking about Edward O. Wilson, I highly recommend The Future of Life. It's a little bit dated now, but it remains one of the most important books one can read about climate change.

I read this book about a decade ago, and it gave me a heads up as to what was eventually going to happen to the Great Barrier Reef, the melting of the Siberian permafrost, etc. Even so, he somehow managed to write the whole book with a sense of optimism.

> but the school system is being broken by charter schools popping up every other block.

No, the system is already broken beyond repair. The charters are the creative destruction of the ruined hulk.

Enjoy the Worker's Paradise. Don't feel the need to hurry back - you might even consider taking a cohort or two of your fellows with you.

Here's an interesting book you should check out. It might explain why biodiversity is important. In overly simplified terms ecosystem services, and more specificially the [resilience](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resilience_(ecology) of these services is often dependent on their diversity (which can help to withstand perturbations such as climate change and invasive species).

Holy crap, The Bluffs are beautiful.

  • I live in the Catskills.

  • I live near the original Woodstock, which is The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.

  • The Catskill Mountains were the backdrop of some of Americas first great artists including Frederic Church and Thomas Cole. In the words of Cole “Must I tell you that nether the Alps nor the Appenines, no, nor even Aetna itself, have dimmed, in my eyes, the beauty of our own Catskills? It seems to me that I look on American scenery, if it were possible, with increased pleasure. It has it’s own peculiar charm – a something not fond elsewhere. I am content with nature: would that I were with art!” 1841

  • It is the birthplace of American fly fishing and home to the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum Filled with lakes, vast forests and deep valleys, the Caskils offers some of the world’s best trout fishing – and its location as the birthplace of American fly-fishing is celebrated at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum.

  • Highest waterfalls in NYS

  • The book, My Side of the Mountain is set near where I currently live.

  • Draw a picture of a scene

  • Give advice to a character

  • Change a part of the plot to their liking

  • Write a journal passage as one of the characters

  • Have them predict what will come next.

  • Personal Response to Text: Did you enjoy the text? Do you agree/disagree with anything? Did you find anything surprising? Do you like ____ (a character in the text)?) What adjectives would you use to describe __ (a character in the text)?

Are you familiar with literature circles? I'm intrigued by them after reading Academic Reading Circles but have not yet had a chance to implement them. One blog post on literature circles gave these basic guidelines: First, individually, Ss make a connection. T checks comprehension. Then Ss in groups of four are each assigned a role: discussion director, word searcher, summarizer, illustrator. Give sentence frames for things like synthesizing (can put on a menu board at each table). Have each table record their conversation so T can review later.

I read My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George: http://www.amazon.com/Side-Mountain-Jean-Craighead-George/dp/0141312424

Funny how it worked out though, I actually didn't want to read it initially but my mother forced me to at age 9. It turned out better than expected that's for sure.

I urge you to take some Environmental Science courses, or at the very least, read The Future of Life by Edward O. Wilson. It is a great book because it retains being factual while looking at the problem from an optimistic perspective. The dangers of global climate change are not only unexaggerated, they're underreported and misunderstood, which is largely marred by society's growing cynicism toward the science behind it.

u/Readwritewrestle · 1 pointr/TOEFLWriting

There are always a few problems that get students in grammar and writing (I'm a teacher/writer myself). To improve your grammar you must demand DEMAND that everyone correct all of your errors all the time until it becomes automatic. This sounds awful, but it will be worth it, especially once you get to the professional or college level.

To improve your writing on your test you need to: taste your title, use ST words, use your strength, paraphrase a friend, and make meaning.
Taste your title to your writing means to go and use an action/description word in your title to your writing tests. Instead of writing "My Life in English" write something like, "Alive and English" or "On an English Stage" or "Terror and Good Times". Any of those brings in an image and a feeling to your writing; do one, and you'll find your marker immediately gets a favourable impression and gives you a better score.

I can't go into huge detail here (it would take too long), but there's a whole book about it that guarantees to improve your writing score 10-25%. It's on amazon and costs like $3 for an E-reader copy. It's called "Write Better Right Now: An ESL learners guide to acing the toefl". I wrote it after 8 years of teaching ESL and it works. I'm not sure if I should post a link here (https://www.amazon.ca/Write-Better-Right-Now-Instantly-ebook/dp/B071GDJFKD/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1517204562&sr=8-4&keywords=write+better+right+now) , but try the exercise I've suggested and read the first few pages of the book for free to get a feel for it. Hope it helps!

This is an English beginner book, I think it's somewhere between A1 and A2. It's not as simple as A1 but I don't think it includes all of the grammar points you learn at A2.
