I was hit by a car about 5 years ago. Nothing major but enough to shake up my nerves. I quit riding and eventually unsubscribed from this sub with my previous account.

About a year ago my wife and I got gym memberships. The gym has 2 of these bikes and I was drawn to them. I hopped on and couldn't get enough. On New Year's Eve I finished the last course.

Fast forward to about a month ago when I was out for a run one evening. I was watching the sun set and thinking about how beautiful it was and wondering why I didn't ride my bike any more. I remembered the accident and then I remembered a friend that was hit by a car while running and how he got over the fear and ran a marathon last year. The very next morning the same friend asked me out of the blue if I still had my bike and that evening we went for a ride. I don't really believe in fate but that was strange. Last week I subscribed back to r/bicycling and it seems like there's a post about somebody dying in a crash every single day but I'm going to keep riding. I regret losing the last 5 years of my life to fear and I sincerely hope that you don't do the same.

this one

It’s easy to use and I put it together myself. It folds up well and we up it in a corner in our tv room. It does have a weight limit of about 225 though.

u/8365815 · 6 pointsr/JUSTNOMIL

I'm heavy too, and have bad knees (so no inclines, hence shopping malls are great loops for walking!), but a little walk at a slow pace is better than nothing. Also this thingy. easily do a half hour without even noticing - can "work out" in a maxi skirt or PJ's while you watch TV.

OOOOhhh and that "the meds don't let me have fruits and veggies" jazz... yeah, NO. She means she has to avoid the ones with vitamin K. It's the Warfarin diet thing. (also called Coumadin, Jantoven) have your Bf talk to her doc, I bet that they gave her a big old pre-printed handout explaining she's supposed to avoid only a small list of very green green veggies but she can have plenty of other ones. Yoplait is never gonna help her lose weight, one of those tiny little cups has 18 grams of sugar in it. TERRIBLE for diabetes. She needs to cut carbs!

Wow, hun I am so sorry, this woman seems like she is living in har own reality. One where science is whatever she decides it is that day. Yikes.

Yep, then you focus on YOUR NEEDS first. It's not selfish to draw a boundary about not feeding into someone else's insanity, and this woman is deluding herself and harming herself because she is being willfully ignorant about what she needs to do. That's not your circus, not your monkeys.

Got bored and did some sleuthing. I'm pretty sure this is it. In a related note I am now very well-versed in the exercise bike market's offerings.

This one looks pretty low tech and solves the problem of the weird pedal angle. It has a 4.2/5 stars rating with 688 reviews.

I have this cheap exercise bike from Amazon. It's basic but it works for me and hasn't fallen apart after 3 years of regular use. A few caveats - I'm 5'10 and have to use the tallest seat setting, also there are 8 "gears" but I find only the highest one provides enough resistance to work up a sweat.

u/NotSuzyHomemaker · 3 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Fit Desk - this would really help me considering how much time I spend at my desk with studying. Also, I am not supposed to walk a lot and I'm supposed to bike and swim but biking on city streets is not a good idea for me.

C'mon...gimme.

  1. You may want to consider a recumbent or semi-recumbent bike. I have found regular exercise bikes can make your back sore. I have one like this that I like.

    Something like this:
    https://www.amazon.com/Exerpeutic-525XLR-Folding-Recumbent-Exercise/dp/B01MTUKQMU/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=foldable+recumbent+exercise+bike&psc=1&qid=1571793041&sr=8-4
u/michelle0686 · 2 pointsr/WeightLossAdvice

Ah right ok. Could you get a pedal exerciser? I have one and I can “cycle” at my pace in front of the tv. I have hypermobility spectrum disorder and it helps to keep me moving when I’m having a bad pain day as long as it’s not my knees or ankles obviously

Something like this?

I just ordered this off of Amazon- https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00QVJNR3G/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Will report back with my findings.

Update: It arrived yesterday. It didn't take long to assemble, and I was on it and riding fairly quickly. The first thing that I noticed was that it doesn't pedal smoothly. Maybe it needs to "break in," but it's annoying to the point where I feel it's a deal breaker. The second thing is the vibration, which isn't overly loud, but I'm pretty sure my downstairs neighbors wouldn't appreciate it much. All said, I think I'm going to send it back. I'd rather put that money towards a better model.

u/Kreblon · 2 pointsr/Fitness

Well, I have one of these. Good build quality, nearly silent, comfy seat. My only regret is that I didn't just put the money towards a mountain bike, because now that I have one the exercise bike just takes up space collecting dust. But, if you're intent on getting an exercise bike that one has my recommendation.

u/goldenbrain8 · 2 pointsr/xxfitness
u/ShaveMyWookiee · 2 pointsr/xxfitness

Have you looked at recumbent exercise bikes? I don't have any personal recommendations, but I think that those generally support more and are easier to get in/out of.

Amazon has this one that is supposed to hold up to 400lbs, if she doesn't mind holding the handles at the seat instead of the handlebars.

u/MrFurrberry · 2 pointsr/Hemophilia

exercise bike...

I'm 6'2, 200lbs... this one works really well for me, and it's extremely small and fits in the corner.

I like to hop on, and just go for a ride... put it right in front of my keyboard and the time just flies, and by the time I have finished whatever, I've ridden 7 miles / 30 minutes / 300 calories.

I have this bike. I've had it for over three years and I'd say I've put 6000-7000 miles on it and it still rides great! Only issue I've had with it is the strap broke that goes over your foot, but I find I don't need the straps at all.

I'm trying to get exercise equipment for home, mostly cardio. TLDR: is it OK to get the mid-range stuff?

I've seen moderately positive reviews for the following mid-range stuff:

this rower, this cheap bike, and e.g. kettlebells.

Many people online say to just buy the expensive stuff (e.g. Concept 2). Any thoughts on whether the mid-range stuff is really unacceptable for a non-athlete like myself, or (especially helpful) what the problem is? Is there something in-between the "Sunny" and "Concept" ranges that I'm missing? The expensive stuff would be a fairly large ding on the household budget.

Other considerations that seem to matter:

It needs to be quiet and easy to store (I have a small house & two toddlers; this will get use when they're asleep. This is also a big reason I can't go to the gym or run outside much).

I'm moderately fat right now, plan to work out about 60 minutes/day (my skinny-person pre-toddler schedule).

u/itsme_timd · 1 pointr/loseit

I'm 6'3" and 401 lbs, I have the same issue. I can't jog/run because, for now, by body can't take that much weight slamming around. I can walk/hike, and I do that when possible, but my main form of cardio right now is my stationary bike. I have a Schwinn 240 recumbent stationary bike.

The recumbent style is more comfortable for me and I'm able to ride longer because it's got some back support. It puts no strain on my joints and other than a bit of jiggling my extra weight doesn't hinder my workout.

u/Drawn23 · 1 pointr/homegym

Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase a spin bike. I'm about 240 lbs and 6 feet tall. I saw a couple on Amazon but I'm having trouble choosing. Is there anyone here that would be knowledgeable that can help me find something in the 200 - 300 dollar range? I found these models:

u/AKA_Braeburn · 1 pointr/gaming

I just picked up a Fitdesk stationary bike and it works surprisingly well. I thought I couldn't play any precise games and I would stick with Skyrim or the like. Turns out I can play Battlefield or Cod with no problems while biking. And it is surprisingly easy to lose track of time on the bike while playing a game

My one complaint is the magnetic resistant doesn't feel like a real bike in the way it pedals but still works well

u/TheShellyWebster · 1 pointr/loseit

I too have a small house and it's insanely hot here, so I just purchased [this exercise bike] (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005T4YHCE/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1). It was inexpensive as far as exercise equipment goes, and it folds up enough to fit in my closet! Might be a good fit for you. :)

u/freeradicalx · 1 pointr/NYCbike

Funny, when I play video games I'm usually looking for something that I don't already experience in my day-to-day :P

To really answer your question though, I don't think there exists any game remotely like what you describe except for maybe Crazy Taxi / Simpsons Hit & Run (Which ironically romanticize the very opposite of what I advocate in real life) and certain "smart" exercise bikes. But as an Oculus Rift owner and a fan of new media and alternate gaming I've thought a lot about the winter training potential of VR headset / bike trainer / bucking bronco tilt platform / surround sound simulator mashups.

I also once fleshed out a concept for a game that brings the rule set of an FPS / dogfight game into urban biking using laser tag equipment and smart phones, sort of an "Alleycat FPS". In reality it'd probably be terribly dangerous, at least in NYC. But if anyone's curious I can describe how it would work.

I've got this stationary bike and this elliptical on my wishlist, they both look pretty big, which kind of scares me. But I tell you, I'll make room. I'd rather be cramped than fat.

Goodnight!

Preface: I don't know shit about bikes except for the one I have.

I picked up this Sunny Spin Bike a few months ago, and am absolutely in love with it for cardio days. This was my first time doing spin ever. The whole thing is really sturdy, the resistance works great (no numbers though, so it's just a 'feel' thing as for how much resistance you add/take away) and in general it's been an absolutely perfect purchase!

I bought mine for $70, so the price helped, but even at the $300ish mark it would be worth it.

I got this one to hold me over until an airdyne came up at a steal price. I'm 6'3 200lbs and it's too small and lightweight for me. If you plan on sprints and Max efforts it will probably break/fall over with you on it. But if you just use it for warmup/cooldowns it should be fine.

u/borntomeow · 1 pointr/EDAnonymous

You could look into getting one of those small pedal machines that's like an exercise bike but just the pedal part. I think this is one that I saw linked on r/proed and saved to my wishlist.

u/TITAN_CLASS · 1 pointr/DestinyTheGame

I angle it lol. They all block the screen straight on. It's at like a 45 degree angle ya know?

I find this one to be the most comfortable I have tried though:

If you have to work 16 hours a day, then there is probably nothing you can do. But if you have a normal 8/9 hour workday most of the time, then you can do it!

Personally, I need to exercise first thing in the morning. Too many variables exist in the evening that prevents working out consistently.

I bought a basic stationary bike. Cheaper than an annual gym membership. It doesn't take up much space (I had mine in a 550 sq/ft apartment) and reduces the 10+ minutes it takes to go to a gym (one less barrier to exercising). You have no excuse not to find 30 minutes in your day for moderately intense biking. I watch my T.V. on the bike (efficient!).

If you want to add some basic resistance training, I do resistance bands. The same thing as the bike, you can do it at home and it takes up no space and costs way less than the gym.

Making the habit is key. Being able to work out at home and doing so first thing in the morning were the two changes I made that let me work out regularly with a 50 hour a week schedule while maintaining a balanced quality of life.

u/kitchbitchstitch · 1 pointr/AskWomen

They also have things called bike trainers that turn your regular bicycle into a stationary bike. Or foldable stationary bikes would be another option if you have room in a closet.
