I hope you one day get the chance to realize your dream :)

My hobby since I was 12 or so has been computer programming, and I am very fortunate to have become quite good at it, so I work remotely a couple days a week and make enough money to fund my travels. I think I had about $3000 in the bank when I left, as a buffer to get me started.

I had been dreaming about traveling for the last two years as a college undergraduate, and there were a certainly a couple "f it I'm going," moments. One was when I posted a curb alert on Craigslist and gave away all the stuff I couldn't keep in the corner of my parents attic. That night I was sitting my empty house having a beer and thought, "well, I guess I'm committed now." The second was buying a plane ticket. I procrastinated on that for some reason, perhaps because I was overthinking where I would start. Once I dropped $500 on my flight to Madrid through statravel.com (great website btw for super cheap flights if you're a student), that's when it became real.

I mainly use hostelbookers.com or hostelworld.com for recommendations, as well as suggestions from fellow travelers and hostel staff. Tripadvisor.com is pretty good too but I think that tends to cater more to a non-backpacker crowd.

Random unsolicited advice:

Use a small hiking backpack (something like 30-35 liters), and a smaller handbag to carry all your stuff. You want to be able to carry all your luggage on an airplane and not have to check anything. This messenger bag is great for your valuables.

Get a small combination padlock for hostel lockers.

If you decide to go, I wouldn't rush to buy a Eurorail pass. I'm sure it's helpful to some people, but I haven't actually met a single person yet who has one. Backpackers these days tend to be more serendipitous with transportation, either using skyscanner.net for budget airlines (I flew from Seville to Barcelona for something like 30 euros on Ryanair, but make sure if you use carry-on that it matches their size/weight guidelines or you will pay a 50 euro fee. One trick is to take a bunch of clothes out of your bag and wear them all at once, but you feel like the Michelin Man and sweat a lot), buses, or BlaBlaCar is very popular these days.

Try local beer everywhere you go.

Keep a journal on you all day and jot down random thoughts, things you do, etc.

Get a decent camera. Don't be like me and think your smart phone will cut it (how I took this picture). Now I'm actually trying to find a camera to buy. I want a used Canon Powershot G11/G12/G13 or something and haven't found anything yet in former Yugoslavia.

Be social, get out of your comfort zone, hang out in hostel lounges, and participate in their events. Speaking of which, try to find smaller, more intimate hostels, even if you want to party. Everybody staying in a hostel likes to party, and smaller places actually offer better chances to meet more people.

One piece of unconventional advice, this is something I alluded to in another comment. Solo travel can either be a wonderful opportunity to learn to love yourself, or you could set yourself up to be lonely and depressed. I recommend this book, which uses cognitive behavioral therapy to treat loneliness, help you to love yourself, and become a more attractive person (it's tailored more towards dating but is actually very beneficial even to people already in relationships). When you travel by yourself, you're somewhat in a vacuum and can experiment with core personality traits, and doing so with the help of scientifically-proven therapeutic techniques is so powerful.

If you're going for a while, you might consider exercising. I carry a set of resistance bands around with me and do weightlifting 3 times a week, modeled loosely around p90x. Day 1: back (pullups) and biceps (curls), Day 2: chest (resistance pushups), shoulders (resistance overhead press), and triceps (resistance tricep extension), Day 3: legs (resistance squats or lunges) and back (resistance deadlifts and pullups). About 16-24 sets each day, alternating your body parts after each set.

There's so much advice I could give, but the first half of this book goes pretty in depth into everything (the second half briefly goes into specific advice for different countries). Rick Steves is an authority on traveling Europe, but he tends to cater more towards the older hotel crowd, so I would get Lonely Planet Guidebooks specific to any region you're traveling.

I hope some of that massive brain dump was helpful :)

Edit: one more thing. Get an unlocked smart phone and buy sim cards wherever you go. You can get them everywhere, they cost just a few euros, and let you use several hundred megabytes or a few gigabytes of data, which is super useful for google maps and looking up random stuff while walking around.

Edit 2: For completeness, as someone mentioned below, rome2rio.com is another great website everyone uses to find transportation

u/PickleTitWhore · 24 pointsr/gainit

I bought everything new.

Titan Power Rack + dip bars = $350

Tractor Supply Horse Stall Mat = $40

Body Solid 7ft Oly bar = $95

Cap Barbell clips = $8

I scored a full set of weights (2x45 lbs, 2x35 lbs, 2x25 lbs, 2x10 lbs, 2x5 lbs, and 2x2.5 lbs) for $150 from a local gym equipment supplier via Craigslist.

Tribe 11-piece resistance band set

It's like the 2nd review down

u/mr-underhill · 12 pointsr/Fitness

If you are able to purchase them, I'd recommend resistance bands. They're not too expensive (Set on Amazon), and can simulate certain weight lift exercises. And since its bands you're not lugging heavy (and loud)

u/VMwareJesus · 11 pointsr/homegym

I hate my local gym(s). So. Damn. Much. I know it's just me. I'm impatient, intolerant, and generally just can't stand the douchers everywhere. So, I finally finished up my garage gym. It's not pretty, but it works. I just need a few more plates, and a really good deal on a row machine (and to clean up the other half of the garage).

Strength Training:

u/anthonyyyn · 9 pointsr/IWantToLearn

If you have access to a gym, they have an assisted pull-up machine. Basically you put your feet or knees on a platform, which is attached to weights, which help pull you up. you can adjust how much assistance it is giving you.

If you don't have access to a gym, you can buy some bands and try to wrap it around the handle of the pull-up bar. Then put your knees or feet on the bottom of the band, and it'll help pull you up until you can do one on your own! Amazon sells these bands, depending on how strong you want the band to be. They're also useful when stretching.

u/SIave · 8 pointsr/Fitness

Generic rubber handled spring barbell clips have an Amazon ship weight of 1.1 lbs. You could just use two sets of clips on each side, which would be 2.2 lbs. That's the only solution I can think of to keep you from buying plates, and you'll still be accurate to within 0.3 lbs, which isn't bad at all.

Resistance Bands. I have this exact set and I love them, they are so versitile and great if you travel often.

u/orangeisstupid · 5 pointsr/Fitness

In this order (more or less)

  1. Squat rack (or go for a full power rack)
  2. Adjustable bench
  3. Quality 7' barbell
  4. Weights, bumper or otherwise
  5. Caps
  6. More weights as needed
  7. Adjustable Dumbbells

Get some horse stall mat as well to put down. Thick stuff (3/4" or thicker) - like this
u/tsquaredwsu · 4 pointsr/xxfitness

I always bend my wrists when lifting. Like when I bench, the bar settles in my palm, with my wrist at a 90 degree angle rather than stacked. I've always struggled with weak wrists.
Would wrist straps help? I'm thinking that maybe it'll help me stay more conscious of where my wrists are, and I can correct them. I'm thinking something like [this](Evolutionize Medium Stiff Wrist Wraps, 18 Inch - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010116LPU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_sPHFybJZ2AKW1). I don't need help holding the weight, my grip is fine, I just need to stack my wrists more.

I bought my foam puzzle tiles at Walmart or maybe toysrus. Mine are really children's floor mat and have the ABCs on them. I put a towel over them because they are rainbows and I worry about color transfer.

I saw that knitpicks sales them under the title blocking mat. If you search "foam tile" on google, plots of things come up.

I was a former College Strength and Conditioning Coach and we really wanted to ensure we bought high quality bands that would last with heavy daily usage from our athletes. For the big movements like chest pressing, rowing or rotational work we opted for these- http://www.performbetter.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product2_10151_10751_1004162_-1_1000352_1000281_1000281_ProductDisplayErrorView

And for injury prevention care we opted for these- https://www.amazon.com/Black-Mountain-Products-Resistance-Included/dp/B002L6WO5U/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1485556127&sr=8-4&keywords=black+mountain+bands

I hope that helps!

u/sooshie · 3 pointsr/fitness30plus

Three things helped me.

  1. Voodoo Floss and this video
  2. This thingy
  3. Tricep Smash

Numbers 1 and 3 hurt, but after 2 weeks of both of those every day, and wearing the band for support during workouts I haven't had any problems since (knock on wood).
u/taswind · 3 pointsr/migraine

> and she, somewhat condescendingly, said that what she does is too complicated and takes years of training, and is not something I could do at home.

Pardon language, but I call bullshit. (But I can't stand condescending doctors, personally...)

I've had about 10 weeks of PT for migraines and know someone else who has had PT for several months. The other person had said that, other than Botox, PT was the only other thing that worked to decrease migraine severity for her. For me, it felt like I was looser, but my migraines are so bloody variable that I have no idea if it actually did anything.

And we both had daily exercises to bring home between sessions.

One of these exercises was the tennis ball idea, as noted by Lillygrass. (The ball is supposed to go just below the occipital area (approximately where C1/C2 starts in this picture) -- with the 'gap' between the two balls being where your spine rests.)

Most of the rest required a foam roller (example of a foam roller) and a stretchy resistance band (example of resistance band).

According to the 2 PT doctors I saw (my friend and I went to different places, but her exercises seemed similar to mine), they were to strengthen the core and thus take pressure off the muscles in the back/neck. (YMMV, we might not have the same type of migraine.)

u/SaveFerris211 · 3 pointsr/xxfitness

Well, pull ups are a great way to build upper body strength! My favorite yoga instructor has mentioned in the past that it doesn't matter if you can lift a weight bigger than your face, if you can barely lift your legs off the ground :)
Here is a link to the set I bought: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0026PMD70/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_9m7gtb1J8YBKY (sorry for the ugly link, I'm on mobile) these are actually just bands, not loops, because I messed up when I ordered. Oops. But I just tied the ends together and it works fine. And they do stretch A LOT.
If you need additional help at first, loop two of the bands over the bar and hook one leg into each. A little cumbersome, but it works. (Easier to get into if you have a spotter / workout buddy, though.)
Of my $20 set, I did break one band (that was a day for Fail Friday indeed. It was embarrassing.) but they hold up surprisingly well with constant use. I used it for a long time before it broke.
Hope this helps!

I'm looking to start doing more MobilityWod work and I need to purchase a/some band(s). He recommends bands from Rogue Fitness. I'm wondering if bands like this: http://www.amazon.com/Aylio-Fitness-Exercise-Anchor-Medium/dp/B0026PMD70/ would fit the bill? Or is the quality/type of bands from Rogue worth paying more?

u/pumpasaurus · 3 pointsr/bodyweightfitness

The variety pack will be mostly bands far too thick and strong to be good for any of the most frequent uses.

WODFitters Stretch Resistance Pull Up Assist Band with eGuide, #1 Red- 10 to 35 Pounds (1/2 "4.5mm) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IQM3W9K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_k7cDDb55BAD9E

Get the lightest one (orange) for warmups and the lightest stuff, get the next lightest one (red) for Paloffs, face pulls, pull-aparts, arm isolation, etc. You want very low resistance for shoulders so you can do high reps without strain, and you want something that fights back a bit for the actual training work. The red can give a LOT of resistance if you choke up on it or put a lot of starting tension on it.

You don’t need specifically that brand, they’re fairly standard in resistance options and quality, and you can’t really go wrong bc it’s such a simple device.

u/Tiny311 · 3 pointsr/bodybuilding

I've had these for a while and love em. Looks like u/pat0488 recommended them as well

I have this set, which is similar to your first option but slightly more expensive. I think in my research I saw these recommended more often than the Black Mountain ones, so I paid a little extra for them.

I haven't really experienced any problems with them. I don't think they're as good as actual weights, but they cost like 1/4 as much, so I'm happy with my purchase.

u/JungBird · 3 pointsr/homegym

http://www.amazon.com/Barbell-Equipment-12-Piece-Puzzle-2-Inch/dp/B004X165F6

Super cheap, and they're okay. They slide around a bit, and I haven't found a place yet to buy the finishing edges, but it really isn't a problem.

u/UniverseChamp · 3 pointsr/gainit

Here’s what I would recommend for starting home training balancing cost and utility. Obviously, if you afford all of it and have the space, just do that.

1-pullup bar or rings

2-resistance bands

3-dumbbells (shop for used, if possible, if space is tight try these)

4-adjustable bench (same, used benches go for as low as $30)

5-barbell set (time to start deadlifting)

6-power rack (don’t go cheap here)

If you're wet blocking and in need of mats you can also go to a big box store and look for foam exercise mats like these I bought a four set ages ago... You can connect and get the shape or size you need. It was much more convenient to pick them up in store and cheaper than the mats I priced online. Mine are holding up great after about 3 years of use (and I knit almost exclusively lace so they get a work out)

u/kniting_bean · 3 pointsr/knitting

I really love this needle set from amazon for $30 as a beginner set. Then these mats to use for blocking also from amazon for about $20, depending on exactly which set you get, but it’s much less than the marketed blocking mats. Then some rust resistant T-pins from any basic craft store or Walmart. This should cover most of your basics!

u/kmcg103 · 3 pointsr/P90X

I bought 12 of those fairly cheap interlocking floor pads. They aren't as good as the rubbery ones that most gyms have but they are good enough.

u/davey_darling · 3 pointsr/sewing

How about this stuff? A bit thicker than a yoga mat. Not free, but not overly expensive if you were building more than one or two bags.

They are sold at walmart/big box home improvement stores as well.

Ooh, I just thought of something else - go to a carpet store and ask if they have any underlay remnants - there should be something that works perfectly for your needs.

The two shawls I've blocked were blocked on a towel in my mom's home office with the door closed to prevent feline intervention.

When I get back to school on Sunday, I have these waiting for me. I would have rather blocked the shawls on those, but I forgot to check which address Amazon was shipping them to (school vs. home). Oh, well. My dorm room doesn't have carpet, so it all works out.

Do you think elbow sleeves are better than elbow brace for elbow tendinitis?

u/__thisismyaccount__ · 3 pointsr/Fitness

Hi there. I broke my wrist 3 years ago. I tried bench press last week it really hurts now (felt ok at the time). Not totally sure if it's from the break but my other wrist is fine ... Has anyone had experience with bench press after a broken wrist? Is it probably just bad form? Should I be strengthening my wrist (and if so how)? Should I be using something like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B010116LPU ? Thanks in advance.

u/OMGitisCrabMan · 3 pointsr/gainit

This is what I have.

And these.

I bought them all in one set about 5 years ago. I love them. These are better than mine, mine don't have the weight identifiers on them.

u/Ballmeat · 2 pointsr/Vive

Buy these and shape your play area around them. I have linoleum laminated floors and they are pretty shiny, doesn't really interfere with tracking.

u/dtrjr · 2 pointsr/oculus

During the CB demo it was noticeable but appreciated because you are walking around on four of these mats for the first time.

I was moving around quite a bit so I wanted to recenter myself during the transitions and not smash my face into a wall or the staff. So yes, a light leak option can be great for certain meatspace moments.

u/Ukhai · 2 pointsr/Fitness

lifting straps. like these

u/invertap · 2 pointsr/drums

I had this issue as well (neighbors came a-knocking at 10pm to tell me to shut up). I never played a night again but I bought a set of 4 of these. I'm not sure how much they help, but I felt that not only the pedals transferred noise, but hitting the pads on the frame would get transmitted through the legs.

u/Jekyllhyde · 2 pointsr/bodyweightfitness

I use the Jungle Gym. I find it way better than TRX since it is two separate straps and can be adjusted to any height and width. I am also considering rings, but I can do all the dip type exercises with JG.

u/Vaztes · 2 pointsr/Fitness

You want some thicker ones. These are generally used for weightlifting and such. The red one is a good start for shoulder prehab movements.

It doesn't need to be this brand, but this type of band is the best for your purpose.

u/lpbman · 2 pointsr/BuildaCarAVForMe

I am sure this will be downvoted... But I've installed cheap as hell eva foam floor mat with nice results. Budget and time ruled the day for this... there would be no waiting for stuff to come in over the internet. Just a trip to Aldi where I'd seen these things on sale for $10. It worked pretty well considering it was just stuffing foam under carpet.

25% cld and then Noico foam pad , 50 mil mlv covering the entire floor will bring the noise floor down. Sealing doors is important and can be done with just mlv in a pinch, but plywood or plastic works best to fill the gaps in the sheet metal.

u/thegoodwife · 2 pointsr/tifu

$24 to maintain neighborly relations and or peace and quiet may be worth it for you.

u/ccecil · 2 pointsr/bodybuilding

Here's a couple ideas that have worked for me in the past:

  • Perform exercises which place particularly high levels of stress on the elbows on an every-other-workout basis (think preacher curls, reverse-grip anything)

  • Try sleeping with an elbow splint to keep the arm straight at night. This helps to relax the ulner nerve.

  • Try using the BandIT Therapeutic Arm Band, especially while sleeping.

    Hope some of this helps.

Yeah, ok, Tacfit sounds good since your goals are: 1) to move better, 2) to support your parkour practice.

You're probably already past this point, but I'd like to mention that CC is not good for building strength. The progression requirements (e.g. 2x20 uneven pushups) are unnecessarily high. I would work with lower reps (5x5, and if possible, microload), which is probably my only regret doing CC.

Regarding how to combine it all, well, the bodyweight Tacfit programs involve a LOT of pushing. You might want to get 'Tacfit ROPE' and combine that with /u/Antranik's [bedsheet method] (https://www.reddit.com/r/bodyweightfitness/comments/5nd91p/rows_are_an_excellent_exercise_for_improving_your/) or the semi-portable jungle gym. When I did a modified version of Tacfit Warrior, I always substituted in Double Rows (Tabletop rows) for shoulder balance.

I think the best way to integrate it is to decide two things:

  1. 4 day wave or 7 day wave? 4 Day wave would be: No - Low - Med (OG) - High (Tacfit)

  2. If 7 Day wave, is Tacfit or gymnastic strength more important?

    If gymnastic strength, probably:
No - Low - Med (OG) - No - Low - Med (OG) - High (Tacfit)

    If Tacfit, probably:
No - Low - Med (Tacfit) - No - Low - Med (OG) - High (Tacfit)

As you should expect, cocktailing the training programs will lead to slower progression in both.

Why I changed over to purely OG was because strength takes a lot of time to develop (6-24 months?). Muscular endurance and cardio take less time (I think 2-4 months), so I decided to make space in my schedule for OG and if I ever need to build back my cardio again, I'll swap in a training cycle of Tacfit.

I would suggest EVA foam. It is easy to work with and CHEAP. You can often find it at hardware stores as workshop flooring. Harbor Freight sells them in packs of 4 big tiles for $10...which is more than enough to make a large sword. I love Harbor Freight for cheap hardware stuff... check them out if you have one around.

Basically, this stuff;

http://www.amazon.com/We-Sell-Mats-Anti-Fatigue-Interlocking/dp/B001EJI6CK/ref=pd_sxp_grid_i_0_1

It is easy to cut into desired shapes. You will probably want to add some sort of boning for support (wooden dowels, bent coat hangers, whatever). Judging from the Zabuza sword you want to make, you might need more of a mop handle support.

Before painting it, you will want to seal it. This is best done first with heat to melt a lot of the foam cells on the surface closed. I used a cheap heat gun I got for $15... its like an industrial hair dryer. A hair dryer would probably work to if its hot enough at close range. A very quick brush with a blow torch has been used for this purposed. You want to hit it just enough to make it a little shiny... not deform the top. I suggest cutting out a small tile to test with first.

After the melt sealing, I suggest going over it with Modge Podge craft glue (from any hobby shop... Hobby Lobby, Michaels, ect). Once that dries, you can prime and paint!

There is a useful EVA foam tutorial series that you might want to look at,

Best of luck! I'm having a blast working on my DragonCon costume now. I'm doing an armored version of Captain Harlock from the old Galaxy Express animes.

First thing that comes to mind is getting a pull up bar (especially one like the this one with multiple grips): http://www.amazon.com/Iron-Total-Upper-Body-Workout/dp/B001ND04U4

Between chin ups and multiple arm position pullups (and dips using a chair), you'll hit the majority of your upper body. You can even use your back pack to increase the weight.

Also, have you checked out the side bar at /r/bodyweightfitness ?

You can also get a resistance band set that would allow you to workout your chest standing up. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Bodylastics-Resistance-components-membership-LIVEEXERCISE/dp/B006O09M4K (very versatile and affordable).

I've used bands for one purpose or another ever since 1996 and not only have I never had this happen to me, I've never heard of it. I'm sure that if you look hard enough, you'll find someone it's happened to, but the instances are few and far between - particularly if you use bands from a reputable company.

For the record, these days I like these. To my knowledge, you can't beat the price/quality ratio.

These are what I use, and what was mentioned in the warm up video description I believe.

I almost bought the rope that /u/saygoodbye_tothese recommended today, actually.

I went with this one instead because it got equally good reviews and it's half the price. Can't speak to it personally though, since I just ordered it a couple hours ago!

For acrylic:

I lay it out on an ironing board and steam block with an iron. I usually just steam, holding the iron about an inch over the FO. Sometimes I put a damp towel over the FO and lightly touch the iron to the surface.

Typically the 6-7mm EVA foam is referring to those interlocking floor mats. These can be found at hardware stores like Home Depot or Lowes for pretty cheap. They typically will have a textured side and smooth side.

u/lookalive07 · 1 pointr/P90X

If you want to use bands (which are good if you don't have much room for weights), I recommend these: Bodylastics full kit

This includes a door anchor, so you can work on pull ups without a pull-up bar. In the videos you'll see one person typically modify the pull-ups with a band, so this is helpful to get the form and some of the strength if you're unable to do pull-ups right off the bat.

Other than that, I'd suggest a good Yoga mat, and a Yoga block can help you get the moves down.

Good luck!

The rest is just using assistive technology to limit physical computer use.

E.g. speech recognition, contact-less controls, eye tracking.

Speech recognition

I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

Free speech recognition is also coming to Google Docs.

For dictation, I see Google dictation recognition recognize some of the most obscure terms that I try to throw at it.

I suppose that free speech recognition on the leading search engine, and without needing a powerful local processor = more users to submit their voice samples, and correction data.

Contact-less controls:

Touch+ (formerly known as the Haptix KickStarter) just started shipping, and you can turn any surface, including your keyboard, into a 3-D, virtual, multitouch surface.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_bo1m7kXgQ

Touch (on a virtual element, or the keyboard) can be faster than the mouse - Jump VNC Android app

Any time that you can use touch (on a virtual element, or the keyboard) instead of the mouse, you can work faster.

I sometimes use the Jump VNC Android app to make my Nexus 10 as the keyboard, and remote into my desktop computer.

Therefore, I have a tiny bit of experience with interacting with my desktop from a touch interface because of using a VNC program.

As you can imagine, interacting can be more difficult because the Nexus 10 screen size is relatively small, and I’m using touch to indirectly touch a desktop that has a non-touch UI.

However, when you are able to touch, it’s faster than using a mouse.

Eye tracking:

https://theeyetribe.com/

An external Eye Tribe eye-tracker costs $99, but smartphones, tablets, notebooks, and laptops already have built-in cameras.

If manufacturers make some small modifications, such as adding an upgraded sensor, enabling eye-tracking is supposed to only add $5 to the manufacturing costs.

E.g. Eye-tracking (for initial warping/teleporting of cursor, and large cursor movements) + game controller (for precise cursor movements, finishing with an accurate placement, and clicking

In the eye-tracking subreddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/EyeTracking), there’s a video of a redditor controlling the desktop, and surfing Reddit with an eye tracker and a game controller (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IjTZcbXYQY).

Eye gaze is for initial, instant, and possibly large cursor movements, and then the joystick of the controller overrides the gaze-control to offer an accurate selection of the target.

The controller buttons are for clicking.

---
E.g. Eye-tracking pointer motion teleport + mouse: eye-tracking for initial warping/teleporting of cursor, then use precision of mouse to finish selection – research paper on benefits of initially warping cursor

Similar to the game controller example, eye tracking can be used to initially teleport a mouse-controlled cursor near an intended target.

Once there, the mouse can override eye-control when precision is needed.

A paper called “Mouse and Keyboard Cursor Warping to Accelerate and Reduce the Effort of Routine HCI Input Tasks” evaluates how initially teleporting the cursor with eye tracking in other common human computer interaction can affect the interaction.

The authors have a video demonstration.

A segment of the video has a task that requires the user to click “click-me” buttons that are generated in random locations as fast as possible.

A competition pits a mouse vs. an eye tracker + mouse.

You can see the performance of the eye-tracking warping + mouse at 2:41 of the video: http://youtu.be/7BhqRsIlROA?t=2m41s.

“Mouse control + eye-tracking teleport” ends up being the clear winner.

---

It’s not “mouse + keyboard” vs. “eye tracker + keyboard”– it’s “mouse + eye-tracking teleport + keyboard” or “eye tracker + keyboard” – that is, eye-tracking is always there

Eye-tracking +keyboard: Eye-Tracking doesn’t have the precision of a mouse, but if an interface element and hit state is large enough, a “click-where-I’m-looking at” keyboard button will work.

Eye tracking two-step-selection process + keyboard : there are eye tracking features that allow an eye controlled cursor to snap, zoom, etc. to a smaller target element, or make smaller elements project into large elements.

Sometimes it’s a two-step process, so even if you have the ability to instantly teleport the cursor, “both-hands-on-keyboard + eye-tracking two-step process” may not be suitable in certain situations.

Eye tracking teleport + mouse and keyboard: However, whenever you need the mouse, eye-tracking will still be there to provide an initial cursor teleport.

Without eye-tracking: If you have both hands on the keyboard, you lose time switching one hand to the mouse, and bringing the hand back to the keyboard.

You’re usually choosing between both hands on the keyboard, or one hand on the mouse.

With eye-tracking: With eye tracking, it can be used either with both hands on the keyboard (click-what-I’m-looking-at keyboard button), or one on the mouse (initial cursor teleport, then use the mouse).

You never have to forgo something to use eye-tracking; it’s always ready to make normal computer interaction faster.

Autologous Tenocyte Injection - take tendon cells from healthy area, grow the tendon cells, and inject them into injured area

> A paper on using autologous tenocyte injection for the treatment of severe, chronic resistant lateral epicondylitis was published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine on September 2013.
>
> A patellar tendon needle biopsy was performed under local anesthetic, and tendon cells were expanded by in vitro culture.

Tenocytes used for the injection were characterized by flow cytometry (sort and purify) and real-time polymerase chain reaction (amplify).

> Autologous tenocytes were injected into the site of tendinopathy identified at the origin of the extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon under ultrasound guidance on a single occasion.
>
> In this study, patients with chronic LE who had previously undergone an unsuccessful full course of nonoperative treatment showed significantly improved clinical function and structural repair at the origin of the common extensor tendon after ATI. (2)

Pau Gasol of the Los Angeles Lakers has tendinosis (chronic tendinitis) in knees - receives stem cell injections

Pau Gasol did a stem cell treatment for his patellar tendinosis.

>Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol underwent a procedure Thursday to address the tendinosis in both of his knees.

>The procedure, known as the FAST (Focused Aspiration of Scar Tissue) technique, involves a probe being inserted into the knee that "directs ultrasonic energy to eliminate scar tissue without damaging healthy tissue," according to a team release.

>“Gasol also will receive stem cell injections next week and is expected to make a full recovery, the Lakers said.”.

>
>"It's more than tendinitis, it's tendinosis," Gasol said. "There's a degeneration of the tissue, and it's something that I've dealt with all year. So I'll have to do something to regenerate the tissue so I don't have to play with this pain.".

Allogenic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ALLO-ASC) - stem cells from fat

> As of November 2013, researchers at the Seoul National University Hospital will be looking to recruit participants into a clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of allogenic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ALLO-ASC) in treatment of a tendon injury (symptom duration is over six months).

> ALLO-ASC will be administrated to the patients with lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) by ultrasonographic guided injection. (1)

As I understand, this involves adult stem cells from fat.

Race horses, and iPSCs for horse tendon injuries

I think that they are experimenting, and have experimented with induced pluripotent stem cells with race horses. (3)

They get something called “bowed tendon”, which is their name for tendinosis.

Here's an easy one for you.

I was a gymnast so i have plenty of them lying around.. but if you can find a pair of old Velcro grips for High Bar or rings. Simply cut off the part that goes over your hand/palm so all that's left is the wrist part. Just keep those tight around your wrists when you're doing handstands etc. I have terrible wrists from years of pommels and pbars.. this is pretty much the only way I can get a full workout in, otherwise my wrists kill me within 10 minutes of starting a workout.

If you can't get any of those, just buy a pair of these.. http://www.amazon.com/Grizzly-Fitness-Power-Training-Wrist/dp/B0030FY0GM/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1405536776&sr=8-7&keywords=wrist+support or something similar.

I've responded elsewhere in this thread but I feel the need to repost some Highly Recommended advice.

I'm 32. Constant pain has become a part of life.

A decade of ice hockey, lacrosse, and construction work caught up to me at 27. More than the sports, I miss the little things, like being able to jump down a whole flight of stairs. Now I go one step at a time and use the handrail.

If you have health insurance, see a physical therapist. A few sessions will teach you enough to be able to help yourself for the rest of your life. If you don't have insurance, look up some physical therapy stretches on youtube.

I stretch every morning with elastic resistance bands. They have been invaluable for stretching injured joints. You can get a set of 3 different resistances for $12 on amazon or at a sporting goods store. I still have back pain but my shoulders, knees, etc. are much less problematic now.

Edit: added link to resistance bands

I notice /u/Antranik often uses a yoga mat, and when I do them (especially side plank) on my carpet, or hardwood floor, my feet and hands can end up hurting quite a bit (yes, I'm bony :))

I focus a lot on proper form (since I'm a beginner and want to avoid bad habits), so I'm also considering it might be due to bad form, or just plain weakness since I'm significantly worse at side plank than the rest of the exercises (20s compared to 40-50s).

If you have to work 16 hours a day, then there is probably nothing you can do. But if you have a normal 8/9 hour workday most of the time, then you can do it!

Personally, I need to exercise first thing in the morning. Too many variables exist in the evening that prevents working out consistently.

I bought a basic stationary bike. Cheaper than an annual gym membership. It doesn't take up much space (I had mine in a 550 sq/ft apartment) and reduces the 10+ minutes it takes to go to a gym (one less barrier to exercising). You have no excuse not to find 30 minutes in your day for moderately intense biking. I watch my T.V. on the bike (efficient!).

If you want to add some basic resistance training, I do resistance bands. The same thing as the bike, you can do it at home and it takes up no space and costs way less than the gym.

Making the habit is key. Being able to work out at home and doing so first thing in the morning were the two changes I made that let me work out regularly with a 50 hour a week schedule while maintaining a balanced quality of life.

Thanks for this idea! I was trying to figure out what I was gonna do once I brought my squat rack and weights back home. I have a ton of room but I have tile flooring... You think this would work if I doubled up on them? It's foam :- \

u/christmas_sweater · 1 pointr/bodyweightfitness

First of all, this is extremely common. Welcome to the club! I first got tendonitis after about 8 years of regular strength training. It's just not a problem that you can resolve through exercise/getting stronger. Like a muscle, you damage your tendons through wear and tear. However, they generally receive less blood flow than muscles and heal slower as a result. This allows them to worsen over time until you develop tendonitis. Recovery is usually easy, but it's a pain in the ass if you love to work out. I sympathize with you there. All you can do is RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). That's probably a good order for importance. Rest is absolutely necessary and the other three will aid and speed the recovery process. In addition, anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen will help.

This compression band has worked well for me. I recommend wearing that band (or any band) when you resume training, at least for a little while.

If the condition does not start to heal, please do take cblupo's advice and see a doctor.

u/threedeemelodie · 1 pointr/yoga

Why not look into getting something like: Foam Interlocking Tiles. I think they are much more dense than mats which are designed to be rolled up and carried around. But if you are just using it at home, it might be more comfortable than a yoga or pilates mat. Or look at gym/fitness mats.

Unless you are really forceful on the mats during some movements like "burpees, mountain climbers, V-push-ups" (from an Amazon question) they should stay together. You can even lay your current yoga mat on top of this if you want, I guess.

According to some reviews, they are not as squishy-soft as the stuff in kids' playrooms. You may be able to find it in a fitness/sports store like Sports Chalet or Big 5 if you want to see in person.

u/onceamennonite · 1 pointr/Bowling

If you do try to "play through" the pain, it's a good idea to wear a forearm brace to protect the tendon. This is the type I use. I had a pretty severe case of tennis elbow that forced me to bowl left-handed for a year and am mostly recovered now. With the brace on while bowling, I'm confident that I'm not about to hurt it again.

Have you fixed your 10-pin shooting, do you think? When the cause of the tendonitis goes away, the pain will probably go away too -- but sometimes that happens maddeningly slowly.

Do your pulling before your pushing. It makes pushing much less taxing on your shoulders i've found. So that means do your rows before you OHP and bench. Personally, I like to do pull ups or chin ups on my OHP day because the pulling and pressing are both on the same plane (vertical), but I don't think its necessary. I like these bands.

u/tigerselkie · 1 pointr/xxfitness

I bring these to the gym with me, and not that I've tried to do anything too crazy with them, but they seem to hold up reasonably well to cross-band walks and things like that.

u/Tofinochris · 1 pointr/homegym

Here's the details on the stuff:

Power Rack. Had this about 6 weeks and I'm extremely happy with it. Looks fine, feels very sturdy, no feeling of tipping or instability even when I hang from the bar at front. Paint scratches when you move and insert the spotter bars but what do you want for $350 shipped. It's held 215 on multiple occasions with no issues. If you lift significantly heavier than this (300+) you may want to read reviews first, or invest in a less-starter rack, but for many/most people this will be fine forever. It's dead easy to assemble if you have a socket set and if you don't, great opportunity to get one, they're cheap! Assembly can be done mostly solo but the final bits really need a second person to hold stuff in place while bolts are inserted. Rack comes shipped in 2 or 3 (can't remember) boxes which are pretty unwieldy and heavy.

I went with this CAP barbell. This suits my needs very well with great knurling and came without bend, and I'm unlikely to put a bend in it with my sub-300 deadlifts. The barbell ships in a fun 7 foot cylindrical tube which caused the dude at the mail place to nearly topple over because he expected it to be light for some reason.

I also got this plate tree which holds 2x 45# bumpers, 2x 45# plates, and 2x 25#, 2x 10#, 4x 5#, and 2x 2.5#. Does the trick but paint scratches off the pegs like crazy but is easily cleaned up. Single box, about 30 pounds.

The bench is this one by Marcy. I wanted a simple bench and that's what I got. Great bench for the price and I haven't had any instability problems. Had this for a year and used up to 70# dumbbells and 215# barbell with it (I'm 215). Most weight total that's been on it was a 270# friend benching 185# for sets and he found it fine.

Assorted stuff: got these puzzle mats which do the trick for the right price and are stowable unlike a permanent mat. As I mentioned elsewhere the 45# bumpers are meant to mitigate any floor impact, and I'm not terribly concerned with keeping this floor perfect anyway (it's 10 year old laminate on top of concrete, and the "path" is linoleum). The plates were from a sale at the local FitnessDerp store (not its real name) and were 85 cents a pound -- I never saw any on Craigslist for less than that in the month I looked. Finally just some collars.

The cat in the picture highly recommends this crinkle tunnel.

u/CarlWheezer · 1 pointr/bonnaroo

I bought a few of these to use this year.

u/kodezero911 · 1 pointr/Fitness

I have golfers elbow from hockey injury for a past 1.5 years. I recommend this brace http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000FML7SW/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1421000636&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SY200_QL40

It will provide great support, but do not wear it all the time it will cause muscle atrophy.

Make sure to do stretching and exercises, use brace when needed.

u/Frank_Caswole · 1 pointr/bodybuilding

Fyi These are the ones I picked up

If your wrists are smaller than 7", I would go with something else. The pad hits itself wrapping around my wrist when I use them. You have to use them to understand. Ones without pads should fit anyone.

u/cydonian_knight · 1 pointr/nSuns

I bought the red band last year. The resistance is perfect for pull aparts and shoulder dislocations.

Do you have double under's?

Rogue SR-1 is a common rope I see recommended on here I believe.

I learned DU's on this rope ($10):

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LGXE5NS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My box also sells these rogue ropes for $10/each:

http://www.roguefitness.com/rogue-speed-rope-10-pack

both ropes worked really well, so in terms of bang for buck, @$10/each I think that's a pretty good bang/buck. I now currently use an RPM speed rope 3.0 it's a great rope but I wouldn't say has as much bang/buck as the lower price ones.

Maybe take this as an opportunity to work on your upper body strength. Pull-ups are the obvious exercise of choice, as well as resistance band backward rows (or even better with a cable if you have access to one a machine).

If pull-ups are difficult for you, start by maxing out on negatives until you can eventually do a full pull-up. There are lots of videos on YouTube with information on pull-ups.

Regarding resistance band exercises, buy a few resistance bands from eBay, they're very cheap. Just the red one and the black ones will do (the two with the least resistance).

These ones are the best from my experience

Loop them around a post an do some seated rows.

Core exercises are of course important too. Avood crunches and anything involving spinal flexion. Hanging leg raises, planks, exercise ball rollouts and (if you can), dead bugs are all good exercises.

Best of luck, hope the toe heals up soon!

Hey guys, thank you both for your suggestions! Decided to go with the gym mat one, and this arrived today:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GNLKZ28/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
(I had found a shorter one- the longer size was for being able to have some mat between two adjacent desks.)
It had a couple spots of damage upon arrival, but for the price, and the spots where they are, I think I'll tolerate it/not do the return.
Anyway, it's working like a charm, no more unintentional rolling! I can't just push easily and roll, of course, I have to get up a little bit and push to move away, but it's very worth it so far.
Edit: line breaks

Having lots of issues with this as well. I am pretty sure my problem is poor ergonomics at work (bad keyboard/mouse position) as well as softball season. Hoping to alleviate this by getting a trackball and positioning it and keyboard better.

And yes working out with this is a pain. I have issues with pull upos, squats, bench and others when I am having my pain. I just got one of these which seems to help during a workout a bit, but its a bandaid not a problem solver.

I've dealt with pain in my elbows, forearms, and wrists for a while. They seem to all be linked. I've found that three things really help:

  1. Grip work
  2. Soft tissue treatment for forearm pain
  3. Wrist wraps for exercises that don't involve bicep supination but can strain wrists. I've also used elbow wraps at times. Wraps increase blood flow and can even aid in recovery after training.

I have had a pair of these in daily use for over a year and I love them. I have backup pairs in case. They are stiff and actually keep my wrist in place. Also super quick to put on and take off because of the Velcro loop. I despise the elastic fabric wraps, they do nothing for me.
