Unlike many of the cheaper faceshields this one has a full wrap around frame to support the faceshield around the entire perimeter. Too many cheap ones only have a frame at the top of the head and the rest of the shield is unsupported and likely won’t do much to deflect a blow.

I'm going to assume you already have safety glasses. Make sure to use both; the face shield is not intended to be a replacement for safety glasses.

Once you have all of that...save more money! Depending on what you like to turn, you've got plenty more that you're going to want to buy:

General Accessories: Live center & jacob's chuck for your tailstock. A good light that you can reposition as needed. Some sort of rack to keep your chisels close at hand (you can make this if you have the tools to do so). Grinding supplies (grinder, grinding jig/accessories, slip stones/strops, aluminum oxide grinding wheel - assuming you're using a standard dry grinder). A smock (trust me on this one).

Pen Turning: Pen mill, drill bits (keep in mind most pen kits use metric sizes), pen mandrel, different sized bushings (assuming you want to turn different pen styles), pen press for assembly purposes.

Bowl/Vessel Turning: 4-jaw chuck (these can get pricey; there's some on the market that cost more than your Rikon lathe), additional jaws for your 4-jaw chuck, specialty turning tools (bowl gouges, hollowing tools), and many more things that start to get handy as you work on larger projects.

Turning's a fun hobby, but like any hobby worth a damn, it's not cheap. :)

Edit: One thing I haven't seen mentioned is looking for a used lathe. Modern ones tend to get snapped up pretty quickly on Craigslist, but if you can get lucky enough to come across one, you might save yourself some cash.

Edit: Depending on where you are in the world, this is still probably sold, but under different brands. Honeywell is the parent company I believe, so its sold under 'Uvex', 'Sperian', 'Honeywell' and probably others. If you're in Australia, RSEA have these shields, though you may have to special order the non-fog coating.

This is the one I own, and it's great. I took it off about 90 seconds before this happened because it was fogging up and I thought "eh, it'll be fine. Not like this is gonna come flying out of the chuck..."

It looks like you're using a hand stamp instead of a press stamp with that hydraulic press; you're probably fine to do so since the stamp is so large, but I would highly encourage you to pick up one of these face shields if you don't already have one, it may just save your ass.

I learned the hard way when I was using my 20 ton press with a long hand stamp, and the stamp came down at a bit of an angle and shot out at my face with 20 tons of force, hitting me right above the eye and cause an instant knot on my face nearly the size of a golf ball. I honestly thought the silver was stuck in my eyebrow the knot was so big. The left side of my face turned all sorts of fantastic shades of blues, blacks, and purple over the next couple weeks. If that stamp had been a half inch or so lower I honestly believe I would have been blinded in one eye.

Just a cautionary tale and word of warning, PLEASE spend the $20 and always wear full face protection when operating machinery like a hydraulic press.

I cheated on the visor a bit. It’s more apparent from a side view but it’s not flush with the front of the helmet. What I did was I bought a tinted face shield off Amazon (link), cut it to size with a pair of scissors, the hot glued it in from the inside of the helmet.

Oh...yeah you won’t need a 3D printer for those. The only 3D printed part on mine is the bridge of the nose to hold magnets that I use to attach them. Make a template out of paper that is sized to your head and the right shape you want, and then cut that template (all as one piece) out of the material that I link below. The material is thin enough that you can use scissors to cut it.

Mine are held onto the face shell with magnets, but you can just as easily attach them to some existing glasses or goggles by using hot glue and/or fishing line along the bridge of the nose. Don’t use Super Glue because it will cloud the lense.

It might also be worth it to you to search for Cat Eye Sunglasses. Those are the style that most-realistically matches the Rebis lenses, and if you see some you like, then there’s no building to do. I wanted mine to be larger and they’re more based on their look in Way’s run, but I think if I wanted more of a Morrison/Case run appearance, I’d go with cat eye sunglasses.

A few more tips for bio cleaning:

0. Gloves, mask, eye protection. Apron if you have one. Personally, I use a full facial shield (for no other reason than I happened to own one, hehe).

1. I don't put cleaning solution into water tank, just hot tap water to the top mark.
   
2. Use a pump sprayer to saturate bio mess with Simple Green (spot check on your upholstery in advance to make sure it won't ruin it).
   
3. Liberally spray Lysol air sanitizer in a salon of your car and close the doors.
   
4. Wait 10-15 minutes.
   
5. Use a spot cleaner to remove the mess, using 3-8" strokes.
   
6. First stroke is a non-contact pass to spray hot water (pull that trigger); then you vacuum up this same spot until no more liquid is seeing coming up the hose.
   
7. Repeat until clean.
   
8. Spray some Lysol air sanitizer again; you can even spray it directly on upholstery (spot check first, of course).
   
9. Leave the doors or windows open until acceptably dry.

Super easy. This face shield is flexible. Can be cut with a pair of scissors and looks perfect.

Not too sure about the Pro, I’ve got an original. I bought one of these, took about an hour to take it apart, clean it, and put it back together again.

I’ll give you specific recommendations. About $20. A comfortable headgear with a pivot back thing. I’d recommend the steel wire mesh because it’s very rare that you need to replace it because it doesn’t get scratched up. Also, it feels like there isn’t something in front of your face. I hate breathing in my warm breath that bounces back to me. It’s not great for fine dust but should work for you. Wear safety glasses behind it.

I have the S8510 and I do think the extra for the hardcoat/antifog is worth it. Compared to others I've used, it is much less prone to getting scratched and fogging up.

Safety glasses and a big face shield are critical. If I'm grinding a lot or grinding ANY thoriated TIG electrode I'll add a respirator with the pink P100 filter cartridges. Don't forget hearing protection! If you wear earmuffs then behind the neck ones like these will fit with all the other gear.

It's worth it's weight in gold; at least once a month it stops a big chunk from getting me in the neck or face. This one's been serving me well.

It was a bench grinder (same difference) and I got lucky. It was under the eyelid for a few dozen seconds minutes and worked it's way out. There was a small corneal scratch that healed completely and quickly, albeit painfully; I was lucky. I was wearing prescription glasses at the time and the stray wire ninja-ed around them. I roll with one of these now. They're light, cool and comfortable.

I did a SWTOR version of Darth Revan for Comic Con in 2015,here's the mask I did. it looks a bit different from the KOTOR version, but it's the same general look. I used a replacement lens for a plasma cutting face shield Like this one. I cut it with a tin snips and secured it by fitting the strip in between the layers of the mask before riveting them together. Since it's plastic, though, most glues would probably work too.

You might think about using a face shield like I use for wood working and then adapting that, it is a super lightweight plastic head band with a big clear shield you can flip up and down to cover your face. Might be a little big or clunky but you could cut it down a lot and it would provide a functional frame to decorate off of. I wear one for 6-8hrs at a time without any discomfort. Then you would even be able to flip the mask up out of the way for drinks or if you get too hot!

I use a trend pro sheild, a bit pricey but it's the best way to go. The cheapest solution is to get some anti fog spray for your glasses. I use Scott brand for my motorcycle goggles and glasses, work pretty good.

I used a face shield replacement sheet. It's thin enough to cut with scissors and you can get it in clear or tinted. The one I got was tinted and used it for a Power Rangers helmet.

So about a month and a half ago I was working on my Lathe (mini wood lathe) when I had an immediate machine failure. The chuck quickly lost its grip and tail stock center started to dig into the wood and slowly travel from the center of the wood outwards. After only about 2 seconds of being on the machine, the 5x5x16 chunk of bloodwood came hurdling off of the machine. It flew straight through the 1" steel tool rest and continued flying. It flew straight into my face with insane force. Had it not been for my full 3m face shield this one I would be dead. It hit the shield with enough force to tear through it, but the mask is curved so it managed to deflect 95% of force.

I will never just wear goggles again. I'm glad I decided it was a mask day. I use my lathe and other dangerous tools with much care, but things still will happen.

so there is the trend air shield that several of my local area turners and woodworkers swear by. I have it on the chistmas / birthday wish list this year.

A safety mask like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Chemical-Splash-Safety-Mask-Shield/dp/B001UHC0HI covered in a few layers of sheer black fabric can conceal your face well. Put the fake neck on top of it and wear a hooded robe with an open V neck where your actual face is.

The mask can fog up, and if you're wearing it in a dark place you'll want less fabric than if you were wearing it in full daylight.

It is a really comfortable mask that directs your breath downward. I promise once you wear this you will never want to put on a shitty disposable dusk mask again.

You should really wear a face shield as well when cutting. I finally got around to buying one and the first week I was wearing it I had a 3 inch cutoff wheel explode and half the disk hit the shield (right in front of my nose/ mouth) and then bounced off the work bench and hit the opposite wall of the shop about 30 feet away. I'm pretty sure it would have fucked my face up permanently.

People scoff at you when you mention wearing PPE. But you don't realize how much more comfortable you are when using the proper gear to do the work.

Lastly, I throw on my boots and pants.

I remember the days of firing up the trimmer and flinging dirt and rocks everywhere in flip flops and shorts. My younger days weren't brighter days.

It's probably not profitable to sell the cardboard glasses individually online. Waiting until the last minute seriously cuts your options.

Respirator- A simple dust mask is all that is really needed most of the time unless you're sanding exotic hardwoods or applying finish with harmful solvent vapors. These 3M 8511's are decent and comfortable (and what I use most of the time).

Ear plugs- Find a local Audiologist and have a set of custom earplugs made. They'll cost you a bit (The ones I had made were about 75$ per set) but they will be perfectly formed to your ears and you won't even feel them in place. Comfortable ear plugs are the ones that will be worn often. Where them whenever you're working in the shop.

Glasses- Go to a local Shopko or anywhere that sells glasses and find a pair that fit well, are comfortable on the ears and nose. Like ear plugs, the comfortable pair of safety glasses are the ones that will be worn and not left sitting on the bench. Where them! If you are doing fine sanding pick up a clear face shield and where that in addition to your glasses. This will stop 99% of flying dust from getting to your eyes.

I've not found a time I need to be wearing tight fitting goggles but I do have a good set in the shop just in case. I do where a pair once in awhile while on the job if I'm working with drywall or doing heavy demo work. It's not convenient to wear a full face shield sometimes and the goggles fill the need well. I found mine at a local Fastenal store, they have a decent selection of glasses too. If you don't have a Fastenal nearby, look for Grainger or any industrial or commercial contractor supply/rental store. They'll have a great selection to choose from.

How would these 65 dollar chisels compare? This 80 dollar set? I don't see much of a difference between those two, and I'd also like to know how those compare to the ones youve linked above.

I totally agree! I only just started turning this month and within the first week my nose started bleeding like crazy from all the sawdust. I just bought the GVS Elipse from Amazon for $20 and I am soooo thankful I did. With that and the Honeywell face shield for another $20, I can turn all day without any issues. It feels like I'm breathing in clean cool air. It's awesome. VERY MUCH recommended.

Anyone recommend one of these? There's also the 8510 that's a few dollars more but I don't know what the difference is.

No man...only the launch Pro may be louder. Later 7100 and 7200 models won’t. Both launch models are the loudest models and especially the 1000 series with the Delta fans.
