I built one of these, though admittedly much smaller, and a cheap intrex pool pump was fine.

Edit: this one, and they sometimes have used 500 or 1000 GPH versions, but those may be too strong unless your building a tank to fill and letting gravity feed the sleuce.

I got that setup off amazon for 175$

Rooting makes no difference in sand AFAIK

100% Pool Filter Sand, here's an amazon link to what most people get, but here's what I used.

From what I've seen, fish like sand better, even if they're the type that vaccum feed, they can rid sand from their mouths easier than gravel. Not to mention, they don't have to keep shoving their mouths into the gravel, because the food will just sit on top, instead of a crevice.

Sand for sure. Easier to vacuum too, just hover over.

You're welcome! Ours is a waffle maker whereas what you've linked is a deep fill sandwich maker. You really need to get a waffle maker so that the mixture is spread thinly. A deep fill sandwich maker would have a very different result.

I have this pump wrapped in poly-fil and placed in a milk-crate. All i hear is form the water fall. As for the fish, they don't seem to mind and actually swim around the milk crate and eat algae off the filter media as its running.

Here is a picture to give an idea. https://imgur.com/ZOyEMH2

if your pool is Intex, you might want to try a sand filter. This might work for you. its not the same flow rate, but should be plenty for a 750-800 gallon pond. https://www.amazon.com/Intex-Krystal-Filter-16-inch-110-120V/dp/B00GSPHSWO/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=Intex%2Bsand%2Bfilter&qid=1574190697&sr=8-5&th=1

Guessing this would be the better one you are describing?

https://www.amazon.com/Pentair-188592-Cartridge-Filter-Square/dp/B004VU8UHK/ref=sr_1_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1495660373&sr=1-1&keywords=pentair+quad+de+filter

I looked on Pentair's main site and didn't see a direct reference to a FNS without a plus on it.

Teflon and silicone is what I use every day. 4 wraps or so of Teflon with a bead of silicone around the base (where the threads first touch the pump) of the fitting.

I wouldn't use white PVC on the pump fitting though, it's more prone to heat damage/warping. You want to use gray cpvc for at least a few inches. Even better would be a threaded Union like this 2" one or like this 1.5" one. The union gives you a way to break apart the plumbing later on for future repairs without having to cut it apart. Those unions are hi-temp rated to help prevent heat warping.

This TR-100 is the new iteration of the tried and true Pac-Fab bobbin wound filter design, so yes... this is a good filter.

I'm not a fan of the Pentair 261050 2-Inch HiFlow Valve because I recall some odd problem they had with it (may be remedied by now) AND that it has an unusual plumbing configuration - but those two things aside, it does allow a higher flow due to it's improved interior design.

The tried and true (multiport) valve is the Pentair 261055 Multiport Valve for Triton And Quad D.E. Filters, 2 Inch, 7 1/2 Inch Centerline which is pretty much their industry standard for more than twenty years now (since they stopped using Hayward multiport valves!).

So, that would be my sand filter setup of choice. Now that you're considering a more expensive filter, have you checked out Pentair's DE (diatomaceous earth) filters? Better, finer filtration in the same amount of filter time although a bit more maintenance as the media has to be replaced occasionally.

But yes, that is a good filter.

If you don't want to buy the real ones, you can do this in a different way more cheaply.

Just use a skimmer sock or anything similar
https://www.amazon.com/Pool-Filter-Savers-Skimmer-5-Pack/dp/B00373PFT8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1468852534&sr=8-3&keywords=slime+bag

You may need to get an adapter fitting for yoru return:
https://www.amazon.com/Poolmaster-Hose-Adapter-Set-2/dp/B006H42MLI/ref=sr_1_28?ie=UTF8&qid=1468852896&sr=8-28&keywords=pool+return+adapter
and then just use a rubber band or zip tie to hold the skimmer sock onto the fitting to create your DIY slime bag.

This is only $40 with shipping.

That's hard to beat unless space is an issue but definitely worth considering for someone that doesn't already have carbon.

Buy these 2 things. Ensure that is the correct element. Take a picture of the data plate into your local pool store and tell them you need a replacement element (actual filter) and a locking knob.
Actually, you should buy 2 elements as that filter system is undersized for that amount of volume. Keep one clean and DEGREASED at all times, swap them when the filter pressure rises by ~15 psi and DEGREASE it overnight before using again.

Here is how to proper clean and DEGREASE a cartridge filter. it is not clean until it is DEGREASED!! Note step #4, it is the most important.

Thanks for the reply. I've decided to go with a new DE filter. I'm going to do the replacement with my brothers help.

I'm looking at this filter. The 50 model. My pool is 18000 gallons.
Thoughts?

Sure - here's some pics - https://imgur.com/a/Yl2DxEe

I run it for about 8 hours overnight and a few more hours in the AM. I've got it set on a schedule via a wi-fi plug.

I've been using this reusable filter I got from amazon and its been going pretty well - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00W06Z2UU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I rinse out the filter every other day or so and it catches a lot, but the old paper filters used to catch a lot more of the brown oil stuff maybe.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Any advice specific to this re-usable filter would be great too.

  1. Your filter is probably quite old, Hayward probably changed something and released it as II

  2. Pleatco is OK, I would spend the extra few bucks and go with a Unicel. Just measure your old one, and make sure it matches the new dimensions
