Redington Crosswater combo ($132 with Prime)

If he likes smallmouth and catches them in his favorite creeks then get the 6wt. If he prefers trout then get the 9' 5wt option. This rod in a 6wt will also work for pond/lake fishing for bass. If he went to a bigger river then he would do fine with it as well, whether wading or in a boat.

He will also need a leader and some tippet. For $8.61 you can get him an individual leader, or for $16 you can get him the three pack. For tippet, if you get him the 8 pound leader then you should get him the 8 pound tippet for $7.57.

For leader longevity he will want tippet rings for $11.72. This will allow him to use his leaders for much longer rather than needing to re-buy leaders sooner. I know we're outside of your budget at this point past the leader, but if you can swing it then all of these things will provide what he needs outside of flies. Maybe someone else is getting him presents and could supplement the rest. Sometimes fly rod combos will come with leaders, but I didn't see it mentioned on the Crosswater combo. You'll notice I tailored it more to bass. If you find out he's more of a trout guy, then read on.

For $10.78 you can get a 3-pack of 9' 4x leaders. He can fish small streamers and nymphs with these, but would want a thinner leader for dry flies. For creeks he will probably fish small streamers and nymphs most of the time anyways, so this is a good choice (in my opinion). You'll still want the tippet rings listed above to make the leader purchase last a long time. For tippet, a spool of 4x tippet material for $11.43. The tippet prices seem high to me so you might want to dig around some more for options.

Other doodads to consider would be nippers and a zinger, hemostats, and a net. Teeth are a substitute for nippers, but biting through fishing line does wear your teeth. Hemostats aren't as necessary if he pinches the barbs on his hooks. You can get away with not using a net, but it is easier on the fish and the fisherman to use one.

Hopefully this helps and points you in the right direction. If you have questions just send me a message.

I've used this cheapo POS for 3 years now fresh and saltwater. Caught everything from bluegill to 28" stripers

Probably wont last forever, but I'll just buy a new one when that happens.

Here is the one I've been looking at.... from my research it's one of the better options out there. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DP2VE22/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_0u5kzbMP504TB

I got this one from Amazon and it has treated me very well. Easily folds up in my car's backseat. Got the 7-footer I believe. I'm sure a monster striper would snap it, but I've had no problem with 1-2 lb trout from my local rivers. 1 year warranty as well: https://www.amazon.com/YONGZHI-Telescopic-Spinning-Saltwater-Freshwater/dp/B075R4MYY3/

Well I’m probably the wrong person to ask.. I picked up a pretty basic tenkara rod off amazon at the end of this summer. Haven’t fished in years tho, and fly/tenkara is 100% new to me. I took it out on a trip about a month ago just to play around with it. I didn’t pack the tube, but it did come with a cloth sleeve. I just dropped the butt in my side pocket and cinched some shockcord around the rod end. Honestly, it worked fine, but I wouldn’t be opposed to the security of slipping it into a more substantial sleeve.

My rig is just a Shakespeare Ugly Stik spinning reel combo mess that I got at Gander's going out of business sale. It's very similar to this one but it came with a different tackle set. It's a 5' light action that's rated from 4-10 lbs. The reel is a basic shakespeare spinning reel.

I'm using the 6lb line that came with and I bought another spool of 6lb from Trilene (XL Smooth Casting, 110yds)

All I know how to do is tie knots and casting into wind is horrendous.

The only thing I was using for weight with the powerbait was a jig head. I don't own pliers so I wasn't able to crimp any of the weights on and it didn't matter anwyay, it was too damn windy.

I'm basically fishing on no budget so losing gear pisses me off way more than it should.

EDIT: Light action rod, not ultra

This is all you need to get started on a budget.

Find some local ponds and get to casting. Try getting a topwater frog or some plastic worms if you want some bass action. Head on over to r/fishing to post your catch!

How about this pflueger president combo. Amazon has it on sale for $59

Ultralight and ultraportable setup. Easy to learn to cast and good distance with the right lures.

The right lures are Trout Magnets, easy to tie, don't snag a lot and you can add a bobber to the line and let it drift. If there's anything else besides trout (young bass, bluegills, etc), you'll get them too.

It's my "fall back to having fun" kit for when bigger bass isn't in the mood or I don't want to bother hauling stuff. Two rod combos and a TM kit will have both of you fishing for a year.

If I was in the market, I'd consider both /u/anglrNick 's Fenwick World Class and a Cortland competition nymph rod which can be bought separately for $250 or as a whole outfit with Lamson Liquid reel and Cortland line for $370.

Checking it out

This actually is so fucking good. Can u americanos help me understand this better. Do they really give the entire lurebox with all that material + carryable bag with the rod? For that entire thing 40-69$??

Also this set is similarly cheap, similar quality and not as ugly. https://www.amazon.com/SupsShop-Telescopic-Saltwater-Freshwater-Professional/dp/B07GTK8JRX/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_200_tr_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&refRID=KJE2WMA2PXP585Z285ZH&th=1

Even with 20$ shipping costs to EU it actually would be crazy valuable. We have nothing like this in our european lands

Little telescopic zebco has served me pretty well. Liked the reel enough that I put it on a better rod and put a little trigger spin on this one so line wouldn't get caught while it's in the console of my truck.

There is definitely luck involved with fishing! I suspect your youngest will never let you forget it.

At age 5, my youngest caught a 4.5 lb 20 inch largemouth bass using her princess fishing pole pan fishing off our dock. There was a 3-4" bluegill on the line and the bass took the bluegill. Luckily the bass did not swallow the hook deeply enough that the hook could not be removed.

She was very excited to have caught the bass, but didn't want anything to do with being near it to have her picture taken. We did release it and my youngest was happy to see it swim off.

Did you release the taimen or not?

I have been so broke this week, been trying to sell this thing forever since it's just sitting here and I'll never use it. posted it first $30, then $15, now $5. Honestly I just need some beer money. Shipping will prob be about $12 and it will go out mon. morning. the exact model is the Okuma Cascade S-903-5, it's 9' long and apparently 5 weight. Handle is still shrink wrapped. This seems to be the model, except mine is just the rod, doesn't come with the reel. I can do paypal. Thanks for taking a look

Extremely transportable and will do for any amateur freshwater fishing. The link above is just an example, many options out there. I wouldn't want a four piece rod, just my opinion.

Just like others have said strap them in the canoe though my group goes a step farther and we use a plastic tube to help protect them. You can get the stupid expensive rod holders or just go to Michaels or any craft store and get a large telescoping tube art protector as far as the reels just pack those in the pack in a plastic Tupperware container in your pack... as far as rods go I know Eagle claw makes a cheap rod that breaks down in 4 parts it suites my dad well for some fishing. It's not bad but I do like my pflueger carbon fiber rod similar to this my understanding is that the rod I use is an older model they don't make any more (I'll check my model number later)

I saw that Girlsplaywow is a jerk if she won't buy herself something. Busy week! You'll be fine in your 10k, and congrats on your anniversary!

If you decide to do this and I win, 1) you rule, 2) i'd love to receive either this for my gear or this new rod.

You are NOT a jerk!!!

The link wasnt working correctly for me, I assume this is the one

Some one else will be able to advise you better (I am not in the USA) but I have a couple of questions, which might help people advise you better.

  1. What are you fishing for? I assume trout?

  2. What locations will you be fishing? rivers (large or small?), still waters, from a boat?

  3. Will the area have trees that you will need to avoid? (helps with rod lengths).
