The main thing you did wrong is not having a good, bright light handy. I carry one of these everywhere, with or without a firearm. It lives on my desk at night, a step away from my bed. You don't ever want to be armed, in the dark, unable to properly illuminate and identify targets. If you had a good, bright light, you could have lit that person up through the window and probably sent them running.

Lights are cheap, in the overall scheme of things. You shouldn't be deploying a firearm without one.

I hope you called the police and reported this incident.

u/Virisenox_ · 22 pointsr/flashlight

Those were before my time. I've only been here for about three years.
Here are some new points of interest:

  • Acebeam W10: Uses a laser to create a very small point of light, which is then focused by a lens to make an 250lm 1000m thrower with a diameter of 31.5mm.
  • Acebeam X70: 60,000 lumens. The king of output, as of now.
  • BLF GT: Over 2000m of throw for $260. It has a ramping UI too. The GT70 is similar, but with a much higher output LED.
  • Emisar flashlights: Compact, affordable, FET driven lights with ramping UI.
  • BLF Q8: A quality, affordable SRK style soda can light. Amazon link.
  • BLF/TLF FW3A: 1x18650 triple with an electronic tailswitch. In the works.
  • BLF Lantern: A lantern based around an SRK flashlight. In the works.
u/cat-gun · 13 pointsr/SexWorkers

A few other suggestions, of varying cost and practicality:

  • Contact the police and make a report. Don't mention the sex work, just say he contacted you through a social networking site. Keep a diary of every encounter. Save his messages, voicemail, letters. Likewise, tell people you trust what is going on. Ask them to keep a diary. You want to establish a paper trail, so that if you ever need to defend yourself against him, you aren't the one who gets convicted of assault.

  • Submit the guys name and contact info to the blacklists at SafeOffice.com, uglymugs, and ourlist.nl. This won't really help you defend against him, but it may be satisfying to know that you're helping to prevent him from doing the same to someone else.

  • Team up with some other sex workers in your area. Install the Cell 411 app, so you can alert each other if a client goes nuts on you.

  • Befriend your neighbors. Invite them over for a dinner party or two. If you're attacked, you want to be able to escape to a friendly place.

  • Consider taking a model mugging class, where you can practice-- with full force--what to do if you are attacked.

  • If you ever see him in public, start screaming at the top of your lungs "Help me! Help me! This man is going to attack me! Help me!" while pointing your fingers at him. Set off a personal alarm. This will draw attention to him, which will hopefully embarrass him, and cause him to leave the scene.

  • Walk through your daily routine, and identify places where you would be vulnerable to attack: public garages, unlighted streets, subway. Plan out what you would do in each location. Which shops are nearby? What are their hours? Where you can you hide? Where dead-ends/traps to avoid?

  • Stop by the shops in your neighborhood, and show them a picture of the guy (if you have one). Tell them that he's been stalking you and ask them to let you know if they see him in the shop.

  • Seek out your local SWOP chapter and befriend other sex workers. Ask how they deal with stalkers. Social support from people who understand what you're going through will help boost your mood, and reduce your anxiety.

  • Ask a friend to stay with you until this blows over.

  • Consider going on tour. If you have friends and relatives in other cities, ask them if you can stay with them until he gives up.

  • Get a roommate. Get multiple roommates.

  • If you have few ties to your current city, consider moving to another city.

  • Get an intimidating dog, like a German Shephard or Rottweiler.

  • Move to an apartment with a doorman and a gated entry.

  • Hire a driver to take you to appointments. Avoid public transit--take Uber or Lyft instead.

  • Start a program of weight training. Build up your muscle and strength. Not only will this increase your ability to defend itself, it will boost your mood, reduce anxiety, and keep you fit.

  • Keep a tactical flashlight in your car, your purse, bed, and door. Use it to blind a would-be assailant. Practice using it as a baton to strike an assailant.

  • Carry a baseball bat/defensive cane in your car. Practice swinging it with full force against a would-be assailant.

  • Carry bear spray. Buy several cans, and practice using them.

  • If you live in a state where you can do so, get a concealed carry permit and a handgun, and learn how to use it.

  • Beef up the frame, lock, and strike plate on your door, so it can't be easily bashed in. Install bars/security screens on your windows.

  • Install a visual doorbell, so you can see who is at your door, before answering, or getting close to the door.

  • Install security cameras around your house / apartment. Install motion sensors.

  • Hire a detective to create a dossier on him. Find out where he lives and works. Find out his vehicle license plate number. Find out if he has children, a wife, a mother. Have a heavily tattooed, tall, burly guy deliver the dossier to him at his office, and ask him ever so kindly not to contact you again.

> streamlight protac HL 4

Just get her a $12 convoy with an orange peel reflector. Or something like a Thrunite TC12 with a charging port and save $20

u/Handsome_Zack · 13 pointsr/flashlight

You'll get plenty far with $50! u/PnwStimm has a great suggestion with the Q8 - its about the best bang-for-your-buck light you can get. However, it won't come with the required 4 18650 li-ion cells you need, and that will bump its cost by at least $15-20.

A fairly new light to the scene is the ThruNite TC15, which blasts out an amazing 2300 lumens AND comes with a quality 18650 battery. It isn't an uber-tactical military flashlight, but it has a direct access shortcut to turbo which is something I really enjoy. The UI is very well set up.

If you think he would want to play cop and look the part, you could look into offerings from ArmyTek or Nitecore that look the part (I can help with that if you want to go this route).

So long as you don't laugh at the name, there is another option: my first "real" flashlight was a WOWTAC A1S BSS v2 and it kinda fits the bill - the (removable) strike bezel is absurd, it has a red light filter, and it has an interesting driver that can be controlled from both the e-switch on the side and the tail switch (for normal or "tactical" use). Its served me pretty well, and the 1050 lumens it puts out is absolutely no joke.

EDIT TO ADD: /u/parametrek has an insanely handy website for finding a wide variety of flashlights within specific parameters. Here is a custom search for flashlights/weaponlights under $50 with over 700 lumens (which in my head is pretty farking bright). You may want to dig through these and see if there's anything that catches your eye!

u/mpak87 · 10 pointsr/flashlight

Okay, lots of questions there. It seems like you’re asking for one light that will do what most of us would have three for. As a general concept, any light you have will be balancing size versus power. The main issue there is heat dissipation. You can get tiny, absurdly powerful pocket lights (4000+ lumen Emisar D4 is a great example) but they can sustain that brightness level for about 15 seconds before they start thermally throttling down, and you can literally start fires with them. Any single-18650 light is going to be able to dissipate enough heat to put out a maximum of about 700 lumens continuously, and maybe as much as 1000. Turbo has its place, but for any kind of extended run you aren’t going to need (or maybe even want) something that bright. I rotate through a handful of edc lights (BLF-A6, Fireflies E07, which is just as much a stupid hot rod as the D4, and the Emisar D4s, which is actually practical enough to be a recommendation.) All of these are set to come on at a ~200 lumen level out of the pocket, and I rarely need more.

The Eagtac lights you linked to are probably great, but I don’t have any personal experience with them. For your EDC you’d probably be fine getting the smallest single 18650 option there.

Answering your question about sacrificing lumens for throw, yes, basically, but it depends on the application for the light. Most of the edc lights you’ll see around here tend to have a balance of flood and throw, trending to the flood side. The three I cycle through are balance on the flood side, pure flood, and balance on the throw side respectively. For day to day edc stuff, I don’t generally find myself needing much throw at all.

Your statement about occasional use looking for dogs by the lake sounds to me like a use case for a completely different light. There’s no sense in buying something to fit that use case that won’t work as well in your EDC that’s 99% of your use. You would want either a thrower or something with a balance of throw and flood. The standard recommendation there is a BLF Q8, which is a four-18660 “soda can” format light, and just blasts a whole crapload of light a long way. The Emisar D4s is a single-26650 light that’s just barely too big to pocket carry (I use a holster) but it has a nearly identical beam profile, and is hard to go wrong with. Between them in size, and since you really like USB-C, my actual recommendation is a Sofirn SP36. It’s somewhat new to the market, but it was designed by the BLF folks, gets good reviews, and Sofirn is a good manufacturer. It’s basically a three-cell version of the BLF Q8 (which they also manufacture.)

If that still seems like too much flood, and dangit you want a lightsaber, get a Thrunite Catapult V6. It has onboard charging, but it’s micro-USB. You won’t EDC it, but it will fit in a jacket pocket, and throws an unbelievable distance.

I’ll leave you with a final recommendation, though it actually fits in the first category. Assuming you’re okay with a micro-USB charger, the new Thrunite TC15 is a super-powerful single-18650 light that has a deep carry pocket clip, and I think would make a kickass edc for you. It’s accidental that my three suggestions for you just barely squeaked in under your $200 budget, but if you were to order the three I linked to you would have a hell of a lot more useful collection than many.

u/clusterphuk · 10 pointsr/EDC

Fox 40 Sonik whistle. Not something to be used for fun. This is a real emergency whistle that can reach 120+ dB. It's equivalent to having a chainsaw revving next to your head. They also make a standard version if you're not trying to blow out ear drums. It still gets pretty loud.

Olight I3E EOS

Olight I1R EOS if you want something rechargeable.

Also, Olight does regular sales and new releases on their website.

Streamlight is another great option but their keychain size offering is just not very good compared to Olight. I do believe everyone should have a Pro Tac 1L-1AA since it can take both C123A batteries and standard AA batteries.

u/SirRipo · 9 pointsr/EDC

IMO, 1AAA lights are the best option for EDC. Ranging anywhere from like 50-150 lumens, and both small and light. The Olight I3E is a great option, or the ITP EOS A3 which seems to be the basis of the Maratac AAA, my favorite little EDC light.

u/Zak · 9 pointsr/flashlight
  • Thrunite TC12 (neutral white)
  • Thrunite TC10 (neutral white)
  • Klarus XT11S Edit I linked this instead of the GT. It has lower total output than the GT, but a more intense hotspot for longer throw
  • Klarus XT11GT (yeah, it's $5 over budget, but it's significantly brighter for the first couple minutes until it gets hot)

All of these come with a battery and charge from MicroUSB. The Thrunites need to have their power switch turned on to charge. The Klarus does not. All of these can use standard 18650 batteries as spares and standard MicroUSB cables/chargers to charge - nothing proprietary.
u/angryqueso · 9 pointsr/flashlight

For an aesthetically pleasing and small light, I'd recommend the ReyLight Pineapple.

A beautiful brass light that takes either standard AA's or rechargeable 14500's if you want higher output. High CRI out of the Nichia LED, and isn't too big. Most people will recommend that you get an 18650 light (and so would I honestly) but a lot of new people to the flashlight world don't want to have to get a light with special batteries or one that is as large as an 18650 light.

If you want a buy once/cry once option, there is the Zebralight Sc64w which is pretty much the smallest 18650 light on the market, and practically the best. But then you'll need at least 2 batteries and a charger, so factor that cost in.

I hope I could help!

u/ZapperDubs · 9 pointsr/flashlight

I'll go with this AA Zebralight, much appreciated as always!

u/Jamestown2017 · 8 pointsr/CCW

400? For just $50, you can get a pocket clip capable 2300 lumen ball busting badass of a flashlight

u/inqbus406 · 8 pointsr/flashlight

It's gonna be more like $70, but I'd go for the Sofirn SP36 Anduril with batteries (and it has USB-C charging). I personally think it's worth the slight increase; it's a really good value.

Flashlights aren't self defense tools. Flashlights are only tools for awareness, which is key in self defense. Unless you are 9th-degree ninjitsu master you are only putting yourself in more danger considering them such. Get your LTC/ CCW, pepper-spray, or self-defense training/ Krav Maga.

For what you are looking for, I'd get this.

u/bmengineer · 8 pointsr/flashlight

I'm not a firm believer in 'strike bezels' being particularly good at striking anything, but here's a few options. All of these are single 18650 lights that should have no issue fitting in that sheath.

u/Muskaos · 7 pointsr/Firearms

Not illegal, per se, but would be considered brandishing in most jurisdictions because it is attached to a firearm.

Weapon lights are for target identification. Hand held lights are for searching. Spend the $41 on Amazon to get a decent Streamlight.

Flashlight my dude, you won't be able to go back after carrying one.

Going by the rest of the stuff you carry i'd say a small AAA light that you can either attach to your keys or clip inside a pocket.

A couple of recommendations:

To clip on to keys: The Olight i3 EOS. 1xAAA 90 lumens, 45min runtime. Simple twist on/off, one mode, plenty bright for most daily stuff. If you want something multi-mode still good for your keys, the Thrunite Ti3 and Lumintop AAA Tool are honourable mentions too.

To clip to your pocket: The Streamlight Microstream. 1xAAA 45 lumens, 2.5hr runtime. Solid pocket clip and push-button that lends itself to be a really good momentary light but can be clicked on for continuous use. Really solid light, inexpensive, Tried and trusted by a lot of the EDC community. Honourable mention goes to the Streamlight Stylus Pro. Almost the exact same light but longer. 2xAAA, 90 lumens, 6 hour runtime if you don't mind the weight of an extra AAA on you.

u/qweltor · 6 pointsr/CCW

> Anything you would have done different?

Carry a flashlight.

A LED Maglight works just fine. Compact flashlights are easy to carry, and have high/low/strobe modes.

u/CaptRon25 · 6 pointsr/flashlight

The Thrunite Neutron 2C V3 complete kit 50 bucks. Ramping UI

u/bombadil1564 · 5 pointsr/flashlight

If you are okay sticking with AA that won't accept 14500's, then Zebralight's SC53c or SC5c Mk II are excellent choices.

Lights (according to Parametrek's site that accept both AA and 14500 that might be worth looking into:

Thrunite Archer 1A V3 Neutral White

Fenix LD09 (2015)

Fenix LD11

Olight S1A

Fenix LD12 (2017)

Fenix RC05

Rofis TR15

That should get you started. I don't own any of those suggested lights (though I do own a Zebralight and quite like it). I recommend a neutral white tint (4000-5000K) and ideally high CRI (shows colors better, could be important as an ele-chicken...is that a black or green wire?!)

u/General_Specialist · 5 pointsr/flashlight

What are your shelters for? Can you give us any more details on your situation?

Without knowing much about what you really need, I would recommend you look at the Thrunite Archer 1A. You can get it on Amazon for about $30. It runs on 1 AA battery, it's bright, small, easy to use, and it has a very low mode that can provide a small amount of light for 1-2 weeks.

One more thing: do NOT rely on alkaline batteries for your emergency kits. They tend to leak after a while and may damage other items in the process. Invest in some Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA (L91) cells for your kits. Yes, they're more expensive, but they won't leak and they have a great shelf life.

u/Nigel_Yearning · 5 pointsr/preppers

Okay, I made a decision. I got myself this ThruNite TC12 V2. Even though it runs off of an 18650 battery, it is micro USB rechargeable. u/annoyingone had mentioned about getting a solar panel system for the batteries. In that case, I do not need to worry about hoarding AA or AAA batteries so much. However, I have to be aware of the tradeoffs and keep some less superior flashlights on hand. Again, I plan to use my EDC flashlight as a last resort when no other light is available. I have some Maglites I would like to use for self-defense and to use as a primary and only whip out the ThruNite when I really need it. Thank you sir for the help!

u/ThisIsWhatICarry · 5 pointsr/caving

What is your budget?

<$20: a good book on caving, or some batteries. Lithium AA/AAA if they don't like rechargeables, AA/AAA NiMH if they do. I've had good luck with the brand Tenergy, which is sold in bulk by AllBattery.com. They're basically cheap Chinese imports but their QA is decent. (Source: I'm a professional photographer who's used them for years.) Go for the 2,500 mAh capacity. You might also consider a decent charger. More on that shortly.

<$50: One of the best chargers on the market is this bad boy, but it's somewhat expensive and only charges 4 cells at once. However, it charges them safely (not overcharging, not charging too fast, etc, which limits long-term life), can identify bad cells, and can charge almost any cylindrical battery out there, including the far superior 18650 cell, which is important for a good headlamp or flashlight. For a good headlamp, consider the ThruNite TH10 in neutral white for $40, or the same headlamp with a battery for $15 more. Note: this light doesn't use AA/AAA batteries; it uses the 18650 battery, which is slightly larger but 4 times the capacity of an AA battery and is able to discharge power fast enough to support amazingly bright lights. Every light I'm linking here supports multiple brightness modes, with a maximum brightness around 1,000 lumens, i.e. as bright as your car's headlights. They also drop to between 0.4 lumens and 1 lumen at their lowest setting, which will last for up to 70-ish days. Yes, really. That's a nice feature to have in a cave.

<$100: A good headlamp/flashlight. Most cavers I know are old-school when it comes to flashlights because they aren't aware of some of the incredible LED and battery innovations that have occured. Most of their headlamps are either small and underpowered or huge and bulky and... still underpowered sometimes. I'd recommend a ThruNite TC-12 v2 in neutral white. It also uses an 18650 battery. The light bundle I linked includes one battery and the light is USB chargable, though that charger I linked earlier will charge the battery faster.

You can add a helmet strap if you know they use a helmet. If you're looking for a headlamp instead of a flashlight, consider the ThruNite TH10 I linked earlier or the Nitecore HC30 in neutral white which is slightly more expensive. Nitecore and ThruNite are fairly similar, though in my opinion Nitecore looks more "tactical" while ThruNite's electronics are slightly better. Both are good companies, however.

<$150: If you decide to get a light and extra batteries, don't get any battery with a brand containing the word "fire". (Those brands are known for lying about the capacities and being fire risks.) I'd recommend a 4-pack of KeepPower 3,400 mAh 18650 batteries if you're going for that kind of batteries as they're a good brand and I own them myself.

Some other considerations: a nice base layer, i.e. thermal underwear. I'd strongly recommend merino wool as it's thin, light, and warm even when it's wet. Cost: $50-$100 per item for a top or bottom/long johns. And they'll always have a warm, fuzzy feeling when they think of you. ;-)

u/ThisNameIsValid27 · 5 pointsr/flashlight

You could get the Atactical A1S for £25.99 (so long as you don't care about USB charging or a moonlight mode, it comes with a protected battery with a port on it) and then buy some quality batteries as backups and a quality charger and still have a bit left over.

You could just about afford a ThruNite TC12 if you wanted a USB charging light, but that doesn't leave you with spare money for more batteries and a charger. It does come with one protected battery though.

u/NerfEveryoneElse · 5 pointsr/flashlight

Thrunite Neutron 2C if you dont want to take the battery out for charging and better UI than the already mentioned wowtac.

u/maefartsmell · 5 pointsr/flashlight

How about Sofirn SP36S? $53. Very simple UI, not quite 3 levels, (its 5 levels) Also comes with a ramping UI.

It's a complete package flashlight. (Comes with 3 batteries and integrated charger)

u/ggf31416 · 4 pointsr/flashlight

Sofirn SP31 v2.0 is similar to the Wowtac A1S (dual switch but XP-L HI LED, so it's throwier). The low is 5lm. It's overpriced in Amazon, you can get it cheaper at AliExpress. Edit: Another option is the Sofirn SP32A v2.0, it allows you to choose between the fixed modes and ramping, but as it's side switch only you should use either electronic or mechanical lockup to prevent accidental activation.

Another option is the Thorfire VG15S (tail-switch only). Its XM-L2 LED is not the newest but it's still bright and the flashlight has a 0.5lm moonlight, the bundled battery is not bad and it isn't too expensive. The XP-L used in the Wowtac is pretty much a miniaturized version of the XM-L2 to fit in smaller spaces, they are very similar in performance.

u/Carlin225 · 4 pointsr/flashlight

What battery are you using and what are you pointing it at? The materials most likely to actually burn are dark clothing or black paper. Receipt paper that has been blacked out with a marker can ignite in seconds. But that demands a high discharge battery, like a 30Q.

That said, look into the SP36. Same UI as the FW3A so it has the fun blinky modes, 5000+ lumens, high CRI, USB C charging, and affordable. It’s pretty great. Give it these batteries for good performance. You can get batteries with higher discharge, but the heat makes sustained output at those extreme levels impractical. 30Qs will get you melted plastic and scorched pants while still keeping decent capacity.

Actual user report.

I have the $27 one cell Anker light similar to yours, since June 2018. I used it extensively for a few months until I arrived at /r/flashlight. In fact, just used it tonight so I could write this honestly.

My observations:

  • appears very solidly built aluminum body

  • includes battery and onboard USB charging!

  • Beam is wide enough for close in and out to 100yds or so. This is very subjective.

  • Has not broken after being dropped, nor failed in the rain. (IP65 rated)

  • Has always turned on and off, and run time has lasted through all my hikes.

  • Endcap unscrews to expose a micro USB charging port, which has worked well so far.

  • Has three modes (HML) + flash + strobe. Memory works to return to last HML mode used. IMO, the memory feature is one of the most important elements of a good UI.

  • available at amazon with customary fast, inexpensive US shipping, and very well regarded Anker customer service.

Notice: I just discovered the 2 cell version has non-replaceable cells. Choose the 1 cell model that I have (replaceable cells).

Would I buy this again? Probably not. Is it "bad". No, has been ok for me. Just understand what you are buying. Of course, YMMV. Read this

I had similar issues, but in the IT field (squeezing through server racks, etc). For your specific situation, I would recommend a combination of:

  • Any single-AA light from a reputable company, that comes with a pocket clip: Thrunite, Fenix, Zebralight, etc. Ditch the lanyard, it will snag.
  • A super-sturdy tool pouch that is made for abuse. Your light will clip into the pouch, instead of your pocket. Ripoffs brand is my favorite, for reasons below. You can buy their stuff on Amazon, but use their main website to look up the model numbers. CO- is clip-on, and BL- is belt loop.

A good tool pouch is critical here. Your problem is that the pocket-sized AA lights are designed to clip into a pocket or pouch, not directly to your belt. If clipping directly to a belt, the clip will get bent out of shape, or else it will squeeze itself off of your belt when the light snags on something.

I like Ripoffs brand because they are super rugged, and designed for daily use in your conditions. The belt clip actually surrounds the belt, so it cannot be pulled off accidentally. I recommend getting a flat, open-ended tool pouch or electrician pouch, for easy reholstering. You don't specifically need a flashlight pouch- it can be anything with the right dimensions. Be wary of 'mini maglite' size, as it may be too skinny.

Models that will likely fit your needs would be:

  • CO-64 or CO-32, for just the light
  • CO-7, If you want things covered and also have some space for wire cutters / pliers

I'm glad people got you up to speed on carrying an approved TQ.

I have not see anyone mention where to actually get training, so here's a starting point:

https://www.bleedingcontrol.org/may/learn-how

I'm somewhat concerned with the O.C. spray, as according to their website "18% OC" isn't a thing. Major Capsinoids are what determines how effective OC is and nowhere do they mention what percentage of Major Capsinoids their spray contains. It cannot be 18% as the most effective sprays used by law enforcement (i.e. Sabre Red, etc) are at 1.33%. Get and carry Sabre Red. Problem solved. Do not get gel, unless you like the idea of waiting around for half a minute or so for the effects to manifest themselves. Gel has a much longer activation time and you lose the inhalation effects. Get a stream.

https://www.sabrered.com/formulations-heat-strength-and-law

Jabber. Likely worthless. Even if you know and are well-versed in kubotan techniques, they still aren't a worthwhile defensive tool because they can't cause enough pain or do enough damage to physically incapacitate a determined attacker. If you are looking for a defensive tool to carry in your hand, carry the spray.
Spray should be your first option for de-escalation and defense, after of course awareness and avoidance.

Lights. Invest in a quality light or three. Olight, Fenix, Streamlight and Surefire make excellent lights. I have a small Olight I3E on my key fob. It's an excellent emergency, always have it sort of little light.

The Streamlight Microstream is another excellent small light. I generally always have one of these as a spare in whatever bag I have on me.

https://www.streamlight.com/en/products/detail/index/microstream-usb

My main EDC lights are the Fenix PD36R, the Surefire EDCL-T2 and the Olight M2R Warrior. Both the SIIIR and S1 Baton from Olight are also excellent if you're looking for something slightly smaller.

Any of the above listed also make excellent headlamps. I also like Petzls and REI has some really good deals on them right now, like:

https://www.rei.com/product/109952/petzl-actik-headlamp-2018?CAWELAID=120217890003369271&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=15724846360&CATCI=pla-401945114287&cm_mmc=PLA_Google%7C404_87834%7C1099520003%7Cnone%7C_kenshoo_clickid_%7Cpla-401945114287&lsft=cm_mmc:PLA_Google_LIA%7C404_87834%7C1099520003%7Cnone%7C_kenshoo_clickid_&kclid=_kenshoo_clickid_&gclid=Cj0KCQjw753rBRCVARIsANe3o45iZ9-_AWJCwfsv2DCPv-g9gKBl43-zL4-f2q64a7QpuSpCCfUYxM4aAqwHEALw_wcB

Strongly consider adding or swapping out your bandanas for actual N95 masks. N95 means they will filter 95% of particulates. There are N99 and N100 masks as well, but an N95 will be adequate for filtering out dust and smoke in almost all short term scenarios you might encounter.

My last suggestion since you seem to be properly concerned with self defense is this:

Go find a Judo club or a jiu jitsu gym and train. Go once and then don't stop going. Any reputable club or gym will allow you to come in and audit a class or two for free. I've watched female whitebelts with 6 months of regular practice absolutely demolish big new guys coming into the gym.

Reylight Pineapple V3 for 54$ on amazon, yeah it's a AA light and pretty heavy as it's brass but for it's size it far outperforms any AAA light that I'm aware of and a lot of AA lights too. If brightness is your main concern this would be my choice.

Edit: If you grab a 14500 cell too it doubles the already impressive output, I currently use Eneloops in mine and even then this is an excellent light in a fairly compact size.

Edit: Found it, here's the body of it.

Edit 2: Still not available yet, so much for quick. EBay may be your best bet for quick.

Dear Customer,

Great News! ! BLF Q8 flashlight will be available on amazon USA soon. If you would like to order more, we have limited quantity promo codes(49% off)and the price would be the same as Group Buy: $40.

And If it is convenient for you, could you please spare a few minutes and help to share an honest review of BLF Q8 light on amazon? Here is the product link.

Pocket friendly

Emisar D4 $40, 1x18650 cell

Emisar D4s $50, 1x26650 cell

Soda Can style

Cheaper: BLF Q8 4x18650 cells - Amazon.com $73, or Banggood.com $60

Higher output: Thrunite TN36 4x18650 cells- Amazon $140

Decent 18650 cells will run you $5-9 each and a 4 cell charger will be around $20, so factor that in as well.

u/atetuna · 3 pointsr/flashlight

I wouldn't go for quite the same size. There's not much point to the length, and the weight makes it unwieldy. The thickness is good though. We have what we call soda can lights because they're about the size of a soda can, and I think you'll like that size.

The BLF Q8 sells for around $50. It's a great light. It costs more on Amazon right now, but occasionally it goes on sale. I'll warn that this light was created to work very well in ways that you can't see without taking it apart, and to avoid other lights that look the same because they took a lot of shortcuts that make them perform horribly that can't be fixed without spending more than it would cost to buy a Q8. There's also a Sofirn version of the Q8 that's legit, but it has a colder tint that I recommend against if you want to see rattlers.

The next light I'd look at is the Emisar D18. It's a little skinnier, and twice as expensive, but twice as bright. The best thing about it is the LED options. I've found that rattlers are easier to see with a light that has a slightly rosy tint, so I'd get warm white 3000K LED's. That one also has great CRI, so things will look more natural. I think the D18 would be a better match for you than the Q8.

You'll need batteries and a charger, and you'll need to be careful where you buy batteries. The type of battery you get is a big deal too. The "30Q" is a solid battery. Mtn Electronics is a safe source, and he lists some other batteries that will work at the bottom of the page. Illumn is also a good source. Note that these are button tops. You can find cheaper batteries elsewhere, but they will probably be flat tops that may not make a solid electrical connection.

These two lights will blow you away. They're also side clickies like the Maglite. Honestly, if you've only used that Maglite, then you'll probably be very happy with this Wowtac A1S that only costs $26, and it comes with a battery that can be charged via usb. Make sure you buy the NW version.

I've mentioned tint a couple of times. Even if you don't buy any of these lights, you should pay attention to the tint. Avoid cold white lights. Those are about 6000K or higher. A neutral tint (4000K to 5000K) should be okay. Warm white is around 3000K or lower, and makes the colors on a rattler pop more.

May I suggest this to go on the keychain loop of the SAK?

u/_024 · 2 pointsr/EDC

Keep it light, keep it simple.

  • Knife: CRKT Squit ($16)

This small knife does the job without taking up much bulk in your pocket or EDC. And if you misplace it, it won't cost an arm and a leg to replace.

  • Light: Olight i3E ($10)

This light is fairly bright and is easy to use. Twist on/off. No fancy modes with this light. Waterproof and shock resistant in a compact package that runs on just a AAA battery. Also easy to replace if it mysteriously disappears.

  • Pen: Pilot G2 ($11 for 12 pack, around $1 per pen)

This pen doesn't need much of a story. It's cheap. It writes smooth. It conquers.

  • Watch: Casio W800H-1AV ($12)

This is a nice little watch for the price. It's tough and tells the time even in harsh conditions. If you somehow manage to break it or the battery dies, it's not going to break the bank to replace.

Don't carry much in the wallet department so a rubber band or binder clip would do the job. That'd be less than $0.10. Do the math!

So that's a grand total of $50. Excluding a phone or CCW since OP stated that isn't affected.

Not bad for a few quality items that will get you through a day to day basis easily.

    Sorry if I missed anything!

Edit: Added a watch to the mix. Added descriptions for all items. Formatting!
u/NullOverflow · 2 pointsr/ProtectAndServe

OP, IMHO, your best bet is going to be learning what to look for before the mugger picks you as a target. Once the person is intent on assaulting you physically, the best tool at that point is going to be a firearm, or maybe a fix blade knife if they got that close to you.

Situational awareness, pre-assault cues/indicators, verbal judo. Learn them, study them, master them. The fight you will win is a fight that you never get yourself into.

If you are out after dark often, have a good flashlight with you. Not one of those $5 walmart/gas station specials. A small, compact streamlight or Surefire is worth its weight in gold in dark situation to let you see what they are doing, and in a worst-case scenario, take away the attacker(s) ability to see what they are doing.

If you do change your mind to get a firearm, invest in good, quality training. Go beyond your state-mandated CCW course. Learn when or when not to use your gun, and even better, learn how to use the gun. But remember, if you get to the point to use that gun, you already lost half the battle.

u/jsamhead · 2 pointsr/flashlight

The Streamlight Protac 1L-1AA is currently $43 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Streamlight-88061-ProTac-Professional-Tactical/dp/B01G75P1SC

u/rsh2k1 · 2 pointsr/ar15

I've actually mounted a ProTac 1L-1AA ($38) to a Frank Proctor Light Mount ($59). It's not "M-Lok" per se, since it mounts to pic rails, but (a) you can mount to the top rail of the handguard, or (b) get a short rail section. I figured that's all I need for a 8" AR pistol for home defense needs.

I could see doing the same with a ProTac 2L-X for longer rifles to keep everything cheap and lightweight.

u/YoureAMigraine · 2 pointsr/antiMLM

Amazon is helpful here. I would advise getting two things: a reliable, bright flashlight, and strong pepper gel.

For the flashlight, I recommend a Streamlight Protac 1L-1AA (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01G75P1SC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_9ia.Bb301STP9) or the Streamlight Protac 2-LX (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WD29DZ8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_xka.Bb703WW4V).

There are a lot of good lights out there, but these two models are excellent and should meet the needs of most people. The 2-LX is bigger, brighter, and can use rechargeable batteries. However, the 1L-1AA has the advantage of being smaller. Both can easily fit in a pocket or purse.

Here’s a video review if the 2-LX: https://youtu.be/j_7RfUFYblU

Here’s a video comparing the two: https://youtu.be/vythpZUBab8

For the pepper gel, I recommend Sabre Red (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AT3LMP4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_6ga.BbRKDF9CK). It has good range, is super hot, and this kit comes with a practice unit.

u/QWOP_Expert · 2 pointsr/wheredidthesodago

I haven't used Klarus myself, but they appear to be similar to EagleTac and Fenix which are decent flashlights, although a bit overkill for most people.

I have a few Streamlight and Surefire lights which I am very happy with. Usually, if someone is looking to get a decent flashlight which isn't too expensive and will last a long time, I'd point them in the direction the Protac 1L-1AA, since CR123/18650 batteries can be hard to find/expensive in stores and it can use AA batteries in a pinch.

Most people don't really need a flashlight brighter than around 200 lumens, so a lot of these extreme lumen models are a bit overkill. Not to mention that usually with a lower lumen light the battery will last a lot longer.

u/GrandfatherRat · 2 pointsr/ar15

You’re ready to go then! For a budget light that’s reliable, I like this entry level streamlight. I have one on my 590a1, it will do fine on an AR. You will still need a compatible mount.

I use this flashlight. Mostly on trails. I carry it in my forward most hand. This allows you to point the light around turns. Having a light mounted on your board will not allow you to see where you are carving to. Board mounted lights are only good to help you to be seen. Terrible for actually riding. So, I do not have one to trade or anything, but before you order one, I will share this. I researched the uc35 for hours. Read on all the forums, looking at every comparable light that met the criteria as you listed. The conclusion that people kept leading me to was to forget the Fenix altogether, and get a ThruNite. The quality of construction is significantly better, the light is brighter, the light modes are more usable and varied. Plus, it's cheaper. I now have 2 of them, and after using them, 2 of my buddies ordered themselves one as well. I highly recommend it over the Fenix, and in this size and class, I think it really shines. Link for lazy. Get the $65 V2, and I personally prefer the neutral white version (NW) over the blue tint cool white (CW).

u/Astec123 · 2 pointsr/policeuk

I had a Peli torch which was a gift on leaving my old job, it lasted less than a year before it got broken in a scrap and has languished in my box of kit I no longer use or is broken ever since.

Afterwards I replaced it with a ThruNite 3C V2 which cost me very little overall, added a clickfast torch holder to it and it offers the best of both worlds as it has a 0.1lumen mode which is great for PNB entries. Plus up to a high level of lumens for actual work when on duty conducting searches, or simply as a light to see where you are going in the pitch black without having to hold a torch. This has actually worked in my favour a few times because I can get to other kit like cuffs and see what I am doing clearly hands free.

I've linked to the new version below. Call out to /r/flashlight as a good place to review for ideas but I would suggest any 18650 or other small rechargeable option would be a good shout provided it has a quick access low power mode and some other higher power modes too as a good fit for a vest.

I will recommend the Wowtac A1S bss v2

Its very bright (1100 lm 19200 cd), durable (check out the torture tests on youtube), and it has a detachable bezel for defensive purposes. Im a big fan of the two button UI as well. Definitely great value at this price point.

You should take /u/Helicopterrepairman's advice and check out r/flashlight to make sure you get a few awesome lights. You would be amazed what just $25-$75 can get you. This light would probably work out pretty well for you. There's plenty of options. Doing the exploring you're doing a few proper lights would be a HUGE help for you and it would really help your videos too.

I got both of those lights for under $40. The left one is an Emisar D1 mini thrower. I just got it this week and I love it. It has a good flood but not sports worthy, I would suggest the $65 BLF Q8 (largest, 4th from right in bottom picture) or $100 Emisar D18 at for that. The light on the right is a Nitecore P30. The P stands for precision. It's a fairly long range thrower and can light stuff up at 500 yards easily. I got it on sale for $35 but it's typically around $60. There is no flood for sports either. Both the D1 and P30 are 18650 powered throw lights but pocketable. You might like the BLF Q8 because it can be belt pouch carried or back pocket or jacket pocket carried. It also has a threaded spot for camera tripod mounts and would be great for camping and sports. It will require you to buy 4 high drain 18650 button top batteries and a charger.

u/dubyrunning · 1 pointr/flashlight

How loose/tight-fitting is your clothing, and how much do your pockets show beneath your shirt? That's going to affect how large the light can be before you or others notice it. For some people and their style of dress, a light that runs on an 18650 battery wouldn't be noticeable, while others would need a AA or even AAA sized light.

AAA/10440 Lights

If you're interested in not having the light visibly print in your pocket at all, like I was in choosing an EDC, and your clothes are relatively slim fitting, you're probably going to want a AAA/10440 sized light (10440 is the lithium ion version of a AAA sized battery, and produces brighter output but less runtime than a typical AAA alkaline, NiMH, or lithium primary battery).

I went with the Folomov EDC C1. It's got a coated brass body, warm light, and very high CRI (meaning it helps show colors better than low CRI lights). It clips tightly inside the front pocket or coin pocket and takes up very little space. I've been very much enjoying mine without issue, though others have had quality control issues where the emitter burnt out or developed a dead spot, so unless those issues are sorted out, your mileage may vary.

If you want something in the AAA size specifically from Amazon, the Ultratac K18 would probably serve you quite well.

AA/14500 Lights

If you're willing to go up to AA/14500 sized light, the Thrunite Archer 1A V3 might be a good choice. Runs on either AA or 14500 battery. Has a sub-lumen firefly mode for preserving night vision, and goes up to 200 lumens with a AA battery. I don't know how much brighter it would be with a 14500 battery, but you can typically expect two to three times brighter, though with shorter run times. 200 lumens is typically enough for most tasks, though you might appreciate the extra brightness if you were looking around outdoors.

18650 Lights

If you're willing to go up to an 18650 sized light, the Thrunite TC15 would likely be a great choice. It gets incredibly bright for a 1x 18650 light, at up to 2300 lumens, but has well spaced lower modes for everyday use as well. It looks like currently only the cool white version is available on Amazon it. Most people, myself included, prefer neutral to warm white because it looks better, and produces less backscatter in particulates in the air.

I think a little more information about your intended use of the light and how you'd like to carry it would help us make good recommendations. Good luck on the search!

EDIT: Also, another user asked a good question about what you mean by "rechargeable." Do you mean that you just plug the light in without taking the battery out, or do you mean the battery is rechargeable and you can put it in a charger? There are plenty of excellent chargers at places like illumn.com that will open up a whole new realm of possibilities for flashlights, so the small up-front investment is usually worth it.

You might consider putting together a small first aid kit with basic boo boo supplies and some OTC medicine, should be pretty light weight. I'd also add some kind of flashlight. I EDC this Olight keychain flashlight, which is one of the lightest out there while throwing a decent amount of light (~90 lumens).

u/inheritthefire · 1 pointr/preppers

I previously carried the Olight i3e and loved it. Very small, AAA, and very bright.
I thought I lost it, and was gifted the Olight S1R as a replacement. I've since found my i3e, but I still carry the S1R instead - it is an amazing little flashlight.

Using floss might work to bulk up the O-ring, but it'll remove any water resistance that might be left. Finding a fresh or slightly larger O-ring would be more reliable.

If you haven't done so, you should post on /r/flashlight using the guided request form to specify what you're looking for in a flashlight. There are literally thousands of flashlights to choose from, but if you know what features you're looking for or avoiding, we can help you narrow that down quickly. You might start with something cheap but well-made like the Olight i3e.

u/John_the_Piper · 1 pointr/EDC

Alright, I suggest something like this. It's has 900 lumens, it's IP65, it has a rechargeable battery, it has a head that appears to be capable of delivering impacts, and at $25 USD, it is easily replaceable.

It is an US link though, so you may want to find the Canadian equivalent of it.

u/mcfarlie6996 · 1 pointr/flashlight

WOWTAC A1S BSS TAC V2 and swap out the crenulated bezel for the red lens.

u/ringo_24601 · 1 pointr/flashlight

The A1S has twice the lumens output as the A1

I like my A1S, it's my first 'proper' flashlight

There is also the A1S BSS TAC - https://www.amazon.com/WOWTAC-Flashlight-Pocket-Sized-Resistant-Outdoors/dp/B07567K2QC/

u/BirdTog · 1 pointr/flashlight

>From the doorway (Turns into a shitshow if I need to go in with lights out and whatnot) I am just looking to see that they are there, and ideally they are alright.

I incorrectly assumed that you had to go in and do a closer check like acute care facilities do.

> my old flashlight that was red was really bright and I'd just shine it on the ceiling and it'd light up the whole room.

With that in mind, the Nitecore I recommended earlier probably won't work for you since the red LED in it is pretty low power. You might be better off getting a Solarforce L2M host (runs 18650, or can run stubby with 18350 with the extension tube removed) and a red LED drop in like this one from KAI Domain.

Or just get a white light that will take a screw in or slip on red filter, like Fenixes linked by u/ImALittleCrackpot. The Wowtac A1S BSS includes a screw in red filter and is complete package for $40.

I hope this helps you find the right light or at least gets you going in the right direction.

Haikelite MT07S:

https://hesaidshesaidsales.com/shop?olsPage=products%2Fhaikelite-mto7s-702-version

I would recommend the MT07S, since it has the most stable brightness as the battery drains, and a still good user interface.

At 4500 lumens, it should be bright enough.

There are some incredible lights out there not only much smaller than what you've got but significantly more powerful. Thrunite has a bundle deal on their amazing TC12 w/XP-L where you get the light with built-in charging and battery for $60 or Sofirn's SP32A v2.0 bundle is only $30 from Amazon. They are both top-notch quality at 1/2 the cost of olight and some of the other big names. Go with a neutral color, you won't be disappointed!

Woooo!

Not sure how the $15 limit on international shipping applies, is it included in the $52 or on top of that (total of $67)? Asking because I couldn't find anything with shipping under $15 to Finland..

Anyways, If I limit to max of $52, this Nitecore Tini fits the bill at $29.99 and $19.00 shipping (total: $48.99): https://www.amazon.com/NITECORE-Metallic-Rechargeable-Keychain-Eco-Sensa/dp/B077PC43TC/?tag=parametrek-20

If the total limit is $67, I have a hard time choosing between the Rovyvon Aurora A8 and Nitecore NU25, but maybe the hiker in me would approve the headlamp more as I already have a pretty good EDC in the Nitecore Tip CRI.. So, NU25, $36.95 and $27.26 shipping (total $64.21): https://www.amazon.com/Nitecore-NU25-Rechargeable-Headlamp-Yellow/dp/B078PH9DCB/?tag=parametrek-20

Edit: Actually looks like if you go down enough in price, so does the shipping. As I don't have any AAA lights, the Thrunite Ti3 NW might be interesting.. $13.95 and $13.17 shipping: https://www.amazon.com/ThruNite-Ti3-XP-G2-Neutral-White/dp/B00EC0FY1O/?tag=parametrek-20
