I think you mean Ker Plunk

A friend of mine working for Hasbro told me that their current design goals for deciding which projects to green light is to look at it, and if it seems like it will result in a potential viral youtube video, then it's a go. This leads them to making games like Don't step in the poop. According to my friend, this strategy seems to be working for them.

Even with my younger students, I try to avoid simple "give-and-go" rewards (e.g. trophies, etc.) because I don't find them very motivating. Stars are essentially the same thing, and I don't really see the point.

My most successful rewards are interactive. I know this can be challenging due to time restraints - it's hard to teach a student a game or explain something too complex. I have found the easiest way to engage a student is to offer them choices within their reward.

Depending how often I see the student, their gender, and their VIPKid level, I offer students 2-3 options for rewards. My most popular rewards:

Treats for the household pet

Choices: Different colored/shaped treats

My pet dog and rats are now well accustomed to the sound of my "Teacher" voice and come running when I say "It's time for a treat!" I bought some colorful and fun shaped treats (stars, etc.) and students can choose which one they want to feed to the pets. Just make sure this is pretty limited with low calorie treats, because you don't want your pets getting fat! I pretty much reserve this for my regulars, and only for the regulars who seem to really enjoy it. I've actually received multiple requests from parents in the feedback to continue with this because the students talk to their parents about it after the lesson.

Colorforms and Sticker Faces

Choices: Infinite combination of stickers

This is hands down my most popular reward for girls. It's a lot more cost effective to laminate these stickers/face templates, glue magnets to the back, and re-use them on a baking sheet each time. For each reward, I use TPR and say, "Can you choose body part for your girl?" Then I will point to each option and say, "1, 2, 3, or 4?" They get the picture very quickly. There are other sticker templates you can purchase including re-usable sticker kits, etc. The faces are the most popular, however.

Alligator Game (or other similar options)

Choices: Which tooth

This game gets a lot of reactions from students, especially if you make a big deal about it. On the reward slide, I will say something like: "This is the Alligator Game. (Open alligator mouth.) You (point to student) pick a tooth (press on all the teeth until the jaws snap), and one of them bites the teacher! OUCH!" When they get a reward, I point to each tooth instruct the student to say STOP (use TPR) when they are ready. Every time they select a tooth, I make a big deal of looking anxious and terrified, then wiping my forehead and giving a big sigh of relief if it doesn't bite me. They love it.

There are lots of options like this as well. I see lots of things that give me ideas just browsing on Amazon (e.g. Pop the Pig, Shark Bite).

Cootie Bug

Choices: Different shaped/colored body parts

Here's the link for this reward. This one is for slightly younger students, but honestly most of my students enjoy it. On the reward slide, I will say, "We are going to build a Cootie Bug (point to picture on game card). What color body (TPR, point to body) would you like? Blue, purple, red, or green?" This game comes with a neat little die with different body parts on each side. When it comes time to reward the kids, I put the die in a clear jar and shake it and tell the students to say stop when they're ready. The students can choose which style of leg, head, antenna, eyes, and mouth they want.

There are lots of options here. Get creative, go to the toy store. See what weird games (usually I look for simple games aged 3-5) and see if you can adapt it to your reward. All the rewards I suggested cost around $20 (combined) and my rewards get a lot of mentions in the feedback. Let me know your thoughts and if you have any other questions! Good luck!

Hasbro is making them. The company that makes the regular Jenga.

I remember it being about an hour long at the very most. I would equate it to being a film in the same vein as Olive the other reigndeer or Scary God Mother. A badly animated straight to TV movie of the early 2000s/late 90s. As for the plot it was something super stereotypical. I think a group of 3 (?) aliens came to earth and crash landed. I specifically remember them landing in an ice cream freezer for some reason, like the kind you see in a gas station. I remember a young boy finds them somehow and I THINK he tries to get them back home. The MOST vivid scene is the jack rock scene where the aliens use jacks to pop someone’s tires.

Edit: more details

Pop the Pig is a childs game. Where you feed a pig until its jacket pops open.

A blast from the past and now I feel the need to order it.

Kerplunk

Also Jenga, Tiddlywinks and Battle Ship.

There's a bunch of card games I enjoy too. Even simple ones like War, Old Maid and Go Fish.

Well thank you, very much. I genuinely appreciate your words. I try very hard to make her childhood fun and filled with happy memories with her family. I personally still would like her to spend a bit less time with the tech but I also see that it can (sometimes, not always) be educational.

I will link the game below, but still suggest that this game be played without the “box game” just because it’s more fun, sometimes we even cut out paper bits in different sizes and shapes to make it more challenging (and easier for Mom (me) to see where the “Lava” is)

So none of this while at the clinic

Man, pricing might be off, the amount of work for this is staggering too. I'm not a chess player, but I'm guessing six molds to make the pieces.
I've made several 2 piece molds with the final products being hollow. They require a nice plug with a lot of waxing and no negatives. I used to make the original out of foam, layered with glass, sanded smooth, and then sprayed with an automotive primer and sanded. I made my molds at least a 1/4" thick, which for you just having to pull a few pieces, you could get away with skinnier molds. If you've never done molds before, it's a different beast than laying glass or carbon, gel coat isn't very forgiving in some aspects either.

A big problem I see is the sheer size you're going for, a few feet tall means that you are going to be trying to lay resin up inside the mold from the bottom, unless you have serious monkey arms or a chop gun with a roller on an extension I don't see it happening unless you make the mold in four pieces (more work).

I'm all for diy, but even with a year of time it's a big challenge, and that's assuming every mold turns out right and all the parts from the molds turn out right. I saw something similar to these at the mall, maybe pick something up like this and then work on building the chessboard?

The only other thing I would suggest would be just to make all your plugs out of foam and use as one off pieces without making molds, then glass over them, sand, bondo and paint. The mold making seems like a lot of work to get one or two pieces out of them. I guess you could do a cheapy mold too, basically take the part that you have to replicate the most and make a mold of just one half. Then you could do some pva in the mold and pour foam in it. Cut the foam flush with parting flange and joing the two halves together and then glass and sand and finish.

If you're looking to publish, it could be tricky with existing geek trivia games out there:

In addition to each geekdom having one or more of it's own trivia games. Choosing to buy movement or items sounds like a fun twist though, and I wish you luck on the journey!

It's like playing Kerplunk - you might be able to eliminate any one species at the bottom of the ladder but sooner or later meddling with the system will crash it.

The more the merrier.

Your Dad.

They can be a little more pricey, but maybe a nice leather roll kit for his tools?
I don't know what his favorite Beatles song is, but can't go wrong with a classic.

This might be a terrible assumption on my part, but I'm guessing he plays classic guitar and not electric. As somebody who likes to put stuff together, maybe he would like a guitar blueprint? If he plays electrical, they have those too on the same site.

So depending on what kind of alcohol, there are a lot of really cool gifts out there specific to they type of alcohol. Like funky, but functional glasses, whiskey stones, flasks etc. As far of sci fi, there is a lot of stuff out there. Any good Star Trek fan should have at least one insignia, thought it might be good to know which Star Trek he likes the most, classic, TNG, Deep Space, the new movies.

Bad but great sci fi movies: Critters, Stung, Black Sheep. If your local film movie theater has a bad movies night, maybe get him some tickets. But keep in mind, whatever you give him, your sister is going to have to live with too. AKA don't piss your sister off by giving him any of these.

Fun game he might also like, you all like to play games together. My husband and I play it sometime for giggles.

The few truck drivers I know really love audiobooks. A good audiobook is like the gift that keeps on giving. The Dresden Files books read by James Marsters is still one of my favorite audiobooks ever, cover fantasy, and witty, so witty. Along with Ready Player One read by Wil Wheaton. If you want something that covers a lot of genres, Dangerous Women anthology is wonderful and you get a lot of people reading short stories.

Peter Sellers is amazing. If he doesn't already have The Party or Being There on dvd, get them for him. Or even The Life and Death of Peter Sellers. Geoffrey Rush is so amazing in that film.

Of course I personally want to give all truck driver this or this, but I just love Jack Burton.

This is just what I got off the top of my head.

Probably because now you can play GIANT Jenga

I've done a bunch of warm-up games, but never a game mid workout. Sounds like it could be potentially hard to coordinate if you're limited to space and have a large groups doing both workout and game.

Here's an idea to try out. A large scale version of Connect Four. Two teams and you can only place a game piece after your team has completed a round or set of the WOD.

If you don't want to buy a large version of the game, I'm sure you could draw out a board on gym floor mats with color chalk.

A variation of Ker Plunk?

u/TopDogChick · 1 pointr/dreadrpg

If you want to do a shorter dread game, I think you can generate similar tension if you use a game that requires less pulls. I've thought about the possibility of using Kerplunk as a replacement for the jenga tower, but it would result in much less pulls before death. Don't break the ice would also be pretty great for short game, especially one set in a cold climate.

As far as having shorter stories, try drawing your inspiration from cartoons or creepypastas even. Cartoons are a well laid out story that can't fill more than 15 minutes of time. Alternatively, short grimm brother stories can also make excellent dread campaigns. Perhaps the players are chilling at a cousin's cabin when they realize that the cabin is made of gingerbread. Then the witch comes home. Or perhaps the baba yaga's bird-legged house walks by.

Because dread is so flexible, I think there are definitely some ways you can cut the timing down to 20 minutes without having to make too many sacrifices.

Apparently there's already a game called this? Is that gonna cause problems or is it okay? I'm not versed in board game law 🤔

Here in coastal Oregon, where we often play giant chess, we would kick a guy's ass if he suggested a move!

(That is a true statement, except that we don't play giant chess here. I might get a set...)
