Great topic!

Something purely functional that helped me out a lot was to add a lot more light to my living space. I'm in the US, so we've got some pretty short days now (though certainly they're even shorter in Canada, Europe, and other countries at northern latitudes.). Having lights on at sunset (which can be around 4:30pm-5:00pm or so right now) until bedtime really helped keep my energy up through the evening, and then let me get a good night's sleep when I turned them off and went to bed.

I found 2700K temperature color bulbs to be the best looking by far. Floor lamps with indirect light (i.e., the bulb is obscured) were good to have, as well as additional task/accent lights. I bought enough lamps so that I felt awake inside even after dark. So I'd put 2-3 floor lamps in the living room, along with 2-3 accent lights and maybe a task lamp. Similar, though slightly scaled down, for the bedroom.

A few floor lamps I liked:

You have a lot of small pieces in the space - if you want sleek, simplify. I suggest getting two more of the tv cube stands and bunch all three together. Now you have a long tv "console" and storage. You can migrate the printer and everything else on the short black shelf onto/into the cubes and eliminate that shelf from the space entirely. Maybe put the printer on the side closest to what I assume is the dining table so nobody has to cross over the tv if someone else is watching it. There are also cube baskets/bins you can get to put in some of those shelves to hide some of the clutter.

I agree on the floor lamp in the corner. Try to get something in brushed nickel/silver/iron Example 1 Example 2 - you have enough black and i think straight chrome would stand out too much. No shelf lamps or spider lamps. If you need that trashcan in the living room, try to hide it next to the lamp in the corner, or between the shoe rack and the wall.

The size of the rug is good but the pattern/color is eh. If you replace it, don't get anything smaller than that (5x7 I assume?), and maybe get something with a bit of color. If you like the red pillow, look for a rug with some red. Example 1 Example 2. If you're not going red, blues and greens would look good too. Low pile and polyester or better, polypropylene are your friends for college (well, anytime) rugs - low maintenance and easy to clean! Wool rugs can be like having an inanimate dog - very nice to look at but the shedding is not so great. If you don't mind that maintenance then go nuts.

I also agree on the coffee table - the end table probably isn't super functional for you. If you can, find something that has black and brown (example) so you can keep the end table at the end of the sofa while making it match your tv stand. Other things: If you need the woven cube storage in that room, try to bunch it on the dining table side of the TV stand. If the back of the sofa feels too bare after that, a slim console table would be a good idea - then you have somewhere to drop keys and a secondary drink/snack/etc surface. Wall art of course, be it pictures or just framed art on the big wall by the door. Maybe do 3 larger pictures/art pieces or a collage of different art in matching frames.

Lamp over a bucket of water works great. They just fly in. I put in some extra olive oil and soap to make sure they stay in there.

A reading lamp seems to work best. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Daylight-Naturalight-Hobby-Floor-Lamp/dp/B0021GKBT6/ref=sr_1_12?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1371560683&sr=1-12&keywords=27w+reading+lamp

I think this style would go well, but you'd need to find a black base instead of the silver since you don't have silver anywhere else.

This might be a bit big for your space, but has the colors.

Alternatively, something like this or this has a nice big lamp shade which will help wash the whole room with light as opposed to a specific direction (reading light).

I use a couple of floor lamps in my basement. The type of floor lamp that has a decent horizontal reach from the base. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Brightech-Hudson-Living-Hanging-Brushed/dp/B077NPBGSW

u/jackjackj8ck · 2 pointsr/DesignMyRoom

Got itttt

I think if you’re keeping your tv placed there, you should replace the tables on either side of it w 2 side tables that match each other and are either white/light stain wood or glass/metal

The lamps are kind of bulky in general, I wonder if it’d be more efficient to have a standing lamp. I got this one from Amazon and it’s really bright

Again w your bedroom, I’d put down an extra large area rug to cover up as much of that brown carpet as possible. And change the curtains for something much lighter as well as the bedspread.

I think if you replace the floor lamp with one of these boxy ones it would look great next to the painting and the cat tower. It also diffuses the light differently. I have the lamp you have and I don't like how it lights the room unevenly. (Alternative lamp)

u/leesajane · 2 pointsr/houseplants

Here's the same lamp, but cheaper. I own that one and it's great. I've got a couple of the clip on red/blue lights from Amazon as well, but that big one is my favorite-- it's easy to move around and it kind of blends in as furniture.

u/ItsACharlieDay · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

A fellow redditor got this for me and it is great. You can store stuff in the drawer, put trinkets on the shelves, and use it as a light for the room to set the mood.

u/Dragonfly518 · 2 pointsr/CrossStitch

Here is an awesome lamp for about the price of one at a craft store. I have this one, it's ridiculously heavy and sturdy. I've used the light for 15-20 hours a week for over a year, no sign of the bulb aging at all.

u/heikurashi · 2 pointsr/CrossStitch

I use this and absolutely love it.

u/themomentisme · 2 pointsr/1200isplenty

This is the one I got. It's not advertised to help with SAD, but I find it to be great. Lavish Home (72-0890) 5 Feet Sunlight Floor Lamp With Adjustable Gooseneck - Black https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B008E6BR36/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_XYg-Bb1BD9FGF

I have the same ones

I have the 3 in 1 ottlite https://www.amazon.com/OttLite-K94CP3-Adjustable-Height-Magnifier-Champagne/dp/B002CWPQ7Q I use it as a floorlamp, but its got a clamp thing and the 3 bit part detaches from the leg to create a clamp table lamp. Or take the leg off and put the 3 bit in the base for another table lamp.

u/JisaacT124 · 2 pointsr/minipainting

I had the magnifying glasses headset when I first started out but I didn't continue with it. It would strain my eyes and hurt my head as i would have to tighten it quite a bit to keep it on my head successfully. I have another friend who loves it. It's up to you but I personally couldn't use it. I use this hobby light most of the time.

I also use a magnifying light very similar to this one if I really need to get up close and personal or if the shadows cast off of the other light bother me.

Yes it’s more expensive but it is worth every penny and your eyes will thank you.

Yes! I just got it and I love it! It’s from Amazon

u/appmapper · 1 pointr/malelivingspace

I had the same issue. Got a few floor lamps, and some uplights to stick behind furniture.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079G7V8HS/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_wGisDbJR94FA0

This guy gets complimented all the time and I'm usually asked where I got it from.

u/sonsofaureus · 1 pointr/Workspaces

More warm lighting? Some standing halogen lamps maybe?

u/Tdawg90 · 1 pointr/HomeDecorating

I'll 3rd the wall mount. Worth every penny. Costco is where I've been getting mine.

Then I'd actually do a corner shelving unit. something like this

With the TV off the ground and the corner shelf, you'll have much more space. You can then put a lamp on the shelf, or get something like this

Accent floor lights have the added benefit of lighting the wall and ceiling.

As for the corner, I agree arc lights are the way to go. Check out this one With multiple heads you could aim one or two at the ceiling

Question for you - why do you think that's similar? I need to figure out how to convey that to people. You're the third person to google that lamp and show it. It would really help me out if you told me exactly what made you think they were comparable.

___

To respond to your question:

It is not the same, at all. It's like comparing a night light to a light bulb. Or it's like a single lightbulb vs opening a window on a bright day.

That lamp is 3000 lumens, this one is 7000 lumens, and when you experience it, it feels like much more than twice the light. It has no dimming options really, pretty much just on and off. And the lighting casts shadows and is uneven. I have that lamp, it broke and I had to tape it together.

That lamp is compared in the page I linked to, take a look. It's hard to clearly convey through an image.

The 6000 lumen halogen lamps were the most popular floor lamps ever. When they were banned in the mid-90s, they were allowed to have a 3000 lumen halogen bulb. No one bought those, because they provided very little light, like the one you're showing. No lamp has gone over 3000 lumens for 20 years.

Try it yourself - buy a 180w halogen floor lamp with a legal 3000 lumen bulb, and then buy a 300w, 6000 lumen bulb, and compare. Anyone who experienced those lamps in the mid-90s would know what I'm talking about. Many people wondered where they went.

I'm imaging that there is a triangular space directly behind the headboard ("The top of my bed is in a corner of room such that it's against two walls"). How about putting either an arc lamp or an adjustable floor lamp in that space?

It's this: https://www.amazon.com/Coaster-901199-Contemporary-Lamp-Chrome/dp/B00RHJIVLW so the round base version.

The lamp itself is fine, especially for $90.. but if I could go back, I'd spend the $400+ on a better repro with the rectangular slab + sleeker looking stem + more accurate shade. In fact, I will probably 'upgrade' down the road.

I almost bought that one, but then I saw this one and liked the height, but are LEDs better than fluorescent? So many varying answers.

u/injuredmother · 0 pointsr/malelivingspace

This is what I would personally do..... take it how you will!

Where your current lamp is in that corner, I would do something like this

With that I would get the article nova if you're into sectionals, if not then an article sven if that's what you're into!

I would personally switch out the rug BUT if that's what you like, then keep it! i see one of your paintings have a splash of blue, grey and blue go extremely well together (in my opinion) so perhaps you can get throw decorative pillows in a light-ish blue color to add some color to the room.
