WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO PENS ARE MY JAM.

i love rollerballs. they're so smooth and sexy. the pilot g2 is my standby. i have a billion of them.

not really a rollerball but an "emulsion" pen, but i also like the zebra z mulsion pen. it has more of a ballpoint feel but it's smooth like a rollerball. very satisfying to write with.

ballpoint pens, i like the pilot easytouch. NOT THE RETRACTABLE VERSION. i don't know why, but it's just not the same as the capped version. trust me on this.

for colorful pens, i like the zebra sarasa clip. it's a micro-gel pen, so very smooth but not as glide-y as a rollerball.

i also like fountain pens. the pilot metropolitan is a very nice "starter" fountain pen. it's not as delicate as some of the other "starter" fountain pens, but it's a solid writer and it has a really nice metal body that feels all weighty.

i also like the nemosine singularity and the nemosine fission. i think the nemosine nibs are a bit sexier than the pilot metropolitan's, but the pilot is pretty cheap (about half the price of these pens).

and finally, my favorite throwaway pens are papermate write bros.

Amazon Pilot Varsity 12pk. Seems to fit your price point for the ones you like.

u/elwood2cool · 19 pointsr/Psychiatry

If you want to buy them something they'll use on a regular basis, try a nice pen. Psych tends to be a specialty where handwritten notes are still the norm and having a nice pen to write them with is an enjoyable experience.

Here's my recommendations:

Platinum 3776, Black, Medium Nib

This plus the Converter is under $70 for a great pen with a gold nib, and cap that will keep the pen from drying out for over a year.

u/superoblivionbread · 13 pointsr/fountainpens

Pilot E95 is a really pretty pen. It's not pink, though, but is different and classy. Takes the con40 converter which isn't optimal but works.

Rohrer and Klinger Cassia has pretty much become my favorite non-blue/black ink of all time. That purple is worthy of consideration.

u/Dak_Ink · 10 pointsr/fountainpens

There is only the Platinum proprietary converter. Nothing else fits. I think there is a choice between a gold and silver version.

Some quick questions, do you write really small now?

Most of the engineers I know do write small, which is why I ask. /u/the_illest does this joke you see here every time this question is asked, but it is a good recommendation to start. I personally recommend the Pilot Metropolitan over the Lamy Safari, I think it is a nicer pen to use, and the I believe the nib is better. If you write fine, you might be better off going to Goulet and getting the new model in fine, than buying the medium nib on Amazon. If you write really small, I really like the Metropolitan with the nib from the Pilot penmanship swapped onto it. The link here is more than I spent on the penmanship, if you search you can find them cheaper (I think on Amazon sometimes, I got two for that price). The Japanese EF nib is closer to a western UEF nib (the medium on the Metro is very close to an EF on the Safari). The line is very thin, and comfortable if you are used to writing small with a mechanical pencil.

With this, pick up a bottle of Noodler's black , and you will be set.

Now, to deviate a little from the standard answers. If you want something a little different, the Nemosine Singularity is an good intro pen that has gotten a lot of good feedback.

For a cheaper alternative, but usually only in a medium nib, the Jinhao x750 or x450 are big pens that make a statement (Amazon has sellers that ship these from China, Goulet pens carries them for $10 in stock).

There are a few others on Amazon that people like in the starting range, Parker, Scheaffer, etc that some like, but generally, the popular ones are the Metropolitan and Safari.

Nice pen. But just FYI, I can get the same exact new pen sent to me in 2 days for $68:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B1N90W4/

It's tough to make up for the poor Canadian exchange rate and the low cost of gray market pens (if you paid full price from an authorized dealer).

Good luck with your sale.

u/ironhelixx · 8 pointsr/fountainpens

I second the Jinhao x750 suggestion, and would also suggest an even slightly larger pen that is in your budget, the Jinhao x159. I have really enjoyed both of them.

u/jhbrock · 7 pointsr/fountainpens

Hi all!

This is being cross-posted from /r/PenmanshipPorn upon suggestion.

In case you're curious...

The pens are, from top to bottom:

  1. Manuscript Master Italic Pen 1.1 mm running Noodler's Apache Sunset

  2. Jinhao X750 - with a Knox 1.1 mm Italic stub running J. Herbin's Gris Nuage

  3. TWSBI Eco 1.1 mm Italic stub running a mixture of Noodler's Apache Sunset and Cayenne

  4. Pilot Metropolitan with a 1.1 mm Italic stub nib from a Pilot Plumix running Noodler's Antietam ink.

  5. Manuscript Beginners Pen with an Extra Fine nib and running generic black ink.

The paper is a Clairefontaine French Ruled pad
u/asciiaardvark · 7 pointsr/fountainpens

The only gold nibs I can think of cheaper than that are:

  • Platinum PTL-5000A ($41 on Amazon)
  • Pilot Seremo/Celemo (currently $70+ on Amazon but the camel says $40-50 is more common)

I don't have experience with them. But my 3776 is a fantastic pen.

Start with this. Add the 25 international cartridges for 4 dollars. If you like it you can either move on to something more expensive, or just add a Goulet #6 nib (15 dollars) and a better converter (6 dollars), and get some interesting inks.

u/vic06 · 5 pointsr/pens

I believe it's this one. There's a newer version with red and white tips.

u/invisiblebob8616 · 5 pointsr/fountainpens

I'd pick up a Platinum 3776 Chartres Blue and a bottle of Noodler's Bad Belted Kingfisher. Great looking pen that won't dry out even if you don't use it for a long time, and an ink that is as permanent as permanent gets. Just be warned that you might not be able to use blue ink on certain documents. I showed up to sign my marriage license with [[Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo]] and they wouldn't let me because it had to be black ink. :(

u/dragonfly224 · 5 pointsr/fountainpens

Jinhao x750 with a zebra g nib. This is really your only option other than an Ahab with a modification like this which I've done myself and is amazing but you do need a dremel (go slow). 10/10

u/hey_peace · 4 pointsr/fountainpens

Depending where you get it a pilot kakuno is around 10 bucks.
Pilot Kakuno Fine-Nib Fountain Pen, White Body Soft Blue Cap Body (FKA-1SR-SLF) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IOOOBU4/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_4BlvDbF12QS6W
It's fine and smooth like the metro but lighter so it's easier to write for a longer period of time.

u/beltaine · 4 pointsr/secretsanta

Oooh, depends on what you're looking for, my friend! However, all my starter pens were under $35 with my favorite being the Pilot Metropolitan ($15). It writes very well and it's a great starter pen!My next suggestions would be: LAMY Safari Pen and TWSBI Eco Demonstrator. These are fun, come in fun colors or can be see-through which is neat cause then you can see the ink!

Also take into consideration nib sizes (Fine being thin lines and more tactile, and Medium+ having thicker, "wetter" lines). 🎆🎇

u/ehsu · 4 pointsr/malefashionadvice

If you can do $125, check out the Lamy 2000. For the price, I think it has a good combination of practicality and "wow, this is nice" due to its iconic design.

u/deloreantrails · 4 pointsr/Pen_Swap

There's one for $83 shipped on Amazon Warehouse Deals if you do.

u/cryptocorianderseeds · 3 pointsr/fountainpens

In the price range and (presumably) for the purpose of being solid and portable, I'd suggest something like a Pilot Prera. They're very sturdy, have a really good size when posted, and the non-demonstrator versions actually look very clean and professional. In my opinion the nibs are pretty stellar, too.

How about some rusty calligraphy?

Get paper that's specifically used for ink, like Rhodia or Clairefontaine notebooks, because ink sits on top of that type of paper rather than being absorbed and causing bleeding (which there is a little bit of in my image, because it's an old Beinfang sketch book).

Replacable pen nibs are cheaper BY FAR than a pen with a nib that you can't change out.

If you use a fountain pen, make sure it's refillable. Lamy Safari pens use a replaceable cartridge, but you can get a converter for them that you can put any kind of ink in that you want.

I don't own any fancy pens though, I just use a plastic Speedball calligraphy stylus and replaceable nibs (all of the above were done using a C-4 nib cause it's the only one my kids haven't stolen and lost). Most nibs are less than $5 and the majority of those are under $2.

Flashlight: Nitecore TIP

Knife: Byrd Cara Cara

Pen: Pilot Kakuno

More realistically, I would DIY the wallet with a $10 piece of tooling leather, and get a better knife like a Spyderco Efficient. This would put me a couple dollars over, so swap the pen for a Zebra F701. Total:$100.42

Both the Platinum 3776 (black and gold version) and the Pilot 74 can be purchased on Amazon for about $80. Both are available with soft nibs (I prefer the soft fine) which will give you a small amount of line variation, and both are usually either available with Amazon prime 2-day shipping or free standard shipping. The 3776 has the cool slip and seal technology to keep the nib from drying out even when it sits unused for long periods of time and the Pilot 74 has the ability to use the spiffy (and huge capacity) CON-70 converter.

Streamlight Stylus - surprisingly bright little flashlight that can fit in breast pocket. Don't use as a primary flashlight but if your primary flashlight fails, you always have a backup on you.

If you're OK with a lightweight pen then I would recommend the Platinum PLT-5000a. It's been my daily carry for a while and it looks as good as when I first got it, plus its got a very nice 14k nib. You do need a proprietary converter, but even with that you should still be within budget.

If you want a metal body you could try the Jinhao X750. You could also look at a Conklin Herringbone, or the Platinum Procyon, but I don't have any personal experience with them.

u/innocentius-1 · 3 pointsr/fountainpens

Actually, no. Even though most retailers based in the US give you options with a price range of upper $150, you can still buy gold nib pens with relatively low price if you are willing to do some research.

For example: https://www.amazon.com/Platinum-Fountain-PTL-5000A-point-Black/dp/B004BA69XW

Amazon is a strange and versatile place. Many relatively cheap gold nib fountain pens could be found there. Try to search for Pilot Custom 74, Wing Sung 698 14K, Platinum 3776 Century. These should all be in your price range. Choose your seller carefully, though.

The Pilot Celemo (sometimes spelled Seremo on Amazon) and the Platinum PTL5000 are a bit over your price range at a bit under USD 50, but both are black with gold trim and have 14K gold nibs. I think you might like them.

It looks like he’s using this pen nib holder: https://www.amazon.com.au/Tachikawa-Comic-Holder-Model-T-40/dp/B000UF2774 , but I’m not sure about the nib, possibly a Maru (Mapping) one. But, again, I’m not entirely sure

u/lucrosus · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

I was just as scared as you are. I am currently a student (high school albeit), and I was extremely worried about the clip being in the way. I bit the bullet, and it is easily one of the nicest—if not the nicest nib I own. The clip has not yet been a problem for me, I just shift my grip around it. I highly recommend the Kasuri (carbonesque) finish as well. Not only is it gorgeous, but it also has a good texture to it so that if you get oily hands, you'll still be able to grip the pen without slipping. Also, the new Matte Blue version from Goulet Pens looks fantastic (although I am not sure about the texture and grip). The fine nib is perfect for schoolwork writing (slim enough for math and very smooth). I also like a fine nib, and it's one of my favorites. It is roughly the size of a Lamy EF. However, do not fall into the trick and think that the VP M = Lamy F. It does not—it is nearly a true western nib, so I don't recommend it. I don't have much experience with the loom, except it is a very good pen from what I have heard.

Also, if you're really scared about the clip, I recommend taking a look at a Platinum #3776 Century (Soft fine or fine, possibly a medium -- I'm getting one this evening so I'll keep you posted), or a Pilot Custom 74 or Heritage 91 (soft fine or fine.) I have a black and gold Japanese sf Import that I bought from Japan, but it seems that they have a soft fine on Amazon. Mine just arrived, and the line variation is insane. I can get anywhere from a western EF to a BB without much effort. (link here).

Hope this helps.

u/Bearnadette · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

Thanks, guys! :) I'm cleaning both the fine nib that the pen came with, and the broad replacement nib, and will examine them tomorrow under a magnifying glass.

I also just bought a Jinhao for $2.95 from Amazon. As a backup.

http://www.amazon.com/JinHao-X750-Silver-Fountain-Pen/dp/B00CC76756?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

Finally, an inexpensive pen with no "gold" trim, that also isn't made out of plastic. I have high hopes for this one! :)

u/PrettyLittleBird · 2 pointsr/LifeProTips

I have messy handwriting AND I like to write very very small. When I was in college I quickly realized that it was easiest for me to write quickly and legibly in small caps, so that's what I do now. It's very neat and tidy, other people can read my tiny writing, and I can do it about as quickly as cursive.

Edit:

I also ONLY write with fountain pens now. I press down very hard otherwise, which hurts my hand and makes my writing worse. Varsity sells disposable fountain pens for about $5, and I buy them at Hobby Lobby with 40% off coupons every once in a while. Having a pen that doesn't require pressure helped immensely with the speed and flow of my writing.

You can get them for $3.25 with free shipping on Amazon.

Lamy 2000- piston-filler with a 14kt gold nib

Sailor 1911 Standard- a cartridge/converter pen with a 14kt gold nib available in several specialty sizes

Visconti Rembrandt- a cartridge/converter pen with an extremely smooth and wet steel nib

Pilot Vanishing Point- a cartridge/converter pen with an 18kt gold nib available in many different finishes

Pilot Falcon- a cartridge/converter pen with a 14kt gold semi-flexible nib

Pelikan M200 - a piston filler with a steel nib; you can buy a 14kt gold nib for this pen for about $160

Levenger True Writer Select- a cartridge/converter pen with a steel nib

Any regular production Edison pens- cartridge/converter pens with steel nibs; they're turned by hand and available in many different models and acrylics

Most of these are between $100 and $150, so you could also pick up a few inks or some paper. If I had $200 to spend right now, I would buy either a Lamy 2000 with a double broad nib (only available in Europe) or a Sailor 1911 Standard with a music nib.

EDIT: Added links and descriptions

Yes to both. NID is New Ink Day. Similarly, NPD is New Pen Day.

The Lamy Safari doesn’t (typically) come with an ink converter though, which you need in order to be able to use bottled ink (the Kon Peki). https://www.amazon.com/Lamy-Safari-Converter-Z24-z24-l/dp/B0019W4EIW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1539817790&sr=8-2&keywords=lamy+safari+converter

If you are just starting out then I would recommend the Kuretake No 13. It is a decent brush that can use Platinum converters.

Now not only is it a good starter brush pen that is refillable. This pen can also fit the natural sable hair brush refills if you care to upgrade without having to pay out for the Kuretake No 40/50 pen.

Here is a gallery from a past post where I used the natural brush heads in kuretake pens to give you an example. https://imgur.com/a/pBpHt#4

And lastly you really don't need a converter unless you really want to use them. Just syringe refill the cartridges when they are empty.

  • Sailor HighAce Neo is the finest line I've ever seen, except for...

  • Hero 9296, but QC is really hit-or-miss with that guy. There's also...

  • Pilot Penmanship, which is an EF nib that can fit into a Metro body, if you want something more durable (or that can clip).

Oh, also: When I want to write an even finer line, I just rotate the pen and write with the nib upside-down. Something feels existentially wrong about it to me, but it gets the job done.

The pilot varsity also comes in a dozen pack, that way you can get 12 of a particular color.

http://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Varsity-Disposable-Fountain-90010/dp/B001GAOTXC

I think that varsities produce a smoother feel on paper owing to the broader nib and Pilot having very consistent quality. The problem I can see is that the Varsities are a bit broad and wet for school paper. You may end up with people getting the idea that fountain pens being excessively broad and prone to feathering.

One thing you can do is get a ream of HP 24# laserjet paper. That stuff is quite affordable, ink resistant and feels smooth when writing on it.

Reddit's got me wanting to try fountain pens, so I'm ordering one to give it a shot. This refillable ink cartridge is on my list of things to get soon.

FYI, for those curious, I'm looking at getting this Lamy pen as my starter!

u/whichversionofme · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

Just a few comments/suggestions :)

I would recommend the Pilot Metropolitan as a starter, for around the price of the Plasir it is very reliable, smooth writer, and much easier to clean. If you do buy the Plasir, you will also need to buy a convertor to use bottled ink, where the Metropolitan comes with one included.

The Jinhao is a copycat of the Lamy Safari, a good starter, but know that people either absolutely love or hate the style of the grip.

The inks you picked out are good, although to start I really recommend getting a Goulet sample pack so you can try similar colors before committing to an entire bottle, which will last quite a while.

Hope this helps! I love helping new people explore the world of fountain pens :)

u/militantbuddhism · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I would love this, from my $20 and under WL. A good pen to write things is important, folks!

Also, that Five Below store is awesome. It's one of the few classy-ish dollar stores out there.

If you don't mind spending around $180 you could buy her a Lamy 2000 fountain pen http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001D3PYT0?pc_redir=1395215992&robot_redir=1 and then pick up the ball point version here http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000G0G5RG . I love mine and I know lots of other people do too.

Also, you might want to try and find out what type of nib she wants... Like EF, F, M, B, and so on .

I'm afraid the pen is discontinued. It was about $7: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006CQUHXG/

  1. I feel good about how dedicated I am to things I believe in. I am loyal to my friends and family, I worked my butt off in school, and I will work my butt off at my new job. I don't quit or give up on things easily.
  2. Seeing the results of my hard work motivates me. I look at all the things I've accomplished at 23 years, and it helps me realize that even when it totally sucked, the sacrifices I've made and the effort I've put in to reaching my goals really does pay off. Knowing that makes me want to work even harder and push myself to accomplish even more.
  3. Here's an unconventional fitness tip-- eat less meat. I became a vegetarian six years ago, and the benefits have been awesome. I eat fewer calories, I eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and I've tried foods I would have never even considered eating during my meat-eating days. Plus, meat is expensive, so it saves me $$. The whole idea of not getting enough protein is bogus-- there are plenty of foods other than meat that are packed with proteins, it just takes a little planning. Also, it makes avoiding fast food a whole lot easier. Even if you just try giving meat up 1-2 nights a week, I'm sure you'd notice a difference.

You can get a Metro on Amazon for under $12 or a Pilot Kakuno for $9.85. Then you can swap the nibs... not a huge investment.

If she likes fine nibs, another nice EF-nib pen in that price range (from Japanese sellers) is the Pilot Elite/E95s. It's a very beautiful pen and a fine writer (in both senses). However, you will likely get some feedback from the EF. https://www.amazon.com/PILOT-Elite-95s-Deep-Red/dp/B00DDC09XA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484214024&sr=8-1&keywords=pilot+elite+95 Also comes in black/gold.

  • Fossil Wallet
  • Samsung Galaxy S8+ with headphones
  • Cheapo plastic sunglasses
  • keys + Swiss+Tech Utili-Key
  • TWSBI Eco, either white in F nib or black in B nib, typically inked with something from Pilot's Iroshizuku line.
  • Jerky or some other snack
  • Maxpedition Falcon II for all my clothes, toiletries, etc. Fits nicely under the seat in front of me. The snacks I pack usually go into a Maxpedition 12x5 Bottle Holder attached to the side of the backpack. I also attach a Maxpedition Rollypoly to the other side. This is used for unloading all of my pockets when going through security.

I have multiple pens but am still sort of a new collector, and they're all fairly inexpensive. I have a two part question...

My first is, my Pilot's seem to get their tip bent after a while or an unfortunate drop. Is this something I can bend it back or is it toast? I guess I don't know enough about nibs to know if I can just replace them on these Pilots?
My really cheap [Kakuno] (https://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Kakuno-Fine-Nib-Fountain-FKA-1SR-SLF/dp/B00IOOOBU4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1468509915&sr=8-2&keywords=fountain+pen+japanese) seems to be holding up so just as a tip, I'd recommend that baby any day!

Second question is:
What would be a good NEXT pen after the Pilots I own. I've tried a lot of brands under $30 and am ready to go a little higher...like $40-70. Good brands of pens for that price range, and also any inks for that as well. I typically have been using Waterman, J. Herbin, and Parker ink and haven't had a problem but if I buy a more expensive pen I don't necessarily want to junk it up with cheap ink... are those brands OK? OR - are there nibs that I can upgrade to on these Pilot's or are they proprietary and not interchangeable? Are there any good pen websites or what do I look for when buying on eBay?

Also taking a wild guess, it's Sumi ink. Thats a v popular kind lately.

I'll go with everyone else here and say the Pilot Metropolitan, which is just a classic. I love Pilot fountain pens. They have nice, even, fine and extra fine lines and are economical everyday pens. I prefer the way they work with the way I write to my more expensive LAMYs and Faber-Castell Pens.

I will also recommend the Pilot Kakuno, which is a plastic, hexagonal barrel beginner pen (I think it's actually intended for schoolchildren).

I also like [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/Pilot-Fountain-Extra-Clear-PFP50RNCEF/dp/B006CQUI9O/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_3?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1510627790&sr=1-3-fkmr2&keywords=cheap+pilot+fountain+pen) just cause I think it's a kind of cool little demonstrator. You can get right into using these with a CON-50 converter or you can use the Pilot IC-100 Namiki cartridges (which I actually prefer at work because they're a little easier to pop in and out).

You need to also buy a Lamy converter.

You put this converter inside the pen where the ink cartridge was. You can watch the video someone else commented which shows you how to use it.

Edit: Just watched the video, it does not show how to use a converter. Its pretty straightforward once you actually get the converter in your hands. Make sure to flush your pen out first with either the converter or a syringe to make sure that the pen does not have any leftover ink mixing with your new ink.

Of course. Just like in anything, for example, sports, having the best equipment won't improve your skills.

If you wouldn't mind, can you explain to me the different characteristics of a dip pen vs. a... "non-dip" pen, like the Pilot Parallel?

Also, for a straight pen holder, is one like this like the one you're talking about?

Looking into getting the TWBS ECO in fine as an alternate pen to work with.

u/Threeedaaawwwg · 1 pointr/fountainpens

I just take a plastic pipette, and refill my preppy cartridges. $5 for 100 pipettes that can be used for multiple pens, or $7 for the converter that is easier to use, but only for one pen. I guess it's a matter of preference really.

u/UhOhSpaghettiNoes · 1 pointr/fountainpens

They'll come with cartridges, which are usually disposable. You can still get that pack, but if you want to easily take ink from your sample vials, you can either buy a platinum converter, or you can buy a blunt tip syringe(look em up on Amazon) and use that to decant inks into used cartridges.

The converter has a mini piston that draws up ink. Since the preppies seem to come with a cartridge each, I'd just go with refilling the cartridges with a blunt tip syringe as it's cheaper.

Don't forget to wash out the pen and cartridge or converter every time you switch inks!

Excellent quality for the price (sometimes as low as $20), not to big/small/heavy/light. Just a good all around pen, and fairly easy to unload on /s/penswap if it's not for you. Just keep in mind that Pilot nib sizes are Japanese standard, so their "medium" is finer than an American/European brand.

And if you DO enjoy FPs, it's good quality so it will last a good time.

Ah, a journal you say? That sounds lovely. A journal is a lovely way to record and store your excess thoughts. You can look back on them and reflect, and compare your current thoughts to how you used to think in the past. It's a good way to keep track of the way your mind can mature over time. If you organize your thought processes, they flow much more easily and much more naturally. It can be a very calming process. Personally, I know it relaxes me.

Have you ever used a fountain pen before? A friend of mine recommended them to me about a year or so ago. I absolutely love writing with mine. It has a certain way of flowing, you know? My thoughts come straight out of my brain through my neck, down to my right shoulder, through my arm, into my right hand, and it feels almost like the electricity courses through my fingers and I like...become the pen, in a way.

You know? It's nice man. 👌

I don't own many pens, but I'll try and help

<20 - Jinhao X750 (I own this one and it's real cheap and easy), I would also recommend looking at this list by /u/DontFuckWithMyMoney, a lot of people also recommend the Kakuno or Metropolitan made by Pilot

20-50 - Lamy Safari/Vista (A lot of people don't like the design, but I love this pen. Not a fan of the Al-Star though), Noodler's Ahab (Nice pen that you get to play around with), Kaweco Sport, and TWSBI 580 (I haven't used the last two, but I like their look)

*50-100 - Waterman Hemisphere (A bit small, but really good pen), and the Pilot Custom 74 (Don't own it, but I've heard good things and it's $85 on Engeika)

*Note, around here it's things that I don't own, but have heard good things about

100-200 - Pilot CH92 on Engeika, Sailor 1911, and the Lamy 2000.

200-500 - Pelikan M400/600 (I believe it's a size difference?), Sailor Pro Gear, Custom 823

500+ - I really like the look of the pens made by Nakaya. Maybe a rare vintage flex pen.

Vintage pens - My favorite pen I own is the "51", but I'm looking to get an Eversharp Skyline and a Vacumatic.

*Best Designs - I like demonstrator pens (CH92), the Al Sport, Nakayas (milky way, their normal cigar shaped ones), my Parker "51", and the Lamy 2000.

Pens are really subjective though, so opinions will differ between different people. I personally like my pens to be smooth and decently wet if that helps anybody looking at this. But honestly, I think that just exploring fountain pens was a fun experience and people shouldn't take these lists as a strict guide.

EDIT: Adding links and added Al sport to best design

EDIT 2: I also really like the Murex

This. Just getting new supplies is often just as motivating as a tablet I think. A nice new pad of paper, a few nice new pens, maybe even a brush or g-pen and ink if you're feeling adventurous (definitely exciting, but possibly messy).

The Copic marker pad is some nice paper. Paper's a lot about personal preference though, whatever you get go to your local art store the next time and have her help choose one with you https://www.amazon.com/Copic-Markers-Alcohol-Marker-Sheets/dp/B000Q7G7S6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481785351&sr=8-1&keywords=copic+marker+sketch+book

And a few Copic markers would also be awesome, they're expensive but refillable and the best on the market IMO. A Skin tone set: https://www.amazon.com/Copic-Markers-6-Piece-Sketch-Tones/dp/B004XR92EG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1481785568&sr=8-2&keywords=copic+markers

  1. Pilot Penmanship EF, as u/WertherEffekt pointed out if you hate the body you can put the nib on a pilot metropolitan ($6 or $20)
  2. Platinum 3776 UEF, this will be the finest pen ($70)

Style is not something everyone can afford. With the Lamy 2000, you're paying more for style than you are for the 14k nib. Even priced at $125, it's still not an affordable pen for everyone. My pens are a luxury. I still say the Noodler's Nib Creaper is affordable at $14 Except this one in panther pink, which is $20

I bought one last month, the VAT doesn't always seem to get charged, but it's just under £21 added on to the ~£70 price. Personally, I'd say it depends.

You can chance not getting VAT added on and maybe getting it for £70, but you'd have to wait a few weeks. If the VAT gets added, it's not -much- more to get it from Amazon and have the reassurance of the return policy (and likely have it ~3 weeks earlier)

I have a few others, but I mostly use my Safari with Diamante China Blue ink. I have one safari with a leaky tip, or the ink doesn't like to stay in (Diamante ancient copper) and one safari that will not write no matter how I press. I need to figure out how to solve that problem, as in a day I can go through a whole full ink cartridge.

I have some suuuuuuuper ultra extra fine pilot pens from Japan, which I really like, though they are scratchy to write with, due to how fine the tips are! The ink seems to dry without getting a good flow in one of them (one of the Noodler's V Day inks) but the Noodler's bulletproof works very well in the other one. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B006CQUHXG/

I use a Tachikawa nib holder with a Maru nib. I was under the impression that the two are similar when it comes to use. I guess if that's not the case, I'm in the wrong sub lol

Does he own a modern pen or a classy pen? Personally I'd love a Pilot Namiki Falcon with a soft fine nib (in that price range), but it's a matter of personal taste too.

The reason this pen is special for fountain pen lovers is that it has a soft nib that can give a lot of line variation with pressure.
