I use a folding step stool instead. Then it can be put away. It also can be explained as being used to reach high shelves.

I found it on hayneedle but then saw that amazon had it at a more affordable price
Yard sale season is coming up, so scour your area for those. We scored a free toy storage shelves like this and this lego/train table with storage underneath - both for free on the curb in our neighborhood. I also got alphabet foam mats like this one for $10 on craigslist.
As far as stuff we paid for that I'd recommend:
I'm not sure if you're looking for toy suggestions, too, or just room design elements...
The answer is a learning tower like this!!! There are lots of different versions, but they all have some sort of railing to make sure they don't fall/step off of the platform. Most also have adjustable platforms so that you can lower it as they grow taller. My son is now 30 mo, but we've been using a tower since around 22 months. He absolutely loves it, and helps me cook and/or wash dishes every night, with the added benefit that he eats a ton of veggie odds and ends while we're working!

These things come in a range of prices, but I found most seemed to be too expensive. There are woodworking patterns that you can download for free, and if you've got a drill and a bit of skill you can make one yourself for cheaper. Ours isn't too pretty, but we were able to build it for ~ $50 worth of materials.
If you can’t make one or get someone to help you, maybe something like this would work.

I want to start baby off in a crib in our room. Eventually, I want a montessori-style nursery with a mirror, a ballet barre, & a floor bed when baby is old enough. I saw the cutest piece of furniture a while ago that was a tent-style reading nook similar to this.
Very cute space! Love the wall color. I realize I went a little overboard. But I'm stuck under a sleeping baby and this was fun! :)
If it were my space: Twin bed along on wall with large window, pillows arranged as daybed. Dresser on tall wall. In front of that a low table/kids table. Fun rug underneath to create the feel of a separate space. 2 high Cube shelving unit in between sitting/table space and rest of the playroom. Cube units allow for access on both sides. TV mounted up in corner of the tall walls. Triangle flags draped across the ceiling over sitting bed/table section

There ARE specialized chairs for playing, but frankly MANY chairs can work, and those specialized ones tend to be really expensive.
A lot of people use 2-foot-tall bar stools. Fender and other companies make them. They are anywhere from about $50 to $100 for a nice, tall, vinyl-covered padded one. You can get these at like Guitar Center etc. This type of stool is also what Guitar Center provides out on the store floor for people to sit on while they try out guitars & amps:

I usually practice 4-6 hours a day and do it in 1 of 2 places:
Usually, I actually sit quite low on the ground, on a plastic Rubbermaid stepstool. I've been using this same one for many years. Here's a pic:

I cross my legs in front of me, "Indian style," but sitting on a stool rather than directly on the floor allows me to keep better posture. Being close to the ground keeps me at ear level for my amps, and also makes it really easy to program settings on my floorboard or adjust settings on my amp, as they are within arms' reach.
If I'm not practicing there, I usually practice on my piano bench:

This is useful for practice sessions when I'm working on theory concepts or ear training (using the piano), or if I'm doing sight-reading or learning new material and need the built-in music stand.

Chair link is here for the exact one I got, it’s the biggest one I could find and it’s awesome so far! Sorry I forgot to come back and check for comments everyone!!
I use this one under my desk and it works great. It's not collapsible, but it's very lightweight.
We have this one . It has been great so far for my son. He turns 3 in a few days and his grandparents bought it as an early birthday present. I went back and forth for about a year as to whether we needed one. Space is kind of tight in our kitchen and there weren’t a lot of places he could use it without being in the way of drawers and cabinets. About 2 months ago he decided he just HAD to eat at the counter and chose a collapsible step stool to drag over there. But that wasn’t very safe because he would not be careful as toddlers often aren’t. I like the one we have because the profile is slimmer than many others and the step up can be folded in if you need the floor clearance. Since it arrived he’s eaten 90% of meals on it, whoch has been fine because family sit downs are rare for us right now with a 4 month old as well. He has also started “helping” me cook now that he is at a proper height to really reach things on our high counters.
Here is the bookcase, I'm very happy with it. (https://www.amazon.com/Tot-Tutors-Storage-Bookshelf-Collection/dp/B000IHJF60/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1498696855&sr=8-2&keywords=kids+bookcase)
And yes, she's a mini Eskie! Our vet says she's got a little Pom in her, and that's why she's not full size.
Throwing out a few ideas.
Starting with the pine countertop. Apply a contact paper such as this marble one to add a more refined look. Choose a contact paper that is made for countertops and matches your home. Consider something similar to your bathroom or kitchen counters. There are many styles of contact paper such a tile and stained wood. I would also add table legs like these to stabilize the countertop, especially for my next suggestion. Make sure the countertop sits at least a couple of inches above your washer and dryer (I know it seems like a no brainer but just in case).
To help distract away from everything thats going on, I would add a cube shelving unit like this one. Use fabric cube boxesto store your detergent and other cleaning supplies. They come in different colors and designs. Make sure you order the right size for your shelving unit. This idea would help visually clean up the space. If you decided to do this, I would remove the wall shelf. I would not suggest doing this without attaching table legs to the pine.
Throw up a tension rod with a neutral curtain to divide off the room. I would use rings since fabric on rod isn’t good for constant movement. If your home calls for it or you’re into some extra, look into decorative hooks.
Hopefully my suggestions will help you create a great laundry room that fits your needs and requests.

I bought it a few years ago in a natural wood color, it does get a little slippery if the kids use it at the sick so I also put some none skid tub stickers on the platform part.
