It's not on the sale page, but Cash 'n Guns is $20 right now.

Specifically that is the 50th Anniversary set one made by Franklin Mint. Probably the nicest of the commercially available versions of this board.

Honestly, this is really just a display piece. People have come up with rules, but since it was originally designed just to look futuristic on tv ... it's not a great layout for actually playing chess.

You claim to be vegan, yet play a game owned by a mega-corporation that glamorises carnism in their products? Support vegan indie rpgs!

Seriously thought, I used to annoy people by playing a vegetarian werewolf in Werewolf: the Apocalypse. Believe it or not the option was actually discussed in the setting book.

u/Route66_LANparty · 7 pointsr/Warhammer

Correct. They don't come fully assembled or painted. But there's very healthy secondary markets. Both for used assembled/painted models. Or commissioning another hobbyist to build/paint your army exactly how you like it... if you have the funds and patience.

Unlike a tabletop game like X-Wing or Armada. A large part of Warhammer is the building/painting your army/squad to make it your own.

I buy quite a bit used already assembled and painted from eBay or /r/Miniswap because I like to collect more factions than I have time to assemble and paint. Often times you can find quite the deal, getting roughly assembled and painted models for less than the cost of new.

Also as /u/Princerombur mentioned, Games Workshop does have an "Easy to Assemble" line of models, that are not only quick push fit assembly, but are also already colored plastic in the faction's primary color.

----

If it's something you are interested in trying, but unsure if the assembly/painting or even play is something you want to try. 40k First Strike or AoS Storm Strike are inexpensive box sets that will teach you the rules to the SciFi 40k or Fantasy Age of Sigmar wargames with push fit, pre-colored plastic versions of the models.

If after learning the rules, it's something that tickles your interest, you can grab a grey or black rattle can spray primer, a 40k or AoS painting starter sets and see if that part of the game/hobby works for you as well.

To top that off, unless participating in a major event, you do not actually need to paint your models, just assemble (or buy used already assembled). You certainly don't need to paint them up to the works of art I'm sure you've see online.

If you do want to do some painting, you can actually get by with a very quick and simple process, using very few paints. Spray a color primer on it that's the majority of the models color, often the same across your entire army. It's usually the armor, cape or skin color. Then, use 2 or 3 colors to pick out and brush on some extra details, things like armor trim, weapon, or leather. Don't need to get all the details, just in a few spots. Then, cover the entire model in a black or brown wash. It will settle into all the recesses, giving the model depth and letting you see all those details.

My suggestions for fun two player games that have a small footprint are below. I haven't tried playing these in a pub, but I think they should work.

Love Letter - I played this at a party recently and enjoyed it. There are various themes, including a munchkins variant.

Pass the Pigs - I used to bring this game with me on plane trips because it is compact and playable on a tray table.

Toss Up - Fun dice game, simple rules, could be turned into a drinking game if you are so inclined.

Timeline - Lots of different versions of this game, all have to do with history, but you can pick different topics, and even combine packs.

Exploding Kittens - random fun, there is also a NSFW version that is full of boob/penis/poop/etc jokes.

Hanabi - I have the tile version of this, which is a little bulkier, but is much more drink and food resistant.

u/ghost_403 · 6 pointsr/SCYTHE

I picked up the Broken Token box organizer for Scythe and 100% recommend it. The number of bags drove me nuts to the point where I didn't want to play it. Now, it's "you're playing Russviet? Here are your pieces." Night and day difference.

I bought the one for the base game + invaders, but they do have a set for the Legendary box that fits all three expansions. https://www.amazon.com/Broken-Token-Organizer-Legendary-Expansions/dp/B07FXYHJHF/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1549459395&sr=8-2&keywords=broken+token+scythe

This Big Box is $62 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076JKBDJ4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_QAfACbBWPNB3Q

For the price, especially if you like the game, is worth it in my opinion. It includes the base game and 11 expansions, two of which are major expansion: Inns & Cathedrals, and Traders & Builders. These expansions cost about $15-$20 each, and add a lot to the game in how you use certain tiles, adding more strategies and one expansion adds the ability to play with 6 players. These are the two expansions that really add extra layers to the base game.

Another two are the Abbot and the River, both of which come with the base game anyways. The River doesn't add much to the gameplay, but it helps start the game and I like the look of the River. The Abbot allows you to place a Monk on a monastery or garden, and remove him before that tile is completely surrounded. The other 7 expansions are small expansions that add the slightest of changes, and cannot be purchased separately from the Big Box.

If you know you like Carcassonne and want you're own copy, I'd say get the big box. The base game + Inns & Cathedrals + Traders & Builders will cost you about $60, but you won't be able to add the 7 mini expansions in if you do it this way. That's why I think the Big Box is worth it. My only complaint is the box is WAY too large. You can fit all the components of it into the base game box with no problems.

If you want to make it ACTUALLY fun, there is a lip reading game called "Hearing Things": https://www.amazon.com/Hasbro-C3379-Hearing-Things-Game/dp/B01MR4V1M1

u/seaofstars · 3 pointsr/secretsanta

Guillotine is fantastic. My friends always ask for that one at game night :)

Timeline has become a new favorite to pull out in-between longer games. We're all in our mid-twenties and enjoy trying to remember our high school history and science classes but I think this would be a good game for Redditors that are looking for games to play with their kids as well. There are a few alternate decks--you can mix and match; they're not true "expansions." Bonus: it comes in a very attractive, small, metal tin and is very portable!

Citadels is another card game that can be played with 2-7 players (though it's honestly better with at least 4). First person to build up their medieval-themed city ends the game, however, all players then count points for their city landmarks (so the biggest city is not necessarily the winning city.) It gets a little madcap as you change "profession" (each with their own special ability) every round but I really enjoy it.

For the Redditor with a darker sense of humor, get Gloom ! The creator actually came up with the idea for the game because his wife didn't like being "mean" to other players in games. In this game, you have 4 spooky families that you literally have to kill with kindness! It's quirky and another one that gets asked for fairly frequently at game nights. It's best with 4 players but there are expansion packs available to gain new families and fit more players in.

Wits and Wagers is a trivia game that isn't, where everyone gets a white board and a marker and has to write either a number or date according to the trivia question on the card (how many feet tall is the Statue of Liberty, etc.) Then you arrange the boards and bet with chips on which one you think is correct--the closest answer wins, everyone is dealt chips, and it goes on for 7 rounds in total. Highly recommended!

As someone who looks forward to having the occasional quiet night in with my boyfriend, I find that there are a lot of games that say they can be 2 player but aren't actually any good with any fewer than 3 or 4 players. Lost Cities is a very good 2 player only game where you're playing as much against yourself as the other player. The Amazon reviews are all more or less indifferent or negative so I had put off buying it but after playing it during a visit with a friend, I knew I had to have it. Mr. Jack , though pricier at $30.47 is another very good 2 player only game of cat and mouse. (I haven't tried the pocket version, which is less expensive, but it seems to have favorable reviews.)

OP has a great list so I hope it's "the more the merrier" with my additions (not trying to step on any toes!)

u/christes · 3 pointsr/Showerthoughts

She should have just bought these.

Wait a sec...

u/elguitarro · 3 pointsr/boardgames

Sorry to hear about your condition. Games I have had a lot of fun when it comes to pick up, no issues are:

Cash N Guns (you pretty much choose which bullet you have to use and point to someone. The whole pointing toward someone with a foam gun is just fun and leads to fun rounds)

Telestrations (which is the telephone game and pictionary combined, it's really great as it depends on everyone's drawing skills. There's a 6, 8 and 12 option so whatever player count is try to grab that one.)

and

[Luchador! Mexican Wrestling Dice] (https://www.amazon.com/Ninja-Division-410502NJD-Luchador-Board/dp/B00NUT8POQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1481191250&sr=1-1&keywords=luchador+mexican+wrestling+dice): For this last one I might be biased bc I like wrestling and I'm from Mexican descent, but it is literally rolling dice into a 3D ring (or mat, it comes with both options) and just yelling and screaming as the announcer. Whenever you pin someone the other person has to throw dice three (four in their first try) times to escape the pin (just to simulate the 1 - 2 - 3 referee count) and it's just fun. I have noticed that even friends that don't like wrestling but know the basic gist of it, still have fun. Especially with the second edition of the game as you can save dice or perform special moves that have an announcer like description and you need to read out loud when performing them . So it pretty much ends up with everyone just yelling moves ("oh my god he threw him into a table" "oh he just hit him with a chair!" and so on as they pretend they're the announcer of the match and read everything out loud.

Hope my suggestions help you a bit. If I remember any other games I'll let you know man.

u/whalepower · 2 pointsr/boardgames

The timeline games are very similar in nature--you basically try to get rid of all of your cards by placing them in the right order on the timeline before the other players. There are different themes for each pack (like events, inventions, people, etc.) that you can combine and play all together.

That's the Uber set her got - we haven't made it through all the expansions yet but so far the Builder and the Abbot are two faves :)

u/k_bomb · 2 pointsr/nfl

+1 to this entire list. Also, not necessarily a "board" game, but Cash 'n Guns is a great party game for $22.23.

On Photosynthesis, it is a very pretty resource management game that involves risk/reward elements and resource denial (because your trees block the sunlight from shorter trees, depending on the angle of the sun).

u/ValerieJade · 2 pointsr/pics

These remind me of a coloring book I had as a child.

u/anna_in_indiana · 2 pointsr/secretsanta

I love traditional board games too. I'd assume that they already have things like Scrabble, Scattergories, and Taboo and go with something like Wits and Wagers, Encore, Sequence, or Loaded Questions. It kinda depends what kind of games they like - strategy/card, singing, word games, party/get-to-know-you games, etc.

u/AhnaldT101 · 2 pointsr/SWGalaxyOfHeroes

So this isn’t exactly like SWGoH but trust me it is a lot of fun. It is called Star Wars Destiny. It is a collectible card and dice game (so it is a game you physically play and not on mobile) and it has a SWGoH feel to it. Take your favorite characters into battle and with the help of upgrades, supports, events, and using the battlefield to your favor you conquer your opponents! It is pretty easy to learn and I did a small focus group that consisted of SWGoH players and they loved it. Great fun for kids and adults. I got younger siblings and they love using my Rey and Obi Wan (although they may not have the best strategy 😂).

I have been addicted to this game and if you like the game but don’t feel the need to buy the cards, you can download a game off of Steam called TabletopSimulator (usually $10-$20 depending on when you buy it) and play it on your computer with friends locally or around the world and essentially play in sandbox mode. Great way to test your cards out with someone and build some hypothetical decks or just have fun with cards you don’t even own. If you get into the game I highly recommend getting the starter decks that have been out for awhile (there is a Rey an Kylo starter each about $12) and a new product which just came out called 2 Player Game which is $29, can be bought at Target (or $23 if you get it from Amazon), and has good cards and 2 (almost) completed decks to play with. There are also booster packs which I believe are $3 each. They have 3 expansions of cards out right now (Awakenings, Spirit of Rebellion, and the just released Empire at War).

As an added note, like SWGoH, Destiny has a website very similar to SWGoH.gg which allows you to inventory your cards, build decks, edit them, see what the best decks are out there, and even download a file to use in Tabletop Simulator.

I’ve had a blast playing this game and even have considered making videos on YouTube about it. It’s nice to get something physical for your money and the cool thing is some cards are worth a lot of money (I came across a few cards valued at over $50 that came from a $3 booster pack which I could resell if I wanted). For $23-$30 you get pretty much 2 full decks and a lot of fun so you can’t go wrong really.

Main drawback: the game is realllllly addicting and fun and could be an expensive game if you get sucked in and have a desire to collect a LOT of cards. Just gotta control yourself! But even if you do get sucked in one could argue you are getting more for your money than taking a gamble on the Chromium packs for SWGoH.

I’ll leave a few links if you want to check it out :)

3 games that are on my wish list. I have not played them myself, but I have heard good things.

u/VannaVictorian · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

fear cuts deeper than swords

1.) Something that is grey. probably the best thing invented.

2.) Something reminiscent of rain. who doesn't like doggy rain jackets? :3

3.) Something food related that is unusual. BACON

4.) Something on your list that is for someone other than yourself. Tell me who it's for and why. this item is something i would like to give to my boyfriend as a gift. he finally got his dream car on the road and we both love Judas priest.

5.) A book I should read! I am an avid reader, so take your best shot and tell me why I need to read it! this book is a classic. if you have seen the movie then the book is even better. along with my grandparents being back round actors in the original movie. look the book, love the movies.

6.) An item that is less than a dollar, including shipping... that is not jewelry, nail polish, and or hair related! cause its "cheap stuff"

7.) Something related to cats. I love cats! i would never get bored with this. or tiss on my wishlist :3

8.) Something that is not useful, but so beautiful you must have it. it's useless to me because i don't drink, but it's cool as fuck. (on wishlist, for my sister)

9.) A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why? I loved this movie when i first watched it. it's interesting, keeps you watching and it doesnt start out boring like most "scary movies" do. it's a movie i would suggest to all. (on wishlist)

10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. it explains itself.. but you can hold a lot of stuff while out hunting zombies!

11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals. my mother is a nail tech and i want to go to school as one so i can become one as well. this would help me become better at doing nails while i 'practice' on people.

12.) One of those pesky Add-On items. do you want a stinky toilet?

13.) The most expensive thing on your list. Your dream item. Why? i've always been a huge fan of sugar skulls and i would love this in my room. it's not a dream item but it is the highest priced item on my wishlist. i think it's beautiful.

14.) Something bigger than a bread box. on my wishlist. isn't it pretty? :)

15.) Something smaller than a golf ball. on my wishlist. " a golf ball weighs no more than 1.620 oz (45.93 grams), has a diameter not less than 1.680 in (42.67 mm)" my item is 1.25 in.

16.) Something that smells wonderful. i'm native american so i enjoy burning incense and sage. don't know about you, but it's a wonderful thing to me.

17.) A (SFW) toy. who doesn't like laser pointers? dog people. thats who.

18.) Something that would be helpful for going back to school. fuck, i'm 17 and i'd buy this for myself!

19.) Something related to your current obsession, whatever that may be. i'm obsessed with Judas Priest, as well as my boyfriend. i need to knew sweatshirt and i've been trying to convince my parents to get me this one. Turbo Love by Judas Priest is my boyfriend and I's song to each other, he just got his car on the road so his license plate is dedicated to that song. (wishlist item)

20.) Something that is just so amazing and awe-inspiring that I simply must see it. Explain why it is so grand. you may not think this is so amazing, but holy shit who wouldn't want to fucking float on a donut? i mean paint yourself yellow and just call yourself mothafuckinnn homer simpson! or this you'd have the best skinny dip of your life!

this was really fun! thank you :)

This is a really fun board game

Edit: I figured I would explain a bit about it. There's a bunch of trivia questions and the answer to every question is a number. It's very rare that you get the answer correct, but that doesn't matter. You lay out the cards and bet on the answer you think is closest without going over. You win by collecting the most poker chips by the end of 7 questions.

Left Center Right Dice Game (about $6) - My husband's family plays this every year at Christmastime and uses dimes or nickles instead of chips. When a dozen people are playing this simple game, it is fun and the winner gets all.

Last Word (amazon claims around $18) - Great party game. Subject and letter cards and a buzzer that goes off at random times. Try to get the last word in that fits the subject and first letter to get to the finish.

Any themed Fluxx (around $13) - We own 2 versions, zombie and monty python. New rules like "groan like a zombie when you draw certain cards or lose a turn" and "all 3s are now 5s" keep the game really fun with the right type of people.

Doodle Dice (around $13) - Kiddish game, but fun. Think yahtzee but with the ability to steal player's points.

Wits and Wagers (around $18) - Played once or twice at a friend's house, really fun with at least 4 people.

Quelf (okay, okay, this one's more like $25+, but worth mentioning since it I don't see it often here) - Think cranium with mostly action cards. Last time I played I think I was wearing a self-made scuba mask and couldn't bend my legs or arms when it wasn't my turn. Potential for many laughs if with the right type of people.

I also agree on Pass the Pigs.

u/cinnabrite · 1 pointr/Miniswap

I'd probably start with something like the First Strike set if you're looking for under $100. It's only about $40 and it has 2 small forces for you and your friend to try it out.

Games Workshop Warhammer 40,000 First Strike https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073VQZN5C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_YP-QCb8S3M26F

u/BillClam · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Yeah, 40 bucks seems to be the go to price for a lot of games, every once in a while you can find a few bucks knocked off of it.

Personally I go to a friend's game night, and he has some games that go close to 100 dollars in value. Are they fun? Yes. Would I pay that much? In no such way ever.

I'm a big fan of "non-competitive" games, you can ruin someone's day in Catan, I enjoy it, but when I host, I tend to go for more co-op games. Firefly is competitive, but I have to say you don't notice the competition, I had so much fun flying around the 'verse that I was surprised when someone finished their goal mission, meaning the game was over.

Avalon and Cash and Guns are two games that are also fun that run a little cheaper than 40 bucks. Avalon has you on a quest with King Arthur's team, only one of you is a traitor, one of you is Merlin who knows who the traitor(s) are, but none of you can say out loud who is who. You go on quest and basically everyone turns in a chip that indicates if the quest is or isn't successful, chances are a traitor will allow the first mission to succeed to throw suspicions off, lots of fun.

Cash and Guns is silly, you get fake guns and a pile of (also fake) cash the round is simply you pointing your gun at someone, and you either do or don't have a card that says your gun fires, your opponent can "chicken out" and give you the cash, or get shot and lose the cash, but if you have a blank, and they stay in, you split the score. Lots of fun because of the "pressure" and sudden betrayals.

edit - It should also be said, if you have more than four people at game night, then you need the Settlers expansion.

edit edit - Also, Amazon isn't always the best price wise, I don't know why, but games seem to move up and down this ten dollar spectrum right now Firefly is 47 bucks, but I've seen in under 40.

Here's what I'd do if I had to rebuild a collection from scratch for $1k trying to have a wide variety of play styles:

Battlestar Galactica $39.97
Carcassonne $30.02
Carcassonne Inns & Cathedrals$15.71

Dominion Big Box $69.18 Prosperity is one of the best expansions; Alchemy is not, but you're pretty much getting it for free in this set.
Eclipse $61.49 It wouldn't be a board game library without a 4X game, and I think Eclipse is the best currently.
Eldritch Horror $40.47 - I love Arkham Horror, but Eldritch streamlines a lot of the fiddly rules of the original.

Race for the Galaxy $24.11
Resistance, The $17.99
Roborally $37.49
Settlers of Catan $37.99
Telestrations $19.99 Awesome and funny party game. My friends and I eventually tire of Apples to Apples or Cards Against Humanity, but seldom do so with this.

u/LieutenantKetchup · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Wits and Wagers is a great game that few people have probably heard of (at least IMO).

Basically you get asked a general knowledge question that has a numerical answer (Most of the questions have a large range of possible answers so even if you know the subject pretty well, you're usually hard-pressed to get the answer exactly right). Everyone writes down their guess in secret and then the answers are revealed, and put in order from highest to lowest. Next everyone bets based on which answer they think is correct, and each answer gets different odds based on whether its the median answer or one of the outliers. Its very fun because you can do very well even if you don't know crap about any of the answers just by knowing how to wager and knowing the knowledge bases of the other players.

TL;DR 1. Everyone guesses on a tough numerical question. 2. Everyone bets on which answer they think is closest. 3. Profit.

I have a french copy of timeline inventions lying around. Bought it to play with an ex that spoke french - we broke up on friendly terms, but now theres not much opportunity to play it.

Books and such are out of the question because it's too easy to get something they already have or don't want. However, the tools of storytelling are pretty universal. You can probably track those down, they're pretty simple.

These people play a lot of games, so I'm going to suggest something that a tabletop gamer might play in between sessions, as a break: http://www.amazon.com/Cash-N-Guns-Second-Edition/dp/B00KU10OUU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418189568&sr=8-1&keywords=cash+n+guns

Alternatively, the 2-player starter set is available on Amazon for under $60, and it comes with 2 guilds, dice, terrain, a board, and all the templates you need, which is honestly a pretty good deal. https://www.amazon.com/Guild-Ball-Player-Starter-Steamforged/dp/B01NBF512K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1502203958&sr=8-1&keywords=guild+ball+kick+off

UPDATE: Looks like Amazon just dropped the box set to $20 as well. Free shipping for prime customers or carts over $25. (for those who don't want to spend $30 or somehow missed the Target deal)
