• Also get yourself a saucer (you can get this at any garden store) and a pot elevator for each pot (pot elevator example: http://amazon.ca/Gro-Pro-725675-Level-Elevator/dp/B01J37FHF8/)
• Soil: Get yourself a bail of Pro Mix HP with mycorrhizae (it's cheap, reliable, and hard to overwater) from Canadian Tire, Rona, any store really and get also a bag of earthworm castings. Cover the bottom of your fabric pot with the castings (2-3 inches deep) https://www.homehardware.ca/en/20l-organic-worm-castings/p/5025712
• Nutrients: Gaia Green Dry Amendments (All Purpose and Power Bloom) Mix the All Purpose in with your Pro-Mix HP and then top dress your "soil" every month, changing it to Power Bloom during flowering https://www.canadiangardensupply.com/gaia-green-all-purpose-4-4-4.html https://www.canadiangardensupply.com/gaia-green-power-bloom-2-8-4-power-bloom-2-8-4-2kg.html
• Ventilation: Get the AC Infinity Cloudline T4 - it's absolutely worth it. Then purchase a 4-inch carbon filter and 4 inch tubing from Amazon (branding doesn't matter for these two things) https://www.amazon.ca/AC-Infinity-CLOUDLINE-T4-Ventilation/dp/B06ZXWN3BG https://www.amazon.ca/AC-Infinity-Dual-Layer-Aluminium-Ventilation/dp/B071LHCFZ8 https://www.amazon.ca/VIVOSUN-Australia-Charcoal-Pre-filter-Included/dp/B01DXYMBU6

I've always thought it was pretty junky... I've wanted to get lights to put on the tops of the shelves, so they're directly above the plants and maybe find a new shelf. But these have worked out since November of last year! I started using really cheap LED lights from Walmart, highest wattage equivalency with the highest color spectrum(usually 5000k).

I now use these:

u/Ekrof · 11 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

> I am choosing to leave out side lights from my first build to reduce the amount of variables that may give me electrical/heat issues. Will this significantly affect my yield to the point where I should be seriously reconsidering this decision?

Not really. The sidelights are a nice and cheap upgrade, but probably affects more trichome production than yield.

> Which of those two fans do you think will work better for me? If these are both horrible, what other fans should I be looking at? I am looking at doing a DIY carbon filter since it seems to be pretty straightforward. What sort of DIY carbon filters do you suggest? How powerful should fans be to deal with a carbon filter in a standard-size space bucket?

Its really hard to recommend those small fans for filters, my advice would be to get an inline fan and filter and not overcomplicate things. ONA gel is also a good solution for odors.

> I am using white buckets rather than mylar because it seems white buckets work fine and mylar can create hot spots. Is this accurate?

White buckets are a fine choice, but mylar does not create hot spots. That is a myth. Check /r/HandsOnComplexity for the science behind that.

> I've read that buckets are much cheaper at stores than they are on Amazon. Around how much should I be spending for 4x white 5 gallon buckets? Are there any other items in my build that I can get for cheaper in person?

Try to get them for free. I've never paid for a 5gal bucket. At least in my city there are a lot of 5gal buckets near construction sites, to give one example. You just have to know where to look.

> I am planning on ordering seeds from Nirvana. Is this a good vendor or is there a different one that I should be using?

Should be OK, most big vendors are fine.

> I've found plenty of resources about space buckets on this subreddit and the website, but not much on the actual process of growing Marijuana inside of a space bucket. Apart from the setup, is there any difference in the process of growing Marijuana inside of a space bucket and growing it another way? Is there any sort of guide or subreddit dedicated to what's needed to go from seed to harvest you can point me towards?

Check the bucket plant guide for tips from the community. The best kind of experience will be your first hand experience. You should expect to kill some plants before mastering the proccess. In a Space Bucket, the main challenge is keeping the plant as short as possible. If you keep it low the lighting will be more effective, and the flowers more awesome.

> Any general advice? Anything I'm missing?

Yes, don't forget to update us and to have fun! Welcome to the community.

What you're smelling is the terpenes, the volatile aromatic compounds present in cannabis. They provide the taste, aroma, and synergistic effects present in cannabis. You could, if you were so inclined, put your flower in a vacuum chamber and pull all those terps off. It would smell like grass, taste like ass, and not be as pleasant effect-wise, but it would get rid of the smell. Try a dry-herb vape. There's still smell, but it's a lot less. Or, put one of these in your smoking area: https://www.amazon.com/VIVOSUN-Air-Filtration-Kit-Controller/dp/B06XFRNPR8/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_86_img_1/143-0726135-2560430?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=PP2EZ1QZN61VNVCEGBSN

u/dustytampons · 10 pointsr/proplifting

You’ll need to buy grow lights. :))

I use these two though other growers might recommend better:

LED Grow Light Bulb, TaoTronics... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0748D2SMB?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Dimmable Spectrum Plant Grow... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DH47QZM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

u/PunkHawg · 9 pointsr/Permaculture

A 3-way soil tester will help as well because although lime will help break down the clay, adding too much base will throw off pH balance and impede microbial growth. They're pretty cheap, as seen here: https://www.amazon.com/Sonkir-Soil-Moisture-Tester-Gardening/dp/B07BR52P26

u/Nyvix · 9 pointsr/haworthia

I’ve only ever grown with artificial lights (unique living situation) so here’s some I can personally vouch for and recommend.

Sansi bulbs. I have the 24W model (fits in any standard desk lamp) and the 15W lights. These have special lenses that focus the beam very strongly in one spot, like a spotlight so it can be raised pretty high and cover a large-ish area. Don’t underestimate these, I put a plant too close to center and it turned jet black in 2 days. He bounced back just fine but these are definitely strong.

Strip lights. I’ve since upgraded my Sansi’s to these with a dedicated shelf. These aren’t as strong, I talked to a user on r/Succulents that reported haw etiolation 9 inches away from the light. However, once she lowered it to 5 inches they said they get amazing stress coloration. To put it in perspective, they said they had a Black Prince that’s always been green but has since gone black like the plant’s supposed to be.
As a bonus, here are the shelves I use, they are exactly the same dimensions as the lights.

Both are very capable depending on your needs.

Edit 11/26/19: Sooo, the strip lights have shot up to $200 for some reason. When I linked them, they were only $49. It’s either a stock issue or the new price, not sure.

Anyone tried these? I’m looking for something in this price range

u/jaxdraw · 8 pointsr/succulents

I have 3 sets of these guys (so 6 total lights) - https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07LG39B3M?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

They are hooked up to a $10 smart timer that's programmed to cycle the lights, 4 hours on and 10 minutes off (recommended by the manufacturer).

I've had them for 3 months and have observed decent growth and farina coloring.

u/MP5OOO · 8 pointsr/Sneks

Thermostat for the UTH (under tank heater)! That's a BIG MUST for a UTH. Temps that are too high can cause burns and neurological issues (aka brain damage). You can get one relatively cheap. The one I use is here iPower Digital Heat Mat Thermostat
Good luck, you choose the right pet!🐍 Hisss!

More Pics: In Tent - Height - Stem - Bud

Pretty much stopped growing vertical (an inch or 2 since last update) but filling out nicely.

Some yellow showing on tips, but not too concerned at this point as she looks to be doing fine. I noticed roots at the top of the soil and had about an inch of room for more substrate, so topped it up.

She is drinking a lot now, almost daily feedings of about 3 liters.

Screen to keep curious pets out: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MR2SZOJ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I used the self adhesive that came with the screen, but I'd definitely recommend sewing the border and velcro on if you have the means and the talent. Pulling the screen on and off weakens the adhesive for sure. The lights don't make much heat. They are also on a timer that I inherited so I don't have a link for that. But my plants really like it! I have an echeveria lola that has stress colors and lithops on the top shelf propped to be closer that I think are doing fine. They are starting to split on their own which I'm super excited about. My PVN also gets a very dark purple when it was on the middle shelf during the last couple hurricanes that hit the east coast.

My railing planter was just moved to the bottom shelf for the cold evenings but seeing as I have echeveria and cacti that are doing well under these lights already I'm not too worried.

u/Tio_De_Las_Plantas · 7 pointsr/haworthia

I was confused by etiolation at first. I looks like vigorous growth at first.

This bulb has done wonders for my light needy plants (I don't work for them, just a fan of their product)

u/[deleted] · 7 pointsr/IndoorGarden

I was the same way. I had no idea which to get, so I bought the blue/red light bars and they didn’t do anything for my plants. I ended up going with a full spectrum LED. My plants are thriving now.

I have these little guys from Amazon

They do the trick nicely for smaller shelves or set ups. There’s several different versions on there. They run around $15-19.

Nothing special, just one of these from Amazon:

https://smile.amazon.com/Upgraded-Dimmable-Spectrum-Adjustable-Gooseneck/dp/B07H57K565

This has been 3+ months of 24/7 light. I'm not sure if that's advisable but I've had fun experimenting.

u/whatsthedill · 6 pointsr/GrowingMarijuana

Congrats on finding the seeds and getting this far. If you are a first time grower, then I would highly recommend a controlled environment starting with a tent. I have done it both ways, and outdoor seasonally, and you will benefit a lot from having a confined space you can control as you learn. Contrary to popular belief, it isnt "just a weed that grows". To have a quality finished product you need a good amount of time and energy spent on the plants. However, because the growth takes time, as a first time grower, you can purchase the items you need as you need them to build out your grow. I have purchased a lot of my items on amazon, so I will provide some links to items I vouch for personally.

I would start with a light and good soil. This is one of the most important items by far. For indoor, use LED, or a combo of T5 for veg and then LED for flower.t5: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M624OCR/ref=crt_ewc_title_oth_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1KBVFFLR1WEMK

LED: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0185OLBPK/ref=sspa_dk_detail_10?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B0185OLBPK

I have both of these products and can finish 4 plants in a tent nicely in about 100 days. I know people have feelings about using off brand lights but I have had zero issues, ever. On thing to do though is to not let the plants grow too tall. Rather train them to grow like bushes by topping them early and continuing to top the new nodes at a reasonable height, Id suggest 30 inches max (from top of the pot).

Also buy this : https://www.amazon.com/General-Hydroponics-pH-Control-Kit/dp/B000BNKWZY/ref=pd_sim_86_7?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B000BNKWZY&pd_rd_r=5185d750-c735-11e8-83ba-35492fd40af5&pd_rd_w=FfWzV&pd_rd_wg=5opTv&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=18bb0b78-4200-49b9-ac91-f141d61a1780&pf_rd_r=5TDAFKEPVRHZC2TKYA3F&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=5TDAFKEPVRHZC2TKYA3F

AND LEARN ABOUT pH!!!! Many young growers don't do this and it makes a HUGE difference.

For veg, you will be able to get by a few weeks or maybe a month without a tent, but the light will become annoying.

For soil. I highly recommend mixing fox farms happy frog and ocean forest. This will prevent you needing to use fertilizers really at all until flower time. Yes it is kind of expensive, but it is worth it. I have tried the experiment of making soil myself... it becomes outrageously priced so fast and unless you are really good at chemistry/botany you can totally fuck some shit up. Trust the fox farms soil. It is the best IMO. Also, I am a huge fan of cloth bags. I suggest these:

https://www.amazon.com/VIVOSUN-5-Pack-Thickened-Nonwoven-Handles/dp/B00TF9E6XE/ref=pd_sim_60_7?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00TF9E6XE&pd_rd_r=fb2641f0-c736-11e8-8198-7d964bea5356&pd_rd_w=GtDju&pd_rd_wg=aCJer&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=18bb0b78-4200-49b9-ac91-f141d61a1780&pf_rd_r=H05JF866M3Z3Y0MEV2JX&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=H05JF866M3Z3Y0MEV2JX

So a tent should be your next purchase.

I have two of these and they do a great job.Tent: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XJQ8LPY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Shortly after getting the tent set up you need to get an oscillating fan and some regulators to tell you temp, humidity, etc.

regulator: https://www.amazon.com/AcuRite-Humidity-Thermometer-Hygrometer-Indicator/dp/B0013BKDO8/ref=pd_sim_86_6?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0013BKDO8&pd_rd_r=5185d750-c735-11e8-83ba-35492fd40af5&pd_rd_w=FfWzV&pd_rd_wg=5opTv&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=18bb0b78-4200-49b9-ac91-f141d61a1780&pf_rd_r=5TDAFKEPVRHZC2TKYA3F&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=5TDAFKEPVRHZC2TKYA3F

Now even in veg, your plants are going to begin to smell. But by flower time you will have a real problem on your hands, even with a tent. So next you will need a carbon scrubber. I use this one off amazon for a tent and have zero complaints while the tent is closed. I also have the filter hanging in the tent and venting out the side into the attic of my rental. Zero smell, unless the tent is open (which you will want to do in the beginning, but over time you will learn to not go in everyday unless you need to). With this item, every other grow you need to replace just the carbon canister part of it. It is easy to do and worth every penny.

Carbon scrubber:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XFRNPR8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Buying all this over time is pretty easy, even on a conservative budget.

Hope this helps!

u/Naaarrfff · 6 pointsr/microgrowery

Have you thought about getting a 2x2 tent? Running with a HLG 100 it should be very manageable and around 250-300 for the setup, mostly from amazon.

You could probably squeeze 2 plants in there although 1 would be more comfortable.

Fabric pots would help with root circling/small pots.

One thing to keep in mind is that smaller pots will need watering more often.

Topping, LST and scrogging would help keep the plant short.

u/IdStillHitIt · 6 pointsr/microgrowery

Make sure you feed her some calcium/magnesium if you're growing in coco. Have fun!

u/Librarycat77 · 6 pointsr/gardening

These heat mats are meant to be used with a device which monitors the temperature and then controlls the amount of current running through them. Like this.

That being said, it shouldn't get to the point where it's melting itself.

u/Cuicos · 6 pointsr/microgrowery

Yes but that's a higher end and overpriced light, with that money you're better off using a COB fixture, you can save a lot of money buying a roleadro 2nd gen and get good results, either their 300 or 600 depending on the area you're looking to cover. Here, and here if you want more quality.

u/babyfacedjanitor · 5 pointsr/microgrowery

Doesn't make much sense tbh. You can buy a roleadro UFO for the same cost as these materials and get twice the wattage without having to buy a bunch of materials and construct a gizmo.

This light is good for 2 plants but you’ll eventually want to add a second for your tent. You definitely can’t fill the tent with just this light, but it’ll get you started.

That will get you started on your first grow or two. I recommend auto blue mystic from nirvana for your first run. They are very low smell while growing so you can get by without a carbon filter. They’re autos so you can leave the light on 24/7, and they finish fast. Also turns out a great finished product.

https://www.nirvanashop.com/marijuana-seeds/815-blue-mystic-autoflower.html

Less than $40 for 5 seeds and very discrete shipping.

When you have a bit more $ you can add on additional items. Eventually you’ll want to upgrade to PFD sun boards or quantum boards, but you’ll probably want to get a fan and filter first:

6" Inline Fan - 395 CFM Exhaust Duct Fan, Built-In Speed Controller, ETL Listed, Pre-Wired 6 FT Grounded Cord - Great Use In Grow Tent With Carbon Filters, Light Fixtures, Intake. Fits 6 Inch Ducts. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01L0D0UEQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_TM13Bb5170NC1

Maybe you can upgrade to a 2x4 tray with reservoir so you can automate feeding.

If you don’t want autoflowers you can just do 12/12 from seed for faster harvest. https://www.royalqueenseeds.com/blog-how-to-grow-cannabis-from-seed-under-12-12-lighting-n330

But I really recommend doing the auto blue mystic for your first round or two.

Second grow. 6 plants. Cherry OG. Emerald Triangle breeder. 4x4 tent active intake and exhaust. Two 440 CFM in-line fans with speed controllers.

600W six COB LED Vero29 3500k

Scrog vegged for 6 weeks. The net is 15” above start of stalk, which is higher than I normally have seen. More veg time and nutes used but I have so much room and it’s just physically easier for me

This is day 16 since 12/12 flip.

Elite garden nute line. Fox Farms Coco Loco in 5 gal fabric pots. Hand water and suck up runoff.

Mykos (added in grow medium and applied on top layer before watering every other time), Azos (added to grow medium and in feeding every other time), Mammoth P, Recharge (every other watering and will stop week 5 or 6), Bio Ag Liquid humic acid, dynagro protekt silica, dynagro mag pro, CalMag (0 ppm starting water)

They are needing water every 2 days now. RH is at ~50%

I added a box fan in the corner of my tent and it’s crazy good. I recommend. I have a 20” and on low setting it’s a gentle breeze AND it cools my light heat sinks. I have a 12” blizzard oscillating fan at pot level. Roots like oxygen.

Have been defoliating a lot. I’ll curve out on that as soon as I stop seeing them crowd. I really don’t want bud rot and want to promote good air flow to every top/bud.

And I like these

https://www.amazon.com/Gro-Pro-Level-Pot-Elevator/dp/B01J37FHF8

I did not pay that amount for mine, but if you can find them, it allows so much air to get under your fabric pots and great drainage. Same as bottom of a milk carton, but this is a good 2.5 inches off the flood tray

Anyone know how much UV-B I should add for more resin production? I read that having a UV-B light on for 4 hours in the middle of the 12 hour light is good but I don’t want to bleach my plants. Thanks!

I see a lot of the ventilation mods for the Photon using the printed backplate for a 4" dryer hose.My wife cannot stand the smell of the resins, and is also very concerned about the long term health effects. So I'm building an enclosure as cheaply as I can.

I've sealed up an Ikea Lixhult ($40) and cut out a 4" hole to attach a hose. I'm probably going to buy the Vivosun Air Filtration Kit as the extractor.

Here's the progress so far.

The cheapest solution I can think of is to use a full spectrum SANSI grow light bulb and put it in a floor up lamp

example of floor lamp with glass shade

Just remember you want a lamp with a glass shade and not plastic as these LED's aren't really meant for this type of application so you don't want any heat/plastic issues. This means spending a little more on a lamp because plastic shade uplights are usually cheaper.

I use these Sansi bulbs for my plants in the wintertime. They are bright and the full spectrum light gives off a nice sunlight kind of feel to them which helps during the dreary winter months.

Grab one of the lamps and see if you like the light. You can always send it back.

u/ClosetCaseGrowSpace · 4 pointsr/microgrowery

I've used both fabric and plastic. In my experience, everything grows much easier in fabric. The pots you linked look fine. You can wash them in the washing machine and re-use them if your wife will let you, lol. I like these pot risers with these saucers. You can remove the run-off with a bucket head.

u/Rouxnoir · 4 pointsr/gardening

A full spectrum LED light is going to be your best balance of light quality, low heat, and light that doesn't look crazy weird.

LED Grow Light Bulb, TaoTronics Full Spectrum Grow Lights for Indoor Plants, Grow Lamp, Plant Lights for Hydroponics, Organic Soil ( 36W, All Wavelengths, FREE E26 Socket) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0748D2SMB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_LYQYAb1WEX1PK

With that said, one of these will be enough to nurture a juvenile plant along, but a mature plant will be straining for a little more then just one bulb can offer. This type of bulb should be used within a couple of inches of the foliage in a perfect world.

u/hatts · 4 pointsr/IndoorGarden

You have a lot of VERY tolerant plants. All of the snake plants, the rubber plant, prayer plant, and ZZ are fine where they are. Like the other commenter said, put the fig right at the window.

Don't get a lamp until some of the plants start proving that they need it. If you do need one, go with this bulb in a basic clamp light setup. This can be kind of an eyesore though.

u/endless_mic · 4 pointsr/Adenium

If you could post a picture of the whole plant and describe the potting medium, estimated hours of direct and indirect sunlight, and your watering schedule, it would be really helpful for making constructive recommendations for this guy.

The usual base line requirements for these guys are lots of light, temperatures above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and well draining potting soil. All three of these factors are indicative of these plants being native to Sub-Saharan Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Enough sun means as much as you can give them, appropriate temperature means not letting the plant stay below 50 degrees for an extended period, and well-draining soil means adding amendments like perlite, pumice, or other small stone like bits. All of these factors combine to allow the plant to get enough but never too much water. Following these general guidelines will keep them from waffling in and out of dormancy (or worse, dying from either frost or root rot), and once you get a feel for what your plant needs, you'll both have a good time. Everybody has their own interpretation of these guidelines, and after a while, you'll be able to gauge the individual needs of your adenium by sight, touch, and other intuitive means.

Personally, I keep my adeniums in full sun for several hours a day from March until the end of October. I can get a way with this because I live in Florida. But, since we do get a handful of light frosts during the winter, I keep them in a makeshift greenhouse with growlights until the weather seems to have completely turned. My potting mix is a combination of humus, coco coir, pumices, and a variety of other bits of mineral substrate. Because my mix is mostly mineral, I fertilize using a product called dyna grow, using about half the regular dose every time I water, which is about once every 10 days. This works for me because of the climate here gets really hot in the summer, and despite being humid, the soil drys out pretty quickly. Like I said above, you'll get a feel for what works best in your environment, and for me, I usually let my plants decide when they need water by gently squeezing the caudex. If it is firm, I hold off on giving them water, and once it has a little give to it, I completely drench the pot.

To embark on your goal of making your adenium "bushier", you'll need to aggressively prune these two long branches down to the desired height. There are several helpful online guides for doing this without too much stress. Pruning will promote the growth of multiple new branches, and will cause caudex enlargement to speed up moderately. Owing to the fact that you're in zone 4b, I'd wait until late spring to do the pruning. After pruning, ease up on watering for about a week or two, and put it outside on days when the temp gets into the 60's. Be careful not to put the plant in direct sunlight for too long until it has adjusted to direct sunlight. To ease into this, start by leaving it somewhere with bright, indirect sunlight, and slowly move it into full sun for longer and longer periods each day. Since it probably won't get warm enough to set this guy outside full time until around June in your area, I'd suggest bringing it inside at night until summer really kicks off and the threat of chilly nights subsides. Alternatively, and what I personally would do in your climate, is buy a decent, but relatively inexpensive, grow light. I have have a lot of success with this light .

Be warned, adeniums are extremely dramatic plants, and often drop all their leaves for what may seem, to you, to be only slight disturbances. Such events include, temperature change, repotting, and sometimes for no reason at all. Don't panic, these are extremely resilient plants that, in a few years (maybe even less) will reward you with some of the most beautiful blossoms you've ever seen.

You're getting started on a really exciting relationship with this little guy, and I wish you the best of luck. If this leads you to the addiction most of us here suffer from, you'll soon want more plants. I have a ton of seedlings going right now, and if you decide you want to raise one, I'd gladly send one your way.

I live downtown too, but in the Commodore Perry, so I can't give advise on LaSalle.

However, groceries aren't too bad if you have a car. The Kroger in Oregon isn't too far, and neither if the one on Monroe by Best Buy (though it is small and cramped). I HIGHLY recommend getting a collapsible wagon though. We bought one the same week we moved in and it's been incredibly valuable for us, especially when we get heavy items like cat litter or pop.

The biggest advice I can give though is to explore. We moved in at the start of last summer and I spent almost all of my free time just walking around. Downtown isn't that large and I never had a problem with anyone being creepy. I played Pokemon Go a lot, but I also spent quite a bit of time by the water just drawing. There are a lot of interesting things in the buildings and architecture downtown that I feel a lot of people don't care about/notice.

Also! If you're not already aware, there is a pretty sweet art supply store downtown called the Art Supply Depo. It's over by Home Slice pizza. There is also Handmade Toledo in uptown and they offer some cool Toledo art and swag, but also a ton of art classes. I can't recommend both enough!

We just sold our truck yesterday and now have no car. We walked to Costco today, and used a little wagon-looking thing to get our groceries home. (I would suggest just taking the bus or uber, but for regular shopping that would get expensive.) You could carpool with someone else or offer to pay for their gas for a trip if they're going to IKEA or something. Great! Looking forward to seeing your new buddy. :)

So, carpet pythons are a tropical species, and as such do require specific temperature ranges and humidity levels. Ideally, it should be about 33c on the warm side, and 22c on the cool side. Normally, people control temperature with thermostats. You put the temperature probe above the heater, inside the warm side's hide, and set the temperature you want it to maintain. Bam - instant temperature control!

The next thing you'll want to do is invest in a digital thermometer and hygrometer combo, ideally something with probes that you can place around the vivarium. This will let you double check temps and humidity around the viv. Long term, the thermostat can measure the warm side and your thermometer/hygrometer can measure it on the cool side.

For humidity, you should be aiming for like 50% - 80%. The hygrometer part of your thermometer/hygrometer measures the humidity level. Grab yourself a spray bottle, fill it with water, and give the viv a good misting when humidity levels get too low.

I'd recommend googling "carpet python care" and reading the entire first page of results. There's a lot of great information from a number of knowledgeable keepers there, and it'll help you figure out which suggestions are actually good, and which ones don't make sense.

Do you mind if I ask what country you live in? Sounds like it probably isn't the US (where I'm from)

u/earthwormjim91 · 4 pointsr/snakes

Humidity should be fine for a corn. The heat mat is most likely the issue.

You should have it on an actual thermostat that will regulate it. Off and on doesn't do any good if it still reaches high temps since it only takes a few minutes for a heat mat to heat up to full temp, which can easily be 110-115 or more. Anything over 105 can cause permanent nerve and brain damage due to them not being able to self regulate their body heat. If you turn it off for 15 minutes 6 times a day, that's still 22.5 hours at full temp.

You also need to measure the actual floor, and not just the substrate. If you have an IR thermometer, move the substrate aside and actually measure the temp of the tank surface. Corn snakes will burrow and if you only measure away from the heat mat you'll never get an accurate temp of what the snake could be laying against if it burrows down to it.

There are absolutely FAR better thermostats than this one, but this is not a terrible one to get and dirt cheap. I hot glue the probe to the floor over the hottest part of the heat mat.

Once when I used a promotion and ordered four 20-lb cat litters plus other groceries. The guy who delivered used a cart, it looked like this https://www.amazon.com/Mac-Sports-Collapsible-Folding-Outdoor/dp/B00BUUUIGK/

I generally use promotions so I can add the $5 saved onto the tip. I rarely tip lower than 15% unless the shopper is a *doozy and they still get 10% despite a lower rating.

*A doozy is someone simply refunding everything and refusing to chat about the substitutions I always list and the comments asking them to please chat with me about the items.

I usually have to go outside anyways since our apt complex gate is temperamental and I often have to use my gate key to let them in. Usually I ask if they want me to carry something. They're always so good about it and refuse my help since they see can me walking with my crazy hip replacement leg that still limps. :-)

  • a collapsible wagon like this one (Collapsible Wagon - Amazon)
  • WIPES, all the wipes
  • camping chairs
  • Bug spray and sunscreen
  • First aid kit with extra bandaids

GROW DETAILS

I have three different strains, Northern Lights, Pre-99 big bud, and pure power plant, and then an unknown seed(which I planted about two weeks ago as the previous unknown seed turned out male, see previous post [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/microgrowery/comments/5qo1yo/early_sign_of_balls_details_in_comments/0. One in each 3-gallon smart pot. For the first two weeks of growing I had an 18/6 light schedule, and then switched to 12/12. (I'm essentially doing 12/12 from as early as the plant could respond to the change in light schedule). Over the past 15 days I watered twice with tiger bloom nutes.

I definitely made the mistake of not listening to your advice when I originally posted and am trying to grow 3 plants in a 1.5X2.5X3 foot tent...It is getting crowded, I should've listened and stuck with one, maybe two plants. Other than that I haven't had any problem that I have noticed other then a few spots of damage on leaves occasionally but no pests or wilting. I'm sure there are things I could've done better though. Thank you for all your help, I can't wait to get to harvest.

IMO the water your putting into your plant is wayyy to acidic. What I would suggest is to get some distilled water from the store, it can be either RO or steam distillation, and then add your nutrient additives. Your plant looks to be suffering from manganese and possibly a few other deficiencies, This is what I personally use and it should help.

All this being said I'm only on my third grow so there's still a lot to learn, hope this helps!

u/rleech77 · 3 pointsr/microgrowery

u/cheerduck · 3 pointsr/succulents

I have a few, I started out with smaller feit LED bars (2ft) and after upgrading to a 4ft shelving unit I now have two 4ft t5 fluorescent units! I am finding it easier to get enough light out of the those, the LEDs need to be very close to the plants. The downside is that the t5 produces a lot of heat so need to make sure ventilation is good or it gets humid.

Here is the link to the t5 unit: https://www.amazon.com/4lamps-DL844s-Fluorescent-Hydroponic-Fixture/dp/B00HEYCRI8/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1478289944&sr=8-5&keywords=t5+grow+light

https://www.amazon.com/4lamps-DL844s-Fluorescent-Hydroponic-Fixture/dp/B00HEYCRI8 these lights are very bright, cheap compared to other lights. They are 250 watts and output more than enough light for your plants up to a max distance of 1 foot from the tip of your plant to the light. they cost around 75 bucks and are well worth the investment

u/Shanew00d · 3 pointsr/haworthia

My plants are inside from around now until Aprilish. I use a 48x18” shelf, 10/20 trays fit on it nicely. There is a cheap clip fan on the end of each shelf that runs 24/7, this is imperative. I have some of these lights and some of these lights– they work fine. They’re on timers for 12 hours or so. The LEDs are tricky because they’re too strong to put very close to the plants, oh well. I have another smaller shelf that’s basically the same set up for cuttings and seedlings.

Edit: fixed link maybe

u/Axelrad · 3 pointsr/HotPeppers

Sure! It's pretty basic, actually. The table is a 4x2' stainless steel table from IKEA. Pretty cheap, but you could do cheaper, I just already had it. The heating pad is the same size (happy coincidence.) The cups are regular solo cups, most expensive element was the lights. You'll also want a timer, I use this one. And finally, the most ghetto part of the whole set up, the tent! I made it out of cardboard, tin foil and duct tape. Gotta save that paper.

Make sure you get a high speed exhaust fan for ventilation and a low speed intake fan to stimulate trunk development
Use smart pots to hold the soil and plant - you should start in a small pot and graduate up to larger ones, but you can also just pop your seed into the big one. Be sure not to overwater.

⛺️: 4x4 is versatile as both veg and flower.

💡: If you want to go new, reasonably priced and show results look at quantum boards (check out r/microgrowery for advice on which) (https://www.horticulturelightinggroup.ca). If not, 400w HID (either Kijiji or Amazon options) including Metal Halide for veg, HPS for flower, will work in that size tent, although you should shoot for 50w/square foot (true watts from the wall). Magnetic ballast is cheaper but more cumbersome, digital is more money but can be dimmed most of the time and switch back and forth from Veg/Flower easily.

Ventilation: 4” or 6” inline fan (for fresh air) ($40 Home Hardware, either one), and a 4” or 6”exhaust w/carbon filter on Amazon, depending on what size tent. Couple of clip on fans and an oscillating fan to circulate (might have to mess with the oscillating with space, or get a wall mount one $$)

Random rambling notes:

You can be as frugal or spend as much as you want with this hobby. I did the half and half approach with sourcing my lights on Kijiji ($50 for 400w hps and $25 for metal halide that I wired to remote ballast) with new tent, fans, medium, fertilizers, ph pen (don’t cheap out), and other accessories, and I could say the initial investment was just at about $1000.

I wish I went with a 4x4 to start for shape and heat dispersion (2x4 is fine for 400w in the winter, harder to control during summer and growing two plants into a rectangle can be a pruning job itself ), 2x4 is fine for 2 big girls comfortably, 3 is a crowd but possible. Or you could go SOG growing method and pack more in, but I like to make table top plants as much as possible. I know this grow is in Canada so go ahead and get 1 or 2 cheap humidifiers for vegging during winter (it’s coming :D), but you’ll have an easy time during flower to keep RH low for flower. Summertime you’ll have an easier time w an air conditioned apartment, it should keep the humidity in check as well. Also get a couple of thermometers for the tent, one maybe with an outside probe to keep outside the tent to check during lights out. Also, you’ll find aluminum tape handy to cover pinhole leaks from less expensive tents (Vivosun is affordable, they have great customer service that will compensate any flaws in their tent w pinhole light, or bite the bullet and get a Gorilla or Mammoth tent 💵 💰). Harvesting is another bag of shit to get, hit me up if you want that list.

Put it on the bottom, just make sure you have a thermostat like this one, with the probe wherever the gecko will be laying above the heating pad. If you use reptile carpet, put it on top of the reptile carpet. Paper towel? On top of the paper towel. Your gecko will be fine as long as you haven't bent the heating pad and it doesn't have any defects. The thermostat would prevent that area from going over temp anyways.

u/KimberelyG · 3 pointsr/snakes

You've got good advice already - thermostat to safely regulate the cage heat (a cheap one like this works), a cool side hide, a warm side hide, lots of clutter (wood, fake plants, etc.) around the cage so your snake can feel securely "hidden" even while not in a hide, and a hygrometer & thermometer (like this one) so you can keep an eye on the cage temperature and humidity. <- (proper humidity is important for ball pythons so they can shed well and so they don't get dehydrated)

For a retained eyecap you can try the old warm-damp-towel-in-a-pillowcase trick: wet a towel with warm water, squeeze it out so it's not sopping wet, drop it in a pillowcase, add your snake, tie closed, and let your snake slither around in there for 15-30 minutes or so. The warmth, moisture, and gentle friction from the towel can loosen stuck shed.

Edit: fixed the links.

Yeah I wasn't sure if one would be enough. I think they're only drawing 250 watts at the wall, so 500 total for the closet. Each panel is 120 5watt epiled LEDs which is how they can market it as "600w" but reality is the drivers are pretty weak. For the price point they seemed good enough at the time.

u/Cowabunco · 3 pointsr/AmItheAsshole

I would have to say yeah, slightly, if you're not willing to do anything at all about it. How much effort you're willing to go through is up to you, but I'll throw out a few suggestions, from low effort to ludicrous:

-try from different places on your balcony, although it's difficult to predict wind against a building.
-smoke out of a different window
-smoke into your range hood or bathroom exhaust fan
-any of the above plus a fan to blow the smoke farther/better
-add a HEPA filter to the fan
-some kind of personal air filter like the smoke buddy
-hack together a tube with fan and activated charcoal (diy version of below)
-blow your smoke through something like this bad boy: https://www.amazon.com/VIVOSUN-Air-Filtration-Kit-Controller/dp/B06XFRNPR8
(maybe they'll even pay for it, I know I probably would cough up a hundred bucks to permanently abate a nuisance that bothered me multiple times a day)

u/nado121 · 3 pointsr/AnycubicPhoton

A proper setup should be able to get rid of any smells, but that wouldn't be a sandwich-sized sponge and your usual 120mm computer case fan. In order for this to work you will need a radial fan and a proper filter like this set. Something smaller would certainly do, but I've never seen anything under 4" diameter.

They key is getting something that provides enough suction toward the exhaust so all the other openings and cracks in the photon's case don't leak any gas. This will in turn increase the volume of your whole setup. Sleeping next to it might be difficult. There's solutions for that, too, if you're willing to spend the time and money.

Thanks! For a lot of red plants co2, fertilizer, and high light will bring out their color a lot more and have them growing pretty fast. I have the 3 extra fixtures on my tank because I got two of those bulbs as gifts, and decided to get a third because I’ve found they do a lot for growth and color on my red plants. Also since this tank is pretty tall, I wanted to add a bit more light than what my beamswork light can do.

The beamswork lights are pretty good for planted tanks especially if you’re on a budget. I got the 36” full spectrum LED fixture for my 40 breeder for about $50 and it works great. If you want a lot of red plants I’d definitely go with a full spectrum WRGB LED fixture like this one. it’s the exact one I use. The one pictured in this post is a different one tho, it’s only got white and blue lights. You can check my previous post here to see what the full spectrum one would look like.

Here is a link to the pink bulbs as well.

u/mrdog23 · 3 pointsr/cannabiscultivation

I got a pair of cheap led light panels on Amazon. A blurple, and a white full spectrum. The blurple sucks and draws a lot of power. The full spectrum is just okay. I added two screw in Taotronics lights I had, and it made all the difference. Heat has also been a big issue for both panels. I've retired the blurple out of frustration with its poor quality.

When I started my garden, I could have gotten better lights, but I cheaped out. I regret that decision. You may be able to buy lights for half the price, but you will get what you pay for.

Fixed Taotronics light name. Added link to a similar light.

Edit: I use my PvN (Phaedra, my first leafy beastie) as my light gauge. If she puts up with the light she's getting, everyone else will survive. It's useful to have That One Plant around if you're concerned about lighting.

Don’t mind at all! I’ll just post the whole setup below:

u/AddictivePotential · 3 pointsr/plantclinic

Terra cotta pots suck the soil dry, I don't use them unless it's for succulents. I would repot this in fresh potting soil inside a different container with a drainage hole. If this guy's soil usually looks this dry, and if it's more than 5ft from a super bright-ass window it won't grow. Everyone severely underestimates how close plants have to be to a window. And no growth is a sure sign of underwatering. If it was getting enough water but not enough sunlight, it would grow, just weirdly.

If you want zero guessing involved, I would read up on what that plant likes and pick up a super cheap moisture and light meter like this one from Amazon. Has saved me a lot of trouble when I have to check if a big plant is dry or if the sunlight isn't strong enough.

u/PSPlants · 3 pointsr/plantclinic

u/Cataractarum · 3 pointsr/houseplants

I also deal with SAD and the lights in my apartment play a huge role how I manage it during the winter.

For plants, look for bulbs that are between 4000-6000K. Kelvin (K) measures color temperature (how warm or cool a light color is). Daylight is roughly between 4500K-6500K.

You'll also want to pay attention to the lumens (lm). Lumens measures how bright/intense a light is. Look for something between 2000lm-4000lm. Lumens is measured closest to the bulb and the intensity of the light reduces drastically the further a plant is from the light source. Higher light plants will prefer being directly under the bulb while lower light plants can be further way (like 2-3ft away :p).

I've been using these. I saw in the reviews that people are successfully using these lights with cacti and succulents. They've been working well for my plants (monstera, cat palm, pilea, scindapsus, sanseverias, etc.) and I love how bright my plant corner is.

I'm using this lamp cord with this grow light and these smart outlets for my monstera. Granted its a new addition so I dont have time to say if it works but I dont see why it wont. I have it around 2-3 feet above its upper most leaves and fashioned a shade out of black paper my wife had (its VERY bright). The outlets let me set a timer or turn it on and off remotely for whatever reason.

u/HonkMafa · 3 pointsr/Hydroponics

Here it is just prior to harvest, showing the 3 buttercrunch plants, the lamp, and the 3 romaine ports covered with foil. I may have re-positioned the lamp a bit because I was trying to move things around in there, but that is how close it was. There is another light off to the right over my carrot "crop."

Here it is in early April (first pic).

Buttercrunch on the right, Romaine on the left (I rotated the tote at some point). Color a bit washed out due to lamps. The little lettuce plant off to the right in dirt was sprouted the same day as the others and was watered with same nutes, just plainly not growing as fast as those in hydro. I still have it and it is still pretty sad.

Romaines were harvested twice before they started giving up. I removed them, covered up those 3 holes and let the buttercrunch have the whole thing for the last few weeks.

Here is the tote.

Hope that covers everything!

  1. Depends on the resin, some are smellier than others.
  2. Yup that would work, or there's an adapter on thingiverse that allows you to attach 4 inch hose with a extractor fan (that's what I use) and it outputs through a carbon filter. I use this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XFRNPR8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and use the printer in a small 1 bedroom apartment without issue.
  3. See above :)
  4. Yes but it's near useless. You really have to go with a secondary fan/filter combo to get any serious filtration.
u/speqtral · 2 pointsr/outdoorgrowing

The exhaust is 4'' x 14''..

My budget has been pretty tight due to unexpected medical bills, that's the only reason I was hoping to make due with a 4" filtration system. That's a solid suggestion though and I may be able to cut some corners elsewhere to make that work.

u/FiainTheCorgi · 2 pointsr/succulents

Another question - this one about grow lights. It gets pretty cloudy here, sometimes for weeks at a time, and I figure I would rather prep and make sure my new plants are getting enough light now so when winter comes it won't be an issue (Illinois does not get much sunlight then). My windowsills are small, though, so I'd like to set up a rack in the corner of the kitchen with lights and expand a bit. It won't be a huge area though.

I found these two grow lights and I'm not sure if one would be significantly better? The flexible one would be nice and more space efficient for me but would getting the bulb and a cheap desk lamp be better for the plants?

This is what has been recommended to me and seems to work:

Dwarf white or dwarf purple isopods are a good bet because they are generally too small for the ackie to notice and are tolerant of the high temperatures in the cage. I would consider getting maybe 10-20 and establishing a culture in a tupperware tub before introducing some into your ackie's enclosure. I have also had good luck with powder orange isopods. All three of these isopod types appear to breed pretty quickly so they should take off.

As far as springtails go, as with the isopods you want to establish a culture and let the population grow for a little bit before you begin adding bunches into the enclosure.

Some other tips:

  • Add magnolia leaves (or any other good hardwood leaf) to your enclosure. As they decay they feed your isopods/springtails, but I also like them because they look nice in the enclosure and they appear to add enrichment for the ackie. My ackie likes to sniff them, flip them over, rustle them, just generally interact with and explore them. I got a bag of magnolia leaves off amazon.

  • I was advised to get cuttlebone or sepia bone and place tiny bits in my cultures and the places in the enclosure where my isos/springtails hang out most. These items are super calcium rich, and isos/springtails benefit from it.

  • Ensure your substrate is moist. Do not let it be super damp (especially toward the top,) but the substrate should be dark and more cakey down toward the bottom of the enclosure. I invested in a gardener's moisture meter to make sure the soil is moist enough.

  • When misting or adding moisture to your substrate, consider using filtered water rather than plain tap water. If your tap water is well water or something, it may not be necessary, but for a lot of people like me unfiltered municipal water has a lot of chlorine and things in it that can be detrimental to the balance of the soil.

Here are some helpful videos that should give you all the general info you need for establishing a bioactive enclosure:

  • How to culture springtails

  • How to create a bioactive desert terrarium for ackies

If you think it might be a watering issue (which it sounds like from the other comments), I really recommend a moisture meter to help you understand what's going on in the soil! With a pot that big, it's hard to tell how wet or dry things are--the "top 2 inches" rule doesn't really work.

I just got this one, but there are some even cheaper options on Amazon if you don't want the light/pH readings.

u/DrPsyc · 2 pointsr/plantclinic

has there been any improvement over the past month? HERE is an article about proper care for your plant.

You stated that you only water when it seems dry but the article suggests once a week deep watering so that may be an issue. you also dont want to risk over watering so make sure your pot has good drainage at the bottom.

I highly suggest getting one of THESE and placing it in the pot to keep an eye one the light, water, and Ph levels.

u/RondaSwanson · 2 pointsr/IndoorGarden

Can you spend $10-15 on a moisture sensor like this ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BR52P26/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) ? That will be the easiest and most accurate way to see if your plant is too dry/wet. If it is drying out that quickly it may be in too small a pot, and you could consider repotting.

I have been growing a bunch of different plants at my cubicle desk at work - which means nowhere near enough sunlight even for a spider plant - and that includes quite a few cottonwood seedlings who are all doing very well.

I use an LED grow light at home and and the office desk that does a lot for plants.

>Bulb: https://www.amazon.com/SANSI-Daylight-Spectrum-Sunlight-Greenhouse/dp/B07BRKG7X1/
>
>Lamp: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HX2EVPS/

It is a full spectrum light that is in the same range as natural sunlight. It has been perfect for me, every plant I have put under it has started putting out new growth almost right away and bends toward it just like they do with the sun. (Which is how I am getting interesting curves in my seedlings.)

You do need to keep the lamp about 16 to 18 inches from the plant to get the full amount of light for it though, but it will not put off any amount of heat worth worrying about.

u/dillishis · 2 pointsr/GrowingMarijuana

If anyone would like to chime in, this is the grow light I’ve been using.

It gets full morning sun for about three-four hours and then I move it into a spare room and it stays under that.

u/rooorooorawr · 2 pointsr/houseplants

For a very wide palm, I'd use 2 grow lights, each angled at it from above. However, if you hang a strong enough light up to 24" directly above, it should still benefit. The lower fronds would naturally receive dappled light anyway. I'd monitor it for etiolation, then maybe decide if I want 2 lights instead.

It's true that the bulbs must be quite close to the plants. 24" is as far as I would go. LED lights can be a bit farther away than fluorescent. I use 40 watt LED grow lights to supplement sunlight. Even my plants that sit over 24" away appear to benefit. The closest plants grow the best, though. My lights are in a clamp light and a normal lamp.

I use this one, as I prefer white light:

https://www.amazon.com/SANSI-Daylight-Spectrum-Sunlight-Greenhouse/dp/B07BRKG7X1/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=31BY0GSV495O8&keywords=sansi+grow+light&qid=1556076681&s=gateway&sprefix=sansi+grow&sr=8-3

Edited to add: light reflection makes a huge difference. A silver or white reflector would reduce wasted light. My clamp light reflects the light with its aluminum shade. My lamp has a white shade interior.

Sansi makes the best grow lights, they’re LEDs so they use very little power, don’t generate a lot of heat, and can be used in any fixture standard fixture. You can get them in 10W, 15W, 24W, 30W, 40W and so on, they even make some huge square ones, I use a 70W for a tree I’m overwintering.

Absolutely, I think it would really do some good for them! I recently got my grow lights for my winter / fall set-up and they've been working wonders. I've gotten 2 happy blooms in response and tons of compact growth and sun stress.

I've been using these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RTVD1HJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 They're bright white like natural light and very strong and effective. They can be pretty close to your plants and not scorch them, and produce a moderately warm heat (it never gets to be too much from being on 16 hours) which I've found helps protect them from getting too cold since I keep my apartment kind of chilly!

I've also seen a cheaper option, used as a single lamp bulb by a reddit user in r/haworthia here. It's a lower price point and I nearly got it for a starter grow light. If you're wary of spending too much, I'd recommend this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BRKT56T/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_4VprDbKA7T01X they've said a lot of good things about it!

u/aredua · 2 pointsr/houseplants

I use a 30W SANSI Grow Light for my succulents and a 15W bulb for tropical plants on a different shelf. They fit into a standard lamp socket. The light is very bright and white, which I prefer. It was pricey but my plants are doing a lot better since I started using these bulbs a month ago.

u/innerbootes · 2 pointsr/plants

Sure, I got the 24W. Sansi also sells them via their website. You should figure out your requirements before buying, they have a variety of wattages.

A 200W metal halide equivalent Horticulture Lighting Group Quantum Board might be worth a look.

This isn't bad. The price is pretty reasonable, and it will do fairly well in a smaller area.

u/renaissance_x · 2 pointsr/videography

Hey, I'm not OP, but thanks for the link I haven't seen these lights before.

Would you or anyone have input on an alternative cob light meant for plants that has similar properties and a substantially lower price? I have been thinking about getting a set of these for my photos. $450 for 3 vs $700 for 3. No mount for a tripod or stand, but I was thinking about using the 4 corner holes to attach some small bars or cable-wire for 4-way adjustment.

Also if you are really having a hard time finding full enough sun you could try to order some lights for the plant, these I've heard are decent. https://www.amazon.com/Upgraded-Dimmable-Spectrum-Adjustable-Gooseneck/dp/B07H57K565/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=led+plant+light&qid=1566226877&s=gateway&sr=8-4 There are other sufficient ones on amazon but I think these are the least expensive (still $19), and have a timing function.

Thank you! Do you happen to know anything about grow lights? It’s always rainy in PA so I think that’s also contributing. Do you think this 60W Full Spectrum option is sufficient?

But my plants don’t love it, they kind of put up with it. They seem to do better with this light but they only come with two heads and the cart needs three for good coverage.

Hope this helps you decide on one! I know how tedious it is to pick some lamps out, especially online.

I bought this one a couple weeks ago, it works great so far. My only complaint is it doesn't have a timer or anything built in. I just bought this also (I have a lot of plants to cover lol), I think the light spectrum might be different, and it also has a timer built in so you can set it to stay on for 6 or 12 hours or something. They both are able to just clamp on to the edge of your bookshelf.

You could also get a power strip with a timer built in, that way you can plug the light(s) into it and they'll come on each day automatically, and you don't have to worry about buying a specific light with one included.

I recently picked up a few of these and absolutely love them: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07LG39B3M

Not hawking them, but not having to live with a purple glow all the time has been awesome, and my plants love it at least as much as the red/blues. I know a lot of people use them, but this little greenhouse / LED combo has been amazing as well: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FZTKYXV

Not a solution for carrying gear while shooting but the best purchase I ever made when shooting weddings was a fold-able wagon like this:

No more lugging my heavy bags around all day and wagon folds up to fit nicely in the truck of my car.

I would double check and make sure, but I think my buddy and I only had one camping pass. Basically, it's for your parking your car.

If you're forrest camping, I'd suggest getting one of these, or something like it.

Edit: As per their website: "Forest Camping Parking: Patrons with a Forest Camping pass will be able to park one car per camping pass in a nearby lot," and the same goes for Car Camping, etc.

I'm using one of these to haul my stuff in and out. I'm gonna have to move my computer quite a few times times since I'm getting in on Monday and leaving Monday after(up to the hotel room, down to the byoc, back up to the hotel room during tear down and then out to the car Monday morning). That walk would get old real fast if I had to carry it each time. I especially like it because the inside is entirely canvas and padded on the bottom. It was a little expensive but worth it. I'll use it for beach/camping trips the rest of the year.

Thanks for the explanation, I guess I kind of already knew this but just wasn't sure. This is exactly what I was looking for!

Normally I have 4 inch inline going during the day, but it currently turns off at night... I know I need to change it to always on. And a 6 inch circular that is always on and not facing them. The inline makes a good breeze where the intake is next to the bigger plant

u/skoomd1 · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

Well if an ounce is all you want, check out /r/SpaceBuckets. I could never get myself to do it as growing a weed plant, even just 1, is a huge investment of your time, resources, and effort. I think about it like: If I can get 1-2oz from a spacebucket in the same 3-5 months time, why not invest money that'll make itself back twice over just the first grow (even if you dont sell any, to me getting 1000$ of weed from my grow is making my 1000$ back but ima stoner lol)
and spend my 3-5 months growing 16-20oz.

Ya know? But I can understand why some people can't or dont want to.

u/traptito · 2 pointsr/GrowingMarijuana

Well, I wouldn't buy a tent kit/package. You could go with a 24"x24" tent like this one then buy your light and carbon filter/inline fan seperate.

iPower is a good inexpensive brand to start with for your fan/filter. A 4" fan is more than enough for that size.

As for your light a Quantum board leds are the most efficient lights out now but Cobs (chip on board) are great too.

Add a little clip fan for air circulation and you're all set!

Hello there, I recently started growing and purchased all new items. The fan you chose simply won't work. You will be very disappointed in the performance. I was going to use that fan as an inflow booster with a pre-filter. I quickly returned it because it just did not move enough air. The fan could not create positive pressure in the tent. I then tried this fan: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01M7S46YZ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1495901534&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=4+inch+inline+fan&dpPl=1&dpID=41G0I96VBVL&ref=plSrch

I ended up returning that one as well because it was advertised as 200cfm and it was not moving anywhere near the same air amount as the first fan I bought. I then broke down and bought the same fan I originally purchased as my outflow fan and filter. I bought just the fan for 56.00 as an inflow fan and put a pre-filter on it.

I just recently brought all of my plants in for winter and upgraded my light setup to 4 T5 fluorescent bulbs at 6500 kelvins. Does this look like an appropriate height to keep it above the plants? The jade is about 3 inches from the bulbs so I'm a little worried about damage. I've been thinking about moving the jade to another window and just lowering lights closer to the rest of the plants. Also any advice on how long to keep them under lighting every day would be useful!

Just in case anyone was curious where I got this setup. It feels very sturdy and I'm definitely glad I bought it. I'd just recommend buying longer chains to hang it since the ones they provide are pretty short.

It's actually my bedroom. I'm limited on Space and it's hard to strike a balance between bedroom and jungle lab so I've mostly given up and you can see which way it's gone. ..

As for the lights I can tell you which ones I've been getting but I don't feel like I have used them long enough to actually recommend them. If that makes sense. They were 75 for the 4' 4 bulb model.

I also use screw in led bulbs in places and led clip lamps in others. There are also finex led 24/7 aquarium lights.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HEYCRI8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I hate mirrors but I've started putting them behind plants to bounce more light. The inexpensive sort of generic full length mirrors go well on the back of 4' shelves. Dollar stores seem to frequently sell small plain mirrors to go behind individual plants.

Fwiw I'm also loving this humidifier https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M4O49V9/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 the plants are happier and the mammals including humans breathe better with it. I'm a big fan of humidifiers in general though. Years ago I got tired of low humidity. It's such a small investment compared to the financial cost of losing plants. Plus the frustration and sadness of unhealthy ones...

u/UnearthedApparatus · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

Last watering was 2 days ago, soil is dry now. Was holding off just in case it was over watered. Current temp is 79F w/ 35% humidity. It's hard to get it to go past that humidity.

I had a look on Amazon.com and the "Amazon choice" one at $49.99 would be sufficient for 1 plant in enclosed conditions like a spacebucket.

https://www.amazon.com/Rolledro-Lights-Indoor-Spectrum-Hydroponics/dp/B00RWYCRB2

Then you will want to get a 5630 led strip for side lighting. Like this:

https://www.amazon.com/LEDMO-Flexible-Daylight-Waterproof-brightness/dp/B01339G2F6

Although I wouud recommend searching on Amazon for "5630 led strip" and looking for one that is both waterproof, adhesive backed and has a usb connector for easy installation. The one I linked is just the LED strip on its own.

u/nfhiggs · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

at 55 true watts times 2 (or 3), you'd get decent coverage without blasting your plant with too much light.

u/SenorFluffy · 2 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

This is the LED that I used: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RWYCRB2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Using a UFO LED is pretty great for a spacebucket since it fits well in the cover, and they're not too expensive. I would use this with the blackout guide that is stickied.

u/BanginNLeavin · 2 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

I am using a 138w UFO in my first grow. The plants are doing nice, I am sure more watt would be good but it suits its purpose of being a cheap intro.

UFO

Strip Light

I would say this intensity is suitable for seedling. The strip lights are between 0.1 inch and 5 inches from the leaves and the UFO is about 7 inches from the canopy right now and its fine.

I will be buying stuff for a second bucket and refining my technique and I will opt for a brighter UFO, thinking whether I should reorder the LED strip or not though as it seems like its good.

u/treefarmercharlie · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

Yeah, that looks like it's still in veg to me. Have you thought about investing in a tent? They really aren't that expensive and even the cheap ones do a decent job of blocking the light enough. $106.30 at 39% off now the 4x4 is cheaper than the 3x3. I love my 3x3, it's just the right size for four plants, but if you have the space the 4x4 gives a little more space and options with it. The 2x4 is short which is a little more difficult to work with.

u/bekindrewind · 2 pointsr/snakes

You don't need a "night light", you want your snake to have darkness at night. Light and heat should be from two separate sources, and make sure your heat source is always controlled by a thermostat. If your room does not receive ambient lighting from a window, etc. you can use something as simple as a clamp lamp with an led light bulb screwed into it, plugged into an outlet timer. As long as the light is not overly bright (grow lights or aquarium fixtures can be too bright) and your snake has a place(s) to seek shelter this will work fine.

u/tensecondsflat_ · 2 pointsr/cornsnakes

I am a huge fan of these thermostats. I have three for my snake's viv-- one dangling under the heat lamp at the point she could slither to, one against the glass where the heat mat for the warm side is, and one against the glass where the heat mat for the cool side is (my house runs too cold, so I keep lamp+mat for the warm side both set to one temp, and mat on cool side set to a lower temp).

u/2capp · 2 pointsr/Sourdough

I tend to keep my apartment around 70F, which wasn't enough to keep my starter decently active. I bought a seed germination mat with a thermostat and put it in a plastic storage bin. Works great to keep my starter temp consistent and doubles as a proofing bin when I'm baking.

I wouldn't put too much stock into anything you read on yahoo answers. I've used CHEs for a number of years without issue. Depending on the wattage, I've measured over 500 degrees on the surface of the CHE but ceramics can withstand extremely high temperatures. A defective CHE with a bubble in the material could easily explode and I'm sure it happens but it seems rare. If you are concerned, there are very reliable and affordable thermostats available online. Just make sure you are using a light fixture with a ceramic socket so it can withstand the heat of the CHE. I use this thermometer and put it at the very beginning of his cool end/toward the middle of his tank. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072XHJLFD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ucoYDbZK5D6HA

There are more expensive ones that are reptile specific out there, but this has never failed me. Just be sure you have a stat for each heat source and have the probes positioned appropriately https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E9IO6N0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_EdoYDbE9C22BR

Also might be worth getting a temp gun. They’re accurate and can give you exact readings for spots they hang out most.

u/Pontlfication · 2 pointsr/mead

I use a fair bit of blankets and a plant germinating mat with a temp probe. I think I paid 20-30$ for that mat, and blankets/towels from a second-hand store. If the room is cold enough, you shouldn't need a freezer. It will be less effective but much cheaper. Something like this, mat not included.

u/MSRT · 2 pointsr/reptiles

Get yourself a heat mat and a cheaper thermostat. I use these when I need a cheaper option. I also have a second probe thermometer to monitor the temps since I don't completely trust the cheaper thermostats. But I've used them for years without any issues, so I haven't found anything to justify my distrust. I just like to be doubly sure. (:

For the shedding, the most important thing to help your leo is a humid hide. My girls get enclosed hides (something with a base and only a hole entrance) with sphagnum moss. I mist the moss until damp every other day or as needed. I live in a very arid environment (usually around 20%) and don't do anything else for my leos humidity wise except their hides. They very rarely have any shedding issues. One girl actually came to me with horrible chronic shed problems (she lost 3/4ths of her poor little toes to stuck shed), but with her humid hide she's not had any problems since!

If you don't have one already, there are guides to making your own humid hide. You can get a tupperware container with a lid, place it on it's top and cut a hole in the side where the leo can get in. Stuff it with a bit of moss and mist it and there you go! There are hides sold specifically for humidity, and I find my girls prefer the dark hides to the clear tupperware, but it sounds like your boy needs something ASAP.

Edit: to answer your question more. I only step in for stuck shed with my leos if it has been a few days. Once in a while they will have some left over for awhile after a shed, but they usually take care of it themselves. Toes and noses can be tricky and can take some time. If they have a humid hide they'll use it to help soften the remains. When I do have to step in, I use a wet cotton swab after a soak. You can try dripping water onto his nose to soften the shed first.

We use these for our bearded dragon and hedgehog, but there's no reason you couldn't just plug a space heater into it. I agree there's not really a need for a "smart" solution here.

This is my setup, my fan is coming in today and my seedlings sprouted this morning. I did quite a bit of research and The light is a little underpowered but I was on a pretty tight budget and can always add more light later.
I spent $40 on seeds and super soil mix from Mephisto genetics, going a more organic route and won't require nutes.
I also spent about $30 on peat moss, perlite, and compost. I already had some ducting and pots.

I don't know about strips, but this is probably the 'cheapest' light that will be effective, it draws 250 watts. To stay low budget, you could use PC case fans. It depends on how stealth you need to be. If you need a filter for the smell, you might have to go with a legit ventilation kit which would be another $100 on Amazon. like this one

u/shadowonyx23 · 1 pointr/SpaceBuckets

Carbon filter eliminated nearly all odor. I went the first 3 or so weeks without it, then the smell started coming on strong as it was starting to preflower. Bought the filter and it was night and day. Highly suggest it.

I imagine you could purchase these activated charcoal sheets that you can cut to size! Tape a plate with a hole over it and you should be able to cut any size you want. The fan you spec'd looks like it should be able to handle the load that the charcoal filter will cause (it is going to be like trying to breathe through a straw rather than just your mouth).

Another option would be something like this where you have an all in one filter/blower system. It's more money but it will handle all that obstruction better. Alternatively you can go to a harware store and buy an inline duct booster. You should be able to control the fan speed with a big triac or possibly PWM signal.

if you are aware of overwatering i assume you aren't doing it. letting the soil dry out some before watering. like only once or twice a week?

Here's the link again to my first album after initial setup for reference: http://imgur.com/a/fvzkZ

  1. I used round PVC mainly due to availability, price, and associated parts. I saw a design that allowed for the adjustment of the water level within the pipes by rotating the end collar on the round PVC and I liked that approach. There are way to accomplish this with a flat channel system also, but I found this method acceptable. As far as my research has shown, a "proper" NFT system does use flat bottoms (as seen in pretty much all commercial operations), but the round PVC approach is very common for hobbyists like myself. I can't comment on very detailed reasoning for the true "film" technique on the bottom of flat pipes vs round. It appears to me though that people get plenty of good results out of both setups, so I personally wouldn't (and didn't) get too hung up on it.

  2. In the linked gallery above, the 5th image (this one: http://i.imgur.com/KSkFZEc.jpg) you can get a decent look at how the water is sent to the pipes. Most pumps vary, but I basically used a piece of flex tube to connect from the pump output to an adapter into the ball valve, then from there pieced together with various connecting parts, a threaded riser pipe used in irrigation, and then three of these: Riser Adapter. There are probably a million different ways, this is just what I came up with and it's working fine without leaks (plumber's tape.. use it).

  3. I spaced my holes 6". This seems to be a commonly recommended spacing for leafy greens. I staggered the outer pipes (with 8 holes each) 6" from the inner pipe (has 7 holes) to maintain this spacing. Yes, more space will be better for larger plants, but I don't ever plan to use this setup for anything but various lettuces primarily, and some other leafy greens. Seems like most people grow larger plants that may require more spacing in different systems completely though, like DWC buckets, dutch buckets, etc.

Hope this helps. I spent many hours on and off for a year researching before pulling the trigger on this system. In case you are wondering, here's the light I bought: Light It seems to be working very well so far with good output (~20,000 lumens) for 216 watts.
u/Mitten_Punch · 1 pointr/microgrowery

If you can put a little money into this, you'd get better veg out of a 4' T5 fixture, and it'll put out more heat. Keep the tent pretty much closed up, with a vent on the bottom barely open and a 6" duct fan hooked to a Programmable Thermostat venting out the top. While it's cold, you can set the fan only to kick on at 80 degrees or something, so you aren't venting out warm air constantly. You do need some airflow, and the thermostat makes it a "set and forget" kind of thing. So you aren't baking plants on an unusually hot day, or taking away their heat on cold nights.

Other ideas:

  • Have the tent sitting on some kind of insulation. Cardboard is better than nothing. Styrafoam is best.

  • A cheap heating mat under the plants, if you can't get the inside above 55 degrees at all times.

  • 1020 planting trays to collect water runoff. 4 of these fit nicely in a 2x4'. Or just use the cheap circular planters from any garden shop.

  • For little veg tents, I just rest a power strip on top and plug everything into it. Keeps electric away from any water, and out of your way.

  • Not sure what water drainage you would need? You don't need to water to crazy amounts of runoff right now. And, if you are in trays or planters, the extra water will get absorbed by the plants. If you are holding these in 3g pots for 8 weeks, make sure they are cloth pots. Then the plants can easily drink their own runoff. And you won't get rootbound.

  • 8 weeks is a long time. You can fill a 2x4' with two plants in 8 weeks from seed. And I mean, wall to wall, lights pinned at the top and leaves burning because they grow into them anyway. Don't be scared to trim/train a bunch.

edit: Last thing. Not an outdoor grower, but in 8 weeks you'll have 4' tall plants that aren't "hardened" to sunlight. That'll be a process. As will supporting the plants. These will likely need trellising straight away.
u/TeffyWeffy · 1 pointr/succulents

if they're long shelves most people just get a long hanging thing and put 2-4 T5 bulbs in it.

https://www.amazon.com/4lamps-DL844s-Fluorescent-Hydroponic-Fixture/dp/B00HEYCRI8

This for example. You can get 1,2, or 4 bulb fixtures, and in lengths of 2 or 4 feet. Can find at any big box store, or online for not too bad. then just buy some daylight bulbs for them.

If you want more of a Square format, you can buy 1000-1200 watt LED's that will do a 3x3 or 4x4 foot area for between $40-60.

If you don't have many plants you can always scale down for smaller options in both.

u/Rekov · 1 pointr/SavageGarden

I like it alright. It's pricier in comparison to the fluorescent lights. I have these two at the moment, though only the latter is in that grow shelf set up:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WDJ7LG2/ (The advantage of this one is that it has two on/off switches so you can control half of the bulbs separately. It also has a power plug that you can plug another light in to.
https://smile.amazon.com/4lamps-DL844s-Fluorescent-Hydroponic-Fixture/dp/B00HEYCRI8 (This one is only two inches tall, so you can fit it into a grow shelf without losing as much headroom. The bulbs are connected by little cords at each end instead of over the top, and it only has one on/off switch and no plugs.

The thing to keep in mind is that the fluorescent lights are all about 1 ft x 4 ft, while the LED light is only 12.6x7.9x3 inches. I could fit three of the LED lights into the same space as one of the fluorescent lights. You can look at that as good or bad, I guess, since it means it's more expensive, but you can also get much brighter coverage over all if you invest in it.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the LED light is fairly loud. The fluorescent light is completely silent, while the LED is louder than a gaming desktop. They can supposedly be modded with quieter cooling fans though, if that matters.

u/macromicrogreens · 1 pointr/phoenix

Buy a light, you can screw the first one into any normal lamp or light fixture and this will keep a couple small plants or a whole head of hydroponic lettuce thriving. Or just go huge like me and get the second one. and grow tons of greens.

I use this high quality, organic soil that you only have to add tap water to (no nutes or pH - this is NOT the case with all soils, however).

You could literally just throw some of that in a pot in a closet, then hang a light like this from the clothing bar that you would normally put hangers and whatnot on and just add water whenever the soil gets dry.

You should get some high quality bud from that setup for pretty cheap. Wont yield much with only that light, but you can add another light on the next grow or when you have more $$$.

Is this total overkill? Will it work? Ack. I don't want to have to mess with an exchange unless necessary.

u/aesthetics247 · 1 pointr/microgrowery

Don't forget a speed controller! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006NGI8VS/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

this one's highly recommended and people say it helps reduce the humming on the inline fan compaerd to cheaper speed controllers.

I'm sure the apollo tents are fine, I've heard slightly better reviews for the vivosun tents. This one's about $12 more than yours i think. https://www.amazon.com/VIVOSUN-Horticulture-Hydroponic-Obeservation-Growing/dp/B01DXYMQ9M/ref=sr_1_2?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1478889774&sr=1-2&keywords=vivosun+48

The Mars 300 is chill for the price, you probably want to want to get a second one if you're going to have multiple plants in that tent. People say 1 mars 300 per plant should get you good results, almost pushing it with two full plants under a single mars 300.

Also if and when possible, try to invest in a good pH meter. everyone recommends bluelabs! https://www.amazon.com/Bluelab-Ultimate-Solution-Measuring-Temperature/dp/B008R7OWJS/ref=sr_1_3?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1478889906&sr=1-3&keywords=bluelabs+ph+pen

Hey! As always, thanks to everyone for helping me get better at this hobby.

As you can see from the album, I've got one clone of the Cookie Shots from the Unofficial Good Guys. Other than the yellowing of the leaves, which I can't quite figure out, the grow has gone pretty well so far. My last plants seemed to take FOREVER to get from this stage to harvest so we'll show it goes with my new kick ass 3VL light fixture. The difference between this and my old setup is staggering.

My last grow with two plants and the budget setup yielded something in the neighborhood of six ounces, and I'm hoping to replicate that yield with this single plant given the new light. We'll see.

I've never had any issues with yellowing leaves before, and I don't think it's a big concern, but if any of you experts know more than I do please chime in and let me know your thoughts. Grow details are below if anyone gives a rip.

here is the thermostat that I have always used. it’s a good price and I haven’t had any issues with it

and here are the thermometer/hygrometer combos that I use. one on the hot side, and one on the cool side.

u/Daendis · 1 pointr/reptiles

Thermostats are different from thermometers. Thermostats regulate the temperature while thermometers measure it. Non-digital thermometers are also known to be inaccurate. A thermostat like this would be perfect: https://www.amazon.com/iPower-40-108%C2%B0F-Thermostat-Controller-Germination/dp/B01E9IO6N0/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=thermostat+seed&qid=1562452127&s=gateway&sr=8-3

u/squishybloo · 1 pointr/hognosesnakes

You absolutely MUST regulate your temperature with a thermostat/rheostat. They are very cheap, buy one right now. You put the thermometer probe on the bottom of the inside of the enclosure, and set it to the proper temp of ~90F.

I would advise moving your hognose out of the 20 gallon tank - it's far too big for a baby - and moving it into a plastic bin instead. They hold heat much better to keep the ambient around ~80F, as well. Something closer to this will work much better for your snake while it's young and less than ~12" long. You will want to punch holes in it for air flow. I'd also suggest changing to 2-3" of aspen bedding, since hognoses like to burrow and walnut will not hold burrows.

Caution, you want to run your space heater on a low to medium setting. The thermostat can't handle anything above 10ampers

u/Splatini · 1 pointr/Hedgehog

I haven't heard of anyone using those. It looks interesting but a couple things I can think of:

If that power symbol on the top left is a light, it may disturb your hedgehog.

It says it has two heat settings with a built-in thermostat. If those settings aren't an appropriate temperature, you may need an additional thermostat. Redundancy is always good with heaters anyway in case of failure.

I wouldn't place it within reach of the hedgehog despite it saying zero clearance.

I've found Repticarpet gets messy quickly, especially when your gecko goes for a dip in their calcium dish and tracks it everywhere. I personally use non adhesive shelf liner for the bottom of my tank and add a few stones from the pet store for texture for my little one to run around upon.

I suggest using a temperature gauge to make sure the heat mat doesn't burn them. I like to get them for cheap. I've bought 6 and have loved them all. You typically stick the probe between the mat and the glass, and set the temperature accordingly. This is what I use: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E9IO6N0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ELKYDbN9JM51K is the one I use

I also use sphagnum moss in the moist hide as it holds humidity better, but paper towels will get the job done so long as you're properly moistening them.

I recommend the Flukers heat mat. It's non adhesive, so you'll want to purchase HVAC tape. This is tape that can be found at most hardware stores. It is made out of adhesive and aluminum foil, so it can easily handle the high temperatures. you can find it in the plumbing section. I've used the heat mats that come with the stickiness on them only to bend and break them when trying to deep clean the tank (I'm not gentle), so this will let you avoid having to replace them as often.

As it's winter, if you find their ambient air falling low, you can always invest in a ceramic heat emitter.

I also suggest using a digital thermometer to gauge the temperature of the air within the tank. You can find these online anywhere between 10 dollars and 100. I have a simple one and it's done the job. This has also helped me with ensuring that I have the heat mat at the right temperature, in case some heat gets lost through the glass and I have to raise the temperatures using the thermometer.

As someone else has said, it's better to avoid loose substrate when at all possible, such as sand or dirt, especially if you're just starting out. This will minimize risk of impaction.

And If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out. C:

I'd say your thermostat is broken, if it goes over the set 90f you put in, it should be shutting off, not continuing to heat. Maybe try contacting the company to see if they have suggestions or if they can just replace it? I use a viviarium electronic thermostat for my rack but that would probably be overkill for you. I have used this one before for other species and it works pretty well! What do the tank temps get in the cooler side with the CHE off? does your house stay warm enough to rely on heat pad alone?

u/Shaylios · 1 pointr/BallPythons

Thank you all so much for the advice!

I'm really strapped for money right now, so I'm going to try and make her tank work for as long as possible. I put a little amazon shop list together with some of the recommended products - please feel free to take a look and recommend other suitable products. http://a.co/b2h5atL

In the list, I've got multiple different fake plants, some black 1 entrance hides, a complete hide with 4 sides and just a hole, multiple digital thermometers / hygrometers, a kitchen scale, coconut fiber, aspen bedding, a ceramic heat emitter with dome, and a thermostat
(I had already bought this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01E9IO6N0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
would it be suitable? Or should I return it to get the one on the shopping list?)

She does have one of those metal screen tops, but we put a few boxes and such on top for extra security. I may pick up some insulation pads at my local Lowes and attach them to the outsides of the tank to help keep the heat in. Thoughts on that?

Sarah is eating okay. So far we've been giving her 1 little fuzzy each Saturday. Hopefully when I get the scale I'll be able to more accurately assess the food weight vs hers.

Her shed has come completely off! I gave her a nice warm soak shortly after the photos had been taken, and it was like she just wiggled out of it. Hopefully with the substrate change and the addition to the 4 sided humid hide, I won't need to soak her and she can just do her own thing.

When it comes to the ceramic heat emitter, is 60 watts enough? I'm afraid of burning her. The cage is only about a foot tall, and it would have to be in one of those dome lamps that sit attached to the screen. I've been leaning towards getting the "Zoo Med Deluxe Porcelain Clamp Lamp" for the bulb. Has anyone had any experience with this? Will they work together?

I'm absolutely horrified of any fire risks (my house had burnt down about a year and a half ago due to faulty wiring) so are there any tips to help prevent overheating?

Again, thank you all for the amazing advice. Looking at Sarah's previous setup and then looking at everything thats been suggested breaks my heart. I wish I had known sooner that she was being treated this way... But my friend had made it clear that she was "basically an expert" and "knows what to do." Let me roll my eyes a bit harder. As soon as I had seen her bearded dragon laying in sand, I knew she didn't know anything about these poor animals. It takes a few minutes to do some decent research on an animal. Its been just a day since I've reached out to all of you, and look at all this information! You would think in the 3 or so years that my friend had Sarah, she could've taken the time just to do a basic google search...
Some people really should never have animals.

Anyways, sorry for the tangent. Please let me know what you guys think of the products I'm considering! Thank you so much!

It says 124 but I think that's talking about their 300w because my Vipar 300 draws actual like 130 or something according to the manual.

So if the 600 draws 240-260, that's not bad for the price. $137. And the roleadro has the white/yellow light so it would compliment one of the disco ball lights well.

I just can't find for sure what the actual on it is.

u/ismann · 1 pointr/SpaceBuckets

You can grow OG, just don't expect massive yields.

CFLs are for the spacebuckets. I wouldn't use them for tents as they're just not powerful enough. For a 2x2, you'll want a 600W light minimum regardless of how many plants in the tent. This is the light I use in my 2x2: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IVQ96MW

If you use CFLs, you'll want two colors, 6500K and 2700K. I use 4x 6500K and 2x 2700K for veg, and then 6x 2700K for flower if using a spacebucket.

If you want white light, google "high cri led par"

cri - color rating index. Basically, how well does a LED replicate the color of an incandescent bulb. I look for over 90cri

par - describes the lamp shape. Directs all the light forward in a wide cone, great for overhead lighting on a tank because a single lamp's light will spread out to cover the whole tank, and the bright lens of the bulb is pointed away from your eyes. For choosing your wattage, you'd probably want something in the 10-15W range.

Also, choose one that is 3000K. This replicates the warm amber color of an incandescent bulb. The higher the K, the more blue the light. Plants need mostly red light, and a bit of blue. It's also easier on the eyes, and I know how much time we all spend staring into our tanks.

I have one of these. You can put it in any standard E26 socket (that's the usual light bulb socket). The bulb looks kinda neat and the light color is slightly pink instead of shocking magenta so it's not obnoxious. Also, it provides enough light to actually grow some things. I currently have tomato starts under it and they're doing fine.

I look at Amazon listings and really just have no idea how to make heads or tails of whether things like this or other products are of reliable quality. Do you know of any resources where I can learn more about what to keep in mind when looking at lights?

I was using this light

I just purchased and hung up this 45 w light

I noticed after my plants spend the day in the sun when they come inside and rest some of the E's stand up and look stretched out the next few days. It may just be an effect/recovering from less direct sunlight. The Pearls always seems to be more stretched out than before. I'm starting to wonder if stretching is a sign of stress in some plants and not just a sign of not enough sunlight.

If I started it indoors after I transfer it outside would it grow again? I’ve heard of people growing them indoors, taking them out in spring/summer and bring them in during fall/winter

Would this work for the beginning?

u/ihaveaquestion2013 · 1 pointr/succulents

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post such a basic question, so I'll ask here.

What kind of grow lights should I get? I'm about to purchase a 5-tier shelf to hold all of my succulents for winter, but I'm new to this and have never used grow lights before. Browsing through this sub I've found these two are mentioned a lot? Here's one and here's another. Which one should I get? Should I put all the lights up top and let them shine down or should I put one on each shelf?

u/slothurknee · 1 pointr/succulents

How high above my seedlings should LED lights be? All the guidance I see online is for lighting that is massively more powerful than these. I have these grow lights which are about 20W worth of light per level.

Here are some of the plants and setup: https://imgur.com/a/YZKuB

Is it worth moving the lights even closer? What about getting more light (20W seems like a small amount to me).

u/WolverineDDS · 1 pointr/gardening

Also when you say more light how can I tell if my lights aren't bright enough? I turn them on when I get up and turn them off when I go to bed but when I first started them I was only doing about 10-12 hours a day.

I bought these cheap lights on Amazon so maybe they just aren't bright enough.

Hi I am by NO means super knowledgeable about these but since nobody else has given it a shot here we are, haha.

I don't think the wattage of that light is high enough to support plant growth. The spectrum/temperature/K is sufficient, but you need more powerful lights. If that makes sense.

I have used these in tandem with a south-facing window; they are not enough to support my plants without any help, but prevented etiolation in most of my plants: some had to be moved extremely close to grow normally so... (plus I found the purple unpleasant)

I invested recently in this light, which is pricier, but has been supporting the plants on its own -- no window. It's also white which is a lot more pleasant to look at IMO. Note the specs on these and see if you can find something that works for you! Best wishes

A $210 pH meter strikes me as an extravagance for this level of grow. You can use pH strips or better off, use a small standard soil pH tester.

The 4 inch carbon filter will work, but it's going to need an inline fan and some ducting hose.

Personally, I'd just get a small grow tent that fits the dimensions of your closet, and scrap the mylar and poly film. Then you can duct the fan and filter directly into your tent.

The tent only needs to be about 3 or 4 feet tall. You can place it on a table or stand if you want. Then you can sit in a chair when you tend your plants.

Some sort of adjustable rope system to hang the lamps.

I've grown more than a dozen crops indoors, and I've never worried about adding CO2 to the grow space. I'm aware of the benefits, but this might be more of an advanced consideration. If you're looking to economize, this would be one thing I think you could definitely cut for at least the first few grows.

One thing that could benefit you might be Marijuana Horticulture by Jorge Cervantes. He's been updating and revising this book for 35 years. So it's pretty comprehensive, and it can take you from first grow all the way up to how to grow top shelf bud. It will tell you exactly what soil and nutrients you need, which can save you a lot of money versus overpriced fancy boutique nutrients and designer potting soils. And it can help you troubleshoot the inevitable problems when they occur.

>How deep down do you let it get dry? How are you determining that it's dry? Eyeballing the top, or sticking your finger into it?

I have a combination PH and wetness tester. I usually eyeball it, but I check the moisture with that if I'm not sure.

>Is there a hole in the bottom of the planter?

Yes

>Your soil can't possibly be pH of 1-2. What acidic thing have you been adding that would have dropped the pH that low? Test the tester on ordinary tap water. It should be 7.

I will try this - thanks.

>Stop adding lime, it's for agriculture outdoors, where the vastly larger volume of soil, plus processes of soil chemistry and weather, work to ameliorate and regulate its effects. It's not for planters, where it can quickly and catastrophically raise your pH to Stephen King Dead Zone levels. Is that the white stuff sprinkled on top? Did the pepper that's wilted start wilting after you sprinkled lime all over the soil?

Yes - the white stuff is the lime. I mixed it with water and poured it over both plants twice over a month or two. Like I said in the original post, one of the plants exploded and started doing fantastically when I added the lime, but the other one started looking like this. They're in the exact same planter, so I'm confused why it hurt one and helped the other. I'll cut out the lime though. Any recommendations on how to help the droopy plant at this point?

I asked a similar question the other day (sorry), but I don't feel like I have a good grasp on which light I should get... I've looked through the overwinter thread and tried to do even more research but I'm still feeling unsure.

Plan to get succulents for indoor. They won't get much light from the window that is nearby. Don't know what kind of succulents I'll be getting yet specifically, but hoping for pink. Out of these three LEDs, which would be best? They seem a bit similar to me but since I'm new and feeling overwhelmed with lighting, I would like some extra opinions.

If you really can't put it outside, I'd place it in the sunniest part of the room and install something like this above it https://www.amazon.com/SANSI-Daylight-Spectrum-Ceramic-Vegetative/dp/B07BRKG7X1

u/King_of_Anything · 1 pointr/Citrus

It depends on quite a few factors, though the two most important ones are probably the indoor location and whether you want your plant to continue fruiting during winter.

Because I house my lemon tree in a living room, I personally like full-spectrum LEDs that mimic sunlight best (i.e. none of that blurple BS which is very hard on the eyes). My current setup uses a 36W Sansi Full Spectrum LED (which is equivalent to a 200W incandescent).

If your plant is right beside a south/southwest-facing window (almost touching the glass), you can probably get away with a lower-energy bulb (but I don't have personal experience with this). The same holds true if you don't mind the plant going dormant and not fruiting or flowering during the winter months. This lady in Toronto is using a 30W LED for her citrus to keep her citrus alive with no other major light sources, as an example.

u/ultrahello · 1 pointr/SavageGarden

I have a nice Sansi 36W link. My current setup uses 6 13W daylight Jungle Dawn LED. They are about a foot from my phalaenopsis orchids and pings. They are about 15” from a massive nepenthen that’s loving them. 36W should be totally fine or even on the low side.

It was more than I was planning to spend, but I really wanted something with decent heat dissipation and blended LEDs. Then it was too good. That poor bonsai really suffered! I do like the Sansi bulbs though, the 40W is like the desert and the 15w makes it look like the bonsai is in its own pool of sunlight. :)

What plants are you growing? What are their light needs?

I use grow bulbs like this:
grow bulb on amazon

For my tropical flowering plants, like hibiscus and also for palms. Not all tropicals need high light however, some burn very easily because they are found under the canopy- like some ferns.

I run the grow lights between 10-16 hours a day, depending on the season and how the plant reacts.

u/SexyRodentMom5 · 1 pointr/gardening

The distance from my light to my plants is about 16.5” Can you tell me if this is a good lightbulb to use?

u/Astrali3 · 1 pointr/succulents

You absolutely can use fluorescents! As you only have one at the moment i am assuming you mean a round-ish bulb type lamp, not a fluorescent fixture/tube type. There are both specialty bulbs, like this(Note that just because it is sold as a grow light, does not mean it is actually good at what it does - just like some celeb a while back sold game consoles that no one bought, because they were trash. Also this bulb is LED, not fluorescent), and normal fluorescent bulbs sold in stores like Lowes. Not all bulbs are created equal; but a bulb from Lowe's is often sufficient.

If you plan to upgrade to many plants, you may wish to switch to tube-type bulbs, in which case you will need to take into account the output of the light. 6500K(Kelvin) is the color temperature generally suggested for succulents.

Feel free to reply if you would like more information or if you would like someone other then me to respond. Also, cannabis growers have a forum where they test light bulbs for their effective light output - they've been doing it for years! This might be informative for you.

Edit: Also, i would like to state that i am not dissing the bulb i linked. I have never used or purchased that item and cannot give a review on it.. Its just an example.

You might want to ask more about lighting from r/mosses since they're better equipped to discuss moss needs than I am. I know that my moss has been fine with this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07LG39B3M?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title) placed about 10 inches from the moss and turned on for 10 hours a day. But, I have no clue if that's optimal, I just know it works for me.

This is the exact light that I got here:

It had a lot of good reviews, and it seemed pretty close to sunlight. So far I think my herbs are doing quite well (my cilantro and dill have really taken off) but I would absolutely love trying to grow fruiting plants like tomatoes or peppers inside if it's at all possible. I live in an apartment in Minnesota with no balcony, so I'd really love to find a good alternative to a yard! :)

I'd love to have a link to your YouTube channel, if you wouldn't mind sending it to me.

Check out EveryThang on YouTube, he has videos on the lights he uses and how echeveria color works.

Grow lights have been a chore to shop for, there are so many variations and the made in china stuff has a wide mix of reviews. The purple ones hurt my eyes (if you have thick or cheap glasses they will be extra bad- double vision), so shopping for white... I’m leaning towards a Sunblaster LED, if I can find one.
They also depend on your setup- can you hang a 4’ tube above your plants? An 18” tube? A single bulb? A clip light? A monster unit with cooling fans built in?
I have a Kingbo 50W led dual-head that stopped etoliation on an echeveria elegans (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07LG39B3M?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title) but I’m not sure it’s enough to maintain color. Mine is on for 14 hours in a sunny window and my black prince is only green-blackish, so probably not.
Time of the light depends on how strong and how far away it is.

Should I get a lamp for my ginseng tree?

Hi all. I was gifted a ginseng bonsai tree. Problem is, I get no direct sunlight in my home, and I have no outdoor space to put it. Should I get a lamp for it? If so, what type of lamp should I get? This is the top result on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Light-Lights-Indoor-Plants-Spectrum/dp/B07PYFTHMW/

No idea: it’s one of numerous cheap Chinese variations on amazon...this one

I have it on 12 hours a day at full power, both red and blue light, and with the lamp placed as close as possible to the plant, to the point where the leaf tips touch the bulb.

Do you have a recommendation? I found this on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Light-Lights-Indoor-Plants-Spectrum/dp/B07PYFTHMW

u/Ladybac0n · 1 pointr/plants

You probably won’t know till you buy it. I would try and group your plants under it. If you notice your plants might need more light (leaf drop) then pick up a second one.
This is the one I use, I have two of them set up in two bunches of plants, they work great.

Any advice? It’s my first winter with succulents. Normally they are in my kitchen window however that window is pretty drafty and it’s getting cold at night now

u/spentuh · 1 pointr/Bonsai

Just updated the flair, thank you for the heads up can't believe i missed that.

Here's some photos of the Ficus and my setup. (the window is always open and north facing, just closed for the photos)

I'm looking for some grow lights for a variety of succulents that have recently sprouted from seeds (mostly Echeveria with some Pachyphytum and some Sedum varieties). I live in an apartment with decent lighting and east facing windows, and currently am supplementing light for 10-12 hours a day with a cheap Amazon LED (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PYFTHMW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1).

However, I know as I get into the winter that I would like the option to use blackout curtains to maintain the heat in my apartment and would like some recommendations for primary grow lights. Currently, I'm using the pedestal arrangement because the plants are not in any sort of shelving, but rather on one large counter.

I am willing to get shelving, but would rather not mount anything into the ceilings as I live in a rental currently. I live in the 6b hardiness zone and will be using a bottom heating pad in the colder months as I'm not sure how warm I'll be keeping my apartment.

Any help would be appreciated :D

600w hps with a fan and filter. you're going to want a fan and filter regardless of the lights you use, and the 600 hps will beat those two panels at a fraction of the cost. just duct the exhausted air out of a window and you won't be running much hotter than the leds.
if you're dead-set on led, look into cobs or go with a couple cheaper panels imo. maybe a couple of these. the ones you linked are really expensive and aren't going to be enough light for that 4x4 tent.

She sick, not sure what she needs.
Also, I don't have $ to buy shit to fix it so she probably going to die :'(
She was doing well up to the last two watering, the first one I saw a little discoloration and then I didn't gave her any nutrients and molasses and just PH'd water at 6.5 but she became worst... the discoloration worsened ..

If I buy those two or three products will she survive ?
Cal-mag but from another brand and some blooming nutrient ?

The purple led grow lights are actually a mixture of the spectrums. You can do it with cfls but its very hard, a lot of energy, and heat. Ive used anything from cfl, to 150w hps, to a 300w ufo led setup. The led setup was the best and yes it was purple.

Whats the spectrum of those bulbs and what phase of growing is it?

This is 50$
