Or you can just get one of these for $30.

Why make it complicated with a phone plan?

u/Baelzebubba · 29 pointsr/conspiracy

You can by the proper device rather than a burner phone.

$120 Canadian!

30 day battery life better than a burner.

Put some hardcore drugs or a throwaway device loaded with child pornography in a box that looks like it's shipped [with no names or even an address] to the apartment and put it in your mailbox with a small GPS tracker disguised.

Buy the GPS tracker with an untraceable Paypal account or a prepaid Debit card. Have it shipped to an Amazon Locker, pick it up at night and wear a baseball cap. Delete your fake Amazon account afterwards.

Be sure to handle everything with gloves and wipe away prints (use mittens at the Amazon Locker, it's cold anyway in the Valley).

Use a burner phone that you've paid for with cash to have the GPS device send you the SMS of their location at go time. When the package gets stolen ping it for their location and anonymously report a narcotic or illegal contraband case to the police with their address.

Take out the battery from the burner phone and throw it away. For good measure break it in half if it's a flip phone.

Sit back and enjoy peace of mind for you and the other helpless victims for which the LAPD / USPS wouldn't have otherwise intervened.

If she's alone during the day, that's no longer safe for her. If someone is there but she is sneaking out there are a couple of steps you can take. The black mat the /u/Malachite6 mentions is a quick and easy one. You can also install a lock either up high, or down low where it's out of her line of sight but others can easily reach. If she's alone, locking her in is a bad idea in case of an emergency. You can put an alarm on her door. You can also put a tracker on her in case she gets lost.

Truly though, wandering off is usually the point where a secure living situation needs to be taken seriously.

I'll get right to the goods: here's one of my GPS-logged jumps. I recorded it with this bluetooth GPS while paired with the open-source BASELine App for Android and iOS, which you can try out for free without the GPS.

u/dbplatypii · 6 pointsr/SkyDiving

Cheaper solution with the same functionality:

  1. Buy a bluetooth gps receiver for $140 (less than the cost of a flysight)

  2. Install BASEline Flight Computer app for free and connect it to the bluetooth GPS
u/GundoSkimmer · 6 pointsr/bicycling
  1. Judgement. location and timing etc

  2. A U lock and cable combination. U lock goes through frame and rear wheel, and cable goes from the U lock to the front wheel

  3. insurance. pretty rare but when you get into the 4 figure range for bikes it starts to make a lotta sense

  4. GPS trackers are also pretty rare but I've always been interested in them, I just havent had a bike valuable enough to justify one :( lol

I use the H2O Pay as you go prepaid cellular plan which you can get away with paying $10 every 4 months ($40 a year). You call the tracker and it texts you back its location with a Google maps link. It costs $0.05 every time it texts you and that's deducted from the $10 credit.

u/dangerous340 · 4 pointsr/motorcycles

I bought this for around $20 and a free sim from T-mobile that allows 30 texts per month for $3. Mapping is over my head but the GPS location has been spot on when testing.

u/tyzbit · 4 pointsr/motorcycles

I have a Trak-4 and it works well. It gets a signal inside my garage and seems pretty reliable, plus the battery lasts 2-3 months before you have to charge it up. I mounted it inside my side case.

First of, excellent choice of RV and truck.

I love my Andersen Magnetic Jack Blocks. You have the 6 point auto-leveling system from Lippert (Ground Control 3.0 I reckon) so you just attach these jack blocks to the round feet magnetically so you never have to 'center' the blocks when leveling.

LevelMate Pro is another item I have that I love. You can check if your level, side to side before even detaching. It's a must have as I shave a good 5-10 mins each time I setup and I'm always 100% perfectly level.

Purchase a Kingpin Lock for when your RV isn't hooked up to the truck so no one can steal it.

Purchase a regular lock to replace the lock pin on your 5th wheel hitch to prevent people from unhooking your RV when you're stopped. Yes, it's happened.

Consider getting the Furrion observation camera. Your RV is already pre-wired for it so it's crazy easy to install.

Which surge protector did you get? Progressive Industries makes really good units and they're quite popular.

Enjoy!

u/fennyrules · 3 pointsr/randonneuring

As well as the Spot ones mentioned, there is the Garmin (formerly Delorme) inReach series as well. They have more features but are more expensive and again require a subscription.

edit: If all you want is an emergency locator then something like this is a single use system that will alert the emergency services and doesn't need a subscription, but that is all it will do.

u/AmericaWet · 3 pointsr/IllegalLifeProTips

You’re right, my apologies. Let’s take a look at the second result.

My point is, there’s no reason to reinvent the wheel. These devices already exist, and already work. I didn’t read the reviews on the first result, but an amazon search for gps tracker gives over 7000 results. doing the research to find a good tracker would almost certainly take insignificant fractions of the time it would take to learn how to build one.

u/zacmarcus · 3 pointsr/Entrepreneur

Phones only use one GPS frequency which is only accurate to about 4m, so getting different apps on your phone won't help.

You could look into getting a dual frequency GPS device, but it looks like the dual frequency GPS chip for phones was only just created, so might have to wait a bit. The new chips should be accurate to about 30 cm.

I did a quick search, but couldn't find standalone device for navigation or something that plugs into your phone. Let me know if you find something usable.

EDIT: I just found one that should be able to connect to your phone via bluetooth. Let me know it goes.

u/C-creepy-o · 3 pointsr/Cartalk

You could get something like this: https://www.amazon.com/KingNeed-Smallest-Waterproof-Installation-Motorcycle/dp/B013DU2KTW/ref=sr_1_sc_5?s=gps&ie=UTF8&qid=1495555144&sr=1-5-spell&keywords=vehcile+gps+tracker

Park van in same place if it gets stolen you can track it. You could also doa number of other thing to prevent it from being stolen.

Hidden kill switch: http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/how-to/a9212/thwart-car-thieves-with-a-hidden-kill-switch-15699546/

You could also purchase a number of other items: https://www.google.com/search?q=car+theft+prevention+devices&oq=car+theft+preven&aqs=chrome.2.0j69i57j0l4.3126j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

You can basically purchase a boot for the vehicle and boot it yourself every time. As the article also mentioned, you can just take the fuel pump relay with you every time you leave the van.

I don't think you need to find a special spot to prevent theft you just need to up your prevention game.

I should note my incomplete list of desirable mods is influenced in part by carb-y Ducs, which had their own unique temperament not found in newer ones. Some of these mods may not make sense as desirable to those who do not have an understanding of 90s carb-y Ducs:

Voltage meter, A/F gauge, programmable ignition, adjustable camshaft pulleys, porting (V2/W2 heads were notorious for having been suffocated from the manufacturer), bar-end weights, bar-end turn signals, GPS tracker, lever guards

I become irritable when I observe cheesy and/or misplaced stickers, especially when they are not angled correctly in relation to body lines. It just grinds my gears for some reason...

TKSTAR Mini Waterproof Tracking Device with Powerful Magnet Long Standby GPS Tracker Locator for Kids Seniors Pets Cars PS110 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KX9HFWI?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

This is what I use. Recommended by someone else here. Cheap and cheerful. Tracking is generally good. Gets a bit confused sometimes but I reckon I'd have no issues in case I needed to use it in anger.

Vibration alarm is pretty damn sensitive. Where I used to park on the street it got set off by passing lorries a few times.

Put £20 on a PAYG sim in October and haven't topped it up yet.

u/_M1nistry · 3 pointsr/motorcycles

Random one on amazon just one that has a decent-ish amount of reviews. There's tons of trackers ranging in huge price ranges, so just read reviews to find a decent one.

u/2kul4u · 3 pointsr/cars

I got a GPS tracker online on Amazon for $30 and I had it installed at a local stereo shop for $80 bucks. I use an H2O wireless sim car that costs $10 every 90 days. This option is a lot cheaper than LoJack and I've had it installed in both of my cars for over a year without any problems. It is controlled through text messages, and you can use it as a remote kill switch. I usually kill it every night, so even with the keys it won't start. It also comes with a small discrete panic button that sends an alert to anyone you select. Another cool feature is that it allows you to remotely listen in to a microphone that you connect to the tracker, included in the package. Overall I am highly satisfied with the quality, price and robust features of the system. It is neatly tucked in the steering column so that it is not visible.

Another big purchase I’m thinking about making is a GPS tracker: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N6H70C9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_5Zt4DbP9BVKCC

Chains and U-Locks may deter some thieves, but I never want to lose my bike. And even if it is stolen, I want to be able to reclaim it.

Edit: This one is magnetic and I think there is enough room to mount it in between the seat and the battery enclosure.

u/thesqrtofminusone · 2 pointsr/GoRVing

Yep! It worked flawlessly over the weekend: LevelMatePro

Used in tandem with these leveling blocks (I think the most common supplier is Anderson) meant I could watch the trailer become level as the wheels rolled over the blocks.

I also got to try my TPMS setup to all 8 wheels, tow vehicle and trailer. Nice peace of mind knowing temp and pressure (my truck has it but I wanted to see data all from the same system).

u/Bro_Sauce_69 · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

these. The downside is that someone bumps into your bike when you are not around, people are going to be pissed that the alarm is going off until you get back....

I also throw a chain through my front wheel and up around the forks.

Insurance is your friend! Make sure and record any and all serial numbers for parts, the VIN, and license plate of course.

If you want to get really hardcore, you can get a GPS tracker. That one is a super cheap crappy model, you would probably want to shop around and get a more expensive one. But if you are worried about these cokehead morons (from comments below) stealing your bike just because it's yours, that would be the way to go. That way you can maybe get them put in jail for awhile as well.

Personally my bike looks like a POS anyway (it sort of is, but just cosmetically, I keep my baby running smooooooth), so I'm not really worried about anyone stealing it because it wouldn't be worth the effort, heh.

u/vapeducator · 2 pointsr/scooters

I have some of these thick steel cable locks. You can hook them together as long as you wish, but 2 will usually work fine for a scooter. Maybe there's something similar in the BENELUX area.

I have purchased motorcycle alarms with 2-way remote like this one. The alarm notifies you on the pager with the sensor that was triggered.

I've also purchased GPS trackers like this one. It uses a GSM sim card to notify you by text message if the tracker has left an area that you define. It can also text you if it travels faster than a defined speed. It doesn't only rely on GPS for tracking. It also uses GSM/GRPS to triangulate a position and give you an actual street address. You can call or text the device to engage constant tracking with updates every few seconds or minutes.

One of my scooters has a remote start with engine kill.

There are also alarms like this one that have a proximity sensor that triggers an audible warning if anyone approaches the scooter, besides sending notification to the remote control pager. I haven't purchased this one.

u/VillainousYeti · 2 pointsr/SilkRoad

This may sound drastic but, if you really want to see if your mail is compromised mail yourself atracker and package it like how any of the things you purchased would be packaged. If its intercepted you will know.

u/mittermayr · 2 pointsr/MotoUK

Yes, that's the one I always recommend, too. Here's the UK page.

Set up can be tricky, but if you have problems reach out and I'll gladly help. Just make sure you use a 2G Sim Card, not a 3G one (from Three UK, doesn't work).

Google emergency alert trackers for seniors. You'll find trackers that allow your dad to call an emergency service company with the push of a button and some have fall detection. As well.

Another option is a watch. I got my dad the apple series 4 watch. It's the only one that I know of that has fall detection though rumor is more are coming soon. Can monitor sleep patterns too. He does seem to wear it but it's going to take a lot of practice to get him to wear it while showering like I want him to.

The problem with both of these is that the devices need to be charged so your dad would have to remember to charge them. Also both require a service charge or phone service charge.

I found this too but I'm not sure if the business is good so they won't go belly up or not. Plus it's service charge is quite expensive too. The benefit of this is that you can get a power charger attachment that let's it run for 2 weeks without having to charge battery. So maybe you can be the one that charges the batteries instead of your dad.

Pros: Very simple to install and use, just shove a SIM card in and ring it, it sends you a text with a google maps link with very precise location (and speed). It’s also insanely cheap compared to the competition!

Cons: Easy for a thief to locate and remove (you have to be sneaky and hide it), has a tendency to drain your battery so I would only get it if you’re a daily or near-daily rider.

The specific one I mentioned in my post cannot. This one is more expensive, but has the ability to connect 5 devices.

Another vote for external. Battery life on my SkyPro XGPS160 is 8+ hours. By having it as an external device, battery life on the tablet is much better. I've got a bunch of tablets (I'm a code monkey) so I have GPS functionality without paying for data capabilities on each of them - only takes one extra tablet for this to break even.

It works with all the major android and IOS flight tools. I use the gps in conjunction with a stratux on just about every flight.

This can be done quite cheaply. Start with this $25 tracker: http://www.amazon.com/Real-Time-Portable-Mini-Tracker/dp/B001FYQO3W

Then get a $10 Go Phone from AT&T just to initialize their SIM card, and select the plan where you pay $2 for unlimited SMS only on the days that you use it.

$35 to get started, $2/day for use, and it sends you a Google Maps link on demand. ☺

u/jashkenas · 2 pointsr/klr650

I'm using this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01KJS55JS/

In combination with a 2G "Ting” Sim card that costs $6 a month for the phone number. Easy to hide.

I could never get the feature working there it proactively pings its location to a server of your choosing every minute. The ultimate dream would be to set up an app on your phone where your phone starts screaming if the bike is ever in motion with your phone more than 50 feet away from it.

But you can still text it, and it'll reply with the exact location.

u/Sirico · 1 pointr/motorcycles

this is the one I have uk one also I lied it's £15 still prob more effective than a chain costing the same. Just stick a pre pay sim in it most use giffgaff in the UK as you can add what you like.

u/gerbology · 1 pointr/motorcycles

I setup this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KNR2YZ4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) on my adventure bike and love it. You can get a prepaid sim card for $10 that'll last up to 3 months or 200 texts through https://www.amazon.com/H2O-Wireless-SIM-Card-Kit/dp/B004MF3IA8 (Not sure if this sim card works in Australia, but I'm sure you can find something similar). I love the alarm system, I used a high pitched siren for the alarm (had to get separately) and it's quite ear piercing. It has a bunch of different settings for quiet mode vs sirens and has a motion alarm as well. I wish it had more sensitivity settings through, as on high it goes off at the slightest touch (and sometimes the wind), and on medium I couldn't make it go off when shaking the bike back and forth, so I leave it on high. I haven't used the ignition cutoff feature, but it does come with a relay so you can remotely kill the ignition from a sms message. It does drain my battery after about 4-5 days though, so I leave a trickle charger on my bike. I think the cell and GPS antennae are supposed to have line of sight to the sky though, and I have mine zip tied to my grab bars, which are visible. They might work underneath plastics though, I haven't tried.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001FYQO3W/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_8?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1AX3OB6FJWQVB#productDetails

It uses the cell phone network to communicate it's location via SMS and requires a sim card and a cell phone plan.

The nice thing about the SPOT tracker is that it relies on satellites instead of the cell network and will work in areas where there is no cell coverage.

It's peace of mind I guess and works surprisingly well. I did a bit of a review here http://vandogtraveller.com/cheap-gps-tracker/

So I've been looking into this and the cheapest option I've found is BASEline. It's open source, free to use, and you can upgrade your phone's GPS with a $130 gadget if you feel your phone's GPS doesn't cut it.

I'm going to try jumping without the fancy GPS and see how my phone and the app does in the air by itself.

> Why do you want a bike computer which would act as an external GPS to your phone? To save phone battery?

What I need is an external GPS. What I'd like would be a nice handlebar mounted display of my current speed. Its a nice bonus.

> But, honestly, your phone's screen probably draws more power than your phone's GPS chip

Thats actually not the drain - the drain comes from two things, the constant attempts to lock onto more satellites, and the main processor doing the hard work associating that data live. I was able to do some brief playing around with an external gps, and I was looking at 30% more out of a single charge minimum.

Edit: And I already have an external battery. Keep in mind that charging while working the processor like that causes some major heat - and I like to avoid that. If I can use the lower, 1A charge setting on my external battery instead of going to 2A just to keep the battery level reasonable, all the better.

There are small GPS trackers which require a SIM card for uploading data. They cost around 50 bucks.

Supplying them with power is a bit problematic though. The small ones require charging every 2 weeks and those which last 180 days are rather bulky.

This one looks kinda convenient for ebikes because any input voltage from 12 to 60 will do:

You need a sim card so the GPS can update you realtime with the location, and you can issue it commands too; if you set it up you could remote kill the fuel pump relay. https://www.usmobile.com/blog/sim-gps/

You'll need to install a gps tracker of your choice. I would not recommend an ODB plug, thieves can easily remove these. You will want to install and hide a GSM gps tracker somewhere. You will also likely want to install and wire the GPS up to its own battery source, as it will drain your starting battery over time. If you get a rechargeable tracker, you likely will get out of the habit of charging / using it. If you beef up your battery with a second in parallel or drive it every 1-3 days, or have solar; you don't need isolated power. If you do install a smaller battery for the GPS, do think about using a diode to allow power from your alternator to charge the second battery, but to keep it from discharging your starting battery.

Or if your not so much a DIY kinda person; buy an asset tracker and pay a monthly fee.

Check your laws. This could be illegal. If your name is also on the car, you should be good to go. You can track your own property as you like. But this will be cheaper than a PI, and will tell you if there's a reason to hire one.

Leveling can be a pain and was the only thing that made me cringe when we took off for a RV weekend. I can’t stand an unlevel RV.
Here is what I did and now love leveling.

This will get you within a 1/2 inch of level but most of the time dead on

  1. Use these (each block is 1 inch of height increase.)

  2. Buy and install this install will require you to get your RV level, but take the time and get it dead on. I used a counter, the floor and the inside of the fridge to get my measurements which all seemed to be extremely close. None the less, take your time and get it level then install the Level Mate Pro the instructions walk your perfectly through the process. Leveling took the longest but I completed install in about an hour.

Once installed you are ready to go, now level your RV in less that 10 minutes!

    Edit:

My point is the old fashion way is great but with the level pro it tells you how far out of level you are, thereby you know how many blocks to use THE FIRST TIME (each block is one inch). When you pull in to your site, the Level Pro will tell you exactly which side and how far (in inches) you are out of level. Pull forward a few inches, drop down your blocks where you need them Level pro told you which side and how many, 2 inches out passenger? Then stack two blocks passenger side and roll up on them. Then crank your tongue until the level pro says you are level front to back - done!

But hey to each their own, just gave my input on what I find to work exceptionally well :-)

I'd all you really want is GPS, I'd get a GPS tracker that Issa stand alone. Then you just text or can it and it sends you the coordinates.

Do you mean route planning or route tracking? Google maps is good enough for planning but if you want to see where your delivery drivers go then using Traccar with some cheap vehicle GPS trackers would be a good solution.

The internal GPS's work OK at best.

One thing to watch for is to be sure there are antenna wires running over the top of the gps chip as that is where the antenna is located.

I found that by using the external GPS chip as found on Amazon:

You will get <3m accuracy most of the time
