These carbon filters are used mostly in commercial spaces. In the United States they are commonly found in marijuana grow houses to move air outside. A carbon filter removes a high percentage of odors to reduce the risk of detection.
I like them in my home because I'm not a fan of buying other scented products that "mask" smells. When I walk into my home and my carbon filter is on it smells clean. I'm not sure if that clean smell is due to something from the carbon? Either way it's a clean, crisp smell that many people comment on and cannot be replicated by chemicals.
Cons: inline fans are loud and the system is a little bulky. Noise can be reduced by adding ducting to the end or buying insulated fans as referenced below.

Not really. The sidelights are a nice and cheap upgrade, but probably affects more trichome production than yield.

Its really hard to recommend those small fans for filters, my advice would be to get an inline fan and filter and not overcomplicate things. ONA gel is also a good solution for odors.

Try to get them for free. I've never paid for a 5gal bucket. At least in my city there are a lot of 5gal buckets near construction sites, to give one example. You just have to know where to look.

Check the bucket plant guide for tips from the community. The best kind of experience will be your first hand experience. You should expect to kill some plants before mastering the proccess. In a Space Bucket, the main challenge is keeping the plant as short as possible. If you keep it low the lighting will be more effective, and the flowers more awesome.

What you're smelling is the terpenes, the volatile aromatic compounds present in cannabis. They provide the taste, aroma, and synergistic effects present in cannabis. You could, if you were so inclined, put your flower in a vacuum chamber and pull all those terps off. It would smell like grass, taste like ass, and not be as pleasant effect-wise, but it would get rid of the smell. Try a dry-herb vape. There's still smell, but it's a lot less. Yep! I use this one. I considered the one you linked, but got the metal one simply because it was cheaper at the time. Both would get the job done.
I have it connected to my k40 via 4" dryer hose and this flange hose fitting which fits perfectly in the slot on the back of the k40.
Used these clamps to secure the dryer tubing together.
As far as how well it works, I'm pretty satisfied. I have the exhaust blowing out a 4" fitting attached to a board I close in my window. I smell a little bit of burnt wood when cutting, but it's very minute. Almost all smoke goes out the window. The suction is very good, if I'm cutting card stock it occasionally sucks the small paper pieces right off the cutting bed. When I'm doing laser alignments, it almost completely eliminates the smell of burning masking tape during test firing even with the door open.

Pretty much stopped growing vertical (an inch or 2 since last update) but filling out nicely.
Some yellow showing on tips, but not too concerned at this point as she looks to be doing fine. I noticed roots at the top of the soil and had about an inch of room for more substrate, so topped it up.
She is drinking a lot now, almost daily feedings of about 3 liters.

In my experience, those in-line vent fans don't have the design to effectively push or pull through filters and containers. They're also called booster fans because they are meant to maintain airflow in the weak areas of air systems, but with laminar incoming flow and little restriction to input and output.
I'd recommend something like this. Should work for a few LED 5 gallon buckets imo.
4 inch blower
If you're talking about several large tote or trash buckets, I would step up to 6 inch blowers of the same design. You can see from the impeller design in some pictures that they are intended for blowing through filters and pulling through restrictive airspaces.

Congrats on finding the seeds and getting this far. If you are a first time grower, then I would highly recommend a controlled environment starting with a tent. I have done it both ways, and outdoor seasonally, and you will benefit a lot from having a confined space you can control as you learn. Contrary to popular belief, it isnt "just a weed that grows". To have a quality finished product you need a good amount of time and energy spent on the plants. However, because the growth takes time, as a first time grower, you can purchase the items you need as you need them to build out your grow. I have purchased a lot of my items on amazon, so I will provide some links to items I vouch for personally.

I have both of these products and can finish 4 plants in a tent nicely in about 100 days. I know people have feelings about using off brand lights but I have had zero issues, ever. On thing to do though is to not let the plants grow too tall. Rather train them to grow like bushes by topping them early and continuing to top the new nodes at a reasonable height, Id suggest 30 inches max (from top of the pot).

For veg, you will be able to get by a few weeks or maybe a month without a tent, but the light will become annoying.
For soil. I highly recommend mixing fox farms happy frog and ocean forest. This will prevent you needing to use fertilizers really at all until flower time. Yes it is kind of expensive, but it is worth it. I have tried the experiment of making soil myself... it becomes outrageously priced so fast and unless you are really good at chemistry/botany you can totally fuck some shit up. Trust the fox farms soil. It is the best IMO. Also, I am a huge fan of cloth bags. I suggest these:

Now even in veg, your plants are going to begin to smell. But by flower time you will have a real problem on your hands, even with a tent. So next you will need a carbon scrubber. I use this one off amazon for a tent and have zero complaints while the tent is closed. I also have the filter hanging in the tent and venting out the side into the attic of my rental. Zero smell, unless the tent is open (which you will want to do in the beginning, but over time you will learn to not go in everyday unless you need to). With this item, every other grow you need to replace just the carbon canister part of it. It is easy to do and worth every penny.

A garage is a good choice as long as it's not freezing in there when you're operating the printer. Most resins need to be between 30 to 40C to cure optimally. Some printers have heaters specifically to keep the resin nice and fluid. So, bear that in mind when you make your choice.
I honestly don't know how dangerous the fumes are, but you won't want to breathe it after you sniff it anyway. Most UV resin has a burned plastic-like smell. It is fairly acrid and no one recommends breathing it, of course. I personally find it pretty intolerable.
That said, the fumes are easy to control if you choose a sealed machine (one without any holes in the case) such as the Peopoly Moai. Sealed machines can sit with resin in the vat essentially forever without leaking any fumes, which means you don't need to have active ventilation on the machine while it's printing or just sitting idle. Machines that do have ventilation, such as the Anycubic Photon, will require either a well-ventilated room (again, a garage is ideal) or they'll need to be connected to a duct to a window while in operation. You can cover the vents on most of those machines when the machine isn't in use.
Most of the fumes that you'll be exposed to are during clean up when you remove parts from the build plate and wash them in isopropyl alcohol or methanol to remove the uncured resin. This is a messy, smelly, and slightly dangerous business that involves sharp blades and splashing. Some people like to wear a respirator for this. I don't use a respirator, but only because I have a fairly powerful ventilation system. I keep my SLA printer in a small 10'x10' repurposed bedroom which normally has terrible ventilation, so I operate a 6" inline duct HVAC fan with a duct to a window. That fan easily clears the air in the room in just a few minutes. And if I run the duct directly over my cleaning vats, I can't even smell the alcohol fumes. So if you're going to do your cleanup in a small area like that, then I highly recommend some kind of ducted ventilation system.
Your cleaning station can also be tailored to contain fumes. I highly suggest buying at least three cheap rectangular 1-gallon tupperware containers with tight lids (like these). Use one of them as a drip-tray while removing parts from the build plate, use a second for alcohol cleaning, and use a third for water rinse. The lids will keep the fumes contained, and it'll save your alcohol from evaporating. It's cheap and effective.
Just a side note, during cleanup, it's absolutely mandatory to wear eye protection and disposable gloves. Get used to idea of using a lot of gloves. I buy them in lots of 1000.

I see a lot of the ventilation mods for the Photon using the printed backplate for a 4" dryer hose.My wife cannot stand the smell of the resins, and is also very concerned about the long term health effects. So I'm building an enclosure as cheaply as I can.
I've sealed up an Ikea Lixhult ($40) and cut out a 4" hole to attach a hose. I'm probably going to buy the Vivosun Air Filtration Kit as the extractor.

It's a great greenhouse. I got really lucky it fit perfectly on my balcony. Only minor complaint is the wire shelving is a little flimsy. If you have heavy plants, it'll sag a little, but it holds my peppers fine.

I would have to say yeah, slightly, if you're not willing to do anything at all about it. How much effort you're willing to go through is up to you, but I'll throw out a few suggestions, from low effort to ludicrous:
-try from different places on your balcony, although it's difficult to predict wind against a building.
-smoke out of a different window
-smoke into your range hood or bathroom exhaust fan
-any of the above plus a fan to blow the smoke farther/better
-add a HEPA filter to the fan
-some kind of personal air filter like the smoke buddy
-hack together a tube with fan and activated charcoal (diy version of below)

You want a centrifugal fan, not a duct booster. 192cfm is the smallest sized fan you can buy that is centrifugal.

The issue with those duct booster fans is they do not create enough static pressure to pull through a carbon filter, or to create enough airflow in longer ducting lines or when there's bends in the ducting.
Get one of these units made for scrubbing the smell from weed growing. It'll clean that nasty air up with a quickness.

GROW DETAILS
I have three different strains, Northern Lights, Pre-99 big bud, and pure power plant, and then an unknown seed(which I planted about two weeks ago as the previous unknown seed turned out male, see previous post [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/microgrowery/comments/5qo1yo/early_sign_of_balls_details_in_comments/0. One in each 3-gallon smart pot. For the first two weeks of growing I had an 18/6 light schedule, and then switched to 12/12. (I'm essentially doing 12/12 from as early as the plant could respond to the change in light schedule). Over the past 15 days I watered twice with tiger bloom nutes.
I definitely made the mistake of not listening to your advice when I originally posted and am trying to grow 3 plants in a 1.5X2.5X3 foot tent...It is getting crowded, I should've listened and stuck with one, maybe two plants. Other than that I haven't had any problem that I have noticed other then a few spots of damage on leaves occasionally but no pests or wilting. I'm sure there are things I could've done better though. Thank you for all your help, I can't wait to get to harvest.
Personal experience here -- the iPower 4 inch filter / inline fan combo didn't work very well at all for me. My entire garage smelled like herb.

Grow Tent
A proper setup should be able to get rid of any smells, but that wouldn't be a sandwich-sized sponge and your usual 120mm computer case fan. In order for this to work you will need a radial fan and a proper filter like this set. Something smaller would certainly do, but I've never seen anything under 4" diameter.
They key is getting something that provides enough suction toward the exhaust so all the other openings and cracks in the photon's case don't leak any gas. This will in turn increase the volume of your whole setup. Sleeping next to it might be difficult. There's solutions for that, too, if you're willing to spend the time and money.
Depending on your fan, you may be able to adjust the fan speed to reduce noise -- either via a built-in controller or an external one. There are cheap motor controllers that reduce a fan speed by flipping the power on/off really quickly. Those can be hard on the fan motor and/or create loud buzzing at lower speeds. You can also get a variable voltage controllers that works by smoothly reducing the overall voltage. Those cost a little bit more, but work much better. Since they're serious industrial equipment, they also probably have better resale value.
About smell, you could run an extra carbon filter on a freestanding inline fan to scrub the air outside the tents. (Really cheap ones should be fine for that.) A HEPA air filter/ionizer or other things could help, too.
Keep in mind that you'll probably have the tent(s) open for a while during harvest, when everything is at its smelliest. I didn't cover vents during my first harvest, and the smell had all the subtlety of a flying saucer landing. (I'm in a legal state, but would still rather not annoy people with skunkiness!)

Given that there's no such thing as a BIFL filtration system of any kind, the DIY recommendations here are rather reasonable. I quite like the furnace filter + box fan suggestion.
If you want something a little more robust, look into getting a carbon filter and a fan to go with it. I think the usual recommendation for carbon filters is for 24/7 use they need replaced every year or two. along with a humidifier, humidity controller, a couple small fans, a few rolls of led strip lights and a timer. You can put together one of these automated setups for pretty damn cheap (less than $200?) and you will never have to mist and fan again, and will allow you to go out of town etc and not worry about the constant misting and fanning. Additionally you can grow some culinary mushrooms (lions mane and to a less extent king oyster does well with cubensis), which if youre interested in doing this long term or bulk really helps cover your ass.
As mentioned below you should transition to bulk after this grow. Look into making liquid culture from fruits you grow this round which can be used to quickly make grain spawn and thus bulk tek grows.

Normally I have 4 inch inline going during the day, but it currently turns off at night... I know I need to change it to always on. And a 6 inch circular that is always on and not facing them. The inline makes a good breeze where the intake is next to the bigger plant

The plastic cover is garbage, it dries out in the sun and starts tearing at the zippers. But It's just as easy just to use a clear tarp or drop cloth. The frame has a lot of uses.

since the shelves are adjustable (although it is kinda annoying so not something you do all the time) you could leave like 3ft on the bottom and grow like 2 plants there full time if you want. The led shoplights are mostly just for starting, that would be your middle shelves. usually like a month or so for seed to sprouts or rooting clones.
but there is no point growing tons of starter plants if you don't have room for them when they are bigger =]
mature plants can get large 3ft x 5ft easy. but you can trim them to fit whatever space you want. (see small /r/spacebuckets setups, to huge /r/outdoorgrowing plants)
an inline fan with flexible tubing and air filter (if you are flowering and dont want it to smell outside your shed much) is easy to place if you have some vent or opening somewhere in the shed.

Well, I wouldn't buy a tent kit/package. You could go with a 24"x24" tent like this one then buy your light and carbon filter/inline fan seperate.
iPower is a good inexpensive brand to start with for your fan/filter. A 4" fan is more than enough for that size.
As for your light a Quantum board leds are the most efficient lights out now but Cobs (chip on board) are great too.
Add a little clip fan for air circulation and you're all set!

I use this (they also make a smaller one) in the late spring and early fall to protect from rain but still take advantage of warm days. As we all know, cool temps and wetness is a bad combo. It is not durable enough to leave out year round.

A small 6 inch carbon filter with intake. I actually used this brand and many of their larger sizes. Intake should be 6" and cost appx. $40, worth it , electric is minimal clears the air of your whole apt (if under 600) you will actually notice cleaner air (I'm in LA and these have always made a diff from my small college apt by the freeway to the house I live in the hills now, would never grow without a nice carbon filter set up even when I move to Mendocino (Plus They create a nice ambient sound, increase C02 (bud size) and you should cut down on mold issues) not sure what part of the world you are in but filters in humid or arid, small or large grow, are key and worth the small investment for several reasons) If you're skeptical do some research.

Hello there, I recently started growing and purchased all new items. The fan you chose simply won't work. You will be very disappointed in the performance. I was going to use that fan as an inflow booster with a pre-filter. I quickly returned it because it just did not move enough air. The fan could not create positive pressure in the tent. CFM won't matter regarding if it can push air through the filter. What you want to look for is the static pressure rating of the fan. It will be in the unit of mmH2O. Try to get a fan rated at 6 mmH2O or greater. Basically, the motor must be strong enough to push air through a thicker medium like a filter.
My fan (Delta AFB1212HHE-F00) is a 120mm PC fan rated at 9mmH2O and 120 CFM. My other fan (Scythe Kaze 3000) is also 120mm PC fan rated at 6mmH2O and 133 CFM. Both push through my homemade carbon scrubber.
Also, from what I've read, you don't want to use a carbon 'fabric' like those sheets. They wear out quite quickly and making a filter from small activated carbon granules would be superior. You might be able to find one relatively cheap like this. You could attach a 6-to-4 inch rubber reducer like this and let it sit on top of your fan on the cabinet. I made my scrubber out of an atrium grate, pantyhose, rubber reducer and the carbon and it sits right on top of my bucket with no need to seal around it as the air pushes through nicely with not much back pressure.
I picked the greenhouse up on Amazon. It's very sturdy and pretty darn cheap for a walk-in size. I did slightly modify mine by omiting the lower shelves. This gave me larger niches to fit the size trees that I have and does not effect the sturdyness of the construction at all. Hope this helps!

If you're running in a small tent you can really get by with a small fan. You could check out a 4in kit from Amazon. It's cheaper than your current filter and comes with a fan and some ducting. That would be more than enough for your little tent. If you haven't chosen your seeds yet, I would recommend Mephisto genetics for autos. Great stuff, quick shipping. If you're in Canada they do have their shop closed for a few weeks but you can order from the US or UK store.
To stay low budget, you could use PC case fans. It depends on how stealth you need to be. If you need a filter for the smell, you might have to go with a legit ventilation kit which would be another $100 on Amazon. like this one

I have a four inch and a 6 inch fan and filter, 4 goes in, 6 goes out.
The rest of it I pretty much wing. My nutes are the fox farm trio.
Carbon filter eliminated nearly all odor. I went the first 3 or so weeks without it, then the smell started coming on strong as it was starting to preflower. Bought the filter and it was night and day. Highly suggest it.

I've been a fan of the SecretJardin brand of tents. You might be interested in the DR90 or the DR120.
I've heard people mentioning the Vivosun line of tents positively as well. I've not used them but I can't say I've heard anyone complaining about quality from that brand.
The real cheap tents can come with some problems so be aware before you buy. Do a bit of Google-fu and check reviews to make sure you don't see anyone complaining about harsh chemical odors coming from the tent or cheap materials that come apart.

a good starter pack of nutrients - a small sized grow tent that can fit 4 plants - a fan ventillation system that will handle the smell when you get to flowering - airpots if you want to grow from soil - or DWC hydro buckets if you want to go hydro note that these are pretty easy to DIY, buckets are $5 ea and pumps run $20-50. LED lights to grow with for $160 or you can skip up to the good stuff and go with Quantum Boards which are far superior - not on amazon You can do a lot of your own work on these boards to make them not as expensive.
After your get some seeds, either from bag seed or from an online seller, its really just a matter of paying attention to what the plants are doing and keeping a good schedule with your nutrients or watering. There is a ton of information online, both on reddit and elsewhere that can guide you with anything.

You will have very minimal, but not absolutely undetectable smell outside the tent. I would expect no smell outside of your 6x12 room. When you open your tent during flower, there will be a strong pleasant fresh weed odor.
> If I had to go out of town for any reason, would the room still function fine with the door and window both closed for 2-3 days? (Assume I would need a dehumidifier and AC unit)
You should be A-OK for 3-4 days unattended with no special arrangements aside from watering before you leave. Yes, you should expect to need a dehumidifier and A/C unit. A window A/C is usually preferable to central air, because it keeps the air in the 6x12 room isolated from the air in the rest of the house.

With the fan/blower you linked, yes, it would be pretty noisy. I would suggest you upgrade to this 6" blower/filter and get the speed controller. It makes for smooth, quiet operation on reduced speed.

You need to watch your power budget for sure. You probably have one 15 or 20 amp circuit to that room, which limits you to 1800 or 2400 watts. Your grow tent will eat up 600 watts. A 5000 BTU window A/C uses another 600 watts. That leaves you with 600-1200 watts to run your computer. If you throw a dehumidifier in there, and everything starts running at once, you could start tripping breakers. I would suggest you find out what size circuit is feeding your room. It's going to be close.

A taller tent is always better. Especially with the CMH light fixture, which likes a little extra room. If you can get a taller tent, then get it. That said, if your plant training is on point, you can make it work with any strain.

Yes, you can trim at your desk 2x2 desk. It's a smelly process and the smell can linger for a couple days. If you do it with a fan in the window you can keep odor to a minimum.

Growing is not for everyone, but if you have the disposition for it, it's a wonderful, wonderful hobby. If you buy weed regularly it will save you a ton of money. I think you should go for it.

I've had quite a few set ups in the past, and this one is my favorite by far. It's made in such a way, that I can close all the doors and it would be unnoticed. If it's dead silent you can hear the 6" fan running, but with the AC running you can't notice it at all. It's great!

So my set up, is also a closet, that is slightly bigger than my tent. So in order to manage heat better I may take my tent out and put mylar on the closet walls. I like having the tent so I can have clones/saplings in the closet with light, and have my flowering ones stay in complete darkness. I'll try to take a photo for you too!

I also, just ordered my 480W Quantum Board light, which arrives on May 29th! I know I could do more to better manage heat and not need a new light, but this seems like an opportunity to upgrade so I'll take it.

Here is how I do it. Tent on right gets first air ( the coldest and driest as it's for flowering ) air moves to second tent ( the air is warmer and more humid now, ideal for vegging flowers),the air moves into the dry tent,which usually has it's own dehumidifier. Finally exhausting thru a carbon filter back into the room.

I hope this inspires ideas. It wont smell like cannabis in the exhaust air until like 2 weeks into floweing, from that point it progressively gets WAY stronger. I highly advise a carbon filter if you want stealth. -i use a BreatheRight by Allen for my allergies. It’s expensive ($600-ish) but if you get the charcoal filter it’s crazy good. Will remove scented candle smells and Bacon smells as well as the very marijuana smoke that I smoke inside my own apartment.
I haven’t received any complaints. It’s been 2 years.
The next thing would be to go one step higher and purpose an in-line fan filter and attach a huge 24” charcoal filter.
This option is actually WAYYYY more effective, but requires just a little bit of knowing how to put stuff together, and it’s slightly loud, but god damn, it totally cleans all smells and allergies.

The Allen is more aesthetically pleasing and is a complete unit that requires zero installation. Simply plug and play. This model is for 1100sqft. If you get this, get the charcoal filter. They have lots of filters.
The in-line fan and filter option will be like 10x more powerful and way more affordable than the Allen, but unpleasant to look at and is louder.

You can look in to snap clamps as an alternative. I bought a few, and after buying everything I've seen at least one comment claiming using all snap clamps is better than wiggle wire, and that you can pull the plastic tight through it .. I haven't seen it myself though.

Yeah, that makes sense. Everything I've read says the once per minute is for heat not smell but heat I'm not worried about right now since it's winter. I might just get a 6" fan and use my 4" filter/hose for now until I need it. This will give me 175 CFM with my 4" stuff and over 400 if I upgrade to 6" later.

Big question on mind is the best way to utilize? I am thinking of using my 2x4 for "vegging" and this 5x5 for flowering? Not sure about moving plants around though. Could also just keep two separate staggered grows going. I thought I could just do all stages in one tent but the different humidity and temperature requirements would mean compromising on the best environment for each stage. Another option is to try a scrog in the 2x4 and a 'regular' grow in the 5x5.

I imagine you could purchase these activated charcoal sheets that you can cut to size! Tape a plate with a hole over it and you should be able to cut any size you want. The fan you spec'd looks like it should be able to handle the load that the charcoal filter will cause (it is going to be like trying to breathe through a straw rather than just your mouth).
Another option would be something like this where you have an all in one filter/blower system. It's more money but it will handle all that obstruction better. Alternatively you can go to a harware store and buy an inline duct booster. You should be able to control the fan speed with a big triac or possibly PWM signal.
Great, so I'm looking at this set for my ventilation needs if I do decide on a 3x3 tent. Still not sure about which LED light would be sufficient and of good quality though.
I tapped my buddy who is an electrician to help me and we will be moving them out of the tent. Gonna build a little shelf to rest them on outside of the tent.
