I'm on vegan CICO not vegan keto, but I know people who are and they tell me they eat: Beyond Meat (1 gram net carb), Beyond sausages (2 net carbs), Gardein chick'n strips are 4 net carb, Some nutritional yeasts are 1 net carb, Mushrooms 1 net carb, bell peppers are 3 net carb per 100 grams, 2 cups of spinach = 1 net carb, chinese cabbage = 1.5 carb per cup, some wraps are 1 or 2 net carbs, low carb bagels, low carb cookies, avocado pesto, low carb bread, shirataki rice & noodles. Here's an example of a low carb pizza wrap. Many of the more nutrient dense veggies are lower carb, so that's good, but really vegan keto is going to require a lot of creativity with sauces etc. Just doing low carb is much easier obviously.

edit to add - a few other lower carb meals I found looking through the sub I help mod:

  • Edit #1: I'll post recipes and macros later tonight!

  • Edit #2: Macros updated, Will post recipe later (I need to go make dinner for tonight!) (If my math is bad, I'm sorry in advance, it was a long day) I used MFP for calculations.

  • Edit #3: Recipe

Whole Whole Wheat Pesto Pasta and Mozzarella Dish

    • 7 ounces uncooked whole wheat rotini (I used Aldi Fit'n Active brand)

    • 4 cups broccoli florets (I used 1 bag of frozen Broccoli, just threw it in the microwave)

    • 1 package Knorr® Pesto sauce mix

    • 1 Tablespoon olive oil

    • 3 Tbsp. wine vinegar (or regular)

    • 1 pint of cherry tomatoes [or grape tomatoes], halved

    • 1 cup cubed mozzarella cheese

    • Salt and ground black pepper to taste

    DIRECTIONS

  1. Cook pasta according to package directions, adding broccoli during last 5 minutes of cooking. Drain and rinse with cold water until completely cool.

  2. Combine Knorr® Pesto sauce mix, olive oil and vinegar in large bowl with wire whisk. Add pasta with broccoli, tomatoes, cheese, salt and pepper; toss to coat. Serve immediately or chill until ready to serve.

My room mate used to eat my food. Well used to until I put this in some carne asada I made. I took him to the hospital where the conversation I overheard was hilarious.

"How did this happen?"

"I ate some food my room mate cooked."

"well is he ok?"

"yeah."

"well then stop stealing his food."

Apparently they deal with this type of thing a lot being in a college town.

Hey a fellow vegetarian Indian! I've been on this diet for over 8 months now and it's definitely possible, although not eating eggs will make it a tad harder. Below are some things (sans eggs) that I eat regularly. Note that this is a little heavy on carbs for a strict keto diet since will end up eating between 30-40g of carbs per day. The daily limit to keep you in ketosis varies from person to person. This worked for me. I don't calorie count since it's too much of a hassle for me. So you might want to tailor this plan based on your needs. I've changed parts of this diet since I started working at a new place where I can get cafeteria food.

Breakfast: Bullet proof coffee. It's simple, fast, keeps you satiated and is heavy on fat. After having this, the rest of your meals only need to be low carb, with good amounts of protien and fat.

Other meal ideas:

  • Low carb tortillas are your friend! I used to eat [Josep's low carb tortillas] (https://www.josephsbakery.com/shop/flax-oat-bran-and-whole-wheat/flax-oat-bran-and-whole-wheat-flour-tortilla.html). These tortillas tasted very similar to wheat rotis. Yes, they are 5g net carb per tortilla, and I used to have 4 daily (2 lunch, 2 dinner). As I said, this plan is a little high on carbs.

  • What's roti without a good serving of butter on it, eh? Smother your roti until it drips with butter!

  • Now that you have your roti, we can make some sabjis to go with it! Vegetables you can use are spinach, mushrooms, cauliflower, cabbage, eggplant, cucumbers, bell peppers (capsicum), turnips (strict ketoers might disagree) and okra (lady's finger). Throw in an occasional tomato and onion. Now you have an entire array of subji ideas open to you. Palak paneer, gobi masala, baigan ka bartha, cabbage kuruma ... well you get the idea. You can add cream cheese to your gravy curries to make it thicker and add more fat. I used shredded coconut in the kuruma in order to add more fat. Paneer is also a great addition, although I rarely had it. Check the nutrition info for all ingredients and use your best judgement.

  • But you can't have roti without some good dal, can you? [Black soy beans] (http://www.amazon.com/Eden-Organic-Black-Beans-15-Ounce/dp/B000GZS9Q6/ref=sr_1_1?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1405884105&sr=1-1&keywords=black+soybeans) to the rescue! Unlike other beans and lentils, Black soy beans are low on carb and high on protein. Hello Roti and Rajma! Cheese on Rajma is also great!

  • You can also explore vegan meat options such as veggie sausages and patties. Steam a bag of frozen brocolli/cauliflower, top it with cheese and add a vegan sausage for a quick, lazy meal! Froze vegetables plus eggs gives you even more options (should you consider eating eggs).

Hope this plan gives you a starting point. Believe me when I say this diet works! You feel much better after cutting out the carbs, especially after being on a carb heavy diet such as a vegetarian Indian diet. Good luck!
u/Zombie_Lover · 14 pointsr/Cooking

And sometimes an acidic element. Sometimes something is just too rich, but still lacking something even if well salted. A tiny squeeze of lemon or lime can often brighten it and release a much more complex flavor profile. I keep a jar of Tajin around just for this situation. It really comes in handy.

u/PrincessBabyMuffin · 13 pointsr/ketorecipes

I made keto Louisiana "red beans" and "rice" with sausage! Sorry for the low picture quality. The recipe is a bit involved, but I like my keto meals with some complexity.

-1/2 onion, diced

-1/2 red or green bell pepper, diced

-1 jalapeño pepper, cored, seeded, & minced (optional)

-2 cloves garlic, minced

-1lb cooked smoked sausage links, sliced (I found a brand that has 1 carb per link. You could also use shrimp and/or chicken)

-1 cup chicken broth (or water + bouillon)

-15oz can black soy beans, drained and rinsed (I used these https://www.amazon.com/Eden-Organic-Black-Beans-15-Ounce/dp/B000GZS9Q6 )

-1 bay leaf

-1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

-1/2 tsp dried thyme

-1/4 tsp dried sage

-2 tsp dried parsley

-1 tsp Cajun or Creole seasoning (like Tony C's)

-Salt & pepper to taste

-24oz riced cauliflower (I used 2x 12oz bags of the frozen Trader Joe's brand)

-Avocado oil, butter, or lard for sautéing

-Xanthan gum (optional)

  1. Spread cauliflower rice out on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper and put in the oven @ 300 degrees to dry out while prepping other ingredients, up to 30 minutes. If using frozen, it does not need to be thawed first
  2. Sauté onion, bell pepper, and jalapeño in oil over medium heat in a 2qt pot until softened, then stir in minced garlic
  3. Add sliced sausage and sauté until heated through (make sure it's the pre-cooked kind)
  4. Add broth, beans, and spices. Stir to combine
  5. Simmer over medium-low heat for 20-30mins or until liquid is reduced. You can sprinkle a pinch of xanthan gum in if you want the liquids thicker
  6. When the mixture is almost done simmering, heat some oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add cauliflower rice and stir/sauté continuously for around 5 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste
  7. Put cauliflower rice in a bowl, pour sausage/beans mixture on top (remove bay leaf first) and enjoy!

Yield: 4 servings @ 8g net carbs each (would only be 6g net carbs if you use a zero-carb meat/protein. You could cut another 1-2 carbs per serving if you leave out the onions & peppers, but it would definitely change the overall taste.)

Secret Aardvark Habanero Hot Sauce. Arguably the most delicious tasting hot sauce, and served on the table at every restaurant in Portland. Perfect balance of heat and flavor. It's legit. I've had a bottle in my fridge since it hit the market. It's good on everything and quite infamous in the Northwest. It's a staple in many homes out here.

Jicama is a root veggie that is similar in texture and taste to a cross between a pear, apple, and potato.

The skin peels off effortlessly and it's easy to cut and fun to eat!

It's only 38 calories and 9carbs per 100g. I like to eat it with sliced cucumber and a sprinkling of tajin seasoning which is lime juice, salt, and chili pepper-not spicy but very flavorful.

You got me at "slap so hard" so I'll try to help. I think these are the same thing (with probably updated packaging).

They're Brach's, which usually sell big "sampler bags" for Halloween (which include many of the candies in this post + like Smarties and Bit-O-Honey and stuff, I think?) but I think you also might have a shot at finding them in a candy bulk section (which is probably where the old ladies got them).

Edit: This might be more what you're looking for. The packaging matches better and I guess it's "Columbina" brand, which matches one of the OPs candies. I feel like I've still seen them bulk, but now I'm not familiar with the brand.

As a keto dieter, maybe I can help out. None of it is really "convenient" food, you have to make pretty much all of it, but it help to kick the cravings.

  1. pasta - Black Bean Spaghetti or Egg-based fettucine.

  2. garlic bread - Low Carb Cauliflower breadsticks

  3. pie - Low Carb lemon Meringue Pie

  4. muffins - Customizable Keto Muffins

  5. crab cakes - Low Carb Crab Cakes

  6. mashed potatoes - Cheesy Cauliflower Mash

  7. chocolate cakes - Chocolate Sheet Cake

u/nice_t_shirt · 8 pointsr/vegan

Hey, I train 6-7 days a week, too. You should have no problem getting 60-70g protein a day just from whole foods, not even taking into account a protein shake. Though that also depends on your overall calorie intake, which you didn't mention. Just putting something simple together, 95g hemp seeds, 430g lentils, and 290g buckwheat is 2000 calories, 330g carbs, 43g fat, and 96g protein. There is plenty of room to play around there to swap out foods and stuff and still hit your protein macros.

  1. Vegan totally tastes like ass. Funny enough, mixed berry is the only flavor I think is half decent. Taste-wise, my favorite is Sunwarrior. If you can afford Vega, you should be able to afford Sunwarrior. I like the chocolate flavor. Though my favorite is TrueNutrition's hemp/rice/pea blend. Tastes better than Vega, not as good as Sunwarrior, but it's much cheaper than either and tastes good enough for me. Favorite flavors are chocolate fudge brownie and mocha.

  2. Sorry no recipe suggestions, I don't eat soy/tofu, but I eat a lot of beans and I just eat them with some spices or something, nothing fancy. Check out explore asia products - they're based on beans and have a lot of protein. Also lentil pastas are pretty good.

  3. Nuts, seeds, beans/lentils - or processed foods based on these like tofu, seitan, tempeh, TVP, peanut butter, etc.

  4. "Keep in mind I'm a broke uni student." You probably shouldn't buy Vega then :) Sounds like you have the bases covered. On top of oats, I might also add buckwheat, quinoa, and rice. Peanut butter is also cheap, very calorically dense, and has a good amount of protein.

  5. I'm not iron deficient, but just check out high iron foods. Molasses is one I use as a sweetener for shakes and stuff and it has a lot of iron. Also I've heard good things about the iron fish.

We have quite the collection of hot sauces in our household and Last Dab Reduxx has been my go to lately. Though it packs a punch it is delicious! Conversely, if you're looking for something with flavor and heat, I would recommend Secret Aardvark Habanero Sauce or Dirty Dicks. If you really want to go off the deep end Mad Dog 357 is also really tasty and definitely made me cry the first time I had it because the heat factor took me off guard.

I'll do my "fighter's meal". It's what I eat before I go to my Muay Thai class.

Avocado with this stuff on it. 2 Roma tomatoes with lemon juice on them. Some slices of Havarti cheese. A banana. A protein shake (milk and this stuff). Multivitamin, fish oil, vitamin D. And a whole lot of water throughout.

That'll give me a high, constant energy level for the next 4 hours. If I start getting tired or hungry, I'll devour one of these.

The main goal is healthy fats, fiber, protein, and no processed foods. That'll give you a nice steady energy source with no crashes and no foggy brain.

Salmon Oil

  • Benefit : Good source of Omega 3s and 6s, good for coat and skin health

  • Necessary?: Unless you have a steady source of grass fed proteins, it is highly recommended.

  • Use: Daily to several times a week, follow the recommended dosage on the bottle unless otherwise instructed. Avoid feeding multiple oils in one day/meal to prevent tummy upset..

  • Recommended Brand: Grizzly Salmon Oil - many salmon oils have soy in them, Grizzly does not.

    --------

    Pollock Oil

  • Benefit : Good source of Omega 3s and 6s, good for coat and skin health

  • Necessary?: Unless you have a steady source of grass fed proteins, it is highly recommended. Pollock Oil is a good substitute for Salmon Oil.

  • Use: Daily to several times a week, follow the recommended dosage on the bottle unless otherwise instructed. Avoid feeding multiple oils in one day/meal to prevent tummy upset.

    Recommended Brand: Grizzly Pollock Oil

    -------

    Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

  • Benefit : Good for coat and skin health, frequently used as a dietary supplement and ointment for dogs who suffer from skin allergies. Some people will also use it for flea control.

  • Necessary?: Many people wont feed it because it is a plant based oil. It is not a necessary part of the diet.

  • Use: Added to food Daily to several times a week - Feed 1tsp per 10lbs of body weight. Can also be used as an ointment.

  • Recommended Brand: Nature's Way Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

    -------

    Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

  • Benefit : Balance PH level, promote digestive health and treatment of parasites.

  • Necessary?: It is a plant based product which may bother some PMR feeders - the uses (especially external) are worthwhile for many, however.

  • Use: Added to food a couple times a week - 1tsp per 50lbs of body weight. Can also be used to bathe (instead of shampoo) and used to treat fleas.

  • Recommended Brand: Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar

    -------

    Pre/Pro-Biotic

  • Benefit : Support digestive health and nutrient absorption

  • Necessary?: Some variety of Pre/Pro-biotic is recommended, especially for dogs new to raw or dogs with sensitive stomachs.

  • Use: Added to food daily - follow recommended dosage on the package

  • Recommended Brand: Wholistic Digest All

    -------

    Multi-Vitamin

  • Benefit : Ensure all necessary vitamins and minerals are included within your dog's diet

  • Necessary?: Some people opt to feed vitamins, others don't. I like the peace of mind of adding in a multi-vitamin a few times a week.

  • Use: Added to food daily or several times a week - follow recommended dosage on the package

  • Recommended Brand: Solid Gold Seameal - this contains plant products which some PMR prefer not to feed. There are other options out there if you choose not to feed plant products.

    -------

    Turmeric

  • Benefit : Anti-inflammatory properties can help with allergies and joint health/pain. Also supports digestive health and can boost the metabolism.

  • Necessary?: No. Some people use it to support joint health with/instead of glucosamine, it is also used for dogs who suffer from allergies.

  • Use: Added to food daily or several times a week 1/8 - 1/4tsp per 10lbs of body weight

    -------

There are likely others/other suggestions for brands, but this is what I regularly supplement with. I know many PMR feeders will avoid plant based products, but I don't mind them so much for supplementation.

If anyone is curious you can buy a similar type of candy at Amazon. Popin' Cookin' has many adorable types. I've placed an order for the Sushi kit myself. They also have pizza, ramen and a few other types.

Googling this, I think that the type in the video is the non-edible play food, still super neat though. Hope that helps.

Edit: I rewatched the video and looked at the box again. This is also candy. My bad.

WSAYWT: Trickers. Top down. Little redboi popping out.

AOTD1: I love spring. Chicago can be shit for a few months of the year, but when it's above 50°F and sunny, this city is the best in the world (I'm biased).

AOTD2: I grew up in a very spice-averse home. My mother is a self-described "spice weeny" so I never really did hot foods. Then I met my wife and she put sriracha and other hot sauces on everything and I felt like I had to learn or she would never love me. And I did learn and now I love hot sauce. There are currently at least 4 different hot sauces in my house.

  • Cholula - classic vinegar red hot sauce (way better than tabasco if you ask me)
  • Sriracha - the Huy Fong kind, accept no immitations
  • Green Chilli Sauce - Some off brand from Marianos (midwest grocer chain)
  • Ardvark habenero - it's freaking great

[Edit] I just remembered we did have one "spicy" thing in my house growing up. This local radio station put out a mustard (I have no idea why) and it was called "Bite Your Butt Mustard" and we bought a bunch. It was actually really good, like a slightly horseradishy honey mustard, but almost more honey than mustard.

I commented earlier in the thread but I'm a strong proponent of Soylent as well.

I suggest trying both the powder and the liquid. Powder is much cheaper($1.83 powder vs $2.63 liquid per 400kcal), but that won't do you much good if it just sits in your pantry because you don't want to clean the container to mix up a new batch and wait for it to sit.

If you end up going liquid, it's now available on Amazon Launchpad - https://www.amazon.com/Soylent-Ready-Drink-Food-Bottles/dp/B01EUEIL3E?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0

If you set up a subscription for either the powder or the liquid on soylent.com, you get 5% off. If you subscribe to the liquid on amazon, it's 5% off, but if you subscribe to 5 items on amazon it goes up to 15% off.

I know this looks like a shill post, but I really have no association with soylent other than finding their product to be a real benefit to me. With that said, check out /r/soylent as well, because one thing that really makes me love Soylent is they really don't care about people making DIY copies or even competing with them, so there are a lot of soylent clones out there and if you're not in america some of those other ones will be easier to get. A lot of the clones have more flavor options which I'd love to try, but if you are in america, most of the clones are much more expensive to ship here.

You can of course flavor soylent yourself however you want as its very neutral, both powder and liquid. With the liquid I like to squirt in some chocolate syrup and just shake it in the bottle. With the powder, flavored protein powder works well if you know what you're doing (e.g you arent depending on the bottle being 400kcals /trying to use it to track your intake closely), and blending the powder with some fresh fruit is a good way to go. Though I most often just drink it as is, it's not bad, it's just not good, it's just..what you need.

A miniature sewing kit. When you’re running missions outside, clothes tend to get ripped, and with only limited numbers, life can get rough. A sewing kit helps.
Spirarcha chili sauce. If your soldier likes spicy foods, send them this. It’s spicy, it has flavor, and it will last them a few months.

Socks and underwear. Send them hiking socks and replacement pairs of underwear. Clothes tend to get gross and if they don’t have laundry, sometimes it is for the best to toss out old underclothes and wear new ones.

Beef jerky.

Trail mix of various types.

Great ideas for one-time gifts. These range from relatively cheap, to pricy and are a great surprise to a soldier stationed anywhere. I’ve included links to the products to give you an idea of what they look like, though don’t take those links as the only/cheapest place to find them:

Adjustable two-point sling. On base they have to carry around a weapon everywhere, and on mission they’ll be going some serious distance with it in their hands. If they are still using an Army-issue plain sling life is going to get a bit annoying. An adjustable two-point sling makes things more convenient and lets them ready a weapon to fire without an awkward movement on a mission. Ignore this if they are using a machine-gun, because those use heavy duty slings. Various companies make these, I prefer the VTAC, but they are all similar in make.

Surefire Earplugs. On mission, soldiers are supposed to wear earplugs, but many don’t because its uncomfortable and often all they are issued are cheap low qualifty plugs. Surefire earplugs conform to the shape of the ear and they are designed to allow someone to still be able to hear conversation level noise while protecting from high level noise. These are great.

Head-Loc helmet straps. One of the greatest pains is a helmet that won’t stay secure. The Head-Loc straps stay tighter and make the helmet so comfortable that you forget you’re wearing it.

PMAGs. Magpul plastic magazines, or PMAGs are high quality replacements for metal GI magazines. Army issued metal magazines are often used for years past the date that they should be retired and they are prone to feeding issues (I won’t get into the details) and PMAGs fix many of those issues and give a soldier more confidence in their equipment. A combat load is 7 magazines, so don’t feel the need to buy more than that, and even one or two PMAGs is greatly appreciated. Ignore if they are using a machinegun.

Head-lamp. Walking around an outpost at night is tricky and Afghanistan can get dark, a head-lamp is a great help to keep your soldier from stubbing their toe or walking into barbed wire. Get only with some kind of red or blue light filter.

Mechanix gloves. Soldiers need to wear gloves on mission and they tend to get torn up, a replacement pair of mechanixs gloves is a good choice.

Percentages are more useful for people on medical keto, say epileptics. Here, it is more typical to track in grams.

People on here tend to have the most success keeping to 20 g net carbs per day which is carbs minus fiber (in US). Outside US the label typically already reflects the math, is my understanding.

So, you can eat anything that fits into your macros. The calculator in the sidebar is a good one, set carbs to 20 g and activity to sedentary, most folks do a 20% deficit.

If you want to eat pinto beans, the rest of your day has to be pretty carb free. Black coffee and a steak for your other meal would fit nicely. ;)

As an alternative, Black Soybeans (have only seen them canned) are very low in net carbs and are great in burritos, tacos, etc.

At 20 carbs or less a day, I’m down 74 lbs since the end of spring, and I don’t even exercise or really even try to run a calorie deficit. You can literally just get trays of Whataburger patties with cheese, fried eggs, and all that jazz.

Check out /r/ketorecipes and /r/keto for extra. There’s a recipe for just about every form of Mexican food. (Bonus tip: baby corn has no carbs, and fiber doesn’t count, so you can get the HEB low-carb tortillas if you’re feeling lazy.)

Edit: ps - black soybeans have 1 net carb and can be mashed and refried like pintos. Watch out for added carbs in shredded cheese and bacon, but both are A-OK otherwise.

u/Kibology · 4 pointsr/Cooking

Wikipedia suggests that Italians use an oil made from olive oil and Calabrian chilis:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chili_oil#Italy

...I don't know exactly what sort of hot oil's expected for the Roberta's "bee sting pizza" you showed, but if I had to hazard a guess it would be that.

Honestly, I suspect that any sort of chili oil made from any chilis in any oil will work, if the intent is just to add a little heat (in addition to the hot soppresata.)

You can make your own chili oil by heating up some vegetable oil and then pouring it over dried chili flakes. I've been known to heat up cheap olive oil (a highly-processed one is best for this, not extra-virgin) and pour it over "pizza pepper" flakes to make it. (You have to use a sufficient quantity of chili flakes to keep the oil from incinerating them. Note that it may come out shockingly spicy -- after it cools down you can mix a little of the chili oil with plain oil to dilute it.) It's a common homemade Chinese condiment, so a Google search on "chili oil" will turn up many recipes and tutorial videos, some plain, and some with extra ingredients.

Here's a (rather different) store-bought Chinese hot oil topping I like on my pizzas:

http://nymag.com/strategist/article/lao-gan-ma-best-chili-sauce-review.html

https://www.amazon.com/Lao-Gan-Chili-Crisp-Sauce/dp/B0051D84JU

Stores that carry Chinese products should have it -- the brand name is "Lao Gan Ma" and the specific product is "Spicy Chili Crisp". It's relatively mild as chili oils go (I could eat it all by itself!) and it's loaded with crunchy things (such as black beans) and salt and MSG. It's a whole bunch of comfort-food flavors all at once. But it's probably not remotely like what Roberta's pizza uses.

Not necessarily low calorie, but very high fiber and protein. They taste good, better than any other pasta replacement in my opinion.

u/grewestr · 4 pointsr/grilling

Not OP, but I make wings regularly on the kettle. For regular wings:
-Set up kettle like OP, coals on one side
-Set all wings skin side down on a sheet with paper towel under it to dry the skin
-Sear wings skin side down over coals for 1-3 minutes until slightly charred
-Flip and sear other side for 1 minute
-Transfer to other side of grill skin side up
-Place lid on with vent open and directly over the wings
-Wait 5-20 minutes depending on how you like the wings done then toss them in sauce.

This gives the best of both worlds. A nice charred sear that makes the skin super tender and a indirect cooking period to crisp everything up. I usually marinade half of them in a mixture of Sabauce and Aardvark for some extra flavor. I've seen people have really good results using the Vortex as well.

u/RruinerR · 4 pointsr/backpacking

Ramen packet.
MCD pancake butter or two.
Carrot.
Fresh greenbeans/sugar snap peas (lots of grocery stores have them in loose bulk. Enough for X meals)
Sriracha packet (panda Express has them. Just ask do t have to buy anything)

Can do this as a soup or drained noodles. Add water , boil with sliced carrots and beans/peas. Few mins depending on your taste for softness. Add noodles cook the 3 min for them.
Optional: drain water (keep for soup)
Add ramen flavor packet and butter. Mix up and eat. (Sriracha as needed)

Garlic powder (very little) is also good but not required. Can make your own seasoning as well and ditch the ramen seasoning. I'd say play around at home either way. Lots of veggie options out there that are light and will keep a day or two.

Also, there are lots of ramens out there besides the basic ones at normal grocery stores. My city has a pretty big vietnamese community and their grocery stores have some pretty fancy ones. I'll find and link some as they are on amazon as well. These have 3, 4, 5 packets of seasonings/oils/spices and are pretty dang good (I tend to add veggies to most)

Dont like/want noodles? Rice works too. I'm sure there are other options as well. Cant think of any at the moment.

Oh yeah. Dried mushrooms. The asian market or Amazon should have those too. Great to add. Add towards end. Don't need too much hydration.

I've been looking at Soylent for a while. I've heard good things, and it seems like it would be well suited to being a meal replacement for people with IBD. I have to mention that I haven't tried it yet though, so I can't guarantee the quality.

u/herbivorous-cyborg · 4 pointsr/nutrition

I am 6'1" and 135lbs. I have a hard time consuming enough calories with regular foods so I use Soylent to make up the extra calories. I drink 2 bottles of Soylent per day (Each bottle is 14oz) which equates to 800 calories total. That means I only need 400 calories for each of my 3 meals per day unless I expend a lot of calories through exercise.

u/UnicornBestFriend · 3 pointsr/happy

Agreed.

Fellow instant-noodle lover here. If you find your local Asian market - the legit one that Asian immigrants go to - you can find a ton of stuff to kick up your ramen. Cheap veg, we're talking 3 lb bags of baby bok choy for $2, fitty-cent green onion, and hella cheap ground pork, something like $2/lb. Also, delicious tinned fish (under $2).

But the best shit is the sauce aisle.

Good ramen comes with several packets: freeze dried veg, powder seasoning, and the grease packet. The ten cent stuff only comes with the powder. To make up for the grease packet, you can get either sesame oil or chili oil. You can get a tub of curry paste for under $3 and make curry noodles; one tub should yield 30-40 servings. Or Korean gojuchang.

This is my favorite and it's around $4 a jar in the market.

You can also save up any fat left from cooking, like bacon drippings or chicken fat, freeze it, and use it to silk up your ramen.

It makes a ten cent bag into at least a $2.50 bag.

I like to use white pepper and occasionally some sesame oil for lighter pork/chicken flavored soups. If you can get Shichimi Togarashi, that's probably one of the best spices. It's more commonly sprinkled over udon but it'll work nicely with just about any soup.

Ghost pepper: 1 of them INSTANTLY can be recommended. ADOBOLOCO HAMAJANG is INSANELY delicious. if there is a cost plus world market near you, they probably have it. if you are lucky, they are in the clearance section. manageable heat. EXCELLENT flavor. its more of a pepper water than your traditional hot sauce but w/e.

habanero: secret aardvark habanero hot sauce is by far my favorite habanero sauce. i would avoid "DA BOMB" like the plague. literally no flavor at all, and it just feels like you are stabbing your tongue with a hot knife.

Trinidad scorpion: personally, i cheated with this one. i am PROBABLY the only person out there with an actual BOTTLE of the Buffalo Wild Wings "Scorpion Rum" hot sauce. scorpion peppers mixed with meyers dark rum makes for a SERIOUSLY delicious sauce. shame it as a limited time only deal...

Yes, they now do. 2.0 at least, not 1.5 There's also plenty of people reselling as well. Here's their official link.

https://www.amazon.com/Soylent-Ready-Drink-Food-Bottles/dp/B01EUEIL3E?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0

You can subscribe 5 times (60 bottles a month) to it to get a 15% discount.

u/gulbronson · 3 pointsr/AskSF

You can look here. It's also on Amazon with free 1 day shipping for prime members.

u/DelayedEntry · 3 pointsr/soylent
u/throwaway234f32423df · 3 pointsr/soylent

You were probably looking at listings from unauthorized resellers, which is a common mistake because Amazon does fuck-all to clarify if you're looking at the real listing or not.

You're better off bookmarking the correct page since Amazon makes it so difficult to find: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EUEIL3E/

Any other 2.0 listing you might find is an unauthorized reseller, and at the current time any listing for any Soylent product other than 2.0 is also unauthorized. They did have bars officially listed for a while, and I think they're working on Coffiest. Also, if the page doesn't say "Amazon Launchpad", you're definitely in the wrong place.

The base Amazon price and the base website price are always identical. The Soylent website offers a 5% discount for subscriptions; Amazon offers a base 5% discount for subscriptions but it rises to 15% if you have 5 or more Subscribe & Save items shipped to you in your monthly shipment. You can do this with 5 boxes of 2.0, but you have to do 5 individual subscriptions; it won't count if you do 1 subscription with a quantity of 5.

You can get the same 15% discount on the Soylent website with the 5% subscription discount + 10% coupon discount; there are permanent 10% coupon codes and occasional larger coupon codes, but they only apply to the first shipment of the subscription so you have to constantly cancel and re-subscribe. Amazon is a lot simpler, plus a lot of people have credit cards that give cash back on Amazon purchases.

Spices and condiments should always get a priority. Try to add something to your inventory each month, so you can have variety even when it's the end of the month and you are down to half a case of ramen and some rice.

  • Sriracha - "I put that *** on everything.
  • Sweet Chili-garlic sauce - what god intended for chicken. You can make your own - but you can find good ones at any decent supermarket or Asian corner store.
  • Chili-garlic paste. Deliciously intense.
  • Curry (Sweet Madras Curry is fairly safe, other curry blends can rip your lips off. In a good way, but be warned.)
  • Balsamic vinegar. Great for saute', salads, etc. Adds a lot of flavor at a fairly low price per serving.
  • Balsamic reduction. Seemingly expensive, but it's not. It's concentrated, rich, deep and sweet; goes on everything from meat to ice cream.
  • Garlic powder - Along with salt and pepper, it's a basic.

So, for that naked pasta - 2 or 3 tbs of margarine or extra-virgin olive oil, a small clove of garlic, pressed, a drizzle of balsamic reduction ~an eighth of a teaspoon, be scant with it - microwave in a container with a cover until just hot, blend by shaking. Drizzle over your veggies and pasta. No need to use it all at once - it will keep nicely.

Ok, now I'm hungry. Which reminds me - broke college students should probably get into lacto-fermentation. Saurkraut, kimchee, etc all add tremendous nutrition and flavor at very low cost. /r/fermentation has you covered. The big win here is that you can scoop up all the marked-down produce and ferment it. It's also a thing that complements /r/freeganism. Saurkraut is particularly easy and I promise you - if you think it's kinda sour and yet bland, it doesn't have to be. And it's cheap like borcht.

Last week I was discussing the idea of having a sushi pizza. I kicked around the idea a little bit and decided I would do a Shaggy Dog inspired pizza. Normal pizza crust with dragon sauce (Kewpie and Rooster sauce) and cream cheese base. I did a very thin coating of sushi rice in the sauce (I'd leave this out next time) and then some green onions and shrimp. I did just enough Mozzarrella cheese to make everything gel together (about 1/3 of the amount I'd normally use). After it came out of the oven, I added slices of avacado, cucmbers and sprinkled with shredded fake crab. I found it tasted best if you let it sit for about 10 minutes.

u/jordanlund · 3 pointsr/WTF

The sauces are pretty easy to find, any Asian grocery will have them or any grocery store with a decent Asian section.

Black soy beans can be used in place of black beans anywhere you like. They are the only keto-friendly bean that I know of. (An equivalent amount of black beans would have 24g net carbs.) Put them in some keto-friendly chili with beefy crumble to up the protein, eat them with tofu/eggs in a scramble, make a Mexican-inspired bean dip out of them and eat with veggies or cheese chips... Tons of options for them! :)

I always got this brand, and I found it at health food stores as well as big chain grocery stores that have a decent natural foods selection.

I buy them from Amazon, but they aren't prime eligible and you have to buy a whole dozen at once. I did it, though, because I use them in a lot of recipes: http://www.amazon.com/Eden-Organic-Black-Beans-15-Ounce/dp/B000GZS9Q6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381764143&sr=8-1&keywords=black+soybeans+eden

u/fuzzysqurl · 3 pointsr/ketorecipes

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. Boneless, Skinless Chicken Thighs. Cut into small pieces
  • 1 Tbsp. Olive Oil
  • 1 medium Onion, diced
  • 1 tsp. Garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp. Ground Cumin
  • 2 tsp. Dried Oregano
  • 1 tsp. Cayenne Pepper
  • 1/4 c. Shredded Cheese (I personally used Cheddar)
  • 1/4 c. Heavy Whipping Cream
  • 1 qt. Chicken Stock
  • 3 cans Eden Organic Black Soy Beans. Eden Organic is probably the most accessible brand but you can use whatever you find. Note: Black soy beans taste more like traditional black beans rather than yellow soy beans.

    Instructions:

Put olive oil, onion, and chicken into large pan on the stove. Cook until the chicken is no longer pink on the outside. Add garlic and cook for another minute or so. Add every other ingredient and bring to a boil. Reduce heat slightly and let cook uncovered for 20 minutes or so.

    Tweaks:

You can increase the amount of cheese in the recipe to help thicken the sauce a little. You can also top with more cheese or sour cream after serving.

I didn't have any jalapeno or other peppers on hand but you can definitely add them in for extra heat. Speaking of heat, this chili does have a bit of a kick to it so if you're sensitive to spice just leave out or reduce the amount of Cayenne Pepper.

Finally, you could serve with pork rinds or something if you wish to have a crunch.

    Nutrition:

Makes about 11 cups of food, which I estimate to be about 6 servings (I took about 1 cup out to eat. Ended up going back for seconds)

I'm currently sporting platinum blonde hair (bleached from natural black), and while my natural texture isn't too badly damaged, my hair's been way drier than I'm used to. A combination of coconut oil, argan oil, this hair masque, and some CHI products are keeping it soft at the moment.

I'm using this blue-tinted shampoo and conditioner to maintain the blonde color, but back when I was sporting pink hair, I used the TIGI bedhead sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner and it was fairly good to me (didn't wash color out all that fast, kept hair looking shiny and feeling soft and healthy.)

I relate SO MUCH. I am still in school as well (graduating next year), but I am an online student and I work full time. So when I'm not stressing about finding a job after I graduate, I am stressing about work or grades. I always get told that I act like a middle aged woman, though being married and working a desk job adds to that image.

  1. There was a moment awhile back where I was feeling incredibly overwhelmed by EVERYTHING. Specifically, I was really worried about the possibility of finding a job in education or getting into a graduate program after graduation. That on top of worrying about my current job lasting until I was able to get out of school had me super high strung. I realized I couldn't do anything about either of those situations, so I got a cup of tea, drew a bath, and listened to classical music while I read a book. That is now my go to "stress relief" when I get overwhelmed.

  2. Whole Fresh Rabbit - The reviews are hilarious.

  3. Don't sweat the petty stuff and don't pet the sweaty stuff

  4. Take deep breaths. You can do this. You have made it through your college career. People graduate with loans higher than your and make it. You have accomplished something - take time to celebrate that! And try to focus on taking things day by day. Sufficient is each day for its own troubles. Constantly focusing on your fears of the future will lead to you forgetting today. (:

  5. Surprises are awesome!

  6. Thank you for the contest!

You're right, I am all of those things, and dudes are my specialty. (For the record, I do like Tabasco)

I find different dishes call for different sauces. The more sauces you try, the better of an idea you'll get for yourself what works with what. Note that the below links might not be the best prices and you can probably find a lot of these sauces at your local grocery store (unless you live in some cultural black hole like the American midwest). I spent my earlier years in southern California and developed a taste early on for Mexican cuisine, so my taste is highly reflective of that influence.

I enjoy these Mexican-style sauces:

  • Cholula - mainstream, overpriced, but decent

  • Tapatio - slightly more spicy than Cholula, a more peppery taste, for lack of a better description (on my part)

  • Valentina - One of the cheapest sauces I've come around, just douse everything in your path with it, similar to Tapatio

El Yucateco is a great brand, in my opinion. They have a lot of awesome varieties. If you go to an authentic Mexican restaurant, you'll likely find it there:

  • Green Chili Habenero - Don't let the color fool you, this is a nice spicy sauce with a good flavor

  • Kutbil-ik Mayan Style Habanero - This is a different flavor, but it's great and has a nice heat profile

  • 4 pack Sampler - why not just try them all. $12 ain't that much, my friend ;)

There are some other popular sauces which if I were to omit, people around here would be very angry:

  • Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce - This stuff packs nice heat with a garlicy-chili taste. I generally save it for Chinese and Indian food, and cup-noodle. Others like to put it on pizza and everything else. It is my opinion that they just don't have the right repertoire of sauces, but hey, if they like it, more power to them.

  • Frank's - You've already mentioned this, but this sauce and other similar Louisiana-style sauces are my favorite. Not very spicy, but they have a nice tangy flavor that goes great with Pizza, eggs, burgers, etc. Don't think about using this stuff on ethnic food, though. Stick to their sauces ;)

There are a lot of boutique sauces out there that just pump out the Scoville units for the hell of it. A lot of them are gag gifts or novelties, but there are people out there that genuinely enjoy the rush you can get from them - you do get an adrenaline rush, it IS a high. Most of the sauces like this, however, are intended for cooking beef chili and other dishes where a small amount can be distributed through a larger portion of food.

The recipe I used was based off Paula Deen’s Southern Fried Chicken recipe with some modifications: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/southern-fried-chicken-recipe.html

The 3 major modifications I made:

  • Substituted siracha hot sauce
  • Brining the chicken in buttermilk for 24 hours
  • Used a cast iron skillet instead of a deep pot (to get a nice crust on the chicken)

The most challenging parts of the cook were breaking down the chicken and keeping the oil at a steady 350.

    Food ingredients

  • 2-2.5lb chicken
  • Large container of vegetable oil (peanut oil is my favorite)
  • 3 eggs
  • ⅓ cup water
  • 1 cup + ½ tablespoon siracha (I like Huy Fong which you can get on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Huy-Fong-Sriracha-Chili-Bottle/dp/B0002PSOJW)
  • 2 cups self rising flour
  • ¼ cup + 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup + 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • ¼ cup garlic powder
  • ¼ cup + ½ tablespoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne 1/2 quart low fat buttermilk
  • 1.5 sprigs fresh sage
  • 1.5 sprigs fresh thyme
  • 1.5 sprigs fresh rosemary
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 2 cloves garlic

    Tools

  • Garlic smasher
  • A very sharp chef's knife
  • A large tupperware container (to hold the chicken for brining)
  • A medium tupperware container (to apply the dredge)
  • Oil thermometer (instant read is best)
  • Meat thermometer (for the chicken)
  • Large (10-15") cast iron pan (I used 12")
  • Cookie sheet and rack (to allow the chicken to rest)
  • A good pair of heat resistant tongs
  • Lemon zester

    Prepping (the day before)

I front-loaded some of the work the day before, too, but you could do this the day of.

    Break down the chicken

I brute forced 4 chickens on Friday and didn’t do enough research… here’s a good video on how to do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGb1G3CFZvc Another good one from Alton Brown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ9OLPC-dkE
I ended up with 2 drum sticks, 2 breasts, 2 thighs, and 2 wings. All of the pieces should include the bones, including the breast. Set it aside.

    Create the brine

Mix together in a large tupperware:

  • ½ quart low fat buttermilk
  • 1.5 sprigs fresh sage, bruised
  • 1.5 sprigs fresh thyme, bruised
  • 1.5 sprigs fresh rosemary, bruised
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 lemon: juice it, then add the zest
  • 2 cloves garlic, smashed
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne
  • ½ tablespoon siracha
  • ½ tablespoon smoked paprika

Add all the chicken pieces, seal it, and put it in the fridge for 12-24 hours. Flip the chicken halfway through.

    Create the egg/sauce mix

In another medium tupperware, mix together:
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup siracha
  • ⅔ cup water

    Create the dredge

In my cook, I just put 2 cups self rising flour in a tupperware.

    Create the house seasoning

Mix it together and put it into an old spice container or pizza shaker: 1 cup kosher salt ¼ cup black pepper ¼ cup garlic powder ¼ cup smoked paprika

    The cook

Do not cook the chicken cold. You want to time it so the chicken is near room temperature when you’re adding it to the oil. I waited about 45 minutes.

Add the oil to the pan. I filled mine just before ⅔ full. Bring the heat to 350, carefully monitoring using a thermometer. I had my burner at about 5.5/10.

Remove the chicken from the fridge and dump the brine down the drain. Remove all of the fresh herbs from the chicken and pat it dry with paper towels.

Season the chicken liberally on all sides with the house seasoning.

Using tongs, take the chicken and dunk it into the egg/hot sauce mixture. Let it drip dry, then transfer it over to the tupperware containing the self rising flour. I did 3-4 pieces at a time. Close the container and shake. Remove the chicken from the flour and shake it to remove excess flour.

Once you’re done you’ll have a big pile of chicken. Let it side for 5 minutes to allow the flour to set. Remember, you want to avoid putting cold chicken into the hot oil.

Once your oil is at 350, add the chicken. If you’re doing just one chicken, you can position it so everything ends up finishing around the same time. Put the thigh meat in the middle and everything else around it, with the white meat towards the edge of the pan. Skin side down.

Cook it for 10-12 minutes, then flip it. Using your meat thermometer, track the inside temperature of the chicken breast. Remove it once it reaches 165 and put it on the cookie sheet / rack (do not use paper towels!).

Serve it hot. If you’re doing a bunch all at once, you can put it in the oven at 200 for a little while until it’s ready to serve.

Wooooo okay! Here's 1-20, and I will give the bonus ones a go in just a few minutes! fear cuts deeper than swords

1.) Something that is grey. How about a knife set?!

2.) Something reminiscent of rain. Cinema Paradiso! The cover of it is two people in the rain :) (Movies wishlist)

3.) Something food related that is unusual. This Manatea infuser is unusual! (Default wishlist)

4.) Something on your list that is for someone other than yourself. Tell me who it's for and why. (Yes, pets count!) I have a pet wishlist and a wishlist for my best friend! This traveling litter box is the perfect combination--it's so I can take my kitty on trips to my best friend's place! (Kitty wishlist)

5.) A book I should read! I am an avid reader, so take your best shot and tell me why I need to read it! Why have just one book when you could have 3000?! This little usb is loaded with over 3000 classic novels. Yes, almost all of these novels are free on Project Gutenberg, but having them all in one spot ready for you to peruse is amazing. You're almost guaranteed to find a book worth reading that you haven't read yet! (Books wishlist)

6.) An item that is less than a dollar, including shipping... that is not jewelry, nail polish, and or hair related! Well, not a physical item, but I have an mp3! (Music wishlist)

7.) Something related to cats. I love cats! (keep this SFW, you know who you are...) Kitty nail caps! I have a sphynx, so I have to clip her nails roughly every week (otherwise when she scratches herself, she cuts herself up D:). Nail caps are a cute and more hassle-free way of dealing with her claws! (Kitty wishlist)

8.) Something that is not useful, but so beautiful you must have it. This one is pretty tough for me, actually--I love purposeful items! However, I already have a cheese grater, so this hedgehog shaped one isn't actually something I NEED--it's just so cool!! (Default wishlist)

9.) A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why? Life is Beautiful. It's a sweet, touching, and heartbreaking story of a Jewish father trying to keep the joy in life in a concentration camp. It's laugh-out-loud funny, and so sad you'll cry. Definitely worth watching. (Movies wishlist)

10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain. Packaged, high-cal foods will be really helpful! You have to keep your energy up while you're on the run, and you need a portable snack! These cookies are sure to give you the extra boost you need to escape the zombies. (Default wishlist)

11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals. Hmmm this is a toss-up for me. I need a laptop for life. I have a little chromebook, but when I need to update my resumes and write cover letters, I need to go to the library to use an actual computer to make sure the formatting is right. A laptop would help with the job hunt and (hopefully) help land me a job! (Expensive things wishlist) My other goal, to become healthier, would be helped by wrist weights to wear during my runs! No, it's not a huge amount of weight, but it will make my runs that much more difficult and help tone my arms! It's a small change with a big impact :) (Default wishlist)

12.) One of those pesky Add-On items. Oh gosh, take your pick. Cat snuggie (kitty wishlist), sriracha (who doesn't love hot sauce?! Under $6 wishlist), a pumice stone (Under $6 wishlist), or a kitty laser toy! (kitty wishlist)

13.) The most expensive thing on your list. Your dream item. Why? A $500 keyboard. I love playing piano, but I'm a young and flighty thing--I fully expect to be moving around a lot for the next 5-10 years, and I can neither afford an actual piano, nor can I imagine transporting one in and out of various apartments. This keyboard will give me the chance to practice and enjoy playing, but it's a much more compact and liveable way of doing so. (Expensive things wishlist)

14.) Something bigger than a bread box. A relatively cheap and yet still nice vacuum cleaner! Nice, easy to use, and practical :) (Expensive things)

15.) Something smaller than a golf ball. A storm trooper USB! Cute and practical! (Default wishlist)

16.) Something that smells wonderful. Lavender chamomile bubble bath! I don't know about you, but few things smell more relaxing to me than lavender and chamomile, so a combo bubble bath just sounds like bliss to me. (Default wishlist)

17.) A (SFW) toy. Here's a whole bag of toys! And less than $10 too! My kitty would have a field day with all those toys :) (Kitty wishlist!)

18.) Something that would be helpful for going back to school. A lunch box! I always brought my lunch to school, so every year I got a cool new lunch box for that year :) These ones are super cute, and insulated! (Default wishlist)

19.) Something related to your current obsession, whatever that may be. I've had a life-long Disney obsession! (Movies wishlist) My whole bathroom is Mickey themed (default wishlist), and I'm always looking for cool new Disney items to add to my wishlist! I seriously love Disney.

20.) Something that is just so amazing and awe-inspiring that I simply must see it. Explain why it is so grand. You too can own the Sword of Gryffindor! (Expensive things wishlist) Not only do you get to wield the weapon that destroyed three pieces of Voldemort's soul, it's also pretty practical! It's a letter opener that you can proudly display resting in the hands of a lion :) (Expensive things wishlist)

I use this calculator from the Mayo Clinic. According to that, if you are completely inactive 1600 calories a day will maintain your current weight. So if you consume, 1100 calories a day you will lose one pound per week (3500 calories per pound). You can eat a bit more and you'll simply lose weight at a slightly slower rate. Just never go above 1600 calories in a day.

Finding foods that taste good is key to success. I make a shake with the extreme milk chocolate flavor of this protein powder and soy milk. It is delicious. It literally tastes like a chocolate milkshake (as the Amazon reviews confirm), but is really good for you. Low calorie and high in protein. Another dish I make are these beans with garlic powder and other spices. Sometimes I add rice, but not too much (because rice are pure carbs). These beans are high in fiber and protein, so they are perfect. And the spices make the whole thing taste really good. The full receipe is here. The whole dish only costs $1.30 a meal and you can literally have all the ingredients shipped to your door from Amazon. Another tip is that if you drink, you can use the website Get Drunk Not Fat to make efficient choices about what you drink. :) Finally, be sure to take a multivitamin to make sure you get all the nutrients you need even though you have a calorie deficit.

Eat smart and the pounds will fly off in no time. I find the Hall of Fame to be really awesome motivation. With each pound you lose it will become easier to stay away from the bad stuff. Then once you are at your goal weight, you can start to eat more calories because then you just need to maintain. You don't have to be perfect, you just need to make smart choices overall. You can do it, I promise. :)

I'm with you there. But, you can make your own refried beans out of these beans and they taste great! Then you can make these tortillas and you could have an amazing bean burrito that's around 4 or 5 carbs. And that's if you load it up with beans.

u/Smilingaudibly · 2 pointsr/xxketo

u/Bardaichila · 2 pointsr/keto

This is mine. My non-keto SO loves it.

  • 1 lb Chorizo, uncased and chopped up
  • 1 lb Ground beef (70/30 or 80/20)
  • 2-3 Slices of bacon
  • 1 Onion, chopped
  • 1 Bell pepper (green or red), chopped
  • 2-3 jalapeños, chopped (ditch the seeds if you don't like spice)
  • 1 can [Black Soybeans] (https://www.amazon.com/Eden-Organic-Black-Beans-15-Ounce/dp/B000GZS9Q6) - drained and rinsed - low carb!
  • One can tomatoes with green chiles
  • Seasoning of choice (usually equal-ish parts of chili powder, cayenne, red pepper flakes, cumin and onion powder, with salt and pepper).
  • Cilantro (leave it out if it tastes like soap to you, weirdo)
  • Sour Cream

Cook the bacon. Remove it from the pan and cook the chorizo and ground beef in the bacon grease. Throw everything except cilantro and sour cream in a slow cooker for 8 or so hours. Top with cilantro and sour cream.

In my house we call this chili "Scott can't have this, it has pork".

Whelp, it's pretty much perfect. If you're missing Chocolate PB I'd highly suggest investing in peanut flour.

u/TheAdjunctTavore · 2 pointsr/1200isplenty

It is slightly more specialty. I order mine from amazon. It is like $14 for a large bag or $6 for a small bag and lasts for months. You can also find sugar free pbfit in many stores, but that has added monk fruit and salt and is much pricier.

The peanut flour is soooo great. I found it on Amazon, but I think it's also at vitacost (for cheaper, probably). The binder is the most interesting part actually, it's the Vitafiber syrup. It has a light sweetness and the consistency of honey. You can get it on amazon too

It saves you calories because it takes the place of oil and some of the sugar. I love this stuff.

I bought some on Amazon. This is the kind I got. I think it tastes the same as PB2, but it doesn't have any sugar in it. If you like the PB2, this unit is a lot more flour and costs more than the little jar of PB2, but it's cheaper per ounce because you're buying in bulk.

I personally like Death Wish Coffee since it gives me a kick in the ass when I'm still feeling groggy after waking up. But it has a very high caffeine content (it claims to be the strongest coffee in the world) so it's not suitable if you have a higher caffeine sensitivity, i.e. it makes you jittery.

I also haven't tried making Death Wish Coffee in a cold brew method, and I imagine that the concentrate made from it would be very potent in terms of caffeine. Beware!

Death Wish is a local coffee I tried once, and never stopped. I pretty much only drink this now. It's soooo good. It's super strong and dark. Mine is cooling off right now then I'm about to drink the entire pot.

I drank it straight black and super strong before keto, but now I add MCT oil and soluble collagen powder and it doesn't really change it.

u/ludicity · 2 pointsr/powerlifting

Well I'm vegetarian not vegan lol but here's my $0.02:

  1. I can't think of any differences in coaching men vs women honestly. Form is form and either way you just gotta get work in and practice form. The one thing perhaps is that most women will start off with worse upper body strength relative to lower body strength, and people in general can recover quite well from upper body work. So for women especially I think it's important to emphasis upper body hypertrophy.

  2. My personal favorite cue is "coil up like a spring" for the descent of squat and bench and the setup for deadlift. It makes more sense to me than "get tight". On squat and deadlift this means tightening my hamstrings until they're loaded with tension, which is how I get stretch reflex. For bench this feels like "pull the bar apart" and "bring your chest up to meet it", which also feels like tightening up my upper back and loading it with tension before popping the weight back up for the ascent.

  3. I've heard that women handle volume better than men, but I'm terrible with high rep sets and have guy friends who are way better at them. I think that "women handle volume better" is perhaps a good rule of thumb with beginners but, as always, everybody's different.

  4. check out @powerliftingdietitian @lamaliciabkln @awill_lift for just a couple vegan powerlifting women (and myself @alice_lifts if you're open to vegetarians)! Here's an article that Stephanie (@powerliftingdietitian) wrote about vegan powerlifting. As far as diet tips, a plant-based powerlifting diet is possible but does require more planning if you want to make sure you're getting enough protein. Some of my favorite vegan protein sources include tofu, black bean spaghetti, beans/lentils obv, and more veggie meat substitutes than is probably good for me. I've even made gravy from pea protein powder that is heavenly with veggie meatballs in a "swedish meatless balls" concoction. As long as you cook for yourself though it's really not too bad -- the main difficulty is when you eat out. Also, since the only whole food source of creatine is red meat and it is an essential building block for ATP, it's especially important for non-meat-eaters to supplement with creatine. Oh I also used to write a veg protein cookbook blog. Not a lot on there unfortunately (been meaning to add more) BUT you and your gf might like the sloppy joes if you're into some good ol beefy comfort food!

    Hope that helped!

> I'm a 30yo female 5'4'' 135lbs looking to replace fat with lean muscle.

The best advice would be to lift weights while eating in a caloric deficit. Tweaking your macros, without impacting your overall calories, will likely make little/no difference unless your current macros are goofy.

I just make sure I hit my protein goals (~0.6-0.8g/lb bodyweight, so 120-140g), then try to get at least 30-50g fat a day, and make up the rest in carbs, ~200-300g.

For protein, I like to get from whole foods. Beans, nuts, and seeds are my main sources. Soybeans are really high. If you still can't meet your macro goals, you might reconsider the amount of protein you're consuming, or get some processed foods. I only use protein powder for one shake a day because it's convenient, but there is also seitan/gluten, tofu, nutritional yeast (> 50% protein), soybeans, explore asia products, tempeh, TVP...

u/grckalck · 2 pointsr/diabetes_t2

Like someone else said, you need to test yourself before and after you eat to find out what foods in what amounts cause you to spike your BG level. When I am trying a new food to see if it will be OK for me to eat, I test before, one hour after, two hours after, and four hours after. If any of the readings after eating are 35-40 above the pre meal reading, I don't eat that food anymore. So once you have eliminated the foods you cannot eat, you develop a diet plan, one you can sustain for the rest of your life, around those foods you can eat. Potatoes, pasta, grains, anything made with flour, probably corn, many fruits, and of course anything with sugar is off the menu for you now.

If you have been diagnosed with T2 by a medical doctor, then you should be on Metformin. Its a great drug with decades of patient data to show that it works and has a low risk of causing other health issues. I get it from Walmart for under their $4 prescription plan. Be ready for at least a couple of weeks of tummy rumbling and frequent bathroom visits. I recommend psyllium husk capsules or metamucil to help balance this out. What Metformin does is it counteracts the resistance the cells in your body have built up to insulin, allowing the sugar in your bloodstream to be absorbed into the cells, thus lowering your blood sugar levels.

Many people feel sluggish after eating without being diabetic, so there is no way a kind internet stranger can tell you with certainty that Metformin will cure this for you. Overall I feel better taking Metformin and eating right.

I absolutely love pasta and have not yet found anything on the market that tastes as good as "real" pasta and doesn't spike my BG level. The best thing I found was this, which my local store carries, but its very expensive:

https://www.amazon.com/Explore-Asia-Organic-Black-Spaghetti/dp/B0078DU1CY

The best thing I have found is homemade noodles made from soy flour, which is quite low in carbs and high in protein, better than chickpeas. Here is the recipe I use. It is fairly labor intensive. I would roll the dough out as thin as I could and use a pizza cutter to slice noodles as thin as I could. They were still pretty thick but they worked as noodles.

https://yikesnocarbs.wordpress.com/2011/11/22/low-carb-soy-flour-pastanoodles/

One other tip that has helped me. At least browse some of the keto subs and sites and Youtube channels for recipes. Some are crap, some are ok and some are absolute genius. Its up to you if you want to jump on the keto wagon, some folks swear by for controlling T2. IMHO its worth looking at what they are selling and deciding for yourself what will work for you.

Best of luck to you!

u/Marisey · 2 pointsr/vegan

The best way to gain weight on a budget is to just eat more cheap foods. Go to the bulk foods section and load up on everything. Next in line is your high carb foods; oats, potatoes and fruits, especially if you're juicing your fruits. If you feel like you just can't eat anymore than you'll need to look at ways of increasing the caloric density of your foods. Which means eating more fatty and processed foods; nuts, seeds and avocados, fake meats and cheeses, cereals, protein bars, shots of olive oil. Don't do that last one. But these tend be a little to a lot more expensive, but you can find some really delicious and inventive foods that aren't too expensive. Like these black bean noodles! Also I'm not an athlete or anything so go check out /r/veganfitness for some advice from people that do this everyday.

I made a srirach-ish hot sauce last year with a 50/50 split of white and cider vinegar which turned out great. Secret Aardvark uses champagne vinegar and it's one of my favorites.

u/SergioSF · 2 pointsr/MealPlanYourMacros

Place 1-2lb of Ground chicken in a frying pan and stir the chicken on medium-high heat until barely pink. No added oils are needed to fry.

Drain access fat from pan. Since it's ground chicken, there will only be about 2-3 tablespoons.

Place frying pan back on stove.
Change heat to medium and move the meat over to one half side of the pan.

Crack in 3-4 eggs per 2lb of ground chicken on the other half of the pan and add salt and pepper and let sit for 2 minutes minutes. Then stir in all together. You should add in your precooked veggies at this point if you are using any.

Eat on or with slice of wheat toast. Dab on generous amount of Aardvark Secret Habanero Sauce. You can find this at supermarkets for $5-6, but paying $7.00 a bottle is a steal for how rare it can be depending on your location. https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00AIR3Q38/ref=olp_twister_child?ie=UTF8&mv_size_name=3

> What do you love the most about your new home?

Snow and Climate

I came from a tropical country, passed by the Equator, day/night cycle is always stable, there's only 2 season : dry & rainy season. Average temperature around 27-30 Celsius.

Enter UK, 4 seasons, different day/night cycle each season, and Daylight Savings Time. First winter was rough, I had to wear a quad layer clothing in order to survive the near-zero temperature outside. Now it's spring and I'm sweating on 15 degree Celsius (that's already freezing in Indonesia).

> Favourite indonesian and british dish?

Indonesian dish? Top pick :

  • Sauteed Kale (local name Kangkung, also called water spinach, swamp cabbage, or morning glory)
  • Fried Tempeh
  • Sambal Terasi (Fishcake hot sauce)

Put three of them in front of me and I'm a happy man. Total cost of that food should be around 4 Pounds for 1 servings here in UK, in Indonesia its MUCH cheaper, less than 1 Pounds for 4 servings.

As for one thats easily available worldwide, I think it's Indomie Goreng. IMO, that's the best Instant Noodle in my Country.

As for British Dish, I can't say much, haven't found any british-specific dish here. And if there's any, I doubt I can eat it since I only eat halal meat and can't consume any alcohols (you can call it inconvenient but I've lived with it since I was born, so no big deal xD)

One of my dad's specialties is the ichiban leftover soup.
Make the soup, add whatever left over cooked meat you have, shredded. Add in bok choi, broccoli, green onions, and an egg or two.
Add in a couple of splashes of Maggi seasoning for extra sodium (lol).

Yeah pretty much what everyone else has been saying. I would recommend a doctor. One thing you might be able to do is try to get her to drink Soylent. It's used a lot here to introduce a complete diet in a case where otherwise someone is eating a limited group of foods. I think it could be good for your sister because each small bottle has 400 calories. It might be useful for slowing down her weight loss due to how calorie hence each bottle is. The "original" flavor tastes like nothingness or they also have flavored versions such as chocolate. Some of those bolthouse farms drinks are really calorie dense too. It may be a way for her to "trick" her mind into feeling like she still isn't eating a lot while still ingesting a lot of calories. If it's orthorexia rather than anorexia she should be happy too because the Soylent bottles only have exactly what the body needs. Five bottles and she would be getting 2000 calories and all her micro and macronutrients. I looked at a calorie calculator and if you can get her at anything over 1,422 she should stop losing weight. 2000 calories a day would be getting her about 1 lb per week back until she starts reaching a more healthy weight. As a heads up given her measurements she has a BMI of 14.64. Anything below 16 is the lowest category which is severe thinness. That's pretty dire medically. I would force her to go to a doctor whether she likes it or not.

u/SmallAvenger · 2 pointsr/gainit

You could try adding Soylent or an equivalent nutrient drink to your diet. It's not super filling and one bottle adds another 400 calories to your diet. Drink 2 in one day along with eating and you should be able to start seeing some progress.

u/SirEDCaLot · 2 pointsr/SpaceXLounge

I doubt you're missing anything. The eBay dude probably buys the patches straight from the SpaceX store, and sells them on eBay for a nice markup.

We see the same thing in /r/soylent. Soylent is a meal in a bottle shake that sells direct from the manufacturer (or from Amazon) for about $34 per case of 12 bottles. People still resell it for $22 for 3 bottles. Note that on that second link, the product isn't sold by Amazon, it's sold by a 3rd party. The 3rd party just orders the first link, splits the 12-bottle case up into 4x 3-bottle packs, and sells the 3-packs individually, making $54 for each case they split and resell.

I have no idea why anyone would buy 3 bottles for $22 when you can buy 12 bottles for $34, but apparently some people do.

Have you looked into meal replacement drinks? I replace one meal a day with soylent for this reason. It costs about $3, fits into my diet nicely, and takes literally zero effort. There are things I could be doing that would be more healthy, but... they might cost more, be less delicious, or be less convenient. It is also nice to buy your significant other experiences rather than a physical object. Depending on how much you are looking to spend and how far in advance you are willing to plan, why not reserve tickets to a nearby con? 1. Cool
  2. I try to go out of my way to make people around me feel comfortable or feel better when they're down. I think it's because I know how it feels to be excluded or made to feel like you're not really anything. I want you to feel like you're something, to make you smile, to make you feel good about yourself. I know it's not the biggest thing anybody can do for the world, but if you feel better when we're together, I'm doing my job.
  3. It must be!
  4. My animals change my world for the better because they are always happy to see me and make me feel like I'm needed. The cats also happen to be pretty good company wherever you sit in the house.
  5. I want to work with service animals. I feel that they make people's lives better and in turn, those people make their lives better. It's a mutually beneficial relationship that is something special and I want to be a part of it.
  6. Woah, I did all of them. ;P
  7. You do have the strength and grace to be excellent to them. Being a kind, gracious host is always good practice for patience. It also reflects positively on you.
  8. Thank you. =)
  9. Ends on Easters. Looks like I made it here in time.
  10. Random's good.
  11. Eevee would be nice, but if you find more that you like, this fun candy sushi would be great, too. =)

Learn how to make aoli. There's the "mayo with other stuff mixed in" aoli, and there's "made from scratch with garlic salt acid and oil" which is a whole other beast. They're both great ways of saucing up bland foods, but they won't drip off.

Herbed butter.

If your dad likes chinese food, experiment with silken tofu (or boiled soft tofu, which gets it to almost the same consistency) with chili oils (e.g. the disappointed grandma oil, but of course possibly without the crunchy bits. That stuff goes on oatmeal etc. for people who like it, too.

Chinese cuisine also has conjee, which is a rice gruel (look it up for variations, you make it with a 1:6 ratio of water to rice, and simmer until all the rice blooms and is very diffuse), but made with again perhaps small broken up bits of tofu, ginger and garlic (which you would probably need to mash before cooking to make it swallowable) and again with the spicy sauce.

Probably key to any endeavor is to find ways to make individual flavors hit at different times. So instead of blending masses of things together, try to make it so you have a bit of an herb like finely chopped green onion on something, or finely chopped cilantro. These garnishes will go a long way to making the food enjoyable.

Oh, and thin creamy curry sauces, maybe a paneer tiki masala, but with the paneer broken up into very fine pieces. Just make sure to reduce the salt in the sauce from any recipe you find since a recipe will be seasoned to be served with rice or bread.

Stuff labeled as "peanut butter powder" such as this are generally pretty expensive. I try to look for "peanut flour" like this. They are the same thing just the flour doesn't have salt or sugar and isnt labeled as a specialty product, it's just a flour replacement. Both can be reconstituted with milk or water to make peanut butter and be added to smoothies and baked goods.

u/ArchmaesterOfPullups · 1 pointr/Fitness

High in calories? Black bean pasta usually has somewhere on the order of 180 kcal and 25g protein for a 56g serving. On its own that's a great protein-to-calorie ratio, much less after you add meat sauce to it.

u/GeZ_ · 1 pointr/OkCupid

I was in the same boat when I started, struggling to put away 2000 a day, so I have like, powerful skinny person empathy.

A part of eating more is going to come down to just doing it consistently for long enough that your stomach expands, but we can focus on the finer details in the interim.

So for your breakfast, you should try replacing cream cheese with peanutbutter or some pb alternative, since 2 tablespoons of that are going to be like ~200cal. You could probly replace the muscle milk with some sort of seeds and have the same outcome for protein, with better results for calories.

Not eating meat is a little tougher but definitely doable. This Black Bean Spaghetti isn't crazy calorie dense, but it's got 25g protein per 2oz's, which is about the best it'll get outside of protein bars/ shakes.

I have no idea how your schedule looks in a day, but you could consider restructuring as best you can to better suit a big eats kinda rhythm. Waking up earlier so you can eat breakfast earlier is super obvious but some people just don't feel up to it. Something I'm a big fan of is putting whatever my cardio training is (running/ HIIT/ etc) first thing in the morning, cause it gets it out of the way for the rest of the day, and it helps kick start your appetite for breakfast.

When it comes down to it, all this extra stuff I'm talking about is just kind of tertiary, and you'll more than likely just get a bigger appetite as time goes on, cause your stomach will expand naturally, so don't stress if you don't want to try any/ all of these.

Depends on what you consider spicy tbqh. There are many delicious sauces that are just way too hot for most people.

If you want to stick with the same general heat level as tobasco, Tapatio and Cholula are super mainstream and available everywhere.

If you want a bump up from that (a few times hotter), I can't recommend Secret Aardvark enough

My personal favorite all around sauce (Jolokia 10) is also what I consider a fairly mild sauce (about twice as hot as Aardvark), [is also my favorite sauce] (https://www.amazon.com/Jolokia-10-Hot-Sauce-ounce/dp/B0070XVW3E)

It's a puree style sauces instead of a vinegar/liquid sauce, so you get some chunk, some bite..but it's not an extract sauce like you get with some of the sauces starting at this level. Extract is a cheap way of giving more heat at the expense of taste (you get a metallic, carbon taste from the stuff)

Spicy Tuna with Ramen Noodles.
This is my go-to fast & easy recipe, & is very cheap (well under $2/serve), & uses only pantry ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • A single-serve can of tuna, ideally in oil, but any kind will work. 95gm, maybe 3-4 US oz?
  • A packet of Indomie Mi Goreng instant ramen.

    Method: Drain the tuna.
Put the noodle brick on the boil, per the directions, over cooking is fine.
Put a little oil in a pan or wok, scorch the tuna a little, add all the flavour/oil sachets, stir thoroughly, & take off the heat. Drain the noodles, add to the pan, return to heat, & stir thoroughly.

Variations: The orange sauce packet is hot chilli, & is hot by Indonesian standards, not Western standards so you may not want to use the whole packet the first time you try it. The default recipe can be a little dry. Adding a tablespoon or two of jarred crushed tomato or salsa along with the flavour packets works.

Even cleaning as you go, you're done in under 10 minutes.

u/wife-shaped-husband · 1 pointr/AskReddit

First off, the type of Ramen you get makes a difference. If all I have access to is a standard grocery store, I'll go for the chili, oriental or roast chicken flavor. But most of the time I get my ramen at the asian market where they have way more brands/flavors to chose from than Maruchan. My fav is Indomie Mi Goreng Instant Noodle which has 2 sets of flavor packets in it: one that's the seasoning powder and fried onions, the second is a 3 pack of seasoning oil, sweet soy sauce, and chili sauce.

Second, I typically keep little homemade frozen packages of chopped veggies on hand for throwing into omelets or ramen, so I'll usually add that and a soft boiled egg. Ramen is mostly a soft boiled egg delivery device for me.

IndoMie Ramen

This is an Indonesian Ramen brand and I’ve loved every flavor I’ve tried so far. They’re way better than the usual Nissin ramen. The Mi Goreng line is actually supposed to be prepared similar to chow mein, like cooking and frying the noodles in spices provided but I’ve found luck making it normally as well.

When I am trying to gain weight I use a nutrient shake called Soylent. It has 400 kcal per bottle and all an appropriate amount of all essential nutrients per calorie. I usually drink 2 bottles per day to add extra calories to my diet. However, in your situation you could add as many as you need. You can usually get 12-packs delivered with next day delivery on Amazon if you have a Prime account: https://www.amazon.com/Soylent-Replacement-Drink-Original-Bottles/dp/B01EUEIL3E

Also, they have flavored versions, but I honestly think the original flavor is the best for general use. Maybe cocoa flavored one on rare occasions. Nectar flavor is awful.

u/whatever_dad · 1 pointr/EatCheapAndHealthy

Check out [Soylent](Soylent Meal Replacement Drink, Original, 14 oz Bottles, 12 Count https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EUEIL3E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_SDgQybNFG0JZX). Its designed to completely replace food if you want or need it to. It has all the nutrients and vitamins an average person needs, with 400 calories in a bottle. Buying a 12 pack from amazon works out to less than $3 per bottle, and a 2000 calorie diet will put you at 5 bottles per day, for a grand total of less than$15 per day.

The taste is pretty bland (lots of people describe it as the milk left over after eating cheerios), but works great as a base for smoothies. Personally, I use Mio "water enhancers" to flavor it, and those work great too.

Neither Soylent nor Mio require refrigeration. But I will say that Soylent tastes a lot better cold, so maybe pour it into a glass with ice or save up for a mini fridge if using your parents' isn't an option.

u/NoCoFoCo · 1 pointr/worldnews
u/dryh2o · 1 pointr/self

I have started drinking Soylent for breakfast, one or two for lunch and then eating a healthy dinner. Soylent has everything I need nutrition-wise, is quick and easy and is portable (in pre-mixed form anyway).

As far as fruit, I have two of the small sugar free cups of fruit that come in the little plastic cups. I don't have the time or energy for fresh fruit. I add a couple drops of liquid sucralose (Splenda) and it's a great, sweet snack before bed.

u/Ounceofwhiskey · 1 pointr/4hourbodyslowcarb

Breakfast and dinner can both be fairly simple meat/veggie/beans. If you're staying at a single campsite and have coolers to store your food, anyways. Beans can be come from cans or you can pack them dry and soak them the night before somewhere at your site and cooked in a pot over the fire. Carrots, zucchini, broccoli, and other veggies can be stored and kept fresh and are easy enough to grill. The carrots and zucchini can also be used in kebabs with sweet peppers and chicken or steak.

Lunch isn't as easy in my head. An insulated lunch bag with deli meat or cold, cooked chicken and snacking veggies like carrot sticks, cucumber, etc tossed with Tajin or something similar.

Fresh Whole Rabbit

u/Wombmate · 1 pointr/movies

How about this review for Fresh Whole Rabbit at Amazon?

"Like many suburban homeowners, I like to kill and eat the wild animals that populate my backyard. To keep it sporting, I hunt naked, with my teeth and long sharpened fingernails as my only weapons. I've feasted on squirrel, raccoon, vole and numerous songbirds. But no matter how long I lay spread eagle and motionless in the hot noonday sun, I have never been able to outwit and catch any of the plump and juicy rabbits that hop just outside my reach and then bolt for the woods when I leap forward with a blood-curdling shriek. I have chased them at a dead run through the yards of the many unoccupied homes that surround mine but the pursuit always ends in frustration. But no more, thanks to Amazon. Every week, I order a fresh whole rabbit and affix it to a remote control car that is operated by one of my children. This way, I get the thrill of the hunt, and when the car's batteries are exhausted, I can leap upon it, bury my teeth into the rabbit's soft flesh and perform my ritual victory dance right there in the Walgreen's parking lot."

> I actually used some last winter as kindling for my fire because I didn't have any thing else except big logs, they burn really well lol

Oh yeah. They burn real good. Full of calories. It's one of my favorite snacks but I've had to forgo them because I am counting calories now. When I look at that meager handful of 8 chips that represents 150 kcalories, it's hard to justify eating them.

And to think I used to eat them by the bag too... shudder

> I think vanilla icecream works best.

I was going to ask but I had assumed as much. That being said, I am definitely going to try it on peppermint as well... just because I like peppermint and I am curious if it will still work.

> I really can't explain the taste of vegemite even though I've eaten it for 27 years.

"Vegemite tastes like... it just tastes like Vegemite!" is always the answer I get when I ask, which is why I need to try it. Anything that can only be described by the identity property is something I have to try. ;)

> My advice is less is more with that stuff, don't use it like you would use jam (or jelly I think you call it) if you're having it on toast.

Don't be a hero, got it. Thank you for the tip, I would've totally used too much. I was thinking "peanut butter" amounts actually. I'll be sure to dial it back when I try it.

> I'll definitely try that one of I can get my hands on it! Thanks.

You may have to order it online. It's not a super common sauce even in the US as-of-yet. Keep in mind, if you love hot sauce for the heat, this one is on the milder side (I don't know if there's cultural heat tolerance differences).

A couple other hot sauce suggestion:

Frank's Red Hot Sauce: It's been around for a while, it's commercialized, but damn if it isn't good. Medium heat but strong cayenne pepper flavor with a vinegar base. Similar to Tabasco but more flavor less heat. A requirement for US style "Buffalo Wings."

Sriracha sauce (sometimes affectionately known as "cock sauce" due to the logo, at least in my neck of the woods) is also really good. Tough to explain the flavor, actually, but it's really, really well-balanced.

If you are into hot for the heat, Dave's is what you want to try. Hurtin' Habanero is the one I recommend for a good blend of heat and flavor; it's hotter than any other suggestion I've made on here, but it has LOADS of Habanero flavor and damn that is a tasty pepper! But it's mid-scale heat on Dave's own products.

The first Dave's product I ever tried was Dave's Insanity Sauce. At the time, I thought I LOVED hot food unconditionally; I'd get extra hot food from the Thai places and I loved jalapeno chips and things like that. Well, a friend said this stuff was "actually hot" and I should try a drop of it on my tongue. It had a REALLY good flavor, wow. And it wasn't that hot. So I took another drop myself. Still tasted soooo good.

Then it hit me. My mouth started to burn. A burn like I had never experienced. And wouldn't stop. Nothing would stop it. Ice-cream, milk, salt, oil (I was desperate). Best thing I could do was fill my mouth with cold water, hold still, and then fill with more cold water. I was able to return to my normal life after about 3 hours.

It was unpleasant on the way out too.

I now know that the upper-heat levels on Dave's is more for use in a dish to add heat, just a drop or two in a soup will be noticed. Or used as a challenge/haze.

There's also slices of pork meat near the greens. The chilis are also according to preference. We would put sirracha or sambal oelek or other chili paste sauce with hoisin sauce, squeeze some lime and bean sprouts.

Edit: there's also chopped green onions, chopped cilantro, and fried chopped garlic (very tiny piece I can see near the greens).

  1. My new favourite Disney movie is Frozen. I like that it shows someone being utterly herself and shows that as a good thing. I like that it actually, openly mocks the common Disney trope of "I just met you, and this is crazy, but my name's [something], now let's have babies!" I like that it emphasizes non-romantic love as being able to be true and life-changing and truly unconditional. I like that it tells my (special ed) students that even if everyone else thinks they're cursed, even when it's terrifying to even be around other people, they can still be loved completely, for who they are.

I'd probably just omit beans and make it a meat-heavy chili like most other people are suggesting.

If your mother really wants the taste of beans for some reason, black soybeans are very low in net carbs. They might be tough to find in person though

u/monkey_feather · 1 pointr/vegetarianketo

> 0.8 grams of protein per pound of lean bodyweight should suffice

I agree, I've seen this number in plenty of places. Just wondering why multiple servings of protein powder instead of whole foods, I guess? I tend to limit my intake to one serving a day, but at the end of the day that's personal preference. Again, nuts, eggs, tofu, meat replacements are other good sources.

>Problem with beans, black soybeans or otherwise, is that they're way too high in carbs - otherwise, I would love to.

Black soy beans only have 1 gram net carb. They're great for veggie keto. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000GZS9Q6/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_HcmZxb4MVJ9T3

>Also, could you expand on why evening is a "weird place" for it?

Re: bulletproof coffee. I've been doing IF as well, I definitely get not drinking it in the morning. Usually people use bullet proof coffee as a tool to stave off hunger for a long time. It seems like a weird place to use those calories, since you'll likely be eating a large meal soon after. Why not include real food for those calories? I think that's why it feels strange. Maybe a fat bomb after dinner? Or some extra cheese with all that veg?

If you still want to do a bulletproof coffee, maybe after lunch to get you to dinner?

>I've never heard that yogurt is something to worry about and now I've heard it twice.

It IS only 7 grams of carbs, but straight from sugar. That is pretty indulgent, considering it's nearly half your carbs for the day. Also having something with that much sugar can cause more sugar cravings and more hunger, which is worse (in my experience) earlier in the day. Maybe try cottage cheese instead?

We had this stuff at a sports bar I used to work at that was called "the source" which came in a little tiny glass vial. I don't remember the exact rating but it was definitely over 6 million scovilles. It was so thick and concentrated it was a thick black paste. I'm not entirely sure it wasn't in fact the blood of Satan himself. There was six or seven different levels of heat you could order on the menu - some of them we just added more powdered cayenne or used a different base. We would dip a tooth pick in the source and swirl it into the hot sauce for the "legendary wings" and fuck, that shit was insane.

MAY I INTEREST YOU IN A 5LBS GUMMY BEAR? I've always thought it was ridiculous but also wanted to try eating it, just to see what it'll be like haha.

I'll share with you one of my favorite breakfast items: dark chocolate oatmeal! I find that most "chocolate flavored" things are too sweet, or too rich/creamy, so I make my own.

  • 1/4 oats
  • 1 cup water (or however your oatmeal box tells you to cook it)
  • 2~3 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1~2 tbsp unsweetened peanut butter (I use natural crunchy peanut butter)
  • honey, to taste
  • salt, to taste

So cook your oatmeal like you would normally, and stir in the ingredients. The trick to making it really amazingly dark chocolate is SALT. I'm telling you, dark chocolate things taste good because it has enough salt in it. The honey is just to make the dish less flat tasting, and the peanut butter gives it creaminess/body/protein but doesn't actually contribute that much flavor. The key is cocoa powder and salt. As long as you don't put too much sugar, it should be a pretty healthy start to your morning =)

Shavers...

After all of the cordless electric shavers I've used over the years, my Remington F5-5800 Foil Shaver gives me the smoothness shave I've ever had without using an actual razor. I finish off by edging up and trimming with a [Philips Norelco G370] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FED5DU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_F702AbWT46ATE) (it was <$100 and it's probably outdated by now) I've used it for ~4-7 years and dropped it a few times. It leaves the skin a bit rough, though, but I've rarely ever nicked myself with it (if at all).

Instructions & Maintenance...

Read the instructions and follow proper maintenance (brush, clean, oil, etc.). Always.
And for the record, both of my shavers are easy to clean. The Remington requires more effort, especially once a month, but the Phillips only requires a quick brushing (I add Andis Clippers Clipper Oil). The "hardest" part is letting the Remington dry for so long before putting the head back on. Don't brush the clippers while it's on, btw. Seriously, you'll ruin the brush and end up needing to replace it.

Battery Life...

If the instructions say to let the battery die before its first charge, I do so. If it says to fully charge it for X hours before its first use, I do so. Now, people of Reddit had a particular conversation about battery life once. I never looked into the matter myself, but I started practicing it with all of my chargeable devices. After the initial required drain (if instructed), I always charge it after it hits 30-50%. I do my best to never let it drain completely to 0%. The idea is that the battery will actually degrade much quicker if it drains to 0% and will need to be replaced sooner. Feel free to call me a fool on this one, but please explain your reasoning.

Razers & Magic Shave...

This one requires a story or warning.
I wet shaved with my brother's razor when I was in high school because my cordless one (probably a Phillips) wouldn't work properly when I put it back together after taking the top apart for a full-ish cleaning for the first and last time (the school started reinforcing its facial hair policy).

Though it was my first time, and I shaved against the grain, I didn't cut myself or apply anything to my skin before or after. My face was so smooth that I kept touching it. Three days later, I start noticing bumps. By the fifth day, I had full on razor bumps everywhere I originally shaved. Bump Stopper II took a month or so to really any progress and around three months to really make an impact, but it left my skin dry and very flaky. Eventually, I moved to Skin Tight Razor Bump Ointment Extra Strength. It burned like hell in the beginning, but showed better progress. That and washing my face daily with soap and a towel of course.

Since I still had to shave, I just went over the bumps with a shaver and routinely wiped the blood away. Due to a barber's suggestion, I started using Bump Fighter Razors. He warned me that they were going to miss some hairs, but it worked well enough.

At some point, I was recommended (powder blue) Magic Shave because it would "eat those bumps up" (oh, boy). This stuff stinks, flakes all over the place, and can tear up your skin if you aren't careful. I tore a descent sized section of my skin off when I dragged a wet towel down my chin at the wrong angle once. I could see the skin sitting intact in the towel with the inner-end of my hairs barely sticking out of it. Was a really weird moment. That section of my face was pink and hairless for awhile before it healed over. Looked funny on my lovely complexion. For the record, I only used it every three or four days. Three is the minimum, IIRC.

If you're going to use Magic Shave, use a wet towel to wipe it off (prepare to rinse repeatedly), designate a magic shave cup that is to be used for nothing else, consider only wearing boxers, bring a broom and dust pan, and stay in one room or outside. Hell, turn the vent on, you stinky mutt. Overall, I do not recommend Magic Shave's original formula (powder blue). I cannot speak for its powder gold fragrant or creme light fresh scent version, though.

Now for razers...
I started using the cheap pack of (dark blue) Gillette dual-blade razers from Walmart in high school. They worked very well. Here are my instructions: Shave with the grain, rinse the blades after every stroke, thoroughly rinse the blades after you're done, wipe them carefully with a toilet paper to get extra crud off, and let air dry somewhere. Hell, thanks to another Reddit conversation, I kept a short round plastic container of isopropyl alcohol around in college to "shake" the razer in as a finishing touch of cleanliness. Supposedly, the alcohol evaporates after awhile, so I just let it air dry after that (read the 4/24/18 edit at the bottom). The blades lasted a pretty long time doing all of this before I need to pull out a new razor. That combined with how cheap they were...

Razer Bumps / Ingrown Hairs...

I found that daily shaving, Skin Tight creme, and actually washing or just wiping my face with a clean damp paper towel kept the bumps from fully returning. A trick I discovered to get rid of the ones that lingered was to grow my facial hair out. It looked awful for a month since the bumps returned as the hair grew (they might have been curling into the skin), but there's a point where the bumps start to recede into the skin and all you have is a full beard (minus some areas of the lower neck). Now just maintain it or shave it off. What you'll find is a smooth face with practically no bumps. You must keep the hairs from growing back, though (and maybe wash your face?). Mess that up, and the lingering bumps will return.

Oh, to hell with Bump Stopper II and don't bother with Skin Tight. My physician recommended Tend Skin Solution after I graduated college, and, let me tell you, it works better than both. I hear the ingredients aren't that bad for your health either.

My Routine...

I wash my hair (including facial) with Bubble & Bee's hard water shampoo (the price is worth it, especially since it lasts for a surprisingly long time), pour on and rub in their vinegar rinse ratio (a fourth of the bottle tops; it's optional when you purchase the shampoo), wash that out, apply Nature's Way Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil to my facial and scalp hair while still damp/wet (I'm not 100% certain about using it on the scalp yet; used to use AVEDA Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil twice or thrice a week), brush my facial hair (soft bristles for the cheeks and neck; medium bristles for the beard and moustache) once in the morning, and apply Tend Skin Solution twice a day with cotton balls.

I should be using the foil shaver daily, but I don't always. Hence why I brush my cheeks and neck.

In closing...

If you're close to (or cool with) any Afro-American males, especially ones who've just started growing facial hair, consider having them read this so they can learn from my mistakes. Those razor bumps were rather unsightly.

tl;dr: Use Tend Skin Solution for razor bumps, wash your face, follow instructions, foil shavers leave smoother skin, read the section on battery life, don't shave against the grain with a razor, and don't use magic shave or bump stopper II.

EDIT (4/24/18):
About my shaving cleanup steps. I later realized that letting the isopropyl alcohol dry on the razer caused the blades to dull quicker, so I started rinsing them off and wiping them with toilet paper a second time as the final step.

Not very greasy since it's so light. But it can take a little while to absorb, like any oil. It doesn't cause me to break out, but that's pretty individual.

I buy whatever brand's cheapest. I've definitely bought this before. I just look for something with minimal processing (extra virgin or virgin) and no ingredients other than coconut oil.

and you aren't a pussy, you can have spoonfuls as a supplementation quick and easy. I hate grease and dairy in my coffee and that is the only reason I'm saying once your palette can handle it, it's best to have the option in the morning or whenever.

I hope you will try a kale smoothie!! They are hella nutritious. Here is my jam: buy a head of kale at the store (purple is the bomb), take it home, cut off the stems, wash it, dry it, chop it up, and put it in a big Ziploc bag. Then i stash it in the freezer, so it stays good and never goes bad or wilts. I keep an old protein powder scoop (1/4 cup) in the Ziploc, and throw 2 scoops in my morning smoothie. You can use any protein powder you like; i use Jay Robb whey or egg white powder. I also put some grass-fed unflavored gelatin because a lot of the keto/paleo sites recommended it. I also add a few (about 1/8 cup) of frozen blueberries to help the flavor.

Make sure you leave enough space in the jar for it to blend properly. My Ninja individual jar has a "max fill" line which is helpful. blend the shit out of it or else you'll get the "liquid salad" effect. I will add some Kerrygold butter, or olive oil, or coconut oil to the shake if I need more fat that day.

I used a Magic Bullet blender for a long time, then I upgraded to a Ninja, which is what I use now. Someday i want to get a Blendtec or a Vitamixer, but I don't have six hundo to throw down on a fucking blender.

I buy the Nature's Way brand of coconut oil, to me it tastes pretty coconutty. I tried to get my dad to eat some, because MCTs help with memory in addition to all the other amazing things they do, but the stubborn old man won't eat it because he is convinced it will make him fat. That shit is like catnip to me, I love it. I love all the other great "fat bomb" recipes folks post on here. Good luck!!

I did co-wash for about 6 months using Tresemme Naturals, but it just didn't do great things for my hair, it was dull and dry and kind of sad. I went back to using regular shampoo and conditioner, I use Fructis Triple Nutrition and I love it.

Here is the protein mask, available at Sallys.

Here is an example of coconut oil, brand doesn't matter, as long as it's virgin, cold pressed oil. You can find it at the grocery store in with oils, it's solid and white at room temp, but melts in your hands, it's also completely edible. A hair product with coconut oil in it is NOT a good substitute! Apply 3" away from roots, conditioner by itself gets it out just fine.

Variable results, I've spoken to some people who've had first hand results that bio-oil has helped them clear out their stretch marks years later in a matter of months of persistent application. While at the same time it has not helped others, or perhaps they were not as persistent with it.

I've battled with stretch marks myself during a rapid weight gain period during school ~40 lb, but I didn't use Bio-Oil. I did use Virgin Coconut oil several years after the fact. I've since lost the weight, but the stretch marks were quite severe at the time. The marks are hardly noticeable now though, but I didn't really see results until at least half a year of applying coconut oil regularly.

You'll find a lot of anecdotal stories of it working/not working. However, the way I see it, regardless of whether or not the stretch marks disappear, it's quite healthy to keep your skin moisturized anyway. Applying the oil to your other body parts, will also be moisturizing your hands which suffer insults from day to day activities whether it be push ups on the ground or washing dishes.

Best thing that happened to me today was just the day itself. I know how cheesy that sounds, but I went from unemployed for a year, to working a job that pays the bills. Today marks the end of my work week, which this week happened to be 42 hours.

If things keep going as they are, that means I'll be out of the hole in 2 months time. I'm exhausted and my feet are killing me after every shift, but in the end I just have to remember how worth it, it all is in the end.

A goodie would be nice, but not necessary. This is something I've always wanted to try but haven't had the chance to get one.

These are my favorite ramen noodles. Perhaps not the healthiest, but they're delicious

no, I mean Peanut butter is NOT plant based, hence the word (butter) it's processed, but you can buy PB2 or peanut flour which has 95% of the fat taken out, it's much better for ya.https://www.amazon.ca/Protein-Plus-Roasted-Natural-Peanut/dp/B0052OOYOW?pf_rd_p=ade63561-ce66-434d-8f8d-09bbdf7a0c11&pd_rd_wg=P16S2&pf_rd_r=EATJHWYCE7XX54V10P9R&ref_=pd_gw_cr_wsim&pd_rd_w=ktw0O&pd_rd_r=f1609769-bdb0-4cfa-acf2-9471e5d87953
