+1 on that.

Right now on Amazon you can get lockable plastic ammo boxes for as little as $5 (if you buy other items so total order is $25), or a slightly larger one for $14

Or you could look for an used Army Surplus model made of steel at a place like sportsmansguide.com for $10-$15 plus shipping.

Then get a lock for it.

u/instanteggrolls · 34 pointsr/CCW

Like you, I'm not going to break any lawful no-carry laws. I blow past "No guns allowed" signs all the time because in TX we are not obligated to abide those postings unless they fit the designated signage laws. But when it actually matters (like going into a school or post office), I want to lock it up in the car.

I use a small safe with a cable that is attached to anchor points under the driver seat of my vehicles. Yeah, it's not going to stop any would-be thieves with a set of bolt cutters. But it will keep your standard smash-n-grab type criminals from getting it. And at the end of the day, if my gun ever does get stolen, I at least want to be able to tell the police that my gun was securely locked in a safe and not just rattling around in my glove box.

Obviously you could go the more hardcore route and have a more expensive safe installed in your console or bolted securely somewhere else. But for my usage, that'd be overkill.

Edit: I think these are the ones I have.

So this is a Smith and Wesson Model 27, made in 1960 (per the serial number), .357 Magnum (also .38 special). I received it as a gift and it is my first gun ever! Super stoked to own it now, and I'll probably join the prolonged slide of gun ownership that I see in this sub time to time. My next purchase is likely a smaller concealed carry weapon.

The giant ammo tin is vintage, I'm guessing vietnam era, but no idea, I could be full of shit. It's stacked with hundreds of .357 FMJs. 1 box of .357 hollow points, and 2 boxes of Shotshell snake charmers.

I'm pleased as punch with this gun. I've just purchased a bunch of accessories on amazon, I'll post them below, maybe you can tell me if these are good products or not for range shooting. (No referral links or any of that bs)

This is astoundingly bad advice. I'm disappointed it's in the positives.

Fine motor control goes to shit in a life or death situation. Add in darkness, and you've compounded the situation dramatically.

In a home without kids, unlocked and ready to go is how you want your home defense weapon stored, and it should be close to you, not anywhere else in the house where it's more likely to be used against you. In a home with kids, you should be using something that can be unlocked as fast as possible, like a biometric safe that requires no coordination or eyesight to unlock.

While Indiana is fairly permissive regarding where you can legally carry a gun, there are still some locations where carrying is prohibited. Therefore, you have to ditch your gun in the car. There are, coincidentally, products designed specifically for this.

In general, keeping guns in the car is not the best idea unless they are locked in a compartment that is secured to the vehicle body. People get lazy and leave them in glove boxes and center consoles where an opportunistic person doing a quick raid on an unattended and unlocked car can easily find them. Back when I was an auto tech, there were a few occasions where I found loaded guns in cars that the customer did NOT think to warn me about. At the very least, if you do keep a firearm in the car, it is imperative to keep the car locked.

The "truck gun" concept is widely derided in the gun community for exactly this reason. Don't keep anything in the car that you spent real money on. But some people subscribe to the cult of "quick access" and freak out if they don't have a pistol at instantaneous arm's reach at all times. These are the people whose toddlers grab loaded guns out of unlocked drawers and glove boxes. Incidentally, in Indiana if a child gets ahold of an improperly stored handgun, you can be held legally responsible for what happens. The same is not true of regular theft.

If I lived further out in the country, I'd be all about keeping a long gun in the car. Which, coincidentally, they also make secure storage for. Control access to your firearms, people. It's really not that hard. Do you really want to see your tricked out Glock on the evening news because you didn't want to spend a couple bucks on a lockbox? No.

TL;DR: It's because people are stupid and careless.

A firearm with a cable lock through it is not readily available.

Personally, I stage my AR empty chamber, bolt forward, safety on. One yank on the charging handle and I’m ready to rock. But then again, I have no children in the house and all who live here are trained in the use of the gun.

If you want to lock and have it readily available perhaps something like a ShotLock AR Vault is up your alley.

u/Trollygag · 9 pointsr/guns

He doesn't need 3 loaded handguns for home defense.

Hornady makes a pretty good automagic safe which will pop open with an RFID card on his keychain, wallet, or on a bracelet. Or he can mash a couple fingers and it pops open.

Put it on the night stand with ONE loaded gun inside for when kids are over, put the other guns in a larger safe or somewhere inaccessible.

I have a 15 month old who likes getting into stuff, and that is how I keep him out of my carry guns.

My shotgun stays in a high place.

My other tens of thousands of dollars in guns stay in a real safe in the bottom of a lake.

u/mdinR · 8 pointsr/guns

Shopping for one now actually, was thinking about this one.

I'm also trying to decide how to best preserve the box. Would plastic tupperware be good or should I include a dehumidifier or something?

u/AnEvenHuskierCat · 8 pointsr/CCW

You can get a solid mechanical safe that can be bolted directly to the wall for about $120. There is more than enough room inside for any of the firearms being recommended here and it is a simple 4 button combination to open so it can be quickly accessed in an emergency while still being safe enough to prevent unwanted tampering.

u/Ruhlmdc · 8 pointsr/guns

I haven't seen one that does, usually the ammo just comes loose in the brown paper packs of 20

EDIT: Correction, some polish ammo comes in stripper clips. You're better off buying Russian/Romanian surplus ammo and buying the clips on the side, I've been using these pretty well.

u/MrPoundabeer · 8 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Would a shooters bag work for you? It is typically used for skeet/trap shooting, but I think you could fit about 10 beers in there. They're meant to carry a decent amount of weight (50 shells at least). I would use a cold pack though, it's not waterproof, so ice would be messy.

Gives a whole new meaning to "shotgunning beer"!

u/Mini-Marine · 8 pointsr/pdxgunnuts

Clackamas Country Sheriffs range has good training available.

For just going out and shooting, North Fork Wolf Creek Road out past Timber on Hwy 26 is a good spot.

Getting a membership at Tri County is worth it if you actually shoot on a regular basis.

As far as storage, if it's just the one gun, There's an Amazon Basics safe that's surprisingly good and if you wait to catch it on sale you can get it for around $35

I have a bunch of these ammo boxes. They aren't sized for any known box of ammo that I have found, which makes getting the most out of your storage space, but they're cheap and easy to come by. Empty your loose brick into a couple zip-lock bags and pile them in the plastic box.

I have this one and love it. You could put one flat piece of bubble wrap on the top of all the imps once they are in there, to provide a barrier between the tops of them and the top of the ammo case.

My dad was a cop too when he did the exact same thing with me.
But when I was a kid I found the gun and played with it. Got caught before the eventual tragedy. But still.

You can argue that I was an idiot child. And I would have to agree with you on more than just this account. But my point is that training your kids about guns isn't a surefire safety measure. You need to train your kids, and then make damn fucking sure that the kid NEVER gets a hold of that gun unsupervised, period.

One thing they have now that they didn't have when I was a kid: Fingerprint Safes. When we have kids, the sport guns either go in a large formal safe, and the home protection guns go in these.

u/IceCreamforLunch · 6 pointsr/CCW

I like codes/combinations and not keys/rfid/biometrics because I want it to work every time and I don't want there to be a key somewhere for someone to find. I have the Hornady Rapid Safe and I really like it:

There's another version that just has the spring-assisted lid and not the built-in "holster" if you would rather it not present the gun.

I got this.

I've been to Argentina for high volume wing shooting twice: once up in the northern jungle region, near Salta, and once down south a couple hours away from Bajia Blanca.

I have some questions and related advice. Please answer some of my questions, and I'll check back later and give you more specific advice.

First, who is your outfitter? I went both times with Sierra Outfitters. They're great guys, and they have some fantastic spots.

Where are you going exactly? Up North, or down South?

bring a few thousand dollars in $20s and $100s Cash is king in Argentina, and US dollars are worth A LOT of Argentinian pesos. Try to figure out your budget for all of your expenses, and bring that + half in US dollars.

Are you bringing your own guns? Just don't. If you do, you will need the cash to bribe their version of TSA to get your paperwork signed off. $100 for the head chimp usually gets things moving smoothly.

Your flight and travel time will take longer than you can prepare for.

Tip your bird boys! They work hard, and get shit pay. It's also common courtesy to tip your bird boy. $100 to a birdboy is a months wage. Give him $100.

Bring ear pro, and a big pack of foam ear plugs as back-up. You will be shooting thousands of rounds a day. It is absolutely critical that you protect your ears.

Bring light-weight work gloves (mechanix) or a pack of accountant thimbles. If you are shooting thousands of rounds a day, you will also be reloading thousands of rounds. Protect your reloading thumb from getting raw and sore with a single rubber thimble, or wear gloves.

Bring a shell bag

Bring light-weight long sleeve shirts and long pants. They have mosquitos and nosee'm's (biting flies). Depending on where you will be, you should prepare for getting bit.

u/Jamdawg · 6 pointsr/CCW

In a quicksafe next to my bed. It cannot be opened without either a key, a combination, or from my RFID bracelet I wear. It allows me the ability to keep the gun safe from the kids in the house, but also a quick way to access the gun in case of trouble.

u/Unknown_Pleasures · 6 pointsr/gundeals

Check the FPS on the ammo, there are not a ton of options of 124gr at this high fps. PPU is not as consistent, I've had FTF issues with the Aguila, Blazer is a joke with fps, Armscor is all underpowered, and what is stated on the ZVS box is very different than in tests. I have heard that Magtech is re-branded S&B but I have no proof.

If you want the lowest cost you aren't going to be looking at 124gr ammo and if you are looking at 124gr ammo I personally believe you should be looking to get the best performance in fps out that weight.

Edit:

Plus the box size is smaller than standard and these Plano Boxes perfectly fit 1k rounds of it each.

u/Harry-Balsagna · 6 pointsr/CCW

Amazon price tracker confirms your observation that they were $60, now half price, average price over the product's history is $46.

I think these types of safes are effective if they are also decently hidden, as they can be defeated often within seconds (as I just did mine recently when the battery died and I couldn't find the key and found a youtube video that showed how to open it almost instantly), but can keep honest people honest and grubby kids hands off them if found.

50 cal ammo can + drop in divider trays.

basically indestructible, and when sealed properly they are water and air tight, so they float (when closed). i have a pile of them, assorted sizes (50 cal, fat 50 cal (SAW), 30 cal, 81mm artillery shell cans, etc. i have ordered the linked set from that supplier, and they were in perfect condition. i use them for toolboxes, but should work for a tackle box too.

Anything that small and inexpensive isn't going to be super secure but it'll save you from a quick smash and grab and I don't often need to leave mine locked in the car and if I do it's during the day and not for very long.

I bought this a few weeks ago.

This is the 2-pack version which is pretty awesome since both boxes use the same key (you get 2 keys per box, 4 total).

The box is pretty damn solid and works perfectly for what I need it for (same as you.. to keep in the car).

u/s0nspark · 4 pointsr/Glocks

If you are going to leave a gun in your car, unattended, it should be locked in a gun safe, totally out of sight.

You can get a decent pistol safe that you can secure in the trunk or, perhaps, under a seat for $30-50.

The Hornady one is particularly solid.

u/ReadBeens · 3 pointsr/CCW

I know this is different, but the gun safe I want is this one. It uses RFID bracelet, and you simply press one button to open it. It solves the problem that everyone has saying they dont use a safe because it takes too long to open.

Here is what I have done after not shooting clays for a LONG time:

  • Buy expensive over / under shotgun
  • Get out-shot by old guy with crappy semi-auto (I don't have anything against semi's but this thing was BEAT) and son with your own Ithaca pump
  • Hang head in shame...

    But seriously:

  • Familiarize yourself with any equipment, microphones, control box, trap house, etc. Ask lots of questions! Help with setup and take-down
  • Buy a shell pouch like this one
  • Put your full box of shells in the inside pouch after ripping the "lid" off
  • When you are shooting take shells off one row at a time, easy to keep track of when you have shot 5 shots and should prepare to move to next station
  • Load one shell at a time into open barrel / magazine / chamber
  • Do not load the weapon until it is your turn to shoot (with a pump don't rack slide until your turn, o/u / semi don't close until your turn)
  • Be very familiar with loading and shooting one round at a time from your gun and unloading if need be
  • Try to keep pace with previous shooter, don't spend two minutes fumbling around for the next shell
  • Take your turn starting in the #1 spot - see counting above - you will lead the move
  • If NOT using a semi and you miss more than you hit put your hit clay "emptys" in your pocket to keep score, if you hit more than you miss put your missed clay "empties" in your pocket to keep score put whatever ones you aren't keeping in the outside of your pouch
  • When making the move from #5 to #1 walk BEHIND the other shooters
  • Keep your gun pointed at the ground or towards trap house at all times - having your shit together with the shells helps with this
  • If you leave emptys laying around be sure to clean up after yourself
  • When done shooting for the session, reload the clay thrower! Always leave it fully loaded and everyone is happy

    Advice for the kids:

  • 4 rules above all else
  • Emphasizing that this is a team sport, and that everyone needs to know how the flow is going to go and to figure out their personal "mechanics" for making ready, loading, shooting, un-loading, etc while always keeping the gun pointed in a safe direction
  • As far as the shooting itself, I don't feel qualified to offer more than this:
  • Keep both eyes open
  • Have a fairly aggressive stance - no leaning back
  • Make sure they are holding the shotgun firmly against their shoulder
  • Follow the clay, don't aim at it
  • Don't tense up / jar themselves by yelling "PULL!" a slower / softer "Puullll" is better but sometimes doesn't work with the auto throwers
  • Consistent cheek weld! Same "picture" of the barrel / bead is important
  • If they hit clays and then have a string of misses they are probably starting to dissect and analyze - similar to golf - this appears to be my downfall at the moment
  • Watch out for flinching, run some drills where you load an empty into the gun without them knowing
  • Teach them the joy of cleaning their guns!
  • Be smooth, shoot fast!

    Edit: Added some stuff

We all know interspecies romance is weird.

Okay, I've got one. How about an ammo box?

I actually feel pretty gross about having it on my makeup wishlist. However, someone posted the idea of having one to keep your tiny perfume vial samples in, and, well... that's pretty clever.

Also, this tea just because it's freaking wonderful.

u/trvekvltlaw · 3 pointsr/VanLife

FWIW, they do make small safes that can be attached by a steel cable to the frame of your vehicle. I wouldn't expect it to stop a prepared and determined thief, but it'll deter the overwhelming majority of smash and grabs. Not perfect but better than nothing for someone that really feels like they need a gun. They also make a shotgun version that locks just around the trigger/action of the shotgun.

u/yoda133113 · 3 pointsr/moderatepolitics

> So the problem continues.

No, we make laws to fix the problem, rather than harass victims. Going after crime victims isn't fixing problems, but is instead making yourself feel better because you did something. Maybe we should do things to deal with the crime itself and not focus on the tool.

> Not sure if you’ve seen a gun safe, but those suckers aren’t easy to break in.

I've seen hundreds of gun safes. Many are cheap shit that are either easy to break into, or easy to simply steal and break in later. Do you think the poor are going to have the nice ones that "aren't easy to break in" or the shitty ones that are easy to get into. Here's one that Amazon is selling. I'd like you to note that even in the product images, it's just sitting on a cheap wooden shelf. Even if it's bolted onto that shelf, it's easily stolen. Then a criminal can take their time to open it at home.

Gun safes, absent large and expensive ones or ones very securely mounted (to concrete or thick metal), are mostly a safety device to keep kids out, not a significant theft prevention device. The criminal already overcame the lock on your door. The bolts into your wooden desk aren't going to be too much to overcome for them.

> with a statistic like 79% of guns used in crime being stolen or given to the perp, it seems like a starter.

Well, let's find a source. Here's a PBS article on this subject, and I'll quote from them:

> "Stolen guns account for only about 10% to 15% of guns used in crimes," Wachtel said.

The article keeps going to explain that the black market is where illegal guns come from, with the majority being sourced legally in the first place. (Edit: And another source on this: "Among prisoners serving time for a crime during which they possessed a gun, about half got their weapons either on the underground market (43 percent) or through theft (6 percent).")

I'll also note that you combined "stolen" and "given" as if we were talking about both of these, why is that?

> I’m far from anti-poor, but if you want a gun, that comes at a price.

Let me rephrase this to what it sounds like to me. "I'm far from anti-poor, but if you're one of the people that are most likely to need self-defense, I'm going to make it impossible for you!" That's how that reads. It sure seems like you supporting the poor with this kind of thing.

> A well-regulated militia of one requires training, which requires money.

One, everyone is part of the militia (this is the current law, though you can say that it's limited to those able-bodied from 17-45), and this doesn't require training. Two, training doesn't require a lot of money. Simply because you want to toss out buzzwords and define them as you wish doesn't change the law.

> To say that just anyone can have a gun without security or training seems against the second amendment.

Well, that's your opinion. It's never been interpreted that way by a court system, but it is still your opinion. Further, until this sentence, we weren't really talking about "without security" and we weren't talking about training. We were talking about safes and stolen guns. Why are you changing the subject?

> Let’s say there’s a government program that if you are part of militia it would put grants to help purchase training and security safes, would that be another step towards helping the poor defend their home but not add to the problem of their guns being used in crime?

If you want a program that lets anyone (because we shouldn't be discriminatory) get a grant for training (I personally think that this should be part of primary education in high school) and safes, then sure, let's do it.

But I'll note that you haven't fixed the problem of stolen guns at all, as gun safes are fairly small and easy to steal most of the time. Of course, as the article above says, this isn't the problem with guns. It's just an easy justification to invade gun rights.

u/krystar78 · 3 pointsr/CCW

If you're securing against smash and grab, you could get away with cable tied.

If youre securing against non professional thief or building security or anyone with basic tools, stay away from cable tied.

Bulldog mounted with nut and bolt with a replacement abloy lock cylinder would be quite formidable, as far as car lockboxes can be.

u/MuddyWaterTeamster · 3 pointsr/CCW

Nb4: "Don't go anywhere that you can't carry!"

By the way, I like bulldog safes better than gunvault. I usually have tools in my vehicle somewhere and I've seen people on youtube break into their sentry safe with a flathead and about 2 minutes. The bulldogs are locked into a mounting bracket (whether you choose to mount it or not) that wraps around the safe, so you turn the key and the safe is released from the case, turn the key again and the safe opens. At the same price as the gunvault, the only thing it costs you is a slight amount of convenience. For me, my $600 gun is worth an extra flick of the wrist. It isn't impenetrable, but it greatly increases the difficulty of breaking in.

IF there's enough room under your seat, this is a pretty good budget option. It jusssst barely squeaks under the seat of my SUV and can easily hold two sub/compact pistols, IN their holsters, even... and maybe a couple of extra mags. It's big.

They make smaller sizes, too.

I use a book meant to hold trading cards to hold my eyeshadow sample bags and an ammo box to hold my 1 mL perfume samples. They keep my samples organized and really easy to access. I organized the book by color and the perfumes by brand and the order they're in in my spreadsheet. I can link them in a little bit, I'm on mobile right now

here's the book and the box. I got the box for $4, no idea why it jumped up so high, there's many other boxes the same size you can find but basically you're looking for 38/357 cal because that's the perfect size for 1 mL samples. there's also larger boxes that'll fit 2 mL sample vials. here's my book. First page has the ones I use the most (dog days, smudge, atlas, figment), then taupes, lighter base colors, highlights, gold, orange, blue, green, pink, pink/purple, purple, brown/black, with all colors in order from light -> dark.

u/HisNameWasSethGreen · 3 pointsr/ar15

I would say a good first step in preparing for SHTF is being able to keep all your mags full at all times. Keeping one of these full of loaded PMAGs gives you 450 rounds that are ready to go and easily portable. They make similar ones for pistol mags too.

As others have said, .22LR is a great choice for stockpiling too since it's cheap and light. I don't keep any .22 mags loaded up just because given my options it would be more of a long term choice vs the first guns I'd grab.

Here's a great spreadsheet for tracking your stockpile.

Photo for sizing comparison.

I can't include every vendor's name, there are just too many so hopefully that sizing photo will help you. I haven't included Sixteen92's 2ml sample in a case because I just put mine in the side of the Plano 12 or 16 Gauge box.

BPAL's imps are also 1ml. BPAL full size fits, tight into a 10-12 gauge ammo case.

I'd recommend a Bushnell TRS25. Yeah it's a bit more expensive but it's miles ahead of any 'airsoft red dot'

You only need eye protection. I'd recommend face protection as well. You don't need a vest unless you need to carry stuff.

Edit: Looks like the X9 comes with a mid cap, not a hi-cap. You'll probably want a couple extra mags and something to carry them. Could get something like a Condor belt and SMG pouches

Bulldog's have the cable option, or the bracket. Here is an example of what i'm talking about:

https://www.amazon.com/Bulldog-Cases-Mounting-Bracket-Cable/dp/B004MC53G8

I have a couple of those, in two different sizes. When properly inserted into the bracket, you can not remove it without either spending a lot of time cutting the bracket, or with the key, as the lock actually has a part that secures it to the bracket.

I'm ready for this question! I have a whole bookmark tab because I'm planning on building a vanity and redoing all of my storage. I'll give you a sneak peak into it (; Let me know if you want more! I have a bit more than a dozen of these things saved.

First up, acrylic drawer organizers!. Much cheaper than most other competition I've seen. I use these to house blush and bronzer and whatnot. If you guys can find a flaw in the first one I linked please let me know since that is what I'm planning on buying!

For samples, lots of people go for ammo boxes but I'm thinking of buying test tube racks/cases such as this or this. There's also a stainless steel options of the later version that look really pretty but are much more expensive and since these will be in drawers...I don't care quite that much.

If you do go for ammo boxes, however, this particular box has been mentioned several times in the past. It won't fit the longer or short and fat samples, but it'll do fine for most others. I don't care for it because of the color options, to be quite honest about it. It's a superficial thing and if you don't care I've seen many great reviews of this box.

For full-sized bottles, I've seen people use cake stands and pretty trays but since perfumes are light sensitive I plan on hanging a spice rack like this one inside a cabinet. Really you can hang it anywhere as long as it's out of light and humidity (so not in your bathroom!).

u/bluevillain · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Had one of these when we went camping. The thing took a beating, never leaked, and it had more room in it than we knew what to do with it.

If you're looking for a more family friendly version, this will probably do just fine as well.

Medics bag, $8usd. Very tough for pointy objects like broken glass, metal, old knives, etc.

I was also looking at shotshell pouches, which often have 2 compartments and are sturdy canvas. About $20.

I've been eyeballing this one for a while. Seems like all the bad reviews are from tards who did it wrong or didn't read that the battery needs replaced every couple of years. I had this and gave it away because I didn't care for it. It would unlock properly maybe 3 of every 10 tries. Fuck that thing. Gunvaults suck IME.

Right now I've just got my carry 9mm on the kitchen counter and my home defense .45 on my nightstand which is nowhere near ideal.

You should buy it first and let me know so I don't waste my cash ;)

Yes, yes you should. It's good that they're in a safe since you've said you've got kids. You could perhaps look into one of the bedside safes that use biometrics for easier access, like a SpeedVault or a Hornady RapidSafe.

There's another one I can't find at the moment, but it mounts to any vertical surface, and pops the handgun up with the grip facing your hand, ready-to-grab.

> Link to your cheap option?

There's any number of manufactures that make ones like this https://www.amazon.com/SnapSafe-75211-Portable-Measures-Approved/dp/B00TSQP8ZE/

You're not forcing one open with just your hands, there's no way to grip it good to wrench it open.

  • First someone has to find it under your car seat

  • Then when they slide it out you don't have a ton of length on the cable, they might get the whole thing out from underneat the seat plus a few inches

  • They then need a pry bar or some other lever, or something to cut the cable with

All of this is going to take far longer than people spend on car smash and grabs, in broad daylight, in a church parking lot.

I keep one of these in my master bath to the plumbing and I've had one in my past 3 vehicles and have zero hesitation storing a weapon system in one when I have to go into somewhere where it is illegal to carry.

Yeah if someone has tools and is sufficiently motivated, they'll get into it just like with everything. In the typical 10-30 second smash and grab, no flippin' way.

This is the lock box I bought myself. A cable can be cut pretty easily. This box has a cable AND a cage that you can bolt down to the car under your seat, and if you slide the box in with the lip facing down, there's no way to pry it open.

I wouldn't get someone a holster unless I knew what holster they wanted because it's a personal preference. I asked my brother if he wanted my old holster a few days ago and he declined and said he'd "never really carry like that".

u/possible-troll · 2 pointsr/guns

Modified w/ 7.5 is perfect until you get a few rounds under your belt. Keep track of your performance -- and after 6-7 times out, you can try #8 shot, or a different choke. This way you can see if it is helping or hurting you.

You can try your hunting vest if it has large front pockets, but the problem with most vests is to me, they hold shells too high, and it can become clumsy especially when you pump (Since you have a 500). Granted, depending on how the tourney is set up, if you only need 4-5 shells on you at any one time, it could be more than fine. If you need to carry 20+ shells, I recommend a shooters bag like this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Allen-Company-Double-Compartment-Shooters/dp/B000VEA74O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1341239017&sr=8-1&keywords=shotgun+shell+bag

The absolute best solution I have found is--I kid you not--bullet holders, like this one. A vial fits in it PERFECTLY and you can fit a ton in there. I even have an Excel spreadsheet keeping track of what is placed where in mine, color coded for what I've tried, what I want to get full sizes of, and what blends are rare... but I also have a bit of an organizing addiction.

One thing that is worth considering for your husband is to carry a firearm while in the house. A comfortable OWB holster and a good belt places the loaded firearm in his direct control at all times. The other guns can then go into the safe.

If he's not inclined to do that for comfort reasons or just not wanting to carry in the house, there are numerous "quick access" vaults that can keep curious hands away without necessarily adding too much time for accessing the weapon. I would go for a mechanically actuated vault vs those electronic ones with buttons or fingerprint scanners. You don't want to be fumbling with electronics and sweaty fingers when time is of the essence.

Depending on the level of "readiness" that your husband wants to achieve, storing the firearms with loaded magazines but closed bolts/slides on empty chambers can add another layer of security/complexity towards discharging the firearms. Some may view it as a hindrance or something to forget in times of stress or injury, but it's worth considering all the options.

It's worth discussing with your husband the level of readiness he desires along with the element of risk that you both are willing to accept. Currently, it's pretty much grab-and-go from the closet. Does he move a gun closer to the bed when sleeping? If someone's trying to break in when everyone's around, is it a "honey go grab the gun" sort of situation? You already mentioned having to lock the bedroom door when family/friends are around. How does he feel about security when no one is home? While you live in a low crime neighborhood, most crimes happen during the day when most people are away. Also consider investing in upgraded/reinforced door frames, deadbolts, sliding doors, and windows. Those are elements that can buy you precious time in the hypothetical home intrusion to access the guns however they are stored.

Most importantly, make sure that you and your husband have a plan for such incidents. Make sure you know how to communicate with each other and have a plan for who goes where, does what, calls 911, etc. Might be worth stocking some basic first aid such as tourniquets and gauze as well.

Here are some mechanically actuated safes that seem to be relatively well-received:

Hornady's Rapid Safe pops opens by waving a bracelet embedded with an RFID over a sensor. Note: I do not own this safe, so I can't vouch for it.

PROS: it takes less fine motor skills to wave a bracelet over a sensor than it does to punch a keypad.

Hello!

I recently purchased a Glock 19 Gen 4 - I paid $529.00 out the door with 3 15 round mags. If you are in North Texas, stop by SportingArms.com - I bought from them and they are a great little mom and pop shop in Lewisville. Anyway, on to your questions.

  1. I have the Glock 19 Gen 4, I have about 2000 rounds through it now (updated extractor and 043 spring installed). I have had NO issues with it at all. Even with crap Brown Bear ammo I bought. The only issue I've had is that some times the lower grain cheapo target practice ammo (115 gr) didn't kick the slide back far enough to lock the slide back after the mag was empty. But as of lately, it appears as though the spring as loosened up a bit, and now it locks back as it should.

2.) Don't buy a GunVault safe. They apparently fail to open some times, not something you want happening when it really counts. Also, apparently if you pick it up and drop it hard, it can open! I bought a Barska Biometric safe Link to Amazon Page I have had no issues with it, it's quiet and fast.

3.) Cleaning is easy. Hops #9 Kit , 9mm Bore Snake, and a clean DRY toothbrush.

As for ammo, I've put cheap brown bear, winchester white box, and federal champion ammo through it without problems. Personally I like the winchester whitebox, it's reasonably cheap and clean, and can be purchased at your local walmart for about $22.00 a box (100 rounds)

A simple Amazon Basics pistol box will run you about $60. Its what I use. I like it.

My nightstand box is a Vaultek. The Vaultek is better buts its also about $150 or maybe 115 for a refurb.

the vaultek

Bottom line: The vaultek is better but the Amazon is adequate.

Vaultek Pros:

Nicer fit and finish.

Better feeling buttons.

Slightly sturdier feel.

Buttons light up when you run your hand over them so its easy to see in the dark.

The corner hinge has a pass through hole to support a thick anchor cable.

Interior light.

Amazon Pros:

Half the price.

Basically, I chose the vaultek for the nightstand as something that looks good enough to actually have out on the nightstand where I have to see it daily (actually bolted in place). Also something I can depend on quickly, quietly rolling over and opening in the middle of the night.

The Amazon however, is just going to live in the trunk of my car, and its rare that I’d need to get into it that quickly. (Like you, I just need a safe legal way to store my ccw when my job or location requires me to de-gun).

Bottom line, in the trunk of the car, the amazons boxier look and slightly cheaper mushier feeling buttons don’t bother me for a truck safe.

Both good options, no reason to pay double for the nicer box if you never have to see it.

Assuming you plan to bolt it in, both boxes come with mounting holes.

Both will be adequate size. The vaultek (snugly) has room for my HK VP with WML and 3 spare mags.

The Amazon is even roomier a bit I THINK. It fits my ccw in the holster, spare mag in a carrier, and there’s plenty of room to spare.

I use these ammo crates to store all of my ammo at home, they stack pretty well and come in a few different sizes to fit how you wanna organize it:

Then when I go to the range ammo just goes in my bag.

If you're worried about scratching your guns while moving them around, use gun socks. I store all of my guns in em to keep them from getting scratched up in the safe or while being moved around.

> I don't see why we couldn't direct that superfluous military funding to something like reliable smart guns, which would be extremely beneficial to the military and civilians.

This is debatable and it all depends on how we want our tax dollars being used. Granted that normal guns are not banned, then I'm pretty much okay with the idea since it promotes gun ownership and safety. I disagree about it helping the military for a few different reasons, but do agree that it would be a good civilian product.

> Also, you talk about how speed and reliability are the main reasons that smart guns just won't work, but then you say that keeping a Glock in a safe is preferable. But my dad used to have a gun safe, and I guarantee that it would take longer for him to respond to a home invasion by retrieving a gun from a safe and firing than it would for him to unholster a smart gun, go a retina scan or some ridiculously inefficient authentication method, and then fire.

I mean in the context of carrying on your person - reliability being that the gun will fire when the trigger is pulled and you won't have jams, speed being that the safety mechanistic (if there is one) needs to be instantaneous to disengage.

There are safes that are biometric that quickly and automatically present your gun in an easy to grab fashion such as this. Most gun owners keep something like that on their nightstand.

> Leaving a weapon in a safe is basically putting all of the responsibility of being reliable in your own hands, hoping that you will either A) be packing and have it loaded when you need it, or B) be close enough to your safe, and cool enough under pressure, that you will have sufficient time and notice to defend yourself.

You're either sleeping and the gun is at your nightstand (or within reaching distance), or you are carrying, which is whenever I'm not sleeping. When I'm sleeping, I can have my gun ready in about 5 seconds. When I'm out in public, it's always on my person.

> I just don't see how a smart gun, even one with something as time consuming as a retina scan, is less reliable and rapidly available than a gun in a safe.

You're making a general statement about the gun being in a safe and being unreachable when that isn't normally the case. Gun owners keep their gun at their nightstand, or in a biometric safe, or a similar safe that is quickly opened (and it's always within reaching distance).

The problem with a "smart-gun" isn't for when you're sleeping. The problem with a "smart-gun" is when you're pointing the gun at your target and it not firing reliably when you need it to be. In other words, less than a quarter of a second could mean death. Any jam could mean death. This is partly the reason why law enforcement uses Glocks because there is no safety mechanism to disengage (and they're just flat out extremely reliable and always shoot).

> A smart gun would allow you to carry any time, anywhere, with almost no fear of your gun accidentally killing someone or not being available when you need it.

You're advocating a "smart-gun" for the wrong reasons. The advantage to a theoretical "smart-gun" is that it can't be stolen and used by someone else. Guns don't have any issues with accidentally killing someone - the gun is only going to fire if the operator pulls the trigger, that's the way guns work.

> If such a smart gun was made, I can almost guarantee that it would be more reliable under pressure than the average human responding to a true threat.

It wouldn't, but I'm happy to elaborate why you're wrong. A gun is reliable because 1) It is well designed, 2) It is battle-tested and proven, 3) It doesn't jam. A gun's reliablity is purely mechanical and has absolutely nothing to do with performing under pressure.

The problem with "smart-guns" is because creating such a gun would require a complete overhaul of gun design as we know it. Guns include a lot of parts - think of a gun like an old-fashioned watch. There are hundreds of modern guns that aren't reliable, which is the reason the Military and Government only use certain guns. New designs for modern day guns take an average of around 5-10 years to design. Designing a "smart-gun" would require at least twice as much time and would definitely not meet the military's standard of reliability (coincidentally, a civilian's standard for reliability is the same as the military because life is that valuable) because the technology just doesn't exist. It would be the equivalent to colonists with their muskets (the ones where you smolder a wick to the gunpowder) in the 1700s inventing an AR-15.

> The limiting factor in reliability would be the shooter 99.99999% of the time, not the gun. If the shooter is more reliable than the gun... Well that's a scrapped design.

Reliability is always the gun, never the shooter. All the shooter does is pull the trigger. Reliability is a gigantic issue with existing modern firearms because not all firearms meet that standard. My point is that reliable firearms are a challenge as it is already. There are only a few guns that I would recommend as a daily carry.

Not offense, but I can tell that you don't know much about guns, but I'm happy to answer your questions. :)

I don't see any specific recommendations for a safe, so wanted to make two specific ones. I have used and love both. Both are simplex style locking systems.

  • VLine's The Brute
    • Box-style; good to have it sit in one place. Holes in the bottom so you can screw it into the floorboards if you want (get it into joists). Surprisingly heavy duty for its size.

  • Solo Vault M 200
    • Slightly lighter weight than the brute, with the ability to be chained to things. Can be used to store locked up in a car, for example. If you get a chain, get a heavy duty one and a heavy duty lock with a long ish loop, put the lock loop through both ends of the chain and the designated hole in the box (it should make sense once you see the box, so maybe get box and look at it before getting a chain).

Simplex locks are very reliable, but they also have a finite number of codes. A clever person with a ton of time on their hands could exhaustively try all codes to get in eventually. So they are not foolproof (no safe is), so you need to bear that in mind and be vigilant.

Both are excellent and I think nearly the best for your purpose. I'd actually lean towards the M200 for your purpose.

Finally, as I'm sure many have said, a safe is not a set-and-forget thing if you have a child. You must also teach your child about dangers of firearms. (It sounds like this has been said plenty by others so I'll leave it at that).

ps ALSO, a Ruger SP101s are excellent, high-quality firearms - you made a great choice for a revolver and should not experience the problems you describe. As others have indicated, Ruger customer service is some of the best in the business. Contact them and they should help you out.

Pretty sure it is this one.

This seems pretty nice. It is affordable, and the mounting mechanisms seem pretty versatile. From the reviews, it seems like a G19 is about the biggest gun that will fit, so take that into consideration.

I don't have any personal experience with this, but I can't imagine you'd really need much more in a car safe.

u/kcpwnsgman · 1 pointr/CCW

Lock boxes are awesome.

I'll find myself out carrying at night downtown and find that they're really good if, for example, I'm with friends and we decide we want to go to a bar, or I'm at a concert that wands you down or something.

This is what I have. I wanted the beefiest, no bullshit safe that Andrew Jackson can afford. Note that I got mine specifically knowing that all safes/locks are not unbeatable, but that this one specifically would be a real pain in the ass and a time sink to get out of my car when used properly, especially when comparing the competition.

It's bolted under my driver's seat, and the locking mechanism attaches to the bolted down frame with a steel cable wrapped around part of the seat. In this case, you do get what you pay for. The steel, while very sturdy, and when mounted under my seat makes it hard to get to and defeat, I think would still give way with enough patience and heavy beatings with a heavy hammer or prybar. The steel cable is kind of thin and mounted very haphazardly to the safe. The key/lock mechanism also leaves a lot to be desired.

I plan on finding a more secure, harder to cut cable to mount to it and replacing the cylinder lock with one that's harder to defeat or pick.

I've had my car broken into twice. First time was a smash and grab, window broken and they took my gym bag out of it. They didn't even notice anything else in the car. Second time I swear I locked my car, but they got in anyway (entirely possible I forgot). They through all my stuff, glove box, center console etc. The safe wasn't tampered with. I do not know if it was even noticed.

The only thing new it brings is RF opening, which is stupid, and a cell connection to tell you when it's been moved or attempted to be opened and give a gps location.(That'll cost $420 + monitoring costs).

Which could end up costing you more than the gun itself in a few years in the rare event someone tries to take your gun box. Easily not be a problem with a simple $10 security cable.

Gun Vault makes these kinds of boxes, though they are square, that do quick code input and biometric fingerprint opening, for half the cost of this. plus back up key opening for when the battery is dead, cause as the maker of this says "If the gun box is not plugged in and the battery is dead it will not open. It has to have power to open."

.40 or .45, the 9mm would be enough stopping power but for the price difference between a 9 and a .40 I would go with a .40.. And for safety get this type of safe..

BosnianBill (Retired Army EOD, Lockpicking guru and gun nut) just gave this amazon safe a thumbs up.

Here is his video, he rarely recommends a product (because most are shit) so if I were looking for one this would be the one I would buy.

I have a larger version of this and I like it a lot.

It allows you to set your own combination for fast access. Mine is a quick 6 button pattern. I bought it because I have a curios 2 year old. I can get to this box and get my pistol ready within 10 seconds from anywhere in the house and am comfortable keeping it with one in the chamber so the wife can easily use it as well.

Mine is a little bigger. I store my shield in it with the extra mag and a silicone cloth for wipe downs with plenty of room. I recommend steering away from finger print scanning because it could take multiple scans for a read. And you never know, you could be trying to access it with blood covered hands...

empty mag, put it in the box separately. Also, just get the ammo box that it came with (Cardboard is perfectly OK). You also need to be able to lock the case. I recommend getting a box that can you can attach a steel cable and loop it to(something like this) either the structure of the suit case.

It's a 38/357, like this one! I can't take credit for the idea, I learned it from the lovely women here (: Larger ammo boxes for lipsticks! Why didn't I think of that!? What size may I ask?

I just used a $12 plastic ammo crate from amazon
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T4XL2MO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and 1 set of these card display cases that fit the decks just right!

and just a simple small fishing box!

I'm using the deck boxes (now empty) as placeholders till i get some foam to keep everything from sliding around! I have 2 of the expansions but have plenty of room to fit even more!

I have a 10 month old and have similar worries.

I got a sentry safe pistol box for my bedside storage just to keep it away the little one. It is a quick access combo lock and has a key backup in case the battery dies or you forget the combo.

If I had the cash I would probably go with fort knox box for the pistol though, they seem to be highly recommended.

As for the rifle I have seen one or two like this that are quick access, wall mounted options.

I've been looking at these. They have a key mode and a fingerprint mode.

Little small for gear AND a pistol, but I have this one for my nightstand. Works great, pretty cheap, at least comparatively.

I have three handguns in my Barska Biometric safe.
http://amzn.com/B002AQ0PFW

I have a Glock 19 with a full mag + 1 in the chamber with a tac light attached with an extra mag next to it. A Ruger 22/45 unloaded, and a Springfield XDs loaded (carry gun). I also have 2 or 3 boxes of ammo stuffed in the back, and 2 fully loaded 30 rd PMAGs for my AR15. Also, there's my keys for my gun case and my GunVault MagVault:

TL/DR: It's pretty big.

Good luck enforcing this. I have my LTC and concealed carry almost everywhere I go. You'll have absolutely no idea who had a firearm on them if they're doing it properly. Check out CCW Reciprocity laws if you're that concerned, however every night I stay in an unfamiliar place, I lock it up in one of these:
