This looks to be a Coast Polysteel 200. It's $30 on Amazon.

It will get the job done. I would strongly suggest not using alkaline batteries, as they have a tendency to leak. If the light will sit in the car unused, the Energizer L92 lithium battery is appropriate. If it will be used often, the Panasonic Eneloop rechargeable will be much more cost-effective.

That said, I don't like it. Here are some reasons:

  • Three AAA batteries is an obnoxious configuration. The performance is similar to one AA, but it's more spares to carry, more charger slots used to recharge and more time to change batteries. It's used to allow for cheaper electronics, but there are plenty of good 1xAA lights for $30.
  • The advertised performance of 320lm for 3 hours and 45 minutes is not possible with this battery configuration except by severe abuse of the FL1 standard. Output over time likely looks similar to this when most of us would generally prefer to see stable output.
  • The color quality with Coast lights is known to be poor. The tint is usually very cool white, nearly blue looking, and the color rendering index is almost certainly very low. I'm not sure anybody's actually tested the CRI, but it's always low when it's not advertised as high. This means washed out colors, difficulty distinguishing an orange wire from a red wire, a stick from a snake, etc....
  • Zoom mechanisms compromise water and dust resistance and tend not to provide as useful a beam pattern as a decent reflector at any setting.
  • I'd like to see more than two modes, especially a lower minimum mode, though that's personal preference.

Some lights I'd rather have for $30 include:

  • Manker E03H (Nichia 219C version) - this is a right-angle light with a magnetic tailcap. That means it works as a handheld, a headlamp or a magnetic work light (e.g. attached to the hood of a car). The Nichia 219C emitter has very good color accuracy. 1xAA battery.
  • Acebeam M10 - mostly because the Thrunite T10 is between production runs, there's a Nichia version of this in the works which will be highly recommended. Straight tube light, 3 modes, 1xAA battery but the LED it comes with now isn't very pretty.
  • Wowtac A2S (neutral white version) - a right-angle light like the E03H, but more powerful. Includes a USB-rechargeable battery and can also use standard 18650 Li-ion rechargeable batteries. No magnet though.
  • Wowtac A1S - similar performance to the above with a straight body.

I didn't list anything that requires a less common rechargeable battery if it isn't included or ordering from overseas, but lifting those restrictions would open up a lot more options like the Astrolux S41 and various Convoy lights.
u/General_Specialist · 23 pointsr/flashlight

I think you would be happier and more comfortable with something like a Wowtac A2s in that price range.

u/ajswdf · 14 pointsr/MaliciousCompliance

Maybe she can use one of these. Although that's less fun than bickering.

u/SleepWalkersDream · 13 pointsr/flashlight

Definetly Wowtac A2S as I need to upgrade to the 18650 world.
Edit: Aw maan, it would appear that I don't have the required 100 comment carma :/

Wowtac A2S

Definitely the most recommended budget friendly headlamp around here. Bright, tough, waterproof, good UI with shortcuts to firefly and turbo, can be used handheld or on a headband, comes with a battery that has a micro USB port for charging, so it’s perfect if you don’t have 18650s and a charger yet.

u/Virisenox_ · 12 pointsr/flashlight

If you're okay with a headlamp that takes 18650s, take a look at these.

u/OWSIN · 10 pointsr/flashlight

>Need a budget friendly right angle tactical flashlight in Canada

Here you go

u/bombadil1564 · 10 pointsr/flashlight

Second the headlamp suggestion. The Wowtac A2S is also a popular budget choice.

It comes in neutral white (many people prefer this tint over cool white), also comes with a 18650 cell that can be recharged via a micro USB cord. Much cheaper than buying light+ battery+ charger.

u/Wolczyk · 10 pointsr/CampingGear

Ya I could give some recommendations.

First, that 200 lumens claimed by Black Diamond is more than likely inflated. How long do they claim that lasts?

Second, a lot of people who enjoy the outdoors believe that a red light is best for keeping night vision. Over at r/flashlight it has been debated a lot and the general consensus is that a "sub-lumen mode" is better than a red light for keeping night vision. That would be a mode that is below 1 lumen, and I could not agree more.

Now for the recommendations (Please note I did not have time to find the best deals out there, so please look around for better pricing. Also, I recommend for all the below recommendations that you go with the WARMEST tint.):

Wowtac A2S- Well regarded as one of the best starter headlamps out there at a great price. Comes with a rechargeable battery.

Skillhunt H03- Another highly praised light at a decent price. Does not come with a battery. This light would require a battery that could be charged or a battery with a charger.

Olight H1R Honestly, I don't know much about this one as I am not a fan of Olight. However, Olight is a well regarded brand and I gurantee many people out there enjoy that light.

Armytek Wizard Pro- My personal favorite of the group. Very well regarded light with an amazing beam pattern and vast range of setting. Although a little expensive, this is an amazing light I have no problem recommending. Also check out the Elf and the Tiara

Zebralight Again, I don't know much about Zebralight. However, most people over at r/flashlight debate whether Zebralight or Armytek makes the best headlamp. If you like Zebralight and want a specific model recommendation, check over in the sub reddit.

There are a lot more out there. u/parametrek has created a database where you can put in your requirements and it will show you basically every light under the sun that is a good fit. Check it out http://flashlights.parametrek.com/index.html

u/ZapperDubs · 9 pointsr/flashlight

I'll go with this AA Zebralight, much appreciated as always!

u/parametrek · 9 pointsr/flashlight

> I might want something that takes disposable batteries, considering I may be down in the cave for hours.

You don't want disposables! You do want something that can take spare rechargeable batteries.

Take a look at the $30 Wowtac A2S in neutral white. And then spend the remain money on spare 18650 and a charger at Illumn.

u/_amass · 8 pointsr/flashlight

The Wowtac A1S and Wowtac A2S are both excellent.

u/bmengineer · 8 pointsr/flashlight

If you need it that soon, you're probably best ordering off Amazon. I'd suggest the Wowtac A1S, [Wowtac A2S](https://www.amazon.com/Headlamp-Headlight-Rechargeable-Waterproof-Headlamps/dp/B075ZN5LJY/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?keywords=wowtac&qid=1558886240&s=gateway&sr=8-2&th=1&p sc=1), or the Acebeam H40, unless you want something more expensive.

u/wrathfulgrapes · 8 pointsr/running

You have a lot of recommendations to get a headlamp and a reflective vest, I wanted to weigh in on what kind of headlamp you should consider.

Ideally you'd get something lightweight, with enough power to see in front of you and make yourself somewhat visible (although that's more what the reflective vest is for). You should also get something with removable batteries so you could bring spares.

Most of the recommendations on here are for climbing lights by companies like Petzl which are colorful and fun and if you go with one of those you'll probably be fine.

But there are much better options. Those climbing lights (at least the cheaper ones) aren't waterproof, they're splash/sneeze resistant. Might last a while in rain. But IPX8 waterproof would be better. Also they're mostly plastic. The expensive ones are insanely expensive. Here are some cheaper, more bombproof options (all single AA, there are other AAA and 18650 options too but 1xAA makes for a very lightweight package):

Zebralight H53c ($59)
Excellent light, I own it's bigger brother the H600, fantastic build quality all around. 79 grams with battery.

Manker E03H ($35) Another good option. Go for the Nichia LED, much better color accuracy. 103 grams with battery.

[Fenix HL23] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UHZXAYG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_kglPBbREJNAKJ) ($35) Reputable brand, good light. Not as waterproof, only IPX6. Still solid. 75 grams with battery.

There are a few more options, especially if you want more (18650) or less (AAA) power and weight. Check out /r/flashlight for more info. Or hit me up. Good luck and stay safe out there.

u/jay76 · 7 pointsr/flashlight

I'm gonna ask do you need to do anything with your hands during these inspections - and if so, would a headlamp be more suitable?

For example:

  • Nitecore HC50
  • Zebralight H502. It's AA, but closeup inspections aren't going to require high output so you may want to consider the convenience of the format.
u/mpak87 · 7 pointsr/flashlight

That's kind of a tough set of requirements. Most of the lights we generally recommend have done away with the red mode in favor of a very dim white. While there are some military requirements that dictate its use, generally speaking you need a lot more red brightness to see what you're able to with a lower level of white. For many years it was hard to make a white light dim enough to do this properly, but technology has caught up. We can probably recommend some, but they aren't going to be the best lights around.

Next issue is the rubber strap. There are probably some available, but none that I know of off the top of my head. Most lights use an elastic fabric strap. You could probably replace it with some rubber if necessary, but the industry standard is something else.

The Skilhunt H03 mentioned in another comment is a really excellent light, it uses an 18650 size battery, which is the best compromise of size versus runtime that you'll find, and an unbeatable light for the money. You can find one here. You'll also need a couple of Batteries and a charger. This is the best setup you'll get for the $50 budget.

If by single-strap you mean that you don't want one going over the top of the head, an AA form factor light would probably be your best bet. The Thrunite TH20 is a steal for $30. It runs on normal AA batteries (not recommended because they leak, but doable in a pinch) or 14500 lithium cells. With the 14500 cells, it has over 500 lumens of brightness at the top level, and a ramping interface that lets you choose exactly the amount of light you want. It's lightweight, tough, waterproof, and the controls are intuitive. It has a very low moonlight mode that I'd rather have than any of my previous red mode lights, and there's a direct shortcut to it so you don't have to scroll through higher modes in order to get to it. If you go this route, you'd need some of these batteries and the charger I linked to above. Note that the battery and charger links are not to Amazon, there is a risk of counterfeit batteries buying there, so most people here buy from illumn.com or liionwholesale.com.

I realize these suggestions are a bit of departure from what you are asking for, but based on what I understand of your use case I think they would be your best options.

u/jquagga · 7 pointsr/flashlight

I’d scale back the frequency now and potentially the prize amount later (cap it). While we greatly appreciate it, I don’t want you to suffer for our prizes.

That said, if the random number generate favors me, I’d like a Zebralight H53c. I’ve determined I have hard preferences for 4000-4500K, high CRI and regulated lights. I have a wowtac and a sofirn which are 5000K and they need to go. My existing SC53c is a favorite. :-).

u/archover · 7 pointsr/flashlight

Honestly, for "cheap" headlamps go to Walmart, and buy extra batteries for whatever.

For "inexpensive" headlamps, see the sidebar article Arbitrary List section "Right Angle" and Small and Medium lights.

My choice would be the $30, fast shipping Wowtac A2S NW headlamp which includes light, li-ion battery, and USB charging. Buy an extra cell to effectively double the already long life. This light is comfortable to wear and reliable over hundreds of usages.

Also note that one Li-ion rechargeable battery has 3-4x the power of one alkaline AA battery. As to leaky alkaline cells, that would not be my choice to power an "emergency" light. That said, the best light is the one you have when you need it.

u/dbmeed · 7 pointsr/flashlight

What kind of budget are we talking about here? Any preferred battery size?

Personally, my suggestion would be the Wowtac A1S or Wowtac A2S

I don't know if I would trust any headlamp with a USB-C port on it into a cave... it seems like asking for trouble with it getting filled with mud and other nasty stuff. A similar light is the Nitecore HC50, which is $15 cheaper and has red lights. I have this light and have taken it in many muddy, wet caves and have banged it up something good and it is still rocking strong. The beam is awesome, and while it's only 565 lm this is honestly still brighter than useful pretty much always. I typically run it at the second or third brightness setting anyways. My only complaint with this light is that it is a bit heavy, which isn't really a problem when strapped to an ecrin roc, but can be annoying when not using it with a helmet around the camp.

My favorite light is my Zebralight, the hype for this thing is well deserved. While it doesn't have a red light, the form factor is awesome. It is super light on the head without the hassle of a battery in the back. I think many people will agree that the Zebralight H600 series is one of the best caving lights you can get. (note there four versions of the H600, two LED colors cool and neutral, and two beam spreads, flood and spot)

Nitecore makes a blatant ripoff of the Zebralight that is $30 cheaper. While I don't have one of these, I did have a chance to play with one after a buddy of mine got one and it seems to be pretty neat. Considering how much I like my Nitecore HC50 I'm willing to bet this would be a solid light to get as well. One thing I like about the Zebralight over the Nitecore is that it works with flat-top 18650 batteries so you can bust open old laptop batteries and use the cells to power the light, whereas the Nitecore requires a button top 18650. Not a huge issue but something to consider.

Edit (some more thoughts):

It sounds like you are new to caving, welcome! I would recommend that you attend a local grotto meeting, which I believe for you would be the Southern California Grotto. You may meet some awesome people and it's a good way to get involved in the sport.

Also, with your flashlight purchase don't forget to get an 18650 battery and a charger for it. You may already have these since you have the Nitecore MH25 but I figured I'd mention it just in case. Be careful with the batteries to get a reputable brand because there are a lot of fakes out there. Panasonic makes good batteries, but unfortunately there are a lot of ones that say Panasonic that are made somewhere else and a lot of ones that say other things that are made by Panasonic. Confusing! I got this one and it works great. You can take a risk with cheaper ones, just know they might not last so long. This charger works good for me. I've had both of my lights last for a 14 hour cave trip so the battery life is pretty good.

u/mcfarlie6996 · 6 pointsr/flashlight

So this is going to slightly exceed your budget but it'll be one of the best options in terms of raw power and great performance.

So first is the NW Thrunite TH10 but this light concerns me because its reflector is slightly large giving it a tighter hotspot which isn't quite ideal for hands on projects. The head does come off so I'm thinking this would work to convert it to a mule light by taking out the reflector. (Mule means a flashlight with no hotspot which is ideal for hands on work.)

It might seem redneck in a sense but it actually makes the light have dual purpose. As is the light is more ideal for walking/hiking where you need light further away from you and then you could take the reflector out to convert it for closer applications. Hopefully someone can confirm my theory on their TH10. ~wink wink, nudge nudge~

My 2nd recommendation would the Nitecore HC50 which seems cheaper but it doesn't come with a battery or charger(trust me on these). This light is going to be a bit more ideal close up because of the larger reflector. I'm not the biggest fan of the Cool White tint but to most people just getting into high powered flashlights it's not even a concern for them.

Both lights have really good modes and features. It'll be up to you if to decide what's best though for him. Feel free to ask any questions. There are cheaper lights but we'd lose the ability of the 18650 battery feature. These are higher energy batteries that are found in laptops. Although the 18650 isn't much bigger than a AA battery, it holds the energy of over 5 AA Alkaline batteries to give you an idea of how awesome they are.

u/techguy24 · 6 pointsr/flashlight

Wowtac A2S is a great starting light if you don't want to spend as much as a Zebralight starting out. You could always keep it as a backup if you decide to get something fancier too.

Depending on how technically inclined you are, I'd consider swapping out the LED for something high CRI (I put an LH351D in one, and it's much better) and maybe a TIR lens if you want more peripheral vision.

u/lpcxwm · 6 pointsr/flashlight

This is a great idea.

Have you considered a wrist mount, or a mount design for somewhere else on your body that would allow for both your hands to be free? You could design a baseplate that could go on a headband light... like remove this lamp that is attached to add your design?

u/ThisIsWhatICarry · 5 pointsr/caving

What is your budget?

<$20: a good book on caving, or some batteries. Lithium AA/AAA if they don't like rechargeables, AA/AAA NiMH if they do. I've had good luck with the brand Tenergy, which is sold in bulk by AllBattery.com. They're basically cheap Chinese imports but their QA is decent. (Source: I'm a professional photographer who's used them for years.) Go for the 2,500 mAh capacity. You might also consider a decent charger. More on that shortly.

<$50: One of the best chargers on the market is this bad boy, but it's somewhat expensive and only charges 4 cells at once. However, it charges them safely (not overcharging, not charging too fast, etc, which limits long-term life), can identify bad cells, and can charge almost any cylindrical battery out there, including the far superior 18650 cell, which is important for a good headlamp or flashlight. For a good headlamp, consider the ThruNite TH10 in neutral white for $40, or the same headlamp with a battery for $15 more. Note: this light doesn't use AA/AAA batteries; it uses the 18650 battery, which is slightly larger but 4 times the capacity of an AA battery and is able to discharge power fast enough to support amazingly bright lights. Every light I'm linking here supports multiple brightness modes, with a maximum brightness around 1,000 lumens, i.e. as bright as your car's headlights. They also drop to between 0.4 lumens and 1 lumen at their lowest setting, which will last for up to 70-ish days. Yes, really. That's a nice feature to have in a cave.

<$100: A good headlamp/flashlight. Most cavers I know are old-school when it comes to flashlights because they aren't aware of some of the incredible LED and battery innovations that have occured. Most of their headlamps are either small and underpowered or huge and bulky and... still underpowered sometimes. I'd recommend a ThruNite TC-12 v2 in neutral white. It also uses an 18650 battery. The light bundle I linked includes one battery and the light is USB chargable, though that charger I linked earlier will charge the battery faster.

You can add a helmet strap if you know they use a helmet. If you're looking for a headlamp instead of a flashlight, consider the ThruNite TH10 I linked earlier or the Nitecore HC30 in neutral white which is slightly more expensive. Nitecore and ThruNite are fairly similar, though in my opinion Nitecore looks more "tactical" while ThruNite's electronics are slightly better. Both are good companies, however.

<$150: If you decide to get a light and extra batteries, don't get any battery with a brand containing the word "fire". (Those brands are known for lying about the capacities and being fire risks.) I'd recommend a 4-pack of KeepPower 3,400 mAh 18650 batteries if you're going for that kind of batteries as they're a good brand and I own them myself.

Some other considerations: a nice base layer, i.e. thermal underwear. I'd strongly recommend merino wool as it's thin, light, and warm even when it's wet. Cost: $50-$100 per item for a top or bottom/long johns. And they'll always have a warm, fuzzy feeling when they think of you. ;-)

u/UncleHayai · 5 pointsr/flashlight

Just get the Thrunite TH20 in neutral white:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FCV32SI/

If you find that 250 lumens isn't bright enough for you (keeping in mind that high-end incandescent headlamps put out ~10-50 lumens), come back and ask about getting a 14500 lithium-ion battery and charger.

If that still isn't bright enough for you, know that even 18650 Li-ion headlamps can't sustain more brightness than that for long without getting too hot.

u/Handsome_Zack · 5 pointsr/flashlight

If its really going to take that much of a beating, I'm a fan of Streamlight for dependability. Their ProTac 2L-X was on my shortlist of lights for a good while, so long as you don't mind a blue-as-heck LED. It also comes out to 500 lumens with a good usable beam. Its not compact, but its within your budget and slips quite comfortably into a jeans pocket and clips to most anything with its two-way pocket clip. Other lights you might want to check out are the Thrunite TN-12 or Neutron, or if you just want a cheap light that is a good starter to 18650's I am a huge fan of the WOWTAC A1S (their A2S is also a well-reputed starter headlamp).

This will help after dark.

Do you have any more info on what you'll be doing with it exactly? Is this a "take the dog out" kind of light?

The Wowtac A1S or A2S are both good, bright lights. The A2S is a headlamp, but you can take it out of the headband and use it normally, and a headlamp can come in handy sometimes. They both come with a removable battery that has built-in microUSB charging. The "neutral white" version of either light is recommended for more pleasant light.

Wowtac A2S Neutral White

Even worse. That light is probably 300 lumens.

I would recommend this one instead:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075ZN5LJY/ref=twister_B07BZZFY3J?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Choosing the A2S Neutral White version, it includes a very good battery, and is a real 1000 lumens out of the light.
It can also be used as both a headlamp, and a flashlight! A multi use light.

u/lhauckphx · 4 pointsr/flashlight

This one fits the bill for me. Not too expensive, neutral white, usb rechargeable battery, and headlight band, Not too big.

Wowtac a2s natural white

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075ZN5LJY/ref=twister_B07BZZFY3J?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

The a2 is slightly cheaper, not as bright, only comes in cool white.

u/NoOnesAnonymous · 4 pointsr/toddlers

u/day1patch · 4 pointsr/flashlight

In terms of bright the Armytek Wizard Pro is hard to beat. It does however have a bit more flood than throw, but are you sure you need throw? I much prefer having a wider angle to see a bit to the sides. I know the Thrunite TH-10 I bought before the Wizard has more throw and is plentyt bright as well.

u/flyliceplick · 4 pointsr/flashlight

Thrunite TN12 and Wowtac A2S perhaps? Both take Li-ion 18650 rechargeable batteries. The A2S does SOS at least, if that satisfies your flashing function.

You should be able to get those two, plus batteries and charger for less than £100. You'll need a separate pocket clip for the A2S in order to hang it off a pocket, belt, stab vest, etc and of the ones here I think the best one is the 21-23mm as the A2S is 23.5mm.

u/effortDee · 4 pointsr/trailrunning

After a headlamp for long miles but don't want to break the bank because it's a potential christmas gift?

Get the Wowtac A2S a 18650 L shaped headlamp and it's perfect for running (unless you're in fog or the clouds and its dark!)

https://www.amazon.com/Headlamp-Headlight-Rechargeable-Waterproof-Headlamps/dp/B071HW5XQH/&tag=crtrftrd-20

Been running with this for a few months now and it's incredible, has firefly 1 lumen mode which apparently lasts weeks, then 10, 60, 200 lumen modes, i run with the 60lumen mode around the mountains and it's perfect, occasionaly clicking in to the 200 lumens to see ahead. Also has turbo and strode modes which I don't use but might one day for some photography stuff.

The reason I got it is that the 63lumen mode can run for 19+ hours, and it's 18650. Everyone needs to start migrating to 18650 running headlamps/torches. It's also a third of the price of any petzl or other "named" headlamp runners use and imo better. If you head over to /r/flashlight they will all say the same.

I am comparing this to a Nextorch Eco star (2xAAA) headlamp which is fantastic but comes in at 40lumens which just wasn't bright enough for some runs. Many different torches (I have a big collection) and i've tested friends petzls and other overpriced head torches, the wowtac beats it hands down!

u/NerfEveryoneElse · 4 pointsr/flashlight

I believe an angled light is better for camping in general(you need two hands when cooking or setup tent), it can be used as both headlamp or hand held, also can be clipped on belt or backpack. If you dont have any experience with 18650, a wowtac A2S is the best starter package I believe. Or if you are more interested in the straight option, a Nite Ize headband can mount any straight light less than 1" on your head.

u/zerostyle · 4 pointsr/flashlight

I've been researching this myself. I do think you need to specify a few things first though:

  • Do you ever need to use it as a headlamp?
  • Do you care about weight/size?
  • Prefer floody vs longer throw/spot?

The ones I'm considering are mostly mentioned in this thread, but I'll list a few:

    Headlamps:

  • Wowtac A2 and A2S - cheap because it includes a rechargeable battery. No neutral white for a few more months, though. $20-$30.
  • Skilhunt H03 - seems to be my favorite option with a coupon. Considered more floody than the wowtac above, and can swap out the TIR for 45/60 degree if you want. $30 with coupon

    Regular lights / slightly cheaper:

  • Atactical A1S and A1 - similar to wowtac above. Dirt cheap good lights. $20-$30
  • Convoy S2+ - also a good cheap small light. People seem to think that the 7135x6 driver is the best option and choose one of the neutral white emitters (4.5-5k or so). The brighter temp is on sale for 9.99 right now, but you might want the 5A or 4C options. Considered a floody light. Custom firmware can be loaded onto it. $10-$16.
  • Astrolux S1 - was designed the budgetlightforum. Similar to the Convoy, but has a custom driver for more brightness but also runs a lot hotter. Has a custom firmware. $23.

    Battery options:

From my research, the best values batteries are these, depending on category:

Highest capacity, current good for maybe 6A (some say 10A):

    Panasonic 35E or Sanyo NCR18650GA

    Need high current: (10-20A)

    Sony VTC6 or Samsung 30Q

More than $25, but take a look at ZebraLight headlamps.

I've been using one for about ten years now without an issue. Great lens angle (covers your entire field of view) and uses a single AA battery which is super easy to replace while it's still mounted on your head.

Edit: fixed linkage

ThruNite TH20 NW

u/DriftMonkey · 3 pointsr/flashlight

The ThruNite TH20 (neutral white) is right in your range, but I think something with an optic/frosted lens would be better suited for working on cars. So...

It's a bit over your stated $30, but I think the Skillhunt H15 (neutral white) fits the bill. The TIR optic should spread the beam nicely and work very well for working on cars. There is a group buy thread over on BLF that might knock down the price some as well.

Both of these are AA/14500. If you'd be willing to go with a 18650, you could get something with more output/runtime, but that'd be up to you.

u/Beastlykings · 3 pointsr/flashlight

You're the best man, I love the h03, would be great to have a second one to keep in the car at all times. Neutral white, in case the link isn't right.

More flood or throw?

If flood: Skilhunt H03 Neutral White!

Awesome little light. I just got mine a few days ago and it has replaced my olight S20r already. It's tiny, and puts out a ton of light with 8 brightness modes from 0.3 to 900 lumens. It's a right angle light with a pocket clip, magnetic tail cap and head strap. It's basically a perfect car light.

Edit: if you want more throw, the H03R is only $34. It's not as floody and has more throw.

Edit2: oops H03R is out of stock

Edit 3: Apparently Amazon carries the Skilhunts as well. Both the H03 NW and the H03R both cheaper than GearBest's full prices.

u/eva_k · 3 pointsr/climbing

I really like my Nitecore NU30. I've tried a number of Petzl and BD headlamps, but this one wins for rechargeable batteries, low weight, and light output options.

u/Woknblues · 3 pointsr/trailrunning

I'm cycling through a few headlamps right now. I'm not a super long distance runner, and the trails I run are not very technical, I like light in weight and durable and not bouncy, so my needs are different like anyone else. I'm a bit of a flashlight nerd.

I've got https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0120RIWUK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_VNH8ybY8TM0P7

It's small, and crazy cheap and feels pretty sturdy, at only an ounce and a bit. Takes button type batteries (a pair included nicely) and lasts 20hrs on the low light setting, half on medium and 6hrs on high. The high of 65 lumens is plenty bright, but I don't run very technical trails. It also has red light for night vision preservation for map reading, etc.

Nitecore T T360 45 lm Flashlight https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CXCZ2L0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_FPH8yb82WTSVG

This one is the weight weeny winner at 3/4 Ounce, you can hardly feel it. The Cree led is very bright and the device can be clipped into belts, packs and elsewhere and is very positionable. It's usb rechargeable, can run while being charged (virtually can run forever if paired with a small powerbank). It's also be positioned via ball and socket joint, so you can get it dialed in perfectly. If using at high, it only lasts about an hour. Low will give you 4hrs but it would be ideal for groomed trails, etc.

The bigger daddy to this one is
Nitecore NU20 360 Lumens Rechargeable Lightweight LED Headlamp with USB Cable and Lumen Tactical USB AC Power Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N0DAKDQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_SOH8ybTQNEB5E

I can't get over how relatively light and useful this one is just under two ounces. Just like the one above, pass through USB chargeable (on the fly) for unlimited use. Dazzlingly bright. The medium setting will run for 8 hrs or so and it's enough for just about as technical as you can get I'd imagine. The high is crazy bright. The rendering is good in this light, it's much warmer than your typical cheapo led

There's a nu40 that scales up from here, but for my needs, I've got enough to go out and run.

I've also got a bad ass 1200lumen H3 warboy headlamp using an unprotected 18650, but that's for hiking, camping, hunting and walks. Too clunky for me to run with at about 3 ounces. Kind of a Chinese made zebralight.

Cycling though brightness levels is by just holding down the switch. No need for clicking. The less necessary and used modes like SOS and firefly are hidden so you don't accidentally go there. Plus, it has last mode memory which is very important to me.

Edit; I see others have said Wowtac. Really, really good headlamp. I'm a mechanic and it has held up to all the dirty abuse that comes from that.

This time around, I’d like to try for the Zebralight H53c headlamp

u/sco0ts19 · 3 pointsr/flashlight

The H53c is available on Amazon.

The 503 models are mules (no reflector, most spill). The H53fc has the same reflector as the h53c, just with a frosted lens for more spill.

The H53c has the most throw of the bunch which sounds like what you want. I have one and it is a good lightweight and versatile headlamp. Also consider getting some quality nimh batteries instead of using alkalines that could (will) leak and ruin your light!

Thirded. Wowtac A2S is at the upper budget, but it's a spectacular deal and pretty much perfect for what you want. Can't charge it while you're using it, but you can get more batteries, and it'll run 14hrs on the ~100lm medium mode, which is plenty of light for hiking.

u/atetuna · 2 pointsr/CampingGear

Long battery life with high output and mostly trail walking, a Zebralight H602. Long battery life with high output and mostly task work, an Armytek Wizard Pro. Light weight, good output, and mostly trail walking, a Zebralight H52.

I think some of those may exceed your range unless they're on sale or clearance, so I'll also mention that the Skilhunt headlamp gets lots of recommendations, but I haven't bought it because I really don't need more headlamps unless there's a new one that checks all my boxes in a big way. Wowtac also gets a lot of recommendations, falls at or below your price range, and is on Amazon, but I don't personally have this one either.

If you want a headlamp with continuously variable output, then Imalent has the HR20 that dips as low as $25, and I have this light, so I'll add that the only thing preventing me from totally loving this light is that the ergonomics for the control ring can occasionally block access. Nitecore has at least one headlamp with continuously variable output, but the one I know of uses a slider and was around $90.

For more recommendations, and probably better recommendations, /r/parametrek has a light database that you can use to filter by features and get a list of lights that suits your needs, and then go on /r/flashlight or budgetlightforum.com to see what people actually think about those lights.

Some of these you'd have to order from China on sites like Banggood or Gearbest. Here's a few tips if you haven't bought from a Chinese vendor before. Be warned that two week delivery is very quick. 4 weeks is typical. 2 months occasionally happens. If you get a defective light, you'll have to haggle with them once a day for several days if you wish for them to send you a full refund, and you'll probably still have to go to Paypal to force their hand. Don't bother with shipping insurance because you can't claim it directly, and you're covered with Paypal anyway. The tracking number, if you get one at all, doesn't really work on usps.com until it's in the country, and while there are a couple sites that show tracking overseas, updates are slow and relatively meaningless compared to the info we're used to from USPS/Fedex/UPS.

Wowtac A2S

Awesome!

u/ENORMOUS_VEINY_DICK · 2 pointsr/flashlight

Pretty much any single cell 18650 light will do that with the utmost ease. The best way to describe the performance of a single 18650 1000 lumen light that hasn't used one is that it's brighter than you expect it will be multiple times over.

The wowtac a2s in neutral white is a great low cost high quality light. It's a headlamp, but it can be removed from the headband for handheld use. Being able to do both is very useful.

Someone else reccomended the wowtac a1s. It's great too. Its handheld with a better user interface. Better at handheld use. I just reccomend the headlamp since it does both and you might end up using it more than you expect.

Make sure to get the verson with the s at the end, the plain a2 is a 500 lumen cheaper model and the amazon page tries to merge them for some reason.

It comes with a usb rechargeable battery, but i consider it a freebie, not something to depend on permanently in my opinion. The charger built into the battery gets kinda hot and the cell is of unknown quality and true capacity. The ones i gifted to people at Christmas are still going strong though with heavy use. You could very well just buy the light and see how the included battery does.

If you decide on a higher quality battery get an NCR18650GA and an xtar ant mc1 plus. This light needs long protected cells so that one is perfect.

In your area keep an eye out for an event called "Stop the Bleed". It is a free event that teachings how to teat medical trauma. Other than that you can go to 2nd hand book shops and look for books related to prepping topics. Other cheap suggestions.

  • LED Headlamp
    • you can find these as cheap as $7 but this is what I suggest
  • LED Flashlight
    • you can find these cheaper but that is what I suggest
  • Edible plant books for your area on amazon.
    • Usually around $10 to $20
  • Medical herbs book
    • you can find more like this on amazon
  • Ask your parents to start gardening with you or at least let you do it. Seeds are cheap.
  • Make yourself a hobo stove. There are videos on youtube on how to do it.
  • Candles.
    • Cheap stuff you can get at thrift stores and on clearance. You'll slowly learn what are good prices on them over time. Right after the holidays are the best time for these.

I've run out of time. Let me know if you have any questions.
u/Magneticitist · 2 pointsr/flashlight

That reminds me to go dumpster diving myself. I've got a coworker who goes all the time with his wife and I don't know how but they are always scoring a lot of goodies.

Anyway it seems like there are some lights out there many would skip over because of better a little more expensive alternatives, but those lights also seem to fit your needs pretty well so there may not be any need to spend the extra money. One such light is the Wowtac A2S I saw reviewed not too long ago. There's also the A2 for ten bucks cheaper but it's half as bright. It's your basic angled 18650 XP-L headlamp that comes with a battery with the built in microUSB recharging port. Again, not the best light for the price range, not the best included battery, but it sounds like you would get good use from it in an all inclusive package.

u/badon_ · 2 pointsr/flashlight

Rechargeable AA batteries exist. You don't have to choose AA batteries or rechargeable batteries. You can have both in AA batteries. The lights I always recommend are AA Zebralights, but they're above your budget. If you can stretch your budget, they are worth it, and I recommend this one:

Where possible I prefer to just buy everything online, Amazon is good and even with added shipping works out cheaper than NZ stores. Just as a very quick comparison, with little consideration of brands etc:

Walking stick: Amazon, Bivouac.

Headlamp: Amazon, Bivouac.

Up to you, but looks to me like the NZ retail industry is making a killing on mark-ups on this stuff. As they do on everything else.

u/bleedingpenis · 1 pointr/sysadmin

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0098IJC7C/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 is crazy bright - I use it mostly for biking, but find myself pulling it off the helmet to get at the back of machines often enough that I want to get another.

http://www.amazon.com/Headlamp-Brightness-Headlamps-Batteries-Included/dp/B005FEGYJC/ref=pd_sbs_hi_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=1YRP6EVYYN4XPPSA22TR works off 3-AAA batteries, which might be a selling point, and it's $6.99!

u/terceslil · 1 pointr/running

Mine has a strap that goes over my head and around my head. Both can be tightened. I have tightened it so tight that the headlight pops out of its S hooks. So there is a limit to how much I can tighten it. Link to headlight so that you can see the S hooks to the left and right of the lamp.

u/NLtbal · 1 pointr/flashlight

I am SAR in Central NL (Canada) and 3 lights come to mind:

$130 CAD - only if you already have 18650 batteries, and judging by this post, I don't think that you do.

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00REF6HK6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

AA's - recommend NiMH batts

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00QAHI4RS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Bonus headlamp with lots of flood, also single AA (fits nicely on Petzl hemlets):

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01FCUTTCW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Al 3 of these are the same brand, but I have no material connection to them. They have just been good lights for me.

For the price, convenience, and availability in Canada through Amazon, the last 2 give you a pretty awesome combination.

Where in Canada are you a SAR volunteer? Here is a link to my team in NL:

I think smaller, more frequent prices vs bigger less frequent prizes kind of depends on the intention of the giveaway.

For people who spend a lot of time on this sub, I would guess that if there was something that they want that is less expensive they would have already picked it up or just generally be less excited to win. If you’ve already got a zebralight it’s a little less exciting to win a wowtac a1. They would prefer bigger prizes.

However, if the goal is to grow the subreddit and bring people in, more frequent giveaways is a better way to accomplish that goal.

I am in the former group where I have 2 convoys, the ylp penlight and an h03 that I got on sale and modded to be pretty decent, but I haven’t taken the plunge to buy anything more than 25.00 or so.

Recently found this sub and have been lurking after ordering a D18 (for myself) and a D4V2 (for my wife)!

Given our interest in the outdoors, I think a Zebralight H53c would be a natural choice.

Thanks for making this sub what it is!

u/spaceminions · 1 pointr/flashlight

Could go for the H53c I saw someone posted. Might be neat. If it's changed price or gone by the time giveaway ends, unless I'm around on IRC best be the sc53fc or the vl300t.

Gracias!

Zebralight H53c headlamp.

Thank you for doing these!

u/Misanthropus · 1 pointr/flashlight

Thanks a ton for the giveaway, and I appreciate everything you do for the community.

There's a reason why it's one of the best, and has grown so quickly, you're contribution is substantial to that reason.

I'm sure I won't win, I don't think I've ever one a contest or a raffle-type thing in my life haha..

But, never know, I suppose... Zebralight - H53c

u/mocklogic · 1 pointr/flashlight

After stumbling down the flashlight rabbit hole because of this subreddit, I think what I could really use is a good headlamp.

A headlamp is the best option for seeing exactly what you're looking at. This headlamp is a beast and can easily be used as a regular flashlight too. The battery is rechargable with just a cable, no hub. Additionally, it has 3 regular modes, turbo mode and SOS mode just in case:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B075ZN5LJY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I see you (foolishly) don't wear a helmet, but for others that are interested; the headlamp fits under my helmet no problem

I put this red light on the back of the board just so I look more like an actual vehicle. It also has a white mode so I'm thinking about getting a second one as a "headlight" I use the quotes because I'm not certain if it's actually bright enough to light my path:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07253G165/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also grabbed these rechargable lights with a blink or solid color mode. They have a clip built in, but they also come with 2 different length canvas straps so you can attach them to an arm or backpack or just about anything:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B071X6V4S3/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
