Pasta and rice are so low in protein that it wouldn't even compare to these sources listed. Nope! I was wrong! Editing these in!

Pea protein is almost identical cost to whey.

Pea protein on Amazon is $20 for 2.2 lbs: https://www.amazon.com/BulkSupplements-Pea-Protein-Powder-Kilogram/dp/B00RPMMFWM/

Whey protein on Amazon is $24 for 2.2 lbs: https://www.amazon.com/Protein-Isolate-BulkSupplements-kilograms-Unflavored/dp/B00E7IODXQ/

The Pea is a bit cheaper, but the whey has a bit more protein content (27g vs 24g per serving).

So I'd say they're nearly identical in price.

u/Strel0k · 13 pointsr/Fitness

If you buy the 5 lb tub it comes out to $0.65 per 25g of protein

The 10 lb bag comes out to $0.62 per 25g of protein, which is a slightly better deal.

u/The_Arborealist · 13 pointsr/Fitness

It's a math error on their part. They forgot to account for the (X2) part of 1.75-pound (Pack of 2).

  1. (1.75lbsx2)=3.5lbs.

  2. 3.5x16oz=56oz

  3. $11.29/56oz=20cents/oz

Consider, too, that this is their (absrdly overpriced) Optimum Nutrition Platinum Hydrowhey that they claim is discounted by half (!)
here at .88/oz By those (unrealistic) standards the .40/oz price is still a super deal.

    Objections:

  • "It's clearly a mistake, they won't honor it."

They will. See this thread for a (now dead) similar deal

If they ship the wrong thing? (Like, say, a single container?) Amazon returns are dead easy and you might even get a gift card for your troubles if you complain to customer service.

You won't be charged until they ship so BUY NOW and think about it. You can always cancel.

  • "It doesn't ship for a really long time"

True. "Usually ships within 4 to 6 weeks." If that's an issue this might not be the deal for you.

For the record, I went in for 10 which is 35 lbs for 112$. Know of a better deal? Please tell us about it.

  • "I bet it's near expiration date"

This product was just introduced. I gotta think they are waiting on manufacture/delivery before shipment (hence the shipping delay).

If you're looking for a vegan protein powder I really like the Garden of Life ones.

This is the one I get:https://www.amazon.com/Garden-Life-Organic-Vitamins-Probiotics/dp/B007SYT7LO/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1525201950&sr=8-3&keywords=garden%2Bof%2Blife%2Bvanilla%2Bprotein&th=1

I usually do a scoop of powder, a cup of almond milk, and 140g of frozen strawberries. It's pretty tasty and ~200 cals.

u/Yatessc · 12 pointsr/proED

For a vegan powder this should work. If you have 3 and half scoops it'll be 105 gs protein and 525 calories.

You don't need protein powder at all. If you are getting enough calories there is absolutely no reason for you to be getting insufficient protein as long as you eat a variety of different foods.

However, if you happen to be an absolutely massive body builder (not an average person who is trying to bulk up, but someone who has been lifting heavy weights for years and has far exceeded the normal weight range for someone of their height due to all the muscle they have developed) who truly needs protein supplementation to maintain/increase your body mass then I have only this to say: At the end of the day your body converts all these proteins into amino acids before it is utilized for muscle protein synthesis. The body only needs 9 essential amino acids and the rest can be synthesized from those 9. All protein powders contain these same 9 essential amino acids. The particular protein powder you use is not going to have any noticeable effect on how quickly you build muscle.

You should, however be aware that animal proteins in particular have been shown to correlate to various health conditions such as kidney stones. So if you care about minimizing your risk of getting painful health conditions such as that you should probably steer clear of both whey and casein in favor of protein from rice, soy, peas, or other sources. Some protein powders even use a variety of sources such as Vega: https://www.amazon.com/Vega-Protein-Powder-Vanilla-Servings/dp/B016D9IGRA. Using protien from multiple sources does provide a more balanced amino acid profile. However, people who need protein supplementation are consuming such huge quantities of protein that they are basically gauranteed to get sufficient quantities of all their amino acids regardless of which type of powder they use.

The whey vs casein debate is purely bro-science and marketing. Nothing more.

u/anachronic · 9 pointsr/vegan

> Ideally I would like to be fully raw

Can I ask why? It's less healthy and MUCH harder to get protein and nutrients.

Just eat beans, tofu, faux meats, avocados, nuts, seeds, quinoa, etc... and you'll be fine on protein. Don't set yourself up for failure by eating some crazy restrictive diet when there's really no reason to.

Also consider getting some Plant Fusion and blending that up with a frozen banana and almond milk for an easy dose of protein.

u/viatessblog · 9 pointsr/ibs

I'm still exploring what works for me, but here's a list of what's working.

  • Very low tolerance to - spicy/hot foods, garlic, coffee if I'm backed up

  • Can tolerate very small or rare amounts of - onion, beans, dairy

  • Body can somewhat tolerate - gluten, meat although I've been plant-based for over a year

Oatmeal, rice, and potatoes are the go-to foundations of my diet. I can have a cup of tea and a serving or two of alcohol each day without much trouble, but it must be with food. My daily poop smoothie has fruit, water, 12-18 grams of this protein powder with probiotics and 3-4 grams of this green powder.

I drink 48-80 ounces of water each day, not including tea/smoothies. I usually just go with what I crave and have created a great water drinking habit over the last few months.

I take a multivitamin with iron everyday (iron for genetic anemia) and B12 twice a week in high doses, but will be lumping those pills together in a different type of multivitamin soon.

Right now I'm feeling out what beans, veggies, fruits, and other processed foods I can tolerate. My primary goal right now is to poop once a day and balance my fiber intake so everything keeps moving. Normally, if I drink a ton of water and some ginger tea in the morning I'll know everything is normal with a poop before noon.

If I didn't cover something, ask away!
u/mcchea · 8 pointsr/Fitness

This one. It's cheap, effective, and delicious.

u/IcyOrion · 8 pointsr/vegan1200isplenty

Everybody talks up vega but honestly the texture was atrocious and it overwhelmed the taste of anything I put it in. Mealy and overpriced :(

As long as you're not looking to try it on its own, I'd honestly recommend this stuff. The texture disappears very well in smoothies and oatmeal, and though the flavor is...not great, it's super easy to cover up because it isn't strong. Also? Very very very cheap, because it's not marketed specifically at vegans.

110 calories for 25g protein.

u/ImNotSara · 8 pointsr/xxfitness

You can get some reasonably priced protein powder from Amazon (e.g., this pea-based powder)

u/weezerluva369 · 8 pointsr/Fitness

Great question!

One option is to supplement with a protein shake. Here's a vegan protein shake called Vega Sport. 150 cals, 30g protein, 4g carbs (with all essential amino acids).

If you'd prefer a whole foods approach, here's some options:

  • Tofu: 90 cals, 10g protein, 2.5g carbs
  • Pretty much any soy-based food (edamame, tempeh, soy milk, etc.)
  • Seitan (vital wheat gluten): 370 cals, 75g protein, 14g carbs
  • Nuts & Seeds: typically have an equal amount of protein and carbs

If I'm bulking, I'll add in the protein shake. But when you're eating any vegetable, most of the carbs will be fibrous, and you won't absorb as much.

Just out of curiosity, why are you limiting your carb intake?
u/emnemz · 7 pointsr/Fitness

Has anyone tried the ON Natural Whey Protein? I love the ON extreme milk chocolate but I'm curious as to whether the natural version tastes the same.

u/Wondeful · 6 pointsr/fitmeals

My favorite high-protein breakfasts:

Protein shake (my favorite is Muscle Pharm banana cream - 130 cal/25g protein)

Pre-made frittata (keeps in the fridge for up to a week)

Greek yogurt with mix-ins (fruit, granola, nuts, etc.)

Boiled eggs

Pre-made frozen breakfast sandwiches (make yourself or store-bought)

Oatmeal with protein powder or PB2 mixed in

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Hope that helps.

u/Tcloud · 6 pointsr/1200isplenty

30g of vegan protein for 150cal

Vega Sport Premium Protein

u/MEatRHIT · 5 pointsr/Fitness

Personally, I like this for after a workout, taste is pretty decent and nothing extra in it. For a meal replacement I usually go with two scoops of this mixed with ~10oz of whole milk. You are using metic and Euros so I'm not sure what part of Europe you are from or where to get it cheaply, but you should be able to find these not too expensively.

u/sunchatte · 5 pointsr/xxfitness

Peanuts make a great snack in small quantities but they're probably not the greatest base source of protein. You mention eating only 1400 calories a day and wanting to replace 800+ of them with peanuts, and I think you'll find that you're having to go hungry (and drink a lot more to stay hydrated) more often than not, and if that's your only source of protein, it still won't be enough.

For reference, I'm eating between 1300-1400 calories a day and 65-90g of protein daily. I'm probably not the best example out there, but the point is that even if you eat a cup of peanuts a day (clocking in at about 862 calories with 40g of protein almost twice as much fat, which also isn't good) it's still not enough.

I don't know what country you're from, but is amazon available? Powder is expensive in large quantities, but it lasts ages. Something like this is $30USD for a tub, but that tub has 28 servings, so it should last you about a month if you were to take it every day, so that's almost 25g of protein with minimal sugar and fat for about a dollar a day.

If you don't like meat/animal products (do you like fish at all?) you could look to small amounts of grains like quinoa or oats that have some protein. Eggs are also great, and so is dairy. If you can stand to buy plain greek yogurt (you get used to the taste quickly, but if you don't like it you can add a tsp of honey or some fruit and it will keep the sugar content lower). Black beans offer 15g of protein in one cup, which is only about 230 calories with very little fat. Other beans and lentils will tend to have high protein and lower fat, with the added bonus of fiber and other nutrients. You could even have milk or plain soymilk, or cottage cheese.

u/kylekey · 5 pointsr/vegan

Also not a body builder but I do Garden of Life Meal Replacer every day, but if you're looking for just protein they've got that too.

Entirely raw, organic and sprouted protein from whole grains, beans, and seeds with fiber, probiotics and enzymes like protease, and no sugar. The meal replacer has the same amount of protein and probiotics/enzymes, but also adds complex carbs, more fiber, a tiny bit of fat, a green juice and fruit mix, and a ton of vitamins and minerals. The only downside is that there's a bit of brown rice syrup, but it's not enough to outweigh the enormous benefits.

u/AsDevilsRun · 5 pointsr/veganfitness

A lot of the ones I've tried don't mix well and are really...chalky. The most recent one I've tried and would recommend is Garden of Life Raw Protein, which is pea and rice protein.

Smoothest and best-tasting one I've tried so far, but I haven't tried it with water.

u/JMAAB · 5 pointsr/keto

I got the powder as something to put in my drink while I cycle for some energy, it was almost triple the price of the liquid I use so it took a bit to try. In 3 months I have had about 4 servings. Now it says it can be used for cooking, baking etc and I may use it for that but I had zero luck with mixing it in a drink. It is like old protein powder, shake the shit out of it and there are still clumps, I even shook once for like 5 minutes, left it in the fridge overnight to dissolve, then shook some more for good measure and nope, still clumpy. It also foamed up, a lot. It was really chalky tasting to me and pretty hard to get down. I had to really scrub the hell out of it because that thick foam left residue everywhere.

Sorry for the rant, but you did ask for strong arguments!

u/djn24 · 5 pointsr/vegan

Whey is not vegan (it's a byproduct of dairy cheese production), but there are protein powders that are vegan. Vega one has a great all purpose shake (20 g protein serving) that is like a multivitamin breakfast shake.

http://www.amazon.com/Vega-Nutritional-Shake-French-Vanilla/dp/B00R0Y0V94/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453441416&sr=8-1&keywords=vega+one

They also have post-workout shakes that have 30 g of protein per serving:

http://www.amazon.com/Vega-Performance-Protein-Powder-Vanilla/dp/B016D9IGRA/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1453441416&sr=8-10&keywords=vega+one

Peanut butter powder can add protein to anything, as well as peanut butter flavoring!

And Cliff Builder bars have 20 g of protein but a ton of sugar:

http://www.amazon.com/CLIF-BUILDERS-Protein-Chocolate-Count/dp/B000GPRZSO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453441513&sr=8-1&keywords=cliff+builder+bars

The 3 main testing agencies NSF, Informed Choice, and Informed Sport all have a search feature. I'll post links when I get to work. I work with collegiate and pro athletes and the brands we usually recommend are EAS and Cytosport (Muscle Milk) as most of theirs are tested.

edit: you can search by brand or type of supplement. note that each flavor has to get tested so a lot of companies not all flavors of their protein powder are tested
Search NSF
Search Informed Choice
Search Informed Sport

I usually go with EAS 100% Whey for protein, you can get 5-15% off with subscribe and save and I frequently see a 20% off clip on coupon with it so is usually cheaper than MyProtein unless you catch a sale there. For BCAAs I usually go with EAS again (all EAS products are NSF) though I got some from MyProtein last time since it was cheaper at the time (only the iBCAA version is tested).

u/blackesthearted · 4 pointsr/1200isplenty

I use Jarrow Iso-rich soy protein powder, unflavored. It has a smooth texture and doesn't taste like anything, so I just throw it in things when I need to: pudding, oatmeal, even some soups. Whey can be used, but in my experience there's a milk-like taste, even to the unflavored varieties, that I don't care for and haven't been able to sufficiently mask.

u/rangerpax · 4 pointsr/xxfitness

After many years of searching, Plant Fusion is my fav. Been using it for years now. It's good on its own, but I put it in coconut milk, put in a bit of cinnamon (good for you!), and whisk until frothy. No dairy, not gritty, has high protein and virtually no carbs. Comes in unflavored too.

u/NicNacAttack · 4 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

Vegan Crossfitter here whose loves her gainz:

Complex carbs are low GI, so think whole wheat bread and brown rice. Any that lists "whole <insert grain here>" is a good bet. Quinoa works, too, although not technically a grain.

It's super duper easy getting all your protein needs without dairy, and even without relying on soy. I eat a lot of nut butters (almond, peanut, cashew) and use nuts in a lot of my dishes (stir fry, salads, blended into sauces). Lentils and beans are good sources, but not my personal faves. Also, don't underestimate the protein content in foods not typically associated with protein. Examples: One serving (3 cups) of spring mix lettuce has 2g of protein; one serving cup of whole wheat pasta has 7.5g of protein. Eating a variety of plant-based foods will provide you with all essential amino acids. Gainz brah.

I also LOVE Vega Performance Protein powder (vanilla and chocolate flavors are best). A bit pricey, but high quality, soy-free. Less tasty (IMO) but cheaper and still soy-free is Plant Fusion. With either powder, I like to blend it with almond milk, ice, and maybe a few spoonfuls of peanut butter. Drink post-workout. I also use that mixture as a base for green smoothies for my morning breakfast.

Edit: correction (see strikeout)

u/mandiejackson · 4 pointsr/Vitamix

I just bought this and in the mornings (around 7 am) I blend a scoop of that, about 8 ounces west soy unsweetened soy milk, 2 big handfuls of spinach, 2 medium bananas, and a 1/2 cup frozen blueberries. Fills up a quart mason jar and keeps me going until noon.

u/Ilokanoman · 4 pointsr/gainit

I am lactose intolerant. This is your friend. Taste great and doesn't want to make me want to go kill myself after drinking it. I only drink chocolate though, all the other flavors taste like balls.

u/Read_to_Your_Kids · 4 pointsr/Supplements

A good greens blend should be able to cover any nutritional deficiencies but you'll probably want to use several servings a day.

There are so many awesome superfood powder bramds out there. Just search superfood on Amazon.

I like Amazing Grass, and Garden of Life's Raw Meal and Green Superfood. Vibrant Health is good too.

Also, One-A-Day multis are terrible. PM me if you want my recommendations.

I used to do this with the 5 lb tubs, but ON pulled their stuff from Amazons subscription program. Did they reinstate it?

Edit: Yes. Looking at the item on Amazon, it costs $105 (way more than 15% over what you're showing) and there doesn't seem to be any subscription option. How did you do this?

u/zo1d · 3 pointsr/Fitness

What do you dislike about using 2 scoops? Is it the additional calories, or value for money? Because I just compared it with 4 other random protein powders on Amazon (on the first page of results), and at current prices, you get considerably more protein per dollar than the others.

protein per serving * servings per container / price

EAS: 49.8
BSN: 26.4
MusclePharm: 32.5
MyProtein: 22.7
ON: 30.6

Edit: For the record, the place I've been buying EAS from sells it for $40/5lb bag, so I've been getting about 37.7g/$

u/lnfinity · 3 pointsr/Fitness

This protein powder has 52 grams of protein per dollar, which is cheaper than any other retail price for protein that I know of. You can probably find bulk protein from peanuts or soy for cheaper somewhere though.

Essentials

  • A great multivitamin-probably more tailored for the athletic - I take and recommend something like GNC Mega Men's Sport
  • Fish oil capsules - I currently use Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega
  • Whey Protein - Gotta love ON! The only thing I find better than their gold standard is Platinum Hydro Whey though it's pricey!
  • BCAAs, for pre/during/and post workout (mix with your protein shake!) - Again I'd go with either ON's brand or Xtend

    Optionals

  • Pre-Workout Stimulant - I don't currently use one but if I did it'd be Jack3d which has some Creatine Monohydrate with caffeine. Emphasis on the stimulant
  • Creatine - Only 2 types you should look for, and it's probably better to get the powdered versions over capsules. Recommend Prolab's Monohydrate, which is the most common/most studied one, and/or Creatine Ethyl Ester (or CEE)Which is my choice. CEE Is monohydrate with an extra ester molecule attached to help absorption. (That's why there's so many friggin' kinds of creatine out there-to help absorption-since monohydrate's rate is in the single digits at best) Recommend nothing but Primaforce's CEE. (Again, I'd go for powder over capsules)
  • Casein Protein - Take it before bed. I just trust ON's brand when it comes to protein for their good reputation but if you're happy with another brand, have at it

Chicken breast or turkey breast as a staple for one of your meals will help a lot. Chicken breast has approximately 25g protein per 4oz serving at only around 120 calories. Typically I eat double that for dinner every (or almost every) night. I also eat cottage cheese, jerky, lunch meat, string cheese, greek yogurt (Yoplait has 100 calorie greek yogurt with 14g of protein per serving). I also drink milk with dinner and that provides a little protein as well. Protein shakes can also add some substantial protein in your diet as well, such as this one (24g protein for 120 cal) or this one (30g protein/140 cal).

> I AM working on things though...just small steps

Keep it up, you can do this. I've lost almost 50lbs since April, 262 down to 215. I drank so much Mt Dew it was insane. The key for me was to count macros - I have done zero exercise. Everyone's heard of counting calories, counting macros is the next step. Calories come from fat, carbs, and protein. I used iifym.com to figure out the macros I needed to be eating to lose weight, then went from there. Now I have a double-scoop of protein powder for breakfast, a protein bar for mid-morning snack, a ton of chicken+half a cucumber+an apple for lunch, a scoop of almonds for a mid-afternoon snack, then a salad and a slab of tilapia for dinner. All that gets me around 1900 calories (40% from fat, 40% protein, 20% carbs) and I never get hungry. I use myfitnesspal to help keep track of what I eat. As for soda, I cut it out completely at first and used caffeinated Mio to help with the caffeine headaches until I discovered Vanilla Coke Zero. Now I drink that when I need a caffeinated beverage. For lunches, I meal-prep the chicken/veggies for the week on Sundays then grab my meal on my way out the door in the morning. My snacks are kept in a drawer at work, and I keep a half-gallon of almond milk in the fridge for the protein powder. Having pre-made salads has been a life-saver as well. I'd never eat a salad if I had to make it from scratch. I can change meals up as I need if I get sick of something and binging a meal or two a week on pizza or whatever hasn't affected my progress. It's been pretty easy to stick to it, and the results speak for themselves. Keep it simple, keep the healthy stuff readily available, and watch it work.

u/deltorax · 3 pointsr/bodybuilding

I really like Optimum Nutrition, particularly because it's pretty easy to mix in my Blender Bottle. Depending on the flavor, it tastes pretty good too.

u/ObeyRoastMan · 3 pointsr/Fitness

You could try carnivor, it's a beef protein isolate blend. The taste is alright, but nothing special - it makes me fart a weird amount though.

u/JustarianCeasar · 3 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

Simple and easy way to get more protein into your diet. When looking at the nutrition label, if it says "Nutrition facts" the contents have been verified by a relatively strict process. if it says "Supplement facts" the actual content is allowed to vary a lot from what's listed on the label.

If you're looking for a meal replacement, I've found that Muscle Milk brand powder works well. If you're just wanting a protein supplement, I really like the flavours of Optimum Nutrition and they're relatively low carb. If you're trying to lean more towards the vegetarian side of things, Garden of Life is an excellent option as well. Although I personally think the texture is pretty "gritty" the flavours aren't bad.

Regardless of what you choose, if you do some price comparison among top brands, you'll find it to be a fairly good deal in price/calorie compared to pre-packaged foods. Almost all of the powders are going to be a healthy option for adding to your diet. For myself, I've found protein shakes to be the best small meal replacement for when I'm trying to cut weight, and a great source for extra calories to add between each meal if I'm trying to bulk up.

I get Optimum Nutrition 5 lb Naturally Flavored Whey Powders. Short ingredient list and it doesn't break the bank too bad.
ON Naturally Flavored Chocolate

u/ssoass7 · 3 pointsr/Fitness

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard natural vanilla whey. Doesn't use any artificial flavors/sweeteners/colors and tastes pretty good, especially as part of a smoothie.

u/shadow1421 · 3 pointsr/Fitness

My mom actually can't drink anything with artificial sweeteners because they give her BAD migraines. It cost a little more than the regular ON but we buy this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00QQA0GSY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

We buy the chocolate flavor and we both love it. It's absolutely awful in water though, you have to mix it in milk every time. Also, if you BLEND it with milk (I sometimes add a tablespoon of plain sugar too) it froths the milk up and tastes exactly like a chocolate milkshake.

I've tried unflavored whey and couldn't drink it without gagging. I don't recommend it.

u/GibraltarWhite · 3 pointsr/veganfitness

Pretty much others have covered it, so I figured I'd recommend a protein powder. I really like Vega Sport Protein, 30g per scoop. Loads of other good stuff in there. I've only had the Vanilla and Berry flavors but they're both really good. I drink it right after working out, usually just blended with flax milk or soy milk that has low sugar, but I'm not trying to put on weight at the moment. People have different opinions on timing of macros but that's just when I prefer to drink it. Add peanut butter, oats, banana, berries, etc to bulk it up for weight gain.

I'd recommend googling Lex Fitness for advice, he's not vegan so some of his specific food advice won't apply but the broad concepts and science on how the body works still do. He also has great workout advice and tutorials. Work your way up, obviously, but he has an emphasis on form which is really important when you're starting out. I'd recommend watching videos from the past year or so first, the quality improved a lot compared to older videos and the info is more up to date.
Also, Lenny & Larry Cookies rock! Vegan, high protein. They always have discounts on their site too.
Get a food scale and use MyFitnessPal, helps a lot to know exactly what you're eating. I'll link to the one I use, I like it a lot. Hope this all helps!

I've tried pretty much every vegan protein powder out there, and my top favorites are Garden of Life Greens & Protein and Orgain Organic Protein-- both in chocolate. I've tried Aloha recently and was not thrilled with the flavor or texture at all, so I'd skip that brand. Vega is okay but is more expensive than the rest and is not organic, so I just crossed it out on my list.

If you need to add more protein and require a vegetarian option, I'd just suggest quinoa, beans, legumes, eggs, and nuts. I've been a vegetarian for more than half of my life, and those have always been my go-to's. But if having issues eating in general is hard, just do a double serving of protein powder a day (in a green smoothie for extra calories/nutrition) to meet those goals.

u/TheOnlyCaveat · 3 pointsr/running

I loooove the Vega Sport protein powder. I can highly recommend the vanilla flavor, the chocolate is just OK, though still definitely drinkable. It's also on sale right now, $39 down from $55.

Thanks for the reply I really enjoyed the article. I am already doing many of the things suggested in the article, but I do need to get better about pre workout snacks. I too often put off eating before a workout because I'm prepping for a big meal afterwards. I'm a big fan of http://www.amazon.com/Optimum-Nutrition-Standard-Natural-Chocolate/dp/B000GIQT06/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1323805198&sr=8-2 for shakes. Thanks again for the support.

u/askantik · 2 pointsr/WTF

My apologies if I came off as a dick-- I didn't realize you were honestly asking the question. I thought it was rhetorical (but I answered anyway, heh).

As for the protein powder, GNC probably sells way more whey protein than soy. If you're really interested in protein powder, though, here's 2lbs of soy protein powder that's way cheaper than either of the GNC links: http://www.amazon.com/Jarrow-Formulas-Iso-Rich-Soy-32/dp/B0013OQG64/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371059605&sr=8-1&keywords=soy+protein+powder

A few other things:

  1. Low-income America is rife with processed foods. Our food system and government subsidies make it so that foods like Froot Loops and Cheetos are artificially cheap and thus makes "real food" like bananas and lettuce appear more expensive. Nevertheless, canned and frozen fruits and vegetables are still affordable even on a super low budget. Vegan on a budget is not especially difficult or unheard of, for example: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0470472243 or http://www.amazon.com/Eat-Vegan-4-00-Day-Conscious/dp/1570672571

  2. There is no need to combine foods at the same meal to get all the essential amino acids in one go. This is an old myth that started in the 1980s but is not backed up by science.

  3. There is way more than 2.1g of protein in a serving of beans. Heck, even English green peas have more protein than that per serving. If you look on any can of beans (e.g., garbanzos, black beans, pintos, etc.) one serving usually has between 7-10g protein. Each can is usually ~3.5 servings (so at least 24.5g protein per can), and you can buy a 15.5oz can of cooked beans all day long for 70-80 cents.

Further, one pound of dry beans is about 12 servings. So one pound of beans has 12 servings x 8g protein = 96g protein for one pound of beans. Finally, the price you quoted is far more expensive than most canned beans, which are more expensive than bagged (dry) beans (see http://money.msn.com/saving-money-tips/post.aspx?post=0d2d3ebc-1ee5-4734-a34a-53ad26b5e3e7).

Anything from milk will also destroy my insides, so painful and not fun to be around. This is the protein powder I use and I have not had any issues.

I am also far too cheap to spring for hemp, since I tolerate soy just fine.

Happy Birthday!

I literally just opened my amazon order before reading this. I got these yoga blocks and strap. Price is awesome for 2 blocks and strap. Can't ask for more. And this 12lb double handle medicine ball. I haven't used it yet but I love how it feels. Also price is great compared to other sellers. Gonna get a yoga wheel next.

Protein powder-wise, I've only ever tried this one in chocolate and hated it. I tried it plain with just water and then tried to make a shake with banana, peanut butter, etc and I couldn't finish it for anything. Just disgusting and I'm not a picky eater. hate the texture. This is the only protein powder I've ever tried though so grain of salt and all. Hope you get some good stuff!

u/dreiter · 2 pointsr/veganfitness

It totally depends on the product. The flavored options are the priciest but are usually your best bet for flavor and texture. Something like Plant Fusion goes on sale often and has a pretty decent flavor/texture profile. If you just get a plain pea/rice blend then the flavor and texture are....quite challenging. Out of laziness and frugalness I usually buy a Plantfusion tub on sale and then mix it with an unflavored rice protein to help reduce the sweetness and cost. It's not a perfect solution but it works well enough I think.

u/ladyofathleisure · 2 pointsr/crossfit

I love Plant Fusion . It's cheaper on Amazon. There are sample packs available through their main website, though.

u/maiden_fan · 2 pointsr/sleep

Why do you think stimulants are the only way to boost your energy ? How is your diet ? If that's not ideal, nothing else is going to help.

For me drinking a good protein shake in the morning (along with some green tea powder mixed in it) helps the most. Good Protein is not a stimulant but sustains energy through out the day. That could be a start. Example products I have liked:

u/hurrayhurrayhurray · 2 pointsr/vegan

Protein smoothies control my hunger for a long time. Pea protein powder or some other combo protein powder might be something you could try. Add in some fruit and greens and maybe even ginger ale. Alternatively, Plant Fusion is also a nice brand if you don't mind stevia. The only protein smoothie powder I do not recommend is Vega. Wow, did that suck.

u/art3m1sm00n · 2 pointsr/loseit

I just recently settled on Plant Fusion after discovering I can't tolerate whey protein. Its soy, dairy, rice, etc free, has a pretty well rated purity, and has bcaas and a pretty good amino acid profile. I've tried vanilla, chocolate, and cookies and cream. I stuck with vanilla because the taste is the most easily blended with other stuff.

u/duckydoom · 2 pointsr/loseit

It tastes good and does indeed have vital nutrients. You'll lose weight if you follow their directions, but it's honestly all about portion control and tracking your food. I tried the vegan stuff for a month and it was super handy to have for my road trip to help me avoid crap foods, but I know I personally couldn't maintain it long term.

If you're just looking for occasionally supplementing meals, I recommend checking out Amazon. I buy a tub of [Plant Fusion Vanilla Bean]( PlantFusion Protein Vanilla Bean 2lb https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0021FEMZG/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_j2JGub1QP9GYC) every couple months and my husband and I both love it for on the go meals. He's on the road 80 hrs a week and it helps curb fast food stops.

u/Captinmalren · 2 pointsr/vegan

I run almost everyday for at least half an hour and also do some light weight training. I'd recommend looking into some meal replacement shakes. It's a really quick and easy way to get protein and nutrients. Mine usually consist of plant protein, powdered peanut butter, ground flaxseed, a serving of kale/spinach, a banana, and almond milk. They're great!

u/AncientApple · 2 pointsr/leangains

Comes down to $23.51 USD. Which is only 3 dollars cheaper then what Amazon has it listed as -$26.08

BSN SYNTHA-6 Protein Powder - Chocolate Milkshake, 5.0 lb (48 Servings) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002DYJ1EC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_LIjHybCNAQ0HJ

Best tasting powder brand I've had. All the flavors I've had are amazing and it's good protein. Take that and actual brewed coffee and you have a great morning. Take some cold brew mix it and toss in some ice after there's a good lunch.
Basically you pay for what you get especially with protein, and this isn't even an expensive brand. But if you go to Walmart and buy their offbrand stuff and expect good tasting and good protein you're gonna be surprised.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/P90X

This is the bare minimum for what I need when I do p90x.

  • 10 lb dumbbell
  • 20 lb dumbbell
  • 30 lb dumbbell

Over time, you can collect more and more. I now have dumbbells ranging from 5-40lbs, but I think I need to get some 50 or 60 lbs as well.

  • pull-up bar.

As for supplements, these are what I use.

Protein: Helps with recovery and building muscle.

Creatine: Generally helps with endurance/energy during exercises. I found when I began including this in my supplementation, I could usually do a few more reps, which really helps you with muscular hypotrophy, which helps you wear out your muscles more in a workout, so they breakdown and rebuild.

I also use BCAA and a fish oil supplement, but this is a good starting point.
u/iiEos · 2 pointsr/Fitness

>all I want is a little boost on my gains

Sadly there is no supplement for this, unless you count protein powder...

Honestly all you need is some plain creatine monohydrate, and solid whey protein.

If you are under 40 you don't need a pre-workout, you should have natural energy and you can just eat a piece of fruit before hitting the gym, all you are paying for in most supplements is caffeine. Granted I would say caffeine is a welcomed boost after a low sleep night.

OK, with the proviso that you shouldn't drink your calories, use sweeteners, YMMV, &tc.

I used this in combination with coffee and was totally satiated. Fifty grams of protein, 210 calories, and enough sweetness that I didn't miss not having lattes (I'm allergic to chocolate and lactose intolerant.)

To make it creamier you can add ice and nut milk, though it's not totally necessary. I would suggest using water chilled in the fridge instead of cold tap water, even if it's filtered.

There are a couple products/companies that I stand by.

  • Thorne Research
  • Pure Essence Labs LifeEssence Multivitamin - Do not take if you're on anything that interacts with grapefruit. Also very smelly, due to the seaweed. But overall PACKED with all kinds of nutrients.
  • One of the Garden of Life multivitamins, for whatever your demographic is
  • Garden of Life Raw Organic Meal - Just avoid chocolate. Vanilla is good. Contains entirely food sourced nutrients, with 20 grams of plant protein per serving.

All of these products are either plant sourced or otherwise contain the more "active" versions of the compounds, ie. Methylcobalamin (B12) over Cyanocobalamin (B12). It's still debated whether this matters for a multivitamin, but theoretically, and also from anecdotal experience, I feel that food sourced and non synthetic compounds perform better.

GNC is very middle of the road. Many multivitamins make faulty claims on the contents of the product, but GNC does less of this. I used to work there. They sell Garden of Life, however, and whenever possible I would direct customers to that brand, which makes higher quality products at a very fair price. GNC, however, is taking a very bad direction in their sales tactics and other frantic reforms in a last ditch effort to save their company from the retail bust. I would not be surprised if their products have declined in quality as well, but I quit back in April, so I don't know.
u/pitmama · 2 pointsr/loseit

My breakfast every morning is: one scoop of this delicious vegan protein powder, 8 ounces Almond Breeze chocolate almond milk, and 8 ounces of water shaken up in my blender bottle. It holds me over until lunch since the protein powder has about 17 grams of protein and tons of other good stuff in it. It's somewhat pricy, but when you think about it, it lasts me through the month, and the almond milk doesn't cost that much. It's a great breakfast for 275 calories, especially since it holds me over until lunch (no snack in between).

u/petitenouille · 2 pointsr/Supplements

I drink this quite often and it is relatively affordable, has decent vitamins/minerals and a good amount of protein. One scoop is roughly 110 cals or something so you could easily double it up for a solid meal replacement that’s still low calorie. I like the vanilla flavour and just add cacao powder if I want a chocolate variation or some PB powder. I mix it with almond milk. It’s a vegan protein so it helps for those who are sensitive to dairy as well (my partner likes it a lot as well).

I’ve heard through the keto grapevine that vegan proteins aren’t good enough sources but I haven’t really seen any solid proof for that yet, but it’s something to keep in mind.

u/lawlylawly · 2 pointsr/Fitness

I used to work at a natural/organic grocery store so I've tried a ton of different ones. They all taste pretty disgusting imo and you're not getting much protein for the money but if the ingredients are most important to you then maybe look into these ones:

Nutivia hemp

Warrior food

Garden of Life

u/Bill_Lagakos · 2 pointsr/vegetarianketo

FWIW, Labdoor ranked Garden of Life Vegan Protein Powder pretty high quality and good value.

u/2comment · 2 pointsr/Fitness

Have you tried this a brand like Optimum Nutrition?

Or you using flavored or unflavored stuff? If you're trying to go unflavored, this stuff is good too.

u/salty-lemons · 2 pointsr/InfertilityBabies

We use Naked Whey because I'm sensitive to flavor additives and we could add anything we wanted. To make a chocolate shake, you just add milk, a little water to thin, unsweetened cocoa powder, and sugar/honey/maple syrup to taste. I also like that it is supposedly made from whey from small farms humanely owned cows.

u/orchidelirium · 2 pointsr/TumblrInAction

I just looked up the price difference. A kilogram of pea protein is actually cheaper than a a kg of whey protein

u/roboisgod · 2 pointsr/veganfitness

I've been vegan 7 years and have tried all sorts of stuff. If money wasn't a problem I'd use the Vega Sport Performance protein.

To be honest, though, at this point I mostly find protein powders unnecessary. You can definitely meet your protein needs through diet and maybe only in extreme situations (body builders) would you need to supplement. This is my opinion/experience as someone who is a competitive cyclist, training 15-20+ hours a week.

That being said, what I have found to be the best bang for your buck option is pea protein. The amino profile is good and it can be had for cheap. This is what I have used in the past: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RPMMFWM?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00
100% pure pea protein and nothing else. It mixes well with just about everything, doesn't really taste like anything and doesn't have a weird texture. To give you an idea, I used to mix it into a bowl of cereal, it's that mild in texture/flavor.

u/VerySkeptikal · 2 pointsr/keto

Why would he consume so much? I don't know of anyone who recommends that much at once. If you want MCT oil with less of a GI effect, try it in powder form and use it in your coffee:

I really like this brand of powdered MCT oil. I find that it tastes great (kind of creamy) and mixes in to liquids better than regular MCT oil. I usually add it into protein shakes as well. Besides that it's not really that much of a difference. It's a little more expensive than regular MCT oil, but still not as much as Bulletproof's version of mct oil.

u/ryanmercer · 2 pointsr/ketochow

No, but I have the MCT powder. https://www.amazon.com/Quest-Nutrition-MCT-Powder-Ounce/dp/B016APVE5S it's pricey but I've been adding it to my mushroom coffee most mornings, blends well and adds no noticeable taste. No 'pissing out my ass' like oil would either.

u/learethak · 2 pointsr/soylent

None that I know of.

However, you could mix in either Powdered MCT Oil, Powdered Coconut Oil or both into you powder to meat you macros and then just mix on site with no liquid transport required.

That's my plan anyway, I have an emergency stash of Keto Chow + MCT powder at work in case I forget to make soylent that morning. (So far hasn't happened.)

I've been taking whey for years and I usually just take it by itself after a workout with water. Its been good enough so far and I haven't put much more thought into it. As far as carbs, I usually need it prior to working out than after, as it seems I need the extra energy they seem to supply me.

Anyway, I used to take the regular ON whey found here, , but have recently switched over to this natural formula of theirs. I like the natural one more because it seems to mix better with water and doesn't have that artificial taste after drinking it( from sweetners).

u/untitled1 · 1 pointr/Fitness

I'm confused too, but here's what I'm finding:

It looks like there are two kinds: "natural" and "non-natural".

The "subscribe and save" option only exists for the natural one.

The natural one has three favors (vanilla, chocolate strawberry). It's naturally flavored and has 5g of carbs.

The non-natural has like 20 flavors, and only 1g carbs (or maybe 3 grams... The description says one thing but the image of the nutrition label says something else).

They both have 24g protein and 5.5g BCAA. Natural is 130 cals and unnatural is 120 cals.

I know nothing about tastes, but the reviews seem to say both are good.

I'm not single or unemployed, but I'm frugal. My solution: drink lots of whole milk, cook eggs and frozen chicken breast, lots of beans, make my own jerky and supplement all of that with whey protein in bulk. I buy 5 lbs of Chocolate EAS Whey Protein at a time from Amazon. It's the best tasting protein powder I've ever had (I mix it with water, too!) and more importantly it's reasonably priced - about $.02/gram of protein.

I'm sure there are cheaper ways than the whey protein, but in all honestly I'm a little guy and can't eat as much as I need.

u/mysticdolphin95 · 1 pointr/1200isplenty

I use Isopure Unflavored Whey in my oatmeal; when I'm soaking it overnight and then heating it up in the morning, I just add it to the rest of the dry ingredients (~1/2 scoop with 1/3c. oats plus other nuts/seeds and 2/3c. almond milk). When I'm making hot oatmeal, I mix it with a little almond milk then stir it in at the end.

For shakes, I drink EAS Chocolate Whey, which I think is super good! I've also had lots of terrible protein shake experiences and for whatever reason I really like this one. I'll usually do a scoop in 8oz. almond milk; my husband likes using dairy milk, which is also good.

A couple powders I like to use are Rice and Soy proteins:

Pea protein is also pretty good but the texture is God-awful in my opinion. The taste isn't awesome either, but I just mix it with other stuff in small quantities to finish the container.
All three of the above are generally cheaper than whey protein. Also many whey powders are not vegetarian because of their processing methods. So look into any whey brands you might get.

To help put on weight I like to add finely ground oats to my shakes. To grind them I just use a coffee grinder, but if you have a blender with a flat blade that should do the same. Oats are a great way to add complex carbs to your shake, and carbs are essential in putting on weight.

My weight gain shakes generally consist of a 2 cups of milk (depending if you are lacto-veg or not), a banana (chilled in the fridge for texture/temp), 2ish Tbsp Peanut butter, half cup of ground oats, 3-5 frozen strawberries, 2 servings of protein (mixed kinds but about 50ish g of protein), and a few grams of creatine.

These are shakes that help put on mass, and I drink them after getting home from the gym. If you aren't doing heavy lifting then these are probably too much, but its just an example. I recommend adding a few fruits to your shakes as it really improves the flavor.
Also to help put on mass I like to try and throw some fruit (usually a banana or apple) and a big glass of milk right before getting ready for bed

If anyone sees any issues or has some constructive criticism Id be glad to hear it, just thought Id give my two cents.

There is a considerable difference in the types of proteins used.

I was only using Whey at first and my weight plateaued after 6 months losing 70 lbs total.

In October I switched from Whey + oils to Soy + flax and I am now taking less protein over all and staying full. I have also lost an additional 10 lbs since then. At this rate I plan to review macros after I lose another 25 lbs putting me around 140 lbs.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013OQG64?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

u/Chullachaqui · 1 pointr/bjj

I haven't been doing BJJ that long, but I did Muay Thai for a good while while on a vegan diet. The key is to get a lot of protein and to get it from a lot of different sources. Animal protein is "complete" protein (contains sufficient quantities of every single one of the amino acids that your body needs) while plant protein tends to be deficient in one amino acid or the other. However, if you combine different foods (rice and beans, etc) then you can get a complete mix of amino acids without a problem. For me, it's really that simple. Eat a lot of good, high-protein stuff (lentils, chickpeas, quinoa, rice, peanut butter, almonds, whatever) and eat a wide variety of things throughout the day.

Also, to supplement, try this and this. I mix a scoop of each of those with some soymilk and water and it makes me feel awesome.

Edit: fucked up the links

I have heard/read multiple times that you should try to consume about 1g of protein for every lb of body weight on average. There are a number of resources like : http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/bbprotein.htm which will give you grams of protein per body weight for other goals as well.

So for you at 92kg (about 200lb) you should try to get about 200g of protein a day, mostly from complete meals with powder etc thrown in.

Also read about the different powders on forums like bodybuilding.com, mensfitness.com etc. as well as the nutritional labels of the powder itself. I say this because if you compare 100% Gold Standard Whey ON to Syntha-6 BSN you will see that the serving size is different, 30g scoop ON to 47g scoop BSN but also the protein mix is different.

Currently I use an ON like protein that provides about 20g of protein per 30g scoop of powder and take it about 3x a day (1scoop @ in breakfast shake, 30-40min before workout w/ water, in the afternoon w/water)

u/aggie_moose · 1 pointr/ketochow

Thank you! I followed that link and learned that it's sulfur-containing amino acids (cystine and methionine) that you need 2 grams per day of, not elemental sulfur! And here I was about to buy a ton of MSM from amazon to get my sulfur intake up.

So my follow-up question would be whether all brands of whey protein have a similar ratio of total protein to SSA? (For example this one makes no mention of SSAs so is there a chance that doing a 100% keto chow diet using it will make me drop dead in 2 weeks from a sulfur deficiency?)

u/hugh_jascaulk · 1 pointr/Fitness

Unless you have a certain allergy, it doesn't really matter. Go on amazon and find a brand with high reviews and pick a flavor you like. Some lifters swear by some brands, others can be brand agnostic. Some powders have slightly different macros but by then it's personal preference. I've been using protein below as I enjoy the flavor

http://www.amazon.com/BSN-SYNTHA-6-Protein-Powder-Chocolate/dp/B002DYJ1EC/ref=sr_1_4_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1465262996&sr=8-4&keywords=protein

Thanks for the reply, I do have a shaker bottle, one I use for my protein powder. Do homemade shakes last very long in the fridge if you pre-make them?

Currently, this is what I am taking:

Good amount of protein, and calories, not so much on the cards however.

I'm about to pick up my second go around of protein and with that "study" that was talking about what's in proteins I'm a little concerned. It seemed like Jym protein is the "best" in terms of knowing what's in it. However, it's a little more expensive and since I'm a beginner, I figured that a cheaper protein wouldn't be terrible.

So, I originally decided on ON hydrowhey and Cellucor Casein.

My goal is to start sort of lean bulking but more focused on the bulk part of that. So, what got me kind of confused then was in that thread talking about the different types of protein MyProtein was mentioned where I can get 11lbs for $60. So I can get over double the amount of protein (my casein and whey) for the same price as one tub of Whey.

Is that too good to be true? What's the consensus on MyProtein?

Lastly, do I need BCAA if I'm on a bulk?

Oh that's a landslide for chicken. It's one of the reasons for why it's one of the go-to means for bodybuilders. 113g tofu has about 11g protein. 113g chicken has 26g protein. Calorie wise that same amount of tofu/chicken is 103/124 respectively. But if you want to maximise your protein intake and minimise your calorie intake, then why not consume pure, microfiltered whey protein powder? The unsweetened stuff like this has 105 calories for 25g of protein.

But look at the price. It's infinitely more expensive. Portion, wise, though, you get 14 servings. So roughly $1 a portion. Whilst the tofu would be ¢45 at the lowest, ¢70 at the highest. A chicken breast you can get maybe two portions out of it. I don't know what it goes for off the top of my head though.

best one probably is the optimum nutrition gold standard I've tasted. I currently take musclepharm combat protein as it is a bit cheaper, but it can be sweet. I also mix half of it with kirkland vanilla soymilk to give it better taste and it has a good amount of protein in it as well.

What I like about the whey protein is that it has the ability to help me recover faster after an episode. This one I take, it has fast and slow digestion:

Two weeks ago, I bought a 2lb container of Pure Protein Vanilla whey powder for around $16. I've used Optimum Nutrition before, but it's nearly twice the price of Pure Protein. I understand that Optimum Nutrition's whey is obviously of a higher quality, but is it truly worth twice the price of Pure Protein? The Pure Protein one tastes absolutely delicious and does have 25g of protein in 150 calories (so 100 calories come from protein).

tl;dr: is Optimum Nutrition whey worth twice the price of Pure Protein's?

One breakfast/recovery smoothie I love to have when I wake up or after the gym is as follows:

  • 1 cup of unflavored almond milk (no sugar)
  • 1 scoop of Naked Whey (or Optimum Nutrition, Vega One, whatever your preferred protein powder source is)
  • One heaping spoonful of peanut butter (freshly squeezed from your local grocery store, may need to go to a higher end place to find the stuff that has 0g sugar)
  • Couple spoonfuls of oatmeal
  • Handful of berries
  • Half a banana
  • Dash of cinnamon for flavor

Its a sustainable, tasty daily smoothie that is low in sugar (only sugar is from berries and bananas if you source the rest of the ingredients correctly), high in protein (~30g+), has a small amount of good carbs and healthy fats (oats and peanut butter).

Protein shake smoothie: milk, frozen fruit, chocolate chips, protein shake, and if you want to make it extra dense: melt some coconut oil and add that right before blending. Eat it over 1/2 hour or so.

Incidentally, coconut oil is a fat that generally helps for acid reflux, and doesn't give you as much of the lethargic feeling. You can mix coconut oil in anything sweet, and it makes chicken/pork taste amazing. Any time you could use butter, mayo, vegetable oil, or melted cream cheese, you can replace with coconut oil.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SCO8AA8

0g fat, 0g carbs for 25g protein.

These aren't flavored or sweetened in any way so you have to learn to deal with that but they work and it's totally doable to have real effective decently cheap protein powder to help supplement.

Turkey in the US in the off season(aka not fall) tends to be reasonably cheap but only if you do the cooking and teardown yourself. You can get a lot of meat for cheap and some of it is quite lean. Take a look at picking up a frozen turkey breast and seeing if you can cook it yourself.

Honestly, and this is just me being 100% straight up, sink the extra money into chicken breast. I know. I know, but pound for pound it is really hard to get those macros any other way and you absolutely can cut the cost by mixing in smaller amounts of chicken thighs or legs with your chicken breast to offset but you need to calculate that when you're doing meal prep.

This is how I do it if I need to make 2 weeks worth of chicken stretch a bit more. Is it harder on my fats and a drop in protein? Yes, but it's still 70% there instead of 0% there.

I ordered this pea protein. It's highly rated on Amazon, and it's exactly what it says it is. In small print, I believe the company indicates that their items are sourced from China.

I tend to make my own Soylent inspired by 2.0, and I use this pea protein, soy milk, chocolate powder, applesauce, ground flax, and xantham gum as the base. I'm on my second kg. of the bag, and no problems with it at all. It's half the price of the other ones.

I understand why most manufactured items are cheaper made in China. For dried peas, though, I find it puzzling.

I would suggest buying this for your pre-workout. I can tolerate 2x as much when it's powdered mct vs liquid...

A couple of questions:

Has anyone flown with KetoChow? Even assuming that it's in the checked luggage, I'm not sure what TSA would think of traveling with powders.

Has anyone tried powdered oils? I ran across Quest's powdered MCT and Coconut oils, and the idea of not needing refrigerated cream would make making ketochow easier in the office.

If you want to hit the sweet spot in a ketogenic diet, you should be getting about 70% of your calories from fat and 20+% from protein. That is a TON of fat... between keto-induced appetite suppression and the realities of Western food culture, I have to get super creative to keep my calorie intake high enough to support my workout regimen and my fat calories at around 70%. Products like this coffee are major tools. Another one I really like is the Quest Powdered MCT Oil product. Between that and the coffee I probably mark up about 1,000 fat calories a day.

That reminds me, I should do a post on BCAAs and exogenous ketones! :)

I think your assumption starts from the wrong angle.

I wanted to try meal replacement shakes, since I was eating very poorly and couldn't stay consistent. I reached out to a few friends, one of which had been doing Herbalife for 4 years. He is extremely fit, and has a number of people in his organization who are fit or became fit. I think my brevity in my initial reply has contributed the most to this miscommunication.

Some people are selling Herbalife, and doing it in an evil way in the process. There has been a few scandal in that regard, and those involved usually get expelled from the company pretty quick. Also, Herbalife recently updated their return policy so that victims can get most or all of their money back. None of the people I have met or worked with follow that kind of procedure, and specifically advise against "toxic volume", or the act of selling to people who don't want it.

I am open to new things, and if you have something better to offer, I am willing to listen. There are a number of products in the Herbalife catalog I buy elsewhere; usually for price, but sometimes for taste/texture, and once in a blue moon for nutrition. You'll have trouble beating convenience though, they ship straight to my house ;)

I'm not gonna make my million growing my business, so in that regard I'm not sold. I signed up as a seller to get the discount, and got 3 promotions based on volume I bought for myself (and have since consumed). I have switched away to other products when it was in my best interest (eg. Vega Protein Powder and Quest Protein Bars ), I don't sell for or represent either of those companies.

And if it really was about dollars spent, then I am seriously owed an Oreo Life Coach :/

Thank you!

I'm not a vegan I just try not to eat Dairy as i'm lactose intolerant (so whey doesn't work well for me, which is why I have a vegan protein powder). Also I noticed that whey protein gives me cystic acne as well.

Here's the protein powder I take the comments said it contains lead and arsenic.

Hey thanks! I contacted Vega site and they told me that this https://www.amazon.com/Vega-Protein-Powder-Vanilla-Servings/dp/B016D9IGRA/ is also suitable for my needs. Have you tried it?

u/JStyLeZ29 · 0 pointsr/Fitness

Not working for me. Tried purchasing the 'Natural' version of ON. http://www.amazon.com/Optimum-Nutrition-100-Chocolate-powder/dp/B000GIQT06/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t

Is it over already?

Two eggs contain 12g protein. At $2 per dozen eggs, that's <144g protein for $2. Or 3,600g for $50. If OP needs to eat a dozen per day (~144g protein) assuming the other protein comes from something else, that costs $14 per week.

For $50 you can also buy four lbs of Casein protein powder. This amounts to only about 1,350g of protein. And he'd still need to buy milk...

So eggs are much cheaper (at $2/dozen).

I wouldn't eat 12 eggs per day, though. Sounds unhealthy.

_____
From another comment: 5 lbs of whey protein powder for $45. This amounts to around 4,250g of protein for $50. So that's cheaper than eggs.

OPTIMUM NUTRITION Instantized BCAA 5000 Powder, Unflavored
or
OPTIMUM NUTRITION Instantized Bcaa Powder, Fruit Punch

BCAAs help muscle recovery and add very few calories, it tends to give you an energy boost as well. My wife prefers the unflavoured one mixed with fresh lemon juice. I'll take a scoop or two of the second one in my first liter of water of the day. They're also good for while you work out.

When working out I also like Optimum Nutrition Natural Amino Energy Naturally Flavoured as it also has caffeine.

I'm no good at it, and haven't ever successfully got into the habit, but from reading about it, paying attention to your macro nutrients is also very important. Personally for me, to break any current plateaus it's my next step.

Check your history, good on ya for what you've already accomplished!

I have the pure, unflavored BCAA. The calories are negligible (but the down side is it tastes like a mix between sucking on a penny and chewing an advil tablet).

And i know there is no magical BCAA number, but I have been reading recently that some people claim it helps preserve muscle mass in a deficit. I was trying to hash it out with my buddy who is PhD candidate and chemistry and his understanding leans towards that too.

Basically the way I understand it is BCAA are the essential amino acids your body cannot synthesize on its own and so it gets them from what you eat. However, if say you need 180 grams of protein and day and you run a deficit but eat 180 grams of protein, your body is going to take some of that protein and convert it to energy to make up for the deficit. Therefore, your muscles are only getting say... 150 grams of protein. Your body needs BCAA to function so it breaks down your own muscle to make up the different. By ingesting pure BCAA you keep it in your body so that your body does not need to break down muscle to convert it into BCAA and thus you preserve more muscle mass.

I know the feeling. Be careful about eating too much protein (it'll convert to glucose and potentially knock you out of ketosis). My understanding is 0.2grams / lbs for maintenance, up to 1g / lbs for muscle growth.

That said, I started keto three weeks ago as an experiment and I realized my protein intake was declining. So I use this protein powder: https://www.amazon.com/Optimum-Nutrition-Standard-Vanilla-Flavored/dp/B003KD8B14

And I add it to the famous Joe Rogan "Hulk Loads" shake (minus the pear, I add only a small handful of berries). The protein powder is delicious but the overall shake tastes gross and the consistency is awful. So, there's that :)
