SImon Menner: Top Secret: Pictures from the Archives of the East German STASI: Bilder aus den Archiven der Staatssicherheit https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/3775736204/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_OmiNyb3PAC2R3

'Berlin-based artist Simon Menner spent two years researching the files of the Federal Commisioner for the Stasi Archives of the former GDR to unearth the photographs he has gathered for this dark but unavoidably comic volume. Menner's collection focuses on images pulled from manuals dealing with espionage tradecraft, as well as actuals photos from surveillance operations.--Albert Mobilio "Bookforum "'

> It's a shame how nothing lasts

Especially the Cliff House. It's burned down like three times.

I for one find it pretty poetic that the symbol of the city is the phoenix (and has been since before the 1906 earthquake) and things around here seem to burn down all the time.

(I mean, yes, any large city is going to have its share of fire disasters, but we're not that large. Course perhaps that density is the problem.... I don't know. shrug)

I own and live in my own little Manitoba ghost town and always find such things interesting. Just the other day bought Abandoned Manitoba, excellent new book on this very theme.

Pittsburgh Drinks

Not directly about prohibition but it covers that a bit, and talks about cocktail recipes.

...had to wait until I got home....

But anyway, we are both correct. Family does own the copyright, but not the family of Che, instead it is the photographers daughter, not the photographer. I saw the story a couple years back and mis-remembered it. Couple of interesting things about it.. when the photo was taken, Cuba didnt recognize copyright, so it wasnt until they joined the WTO that anyone could claim it, and it ended up with the photographers daughter. There is also a book about the photograph that traces its history and significance.

Looks like it was copied and pasted from here. If you like that kind of stuff, Harry Kyriakodis has written a couple of history books about Philadelphia that go into some depth about things like this. I originally suspected this excerpt was from Philadelphia's Lost Waterfront.

Talking Pictures by Ransom Riggs looks great. He wrote one of my favorite books Miss Peregrines School for Peculiar Children and has done some amazing research to get the pictures. So actually I recommend you get that book (the school for peculiar children) instead, but I already own it, this I linked you this haha.

For those of us who were on the web relatively early on, the conversion of the high line from a blight to a treasure was amazing. If it weren't for urban explorers and folks like Joel Sternfeld releasing photo essays of the high line, this never would have happened. This was one of the first cases where social media played a serious role in making something worthwhile and tangible happen. People from around the world were writing NY politicians to let them know what a great idea this was.
