This one as been in my amazon "saved for later" list ever since my nephew was born. He's got pretty decent at the slot car track I have in my living room... you know, for when he comes over and stuff... Which reminds me I still need to order some laser sensors so I can build us a lap timer...

Pro-tip: if you have siblings let them make all the grandchildren.

Just like /u/whoknowswho2 said, it's bottom grade. The company is called New Bright and they are basically the cheap, Chinese company that makes tons of these and they are fun, but they have no ability to upgrade. My kids have 2 and they are generally speaking ok toys. The antenna tubes are annoying as I see you also have the antenna missing much like my kids.

If you can get $100 together, get a cheap ECX kit off amazon. This one my buddy has and it is a blast to drive, has 4wd and lots of spare parts. Dont be discouraged by your purchase, have fun, but if you want something to tweak and upgrade, look elsewhere.

Ideally, you’d want to save up a little bit. But here are some low buck recommendations that include everything you need (radio, batteries, charger).

It's just called a Remote Control car. Technically speaking, it's a hobby-grade RC car. You can throw away ridiculous amounts of money on these cars (upwards of $1,000), but the ones in the gif are probably around $500-700 dollars stock, and you can get one (not as fast) for as low as $200, like the Traxxas Slash. You'll still need batteries and a charger though.

Try DNA toys. One of our heelers will only play with the DNA toys-we keep extras in a drawer in case his brother tears one up. Our other heeler will chase tennis balls all day long, and she loves to get after my Rustler in the back yard.

There are other 4WD bushless SCTs for less than $450, but they may not be as "name brand" and won't have the parts support.

4WD ECX Torment- Brushed, but only $240. I have nothing but good things to say about mine

Tower Hobbies Cutback-$250, but all the reviews are negative

Redcat Blackout http://www.amazon.com/Redcat-Racing-Brushless-Waterproof-Electronics/dp/B00VRNR9O4/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1458480168&sr=8-7&keywords=redcat+blackout - $217. Redcat is a cheaper brand, but the parts are pretty easy to find online.

Hobbyking Trooper- https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=67795 Not a bad truck I'm told, but you can only get parts from Hobbyking and they are often out of stock.

You probably need a 1/10 scale or a 1/12 scale if you want to do any grass-type driving. Monster trucks have the best clearance.

To save on money, you'll probably want a 2wd vehicle, which will put you in the market for anything around $100-$200 new. Don't be afraid to buy used, especially if they package chargers and batteries in for a low price. Just don't go buying overpriced used traxxas trucks, I've seen a truck that goes for ~4-500 new up for sale on craigslist for $800+ because of "upgrades." It's not worth it, especially for a child.

If you have amazon prime, Redcat Racing is a (relatively) cheap R/C car, and it has great parts availability (2 day shipping on everything, as far as I can tell. Great for minimizing downtime if something breaks.) If you're not interested in modding it, it should be fine. Just realize that since it's a cheaper brand, there might be some... abnormalities.

For transparency, here is an amazon review on the 1/10 scale Redcat Blackout short-course truck. In general, the short course truck doesn't have the best clearance, but excels in handling. I would still recommend a monster truck, especially if you plan on running in grass. Redcat has a monstertruck, the Volcano, for $140. They also have a 1/18 scale version, and allegedly they do alright on grass, but I'm not certain.

To sum up, Redcat has some cheap trucks that are of better quality than toy grade, and probably the lowest prices out there. Of course, other Hobby Grade R/C cars will be of even better quality. I highly recommend a 1/10 scale or 1/12 scale toy car, but you could probably make do with a 1/18 scale, so long as it is a monster truck with good ground clearance.

P.S. You will probably be buying an extra battery and/or replacement charger, because what comes with these RTR kits is kinda trash. You can get something like this for <$20 to charge your batteries, just make sure it is made to take your battery chemistry. Or you can get a multiple-battery-chemistry charger, and not worry about it, but they cost you at least double the price. Again, do some research on battery chemistry, performance, safety, and charger price before buying them. I personally trust Duratrax Onyx chargers, but if you're getting a cheap charger you can obviously go off-brand. The specific charger I use is the Onyx 235, which can handle NiMH, NiCD, LiPO, and (IIRC) LiFE batteries with no problems.

ECX Ruckus 1/18th scale is hobby grade and a blast. If you break anything, you should be able to get parts from Horizon Hobby or order them through your local hobby shop.

u/bweech · 2 pointsr/rccars

First off, let me say I do NOT have any personal experience with ECX, so I'll defer to others posting here on the quality, repairability, etc.

I did notice Amazon has an ECX Ruckus at your $100 price point. It is 1/18 scale versus your existing 1/12 scale, so will be a little smaller. https://www.amazon.com/ECX-Ruckus-4WD-Monster-Truck/dp/B00FAOM4GY

u/dubman42 · 2 pointsr/rccars

I would really suggest two cars. I have two boys and 1 car between the three of us got old real quick.

I would suggest a Traxxas XL5 or Traxxas VXL. I have one of each and it works well for us.

u/Rymesis · 2 pointsr/rccars
u/Sudzy1225 · 2 pointsr/rccars

all you really need is one of these and a go-pro. the newer ones will stream right to any device with the app, within bluetooth range.

u/mfinn999 · 1 pointr/RCClassifieds

You are not going to get a 1:10 scale car capable of 20 MPH for $60. If you are OK with a smaller vehicle, there are some 1:18 scale on Amazon for near that price. These will NOT be happy in grass, so keep it in the dirt. Also, if you break anything, finding a replacement part will be very tough. IF it's at all possible, saving up for something like the Rustler ($160) will be much more rewarding:

u/Baconstr1ps · 1 pointr/rccars

Would something like this be OK? https://www.amazon.com/Traxxas-Scale-Rustler-Stadium-Blue/dp/B07DFXQM9S

Seems there's a few models that get more expensive, with a big difference being 2WD vs 4WD

Would this be a good start? Rustler 4X4: 1/10-scale 4WD Stadium Truck https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JZKJQT5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_iblNDb0AJMBQ3

u/nitrous_nit · 1 pointr/rccars

Something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/ECX-Ruckus-4WD-Monster-Truck/dp/B00FAOM4GY

I am reading to go brushless, with my budget, say less than $300, and requirements, is that possible?

u/MaxeMouse · 1 pointr/rccars

Amazon link to the 18th scale

This option is smaller than the 10 scale ones. It may have some difficulty getting through a yard of 2 inch grass, but it will work well on fine grass like the stuff at golf courses and certainly on dirt.

u/TheZebraCorn · 1 pointr/Greyhounds

This one!
It was pretty cheap as far as off roading RC cars go. Only problem with it is that it advertised “30+mph” but really they meant 30kmh so it’s significantly slower than what I wanted. Also it’s durable but not THAT durable so I usually have my girl wear her basket muzzle when playing with it just so she can’t bite and damage it.

u/mini-z1994 · 1 pointr/rccars

Worth looking at used rc cars from traxxas & similar as well on the 2wd side.

If you want a kind of toy that can run in the backyard & do some crawling you can look at this https://www.amazon.com/danchee-Hunter-Remote-Control-Crawler/dp/B01JF1VR10
do get the rechargable battery for it though linked below or a 2s lipo if you don't mind modifying it a bit as the tamiya connector is unfortunately reversed polarity on this on both the battery holder & this battery compared too standard connectors & batteries used anywhere else.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KP9Q626/

There is also this semi hobby grade crawler from wltoys which you should be able too spot in walmart as well if you happen too live in the US where its called something different but is the same design & around the same price.

https://www.gearbest.com/r-c-cars/pp_009439843866.html?lkid=41552715

walmart variant
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Adventure-Force-Rock-Runner-High-Speed-Vehicle-Black-Blue/328559630

they apparently sold quite well these crawlers.

If you want something a bit faster though that is quite tough i'd recommend this hbx monster truck (it is sold on sites like banggood, ebay, amazon etc as well so take your pick there.)
It does have a slow mode on the transmitter so that battery will last longer (i believe it was around 25 minutes.)
& ofc will hold up fine too a 6 year olds punishments, short of dunking the entire car in the bathtub or a swimming pool or getting it run over by a fullsize car.
There is videos of this on youtube where they take it too a skatepark & bash it & besides needing too pop a part back into place it held up fine.

There are some many variables there. For a few hundred dollars, which would be very cheap in this hobby, you can get up and running. This thing will be much stronger in most areas than the cheap crap, but still is not indestructible. On the flip side, replacing $5,10,15 parts can spur a potential engineering mind or creative side in your kid. You need to disassemble, fix and reassemble which can be a good lesson on its own. The cheap stuff just breaks and you're SOL. Hobby grade stuff is fixable.
