You are going to paint absolutely everything, including the vaulted ceiling. Because it stinks to high heaven. Where does the smoke go? Up to the ceiling. You can't avoid this.

Plus you will be removing the carpet, and the pad, because it stinks too. This step is also non-negotiable. The condo has to be stripped down to hard surfaces only.

Then you will paint every inch of the walls and ceiling in B-I-N shellac primer:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-5-gal-B-I-N-Shellac-Based-White-Interior-Primer-and-Sealer-00900/202524185

You may also have to paint the inside of all the HVAC ductwork. Fingers crossed on that one.

You will have to deodorize all the cabinetry. I recommend priming the interiors, as it is easier and better for the new condo dweller. Nothing pisses off a resident more than opening up a vanity or towel storage, and everything smells like smoke. Same for the pantry, unless you like your food with a dash of nicotine.

After everything is painted and deodorized to the best of your ability, it will still smell. That is when you use ozone:

Hopefully, this will get you a condo you can live in.

Get an ozone generator, turn it on, and leave the house:

Does a great job of odor removal. May have to move it around a few times, but they do work quite well.

Get an Ozone generator from Amazon. Fill that unit with Ozone for 24 hours. Ventilate.

Ozone works great.

The top three results at that link (at least for me) are air purifiers with toggleable ozone generators built-in. I own this, it's a filtered ionizer with an ozone function.

  1. Get a steam cleaning company out to do the carpets again.
  2. Get an Ozone Generator. Stick it in the room with a box fan. Keep the window and door closed. Jam a towel under the door. Run that this for half a day, then ventilate room. Repeat if stink remains.

Warning: Ozone is harmful to breathe. Room needs to be completely uninhabited by plants and animals and should be thoroughly ventilated afterwards.

100%!
I bought this one on Amazon and have used it in 3 cars now. One of them was for my 16 year old and was really dirty and smelly so it took 2 treatments but it smells so clean now! Takes a week or so for ozone smell (which smells clean) to wear off leaving NO smell.

Also inherited some tools and the soft tool bags smelled like smoke (really strong). Put them in a big container with the ozonator and good as new.

That one I have and it works very well. It has a two hour timer. I would set it before I would go to work and let it dissipate the rest of the day. You cannot be in the house with it running.

also frebreze wall plugins work great too afterward.

In looking at Amazon, it seems that this one by Enerzen, nearly the same price, is also highly recommended.

An ozone machine will help to get rid of the scent and kill the mold, if you get a good one (about a hundred bucks on amazon) just let it run With the car closed for a day or two. Then throw on a mask and wipe up the mold the best you can. Then ozonate it again.

This one should be sufficient

Best thing to do is clean everything thoroughly with an All purpose cleaner. Meguairs D101, 3D Orange Degreaser, Optimum Power Clean bunch of others to pick as well just these come to mind. After do 2+ hours of a ozone machine Amazon Ozone. I use it for my business and its works great. For the last 30 or 15 minutes (Or if you think it's really bad turn AC on at the start) turn the car on and turn on the AC and circulate to flush the AC system. Once its done open the doors for 15 minutes letting it air out.

Hamilton Beach TrueAir Room Odor Eliminator by Hamilton Beach http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002SHCEVG/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_Rdc2tb1NSS706

u/mrjizzles · 4 pointsr/fragrance

You can ozone the room and it will permanently eliminate the fragrance molecules from everything in your room/house by chemical magic -- it switches Oxygen (O2) to O3 -- which rips the bonds that cause fragrances/odors.

This is easy to fix and will cost only about $70, but the device will last for nearly a lifetime. I highly recommend it for all sorts of uses. It can be used in cars, too. Public spaces such as office buildings, retail spaces, cinemas, restaurants, and hotels use these all the time to keep everything smelling clean. Keep your closets and drawers open while doing this so your clothes and shoes get freshened, too.

Another option for removing solvents is an ozone generator. The ozone will react with any remaining organic compounds. Close the house off. Turn on the generator to high. Use fans to circulate and let it run for a day or two.

Just don't be in the house when it is running! The ozone could actually create compounds more dangerous than the original solvent.

Afterwords, open the windows and vent the house for another day or two.

Here is a simple ozone generator. Don't get a fancy one. Keep it simple. Just over $100.

http://www.amazon.com/Living-Fresh-Ionizer-Cleaner-Purifier/dp/B004FGNTYE/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1382369564

u/chibichn · 4 pointsr/Outlier

I've never done this with clothes, but you might consider trying an ozone generator as they basically neutralize any smells. The downside is that you'd have to invest in some mildly expensive equipment. I have an Enerzen model I bought off Amazon and it works great.

u/mfinn · 4 pointsr/Hunting

Next time you can invest in a 75.00 ozone generator. Put it in the running car, turn it on for 25 minutes and run the AC on recirculate.

It will eliminate ANY smell in that car. Cigarettes smoke, deer blood, musk gland stink, dead hooker smells in the trunk, you name it. Just stay out of the car for a couple of hours until the ozone itself dissipates since it's terrible for your lungs.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JAP7388/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=1944687762&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B007GS5L08&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=04MP7FVC1R1FRY8RZPCR

This is the one I own.

It's also amazing for scent control. I don't even bother with cover smells any more. Just ozone my stuff the night before and leave it in a rubbermade bin.

u/chrisbrl88 · 4 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Candles don't neutralize odor. If anything, they make things worse by putting soot into the air. This would be a job for an ozone generator. The things are like magic.

u/Tack122 · 3 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Industrial. To be clear, there could be a hazard if you tried to occupy the area while using it, but the instructions are quite clear on not being near it during and after operation.

This is the one I bought, quite well reviewed. https://www.amazon.com/Enerzen-Commercial-Industrial-Deodorizer-Sterilizer/dp/B01M7VOSH1/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1511498683&sr=1-1&keywords=ozone+generator

u/Call_My_Lawyer · 3 pointsr/AutoDetailing

You can buy a decent one on amazon for under $100. Most shops I've seen around that actually offer ozone treatment charge $60 for one treatment and $100 for unlimited. I decided it was a good excuse to buy another tool. I bought this one in November and have used it several times. It works well and has already paid for itself a few times over. It sucks that you cant do much work on the car while its running, but it works for the jobs you need it.

u/iWoNeVeRyThInG · 3 pointsr/sales

Not sure where you live, but you can ask a place that does detail if they have ozone cleaning. Orrrrr you can buy a small machine from amazon. I have one, take about 24 hours but the smell does go away. Most of the machines on amazon have details on how to use, its white simple and very effective.

Considering you buy and sell cars on Craigslist, this could be a valuable for you.

Edit. Something like this, this is the one I have.

Maybe something along the lines such as this? We run the bigger can style carbon filters in our shipping area for all the vaping that goes down in our lab. Carbon filters are excellent at removing smells. We don't run this model though, but it does utilize carbon filters.

u/VennC · 3 pointsr/Landlord

If the place has central air/heat, get the vents cleaned and deodorized (~$200 depending on the size). If you haven't already you can paint as well, this usually makes a huge difference.

If it really bothers you, you can also rent/purchase an ozone generator. Make sure no one is home if you end up using this, typically 1 hour treatments per area are sufficient for most odors.

The box fan trick works great but it's important to note that only the expensive filters will remove smoke. The cheap filters won't do much of anything. There's three different rating systems depending on brand and it's hard to compare them with each other since they mean different things. In general though, look for a minimum of FPR 7, MPR 1000, or MERV 11. The higher the number the better.

Ionizers are a great way to remove smoke too, but you have to make sure you get one that doesn't produce ozone since that's pretty toxic. Industrial ionizers should be avoided.

I have two of these and they work great.
https://www.amazon.com/Envion-Ionic-Pro-Turbo-Purifier/dp/B000H0RZB0

This is the compact version:

This one is very small and has good ratings.
https://www.amazon.com/IonPacific-ionbox-Negative-Generator-Highest/dp/B01F2P6LV4

And one for your car that runs off the lighter socket. There's a bunch that look like this but the FRiEQ brand has the best reviews from what I've seen.
Note: It will only help if you keep your windows up and don't have "fresh" air coming in through the air system. It'll have to be set to recirculate for this to do any good.

"ozone generators remove odors by producing large/concentrated amounts of O3 (ozone) which oxidize and break down residual odor compounds in the surrounding air. Because the O3 is so highly concentrated, it is recommended that rooms be unoccupied during treatment. Once the air treatment is finished though, the O3 quickly converts back into O2 (oxygen) and the room is left with a "fresh air" smell."

u/nileo2005 · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Second the ozone machine. Get an industrial unit like this, not a crappy tower air purifier with ozone deal. Shut this in a room on high for 24 hours, turn it off, open a window to let the room air out and it will do wonders. I used this on my mom's place who roomed with a chimney and a car with so much cigarette ash embedded in the upholstery that it looked like a texture.

u/ViciousJungleChicken · 2 pointsr/AskWomen

Crazy cat lady here, I have four in my apartment. Unless they are lying to me, everyone that comes over is always shocked I have cats because it doesn't smell like it "should". I have two air purifiers in the house these and I have this one that sits directly on top of the litter box. I've had my four cats around 10 years and also fostered probably about... 30. So I feel like I've tried it all and I finally have a good ritual and set up. I use this litter box because it's big and tall which they prefer but also easy to get inside when it's time to clean. I use this track mat because so far it's really done the best to keep the litter from traveling far from the box. And like you, I clean it 2-3 times a day. The litter that is. I use this litter which is LIGHT YEARS better than anything else I've ever used. One of my cats also has horrible allergies and this is the one litter I've found that she doesn't react to. It also doesn't dust so you don't have to constantly feel like poofs of litter are showing up around the house or on the carpet or furniture. I also vacuum every single day. I have one vacuum I use for the floor where there may be litter tracked and another I use that never touches litter. I think this is fairly important. This vacuum honestly is the best I've found for hair. Miracle worker. Unless you can afford the Dyson Animal. I also have this spray that I'll use for my carpet and fabric once a month or so and I feel like it makes a huge difference. And then lastly I also keep windows open whenever I can and I have this diffuser and put oil in it a few times a week and let it run for a bit, plus it looks cool with the lights :) Oh! and one last thing that I think is great... put one of those cardboard scratch pads near the litter box so the cat has to step over it to get anywhere else. Like off the track mat but near the box. I do this and all the cats inevitably use the scratch pad for fun when walking by it but I'm convinced it also cleans their paws from any litter left over before they start walking around the rest of the house!

u/GlamGlamGlam · 2 pointsr/AskMen

I think the generators come with a timer. You do not want to let it run for too long.

As for the run time, it depends on the size of the room. I have not used one yet but I was looking into it recently.

I think the typical case is to run it on a timer for an hour or two with the windows and door sealed then wait like an hour or so to let the ozone concentration fall back to normal and then open the windows and doors. For tenacious odors you might need to run it multiple times but every time you use it it should improve the smell.

i was looking into this model: https://smile.amazon.com/Enerzen-Commercial-Industrial-Deodorizer-Sterilizer/dp/B00JAP7388/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=ozone+generator&qid=1566836172&s=gateway&sr=8-3

u/rileybee · 2 pointsr/trees

For future reference, something like this would be incredibly helpful. It'll completely sanitize the smell in the room in 15 minutes.

u/NotAlanAlda · 2 pointsr/stopsmoking

An ozone generator does the trick. You can sometimes rent them from places like Sunbelt or Home Depot, or an even cheaper option is get something like this off Amazon. I bought one about like that specifically for my vehicles, I just run an extension cord to it, sit it in the center console, turn it on, close all the doors/windows and leave it sit for a few hours. Air it out before getting in the truck though, that shit can be a little toxic in enclosed spaces. If you can still smell it, repeat treatment until you can't anymore.

  • Edit - Another thing that works really well in addition to the ozone are pumice bags. You can find them in the cleaning aisle at Home Depot or Lowes for around 6 bucks, stick a couple of those under the seats and they'll absorb up the odors in the floorboards. After a week or so, take them out and sit them in direct sunlight for a couple hours to refresh them.

I used one of these, I left the apartment(because you can't be there while they run) I had to return 5 minutes later I forgot something... this one was melting on the table where I left it... I don't want to know what would have happened in another 5 minutes.

Get an ozone generator.

something like this one (we got this one)
http://www.amazon.com/Best-Choice-Products-SKY1057-Purifier/dp/B004FGNTYE/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1458999635&sr=1-1&keywords=living+fresh+3500+sqf+ozone+ionizer+cleaner+ionic+air+purifier+clean+air

Turn it on low when you are home, and crank to high when you leave for work.

it will seep into all the places where the smell originates and neutralize it.

There are some people who are sensitive to ozone, so adjust the setting when they are home accordingly.

we had a room that smelled of dog pee....boom. no more, and no new carpet

we had a room that smelled strongly of smoke....boom. no more and no new carpet.

Then we just leave it in the basement to fight that low-level mildew smell that can happen, and the HVAC system which circulates the air, makes sure the rest of hte house gets a bit of ozone too.

The ozone dissipates within about 30 minutes after you turn off the machine, depending on how much ventilation is in that room with the machine.

You can find them at Walmart ( I hate walmart) or a place like it for half this cost. I used something like this (it was a homes brand) for a single plant in a college dorm room with no issues. To significantly cut the smell, unless you are smoking a joint or blunt

To keep the area Fresh

and make sure to use these filters for the air purifier

The purifier takes 3 filters which is what is included in that filter pack i sent. The smoke ones are really good and have a carbon filter backing to them and last about 3 months. The ones that come with it are great for alergens but you might as well toss them if you are trying to get rid of smoke only.

I used to use orange spritz all the time. Last year, I bought one of these ozone generators: amazon.com/gp/product/B00JAP7388/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and I'm not going back.

They use these in hotel rooms to kill germs in between guests.

u/thebryza · 2 pointsr/DIY

Thanks for your thoughts. I was thinking about getting some Kilz Max which claims to be an odor blocker, but I am thinking the same thing - it's likely to just bring it's own smell. I had a fan in the window for quite a while and I think I will be putting it back in. I'm also wondering if maybe an ozone generator would help - I'm looking at this one. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JAP7388/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm not a tech, but try some Ozone, either through a dedicated machine or give a can of Ozium a shot (the latter is available at Walmart).

u/Zireael316 · 2 pointsr/CleaningTips

I'd try this air purifier. Worked wonders for getting rid of an undesirable smell from my roommate's clothes, bedding and room.

u/doomrabbit · 2 pointsr/TinyHouses

Ozone generators can remove deep stink. However, they do need to work in an unoccupied space.

Used this model to clean out dead squirrel stink from an attic and attached room. One use did it!

u/SMofJesus · 1 pointr/AutoDetailing

Something to add after doing what the others suggested is get the car Ozoned. Ozone will kill all remaining odor in the car. Larry from AMMONYC did a video on it and after a quick search something like this could be plugged in with an extension cord and left to sit overnight.

u/heelflipper · 1 pointr/poshmark

This is an extreme solution, you probably wouldn't do for a one off item but if you're trying to refurb stuff that smells like smoke to sell it can pay for itself.

Purchase a shock ozone treatment device like this: Ozone Generator

Enclose in large storage container. Hole in side for power. Seal with plumbers putty. Seal lid with weather stripping gasket. Run for about 30 minutes.

Works wonders pulling smells out of about anything.

Would suggest further research before you go this route but it's a pretty effective solution.

u/UnknownIntent · 1 pointr/hardwareswap

Don't have one myself, but was recommend This one somewhere else on Reddit. Much more powerful than the pretty ones, but also, please don't hurt yourself with it. Good Luck!

It has performed well, but is maintenance intensive. I have replaced the plates about once a year due to the humidity here on the Texas Gulf Coast. Other than that, it is great! It works well for removing the smell of smoke in my truck as well, just run the truck with the AC on recirculate for 20 minutes and it smells like new. If you run it too long in a small room or vehicle, it builds up a film on your windows and other surfaces.

u/strickt · 1 pointr/WildernessBackpacking

The absolute BEST way to remove smell from boots is an ozone generator. It gets the smell out of ANYTHING. THIS is what I have.

The way It works is to put it and your boots in a small, confined space. Like a large box. I use a plastic storage tub. And turn it on. Leave the room (ozone can be deadly) and let it run for an hour or two. Not only will it kill the mildew brewing in your boots it will also remove the smell.

I'll do the same thing with tents, down bags, pads etc. Hang them all in the bathroom. Turn that baby on. Wait a few hours and boom, no smell.

Its one of the best non backpacking gear purchases I've made. So worth it.

An ionizer can do wonders:

Most of the suggestions here are worthwhile. I would look at an ionic air purifier as well, e.g. http://www.amazon.com/Ionic-Pro-CA200C-ionic-Purifier/dp/B000HEB99A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409328427&sr=8-1&keywords=ionic+air+purifier

I know people that smoke with these in the room and it does a good job at keeping the room from even smelling like cigarette smoke, and it should work just as well for vapor.

u/draynen · 1 pointr/boardgames

My fiance got a cheap ozone generator on Amazon (I think it was this one https://www.amazon.com/VIVOSUN-Commercial-Generator-Industrial-Deodorizer/dp/B0772SMGDZ/) and was able to get the smoke smell out of her entire old apartment when she moved in. I'm pretty sure it would make quick work of the cards. Just don't breathe it in.

u/Q_SchoolJerks · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

Sure. Maybe that causes some people to get sick. OTOH, some people purposefully add ozone to their air (link). Also, MANY people think that drafts cause colds, so I think it's more likely to come from that.

u/HannsGruber · 1 pointr/automotive

as u/Hamburgertime604 suggested, the only long term solution is an ozone generator. They're pretty cheap on Amazon and, for what you'd spend constantly trying different air fresheners and enzyme cleaners, you'll save money.

u/iBody · 1 pointr/MechanicAdvice

You could try renting/buying and ozone machine. From the sounds of everything it just looks like you have some mildew/mold growing in your HVAC system, an ozone machine should would fix the issue. You could also try using Odoban instead of Lysol, I've had much better luck with it killing mildew.

Gas is measured in weight all the time. Are you really that dense?

Eg carbon dioxide, propane, nitrogen, oxygen

Maybe you've never seen it, but you bet your ass they can weigh a propane tank, fill it, weigh it again and calculate the volume of gas sold by weight.

Your arguments are bad, try again

This is the model I've used for the past couple years. The filter pulls out of the top of the unit, then you clean it off with a damp cloth, dry and slide back in place.

u/dawiyo · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Definitely look into an ozone generator. I have this one in my Amazon cart, just need to pull the trigger.

u/phrresehelp · 1 pointr/MechanicAdvice

Get an Ozone generator of amazon make sure its at least 4500mg/hr. Close all windows in the car and the doors. Turn it on for 2 hours, come back at around 1h 30 min and turn on the car, max ac vents set to recirculate. Let that run with the ozone generator on for the last 30 min. Take the ozone generator out when finished, leave the windows closed and the car on with vents blowing for another 30 min. Turn off the car and open all doors to vent the ozone. Done

I have this, and it worked well in a closet at my last apartment.. But if you have the cash to spend, this is what I use now and it's amazing.

u/FeralFizgig · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Honestly surprised you can't visually locate the spot unless it's hidden behind something like an appliance or HVAC unit.

You can get a decent ozone generator for $75-to-$100 on Amazon, which generally does a good job at knocking out organic-based smells (mold, urine, smoke, etc.). I've got one of those tiny 30-minute tap models in my main bathroom, and it works better than the vent for odors (though this may be more a statement about my vent).

In any case, I hear you can even rent them from industrial equipment rental places. But for such a relatively cheap price for a versatile device that may prove useful again if you have pets, then buying one might be a good option.

EDIT: For reference, here's the model I have on my wish list. Reading the reviews may give you an idea of its usefulness.

EDIT2: Ozone is harmful in large conentrations. It has an idealized half-life of 3 days, but that goes down to about 11 hours with 50% relative humidity, and can be cut further with agitation (blowing a fan around the space). For a basement application, run such a device for an hour or two (they have built-in timers) with the area sealed off, then either air out or prevent critters and people from using the space for a couple of days.

u/Bumpy_Waterslide · 1 pointr/houston

I bypassed the 2 hour timer and put a 24 hour one on. Now I can run 2 hours on 1hour off until I unplug it.

u/LeatherNads · 1 pointr/explainlikeimfive

I've found the solution! We take thousands of solar powered ozone ionizers, AKA those magic air purifiers grandma had in the 90's, tie them to weather ballons and release them into the atmosphere.... Where's my Nobel Prize?

u/Gold_Flake · 1 pointr/realestateinvesting

Use an Ozone machine. Breaks down smells on a molecular level. Works wonders.

u/merkk · 1 pointr/RealEstate

You can also try using a few of these around the house https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B3XUBES

i've only used this once and it was to deodorize a room that was very stuff from having old food and pot smoke in it. But it worked very well for that. Using these and/removing rugs/repainting should do the trick i think. You do however have to let these sit at least 4 hours (we let it go for 24 hours) and you can't be in the room while it's working

u/HighOnGoofballs · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Apparently it was only $89. I got this 11,000mg one and if I'm being honest I chose it due to the price and one day shipping and timer, since the reviews seemed similar for all of them. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M7VOSH1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I was looking for this comment. The tar etc will be there to stay, unless you pull your hvac ducts apart and manually scrub them down.

Honestly dawn dishsoap works amazing with a brillo sponge thing. I smoke, not in my house, but in my 3 season patio. Every summer it takes me about 6 hours of scrubbing to get all the tar and crap off all the windows, walls, ceiling, fans, etc. I should mention I have 24 windows floor to ceiling on my patio, one reason it takes so damn long.

On the topic of ozone generators in general. I had a small unit that was an "air purifier" and ozone generator I got off ebay. The "air purifier" I'm pretty sure was just a fan that literally did nothing. I have cats and their litter boxes are in my basement, so I would have the ozone generator go off at 4am for 20-30 min a few times a week just to cut down litter smell. I ended up buying this after it crapped out on me https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JAP7388/ just want to say, HOLY CRAP this thing is powerful. It's almost too powerful to use for me. It will wake me up in the middle of the night 3 floors up with the smell of ozone. Maybe close up all the windows in your house, take your air filter out of your hvac, shove the o3 generator in there, turn the hvac fan on continuous, and leave for a day.
