What's good for a three year old who will bang on the thing without washing his hands after eating something sticky or who is liable to spill some apple juice on it is different from what's good for an adult looking to learn to play piano. For the former you want something very cheap, for the latter you want something with 88 weighted keys. Buying new $300 isn't enough for you to learn piano, but it's plenty for a cheap keyboard a little kid is liable to break. If you want something to last at least a couple years for a piano student (yourself included) $500 is probably the least you'd want to spend, including the cost of the piano, stand, and shipping, excluding the cost of lessons. Here are the usually recommended entry level options for 88 weighted key pianos.

If the prices are a bit higher than you want, a couple choices for budget shopping: clvmusic.com, musicarts (20% off coupon for some items starting tomorrow), Amazon (only if shipped and sold by amazon, like here and you'll have to call for a coupon)

As for books, taking lessons is recommended, and going with a method book your teacher recommends and is familiar with is a good idea. Separately, make sure to find some time for your kid (and you) to learn songs that you enjoy. It helps everything a lot more fun. There are early beginner arrangements of popular songs, here's a decent place to start:

If you want to learn and teach your kid piano yourself, at least at first, Faber books could be fine.

RD-64 has 64 keys and is weighted.

Bonus is that the sound isn't sampled, so it's not like a keyboard where you press the note, and a pre-recorded sound gets played. You can find it on Amazon too, and the reviews seem good.

So I bough a Casio PX 800 last year and I really like it. The newer model, Casio PX 830 seems to have some issues so I would try it out at a local store if they have it.

Since my model isn't available anymore, Casio's AP420 is what I would get if I needed a piano this year. But I don't. Anyway it's retailing for $966 on Amazon.

Really appreciate the help. I'm gonna try my local music store tomorrow and ask around. The one I linked was a seventy-something key grand piano style keyboard. It was going for £70 which seemed outrageously good- no wonder it's gone now haha.

My friend recommended me this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Yamaha-NP11-Piaggero-Portable-Digital/dp/B004RTHGKW/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1417350696&sr=8-11&keywords=yamaha%20keyboard

He says it's been good for him and he's been playing for many years now - I think grade 6 or so. Tell me what you think anyway :)

EDIT: Upton having a further look on Amazon, I've found this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Yamaha-PSRE343-PSR-E343-Portable-Keyboard/dp/B00C9UXXQW/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1417374320&sr=1-2&keywords=yamaha+keyboard#customerReviews

These two are a similar price even with discounts. What would be the difference between them? All I can really think of is one comes with 200 effects or something. I have to admit, I'd rather have a sleek discreet looking keyboard than one with all the bells and whistles. Regardless, which type would you think is best for a beginner?

This is the one I have and I love it. Compared to other digital pianos I've played at the music stores, this one sounds the most realistic. It doesn't have too many voices, but you're definitely paying for the gorgeous sound. Hope this helps!

It would be a piano set that I've been wanting for ages.

I want it because while I'm still learning to play, I love the piano. To me, it's the instrument that can make the most beautiful slow songs, the songs that really send a tone down into your heart and make you shiver. Unfortunately, all I have currently is a keyboard that doesn't have the full 88 keys, so learning many songs is a challenge without the other keys.

I don't see myself being okay with not having this. I've been saving up for ages to buy it, and to be able to have it, in addition with the instructional book, would be amazing. I feel like getting this would be the way for me to continue practicing and getting better and learning new songs.

Oh, and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. I feel I've heard that song, but I'm not quite sure.

I was doing some looking around and both the Casio PX760BK and the Casio PX860BK caught my eye. The former is around 1k (Canadian) while the latter is around 1.2k. What are your thoughts on these keyboards?

u/filthywill · 1 pointr/piano

I second this - it's the cheapest I could find when I started earlier this year. I think I paid $449 for the setup which even without the sale is really close to your budget. I've linked the bundle below, the refurb version is just under $400. The keyboard itself without being on sale is also $400, so worst case you can make due and add on a cheap stand and chair.

I am using Yamaha DGX 650 and its amazing. This link is also 800 dollars and its the new version DGX 660. I think its much better just check the reviews.

Okay...I hear ya. If you want a fully weighted, 88 key digital piano that can plug into a computer and control the keys, but does not have any assignable buttons, faders, knobs, with decent sounds, and is under a grand. This is your best bet: Yamaha DGX650

what about this ine

u/Inchmahome · 1 pointr/japanlife

There are some similar ones around the 4 man mark, just read the reviews and see which one is best for you. There are some with the single pedal but I'd recommend getting one with 3 because you'll need to get them eventually.

u/SquirtleSpaceProgram · 1 pointr/piano

I don't know how important portability is to you, but I have the last version of this piano. It has proper scaled hammer action, making it feel somewhat close to the real thing. It seems super durable too. I've had mine for 4 years and it has survived 5 moves.

Obviously, it's not as nice as the real thing, but it definitely doesn't fell cheep or like a toy.

In other words. Even the internet knows not.

Looks like the region of 350 on Ebay tho
