Death of the Family.
If you've not read the New 52 Batman stuff you should. It's really great.
Here are my personal favorite head-fucks, each one of them did something strange to my whole world when I read them:
But yeah, by far my favorite is the one at the top of the list, The Illuminatus! Trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson. There's just so goddamn much going on in that book, it's one helluva wonderful ride.
Comes with a Joker mask for $25
The book by itself for $11
https://www.amazon.com/Blackest-Night-Geoff-Johns/dp/1401229530
This would get you most of the story. There are a bunch of tie ins...but those aren't totally necessary. However, I would recommend Johns' entire run for context. Blackest Night was the culmination of several years work.
I'm really hoping they pull from the Joker in Scott Snyder's current run in the Batman comics. He is incredibly fucked up in that.
If you get the chance, I highly recommend buying/torrenting/whatever the paperback titled "Joker" that compiles all the Bat family and puts his appearances in order. The shit he does to Harley Quinn is just...awful.

Edit - Batman Comics Explanation
Okay, this is something I wish someone would have done for me when I started reading the New 52 Batman. Now I want to pass that along, so people can read this amazing story about Joker with ease and understanding.
> A few years ago, DC Comics scrapped all of their running comic books and started every anew. Every superhero or villain started from square one, all at the same time. This was only a few years ago.
Currently in DC's New 52 company-wide series, there are numerous Batman titles: Batman Comics, Detective Comics, and the Bat Family comics (Nightwing, Batgirl, Batman & Robin, Red Hood, Red Robin). Each Bat Family member has their own comic book series.
>
> All of these titles take place in the same universe. So while Batman is doing something in Detective Comics, he's also doing something in Batman Comics. Same Batman, different day.
Well, in the very first issue of Detective Comics, Joker appears in this New 52 Batman universe. This is where this Joker story-arc I'm talking about begins.
As Batman and Detective Comics move forward in their tales of Batman, Joker appears in numerous issues of each, along with the Bat Family comics. So while Batman is battling Joker in Detective Comics and Batman Comics, Nightwing is also fighting him in Nightwing. Same with Bat Girl and the rest.
The story arc is called "Death of the Family." You can read Death of the Family exclusively in Batman Comics (Batman Issues #13-#17), or you can buy a book called "Joker" that orders and compiles all of the appearances and of Joker in the Bat Series. So you'll get the Batman Comics issues, and also Batgirl, Suicide Squad, Nightwing, etc. The whole story arc ends in Batman Comics with the title "The Punchline."
This is how I suggest you read the story. Joker is fucked up, but he's really fucked up in the whole series. You get the full effect when you read it as a whole.
Amazon Joker Book - http://www.amazon.com/The-Joker-Death-Family-New/dp/1401242359
absolutely. (though my recommendations will probably be pretty cliche/entry level in the world of comics)
If you want to stick to recent marvel, but want an "everyman" story, check out Matt Fraction's run on Hawkeye, where it basically just explores his everyday life. it's comedic and fun and Aja's art is wonderfully simple.
Another current series that is great (and will be constantly recommended) is Saga. Brian K. Vaughan's writing is great and Fiona Staples is one of the best digital artists in comics. The story is like star wars on acid, but with a wholesome focus, at it's core, on family. it's weird, funny, progressive, and quite graphic. interesting, sympathetic characters. Highly recommend it.
Another classic Brian K Vaughan series is Y: The Last Man. All men on earth simultaneously die, barring the protagonist, Yorick. Vaughan's writing is great in this as well.
One of my favorite series from all time is Neil Gaiman's famous Sandman. the series is basically stories about storytelling, with the (occasional) main character being Morpheus, "god" of dreams (though he has many other names/titles/definitions). it is often surreal and appropriately dreamlike. Gaimain loves his deities and mythologies and the world of Sandman simultaneously creates its own mythology while including/alluding to all those that humans have created IRL. Sandman's depiction of "reality" changes as drastically and frequently as the constantly shifting roster of illustrators involved.
Around that same time was Grant Morrison's Batman: Arkham Asylum - A Serious House on Serious Earth. while this was just a one-shot novel, it was very dark and directly focused on the psychological aspects of batman as a character. the idea that batman is as crazy as his enemies is nothing new, but this book epitomized it. like Sandman, very late 80's/early 90's feel.
another trippy comic i love is Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing. Moore reworked swamp thing as a sympathetic monster with themes focusing on identity and memory, while still being within the horror genre. Alan Moore is probably a literal genius and he's known for his many other famous classics, like Watchmen (probably the most classic/important comic, which is also about comics), V for Vendetta, and From Hell. Anything by Moore is a safe bet and he sets the bar for writing in the comic medium.
If you are more interested in art than story, my biggest reccomendation would be literally anything drawn by Jean Giraud, aka "Mœbius." He is probably a national hero in france and he was one of the most celebrated comic artists of all time. he made masterful linework look easy and he has a genius understanding of simple composition and color.
there are tons of smaller, fun books/series, many of which i have yet to read, but the ones i listed are all pretty standard, accessible recommendations. definitely check out a few! Edit: typos
I'd recommend:
Saga vol. 1 - awesome scifi comic by the writer of Y: the Last Man.
Locke & Key vol. 1 - vaguely Lovecraftian horror comic by Stephen King's son.
Egg Story - Awesome, super cheap graphic novel. An egg becomes a ninja!
All three are $29.33 at the moment.
But it really depends on your tastes. If you're mostly into superhero comics, those are not going to be good picks for you.
Lesbian/Queer main characters:
Batwoman - She's a lesbian and her romantic relationships play a fairly important role in the series. Her villains are a bit B-list but they're enjoyable reads never the less. Some controversy over DC's decision to prohibit her "happiness" and troubles with the talented creative staff that are worth investigating beforehand but it's worth noting that these issues do not effect the trade paperbacks 1-3. Don't make my mistake and accidentally buy Batgirl comics and wonder when she's supposed to start kissing ladies.
Lumberjanes - The trade paperback is supposed to come out some time next year but individual issues are currently being published. All ages comic that portrays a scout type group at a summer camp full of monsters. I'm not personally reading it but I've heard nothing but good things.
Funhome - A proper "graphic novel." An unbelievably intelligent and nuanced perspective on gender and sexuality. Bechdel compares her coming out process against her late father's closeted homosexuality to draw an intimate but calculated portrait of American sexuality and family.
Lesbian/Queer minor characters:
Saga - Holy shit, I can't recommend this enough. So utterly fantastic that words fail me. I buy this for everyone I know who's even faintly interested in comics.
The Walking Dead - The queer characters don't show up for a long while but this is the series the very popular TV show is based on. It's a little "Drama-y" for me but my girlfriend's dad gobbles them up like there's no tomorrow.
Not queer but awesome:
Chew - A world where poultry is outlawed and people have superpowers only related to food. My mom called it "kind of weird" which it is. I can't get enough.
Revival - The dead come to life but they're mostly just cranky, okay, sometimes murderous, but not that often. Strong female protagonists.
Well, if you want to be detailed then you can follow his full journey here, here, and here.
But if you want to go with trades (which will be a ton easier), then here's a list of trades in chronological order you can check out:
Then from here it can get confusing because multiple Green Lantern titles went into publication, but for this list it's only following Kyle Rayner's journey
> can be read alongside Green Lantern Corps: Blackest Night (2009) (GLC 39-47) by Peter Tomasi
> see here for reading order
Now is the New 52, same as before, there are multiple crossovers throughout the Green Lantern Line, so i will do my best to present Kyle's story the best i can
> contains events from the Light's Out trade which collects issue 24 of each Lantern title as well as issue 23 of New Guardians Light's Out event (2014) by Robert Venditti
And now is Rebirth

I know this isn't a novel, but The Walking Dead comics are a great zombie read.
The cheapest legal way to read them is by purchasing Compendium One, Two and Three. That's the first 144 issues. Probably best to start with just Compendium One to ensure you like them.
*Edit: The Comics FAQ can probably answer any additional questions you may have.

and I haven't caught up yet but he's also in here
http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Vol-Endgame-Scott-Snyder/dp/1401261167
Grab some trades of Locke and Key, Black Science, Manhattan Projects, Y: The Last Man, Saga, Sex Criminals
Watch: If you have already watched TWD and GoT, some other good TV series include: Fear the Walking Dead, True Detective season 1, Vikings, The 100, American Horror Story season 1 - Murder House and season 2 - Asylum, Stranger Things, Penny Dreadful, first few seasons of True Blood, Sons of Anarchy, Narcos, House of Cards, Bates Motel, The Last Kingdom, and that's all I can think of right now. You can also check out IMDb: Most Popular TV Series.
Read: Read TWD comics and read the Game of Thrones book series, A Song of Ice and Fire. Just give the first A Song of Ice and Fire book, A Game of Thrones, a try and I guarantee you will be hooked and won't be able to put it down. I can't even stress how amazing both book series are compared to their TV show counterparts, especially the GoT books. There's so much detail in both TWD and GoT books that they didn't have time to fit into the TV series or didn't care, but reading the books really helps to understand certain characters and situations that occur in the show. You don't even have to actually pay money for the books, you can just download the ebook files to read them for free. (If you want to know where to download the ebook files for free, message me.) I actually always do that, if the files are available, and if I start reading it and enjoy it, I purchase the actual physical book, as I did with all of the GoT and TWD books. To save money when purchasing the physical copies of TWD comics, make sure to buy TWD comics in Compendiums (Amazon: TWD Compendium One) instead of individual books.
The Walking Dead is actually really easy to get into because it is only one series. You can start at #1 and read up to the current issue. The best and cheapest way you can do this would be to buy the two Walking Dead compendium that have been released. They go from #1-96 and they're around $35-40 each.

Amazon links:
You should check out Black Hole by Charles Burns.
With Brian Azzarello's version of Lex:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/401200.Lex_Luthor
Also his version of Joker is Phenomenal:

And I've been reading/collecting since the 80s. Trust me, it's an addiction worth feeding.
Get the compendiums. There are three out so far. They have like 50 issues each in them and are 20-40 bucks. Best deal in comics. https://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1542150565&sr=8-4&keywords=walking+dead+compendium
The first compendium. It contains volumes 1-8.
Volume 16 releases in June, so the second compendium with volumes 9-16 should be out later this year, I'm thinking.
You can also buy each volume for under $9 each, if you don't want to wait for the second compendium
Jason is kind of unique. He tells fiction with often long passages of no words. He has a really subtle sense of humor. You would have to look to alt comix for similar comics, stuff like;
Daniel Clowes - He's got a dry sense of humor and often writes satirically about life and culture. You can check out the movies he made with Terry Zwigoff, Ghost World and Art School Confidential.
Charles Burns' work is often surreal and some what disturbing though fascinating at the same time. he is most famous for his massive Black Hole about teen age STD's gone wild. He just finished a trilogy which is part auto bio and part surreal dream sequences, X'ed Out, The Hive, and Sugar Scull
I guess you could include David Mazzucchelli's Asterios Polyp in this group of similar works though it's really original. It's about an architect that goes through a midlife crisis though it's one of the most inventive graphic novels to ever have been made. He uses every aspect of the comic to communicate to the reader, from the drawings, to the type face, to the color and even the very design of the book. It's a must read experience, thought completely unique.
Robert Crumb often has a dry, satirical sense of humor to his work. He is most famous for his 60's underground comics as shown in the Complete Crumb #4. He's done some really beautiful biographical work like his Patton about country blues musician Charley Patton. His newest work is the illustrated Book of Genesis a massive strait comic adaption of the Bible.
"Daytripper" is a beautiful and deep read.
"Black Hole" is trippy and existential and has a lot of meat to it.
A few graphic novels:
A couple more books that are on my wish list, though i haven't read them yet, are:
Well, you could grab the compendiums one at a time and read all the comics that way.
Only legal place I know digital is comiXology through ipad etc. If that doesn't work for you I'd suggest ordering the Compendium from Amazon, it's huge and great value for how many you get (48 issues in 1).

Buy them on Amazon!!!
The first one here for $37.
The second here for about the same price.
Has anyone read the Walking Dead comics? This seems like a good price, but I really didn't take to the TV show and have heard the graphic novels are better.
Opinions please!
Maus got me started. It has some violence (not a ton) in it - it is the Holocaust, after all - but it's not violence just for the sake of violence. It's a true story. If the Holocaust in general is too unsettling to her, then this ain't the book for her.
Black Hole is quite bizarre, which is typical for Charles Burns, but very good.
If she calls comics "picture books" then I'm guessing that all superhero books are out the door. That's the single biggest segment of comic sales, so if that's what she thinks of comics in general then she probably thinks the same of superhero books in general. That's not meant as criticism. To each her own. It's just my guess about her tastes.
Maybe the Sandman? I don't know; there's a lot of ways you can go with this. Good luck and merry Christmas, my friend.
Oh yes, I second Uzumaki like /u/Goober_Pyle said. Junji Ito's Uzumaki and Gyo is good. Also, Black Hole by Charles Burns is awesome :D
For vampires, you may like the American Vampire Series.
The Troop by Nick Cutter
Geek Love by Katherine Dunn
Black Hole by Charles Burn
Johnny The Homicidal Maniac: Director's Cut https://www.amazon.com/dp/0943151163/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_3uj4CbKT1RJCX
I've been reading a lot of horror recently, so I can suggest a few off the top of my head.
Hell House by Richard Matheson
Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill
The Shining by Steven King
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski (You might hate this one.)
Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay
Also, I'm not sure if you're into comics, but there's a bunch of great horror there. I recommend Locke and Key, Colder, and Wytches.
Looks like you enjoy Batman. Maybe get Year One?
If you can get into X-Men, try out Whedon's run on Astonishing X-Men. It's perty darn good. Starts here.
I personally dig a few comics that are becoming classics, but aren't classics in the traditional sense...
Try Fables.
Try Walking Dead
Try MY FAVORITE CURRENT COMIC Unwritten.
Also... do yourself a huge favor and start reading a comic or two that isn't in trade form already. There's a lot of great stuff that's either just come out or is soon coming out. In particular...
Try Saga.
A good place to start is Seed of Destruction, the first volume of Hellboy. I believe there’s only like 13 volumes of Hellboy all told. It’s one of those creator-owned stories that gets a new issue whenever Mignola feels like doing one so 23 years or so only amounts to that much comic...
There are omnibus collections though if you would rather have like 4 phone books instead of 13 TPBs. To make it more confusing, the Omnibus is in chronological order of Hellboy’s life instead of in order of publication... But you can either start with Omnibus 1, which is called Seed of Destruction :
https://www.darkhorse.com/Books/3002-363/Hellboy-Omnibus-Volume-1-Seed-of-Destruction-TPB
Or Trade Paperback 1, also called Seed of Destruction :

Here's a few off the top of my head!
Sooo many others, but this is good starter list. Fair warning: I have not read these with an eye as to what would be appropriate in a Christian environment. I am fairly certain that Stitches, Maus, and Locke and Key are all "safe."
Edit: Eff it here are some more.
You have already mentioned all of my other would be suggestions. :)
Alabaster: Wolves by Caitlín Kiernan and Steve Lieber
Colder by Paul Tobin and Juan Ferreyra
Locke and Key by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez
30 Days of Night by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith
Criminal Macabre by Steve Niles, Ben Templesmith, Christopher Mitten and others
Ragemoor by Jan Strnad and Richard Corben
Edgar Allen Poe adaptations by Richard Corben, he does them regularly in DHP and as one-shots from time to time.
Or if you want something really old-school
EC archives: Tales from the Crypt
Creepy Archives
Eerie Archives
EDIT: added stuff and links
Buy this. Issues 1-48 in a single book.
This is the trade I am referring to. Moore, Gaiman, Miller, and Morrison are not credited writers on it. McFarlane is the only credited writer on it.
Just a tip- go for the compendiums to save quite a bit of money. You can get 1000 pages (8 books) for 32$ each, instead of 12$ a book.
http://www.amazon.ca/Walking-Dead-Compendium-1/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397042529&sr=8-1&keywords=walking+dead+compendium
If you like the first few, please considering supporting the author by buying the books.
First half is only $35 on Amazon
I just finished the first compendium. It is amazing. So much happens and it is not like the show at all. The characters are better, the action is super intense, and you dont have to wait an entire season for something to happen. Every three pages some shit goes down.
Dont buy it in a book store. It's $60. On amazon it's $35. I got lucky and got it for $30 last year.
Here you go my friend!
https://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760
For any Alan Moore fans waiting for this episode you need to check out: From Hell
An excellent exegesis on The Ripper, with the appropriate amount of the occult and non linear time you hope for from our favorite wizard.
Based on Heath ledger's portrayal, I thought it was great.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Joker-Brian-Azzarello/dp/1401215815
This is the cheapest I could find. It's Amazon.com/Compendium 1.
Also, I've been reading since issue 1. I own 3-current in the floppies. It's really amazing how it has yet to get stale. I figured it'd end around issue 60 or so, like most 'long' continuing comics, and here we are, rounding 78, and no sign of slowing. Enjoy!
http://www.amazon.com/The-Joker-Death-Family-New/dp/1401242359
I would suggest the hardcover books, because they're not too expensive and look great. I used to download the comics when they became available, then a couple years later I bought the first 2 books. I don't remember seeing any difference between the originals and the books.
Edit: wow, it's up to 6 volumes? I need to catch up!
In the comic there are actually more black people. I'm strictly keeping me from spoilering but you should check them out. They are actually better than the show if you'd ask me.
I really liked Wytches.
Local comic book stores should have TWD comics, if not look online. I know amazon sells the compendiums (collection of about 50 issues) or you could buy them by volumes. Shop around online and see what medium you’d prefer. Here’s a link to help out.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1607060760/ref=pd_aw_fbt_14_img_3/147-3855025-4383101?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=RJV3QTS2RE3J140EJVXY
There is only one place to start with Hellboy, and that is Hellboy vol. 1: Seed of Destruction.
After that, you should know that volumes 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 12 continue the plot from volume 1 directly, while volumes 3, 4, 7, 10, and 11 are collections of short stories that take place at various times in Hellboy's past. I would recommend just reading them all in order though.
What you're looking for is the Spawn Origins Hardcover collections. And McFarlane has been pretty good about releasing them on a regular basis. We're already up to book 9 I believe, getting us all the way up to issue 112 (about halfway through the entirety of the series).
For about $20 (less than the cover cost of individual issues) you'll be getting around 12 issues per book. They're all still in print (as far as I know) so they're easy to find or at least easy to have ordered in.
There is a TPB version, however these collect half the issues AND DO NOT CONTAIN SOME ISSUES AT ALL (e.g. 9 and 10 are not in TPB 2), and aren't always half the price. But if mobility and super casual reading are your thing, these are right up your alley.
In regards to massive compendiums, there are these Deluxe Editions at triple to quadruple the price of the other hardcovers, but only collect double the issues. Also, they're quite large and unwieldy for reading, in my opinion. Good collector's item though.
tl;dr The Spawn Origins Hardcover collections are what you're looking for.
You could spend $18 for every 12 issues - or get the 6 issue trades for about $8-9 each...or...
Or you could buy compendium #1, and get the first 48 issues for $39. Save yourself about $33.
http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760
Oh you have options my friend.
The Walking Dead - Compendium 1 Pros - absolute cheapest method on a per-issue basis, only one book to worry about instead of multiple copies. Cons - Only released every 48 issues, so you get 1-48 but the next compendium won't come out for at least six more months as they just hit issue 90, so you'd be waiting a long time for the next group.
Trade Paperbacks
Pro's - still a better value than buying individually, released every six issues instead of every 48 so much, much greater frequency, if you have a book shelf having a bunch of these lined up on it looks "cooler" in my opinion.
Con's - more expensive per issue than the Compendium, still only comes out every six issues so can leave large gaps.
Ok well I'll try to give you a few series
Invincible. Really great superhero story by the guy that makes The Walking Dead if you've heard of that. Probably the best superhero book out there. (You can buy the compendium, the first 47 issues for like $40 on amazon). It's up to around 90 issues now.
Y the Last Man (10 volumes, complete. Its amazing. It's a comic where seemingly every man in the world except our hero has died. He tries to get to a lab in California to help find a cure for the disease that killed all the men and...etc)
I don't know much Fantasy...check out Demon Knights, volume 1 from DC comics is an ongoing series. Volume 1 (the first 7 comics) should be out in July. Sorry about the long wait :l
You can also check out the Walking Dead if you like zombies? Compendium gets you...maybe the first 60 issues I think? Its up to 94 now
For individual comics theres Midtown Comics, I don't know what shipping cost would be like to Europe.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1330920156&sr=8-3
1088 pages for $34
Brian Azzarello's Joker. Batman isn't a huge focus of it but it has a similar portrayal of the joker
http://www.amazon.com/The-Joker-Brian-Azzarello/dp/1401215815
The Joker comic by Brian Azzarello barely has Batman in it. This is likely going to be a world and character building story.
Read "Batman" Vol 3. It contains the main story. The Joker book contains all the tie-in issues of the other bat-family members during the main story.
The issues taking part in DotF are:
Batman#13-17
Batgirl#13-16
Catwoman#13-14
Suicide Squad#14-15
Detective/Teen Titans/RHATO/Nightwing/Batman&Robin#15-16
All in all though yes that should be all you need (The Joker HC), there might even be a few extra issues because, for example, the last page of a certain issue had something to do with the Joker.
EDIT: Just to be certain, this is what you are talking about right?
Right, basically some of these rely on pre New-52 continuity until stated otherwise. All volumes referred to below will be New 52 unless otherwise stated. That being said...
11-7 years ago: The Zero Year storyline by Scott Snyder currently running throughout the Batman title had a series of backups detailing Bruce's training (in current continuity). This is covered in Batman Vol 4.
Also see Batman and Robin Vol 1 which I believe covers Bruce's Ninja training, though only in flashbacks.
6 Years Ago: You're in luck for this one. The current, in continuity take on Batman's first year is being told in the current Batman title. It's a 12 part story called Zero Year, dealing with Bruce crafting the persona, meeting the Red Hood, Riddler etc. It's in progress at the moment and well worth a look. The volume referred to above is the first part, and the entire storyline has great art by Greg Capullo.
6 Years Ago: Batman's first encounter with the Justice League is found, naturally enough in Justice League Vol 1.
However, Superman and Batman's first encounter was detailed in, again naturally enough, Batman/Superman Vol 1
Dick Grayson's time as Robin can be found in the zero issue of Nightwing.
4 Years Ago: Batgirl's zero issue.
3 Years ago: I'm actually kind of week on this one in current continuity. Jason's death and return are here.
2 Years Ago: Read Tim Drake's new, bad origin in Teen Titans #0 or the most recent issue of Secret Origin, I think it was #3. They both tell roughly the same story. That story is bad.
1 year ago: Going to have to go out of continuity, as I'm nearly sure the founding of Batman Inc. is only covered in the pre New-52, as part of Grant Morissons Bat saga. The first volume is here, but you really need to look up everything else that preceded it, see below. This also goes for dead Batman being replaced by Dick Grayson, which is recounted in Batman and Robin, first series, Vol 1.
The origin of Damien, however, is handily recounted in Batman and Robin #0. This is in New 52 continuity.
Now: Woo! Nearly there. Breathe. So the Court of Owls story basically starts in Batman #1 pretty much, and can be found here.
Batgirl's return to superheroics can be found here, in Batgirl Vol 1. Barbara is still only just reacclimating to life as Batgirl as the series begins.
Joker removes his face in, maybe one panel or so in Detective Comics #1.. Spoiler, issue's shit. Get Snyder Batman instead.
Joker returns, sans face in Batman Vol 3, Death of The Family.. That link contains only the main story told in Batman, but it tied into several Bat-Titles as well. The HC contains these, though the quality varies a bit, IMO.
Tim forms the Teen Titans in Teen Titans Vol 1.
Again, not sure, but I think the Anti-Fear stuff was in Dark Knight.
Happy Reading!
NANANANANANANANA BAT-EDIT: I am by no means a Batman authority, I read nearly all of these, but feel free to correct or append if you are more knowledgeable. Bonus sassy batman
Not sure if you'd be interested in graphic novels, but The Walking Dead is a great series.
Short Answer why this is so loved is the same reason why people like Harry Potter fan-fiction.
Marvel comics are more often than not about character empowerment, without much character . DC on the other hand focuses more on Idealism - examples being Superman and the American Dream, Wonder Woman and female empowerment, Batman and staying true to one's convictions in the face of true evil.
If you want well-written comic books then you're probably looking in all the wrong spots if the best you found was the most recent Secret Wars.
List of some of the best comic book story lines ever.
DC
Kingdom Come by Mark Waid, illustrated by Alex Ross(Easily the best comic title in the list, every page looks like a watercolor painting)
Identity Crisis by Brad Meltzer (extremely controversial, Trigger Warning)
Crisis on Infinite Earths
Zero Hourby Dan Jurgens and Jerry Ordway
Green Lantern: Blackest Night by Geoff Johns
Shazam: Power of Hope by Alex Ross
Marvel
Adam: Legend of Blue Marvel by Kevin Grevioux (only good title from Marvel in a long time, it did what Black Panther tried to do in a more meaningful way)
The Superior Spiderman by Dan Slott
Dark Phoenix Saga by Chris Claremont
Read this:
This only collects all of the Tie in issues and is missing the main story.
You will need to buy Batman Vol 3 For the Main Story.

I think the best thing to do for now would be to ween into comics. I'd start off with graphic novels so you don't have to follow too deeply into a series. Start off reading something like The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller, or Watchmen by Alan Moore. Get a feel of it before you start off. Once you read a couple of novels, I'd look into getting some trade paperbacks of some series. The Walking Dead has been a really good series; it isn't just a plain zombie story...it's more about the human side of the standard zombie tale, such as how they survive, how they interact with each other, etc. Another good TPB to get into would be The Sandman which has some of the coolest artwork and storytelling I've seen. After you start catching up with some TPB's, THEN I'd look into single issues, starting with the first issue of an arch (it will say something like Part 1, Part 1 of 6, etc.). The comic book shop guys are usually pretty cool dudes and can help you find a good arch thats currently going on. Also, places like Half Price Books usually have TPB's for cheaper, but that depends on if you're okay with buying from a secondhand place instead of a small business (I like to go about half and half on purchases, just to save money and to help keep the small guy in the game). Hope this helps!
Fellow fan of series here! Let me see...
Young Adult
Percy Jackson series is fun (and finished, too, I think).
Artemis Fowl series isn't quite as good as Percy Jackson IMHO, but it's got a following.
Fantasy
Harry Dresden series This is one of my favorites. Harry is Chicago's only professional wizard. There are a ton of these books and they are still going strong.
Game of Thrones These are great...but unfinished. If you watch the show, reading the books does help you get even more out of the story, I think.
Wheel of Time Another good series. There is a LOT of this series and it's finished. (Thank you, Brandon Sanderson!)
Mistborn Speaking of Brandon Sanderson... This one is very good. I highly recommend reading the Mistborn books before trying the Stormlight Archive, but only because as good as Mistborn is, Stormlight Archive is even better.
Stormlight Archive Amazing. Man, these are good. The series isn't finished, but the two books that are available are some of my favorites ever.
Kingkiller Chronicles I loved the first book. I could not freakin' believe I enjoyed the second one even more. The third one is still pending.
Temeraire Dragons in Napoleonic times. Super cool premise! This one is not finished (I don't think, anyway).
Gentlemen Bastards Con men in a fantasy realm. It's pretty light on the fantasy elements. Very light, I'd say. I'd also say that it has some of the very best swearing that I've ever come across. :D
Scifi
Old Man's War I'm almost finished this one--it's amazing!
Horror/Thriller
Passage Trilogy I've heard these described as vampire books...maybe zombie books... It's apocalyptic for sure. Great books!
Mysteries
Amelia Peabody Egyptology + murder mysteries. Super fun, but trust me...go with the audiobooks for these. They are best when they are performed.
Stephanie Plum Total popcorn reads. If that's your thing, shut off your brain and just enjoy.
Walt Longmire These get particularly good as it goes along. The main character is a sheriff in modern day Wyoming. (Side note: The TV show is also great--just don't expect them to stick to the books.)
Graphic Novels (Everything recommended can be gotten in a "book" format instead of only in comic form, in case that matters. I've gotten most of these from my local library.)
Locke & Key Eerie as crap. Love the art! This one is on-going.
Y: The Last Man All the men on the planet drop dead in a day...except for Yorrick. REALLY good. This is the series that got me reading graphic novels. Plus, it's finished!
Walking Dead I am not a zombie fan...but I like these. They're not done, but I've read up through volume 22 and am still enjoying them.
Other
OutlanderI have no idea how to categorize these or even give a description that does them justice. I refused to pick it up for AGES because it sounded like a bodice-ripper romance and that's not my bag. But these are good!
I hope there's something in there that'll do for you. Have fun and read on!
Edit: Apparently, I need to practice formatting. :/
Edit 2: I forgot to add the Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentlemen Bastards #1).
If you're talking about free content...well...you can always pirate them, but that's kind of a dick move and I wouldn't recommend it. Kirkman deserves our support for this masterpiece!
Go buy the trade paperbacks from Amazon...support the author, and you get a physical copy to boot!
A very long list that I believe is full of gems:
Preacher, Volume 1 by Ennis
Sandman: Preludes and Nocturnes by Gaiman
Invincible: Family Matters by Kirkman
Southern Bastards
Kingdom Come
Marvels
Watchmen
Saga
Mind MGMT
Daredevil: The Man Without Fear
Batman: The Long Halloween
Pride of Baghdad
All Star Superman
The Walking Dead: Days Gone Bye
Thor: God of Thunder
Annihilation (read it digitally on Marvel Unlimited, finding it in print is costly)
Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman, Volume 1 (by far, my favorite take on the characters. Hickman writes them to perfection.)
Spider-Man: Kraven's Last Hunt
Ok, for dark and creepy in the new 52 you want to read Animal Man, Swamp Thing and I, Vampire.
Definitely read Action Comics for some great Superman. And pick up the "trade paperback" for All Star Superman (it's older, but by the same guy who's writing Action Comics right now and considered one of the best Superman stories ever told).
If you want good original horror stuff, pick up the trade paperbacks for Locke & key. I think they're up to issue #20 or so now, so it would be difficult to pick up the single issues.
For X-Men, Wolverine and the X-Men just started at #1 last week and is really good.
For thor I'd recommend Thor: The Mighty Avenger, and the newish Mighty Thor that's currently on issue #7 and the first 6 (I'm guessing) will be coming back in trade paperback in December
Something I always harp on with new readers that is otherwise unrelated: PAY ATTENTION TO THE WRITER AND THE ARTIST OF THINGS THAT YOU END UP ENJOYING. Most comic enthusiasts follow writers and artists more than they follow specific characters. The writing quality varies just as widely as the quality of films, tv, etc. You might love The Walking Dead TV show right now, but if the old writers quit and they hired the writers from Gilmore Girls and the O.C. to replace them you probably wouldn't enjoy it anymore... and the equivalent to this happens quite regularly in comics.
Locke and Key by Joe Hill: one of the best horror comics in recent years.
The Haunter of the Dark: black and white adaptations of Lovecraft
Uzumaki by Junji Ito
The Courtyard and Neonomicon: Alan Moore's take on the Lovecraft mythos. Neonomicon is tough to recommend due to extreme adult situations.

Amazon carries the compendiums. I think there should be 3 now which will equal 150 issues I believe, and will get you close to caught up with the ongoing releases.
First I would find a local comic shop and try and support them. If you don't have one near you here are some links for Amazon.
Compendium One
Compendium Two
Those two will catch you up through issue #96. You can either wait until Compendium 3 comes out in a year or so or buy the trades starting with Vol. 17. The trades collect 6 issues and come out a couple of times a year.
No, it's not too late to start reading them.
There are a lot of differences between the show and comic and is a different experience altogether.
Can anyone give me any feedback on this? Apparently it's a collection of issues 1-48, which seems like a better buy than the volumes.
Edit: And here's the Amazon link to the same product.
Edit 2: Cheers, everyone who replied! That helps a lot. I will probably end up grabbing the trades, since I'm a fairly small person who will probably struggle to lug the omnibus around!
You'll be able to find the collections much cheaper on eBay/Amazon Marketplace than the individual issues - the early ones go for a pretty penny now.
There is also a Compendium of the first 50 issues which is pretty good value.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1607060760/ref=redir_mdp_mobile
There is a link to the first compendium which includes the first 8 volumes containing issues 1-48. These, because they are collections of the volumes themselves, are a bit more expensive but give you more for your dollar and take it from my experience, the walking dead is a marathon book. You dont want to have to wait for the next one.
If you haven't read the American Dreams graphic novel yet, do it now.
Here you go, Analdelrey.
There are 4 comics in the 'American Dreams' series.
You can get the whole series in one big 96 page book from Amazon here. It's temporarily 'out of stock' at Amazon, but you can still pre-order it from them for when they get stock back in, or you can purchase it from a independent seller on Amazon that also has it for sale. =)
Hope this helps clear things up a bit for ya! ;-)
Nice! You're welcome :)
If you're not reading digital and money isn't an issue, get the oversized library editions!
If you want to go cheaper, either get the TPB (just start with Hellboy Vol 1: Seed of Destruction) or, if waiting is not a problem, they're re-releasing the whole series as omnibuses starting in may (4 consecutive volumes and 2 short story collections). That should be the most cost effective option to get the whole story.
Cerebus
Bone
Black Hole
Scud: The Disposable Assassin
Love and Rockets
It would be a small week for me but I also ordered the Dark Tower Omnibus. Should be here by Friday. I can't wait to read this beast.
A favorite of mine is JOKER. It's all about the Joker, as seen through the eyes of a low level thug. It's pretty damn good. Also Batman: The Man Who Laughs is a great Joker-heavy one as well.
The comic Joker. It came out around the same time as the film and expanded a bit on what might have been the Dark Knight Joker.
http://www.amazon.com/Joker-Brian-Azzarello/dp/1401215815/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1420347257&sr=1-1&keywords=joker+azzarello
This, and the other things I've seen posted, are incredible.
Is this All Star Superman a current series, or is, by chance, this?. If it's the latter, I'm buying it like, now.
EDIT A lot of people chimed in to confirm that the book I linked to was in fact where these images are from, and on the awesomeness of the book. As I stated in many of the posts, I picked up the book today. I just got home and am excited to crack in to it. As I explained, I'm not much of a Superman guy- just never got in to him, and for no good reason other than I'm honestly not a capes guy, with the exception of Batman.
That said, I'm pretty excited about what I see here, and to dig in to this book. For good measure, as well, I picked up Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo's Luthor which I presume to be somewhat a version of what they did with The Joker- getting in to the main villain of the story. The Joker was pretty unique, without question, so it will be interesting to see how Luthor is in comparison.
Thanks again for all the great comics-talk over the last couple of days. I love reading comics, but I really love talking comics too.
Also, and I'll probably make a stand-alone post about this lest the mods advise otherwise, but Barnes and Noble has a sale right now (that I was told will probably go on through the month) where Marvel and DC books are buy 2, get 1 free (and I'm pretty sure she said mix and match is OK).

If you read comics, I would highly recommend Wytches by Scott Snyder and Jock. Another good horror comic with witches is Redlands by Jordie Bellaire and Vanessa del Ray.
Always good to hear someone wants to get into the series. You can purchase the single issues here, and lots pop up on eBay all the time. If you want to read them in trades, you can get them off Amazon (or any good comic retailer) here for the TPB. Unfortunately they have stopped printing the origins collection (rumour has it they will be doing a reprint in the future), so the first Hardcover volume has skyrocketed in price. We also have a weekly book club going, which usually has links to .cbr files.
Hope you enjoy the series, it really is great.
They usually bunch comic books into trade paperbacks which are about 6 issues each. The Walking Dead does that and also bundles them all the way up to 48 issues each with their compendiums: https://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1466283464&sr=8-1&keywords=walking+dead+compendium. They're are three of these out so far.
I ordered the Compendium Volume One off of Barnes and Noble's website. Here's a link for Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/The-Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332362280&sr=8-1
Almost 50 issues, over 1,000 pages for only one easy payment of $34.17!
$35 on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760
Now I just wish I had $35.
The cheapest buying option. Each compendium is 48 issues.
There are 3 compendiums so far, covering 144 issues out of the 152 yet released.
If you're willing to spend ≈$30 on The Walking Dead based only on recommendations, then go ahead and do so.
If you prefer reading a book before buying it, or not buying books at all, your local library will mostly likely have The Walking Dead in some form stocked, provided your town isn't extremely small. (That's how I got into it—my high school had them.)
If you're wishing to remain unspoiled, stop after reading Compendium 2, Book 8, Volume 16, or Issue 96 (all line up with "Knots Untie" AKA S06E11.)
Reading further will spoil upcoming episodes.
Message me if you're legitimately interested in investing in reading the comic book, and I'll give you more details about getting your hands on them and/or reading them without spoiling future episodes.
(This invitation goes out to anyone else as well.)
I don't like the cast, I think it could have been better.
However, I am TWD junkie, so when it isn't on, or I'm between the graphic novels, I watch FTWD.
Have you read the comics yet? If not, I HIGHLY recommend them.
*edit- You can get them in 3 compendiums now.. makes it a little easier. Compendium 4 should be rolling out soon, I hope!
Compendium 1
Compendium 2
Compendium 3
I’d suggest getting [these] (The Walking Dead: Compendium One https://www.amazon.com/dp/1607060760/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_h5a.BbV94Y0J9)
How much are you willing to spend? There are about 150 issues total and the show is about to hit the arc that starts around issue #100. There are three compendiums out that collect 48 issues each. If you want a solid chunk of TWD to get the juices flowing, you'd save even more money by going the compendium route.
The first one is going for $36 on Amazon and it collects #1-48. About $0.75 per issue. If you like/love that, you could either continue collecting the compendiums (and have to wait about four years for the next compendium to come out, since TWD is usually on a 12-issues-per-year schedule except for a few events in the past that had an issue every two weeks), or you could start collecting the trades going forward and eventually pick up the trades that were in compendium one. It's up to you.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/1607060760/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_wnH-wbAJY47G1
Issue by issue? You do realize comics are collected in volumes, right?
Issues 1-48, 1088 pages, $36.
You have three options:
It all comes down to what kind of book or reading experience you're looking for. The TPB is light and easy to carry around if you're looking to read while traveling or while lying up-side down. The hardcover is nice and durable you're looking for something that won't risk getting damaged easy. The Compendium gives you the best bang for your buck, but it's quite bulky.
(I've thought about getting some Walking Dead books too, so this is the kind of decision I'm battling with)
Well Vol. 3 is already available.
Vol. 4 will be out in about six weeks.
Volume 4 is going to be fairly short, only collecting issues 0, 21-24, and annual 2. Then it will be several months before Vol. 5 is out.
Personally, I trade wait. I like being able to devour a story in an afternoon, rather than be left wanting more each month. But that's just my preference. Honestly, you could probably find issues 18+ on eBay fairly cheap. Or check your local comic store if you have one. Most are decent about having some back issues.
It's personal preference if you want to hunt back issues for the Zero Year arc, or wait six weeks to get half the story then several months for the second half. I'd recommend hunting the back issues if you're going to start collecting the monthly releases at issue 30. That way you'll be caught up on the story when issue 30 comes out next month, as opposed to waiting for the volumes to be released. Otherwise, you'd have no way of knowing what happened between the end of Vol. 3 (issue 17) and issue 30 until you collected Vol. 4 & 5.
Well "Joker - DotF" is just a collection of tie-in issues for the main story line that is collected in Batman Vol. 3.
The Joker collection is so-so. Some issues where great, but others were really weak.
Batman Vol.3 on the other hand is a great story.
Just a small PSA: if you want to get the collected Death of the Family book, there are two different ones:
The second one contains only the tie-ins, so if you get that one you won't understand a thing.
You will also need http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Vol-Death-Family-The/dp/1401242340/ref=bxgy_cc_b_text_a to have the (more or less) complete version of the story. The Joker hardback contains the tie-ins while the Batman one contains the Batman issues #13-17.
This is what you're talking about, right? It only has a few collections from each character, Batman, Nightwing, Suicide Squad, Catwoman, etc. I think there is a box set of all 3 volumes though.
Just read the trade. You can get it for $10
Batman Vol. 3: Death of the Family (The New 52) (Batman (DC Comics Paperback)) https://www.amazon.com/dp/1401246028/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_bRjyDbDF8MVYE
Batman by Snyder & Capullo is generally the most acclaimed Bat-book at the moment.
Manapul and Buccellato were incredible on The Flash. Their run goes through Volume 5. The new team starts with Volume 6, but I can't speak to quality.
Morrison's Action Comics was the best Superman title for a while. After that, we'll skip Volume 4 because it's bad and contributes nothing to anything. Volume 5 starts Greg Pak's run, which runs into the Doomed crossover.
Peter Parker returns after a short absence (where Doc Ock inhabited his body,) and goes almost immediately into the huge Spider-Verse crossover.
The core story arc of "Death of the Family" ran in Batman #13-17. Those issues are collected in Batman volume 3.
There were, of course, related stories in other titles. The complete "Death of the Family" story consists of 23 separate comics.
Yeah the main story is really good but the tie-in one is mediocre. Here's the Joker: Death of the Family I'm talking about: http://www.amazon.com/Joker-Death-Family-New-52/dp/140124646X/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&sr=&qid=
If anyone is interested, DC is now selling a box set that comes with the Death of the Family graphic novel along with this mask: http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Death-Family-Book-Joker/dp/1401249272/ref=pd_rhf_gw_p_img_1
I completely agree. I found one of the compandiums in a local store, picked it up and could never imagine actually reading it. Because of this, when I ordered the comics recently, I decided to go with the 12 issue collections. And they're hardcover, which is always nice.
The compendiums are okay, but being so thick the panels close to the spine are a bit hard to read and they're heavy. I would recommend getting the hardcover editions.
THIS IS YOUR BEST DEAL. PERIOD.
This is half of the series for only 35$. If you have Amazon Prime/Student, shipping is free. It would be 80$ to get the individual volumes that add up to the same amount of material.
Unfortunately, there is no second compendium yet, so you'll have to go the expensive route to buy the others. Do remember, though, that some libraries carry graphic novels, and that most bookstores will allow you to read their content in-stores without buying it. Since graphic novels read fast, this is a good way to get through material.
Compendium One and Two float around $35 on amazon. That's not bad for One that you can take home now.

Have you ever read the graphic novel series wytches?
https://www.amazon.com/Wytches-Vol-1-Scott-Snyder/dp/1632153807/ref=nodl_
I kill Giants, Black Hole, and V for Vendetta.
I've also been really enjoying the trade paperbacks for Chew, though I'm quite behind on those.
Charles Burns does some nice trippy stuff, you should definately check him out. I would recommend the X'ed out trilogy for maximum trippiness:

Black hole is also sweet:

edit.
If you're into surrealism you could look up Ed the Happy Clown by Chester Brown
http://www.amazon.com/Ed-Happy-Clown-Chester-Brown/dp/1770460756/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1414583044&sr=1-1&keywords=ed+the+happy+clown
From an Amazon customer's review:
"Yummy Fur focuses on Ed, a hapless clown living in a dystopian world filled with callous doctors, evil police and truly mad scientists. The story kicks in when Ed finds a severed hand under his bed, and mistaking it for something left by the tooth fairy, reports his findings to the police, only to be thrown in jail. What follows is a quick descent into a world filled with sewer dwelling pygmies, a beautiful vampire, a President from another dimension and an increasingly uncomfortable view of how inhuman man can really be."
Black Hole by Charles Burns.
If you want something really different, why not try something like this? Or this. Or this. Or this.
If you want to keep with the psycho Marvel character though, there simply is no other way to go than Deadpool Max (I think there are other available collections).
Any of these three series I recommend as modern-day Lord of the Rings classics
Eisenhorn, books 1-3 of a 9 book series are simply the best books I've ever read - the series is currently on book 7. I recommend Eisenhorn to anyone that just likes to read. Books 4-6 are just as good, called Ravenor, with the 7th book in the series now out, called Pariah.
Another amazing series of books I love are the Old Man's War books, effectively a series of 6 books with some short stories in between and the last book being broken up into thirteen short stories (such was the demand for the books while they were being written). Fantastic, fantastic series - I recommend them to anyone.
I also love and recommend The Dark Tower series, 7 books. They're the only thing written by King that I've liked.
FTFY
Johnny Bravo? Wasn't that a cartoon?
No, I'm talking about this by Jhonen Vasquez.
This reminds me of something that would be in Johnny The Homicidal Maniac haha. Which is an awesome comic if you've never read it, by Jhonen Vasquez

From Hell by Alan Moore
Maus by Art Spiegelman
This may be what you're looking for, but just a warning it's in the point of view of one of the Joker's henchmen.
Blackest Night and Green Lantern: Blackest Night.
Read the issues in (I think) this order:
GL 43, BN 0, BN 1, GL 44, BN 2, GL 45, BN 3, GL 46, BN 4, GL 47, GL 48, BN 5, GL 49, BN 6, GL 50, GL 51, BN 7, GL 52, BN 8
You might want to double-check on the reading order though, mine might not be quite right.
EDIT: Oh, and you could also get Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps, it's not necessary though. It takes place right before Blackest Night and is basically just an anthology of origin stories for various new characters from the various Lantern Corps that Johns introduced in his run. But it does feature the introduction of the Indigo Tribe, the seventh Lantern Corps.
You want to read

Honestly just read all of Geoff Johns gl run, but that s the bare skeleton for your rainbow lanterns
edit: 29-35 is just an origin story for hal jordan. read it or not. doesnt matter too much
Alright OP, here's what I've got for you:
Good luck reading OP! Feel free to ask any questions.
No because it collects Blackest Night and Green Lantern blackest night which as you can see is far cheaper to buy them individually and even get more issues in the GL Blackest Night than is included in the Absolute. If it included the Gl Corps Blackest Night and Black Lantern books it would be worth it, but you could probably buy used paperback versions of all of them for less than the absolute.
Yes that is it! I don't know anything about the boxed set but I wouldn't be surprised if it was out there. This is the Batman storyline, although it looks like each of the other series (Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood, etc...) have trades for this storyline as well.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/1401242340/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_Ohxstb13K8HAG
fuuuuck, I did not know this existed (or will exist, as it seems), although the hardcover I bought with the joker face coming off dust jacket is pretty awesome.
It appears they are doing that with New 52. The first runs have been collected via Batman Vol. 1: Court of Owls (Batman #1-7), Batman: Night of Owls, (Batman #8-9 + assorted Bat family titles) and Batman Vol. 2: City of Owls (Batman #8-12 + Annual #1).
Batman #13-17 will be collected in Batman Vol 3: Death of the Family and its accompanying stories in Joker: Death of the Family.
The tie in issues for Death of the Family are collected in Joker: Death of the Family The quality is a little hit and miss, but the tie ins for Batman and Robin and Nightwing were particularly good. I also enjoyed the Red Hood and Teen Titans ones, though I have heard many disagreements.
That would be The Joker: Death of the Family
Haha, believe me there are better people on this sub who could answer, I've only been reading consistently since the NEW52 started, before that I would grab a trade every couple of months and was out of the loop for the most part, I kept up by reading wiki pages though (www.dc.wikia.com is a great resource)
In terms of crossovers, there isn't much that's missed outside of the main Batman run (Snyder's run) as it's pretty self contained, the tie in issues were just little bits of extra that you could read to see what was happening in other books at the time, they're nice to read, but not necessary, there were 2 hardcovers that contained the tie ins for Court of Owls and Death of the Family
Batman: Night of the Owls has all the tie ins, but not the main story
Joker: Death of the Family has all the tie ins but again, none of the main story
The first few issues of Nightwing, I believe 1 to 8, could be considered part of the Court of Owls event, but again, it isn't necessary
The only thing you need to read for Snyder's Batman events are just the main Batman run, everything else is "supplementary" as they add on, rather than provide important details to the story
Endgame is happening now as you know, and the tie ins are just events happening on the side while Endgame goes on, but the tie ins are coming out this month (March), there are 4 titles that tie in (Arkham Manor, Batgirl, Detective Comics and Gotham Academy)
Again to re-iterate, if you've been reading Snyder's run completely, then you haven't lost anything, everything else just adds on
Hopefully this helps!
On Amazon they cost about £10, I can't remember how much they cost in Waterstones, I think it's about £13.99. For Flash you should pick up volumes 1-4, make sure you get the new volumes as there were two volumes before New 52 called Dastardly Death of the Rogues and Road to Flashpoint, and you will probably be lost if you read them. Flash changes writer after Volume 4 and it gets awful. Batman is pretty good from Volumes 1-10, however you could skip 4-6 if you're on a budget, 4-5 are a retelling of Batmans origin and 6 is just filler issues that hadnt been collected in trades.
If you go on Amazon and look at other sellers for the item you will be able to get it New slightly cheaper, Amazon sells Flash for £12.99 but other sellers sell them for about £5+P&P

Batman Volume 8 has only just come out so it will be more expensive and Volumes 9-10 will be out later this year
This includes the tie-ins of Death of the Family arc, which is the story of vol. 3. You should've gotten this.
For Flash:
Barry Allen started his carrier in the comics in 1959 until 1985 and then he was absent on until 2009. His modern-age series called The Flash: Rebirth when he returned. After that 2 trades came (In comics, a trade paperback (often shortened to trade) is a collection of stories originally published in comic books, reprinted in book format, usually capturing one story arc from a single title or a series of stories with a connected story arc or common theme.) called The Flash Vol. 1: The Dastardly Death of the Rogues and The Flash Vol. 2: The Road to Flashpoint.
After these, a HUGE event came that changed everything called Flashpont that "reset" the continuity and started the New 52 age and it's first story-line called The Flash, Vol. 1: Move Forward . This series (New52) lasted till Spring 2016 and collected 9 trades (the show you watched is based on this era). In early 2016 DC Rebirth came (only name change, everything is continued from New52) but a huge exception: a long missing character came back to the grand scene who was missing for so long. Rebirth's first trade is The Flash Vol. 1: Lightning Strikes Twice
So if you are interested in Barry (overall) start with The Flash: Rebirth and move onward to Flashpont, but you can just start with The Flash, Vol. 1: Move Forward or DC Rebirth and The Flash Vol. 1: Lightning Strikes Twice, then read everything up to today. (there was a Flash event called Flash War which ended a few months ago)
(there is an omnibus on sale at the moment (a collection of multiple trades) called The Flash By Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato Omnibus that collects the first 4 trades of the New 52 era.
For Superman:
His New 52 story wasn't that great (if you ask 10 people, almost 9 of them will tell you that you should skip that era), but there are 3 "essential" TPBs in that period of time:
Superman: The Men of Tomorrow by Geoff Johns
Lois Lane and Clark
Superman: The Final Days of Superman
After these, you can start with Superman Vol. 1: Son Of Superman and move forward with the volumes until a strange storyline called Superman:Reborn that ends the Final Days of Superman story. Rebirth's final TPB called Superman Vol. 7: Bizarroverse (not out yet), which is followed by a fresh new start called The Man of Steel that kicks out Superman #1 (remember, we started from New 52, yet Superman: Reborn came along)
(but if you want a full reading, you can easily start with Superman Vol. 1: What Price Tomorrow? New 52 TPB.)
About Action Comics: compared to Superman solo series, Action Comics is more about Metropolis and things happening NOT JUST with Superman, but with his friends and family etc. The first 3 volumes of New 52 were fantastic, written by Grant Morrison (starting with [Action Comics Vol. 1: Superman and the Men of Steel] (https://www.amazon.com/Superman-Action-Comics-Vol-Steel/dp/1401235476/ ) but overall the whole New 52 was a decent run.
After New 52, Rebirth's first volume's called Action Comics Vol. 1: Path Of Doom
For Aquaman:
I highly recommend starting with New 52 and move forward to Rebirth and more, as it is a great adventure seeing Aquaman in action during that period of time, lots of fun and interesting stories.
New 52 first volume/TPB called Aquaman Vol. 1: The Trench
Rebirth first volume called Aquaman Vol. 1: The Drowning
Also have to mention that the new movie coming out soon is LOOSLY (not entirely, but still) based on the story-line called Aquaman Vol. 3: Throne of Atlantis (new52)
For Batman:
There is a new kind of book format coming out just now called "Essential Edition" which is basically pack of 2 (or more) volumes/TPBs in 1 book.
Batman's story starts WAY before New 52 (his and Green Lantern's history wasn't "deleted", so everything happened in the past, is still here with us), so it is advisable to start at least Year One, then jump into New 52 via Batman: The Court of Owls Saga (DC Essential Edition) , which is followed by a great arc called Batman Vol. 3: Death of the Family and others as well. It is highly recommend to read through the whole New 52 series, as it is a MASTERPIECE!
Rebirth starts with Batman Vol. 1: I Am Gotham
Just like Action Comics is connected to Superman, here Detective Comics connected with Batman. Detective Comics is about the Bat-family operating in Gotham City, solving mysteries etc.
New 52 first TPB Detective Comics Vol. 1: Faces of Death
Rebirth first TPB Detective Comics Vol. 1: Rise of the Batmen
For Green Lantern:
Just like Batman, Green Lantern's story wasn't deleted prior New 52, everything that happened BEFORE, is still here with is (even today). Yet you don't have to start at the very beginning, there is a really respectable writer called Geoff Johns (mentioned earlier) who started to write Green Lantern back in 2005 (long time ago) and his work laid down the basics of the mythos around the Lantern Corps, the different rings, lot of intergalactic battles etc.
His first work was Green Lantern: Rebirth, followed by many over the years. I mentioned the Omnibus format back at The Flash, for Green Lantern it is highly recommended to get through his story (as it is a HUGE connected story from the Green Lantern Rebirth) via those books
Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol. 1
Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol. 2
Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol. 3
After these, the overall story continues in the Green Lantern: Rise of the Third Army and Green Lantern: The Wrath of the First Lantern TPBs.
Just like Action Comics and Detective Comics, there is a companion series for the "main" Green Lantern books, called Green Lantern Corps. Before New 52, the old TPBs weren't reprinted, so it is hard to collect that era (starts with Green Lantern Corps Vol. 1: To Be a Lantern ) but the New 52 books are much more widely available. The first one is Green Lantern Corps Vol. 1: Fearsome.
After New 52, the "main" Green Lantern book becomes Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps Vol. 1: Sinestro's Law and the Green Lantern Corps to Green Lanterns Vol. 1: Rage Planet.
Wow it is a huge list and lot of stuff. I missed a few things, but even if you start reading these, you won't be disappointed for a while. (and when you're not sure how/where to next, just ask me or anyone here on Reddit). For the buying process: there are a few options: local comic shop (LCS), amazon, ebay, https://www.speedyhen.com/ (if you are UK based), http://bookdepository.com/, https://www.instocktrades.com/ for starters.
Hope this helps!
OP, this is the version you want. It is what was published under the "Batman" line in the New 52 by Scott Snyder. It is the main storyline, and it tells a complete story.
You do not need this version to understand the full story. Yes, it contains more issues, but that's due to a marketing push by DC, where they believed if they published more stories attached to the main Batman title (i.e. Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood/Teen Titans, Harley, Catwoman, etc. so not under the "Batman" title), they could make more sales, but they aren't all necessarily good or needed to understand the main body of work.
I hope this clears things up, as I saw a variety of comments in this thread.
Adding on to what /u/petrofire said, he is specifically referring to Trade Paperbacks (TPB's) when he talks about volumes. You can get it on amazon for pretty cheap.
New 52 is the name of the current run for all the DC characters. You'll want "Batman." Issues 13-17 are Death of the Family. This is an important distinction from Death in the Family. You can find this as a trade paperback. Joker has come back starting with issue 35 of Batman for the "Endgame" plot line. It's three issues in as of now, and really awesome. You should be able to find all the issues that are available now at your local comic shop. Hope this helps!
Here are the Amazon links for both: Batman Vol. 3: Death of the Family, The Joker: Death of the Family. As DementiaPrime said, you only need the first one to get the full plot, but the second one adds some tie-ins to the story by other authors and sometimes focused on other characters.
As far as I know, and I hope I'm right because that's how I'm buying them, the graphic novels (Court of Owls, City of Owls, Death of the Family, and Zero-Year - Secret City) are mostly complete. There are three issues that come between Death of the Family and Zero Year - Secret City that are not included in either. To be honest, I don't know how much they contribute to any story arc because I have had some trouble finding them online. I'm waiting until I can get back home from college to try to find them in store. Amazon tells you which issues are included in each graphic novel in the description of the product.
Court of Owls
The City of Owls
Death of the Family
Zero Year - Secret City
Additionally, click here for the complete list of the issues published in the New 52 Batman so you know what is not included in the graphic novels. I hope this helps!
Edit: After looking at some other threads in this sub I found this site. You can buy a digital copy of each issue individually in case they are not included in the graphic novel volumes.
Sure, here. https://www.amazon.com/Batman-Vol-Family-Comics-Paperback/dp/1401246028
There are a number of different batman new 52 titles. The one titled "Batman" is just a general Batman title and is the main story.
"Batman Detective Comics" embraces more of the detective side of Batman as he solves cases.
"Batman and..." has Batman teaming up with someone to take down different bad guys with a partner.
The other Bat family titles are just individual characters. While sometimes Batman will be featured in those stories, he is not the prominent figure there.
As for Death of the Family, just reading the "Batman" title will give you the full story. The tie ins are nice but you don't really need them to get the full story. Mostly it's just one or two issues alluding to what's happening. If you want you can get [Death of the Family] (http://www.amazon.com/The-Joker-Death-Family-New/dp/140124646X/) which will give you all the tie ins. Personally, I didn't get it and didn't find it necessary.
The best Batman title is the one you're reading, "Batman". The quality however, is very good on all of them, so I would recommend all three I mentioned above.
Couldn't he also get the DotF tpb and the joker dotf books to cover everything in the arc?
I guess it is my job to be the one to recommend Batwoman: Elegy and Batwoman New 52 Vols. 1-4.
Also Catwoman Vol 6: Keeper of the Castle (and Vol 7 when that gets released, as its the second part of Valentine's incredible run). If you plan on reading Batman Eternal it might spoil some stuff for you, but please love yourself and read this incredible run.
While we're sticking to Batfamily, Batgirl Vol 1-5 ("The Darkest Reflection" and up, since you're starting from the beginning of New 52). You can skip 3, as its Death Of The Family and you're probably going to end up buying the collected version which features every batfam member's tie-ins.
My wife came up behind me and scared the crap out of me when I was playing this game in VR. Wasn't cool. However I am going to purchase this mask and wake her up in the middle of the night by standing close to her: https://www.amazon.com/Batman-Death-Family-Book-Joker/dp/1401249272
Damn that mask is sick, that would be awesome to own. And after a quick google search it would appear that you can already preorder the Death of the Family and Joker Mask set on amazon for only $25. I knew holding off on picking this story up would pay off eventually.
Then you may be interested in this, if you haven't seen it already

Oooooh, just found out there is now a Deathstroke comic mask combo.
this should satisfy the Graphic Novels/Zombie/Pop culture hints/tips !
thanks!
You should check out the Walking Dead Compendium One and Two. One is the first 48 issues of the comics and Two is issues 49-96! Or...The Walking Dead Book One is the first 12 issues and each consecutive book is the next 12. I think they also offer 4 issue volumes. The story line is waaay more brutal. I'd send you my collection, but I only have 100-136...and issue 100 is a game changer and could spoil the show... so don't start there lol
I really liked World War Z, so if you're a fan of that I suggest you check out The Walking Dead.
There is 22 volumes of the graphic novel currently (the graphic novels contain 6 issues of the comic per book, there are also hardcovers which contain 12 issues, and the compendiums contain 48 issues).
If you're like me and prefer physical media you can also get them on Amazon.
> instocktrades.com
it's only cheaper if you spend more than 50 to get free shipping.
instocktrades: $20.29 + $4 S&H = $24.29
amazon: $22.94 with normal shipping or $24.26 with Prime
or this or maybe this
Walking Dead. Zombies n shit.
Team Daryl! While I am here, I am looking for a post apocalyptic book by Margaret Atwood I think is the author. Anyone know of her writing/if she did a post apocalyptic book? It's been heavily suggested I just don't think to add it to my WL everytime I come across it.
Here's how my comic shop sold me... Walking Dead #7 just came out along with the graphic novel collection of #1-6. They put one in my box and said "If you don't like it, we'll buy it back."
I was sold.
Start with the first collection. It's $9 on Amazon. If you hate it, I'll send you an $10 Amazon card.

Not sure - is the compendium the same as the volumes? I've got volumes 1-4 with Vol 1 being "Days Gone Bye". I'm not sure if those are the same things.
I've only read Vol 1 but it's been awhile. I stopped because the comics progress WAY faster than the series and I didn't really want to get ahead of the show and spoil anything. I've been LOVING the show this season and can't wait for the restart.
Start with this
Follow the reading order
we have very similar tastes. check some of these out... the first 2 would be great ones to ask for, since they are a little pricier.

Wytches. It's a graphic novel by Scott Snyder and Jock.
Introduction to Comics
How to Get Into Comic Books (13:40) | Patrick Willems
Consider your intent/commitment. Think about your favorite shows, movies, books, etc. Reading primarily for enjoyment or encyclopedic knowledge? Collecting? Have the time/resources to read 50 or 500 comics per character?
Don’t try to read everything at once. There’s too much. Forget about catching up, continuity, universes, etc. for now. Older comics can be an acquired taste for modern audiences, so they aren’t necessarily ideal starting points. Writers change often, characters get re-worked, and origins are re-told. Remember, there are many great characters, creators, publishers, etc. to explore.
Pick an interesting character/team and seek their most popular/acclaimed stories. Focus on self-contained, complete stories in one corner of the universe. There will be unexplained references/characters, just persevere or Wiki. Don’t let the tangled web of shared-universe comics overwhelm you. Think of it like solving a jigsaw puzzle one small piece at a time until you finally see the big picture.
Discover your preferences and let them guide you. Don’t get stuck preparing/over-analyzing, just start reading. Do you like/dislike old/new comics? Specific writers/genres? Cartoony/realistic art? Familiar/weird concepts? References/self-contained? All-ages/mature content? Follow these instincts. Didn’t understand a reference? Maybe read that next.
Acquire/Buy comics:
Marvel
DC
You can skip to the 2016 re-launch with DC Universe: Rebirth and then any Rebirth series #1.

I absolutely loved the first one. Second one was second rate, IMO, but I had some fun watching it. Found out that the first one is based more heavily on the comic, which is a pretty awesome read if you're interested.
I think the best way is pick up a time machine and went back to 1992 so you can enjoy all the hype.
JK, but the first issue is the best start point (you also have the collected editon ). It is still a fun read (and remember, the Billy Kincaid issue was the way of Todd McFarlane show his middle finger and say "Here I don't have the censure that I had in Marvel").
I think Amazon had one for around $30.
Is this the right Spawn paperback to start with?
I tried looking for "Spawn Volume 1" but couldn't find anything.
I'll also look into the punisher.
Thanks
I'm not sure why no one mention buying the first [Compendium] (http://www.amazon.com/The-Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1408025050&sr=8-1&keywords=walking+dead+compendium) to start with In my opinion, this is the obvious and most fiscal choice. It collects the first 48 issues for only $35 on amazon. That's $0.73 per issue. Versus hopping on at the current spot for $2.99 per issue. This is an absolute no brainer. This will give you hours of entertainment cheaply, and you'll know whether you want to continue the series after reading it. Honestly, you're not to far behind to catch up. Walking Dead is a very quick read. I'm talking like 8-10 minutes per issue. So that's like 21 hours to read all the way up to the current issue.

Walking Dead Compendium One.
Walking Dead Compendium Two.
As it turns out, they're both on as massive discount.
He means each volume of the compendiums. Compendium 1 is 1,088 pages. Compendium 2 is 1,068 pages.
Definately Team - biggest kick ass ever - Daryl! and I think you should allow me to get a physical book too :) because you love me and you can even get me This book ;)
You should, they really are excellent and you can you can pick up the bulk of it in 2 books. Compendium 1 and 2.
$34 for 48 issues/8 trades. This got me hooked.
After watching the first season I also, jumped into the books. I would highly recommend starting with The compendium. This is a GREAT price, I think I purchased it for $50 and it was well worth the cost. This has a great collection of the first books and leaves you yearning for more after the last page.
For Brits, The Walking Dead Compendium (collecting #1-48) is already on a pretty good price on amazon - all that zombie goodness for only £25.79.
EDIT: For the record, I'm not advertising or anything, I just saw a pretty good deal and thought I'd share. It does sound a little spamalicious though, on reflection.
There's some smaller collections and then there's a $60 compendium of the first 48 issues.
[Amazon has it for $35 :]](http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321506198&sr=8-1)

> Is there a date for these yet or is it just September? Will they all release the same week in September or will they all start on different dates?
Here's a list of the New 52. Each week there will be about 10-15 new books being released in September (protip: go to your lcbs and there is a free book of the New 52 with every series being released, some art, and a synopsis of each new book. There's also each release date within).
Here's a link of each release date. Coincidentally (I googled it and this just happened to be the first link) Maximum Comics is my local shop. I love that place.
Anyway, I'd suggest you pick up Justice League of America as well. It's coming out Aug. 31st and is the inaugural book for the new 52 relaunch.
One last thing, go to your comic shop asap and add whatever titles you want to your pull list. If you don't have one, find a comic shop that does pull lists (or pull boxes) for their customers. Most should. (a pull list basically when you want to "subscribe" to a comic, they reserve you a copy and put in your 'pull box' when it's released. It also gives the shop a better gauge on how many books to order of each series each month).
> Are these comics going to be a weekly or monthly release?
No comic is weekly, that's a shit load of work. Each series will be monthly. But then again, you never know. Uncanny X-Force was bi-weekly for a while, but then you have Millar's Kick Ass 2 which has been out for almost a year and isn't even on issue 3 yet (really pisses a lot of fans off).
Also, since you're new to comics, I cannot stress to you enough how important it is that you start reading Walking Dead. I don't care what excuses you may have for not reading it yet (if any), put those sorry's in a sack and start reading it. Here's a link to the first 48 issues in a massive compendium.
Walking Dead Compendium One from kirakaydawn's wishlist (yeah you!). This is one of my favorite comics and you really should get it. It sucked me in and had me emotional over the characters.
I don't know anything about you, but from the looks of your reddit history, you're 21 (i think), you have a best friend named Emma, and you're an aussie. Wow that sounds creepy.
The Walking Dead Compendium
If he likes beer at all, maybe a home brewing kit?
I.d. shows... hmmm if he has a ps3 maybe heavy rain?

if you are interesting in buying it after reading the wiki this is the best bang for your buck
The Walking Dead Compendium(Chapters 1-48)
There's the iOS app and then there is the comics, books, novels, and compendiums. If you do not have any of the comics yet, I suggest picking the compendium up
http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760
Just saying.
Compendium 2 should be not too far around the corner also since issue 96 is coming right up.
http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760
Me too, absolutely love the first two. I did find this at the library though, it's the first 4 books in one.
If you buy the compendium, she is introduced about halfway through it -- right after they get to the prison. You will fly through that thing. Second one should be coming soon. On Amazon I've seen the price of Compendium One fluctuate a lot and have seen it as low as $20.
From here

yes go buy the compendium its the first 48 issues in one book
Dammit Europe...
Please don't torrent it. I may get hate for this, but I think we should be showing our appreciation to Kirkman for what he is doing. Torrenting music or movies from large industries is one thing; they don't need the extra 99 cents. But Kirkman is just one comic book writer with a brilliant story. If you can afford it, please buy the compendium.
http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330666477&sr=8-1
Best bang for your buck if you are short on cash. Amazon ships everywhere. $35-$40 total for the first 48 issues. It's a steal and the perfect jumping on point on a budget.
There are compendiums, but I enjoy seeing the color cover art for each issue as I read them.
2 weeks ago a bought Compendium 1 and could not put it down. I read the entire thing in two sittings. I would always recommend starting from the beginning as it lets you get a proper feel for the tone of the comics compared to the show. There's a lot that is the same but an equal amount that is different.
The Walking Dead Compendium Volume 1 https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1607060760/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_E8u-wb1T7BB5Q
Already bought the rest and absolutely plan on powering through them as soon as they arrive.
I'm not sure what they would be like on a Kindle. I love my Kindle but haven't got any graphic novels on it yet.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760
Cheaper than an eighth.
Depends on what his tastes tend towards - my nephew was pretty thrilled with Bone (this one might be a bit young for your nephew's tastes - I think it's geared towards the 10-12 demographic), The Walking Dead (I always buy the compendiums, I like to devour as much as possible all at once - but if you're not sure he'd like it, I'd start with just one or two volumes), and this year I've gotten him East of West.
Chew is a really neat series as well, although I haven't tested it out on my nephew yet - I think it might be a bit too old for him.
I also liked Iron West if you want to go with a one-off instead of a series.
Depending on his parents, I'd check to see if they consider the Walking Dead and/or Chew to be age appropriate or not. I haven't read through East of West yet, but it's rated for mature teens so should be in the ballpark for your nephew.
Eep! I would love some of your art, you're fantastic!
Thank you in advance for the contest! It's so great of you to offer.
EDIT IF I WIN CAN I PLEASE HAVE A TOTORO PAINTING!?!?!

Favourite item: Walking Dead Compendium Volume 1 because zombies are awesome
Weirdest item: Hmm... Maybe Cards Against Humanity, only because you have to have a weird sense of humour to enjoy it.
I personally would recommend you pick up the comic from issue one. With compendium 1 and read the entire series.
The story is different enough that you will still be surprised by a lot of the story. Additional, Kirkman writes many of his surprises after a page turn, so you never see it coming.
I have reread the series from issue one twice now, I have single issues since 78 I think, picked up the earlier issues via compendiums.
90-110 is an incredible run with the introduction of the saviors and Negan. Issue #161 just came out on Wednesday and the story telling is still so strong.
Get him the 'Walking Dead Compendium"

You can get Compendium One for $36 at Amazon. Compendium Two (which covers the second eight voumes) will be released in October, or you could buy the volumes individually.

You can get the The Walking Dead: Compendium One on amazon for around $35.00 which is probably about the cheapest you're going to be able to get it.
Another option would be hit up your local subreddit were you live and see if someone would be willing to loan you the book.
so you reckon I should get this one: http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1291040363&sr=8-1

The problem with my nearest comic shop is that probably they don't have comics in english, but only in italian (I'm from italy).
Here's the first compendium. It's huge and contains a whole collection of the comics (I think it's issues 1-49, but I could be wrong). Amazon also sells the second compendium, and soon there will be a third. You could also buy the comics in volume collections, which are smaller and easier to handle, but they cost more than the compendiums.
Here is the mobile version of your link
Nothing like the comics, and as crushing as her death on the show was, it was much more WTF in the comics... but for other reasons.
Read the comics though!

These will get you pretty far into the comics
They're available on Amazon if you feel like staying home and having them delivered to you.
I assume you're not interested in them for collecting reasons, so I would suggest ordering The Walking Dead Compendium 1, which covers all the way until the end of the prison arc. Then if you want continue you can order Compendium 2, which covers the story to most likely the end of season 5.
From there you will have to start buying smaller collected editions to continue, starting with the Deluxe Edition vol. 9.

Compendium 2 - Issues 49-96
Compendium 3 - Issues 97-144
You could always get him the second TWD compendium. Amazon has it for $37.
If you're looking for something non-TWD and more self-contained, Ennis's War Stories are also non-cape, dark, style-consistent works. Each book has a few short stories that don't require additional context, and don't add to later stories. There's two trades that were form the mid-aughts out now, and two more coming out next year as something of a series revival.

Thanks for the contest! <3!
Bought mine on Amazon (with free shipping). On amazon US the paperback version is at $13.59 by amazon. One seller sells it $5.39 but I'm not sure about the shipping. It says $27.99 but I'm living in France, so this must change with your location. Many other sellers sell used versions (in good condition) around $5.50 and $3.99 of shipping (and all sellers have very positive rate).
I am a book lover and I sometimes I can buy 20 or 30 books per month, and I regularly buy used books on amazon (more particularly architecture and painting books because the edition I want is no longer printed) and honestly 95% of time they are like brand new.

American Dreams actually served as the conceptual skeleton for Left Behind. You'll recognize some of the minor characters and scenes.
That being said, personally I thought it was nice, but a bit underwhelming after experiencing the storytelling tour-de-force that was the video game.

This is similar to the art and somewhat to the theme of the graphic novel Black Hole by Charles Burns. It's a really cool and somewhat creepy read.
I was amazed when I found out there was a The Stand graphic novel, and then even more blown away by the existence of The Dark Tower in graphic novel form.

https://www.amazon.com/Dark-Tower-Omnibus-Stephen-King/dp/0785155414
I'm squirreling away some funds for this gem.
It's complete and available on amazon, I got my copy around Christmas time. It covers everything from The Gunslinger Born through The Battle of Jericho Hill, which as far as I know is everything.
Supposedly there's another run being made of The Gunslinger, but I haven't seen it yet to be able to confirm anything, and even if that is the case, it's basically a different series. The omnibus covers all of the prequel stuff.
Here's an Amazon link to it: http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Tower-Omnibus-Stephen-King/dp/0785155414/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368494339&sr=8-1&keywords=dark+tower+omnibus
Enjoy!
Thank you! It's Sickness from I Feel Sick and the vines are from JTHM.
Iiiiiiii'mCATBUUUGGG!!!
I just started the keto diet yesterday!
ok so this is just a shot in the dark but when ever I see people talk about Graphic Novels THIS always comes to mind! I love Jhonen Vasquez's work (come on Invader ZIM?) well Johnny The Homicidal Maniac is much darker than zim but super good! and there are 2 spinoffs that I know about [I feel sick] (http://www.amazon.com/Feel-Sick-Book-About-Girl/dp/B001VD1FZY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1396454824&sr=8-2&keywords=I+feel+sick) there is only 2 comics for that one and there is Squee's Wonderful Big Giant Book of Unspeakable Horrors and that in a way is a sequel to JTHM.
I don't know much in the way of this topic, but I can't go without mentioning the awesomeness of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac.
I recommend Alan Moore's hugely ambitious graphic novel From Hell. The sheer size and scope of the work is staggering. Moore explores the case of Jack The Ripper with an obsessive frenzy (hinted at in Eddie Campbell's scratched-ink illustrations).
You should definitely read From Hell if you haven't.
Mother, Come Home by Paul Hornschemeier is amazing. I teared up for hours.
I'll add another recommendation for Blankets by Craig Thompson. It was life-changing for me. Also Good-bye, Chunky Rice and Carnet De Voyage by him as well.
Much of Neil Gaiman's stuff is really amazing. Once it gets going the Sandman series gets really good.
Alan Moore also has a ton of... 'interesting' stuff. I adore him but some people think he gets far to weird. From Hell is an interesting look at Jack the Ripper. The Promethea series by him literally (and yes, I do mean that in the correct way) knocked me out of my chair at one point. The 'shell' story is proto-typical superheroics, but that's just some trappings to walk you through a long (2 years of monthly issues or so) mixed media rumination on magic, life, sex, gender, imagination, creation, and how they all feed interrelate. Filled to the brim with very interesting ideas and frequently presented in amazingly innovative ways. Nobody else pushes both the form and the content of comics at the same time the way Moore does.
That's a start.. if you gives me/us an idea of what you didn't like as well there might be some more suggestions that pop to mind.
Good choice.
I'd also recommend (in no particular order):
Aaand...that's it...those are all the Batman comics I've read. *sob*
Also, it includes a really fucking epic fight between Batman and Supes. It's really good. If end up reading and enjoying it, the same team did a book called Joker, which is sort of supposed to take place in the Nolan-verse after Dark Knight.
You should read the comics man. There is some good shit there. Check out Brian Azerello's Joker
http://www.amazon.com/Joker-Brian-Azzarello/dp/1401215815
An idea of where they rank here
Being a big fan of the Joker myself... couple of recommendations on that front...
The Killing Joke
Considered by many to be one of the best Joker stories around... A pretty twisted story, very dark subject matter. The Joker's idea/plan is to prove that it only takes one really bad day to drive someone insane. This was also used as a theme of the Joker in Nolan's The Dark Knight
The Joker
A noir-esque take on the Batman mythos... Worth the read if you're looking for something a bit different...
Batman: A Death in the Family
Another somewhat darker story... this one is the [spoiler](Death of Jason Todd/Robin) and the Joker plays a very central role in it all
Also, there's a comic "companion" to the Arkham games...
Issue 1
Issue 2
Issue 3
Issue 4
I really dig the cover art for issue 3... be sure to check that one out
Hope this helps a little
The Joker: A Celebration of 75 Years is basically a collection of stories about him
Joker by Brian Azarello is a standalone about him.
The Death of the Family arc is about him
A Death in the Family features him
that's all I can think of off the top of my head
Amazon
Comixology
Some scans that showcase the art
This is from the graphic novel Joker.
Joker's new henchman Johnny (the main character of the story) just stumbled across this as he was walking through their "HQ" one evening.
It's exactly what it looks like, Joker is sobbing and clinging to Harley in a room full of drugs.
I think the implication is that he might be a little unstable.
Joker by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo.
Judging by your collection, I think you'd really like Black Hole (amzn link).
Hmm, have you read Stitches? That's another favorite of mine. I'd also rec Vietnamerica, Castle Waiting, Black Hole, and Two Generals. And Bone is long but very awesome if you want to get in touch with your inner kid.
That is pretty much the extent of my graphic novel rec list, I honestly read way more manga and webcomics. If you want some help in those areas, I'd also be happy to oblige!
that stupid face reminds me of the teenage abominations from the comic Black Hole
Habibi by Craig Thompson (and Blankets, for that matter). A visually stunning story of 2 child slaves attempting to reconnect and survive, set in an approximately modern, unnamed 3rd world country. Very much an exploration of sex and love.
The Invisibles by Grant Morrison. Incredibly strange story of a group of 90's counter-culture anarchists looking to overthrow the literal dark forces that are attempting to control the world. Something of a "What if every conspiracy theory was true?" It sounds right up your alley, as it explores class, race, gender, and sexuality through the group's unique perspective. It has a little bit of a slow roll, but begs to be picked up after around 100 pages. I've linked the omnibus, which is a bit unwieldy, so you may prefer to collect it by volumes.
Black Hole by Charles Burns. A physically deforming STD begins to infect high school students in a suburban town. This book is an uneasy, beautiful reflection of high school cruelty.
Epileptic by David B. A sad autobiography of growing up with an epileptic brother who does not get the medical attention he needs. The book is translated from French and takes place in small town France. David B. pulls no punches, this story is honest and heart-breaking, interesting not only for the stark look at a misunderstood disorder, but for the brutal confrontation with David's childhood.
I'll also second Asterios Polyp and Transmetropolitan.
Which is the best Uzumaki, Gyo or Tomie?
I did pick up Blackhole last year which is not really about interdimensional gods or anything but has some truly bizarre artwork.
It's a reference to Black Hole by Charles Burns, a comic book where kids at a high school pass around an STD that makes you grow another mouth somewhere on your body.
http://www.amazon.com/Black-Hole-Charles-Burns/dp/0375714723
I know you said you're listening to the main novels via audiobook, but I'd just like to mention that the comic book adaptations do a great job of clarifying the backstory. The first 30 issues all take place prior to The Gunslinger, and cover both the material from Wizard and Glass as well as other aspects of Roland's backstory which are only mentioned or hinted at in the novels. What's more, I don't think anything in them is really a spoiler for the further novels (there's a short flashback in Wolves of the Calla which the comics also incorporate, but it doesn't give anything new away to know ahead of time). The first 30 issues as well as a ton of bonus materials are available in a great hardcover omnibus edition; here's an Amazon link, though I believe it can be had for closer to $65 on eBay. It's close to a thousand pages total, and the bonus materials in the Companion book seem really cool too though I haven't gotten around to reading them in full (though those are probably best saved for after finishing the main novels, since it includes things like a world gazetteer which includes things not encountered until the final book).
I'm not usually a big fan of comics, but these are really well done, and the Omnibus editions have a great value for the price if you like the Dark Tower series, and especially if you're interested in seeing more of Roland's backstory fleshed out (including things like the Fall of Gilead, which you won't find elsewhere).

Wow I have a ton of awesome recommendations, but first and foremost is the Sandman saga by Neil Gaiman or really anything distributed under Vertigo, they publish all DC comic's darker novels...
Also Watchmen, a classic by Alan Moore...
Johnny The Homicidal Maniac (JTHM) by Johnen Vasquez
Blankets by Craig Thompson...
Scott Pilgrim series...
Fahrenheit 451 graphic novel adaptation...

My grandfather took me to see every single new Star Wars movie because when I was a kid (4 or 5) he introduced me to them ^ _ ^ No matter my feelings on the prequels, I'll always enjoy looking back at those times.
Also: All my JTHM comics have mysteriously disappeared into the ether, so this is my request, The Director's Cut

Have you read Moore's From Hell?
I read this right after I read Watchmen. Not quite as good, but close. Also, the movie based on it is pretty good. Again, not quite as good as Watchmen, but close.
OT: I'm new to this sub, is it ok to ask questions about books written about Batman and stuff in this sub?
I'm looking at buying these two

That's because The Dark Knight Returns is the only good part in that story in my opinion and worth a read. After that it got way too far out there. I hated Strikes Back, and am not going to read Master Race.
Azzarello wrote two graphic novels that made me a fan of him one is called Joker (a heavy influence on the Joker of TDK nolan film) and Lex Luthor: Man of Steel. In the same vein of Joker. Essentially they are character pieces.
http://www.amazon.com/Joker-Brian-Azzarello/dp/1401215815

Luthor actually made me appreciate the character for having something deeper to motivate him than the old "I hate Superman because he messes with my plans" sctick.
There was a great one-shot by Brian Azzarello about a schmuck hood who ends up running with the Joker and predictably ends up regretting it at several opportunities.
Check it out
I also see we like the same things! ( hi fives fellow batfan) you don't appear to have "The Joker" by Brian Azzarello You don't have this? http://www.amazon.com/dp/1401215815/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_img?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2ILELAA49LHM0&coliid=I1AHPPOLKNQDB9
Edit to add, my wish list has now grown a WHOLE LOT by looking at yours ! :P LOL
Batman: Hush is fantastic, though not technically a stand-alone graphic novel, just a trade, but well worth the read regardless.
If you want a very real and raw vision of the Batman villains I highly recommend Joker by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo
Also, like others have suggested, Kingdom Come is great and I also found Marvels to be very very good.
Hope you find some good reads!
There's a comic based on this called Joker. It's from the perspective of one of his new thugs but it's great.
Not Batman exactly but the Joker was one I really liked.
Superman: Red Son
All Star Superman
Superman: American Alien
Batman and Superman Number One
Throne of Atlantis from Justice League and Aquaman
If you haven't yet Watchmen is a must for any reader, comics or not
Anything Geoff Johns wrote for Green Lantern (Frankly anything he's written for DC). He has 3 Omnibuses (Very Large Collections with MANY stories). Particularly look for:
Green Lantern Rebirth
Flash Rebirth
Flashpoint
Blackest Night
In Brightest Day
Geoff Johns Omnibuses
Or always Peruse other Trades/Omnibuses to see what piques your interest
Also, I know it's a DC sub, but if you're okay with adult themes: Saga
This video always works for my girlfriend. If you want more the full show is on netflix under the title "Too Cute!"
In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight.
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power, Green Lantern's light!!!
That's what cheers me up lol
Blackest Night, Vol. 1, in case you're curious.
http://www.amazon.com/Blackest-Night-Geoff-Johns/dp/1401229530/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335316503&sr=8-1
Personally, I'd just stick to Blackest Night. Everything in between focuses on the event as it relates to each respective group and adds even more depth to the story, but not really necessary at all.
IMO, you want to read Blackest Night, and maybe [Green Lantern #43] (http://www.amazon.com/Green-Lantern-Blackest-Night-prologue/dp/B002G4CJLG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1449693121&sr=8-2&keywords=green+lantern+43) to understand how Black Hand came to be this way.
Blackest Night by itself is just one book. I think it's seven or eight issues long. Here's a link to it on amazon. Blackest Night https://www.amazon.com/dp/1401229530/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_HxvZub116YJH1
back again, http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Vol-Death-Family-New/dp/1401242340/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&sr=&qid= if i found something like that, it would contain a full story arc?
Woah. Did not see this. Sort of late comment.
Okay. I am a huge comic book fan. I am not sure what you would be in to, but my strong point is superheros so I will recommend you some.
Batman Vol. 1 of the New 52 series (DC's remake on 52 comic series) is a great one, mostly because the story line is pretty amazing and batman is one of the most popular series.
Another good starter is Nightwing Vol. 1. This story follows Dick Grayson, a former robin who is now a solo hero (nightwing.) Batman Vol. 1 and Nightwing Vol. 1 are sort of tied together so if you get this, although it would be optional and you would still understand the storyline, I highly recommend you also get Batman.
Other batman issues I recommend picking up are the new 52 issues 21-29 (Zero Year) and also batman #30 (Zero Year - Ravage City) I picked up #30 yesterday and it was superb. One of my favorite issues ever. I was also recently recommended Batman Death of the Family, which is inbetween the Court of Owls (1-12) and Zero Year (21-29)
Other than that, you could try starting on another New 52, such as the Flash, Aquaman, Batman & Robin, Action Comics, Detective Comics, or Green Arrow, just to name a few.
Have fun :)
Edit: Just noticed you like dark and intense storylines, which makes this even better because thats basically all batman is (lol).
Edit 2: I would also recommend looking into some comic book subreddits, such as /r/comicbooks /r/batman /r/marvel /r/DCcomics
Edit 3: Saw this below, but The Walking Dead would be great if you like zombies, although it would be quite hard to catch up to.
Edit 4 (SO MANY EDITS): If you would like to know some other NEW 52s, I have some on my wishlist here (shameless plug)
Nice! Just a head's up, DC collects things in weird ways sometimes. Death of the Family has two main volumes: The Joker one (which you got) and Batman volume 3, which is not in the picture. Batman volume 3 is the main story, while The Joker volume collects all of the tie-ins, with a few bits from the Batman title. I have only read the Batman volume, so I can't personally vouch for the Joker one, but I've heard that The Joker volume doesn't flow as a single narrative, but serves better as supplementary reading to the Batman volume. Batman can be standalone, while The Joker volume is supposedly best read alongside/after Batman.
I'm mostly a comic book buff and right at this moment I am reading Batman: Death of the family it's pretty awesome so far. Other then that, I also finished Thor God of thunder: The accursed, it's good but not better then Godbomb.
In the Batman new 52 series, vol. 1 & 2 appear to be out, but on Amazon vol. 3 isn't http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Vol-Death-Family-The/dp/1401242340/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1377179732&sr=8-2&keywords=batman+the+new+52
But I've seen people on this sub talking about it, how it should've ended, etc. Am I just missing something here?
You could start at the New 52, which is the reboot that happened in 2011. The reboot is a good starting point because there's not much necessary background information needed. Volume 1 and Volume 2 are out, and Volume 3 will be out in less than two weeks. After this, you could wait for Volume 4 to come out in May or start buying the individual issues that come out.
Yup that contains the full story arc for Batman there are tie ins for Nightwing Batgirl etc but they aren't necessary.
Death in The Family was a cross over that covered all of the Bat Family books.
Just make sure it has a volume number next to it that will contain the complete story.
Where as something like The Joker will only contain the tie in issues for the other characters.
I think he means Death of the Family? https://www.amazon.com/Joker-Death-Family-New-52/dp/1401242359/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=
Nope. Generally tie-ins don't need to be read. The golden rule for tie ins is not to read anything that isn't written by the main author. Death of the Family does have a special Joker edition that collects all the tie ins and tells the story more from Joker's perspecitive. The Catwoman tie ins were horribly unfun. Batgirl and Batman and Robin were definitely worth a read to me.
That reading order site should help out for chronological help. Also you can probably get all these books on loan from your local library without paying a dime.
Batman: Night of the Owls (The New 52)
https://www.amazon.com/Batman-Night-Owls-New-52/dp/1401242529
The Joker: Death of the Family (The New 52)
https://www.amazon.com/Joker-Death-Family-New-52/dp/1401242359
The Joker: Endgame (The New 52)
https://www.amazon.com/Joker-Endgame-Scott-Snyder/dp/1401261655/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1494954777&sr=1-2&keywords=batman+endgame
For the most part, each title is all the main characters doing they're own thing. I think Nightwing and Batman and Robin titles are the only ones that really have a big crossover storyline with Batman's Night of Owls storyline. Everybody else is just involved for like one issue and its not a big deal.
As for Death of the Family, I believe there is one large volume coming out that contains issues from all overlapping titles.
Here's the link to that one: http://www.amazon.com/The-Joker-Death-Family-New/dp/1401242359/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373690359&sr=8-1&keywords=Death+of+the+Family
There is, yeah. It's called The Joker: Death of the Family.
Also why wouldn't you recommend a death in the family? just curious!
also if this helps, this is the one i read at school (i'm also looking to buy the books of amazon but don't know which ones to get or if they come in bundles)
https://www.amazon.com/Batman-Vol-Family-Comics-Paperback/dp/1401246028/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=batman+owl+saga&qid=1573600464&sr=8-8
And this is the one at home I had a flick through

Also I wanted to get Endgame, but there's also a Joker and a Batman one, do I get both? Are they the same story but different sides?
Sorry I'm really confused about the Joker vs Batman versions
The entire Death of the Family run is amazing. I loved every single issue of it.
Going along with that,
Batman and Robin New 52 run was GLORIOUS!!
Part 2 of B&R
Part 3 of B&R. I loved this arc because of who Robin is and it just gives me all the feeeelssssss
Is it this one ? https://www.amazon.com/Joker-Death-Family-New-52/dp/140124646X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1518210185&sr=8-1&keywords=joker+death+of+the+family

I think that’s the joker mask that came with a new 52 comic
https://www.amazon.com/Batman-Death-Family-Book-Joker/dp/1401249272
http://www.amazon.com/dp/1401249272/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=59HIDPJXZZBM&coliid=I2YA9RRNMP1VGX
It was a dollar or so cheaper when I bought it last week, but way less than the $39.99 MSRP.
We you able to get your hands on jokers face comic bundle that went on sale? http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Death-Family-Book-Joker/dp/1401249272
I thought for a second that was the joker from that time he cut his own face off and then wore it as a mask. The Joker: Death of the Family
Edit: oh, the other guy in the back
They came together in a special edition of Death of the Family
https://www.amazon.ca/Batman-Death-Family-Book-Joker/dp/1401249272
That would be death of the family if i am not mistaken.
Currently available for preorder on Amazon for $26.96, I got in when it was $24 and some change. You aren't charged until it's close to being shipped and the preorder price guarantee is great.
http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Book-Bk/dp/1582406197/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1318645642&sr=8-1
Much cheaper than buying them individually. Each contains 12 issues, I believe.
Zombie related: The Zombie Combat Manual by Roger Ma. The Walking Dead By Robert Kirkman. Zombies(http://www.amazon.com/Zombies-Record-Infection-Don-Roff/dp/0811871002/ref=pd_sim_b_13) by Don roff
Survival Related: The SAS Survival Guide, The Ultimate Sniper by (Ret.) Col. J. Plaster, The Emergency-Disaster Survival Guidebook.
I know it's not a book. The Colony is an interesting watch if you ever get some time to sink in information.
Amazon Links
Issues 1-48. SUPER thick compendium that does NOT include individual comic covers. So thick, it's honestly annoying to read, although it is the most bang for your buck.
or
Issues 1-6. Softcover.
or
Issues 1-12. Hardcover.
That should get you started.
Start right here. You won't be sorry.
My preference is to buy the "Books" like this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Walking-Dead-Book-Bk/dp/1582406197/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1343944040&sr=8-1
They are released a lot more often than the big compendiums, and it lets me pace the story out a bit rather than reading issue 1 - 100 within a day or two.
Also, I think they look the best. Just my opinion.
Oh you mean the actual issues...
I thought you meant these - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Walking-Dead-Book-Bk/dp/1582406197/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1343238959&sr=1-5
The Walking Dead is based on a comic book by the write of the show Robert Kirkman. Amazon is selling the books (which contain 12 comics) of the The Walking Dead. [Book 1 is 47% right now] (http://www.amazon.com/The-Walking-Dead-Book-Bk/dp/1582406197/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1335422482&sr=8-3)
The comic book and the Tv have the same main plot but pretty different.
Edit: the comic is up to issue 96
If you are looking to go the collection route I highly suggest getting the hardcover books. The quality of book build is much better then a softcover 1000 page over sized compendium tomb and you wont tire from holding it while you read. Plus they look awesome on a bookshelf
Naturally this a much more expensive route to go but like many who testify here its an epic graphic novel worthy of the investment.
I torrented and read the entire series and and am now working on collecting them all.
You can actually get them as books.
My favorite is Marshal Law. He isn't a superhero, but he is a "cape killer" or superhero hunter. A comic I really want to read Thanks for the contest and good luck to everyone entering!
It's hard to go wrong with The Walking Dead.
From my understanding it doesn't always follow the show and in some ways is better so that would be my recommendation.
There also Ex Machina. I don't know much about it but it's I'm my list and it looked interesting.
A comic if want would be the walking dead linked above.
What about the Walking dead volume 1 graphic novel and some meth aka blue rock candy
Funny contest you sneaky bugger! I think it'd be cool to split the prize with a fellow RAoAer so I'd take this.
I PM'ed you my answers.
volume 1 for the kindle
walking dead vol 1 there you go my friend
You should start from the start. You won't regret it. It'll make the back stories more interesting too.
This is the volume I have. It's practically new. I got an extra copy as a gift so it's never been read.
I'm not really looking for a specific version. What does pocket version mean? Also, this is the first book in the series right?
For my 14th birthday my granddad gave me scales. I was a cheerleader and was always comparing my weight to other girls to begin with then I get these scales and freak out b/c I think he's telling me I'm gaining weight. It ruined my birthday. My parents took me to my favorite restaurant and I refused to eat. I wouldn't eat any cake either...chocolate my favorite. It was horrible. Luckily my mom hid the scales and I forgot about the gift within a couple of weeks. Well, not forgot, I just quit letting it bother me.
Zombies!
This might sound silly but I just bought this comic from my LCS.
http://www.amazon.com/Hellboy-Vol-1-Seed-Destruction/dp/1593070942
The paper smelled really, really bad. Like to the point where I was getting a bit nauseous. Anyone else have this problem?
Yeah, if it was free to play I'd push a lot harder for people to try it, but I can understand not wanting to plop down thirty bucks for a game you're not sure you'd want.
However, I really love modern day/supernatural settings. Some of my favorite book series are The Nightside books by Simon R. Green, The Hollows series by Kim Harrison (especially so because I actually live near Cincinnati, which is where the books take place), The Hellboy graphic novel series, and so on.
So yeah, a game with a modern day setting where I get to spend hours fighting zombies, insane cultists, bloodthirsty vampires, and elder gods? Sign me up! :D
I did some research because I changed to internationally. Shipping a basic 1kg parcel from Hungary to the UK is 8600HUF (~37 USD/24GBP) which is a bit much.
However ordering from Amazon.co.ok lets say Hellboy vol1 for a comic book lover (8,80GBP) I could get the package shipped for ~2,75 GBP plus VAT if needed. Giftwrap is also available for for 3,04 GBP. Now if want to also send a postcard from Hungary to the UK its only 260HUF(0,74 GBP) with priority shipping.
Another example would be this awesome Portal 2 shirt from the j!nx EU store for ~18 euros. Shipping to the UK is 7,78 euros. Again, postcard HUN->UK less then one Euro.
For someone like me with veeery limited student funds its waay more preferrable to use this method.
Ofc another option would be the steam or GoG gift, with no shipping.
Hellblazer - "Dangerous Habits" inspired Constantine .
It's been a long time since i've seen Hellboy, so i barely remember the plot of the movie, but the first volume of Hellboy is a good start.
I love Lovecraft! Oh and if thats your style, you should check out the comic series [Locke and Key] (http://www.amazon.com/Locke-Key-Vol-Welcome-Lovecraft/dp/1600103847) .
Amazing modern Lovecraft done with great art. Nominated for an Eisner no less.
As for my sci fi roleplay, I can sum it up pretty well with this outtake from [Serenity] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=is2aoehmUMs)
If you like reading and horror stuff, how about checking out the Locke & Key comic? I haven't read this one personally yet, but I've heard good things, and Universal is planning a movie version so you might see it on the big screen eventually.
As for something about me, I like comics (as indicated by my suggestion) and reading in general. I'm trying to do the 52 book challenge this year and my wishlist is 99% books. ;)
It also depends on what's important to you. I like heavy charaterization, surprises in plot, great art and not knowing if the end will be happy or not. Life isn't all roses, so I don't want everything I read to be all happy happy joy joy.
series:
Locke and Key - my current fav - some horror
Stangers in Paradise - fun and serious drama
Irredeemable - disturbing
One book: Daytripper thoughtful
The Pro - funny
Two-Step - funny
No Hero - a bit disturbing

Thanks for the contest, it was fun trying to find everything!
the 2 compendiums are issues 1-96 combined i believe and their only $35 each

Here is one.
Also here is another one.
Probably the best bang for your buck and what got me off the exclusive DC/Marvel wagon and into the world of creator-owned comics:
http://www.amazon.com/The-Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760d
And this is going to be my next purchase:
http://www.amazon.com/Invincible-Compendium-TP-Robert-Kirkman/dp/1607064111
They are The Walking Dead compendiums. http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760
Compendium 1 goes to issue 48, compendium 2 goes to issue 96.
You could always read this. Or if you've read that, there's this. Or if you've already made that quest, may I suggest this?
http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1318653314&sr=1-1
Contains the first 4 of the above for a total of 48 issues for even more savings!
There are elements that are the same, but there are already some major deviations from the comics in the show. Many of the characters in the group did not appear in the comics (notably Daryl). The CDC plot line and its implications are not in the comics either.
That being said there are some similarities. The ending of tonights episode did happen in the comics, so anyone who has read them has a pretty good idea what's going to happen.
Based on everything I've seen and heard from the creators/producers, I would say read the comics for sure, they are fantastic (they actually got me hooked on comics in general). There may be some things that are less shocking or suspenseful, but by and large the show is progressing differently than the comics.
Start out with this if you are interested: http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1318826494&sr=8-4

The Walking Dead
Here's a much cheaper alternative.
Here ya go: http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760
I haven't been gifted yet! lol and on that note, my word is narskit: the act of accidentally biting the inside of your mouth in the same place multiple times. "Dammit I've been narskitting all week!"
hmmm this would be cool. Or I guess if I'm really dreaming this XD. Honestly anything from my wish list would give me a rush lol
US Army Survival Guide
Small Scale Grain Raising
A Barefoot Doctor's Manual
The Home Water Supply
The Walking Dead
Mischief Managed.
Wine and this game complement each other perfectly. We need both to keep our spirits up after long school days.
We should look fabulous while flying.
It's like a hat except safer.
We need this book in case the Inferius come to get us. It's like a survival guide, except everyone dies.
A trunk for salad!
This choker would look good with any cape.
My links aren't even links, I feel like I'm doing this all wrong.
You should definitely read them. To get the most for your money, I'd suggest buying the compendium on Amazon. Boom
If you read the comics online, I also recommend you purchase at least the compendium. It's the least expensive option, and the comics are so great that (IMO) Robert Kirkman deserves to have your money. I had never read a comic book in my life until The Walking Dead came along - and I'm hooked!!
The first issues are selling for hundreds of dollars (#1 selling for over $1000). The hard cover books (combined issues) are selling for about $20-$30 per book (I think there are 7).
If your not collecting them, and you just want to read, this would probably be your best bet. It contains issues 1-48 of the comic.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332247752&sr=8-1
I didn't down vote this, but I came here to say that I don't like this person trying to read the comic for free. Order the first compendium, it has 48 comic episodes in one book. $35, but it's friggin massive, and it's a great read.
http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1330525358&sr=8-3
Of course, if you just want some reference info and don't want to buy the comic, by all means, go to this site:
http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/The_Walking_Dead_Wiki
Going to buy The Walking Dead, Compendium 1 and read it.
Yeah I saw the Compendium, amazon but when you say issue is that the same as individual comic?
So every individual comic, does it have it's on story arc or does it continue along like the TV show?
If I bought the trade paperbacks would that be the same as buying 6 comics?
Do I make sense, I don't think I do.
If it's any consolation, this is about as good as I was able to find.
there's also this which compiles the first 48 issues. It allows you the tactile experience and you can feel less guilty.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Walking-Dead-Compendium-Volume/dp/1607060760 are these the volumes that you mean, it's going for £30, how many of the comics roughly? Will buy them all if needs be, wanted to get them myself, but would prefer the comics...
First of all, welcome! In regards to your Walking Dead question, it's a self-contained, on-going series that you can start from the beginning. Your cheapest option to start reading it would be the compendiums.
if you want a simple but really good story try 'the killing joke' by alan moore. That comic is pretty much universally loved and alan moore is a complete genius. Another amazing piece by Alan Moore is watchmen. (im sure youve heard of it or seen the movie, if not, what?) but it is amazingly written and illustrated. Those are both dc. if you want something not marvel or DC i would highly recommend the walking dead. if your interested dont get the single issues are anything. get the compendium because it is more bang for your buck. compendium is 60 in stores and 35 on amazon.
another really fun and well put together series is scott pilgram. there are 6 volumes that range around 10 dollars each for the paper back. altogether a great story. the art work isnt my favorite but it is a little better in the colored version AKA the hard cover version. if you saw the movie and thought "meh it wasnt the best so i wont read the comics." 1) the movie is freaking great and 2) the movie doesnt really follow the books considering that volume 6 was written after the movie was made.
But yeah those are my thoughts. i could go into alot more but the ones i gave are quite a lot!! hope this is helpful!!

Saga - If you like stuff like Star Wars you'll love this.
Deadly Class - This is probably my favorite book being put out right now.
Daredevil by Brian Michael Bendis - I'm currently rereading this run and it is even better than I remember. One of the definitive runs for one of the best characters the big 2 have produced.
The Walking Dead - I don't know about you, but I love zombies and this probably the best zombie story I have ever read.
Batman: Black Mirror - This actually has Dick Greyson as Batman instead of Bruce Wayne, but it is a great read.
Batman Court of the Owl - This is where you want to start if you want to read New 52 Batman Snyder, who also wrote Black Mirror, has had a great run on the series.
Annihilation - Starts a truly epic run of stories on the cosmic side of the Marvel universe. Unfortunately the physical copies are stupidly expensive, but if you don't mind reading digitally you should check it out.
This is just off the top of my head and I'm sure others, with more knowledge, can help more. Are there any characters or geners you particularly enjoy?
I think the best bang per buck are the Compendia:
https://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1540922803&sr=1-3&keywords=The+Walking+Dead%3A+Compendium
3 are out there so far, each containing 48 chapters, so that's 144 chapters. Right now chapter 184 is the most recent one, so it's going to be a while until compendium 4 comes out. I guess, if you plan on buying the next compendium, it'd be "okay" to read the chapters somewhere online until you can buy them, if you can't wait. At least that's what I'd do.
I believe you can get them even cheaper online too.
Compendium 1 (Issues 1-50): http://www.amazon.com/The-Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760
Compendium 2 (Issues 51-100): http://www.amazon.com/The-Walking-Dead-Compendium-Two/dp/1607065967/ref=pd_sim_b_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=1M6EMPFX35K9Z0ZHYHKT
WD Compendium 1 is $36.50 on Amazon
Time for you to read the comics.
$29
Definitely get the compendiums. 1050+ pages of the Walking dead
There are 3 compendiums that span 148 issues, but there are 160 issues out now.
https://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760
Much better value if you are looking for deals. IRL the books are $59.99. It is $30-$35 on Amazon.
Sigh... every time I see a Transmetropolitan thread, I search Amazon for the equivalent of this, so that I don't have to buy a dozen books and keep them all on my shelf.
I'll settle for two or three volumes, but come on, this many years afterwards there has got to be a gathering of resources.
http://www.amazon.ca/Walking-Dead-Compendium-1/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1292802934&sr=1-1
yes. get trades or this.
You should check out wyches by Scott Snyder.
Edit- I got my copy for about 5 bucks in Amazon.https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1632153807?ref=olp_product_details
Hi there!
So, this series is mentioned a lot, but try The Walking Dead. If you watch Breaking Bad, you probably have seen the show as well. The comics are much better.
Typical people thrown into zombie apocalypse. Rick "Family Man" Grimes has to keep his family and the others safe from zombies and other people.
The best "bang for your buck" would be The Walking Dead Compendium on amazon. $30 for 8 volumes in one nice, easy to store book. Usually one volume is $15. You do the math.
And as stated earlier, check out Criminal by Ed Brubaker, or anything by Ed Brubaker. He is my favorite writer in comics, and he writes a lot of crime based comics
I'm sure you can buy them in comic stores, but I got them from Amazon. There are $35 books that combine 48 issues, so ~$0.73/each, but then you have to buy the individual issues for more recent stuff which is what pushes the price up.
The first 144 issues add up to $99.83 on Amazon, in three big fat 1000+ page volumes. Then there are 18 recent issues not in any collection that cost $5-6 each, so it adds up to about $200 for the full series. And if you're cool reading on a tablet, the Kindle editions are significantly cheaper.
The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks
http://www.amazon.com/The-Zombie-Survival-Guide-Protection/dp/1400049628
World War Z also by Max Brooks
http://www.amazon.com/World-War-Oral-History-Zombie/dp/0307346617/ref=pd_sim_b_2
And if you are open to graphic novels/comics
The Walking Dead series (It is significantly different from the TV series which is based on this series)
http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760/ref=sr_1_1
Kirkman is the author of the comic. He also writes Invincible, which is up there for Favorite Superhero Comic Ever in my book.
It's not a matter of explaining things better - the books are pretty wildly different. The VERY broad strokes are there (Rick wakes in a hospital, finds his family, camp outside Atlanta, farm, prison...), but characters are omitted and added, and others die way earlier or way later than they do in the source material. Characterizations and relationships change, and overall they just do some things that will never, ever be okay on any TV network short of HBO.
If you have curiosity and a little money to burn, you can't go very wrong with getting the first four years of this book, sight unseen.
Here are the first 48 issues, and the next 48 will be released in the same format on October 16th.
Oh, and Walkind Dead we cant not have zombies after all...
http://www.amazon.com/The-Walking-Dead-Compendium-One/dp/1607060760
It's legal, so don't worry about your ISP. It's a Physical copy as well.
It depends. The tv show definitely follows the overall plot of the comics like the path of the group from Atlanta to the prison, to Alexandria and so on. The tv show adds sometimes major plot points in that are not in the comics (won't say which exactly, you can ask about those).
The characters are partly the same but there are cases in which characters act completely different compared to their counterpart in the comics. And/or they die in different ways (or not at all) in the comics.
Lately, the comics have been following the comics very closely. There were moments or episodes in the TV show that resembled parts of the comic but these past 4 episodes were really close to the comics (and other stuff this season which I won't spoil for you either).
All in all I really recommend you to read the comics. I was in the same situation as you and decided to go for it.
The best way to read the comics would be to buy the compendiums; there are currently 2 of them. They are by far the cheapest way to read the comic.
Compendium 1 ends with the fall of the prison. The tv show is about halfway through compendium 2. I suggest you to buy compendium 1 (see here) and then decide whether you want to read past the current story line in the show.
... or begin reading the entire Walking Dead graphic novel.
First compendium is on sale!

Not at all!
well then in that case It seems it would be about 50 bucks cheaper to just pick up this big guy
Just did some price history searching, looks like $36 is the cheapest it's been in a year. Worth every penny though.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1607060760/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1492056568&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=walking+dead+compendium&dpPl=1&dpID=51S12ntkIbL&ref=plSrch
Marked down to $35 from $60 in the US. And it's in stock.
There's really not a lot I'd recommend not starting at the beginning for...for the Walking Dead, pick up the first compendium, as someone already stated. Lots to read! Here it is. It collects the first eight volumes. It's hard to beat the value considering the first 8 volumes, new, would be around $100.
Here is my books wishlist. any of them would be fantastic. i just recently got into reading, actually, and im having a blast reading through the mass effect books. i have the first two in the series, and id love to continue with Book 3!
then again, i have always wanted to continue reading the Walking Dead. that one is super pricey though, so lets stick with Mass Effect. :D
what am i gonna do with it? read the shit out of it, of course!! :)
great contest, by the way. reading is fantastic and im glad i have discovered the fun i can have with it.
edit forgot to include- used is fine for everything! save that money! :)
Walking Dead Compendium
The Last of Us: American Dreams https://www.amazon.com/dp/1616552123/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_hF7bAbREQWHJG
I definitely recommend chew, the last of us, fanboys vs zombies (although you may find it a little cheesy but I like it), or the walking dead.
if I win can I PM you my comic list?
I've been thinking of buying them for a while. Just one question, is this it? Like all 4 books come for that price? There's only one cover and it doesn't say anything on the description so I wanna be sure before I pull the trigger lol
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Last-Us-Faith-Erin-Hicks/dp/1616552123/ref=sr_1_1?crid=248D9XT6U43FX&keywords=the+last+of+us+american+dreams&qid=1557304417&s=gateway&sprefix=The+last+of+us+am%2Caps%2C151&sr=8-1
They were released the same year Tlou came out and so left behind was definitely written with the comics in mind.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Last-Us-American-Dreams/dp/1616552123/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481150452&sr=8-1&keywords=the+last+of+us+american+dreams Does this include all of it?
Used copies for just over $5
Here's a couple of comic books that will be up your alley:
Witches is distinctly small town. Fell is about a detective dealing with the isolated crappy side of a big city. It's a detective noire story, but it might as well be horror based on the tone and the way the city itself is treated as a character.
Hmm, I thought I read somewhere that there would be more, but I may have been mistaken. It might have been in an interview. Well this was the best evidence I could find was this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1616552123/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1376178162&sr=8-2&pi=SL75
In the description it says that it is the first chapter meaning there would be more... But that could just be referring to the story line in general not the comics.
I know it's pretty much a different medium entirely but you just described Spawn to a T.
http://www.amazon.com/Spawn-Origins-Collection/dp/160706071X/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1318636318&sr=1-6
Just sayin'.
>"A biological imperative, uncontrollable emotional impulses, impossible to rid ourselves of". I am sorry to say but is a very simplistic and rigid understanding of complex human cognitive processes.
No it isn't.
>Modern humans have existed for some 400.000 to 250.000
The debate is between 150,000 and 200,000 max.
>We might even be hardwired to cooperate
All animals cooperate.
>(with regards to altruism as a positive evolutionary and societal characteristic I suggest you read "Why We Help" by Martin A. Nowak in the latest issue of Scientific American (July 2012) throughout the ages.
You are not talking about altruism. Altruism is the idea of performing an act for someone else for no selfish reason [sic] no benefit to yourself. You're discussing cooperation, and being rather redundant.
>In regards to murder being an "necessary normality" I have not read any comics which address this
Again, I point to The Walking Dead.
>I have not heard of any real-world examples of a total collapse of human society with murder being a survival strategy.
You obviously missed this post about a survivor of the Balkans Wars.
I feel like The Joker needs to be added to this list. It better portrays The Joker as an absolute maniac.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Walking-Dead-Book-Bk/dp/1582406197/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331393993&sr=8-1
This is the book I have and the one you want correct?
The Walking Dead is a graphic novel.
21 I believe is the start of the run titled Zero Year, so they are the same thing. I'd start with 1 so you're not jumping into it in the middle. Here are some links for you.
1-6
7-12
supplemental material for the above
13-17
supplemental material for 13-17
The supplemental material isn't required to get what's going on (I'm not really worrying about it, I've only read 1-12 to this point and am waiting for 13-17 to come out in one volume), but it does help give you a greater understanding of the full story, from what I've heard.
edit: not sure why ppl are downvoting? If there's any inaccuracy in this please comment by all means.
Here you go!
It's a lead in to the game, following Ellie before she gets bit.
This sounds like what you're looking for:

Honestly im surprised WB/DC hasn't been gunning for them from the start. The mask is kind of blatant in its aesthetic.
