So this is a Smith and Wesson Model 27, made in 1960 (per the serial number), .357 Magnum (also .38 special). I received it as a gift and it is my first gun ever! Super stoked to own it now, and I'll probably join the prolonged slide of gun ownership that I see in this sub time to time. My next purchase is likely a smaller concealed carry weapon.

The giant ammo tin is vintage, I'm guessing vietnam era, but no idea, I could be full of shit. It's stacked with hundreds of .357 FMJs. 1 box of .357 hollow points, and 2 boxes of Shotshell snake charmers.

I'm pleased as punch with this gun. I've just purchased a bunch of accessories on amazon, I'll post them below, maybe you can tell me if these are good products or not for range shooting. (No referral links or any of that bs)

I just got these and they are awesome. The bluetooth works very well, I was even able to take a call while at an indoor range and the caller could understand me just fine.

u/HighSpeedChase762 · 4 pointsr/tacticalgear
u/astronaut-frodo · 4 pointsr/Machinists

I bought these and never looked back. I prefer low-profile muffs over ear plugs because they’re easier to take on/off, harder to lose, and as a bonus they keep my ears warm in the winter (i work in an unheated shop). The ones with Bluetooth speakers are about $80, but if you’re not allowed to listen to music at work you can save a lot by getting the non-Bluetooth version, I think they’re around $30.

I currently use the Peltor Sport Tactical 100 ($50) which does have a very basic compression circuit. At least from my personal experience, the noise suppression performance in that model is better and the sound more natural than the Howard Leight Impact Sports, though both pale in comparison to my employer-provided MSA Sordins.

If I was in the market for a new set, I'd probably be looking at:

  • 3M Peltor Sport Tactical 300 ($100) - These have a far more sophisticated compression circuit than the 100s;

  • 3M Peltor Sport Tactical 500 ($120) - Effectively the same thing as the 300s but adds Bluetooth capability. While Bluetooth is useless to me at the range, I also use frequently use my earpro for air travel including long international flights, so one less cable in my way would be nice for those situations.

  • MSA Sordin Supreme Pro X ($260) - Newer version of my work-provided set, these do everything quite well but don't have Bluetooth.

Of course, any set of Peltors I might buy would also get 3M camelback gel pads installed, which adds another $40. The difference in comfort with those pads is amazing; with the standard soft plastic pads the Peltors get uncomfortable for me after an hour or two, but with the gel pads I'm fine wearing them for the duration of 10+ hour international flights. The MSA Sordins come with similar gel pads installed, but overall they're $100 more than the Peltor 500 + gel pads.

So yeah, if I were buying today, I would most likely spring for the Peltor Sport Tactical 500 + camelback gel pads for a total of $160. If Bluetooth is not useful for you, you could save $20 by dropping down to the Peltor Sport Tactical 300.

Even just the $50 Peltor 100s should be a significant improvement over the Howard Leight Impact Sports or Peltor RangeGuards.

For sure - It's frustrating that a father's legitimate depression is taken less seriously because it doesn't have the same cause as motherhood depression. Fatherhood depression is very real, and very different from just being stressed. Ideally, we would define and treat mental health issues with more accuracy.

As for real support for OP - Of course, my first recommendation is to find a therapist you click with, ideally one trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). As for quick ideas that may help, I've heard many parents of loud babies swear by electronic ear protection. A baby's cry can reach 130 decibels, enough to permanently damage human hearing! Electronic ear protection works by recording the sounds around you, then playing them into your ear at a safe volume in real time. They're meant for hunters, shooters, and people who work around loud equipment who still want to be able to hear things going on around them. They come as ear muffs or the more expensive ear buds. You'll still be able to hear your wife talking or baby crying, but at a volume that doesn't tell your brain to run away from the situation and enter fight or flight.

Hm. Maybe you could buy one of the pre-made ones like:

http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-RST-63005-Earmuff-AUX-Input/dp/B001ULCHD6/ref=pd_cp_hi_3

and take the parts out of it?

I used hearing protectors, cost around $19. Once you get use to them you will get great sleep. Thinner is better. Also a pillow with lots of give and heft so the protector does not "bottom" out.

Super comfortable, two levels of protection and won't come out. I got them for tunnel use but now I take them to the sky as well. I keep the plug open so I can still hear if anyone were to yell during canopy flight. Keeping the plug open probably also helps with pressure while still providing adequate protection.

For the price, I'd recommend anyone try them and see how they feel about it.

I can't recommend noisefighers enough. My head is super sensitive to clamp force and it was a night and day difference for me.

There are no "heavy duty" earplugs. And if there were, they wouldn't be comfortable.

These are going to be some of the most noise-reducing earplugs:

Wearing inners is still possible. I put inner ear protection on, then my amplified muffs. I normally can hear the wind whistling through the trees nearby me still while on the firing line.

You're a cheapass - you only have limited eyes and ears, so you should do your best to protect them... but you can still be a cheapass and do that; I know this because I'm Mr. Safety, but my middle name is cheapass.

Buy these $9.92 Peltor Combat Arms reusable plugs with indoor/outdoor sides:

http://www.amazon.com/Peltor-97079-Combat-Arms-Earplugs/dp/B000W2CPCC/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1323708791&sr=8-15

Buy these $8.76 T-72 Remingtons (actually made by Radians), basic safety glasses:

http://www.amazon.com/Remington-Shooting-Glasses-Clear-Anti-Fog/dp/B000F7RSFI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1323708803&sr=8-3

Then keep on being a cheapass.

Alternately, you can get these Radians Adrenalines for $13.99; they have an aluminum frame and they look super bad-ass (like awesome sunglasses), the downside is that they only come with tinted lenses, so they aren't as good as clear lenses indoors (but still work). They come with an awesome hard case and a nerdy-ass neckband (which I wear because I'M COOL):

What about using a combination?

When doing extended work in my very noisy server room with a 10Ton AC Air handler, heres what i use.

I plug in my preferred in ear headphones, and over those I put on industrial noise blockers ($13)
http://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-Leightning-Muff-NRR25/dp/B001DRGL3O

The regular in ear headphones will give you a decent reduction in outside DB, and the industrial protection gives you another 25db reduction, and from what i recall, its exponential not a simple addition of the two db reductions.

Itll probably beat any all-in-one combination you can find in performance, sound quality and price.

This is a real tragedy. But man, dont blame yourself. Carry on. Tell people about hearing loss and countermeasures. There are lot's of celebs with hearing loss problems...

SO don't panic, your life is not ruined. Educate others. Tell them that they should avoid noise exposure or protect their hearing.
For example when you attend loud concerts you should use earplugs with audio filters. And you should consider Frequency reduction values table. I made a research on this theme not so long ago. Here is the table for ~$20-30 earplugs for concerts:

I have the same ones and I agree, I bought them because they were really highly rated and cheaper than a lot of muffs and plugs, I have been thinking about these because my friend swears by them but 400 dollars seems hard to justify when I still take a lot of animals each year with the Howard Leights.

u/punkrkr27 · 2 pointsr/MTB

I use these. Cheap enough to not care if they get broken or beat up while out riding. They have a good shape to keep the wind out of my eyes and the multiple different lenses are really nice for riding in different conditions. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0039BJ92W/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/Bukujutsu · 2 pointsr/aspergers

I recently bought these ear muffs and they're great, very effective, comfortable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NKSMPZW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you combine them with these, you should have as close to silence as you're going to get: https://www.amazon.com/Decibullz-Earplugs-Comfortable-Protection-Shooting/dp/B00WIXL3T4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1499800618&sr=8-2&keywords=custom+molded+ear+plugs

I really don't have a problem wearing them all the time around the house, except when I'm listening to something or going to sleep.

There are also these in development, which are going to be released around November, IIRC. I want to read enough reviews to make sure they're quality and worth it, though: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/knops-the-volume-button-for-your-ears-music-design#/
They seem perfect for people with asperger's and hypersensitivity for hearing, likely a deficit in sensory gating as well.

u/Scubber · 2 pointsr/misophonia

My fiance has Misophonia. She sits at the table with me now. Growing up, her family would eat in one room and she would eat alone. I didn't enjoy that.

Things your partner can do:

  • Wear ear plugs - this by far has worked the best for us. She can still hear me talk through them.
  • Meal plan- Have your partner put together a list of food to eat for dinner during the week. You may not know all the foods that irritate him, but he does.

If this doesn't sound realistic, you can just have him make a list of foods that especially irritate him, then avoid making them. Things like Potato Chips are banned from our meal plan.

    Things you can do:

  • Play Background noise - If you don't enjoy music, maybe get a white noise app on your phone or a machine. We have a google home that we tell to play music whenever we eat.
  • Sit next to each other, not across: This way they will not see you chewing, and will irritate them less
  • Don't get upset - Possibly the most important one. They can't control their response to the stimuli. It's a neurological disorder much like autism and the best strategy to deal with it is to remain calm and react patiently. They can't control their anger but we can control our response.

    Hope that helps!

I use earbuds (currently Jaybird X3s) with ear protection (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FPWTJBI). This way you don't have to crank up the volume and you have more options with regards to audio quality (aka - buy whatever earbuds you want because you don't have to worry about it being noise cancelling)

u/notheretomakefrainds · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

As others have mentioned, I use a Sena setup (one of the 10 series). Bit spendy, think it ran me around ~$150, but it's money well spent. Volume is pretty good w/o earplugs, but I almost always ride with these in, just with the little plug open, and it leaves me wanting just a little more volume when I'm going 70mph+ but for the most part am happy with it.

Microphone quality is outstanding. When I first got it my gf called me and I talked to her for 30m while riding and she thought I was at home just talking through the phone

Bonus of Sena too is a lot of people use it. Makes intercomming very easy

u/alekzc · 2 pointsr/musicians

You can use shooting ear protection that allow for noise, like these headphones. I personally have a pair, and love them.

You can adjust the noise level, so it chooses how much noise gets in, and you can turn it off. They don't block AS much sound as regular shooting headphones, but it will block a lot of noise.

u/captainHuman · 1 pointr/CCW

I recently got my NC CCW and a Glock 19 with a vedder light tuck. I’ve been to the range to practice a few times but the ear pro they have for rent tends to be a hit or miss. As a result i’m looking to buy my own EarPro but and caught between the decision between Pro For Sho’s passive ear protection and Howard Leight’s Impact Sports electronic ear protection. If this would be better for /r/guns let me know.

Here’s a quick of comparison of each:

Pro For Sho
Price: $18
NRR: 34dB
Weight: less than half a pound

Amazon Link: https://www.amazon.com/Pro-Sho-34dB-Shooting-Protection/dp/B01FPWTJBI

Howard Leight Impact Sport
Price: $35
NRR: 22
Weight: slightly under a pound

Amazon Link: https://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-Amplification-Electronic-R-01526/dp/B001T7QJ9O

The Pro For Sho is lighter, about half the cost, and has a way higher NRR. I usually double up with foam ear plugs which would help make up for the Howard Leight’s lower NRR. The NRR difference isn’t the biggest concern, however, my existing opinion is that more is better. Indoor gun ranges can get loud. That being said if for whatever reason I forgot or ran out of foam earplugs I’d feel comfortable with the Pro For Shos but not the Howard Leights.

The biggest differentiator then would be the price and the electronic element of the Howards. Is the benefit offered by the electronic component really worth twice as much money and significantly less NRR? At a range the only time I’d really need to hear is when taking instruction in a class or talking with friends but if I’m by myself doing my own practice which is most of the time I feel like I wouldn’t need it. Yelling also works to account for higher NRR.

Another argument I’ve thought of is situational awareness being hindered by the passives; but the ranges in my area are all indoor with one or more rangemasters.

My biggest question to the community here is how worth it is the electronic hearing aid of the Howard Leights? I know that to some of you the price difference might be negligible but for me it matters.

On an unrelated note I stumbled across these: https://www.range365.com/sightline-replacement-pads-for-howard-leight-impact-sport-earmuffs

They look like a solid upgrade to the Howard pads. If I went with Howards I might get these later down the road when I have a bit more money to spend.

Thanks for taking the time to read through my long post!

u/matthew_ditul · 1 pointr/guns

If hearing protection is your highest priority, you need to be looking at the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR). This will be listed on the packaging/informational section (if online). The higher NRR, the better.

Electronic pro, specifically the Howard Leight's, are very popular because you can adjust the noise level to block out gunshots but still hear other sounds. You'll see these recommended everywhere. I own a pair, at pistol competitions, EVERYONE uses them. The downside is that the Howard Leights don't have a super high NRR (NRR: 22)

I also use these Fnova brand earmuffs, which have a NRR of 34. Because there's no electronic amplification, they're much, much cheaper.

For earplugs, I use Decibullz custom molded plugs, which have a NRR of 31.

What I've learned from shooting pistol competitions, especially when shooting around barrels/barricades or indoors, is that the ubiquitous Howard Leights are not sufficient. I double up with the Decibulls and Fnova for maximum hearing protection.

My suggestion is that, unless you really want the electronic amplification, you can buy the Fnova and Decibulls for the same price as one pair of Howard Leights.

Sounds like an awesome plan!

Might a rifle with a stock be more suitable? It will be much more tiring having to hold up an mp5k at arms length all day imo. You could try a mask like the Valken Mi-9 (about $50) which has flexible lower portion so she would still be able to get a cheek weld to see down the sights. Alternatively, the onetigris type mask (with cloth sides) comes in a small size. Pair that with a short polymer m4 like the apex fast attack CQBR. Or maybe you could try a p90 since they are relatively lightweight, but have much less weight out in front due to the bullpup design.

You'll obviously need to think how the ear protection will work with whatever goggle/mask setup you go for. Some fields may require full face masks for under 18s. If your local field is CQB and allows grenades then you may want proper ear defenders. these are good and have a 3.5mm headphone jack input. Run a speaker mic (acts as PTT) from your baofeng, then run a 3.5mm male to 3.5mm male from the speaker mic to the ear defenders. If no ear defenders due to full face mask requirement, then run a simple earpiece to one ear from the speaker mic.

+1 for IEMs. Before I got those, though, I used to rock with ear buds and then noise earmuffs overtop, like these ones.

If you can get yourself or try a pair of ear pro/muffs similar to these you'll see that if you turn up the volume on them, the ones in game work very similar to IRL ones. I'm fairly certain that, with my pair on and the volume cranked up, I can hear a pin drop or a mouse fart across my house.

These earplugs are a hard plastic that can be custom molded to your inner ear for a more secure fit: https://www.amazon.com/Decibullz-Earplugs-Comfortable-Protection-Shooting/dp/B00WIXL46Q/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1519794980&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=decibullz&psc=1

I've used them for several months now with no issues.

A simple fix is also twisting the cheap styrofoam plugs into narrow cylinders before inserting them into your ear canals.
