So sorry guys, it looks like it’s $30 now. But well worth it! You may be able to find a similar one for cheaper.

The outcome depends on what fruit you use. I usually have bananas, with a few strawberries and blueberries, and some peanut butter 👌🏻 blackberries don’t tend to mush as well, so you’ll have those crunchy pieces. Not using bananas makes it more of a sorbet, using bananas as the majority of it makes it more like ice cream. The longer you thaw out the fruit, the easier it is for the machine to smooth it out. I usually thaw mine for 5-10 minutes. The machine INSTANTLY turns it into soft serve, so it’s not some big process.

We have this one -- it appears pretty bulletproof.

When I was a kid, we used a cranked-bucket one -- the kind with salt and ice. That lasted about 10 years before the stainless-steel ice cream tub finally corroded through and got the ice cream salty.

apparently future me.

$70, which is kind of excusable for a holiday gift for myself.

I've been looking into this puppy for a very long time now. It's super expensive as far as these things go, but I think I'll spring for it.

I wanted something with a compressor and a big capacity, so that already took me up to the $300+ range. What threw me over the top is that I've really always had an interest in potentially starting an ice cream or gelato business, and I'd have to do a lot of testing at home. Very few models seem to be able to freeze anywhere close to the time it takes this, and freeze time significantly affects the final product.

What also sold me on it is that of all the other ice cream machines on Amazon and elsewhere, this one had mostly 5 and 4 star ratings with a couple 3s thrown in there but absolutely no 2s or 1s. Even though 2s and 1s are sometimes outliers anyway, if I'm spending that much on an ice cream maker, I want it to be perfect.

A more affordable option might be the Cuisinart Ice 100, which seems to have pretty good reviews.

I bought this one on eBay for about the same price: https://www.amazon.com/Sweet-Alice-Machine-Shut-off-Soft-Serve/dp/B07CSVFYND

My base recipe is:
1 cup almond milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
3 tablespoons Swerve confectioner sweetener
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Dash of salt

Then flavors like:

Chocolate
Add 2 tablespoons cocoa powder

Mint Chocolate Chip
Add 3/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
Add 1/2 avocado (or food coloring if you prefer)

Chocolate Peanut Butter
Add 2 tablespoons cocoa power
Add 3 tablespoons PB2 peanut butter powder

Strawberry:
Add three large strawberries

Etc.

I blend everything in a Vitamix, but any blender would work. Then just pour it into the ice cream maker.

Works great. Delicious rich soft serve ice cream in about 20 minutes. You can freeze it if you prefer a more frozen consistency.

For the sundae effect, I top with about two tablespoons of sugar free whipped cream and drizzle about a tablespoon of sugar free chocolate syrup.

Yum!

Cuisanart ICE 60

this one

Actually the problem has more to do with phase. Electric motors designed for northern Japan will run faster in the US. Electric motors (and plug in alarm clocks) will run the same if they are designed for southern Japan. I've never seen a good explanation as to why the country has 2 different standards for it's electricity 110/50hz for the north and 110/60hz for the south (and I would assume 2 different grids).

But most modern electronics can handle it (for instance, our TV will go easily from Europe to the US to Japan all we need to do is change the plug).

BUT - why get a Japanese ice cream maker when you can get this one - we bought this one in the US and had it shipped to Japan and it's AWESOME - just the right amount for 5 people to have a reasonable desert portion without spending hours waiting for the bucket to freeze or having to deal with ice/salt cleanup.

EDIT - it is also large and LOUD, but it's still AWESOME.

I use this baby. It's not too expensive and it's extremely easy to clean. Makes a pint of ice cream with this recipe in less than 25 minutes.

u/adenbley · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

if you don't get a hand crank one the motors don't last. also it appears that they aren't as good anymore.

Well, plastic or not, I was turned onto this one by the researchers at my wife's workplace. It's great and makes just enough for one or two people for a week.

Doesn't get that hot and I cannot tell you how much easier a yogurt maker makes the process.

I've recently starting making my own yogurt again, and I can definitely agree about using half and half! I've even tried using heavy cream, but found it to be too rich and left an unpleasant mouth feel.

I've been using this yogurt maker which make one quart. Would there be any advantages to using my Anova instead?

u/swarm_of_badgers · 1 pointr/AskCulinary

I was working at a restaurant where we used a couple of these. They worked well, but a batch is fairly small.

Pretty sure it's this one. 🇺🇸$255 on Amazon.

> Vonchef ice cream maker

I'm looking at these now, do you know if this is any good?
Debating between the cuisinart ICE-100, breville smart scoop, or just saving up to get this guy: https://www.amazon.com/Lello-Musso-5030-Dessert-Maker/dp/B000FIWZLO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468341970&sr=8-1&keywords=lello+musso+pola+5030+dessert+maker

(for like a year.....)

u/originalbL1X · 1 pointr/CasualConversation

Ice cream is so good though. Can I make a suggestion? Purchase a good ice cream maker and make your own. That way you can replace the bad ingredients with natural good ingredients and you won't have to feel so guilty about it.

Edit: If you have no freezer space, then that ice cream maker will not be a good choice. If you have a chest freezer, OTOH, you can't go wrong with it.

u/JohnnyRockets911 · 1 pointr/ketochow

I've tried this cheap $15 one off Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0124S0HIA (It was $15 when I bought it.)

It never really froze, just stayed liquid. I didn't use rock salt though, so maybe that's the key? I wasn't willing to invest in rock salt to try it a second time so I gave it to family member who enjoys it with their kids and normal ice cream :)

u/roodogs · 1 pointr/UlcerativeColitis

Nice! Let me know if you have any questions at all. Also, if you are into it, make some treats with it like frozen yogurt and stuff.

I bought this little ice cream maker, and a .5c of yogurt, a T of honey, and 40g of berries makes an awesome, low cal dessert, or pairing with the cake thing I posted.

Here’s a long discussion about making it at home: http://www.longecity.org/forum/topic/58153-how-about-producing-c60-at-home/

Most of these people use magnetic stirrers, but I couldn’t get it to move a liter of oil.

So this is what I do:

I use an ice-cream maker like this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beach-68320-2-Quart-Capacity/dp/B001CGW338 (not that one specifically, but similar)

Because I assume the motor will overheat, I put it on a timer so it runs 15 minutes and is off 15 minutes.

I pour 1 liter of very high quality oil (or whatever amount you’re doing) into the bowl. Over the bowl, I crush 0.8 gram of fullerene powder between two stainless steel spoons. Generally the powder cakes to the spoons, so I “wash” the spoons in the oil until they are as clean as possible. By wash, I mean I rub the two spoons together in the oil and scrub off the caked on fullerene.

Into the bowl, I put the mixing paddle, and then I cover the bowl with cling wrap, making a single perforation to allow the mixing paddle to connect with the motor.

I put a black dish cloth over the top of the ice-cream maker and then let the timer stir it for 2 weeks. I keep it in a cool dark place during this time. When it’s done, there shouldn’t be any black sediment in the bottom. This is either a sign that it is not fully dissolved, or too much fullerene was added. I keep reading that not more than 0.9 grams will dissolve in a liter.

After two weeks, I filter it through a coffee filter into a dark glass bottle. I then wrap that bottle in a black dish cloth and store it in the refrigerator. Actually, first I set aside what I will use in a week so I don’t have to let the solution stand at room temperature to become liquid again. But I also keep that wrapped in a black dishcloth to avoid light.

Oh also, this Longecity forum has a ton of information. Useful also is getting the best quality oil, so maybe look to buy from a boutique producer: http://www.longecity.org/forum/forum/415-c60health/
