There used to be a child gate there. The hinge would be on the other wall across from it. The gate has a round thing that latches into that

Got a glass kettle a while ago. Perfect pour, no dodgy taste and it lights up!

Edit: Link to it - cheaper than when I bought it…

u/peacewithcylons · 6 pointsr/beyondthebump

If you like that one, this one is great for the top of stairs (where you want it secured to the wall and without a foot bar you can trip over): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L2BMPRW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_iIwCyb6EMWS6K

We have one at the top of each stairway in our house and love them.

u/aggravatingyou · 5 pointsr/Mommit

When my oldest started climbing out, I put the mattress on the floor with a baby gate around it. It was a big gate, it made a rectangle mounted to the wall in the corner of her room.

This gate

we bought these - enough to fence off the EC and the tv. only two option are out of reach entirely, or quarantine.

fwiw, you will be lucky if you make it to a 10th birthday without breaking something expensive "this is why we can't have nice things " - buy something you are happy with, but have the budget to replace when considering future purchases. my daughter is two, we have been lucky. every one of our friends with kids have some sort of electronics horror story. for us it was cell phones - we dubbed her "destroyer of phones" 3 phones in one year. never so happy I got the insurance plan before.

We use the Arm's Reach cosleeper to keep our son next to the bed and high away from the dogs. We also have one of these gates to section off the house
And got this playpen to keep the baby in and dogs out when he's old enough to play on his own.

u/PMmeyourmacncheese · 4 pointsr/beyondthebump

They have fireplace gates you can put up. Like this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00KIY1R6O/ref=mp_s_a_1_5_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1511118326&sr=8-5&keywords=fireplace+safety+gate&dpPl=1&dpID=51rPED5myoL&ref=plSrch

Although, I’m not sure if they’re more expensive cause there marketed as “fireplace gates” you could probably do the same thing with a baby gate.

u/sneaky_dragon · 4 pointsr/Rabbits

You'll need to get a metal pet gate instead.

I have this one, but you'll need to make sure your rabbit doesn't squeeze between the bars or jump over it. Mine have been too lazy to do so.

Get this playpen: North States Superyard Ultimate 6-Panel Play Yard: Safe Play Area for Indoors or Outdoors - Folds up with Carrying Strap for Easy Travel. Freestanding. 18.5 sq. ft. Enclosure (26" Tall, Ivory) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ALOT55Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_bMiEDbGJG5QBR

And then get this wall mount kit: North States Superyard Wall Mount Kit for Superyard Classic, Colorplay, or Indoor-Outdoor 6-Panel Play Yard or Superyard 2-Panel Extension: Hardware to create an extra-wide barrier. (Gray) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BBYXD15/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_4MiEDbJTTGWAT

My parents got this for their deck to function as a fence around their pool entrance. It’s hard to describe their setup, but it works great. You would probably need only two or three panels to enclose the stair entrance.

u/IDoDoodles · 3 pointsr/UKParenting

When we looked into this for our little one, we found (as Which? states) that it was recommended to use gates that had secure anchors into the wall/posts. The pressure fix ones were deemed less safe as they collapsed too easily with force, as well as a being something of a trip hazard.

Having said that, I don’t know the layout of your home, and we didn’t try the pressure fix versions so can only reiterate the safety findings elsewhere.

In the end we opted for traditional wall-fixed gates. We have a couple of wide doorways in our home and the extending gates work excellently: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008MVF5WW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_1v43Db1AXB320

Oof!

Are the glass cabinets freestanding? We have some glass doors on our built-ins and they haven't been an issue.

They do make a 6ft version of the gates we have, we considered it but ended up just deciding she could go in the dining room. I know even longer ones exist.

The woodstove is tricky. Is it freestanding with space around all sides or is it flush against a hearth? They do make fireplace gates that can go all the way around and then don't need to be anchored (like a playpen).

Just throwing out ideas, supervision and playpen may end up working for you!

u/Rua-Yuki · 2 pointsr/Parenting

We used a baby gate/fence around the bookshelves. Now that she's older she never even touches the bookshelves because it kind of trained her to not touch that kind of stuff.

As far as her books, I'd only let her have board books and put up all normal paged books until she's older and understands not to tear them.

u/warmfuzzy22 · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

Mine was like this. He now tries to jump off the furniture at 13months. We got a super yard thingie and wrapped it around our living room. Its been a godsend.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00IX69TF0/ref=mp_s_a_1_14_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1540909651&sr=8-14&keywords=baby+pen+with+gate

u/Scootchwhiskey · 2 pointsr/Buyingforbaby

We use this one at the bottom of our stairs, it was cheap. Requires a small amoutnt of drilling for screwing in the wall, but works well.

u/lzsmith · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

I would get a full x-pen and just leave a couple of the panels accordion-folded together on one side to keep the extra out of the way. They're useful tools to have around anyways. I have this one in the 48inch version with a door, and have used it in so many different ways over the years. It's a round pen, a long rectangular pen, a space buffer around a crate, two small side-by-side pens, a fence between rooms where a baby gate won't work, an air lock, a guide around weave poles, ... the list goes on.

If you're really space constrained or really don't want extra panels folded up by the door, you could unhook the extras panels with pliers or use a more furniture-like freestanding gate like this (I don't have any personal experience with that particular product, but it illustrates the option).

u/TheWildRile · 2 pointsr/daddit

This is what I have installed at the top of the steps.

We have it raised up a bit so the cats can slip under. Our toddler is in the 80th-90th percentile for everything and he doesn't make it budge, nor do I when I crash into it. Make sure you put the hinges on the side with the wall and not a banister so that you have some solid studs for it to mount on.

u/andrew_the_geek · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

I've got these at the top and bottom of my stairs:

http://www.amazon.com/Cardinal-Gates-Auto-Lock-Gate-White/dp/B002CGRSXC/

Super sturdy and easy to open and close. Can buy or build clamps to go around the banister posts for mounting the latch if you don't have wall on both sides.

What I would do to defend my home from invisible monsters with two kids after the death of a loved one:

  1. Long range scouting- 3000usd

You can build a good shit drone with a shit airsoft electric pistolx3 and load that with 6mm paintballs including the glowing kind, and a long range good quality controller for around 450-550 usd. Both your kids can have one so that's a 1,000 usd cost.

Getting connected with the neighborhood is a good idea. For a 500 usd you can get about 40 good walkie talkies for the local area. But you'll need to coordinate a way to have seperate sectors and channels so everyone isn't talking over one another. The kids can help monitor radios as well.

There are plenty of cheap paintball kits out to pass around the neighborhood as well. For 500 you can get 16 paintball pistol kits spread around. Including two for your own kids.

You can set up some basic signaling traps such as these .22 blank cartridge systems:

    https://www.amazon.com/PREPPER-Property-Security-Poachers-Paintball/dp/B00VXOR7K8/

You can get about 24 of these around you neighborhood. For 500 usd.

You can get some uv lights for your neighborhood. About 10-30 for about 500 usd seems to be accurate that way your neighbors all around have a way of spotting the creatures before they have to shoot paint and then shoot bullets.

  2. Don't let them be your neighbor-2000

You can pretty easily get about 200 meters of barbbed wire for about 500 USD. Which should be enough to close up the street in front and behind the house.

The permits nesscary to close your street might be roughly 25-1000 usd or free for a few days. Depending on how they feel.

You can get reflective tape and engineering tape with cones and poles to make a second wall outside your house that is shiny and scary for most animals. Having a hunch of shiny pole surrounding you house is bound to scare off a few. 500 usd

  3. Out of the house- 1500 usd

You can probably have a uv and thermal camera outside tour house to find and identify potential creatures. That will run about 500 usd.

You can also have a few rc cars and helicopters with a small derringer so they can fire and shoot a pistol cartridge in .22 lr you can get two for less than 500usd.

    https://fithops.com/collections/perimeter-trip-alarms/products/12-gauge-perimeter-alarm

Perimeter alarms are supposed to use low pressure 12 gauge shells without the projectiles. But you can load them up with shot as a one use item but it's dangerous. So for a 1000 bucks you can get about 20-30 of these little guys along with wire to set the stuff up.

Dual dead bolt and door knob lock:

    [Deadbolt]

    Hard mesh screen

    Quick release window security bars:

Storm and break in resistant clear window protector

What you need to make your house storm resistant for cheap.

  4. In the house defense- 1000 usd

Three ar-15s with ear and eye protection and a few magazines. Just blast and blast till it's dead. In my basic we had a 70 pound 4 foot tall Indonesian and a 4.6 foot tall Mexican can shoot a 20 inch m16, then the kids can shoot a short barrel at 15 well enough to defend themselves.

That's about 1000 usd for all you need for the day.

Grand total 7500. Multiple everything times 6 and include the next door neighbors so they now also have guns, remote control guns and now all the streets and yards are surrounded with piles of barbbed wire that should be able to stop a tank.

You could potentially save the money spent on your neighbors and used it to reingold you home and make it essentially a concrete bunker or build a kill dozer with your kids operating some guns but you specifically asked for home stuff so that's what I did.
u/abfarrer · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

We used these when our smallest was a kid with second floor windows. There's a part you have to yank out to swing the bars open to exit.

I had a dog that learned this, it’s annoying.

Door Knob Safety Cover

You may need something like this, they can push the bolt in a way that it can open, so if you get something like this be sure it has a padlock hole or similar extra security mechanism.

Drawers

Yes, the more we look online, the more I think we need hardware mount where the door is the part that extends. (They have the one you linked at daycare, actually! just the wood style instead.)

I think we're between that one, and this one: https://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Deluxe-Stairway-Simple/dp/B00L2BMPRW/

u/Jorose85 · 1 pointr/toddlers

We use an adapter like this for the side of our staircase with wooden rails. I’m not sure if it would help in your situation though.

Dreambaby Banister Gate Adaptors, Silver https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002IAR954/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_rsCJBbH8DFZT4

Another option is a gate to enclose the top of the staircase instead.

Yeah. I can't seem to get the share link for the whole thing, but if you scroll a little, you'll see the 8 panel option for $89

We used another brand and basically attached two gates together along with the extension to fit ours. I thiiiiiink they're this one: https://www.amazon.com/Easy-Close-White-Spaces-between/dp/B000PRUAFI/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1497281752&sr=8-2&keywords=north+child+gate

They're not great, but it's WAY sturdier than the regalo ones.

Here are pics of my wall. I want to attach just around the corner from the light switch on the bottom pic and the same wall as the light switch on the top pic.

Here is a link to the gate I want to use.

I use this gate: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0043XCX0U/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And because it's wood, I just knocked one of the rails out to make a space for the cat to go through. It's not a good gate for putting across a wide doorway, but it's perfect for putting around things. When it's folded into a square or u-shape it's hard to knock over.

u/no_pizza_4_u · 1 pointr/Parenting

Either block it off as Herdnerfer suggested or something like this that can be attached to the bars.

u/gppink · 1 pointr/dogs

If you are having a lot of stress about watching the dogs, you should set up some physical barriers in the house so you can leave one dog on each side and be completely relaxed that nothing will happen. I think decreasing your anxiety will really help you come to terms about the next steps. I suggest purchasing some baby gates and creating a couple spaces where each dog can relax, so then YOU can relax. The dogs probably sleep most of the time anyway - they don't need to be together all the time. It's okay if your husband doesn't understand your level of anxiety, but if you specifically tell him "I need these to be set up so I don't feel like I have to watch them," he will probably be very supportive!

This one doesn't spring closed but it does auto lock when you swing it so presumably you could add a spring (think something you'd put on a screen door)

u/Feminist_Cat · 1 pointr/dogs

Hey, there! It's going alright. We have had them basically face-to-face in the kitchen while feeding the doggo chicken. She is way more focused on the treat than the cat, which is awesome. But upstairs is kind of "going back to kindergarten" as our trainer says because dogs need to learn everything in new contexts, i.e. the same cat she met downstairs is a stranger upstairs. We're making more and more progress everyday, but it's still going to be a while before they're bosom buddies. Our plan is to get them to the level where the dog isn't freaking out about being in the same room (cat DGAF) then we're going to get the cat a tree to climb. Right now, they spend most of their time separated.

As far as gates go, we bought this one. It's so tall that my cat doesn't even wanna cross it and the dog can't jump it. With enough motivation, she could probably knock it over, but hasn't tried to...yet.
