I prefer heating the milk on a stovetop, medium low with a cheap milk thermometer off Amazon. Steamed or frothed milk is best between 65-70°c, or as hot as possible without accidentally boiling the milk. You don't have that kind of temperature control with a microwave.

I have this thermometer, it's cheap and it works well enough. I'm very happy with the milk in my cappuccinos. I also use 3% milk or oat milk, and froth using a French press.

Definitely need one of those. I was regretting not having one whilst cooking last night. My father in law gave me one of these when we got married but I've yet to invest in a remote gauge.

Edit: also thank you for your advice and comment on the duxelle. This is clearly one of those dishes that everyone (including myself) thinks they can pull off given its renewed popularity but in reality, it requires making it hundreds of times before perfecting the execution.

Hi, meet the Clever Dripper!

http://www.amazon.com/Clever-Coffee-Dripper-Plastic-Filters/dp/B01LXFR7T3

It's bulletproof, dead easy, and just brews a stellar cup. Add a thermometer, so you an accurately gauge brew temp (it should be 200-208):

And you're good to go! If you can spend more, buy a Baratza Encore grinder, to really ensure you'e getting the best flavor, and keeping coffee fresher, longer. Ground coffee goes stale in a day or two. If you want to drink your coffee together, just buy 2 clevers, they're cheap enough....

I'm just going to throw out a list or two here and you can skim it:

  • Full socket wrench set
  • PC tools (whether you're into pc repairs or not, they offer many nifty little tools you often use elsewhere)
  • Drill'n'bits
  • Long screwdriver (flat head/Phillips)
  • A fucking magnitizer/demagnitizer (you'll wonder how you lived without one)
  • Hammer / nails

Not needed, but fun as hell:

  • Wattage meter for outlets (only need one) "What the hell is causing this high electric bill?"
  • Infrared thermometer "I bet that frying pan is cool by now..."

Oh edit - not tools, but useful in said tool kit:

  • Many types of tape electrical, two sided, painters, etc
  • Super glue
  • Batteries (at least AA, AAA - you'll thank me when the power is out next)
  • A good flashlight (or 3)
  • An LED work light bar thing
  • A head lamp

My recommendation is don't even bother. You can deep-fry in a wok or small saucepan just fine, and neither is that expensive (a good 14" carbon-steel wok shouldn't run you more than about $20, a steel saucepan should be even cheaper). You should also already have a thermometer to gauge the temperature, but if not we've been using this one for years.

If you just want to cook dried noodles, you don't need a hot plate. Pour boiling water into a bowl/cup with the noodles and wait a few minutes. If you need more precise temperature control, just drop one of these in it and turn it off just before it hits the right temp. I used this exact setup to heat water for French press coffee and noodle cups for a few years years. It works fine.

If you want even cheaper, go to Goodwill and buy a small $5 drip coffee maker, hopefully Mr. Coffee or Black and Decker and not some random brand you've never heard of. Just put everything in the pot, fill the reservoir with water and turn it on. The water doesn't come out boiling hot, but it's hot enough. You don't even need a bowl, just eat out of the pot. Plus you can also make coffee in it, just wash it out really well right away after each use.

Okay so I know you said under $5 but this is just a few cents over. I hope this can count. It's a garlic masher. Who DOESN'T want one of those?! Keep all the stinky off your hands and get a perfect mince for cooking?! It's like, heaven. I hate chopping garlic.

Also, my father is a huge griller and he swears by perfection with a meat thermometer. Getting the perfect cook every time, keep your family and friends happy :) and only $3.60.

I have a silicone basting brush at home and I LOVE IT. And it's only $2.00.

Some people don't have one of these but I love having it in my sink because it keeps all the nasty food from clogging up my drains. Into the garbage where you belong!

I noticed you had a cocktail shaker on there. Great for people who want shaken, but how about stirred drinks? Do it with something fun!

Also, make the perfect drinks with perfect pours. Jiggers make it easy if you're not an experienced bartender.

I've found some cool things for myself as well! Everyone benefits :)

Looks like it, I found this on amazon

Smart Lock gives you a few ways to bypass your lock screen. All of them compromise your security in some way, but it doesn't seem like that's your highest priority (which is totally okay, I'm the same way lol). Other than Trusted Face and Trusted Voice, there are three options:

-On-body detection: Keep your phone unlocked until you set it on a flat surface. Basically, if you're holding it or you have it in your pocket.

-Trusted Places: Keep your phone unlocked at particular locations.

-Trusted Devices: Keep your phone unlocked while it's connected to a Bluetooth or NFC device. If you use a bluetooth headset/helmet on your motorcycle, this is probably what you want. If you don't already have some bluetooth device or don't want to use a headset, you can pick up a BT button just for the sake of having a connection. Here's one and here's another

u/auryncharm · 2 pointsr/BeardedDragons

The thermometer can be part of the issue. The stick ons can be highly inaccurate at times. The have been known to be of by as much as 20 degrees. You will want to look into something like this- http://www.beardeddragon.co/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=66&search=thermometer or this - http://www.beardeddragon.co/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=65&search=thermometer. These ate far more accurate. The problems with the stick ons are that they measure more of the glass temps which are affected by the outside air around it than the temps inside the tank. Here's another temp gun from Amazon for pretty cheap - http://www.amazon.com/Handheld-Temperature-Non-Contact-Thermometer-RAG8380/dp/B00MJA21Q0/ref=sr_1_47?ie=UTF8&qid=1410483188&sr=8-47&keywords=infrared+temperature+gun

I actually have 2, one is pen thermometer (stick in a read), the other has an alarm and a timer on it and you can set it in C or F. I really liked it.

  • Pen
  • Remote

Sorry they're both UK Amazon links, but I'm sure you can find similar close to you.
u/OkraWimprey · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I guess I'd have to say that this meat thermometer is pretty dang boring, but also pretty darn useful.

u/NoraTC · 2 pointsr/AskCulinary

I second this answer, especially since that dutch oven multitasks as a bread oven. My math on the savings would be a bit different, because I would go on and get a Thermopen as an other invaluable multitasker, so I would pocket $70.

I had some years ago a great home deep fryer - for feeding 2 people. It was just a deep fryer, not a Fry Daddy, but the best reviewed for whatever year I bought it. I loved it, but when I want to feed the 6 to 8 at my table now, CI is the way to go if you have an electric stove.

u/Pixielo · 2 pointsr/CandyMakers

I stopped using a thermometer ages ago, and use the incredibly old school method of testing sugar by hand, after it's been in some ice water. But for those who aren't familiar with soft ball & hard crack by touch alone, Amazon has a lovely digital candy thermometer for $22.07.

u/ChefTimmy · 2 pointsr/CandyMakers

IR (laser) thermometers are fantastic, but not for candy cooking, as the steam throws off the reading. Digital is the way to go; I recommend one of these three: CDN, Maverick, Polder. I use the Polder and a refractometer.

Pretty sure those probes are not immersible. This is their only one that is immersible

u/oxiclean666 · 1 pointr/techsupport

My bad, I thought that you had already determined that those sensors were related to the CPU.

Since you aren't experiencing any problems other than speed fan showing those adverse temps it is possible that there is no sensor hooked up to what the software is monitoring. This seems to be a common problem with speed fan and some motherboards.

If I were you I would run a benchmark and then go through and touch each of the heat syncs with your finger to see if they are actually that hot. (you might get burned if one is actually 70*C so be careful). Check out the PSU exhaust and CPU exhaust while your at it. If nothing feels out of the ordinary and your system remains stable then I wouldn't worry about it.

If you are really paranoid about it you could go get an infrared thermometer and measure the temps at each heat sync. I think you have nothing to worry about.

  • Screwdriver. Bonus points if you have maraschino cherries around to nibble on.

  • Even though you left your friends 2 months ago, you'll be able to make new friends. Your family and friends love you and I'm sure they wish they could be there to celebrate with you!

  • Bottoms up!

I'm in Ireland, got this on Amazon UK, not sure how they can use the same name but they're a very reputable company. Much cheaper than the US alternative, https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B005YZUWLS/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485550486&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=ETI&dpPl=1&dpID=31I-jDAVzlL&ref=plSrch

Thermapen is pretty much the best you can get and luckily for you its relatively cheap in the UK compared to the rest of the world.
