Total cost was almost exactly 100 dollars, so 25 per person - that includes the lunches here as well as enough leftovers for everyone's dinners and snacks - this week we filled half cup containers with grapes, chopped carrots, chopped celery, and also got some pita for extra hummus from the wraps, chips and salsa, and like 20 cups of yogurt!! We also got a few apples and bananas to eat for breakfast.

From left to right:

  • Paninis with teriyaki sweet potatoes

  • Pasta w/ lemon, herbs, and shaved Parmesan and green beans

  • Wrap bowls (these can be constructed into wrap form in advance but we always make them the morning of w/ some red pepper hummus, it's super good) with strawberries

  • Taco bowls (same idea as the wraps but with salsa instead of hummus) with roasted corn

  • "Take-out" style noodles w/ chicken with cucumber salad with ginger/garlic/soy sauce

A quick note that applies to both pasta recipes is double the sauce! For the take-out noodles we took only four servings (like half) of the cooked pasta and mixed it with the doubled sauce and it was still only just enough.

One of our roommates is a vegetarian, so we try to make meat and vegetarian protein options for all the dishes - this made great vegetarian meatballs but you can also just cook the mix and throw it into wraps/onto sandwiches or salads. We also have tofu "chorizo" as the alternative for the taco bowls.

    Edit:
These are our containers! They're microwave and dishwasher safe, but not totally leakproof (they're fine for brothy/saucey stuff but I wouldn't put soup in them).

We use a mix of these and a cheap bulk pack we got at Fiesta for leftovers. The rubbermaids are expensive but they don't stain and are actually leakproof which is nice!! We also have three of those lunchblox sandwich kits and we use the half cup containers that come with those to portion out snacks in advance (fruits and cut veggies mostly).

I know you didn't ask me, but I literally typed "Skater bento" into Amazon's search and it was the first one on there. I know we're running on low calories but c'mon.

Keeping wet things separate from dry things helps. I have a variety of small Sistema containers; I would probably simply put each item into a different container. They also make a nice container with a compartment at one end for, say, hummus, and a long section for, say, carrots or sliced peppers to dip into the hummus.

This one, the Snack Attack Duo, is nice - there's space for a couple of different kinds of things.

I have this one ("Salad To Go") for salads - I am amazed at how long the salads remain fresh in it.

This is a smaller one, with two sections.

I use the Dressing Containers for salad dressing; they also make several larger sizes that would work for small amounts of fruit or nuts.

The Triple Split has more room for larger amounts, and comes with a container which can be used for yogurt, hummus, cottage cheese, or fruit like watermelon.

The Sistema stuff is well-made. I put mine in the dishwasher with care, and it has held up very well. I've had no problem with leakage, and food seems to last longer in the Sistema than in other containers. (I have no stake in the company; I just love the products!)

u/NineteenthJester · 41 pointsr/1200isplenty

Sistema also sells those tiny containers separately! I saw them at World Market before, but I don't think they have them anymore.

u/chipbloch · 36 pointsr/MealPrepSunday

Not OP, but I believe those are the same containers I use. You can get them here, they're fantastic.

OP confirmed!

u/_triangle_ · 32 pointsr/meirl

My mother made mine. I can't stand the plasticy fabric so mine are made from thin linen and grocery bags from thick linen.

But you can get them from supermarkets usually and online

If I may make a suggestion as someone who's bought a similar unit, buy this and line your bottoms with them: https://www.amazon.com/Tact-Premium-Non-Adhesive-Non-Slip-12-Inches/dp/B001AH8PLI

It will help prevent things from sliding off and also help keep your white shelves clean for a longer period of time.

Amazon has those.

I do this to a degree. I love the bento boxes because of all the little containers. I don't go to the extreme of faces/characters, but I think they're usually quite pretty.

I bought a lot of bento boxes off Amazon, these four have held up the best over 2 years of daily use (I have three of each, so that may help too):

We bought a few packs of these for lunches and storage we've since converted to the glass ones bc the plastic etches, however the small ones are PERFECT for the type of storage you are looking at, but they're reusable and washable. With the amount we toss into landfills, I'm pretty unwavering in how important it is to reuse things like this.

u/fifey157 · 16 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

I started freezing my leftovers a few months ago in these two compartment containers from Amazon. These containers stack and are dishwasher safe. I have broken a few lids from trying to open them while frozen and found some cracks in the bottom of the containers; just try to be gentle with them, but they are cheap and easy to replace. I like to use these 16 or 32 oz containers to freeze soup and stock.

Here are some of our favorite recipes now. I reheat most everything by doing 50% power in the microwave for 5 minutes and then nuking and stirring 1 minute at a time until the temperature I like. I usually cook an additional 3 minutes.

Black Bean Chili with a side of cornbread – this is my favorite one. It’s around 500 calories for the chili and cornbread. Very filling and warm.

African Peanut Stew with a side of white rice – if you love peanut butter, you’ll love this stew. It’s very filling and less than 400 calories for the stew and rice. Bonus, it’s vegan, but I never feel like I’m missing meat when I eat this. If you like a thick stew, make sure that you smash enough of the sweet potatoes before adding the collard greens to get a good consistency.

Chicken Taco bowl with a side of white rice – my husband like this one a lot. The flavor is really dependent on your salsa, so make sure you pick your favorite. I’ve been using my Instant Pot instead of slow cooker for this one; 15 minutes on high pressure works great. This one is around 500 calories.

Lentil and Vegetable Soup – another vegan recipe that very low calorie, around 200. I usually freeze this one in a soup container and serve with a side of fresh bread.

Freezer (not) refried bean and cheese burritos – another great one for the husband. I make Budget Bytes (not) refried beans (which I haven’t tried in the Instant Pot yet, but I’m sure would work great). For one flour tortilla (100 cal), I do ¼ cup beans (~75 cal) and 1/8 cup shredded cheese (~30 cal), roll them up and wrap them in plastic wrap, and freeze in a large freeze Ziploc bag. I eat them with hot sauce and it’s around 200 calories per burrito; they are pretty filling, but not the healthiest.

Penne pasta with ground turkey and marinara – pasta freezes better than I expected. I love Serious Eats slow cooked tomato sauce. I like to make a batch and freeze the sauce in 4 containers to use for later marinara recipes. For this freezer meal, I’ll use one portion of the sauce with ½ lb of ground turkey that I cooked and crumbled on the stove. I will portion it out over the pasta and freeze; it’s less than 500 calories per serving.

Shredded chicken – portioned into Ziploc bags for an easy way to add meat to a recipe. I recently started cooking a large (~5 lb) package of chicken breasts in my Instant Pot for 15 minutes on manual high with 1 cup of chicken stock. I shred the chicken and let it cool overnight in the fridge. After it’s completely cool, I will portion the chicken into about 2 cups per ziplock bag and place those bags into another larger freezer Ziploc bag. I have used this shredded chicken to add to soups or pot pie.

I've been using GlassLock for years now. Reheating in a glass dish is healthier for you than plastic, and does not stain, etc.

Glass snapware can be a little more expensive but it's definitely worth it. I like the brand Luminarc. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00LN810PM/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1426443844&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SY200_QL40&keywords=luminarc

u/RosesSpins · 10 pointsr/MealPrepSunday

Is that salad pre-dressed? Might want to invest in some small containers like this for dressing and sauces otherwise your salads are going to be inedible.
These are reusable and these are disposable.

u/youshutyomouf · 9 pointsr/Multicopter

Get a roll of drawer liner. Works wonders.

I cut a square and fold it twice so it's 4 layers thick. Just put that between the battery and the frame. It squishes down and grips really well. On some of my quads I also wrap a thin strip around the battery to provide more friction between the battery and the strap.

u/ShootTheHostage · 9 pointsr/Seattle

I use these too. Amazon link for those interested. They're washable and don't add much weight to your produce at checkout. I'm not really concerned about the weight, but a cashier at my local grocery store wanted to make sure I wasn't getting over charged, so she weighed each of my bags and wrote the weight on each of the tags so it can be subtracted at checkout. Pretty cool of her.

u/notthekyrieirving · 9 pointsr/MealPrepSunday

The pyrex snapware are nice, they are something like this I believe.

I have the Pyrex no leak, the lids take some getting used to. However the nice thing is you can buy the lids separate, since they are far more likely to break before the glass does. I am not sure if you can buy just the lids for other brands.

Ikea has some pretty good glass Tupperware as well, a lot like what I linked earlier. They're sold individually, so you can get just as many as you need. I have a couple of these. I have also seen pretty good deals on glass tupperware at Marshall's.

May I make a suggestion? I'm going to guess that those have a tendency to slip and slide on your table. Get a roll of drawer grip liner and place your tiles on that. During gameplay as you move minis around the tiles should stay put. I hope that helps!

You can make a ton of freezer and crock pot meals, so your wife only has to pop something in the oven, microwave, or crock pot.

I got a set of bento boxes and make a week's worth of meals at a time. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01D0JDZFO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I buy a 60 pack of eggs, hard boil 30 at a time and peel them, and pop two eggs in each bento box, and the rest go in a container in the fridge for noshing. The rest go into a casserole or two that I whip up (this one sound weird but is AMAZING) and then it's just what goes into the last little hole- a treat, or some fruit or veggies.

Whole thing including cleaning the kitchen after? 5 hours, for a weeks worth of breakfasts and dinners.

So then your nursing wife will have easy to grab and go food, and you can tweak it to add things that are good for nursing Moms, like oatmeal cookies and stuff that supports lactation.

Then there is ZERO reason to have your inlaws around.

u/bansheeofbedlam · 7 pointsr/MealPrepSunday

Those baggies will get expensive! If you want to do this for the long run, invest in some glass tupperware from Amazon. I've been really happy with these, but they also make one with more compartments. Mine don't collect smells and they've carried some pretty stinky stuff.

Also might want to pack the tzatziki separately. Not sure if it will make your salad soggy. Great start though! Hope it works out for you.

u/lo_pope · 7 pointsr/MealPrepSunday

Agreed! I ordered these in the photo (10-pack) and a few even got holes from hot food. They definitely leak so keep flat when transporting.

I just donated my remaining plastic ones locally and purchased these as replacements. I prefer the glass for a number of reasons and I prefer the smaller size/2-compartment better than the larger ones. Makes the meal feel bigger :)

u/magic_is_might · 6 pointsr/loseit

I started on Monday, so I'm a bit late to this. I'm female, ~5'1", 25 and have been overweight since my early teens. I decided enough was enough and have buckled down and started doing this seriously. No more "maybe tomorrow".

On Monday, I was 213, which I've been hovering at for months. This is my peak weight.

Today, I weigh 202. Yes, almost certainly loss of water weight and all that, but it's really encouraging.

Given my height, I decided /r/1200isplenty is the diet style I wanted to try and I love it so far. I basically just eat only 1200 cal a day. I thought it was going to suck but I've found that I'm having trouble meeting that goal since I feel full on less than 1200 cal.

My 3 biggest helpful things so far is MyFitness Pal, a food scale, and a bento box.

I love it so far because I can eat what I want, just have to watch portions and plan out ahead if I want to "cheat" on a nice burger. (By cheat, I mean allocate ~100cal less a day for the previous few days to make up for the excess I'd go over on that one day). Luckily I've never had a sweet tooth so cutting out sweets is not loss to me. I've been mainly eating meats and veggies. Luckily I LOVE veggies, so that's easy.

I even went out to eat yesterday and opted for the lowest calories items on the menu (steak!) and didn't feel at all like I was missing out and couldn't even finish my sides by the end. And I came out a few hundred cals less than 1200 for the day and had to eat some healthy snacks later to reach it. And it's only a week in. So I feel like I can really be successful with this.

My biggest challenge was ignoring the desire to eat out of habit and boredom. But I've been good at ignoring that so far. When I do give in, I eat carrots or some light yogurt :)

A lot of annoying micromanaging which I hate and made me want to not bother all together.. But I decided last week that there's no secret to weight loss. No easy way to do it. Spending 10 mins each day "micromanaging" and entering my stuff into the app and planning out lunch is well worth it.

My ultimate goal weight is 110lb and this is the first time I've ever felt like I can reach it. It will take awhile, but I've been finding this diet easy to stick to. Hoping to add exercise in eventually.

u/hello-mynameis · 6 pointsr/ZeroWaste

You could also buy or make produce bags - which are just thin reusable bags that you can fill up with your fruits and veggies if you don't want others touching them. You could sew something like this out of old fabric.

With the deli - you can try to ask them if they will put it in your tupperware but be aware they may say no due to health restrictions.

And it definitely is a lot!! Just try to remember that every small step you take to reduce waste is an improvement :)

For sure! And I would have loved to be more specific in my answer and have a whole new discussion - but just can’t right now. I’m also interested to see if anyone has been using anything new to display.

One other thing I’ve been meaning to pull the trigger on is this pantry shelving thing. It’s three tiers and clear plastic and is great for letting characters in the back of a shelf more visible. I decided to use the mobile Amazon app to look it up - here’s a link:

A summary for those who don't want to watch

  • key: be prepared for temptation
  • keep your water bottle with you all the time
  • drink water before eating (to quell hunger, your body may be interpreting thirst as hunger and it helps keep you full anyway)
  • crystal lite/mio + lite salt added to water really help with electrolytes - you need 2-3g sodium and 2-3g potassium daily
  • babybels are great for keto-snacks which are low calorie (I personally love these!)
  • salty snacks (eg nuts) are really helpful - beware of portions! Portion in ziplock bags before hand. (I personally use these)
  • roasted seaweed snacks (trader joes/costco/amazon) help to replace the crunch you may be missing from crisps. Need to like seaweed though! Good for potassium and vitamins too :)
  • beef jerky sticks help for snacking, as do atkins bars (and other low-sugar snack bars) but beware of sugar alcohols
  • plan ahead! but don't worry if you eat something that's not keto once and a while, it's not the end of the world!
u/squeezylemon · 5 pointsr/MealPrepSunday

I frankly don't understand the popularity of the divided containers, but %90 of my prepped meals are all in one bowl.

I'm pretty cheap, so I just have several of these bowls. They aren't amazing quality, but I've had one set for over a year and use them pretty much weekly, and they're still holding up fine. I don't believe they're dishwasher safe, but I don't put them in the dishwasher anyway.

I also have this set, which is also over a year old and is also in pretty good shape. My mother bought that set about five years ago for typical leftover usage and hers is still going strong as well. The variety of sizes gives me more options for when I don't want to just have "a bowl of stuff" for lunch. I do like that a number of the lids are interchangeable, so you get the flexibility of differing volumes while only having to keep track of three different lid types.

People seem pretty happy with pyrex, so maybe I'll upgrade to that eventually, but what I have works fine for me right now.

u/ms_slyx · 5 pointsr/boardgames

Baggies from the bead department in any craft store for storage since I store all my games on their sides.

Silicone cupcake liners like these to hold pieces instead of using baggies during the game. Helps a lot with money/cubes.

I keep a set of poker chips with my games as well, to replace paper money like in Power Grid.

My favorite storage accessory: Really Useful Boxes. Two of the 8.1L boxes stack perfectly onto each other and slide into one of the Kallax shelves from IKEA that everyone here loves so much. I use one for small games like Love Letter, Sushi Go, etc. and the other for supplies like sleeves and extra dice.

Not really necessary, but my friends and I have all gotten a set of 8 meeples from Meeplesource in our preferred design to use for Carcassonne obviously, but also for score tracking in other games instead of using a color piece. I have Storm Troopers, bf has Leprechauns, and our other friend who regularly games with us has Sherlock Holmes. Just makes it easier for us to see at a glance who is winning on the score track.

I also second the Plano box recommendation. Life saver for all my euros.

u/VogonPoetryLover · 5 pointsr/boardgames

I saw a suggestion on here in another thread a little while ago about a 'Gamer's Kit' or something like that. It was like a tacklebox filled with miscellaneous items that'd be useful for someone who plays a lot of games.

Extra dice of various types, extra meeples, cubes and counters in common colors, some of these silicone muffin cups for holding tokens and whatnot during games, little resealable bags. That sort of thing. I thought it was a pretty cool idea.

Would paper containers work? Like these or these(note: UK), or even these. If you are going to go disposable, then you might as well go recyclable/biodegradable.

I am personally a fan of glass containers, like GlassLock: I can hold my nose as I empty it down the drain/into the trashbag, and my dishwasher will wash it with scalding water. I prefer them over plastic ones.

u/darksier · 5 pointsr/MealPrepSunday

Yup I'll usually cook several pounds of food then pack it up in microwavable containers for lunches. I usually use the 2 compartment containers, so I'll have the meat on one side maybe on some rice. And on the other I'll put my frozen vegetables (generally broccoli or spinach). These are similar to the containers I use. Pack em up and fridge/freeze them.

I loathe the plastic ones because they leak. Got these off amazon, 5 for $30. Much prefer glass

u/xoPurple · 4 pointsr/MealPrepSunday

I live in Canada, and personally found it difficult to find decent containers (still on the hunt) that are not overly expensive since I need to buy at least 10.

I currently use a mix of these plastic containers which probably wont last as long as the glass containers from ikea. They seem like they are good enough thus far lasting through microwaves and dishwashers. IMO, they are a pretty decent size - at least for my needs... for my basic meal prep it fit 1 cup cooked rice, 112g of chicken breast and a bunch of broccoli.

If I was American I'd probably go for these containers

I'm not a pro at this as I just started MPS recently, but I've learned it's best to get containers that are freezer/microwave/dishwasher safe, BPA free. Hopefully others can chime in with their experience!

Finally, I get my inspo from:

If you have problems with the board sliding around, or just want to protect the table, you can get some shelf liner from a hardware store (or Amazon) to lay under the plywood.

u/lovetoloveyababy · 4 pointsr/Bento

Search "bento accessories" on amazon.
Even if not purchasing there you'll find so many ideas.
They have sets of various sizes and shapes of silicone muffin-type cups. Refillable bottles and sauce tubs for thick and thin sauces, even take a blob of miso paste to make broth from hot water at lunchtime.

This set of [molds, cups and cutters, for example,] ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075KPZ1KH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_taa_3.fEAb2QA80WJ) is super cute and useful, there are so many choices.

If you search there for "portable chopsticks" you'll find lots of adorable sets (I love a spoon with my chopsticks) like these beauties. Many of the cases can attach to the tote you carry the bento box in. I have never been a fan of the utensils going inside the food box. 😀

What are you looking for / what are you picky about with regards to robustness? Size? Aesthetics? Since this is your first box, you should probably come into this knowing that Bento boxes are generally pretty small compared to most lunch boxes made/sold in the U.S., so that will be an adjustment if that's what you're used to.

With that in mind, I started with this one; it's ~870 ml, so it's a touch larger than most, the lid locks into place so you don't have to worry about spills in transit so much, and mine stood up quite well to microwaving/diswashers. The removable compartments/divider were a much less finicky way to get a hang of dish arrangement, too. Should be a solid way to go for a first box.

u/drowningGreenBean · 4 pointsr/ZeroWaste

I have these and I really like them. It's fairly easy to see what is in the bag and they are machine washable!

My fiance and I have a set of these from Norwex, his sister is a consultant and we got some at a party she had last year, among some other products (which are really nice). But looking on Amazon I found some that have a lot of reviews and have a high overall star rating:

yes, the oil enables you to remove them from the muffin tray without half of it permanently sticking to the metal. spray oil works best. if you have the money, muffin cups make the process even cleaner. they even make reusable silicone muffin cups but they're a little pricey.

u/Lilta · 4 pointsr/Indiemakeupandmore

The wax doesn't disappear but it does eventually stop smelling.

For easy removal though I melt my tarts on the melter in these. It makes for easy clean up and easy to swap out scents while saving them for later when you want to switch back. Total wax melt game changer for me. :)

You could ditch them and invest in something like these. You should not that they are not leak proof but awesome to prepare a week's lunch.

Probably these food containers. Living by myself and trying to eat more healthy, prepping my food ahead of time in larger batches tends to be the best way to stay on track. So I bought these and a few round containers a few months ago and I've been using the hound out of them. I like those containers in particular because of the two compartments and how little room they take up in my cabinets. They're pretty sturdy, too, for the price. But because they're so cheap if one does crack or something it's no big deal to throw away. Or, you know, if I accidentally leave the container in my lunch bag over the weekend and it's too gross to open. Not that I would do that...

Thanks! Honestly you can use any type of container. This is what I use. It has two tiers, and my "bento scraps" (foods that I weighed and already logged but I didn't use for decorating) go in the top tier. I have this one as well, but the capacity of it is too much for what I want to eat per meal. I've seen other people on here use that type of bento box though, and it looks good! See these examples: Bento 1; Bento 2

u/AtomikRadio · 3 pointsr/Bento

I have this Skater box which is great. You can take out the inserts and have it be just a big open container, or use only one half of the inserts. I wouldn't consider it super leakproof if you're going to be jostling it around, storing it sideways, etc. but it does have a gasket and I've never had it leak.

I’ve used these religiously for my salad dressing/sauces

u/DefinitelyCaligula · 3 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

I have these little containers from Wegmans. They're supposed to be for packing dressings and wet salad ingredients together so you don't have a soggy, macerated mess of lettuce when you go to eat lunch, but they're the perfect size for a short trip's worth of product and not so big that you'd feel silly taking it somewhere for just a night. They come in a pack of four and the lids are different colors, which is good when you have four identical-looking white lotiony products to pack. Cold cream, moisturizer, the lotion I'm using to treat my KP, and either sunblock (if it's just a night or two, any longer and I would just bring the whole bottle) or body lotion. They fit perfectly into an Ipsy bag. Wham. Since they're for dressing you could probably put oil in them without it leaking everywhere, but I haven't personally tried it.

Edit: Here are the containers. They're really expensive on Amazon for some reason. I think I paid $3 or $4 for mine.

u/aes628 · 3 pointsr/MealPrepSunday

u/booreetoe · 3 pointsr/MealPrepSunday

A lot of people on here like those cheap black plastic containers that look like what you get from Chinese fast food restaurants. I have tried them, and they are too flimsy for my taste. I've had these containers for years, and they are as cheap or cheaper than the black ones. They do have issues if you microwave tomato based sauces (like most plastic), but they seal well, are very durable, machine washable, and very cheap.

Edit: They also nest really well for storage, and the lids match several different sized bases so you aren't always hunting for the right lid.

u/bacon_music_love · 3 pointsr/xxfitness

I almost bought myself this Easy Find Lid Rubbermaid set since it was on sale (not anymore unfortunately). I wanted a variety of sizes, especially the tiny ones for salad dressing! It has 21 containers with lids, and the larger lids fit multiple sizes. Plus it looks like the lids and containers snap together when stacked.

Another option is this Rubbermaid TakeAlong set, made of much thinner/less rigid plastic. These ones are designed to potentially be disposable (you wouldn't be devastated if you left them behind).

Both sets are BPA-free and microwave, freezer, and dishwasher safe.

We tried 2 things: Buy some strong shelve plastic and wrap it around the xpen so they can't stick their feet to climb out.

Or make a "top" of cardboard so it's facing inwards. It acts like a visual and physical blocker so they can't climb out the top.

Here's my xpens: http://imgur.com/a/NMcCO. The cardboard top works better, IMO, cause the pup can still see you. But... it's a bitch and a half to make. The clear plastic isn't very "clear".

Warning: Don't leave her alone in the xpen unsupervised until you redo the xpen. Ours got his foot stuck once on the top bar while he was trying to jump over. He was dangling upside down for a second before I ran over to him.

EDIT: If your pup isn't a chewer, another option is a fabric play pen

Honestly, this should be part of harm-reduction 101. IMO, it's as important as having a milligram scale when dealing with potent addictive substances.

It's not perfect, but it helps so much. It's saved me countless times from redosing addictive benzos and stimulants. I've got my entire stash locked up right now... (8 hours remaining).

At first you get pissed off, "why the FUCK did I lock it for so long?", then the next day you're like, "thank god I didn't keep redosing".

You get used to it. Just make a habit of always locking it up after dosing, even if you think you don't need to.

I was thinking about making a detailed post about my experiences using one of these things. I might do it later. Anyways, I highly recommended these boxes.

Edit: One hexen-specific tip is to weigh out your dose, lock it up, and THEN take your dose. Because it's a lot harder get yourself to lock that shit up after you're high and immediately fiending for more. Or if you do plan on redosing, lock it for 90 minutes or whatever your desired redose interval is.

Here’s a few options I’ve had good luck with.
I personally eat mostly paleo, and rarely go out, so everything is cooked from scratch, every week.
Weck Jars: great glass (and rubber) jars for storing just about anything. I like these for storing portions, and sauces/dips: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M71UCKA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_jjoqDbJZ6FR26

Larger glass containers, I use these for larger portions of just about everything. Air tight, reusable, etc. I personally use the ikea brand, but same concept: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LN810PM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_pmoqDbMMM817D

Stasher brand bags, made of silicon, heat/freeze proof, reusable, etc. make for a great plastic bag replacement: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RC84B75/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_7ooqDbGS9GWQ2

Another option is always mason jars. They’ve been around for ever! Are relatively inexpensive, reusable, dishwasher safe, freezer safe, etc. Can also be vacuum sealed! I use these to store most of my raw ingredients, flours, nuts, powders, etc. I would recommend sticking with either wide-mouth or regular, but not both. Combining the two, gets old, when you have a few dozen!

Hope some of this stuff helps!

u/hinyancat · 3 pointsr/MealPrepSunday

it's about $10 for a medium glass one here. it will last forever. I think that's alright. sometimes there's good sales you can get it for about $4.

Another user here of the 3 gallon/ (12 quart) rubbermaid container and lid. I cut a very small hole in the lid for my anova to fit into and it hardly loses any water even on >24 hr cooks. Plus the lid is flexible enough to just lift one or two corners and position bags. you can also use it to keep a zip top bag in place instead of clips or vacuum bags.

I also use this ikea pot lid organizer to help separate bags or weigh down food that just keeps wanting to float. It is pretty nice because you can turn it around and remove pegs to customize the shape for what you are cooking.

http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TJTWR04?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00

Something else that is nice to use is a pair of tongs with silicone tips so that they don't rip your bags but still grip your food for removal or changing the placement of food, because you don't want to stick your hands in hot water!

u/elangomatt · 3 pointsr/tacobell

It is only necessary to weigh things down with sous vide if they're floating. If you use a ziplock bag you can get most of the air out using the water displacement method where you put your food in the ziplock and mostly seal it. Then you dunk the ziplock bag into water almost up to the seal and the water pushes most of the air out.

You'll never get all of the air out though with that method so a cheap foodsaver is a good idea. Also some foods (like veggies) give off gas as they're cooking so they still need to be weighed down. I actually have a pot lid organizer from IKEA that is great since it can keep your food separated for better water circulation but it can also be flipped over to act as a weight when necessary. As you can see from the Amazon reviews, this is a pretty popular alternate use. It probably goes without saying but head on over to /r/sousvide if you want to see what we're up to!

u/culasthewiz · 3 pointsr/sousvide

Good question. What you see in the last picture is a 5lb shoulder roast that I threw in this morning. It was too big for the pinching action you describe so I added a knife to the bag and attached magnets to the rack which is holding the shoulder in place.

But yes, this rack can be used in a variety of ways: the squish method you mentioned, the magnet setup I described, or you can use binder clips to attach the bag to the metal posts. All really depending on what you're cooking.

I usually attach it and then gently lower it into the water until I get my fingers almost to the surface of the water and then drop it in. To remove, I've used tongs and silicone gloves. I've tried barehanding it a few times - certainly not recommended.

The rack is fine. It's been through probably 30 SV sessions and it's holding up pretty well. It's a cheapo Ikea deal so there's a little bit of rust but the price is definitely right! Here's a link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TJTWR04/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My hubby and I were both doing our PhDs at the same time at one point so I totally get the having no life thing. :D

  • Along the lines of the pocket knife, you can search for items like "everyday carry" or "EDC" items -- this includes flashlights, pocket knives, tactical pens, etc. PhD STEM types tend to like practical things. I've found some cool stuff for my hubs this way.
  • Another thing is one of these books: http://phdcomics.com/store/ -- they are collections of comic strips but they're hilarious and super relatable to graduate school. They used to release a calendar every year but looks like they stopped. :(
  • Other non-conventional gifts to consider based on the fact that he's in graduate school and has no time on his hands...
    • Buy a pack of these disposable takeout containers and make frozen pre-prepared meals for him. If he's spending THAT much time in the lab, chances are he isn't eating as great as he should be. I cannot tell you enough how much this would've been appreciated by either of us while we were in graduate school. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0742M47V5/
    • Depending on your geolocation, there are some services that come pick up your laundry on a specific day of the week, do your laundry for you, and then return it, folded, and everything (Wash & Fold services). For reference to what I am talking about, it's similar to this company: https://www.rinse.com/ If you're near a university, there's an increased chance of you having these services nearby. If you got him something like a couple months of this service, it's another thing that is a hassle to keep up with when you're super busy with work but one of those things that has to get done either way.
    • Depending on his eating habits, a grubhub (or similar) gift cert could be good if he orders takeout for either lunches or dinners during the week. https://www.grubhub.com/
    • Spotify or Pandora subscription -- depends on if he enjoys music and what kind of lab he is in (i.e., whether he can play music while working). If he does enjoy music, another option is wireless headphones.
    • Does he drink tea or coffee? There are lots of nerdy mugs out there and you can pair that with some a nice tea assortment or coffee blend. If he does drink it but doesn't tend to make it himself, is there a coffee shop nearby to campus that offer gift certs?
    • If he's working in a wet lab, chances are he can't bring beverages inside with him -- so you might consider a nice new water bottle (https://www.amazon.com/Contigo-AUTOSEAL-Stainless-Bottle-Monaco/dp/B01N7LKY1F/) or a rugged travel mug (https://www.amazon.com/Contigo-AUTOSEAL-Stainless-Steel-Travel/dp/B00HZI5XNO/). The autosealing (hot and cold) ones by Contigo are very popular because they can be used on the go without worrying about leaking. If you have to leave your mug outside of the lab if you don't finish your coffee, you most likely want something that's also covered too.
    • If he writes or takes notes a lot, don't underestimate the power of a really nice pen. Super useful and randomly just brings great joy to us grad school folks. :D

This is what i came to say, make large batches of things now and put them in single or double serving containers and cook/reheat afterwards. Try looking at recipes at once a month cooking . Don't forget you have to wash dishes afterward so make sure you are using dishes that can be cleaned one handed! (as in dishwasher safe or small, no handwash pots and pans etc. Also, if you have someone who can come in once a week to help maybe you could try some weekly meal prep ala budget bytes .

As far as good containers, I like vacuum sealing but if you don't have one or know someone who will borrow you one try these, I've heard good things (not aff) meal prep containers or these for liquids soup container

Also here's a link from once a month meals about single serve freezing that might be helpful!

If you want reusable containers, Mason jars work great, just read the guidelines on how to freeze in them and let them defrost in your fridge before you reheat. Also, if you are planning on a couple of dishes that use the same baking pan, you can line the pan with foil, freeze the dish, take the food plus foil out of the pan and stick it in a Ziploc to store until you are ready!

Don't forget to label!! I promise you will forget what it is or how to cook it by the time you eat it, so it's worth the time, for sure!

"Bento Boxes"

I got these when I used to get quick meals at a place called My Fit Foods, the meals came in these containers and I saved them. I have had the lot for 8+ years now and still use them over and over with no warping. I'm sure they come in all kinds of sizes I use mine for individual meals.

Good for you! its not easy but once you start you will feel so much better!

First make a meal plan for the week ie. How many days are you going to have that you can or will cook for the week. plan accordingly that way you can eat leftovers in between cooking days.

Also plan around your staples for the least expensive menu. That being said you can cook a large amount of something such as chili, spaghetti sauce, soups etc... and freeze them in serving sized containers to make an easy meal for lunch or dinner if you find you don't have enough time to cook. the crock pot can take care of a lot of that for you.

Meal prep containers are a great way to freeze and to portion control your food. like these I love these use them all the time

These are great for things like Spaghetti, or lasagna, enchiladas etc...

One of the best mods i made to my Majestouch 2 is putting shelf liner under the pcb. It requires voiding your warranty however, as you have to remove a sticker to get to a screw on the bottom of the case but I had to open my case anyway to swap in the custom cable I ordered for mine. This is pretty much what you want, just put a layer or two in the bottom of the case once you remove the pcb, then just put the pcb and top case back on and screw back together.

u/kanst · 2 pointsr/powerlifting

Our gym just has a bunch of shelf liners laying around that you can put on the bench and it makes it way grippier.

u/ladybessyboo · 2 pointsr/NailArt

Ah! I have an answer for this! And I'm pretty sure it's easier/less craft-intensive than the other option I saw linked.

So I used a 3 ring binder and 3 different types of plastic sheet protectors: trading card organizers (Avery 76016), 4x6 photo pages (Avery 13401), and regular 8.5x11 sheet protectors (any ones that aren't too thin along the edge with the holes should do.) The only other thing you need is a roll of shelf grip liner like this, and some reasonably sharp scissors.

Using the shelf grip liner, I held my differently sized plates up to it and figured out about how big they were. It doesn't have to be exact, I tend to err on the slightly smaller side, it shouldn't hang off the edges too much (although I just do squares for the little circle plates because I'm lazy and squares are easier.) The shelf liner makes it easy because it is made of little "squares" that you can count if necessary. Then, I cut the correct size liner for one of every plate at every corresponding size. You could use some kind of spray adhesive to attach them to the back of the plates, but because of the "grip" functionality it's naturally a little sticky, so I just kind of press it onto the back of the plate, carefully slide it into the sheet protector, and close it and let the weight of all the plates in the binder apply pressure over time, so by the next time I open the binder to use the plate, they've sort of been fused together and I don't have to worry about it falling off.

Small circle plates go in the trading card pages, medium square & rectangle plates go in the photo pages, and huge plates like the Cheeky Jumbos go in the full size pages. Be sure not to store it vertically like you normally would with a binder—the weight of the metal pulls on the holes and causes them to break. I store mine flat now (ever since figuring out this design flaw and having to replace a bunch of pages, lolsob) and haven't had any problems.

If you need any pictures to illustrate what I mean, just lmk! I'm dogsitting at a friend's house for the holiday weekend, but can get you pics of mine when I get back home Tuesday :)

ETA: I can't tell if the grip liner link is working properly so here's another one.

-Cabbage: Saute onion and cabbage with soy sauce, salt and pepper to taste, until soft or desired level of cooked.

-Chicken: Wash and pat dry chicken thighs with paper towels. Cut into bite size pieces. Coat with corn start and cook in a nonstick pan with a little bit of oil (not fried) until golden brown. Add enough teriyaki sauce to coat and cook a little longer to get some nice darkening.

-Broccoli: Heat a pan with a little bit of oil until very hot, add broccoli and toss to coat. Add a few table spoons of water and cover with lid to steam the broccoli. Once all the florets are bright green remove the lid and cook off any remaining water and continue to cook to get some brown crispy sides on the broccoli. Season with salt and a little bit of sesame oil. (This is my absolute favorite way to enjoy broccoli. It doesn't even need the sesame oil in my opinion)

-Fruit Salad: Cut apple into slices, use veggie cutters to make cute shapes. Mix with cut strawberries. Squeeze over the juice of half a lemon to keep them fresh and prevent browning. Also adds a wonderful freshness to them.

I think that covers everything. Anymore questions lemme know.

I like to pan fry tofu. I'll season cornstarch with some salt and pepper and dip firm tofu strips into it. Then I'll fry it in a little bit of vegetable oil. I'll then slice up some avocado and turn it into a musubi or just place it on top of rice. If you want it in a cute bento style, you could always cube the tofu and add some nori over it. Slice the avocado and fan it out. To add some color, you can also add in some cherry tomatoes and baby carrots. You can also keep a tiny thing of soy sauce on the side in the bento....something like this

I would actually recommend you build this composter as the type you linked to can be difficult in my opinion. Especially if you are in an apartment, lifting and sorting trays while trying to harvest worms from one bin to another is going to be a messy process. If you don't want to build a wooden framed one, I just used a tall plastic laundry basket instead.

With the composter I linked to you will just harvest finished castings from the bottom. To make tea you will just take those castings and put them in a big fine mesh bag (check out your local grocery store for reusable produce bags) and them let that bag soak in a bin of water. You can experiment to see how concentrated you'll want to make you tea.

How long you wait and how much you get depends on how much and how often you feed the worms. Your colony size will adjust to how you feed them. Expect to wait at least a month though.

u/mtg4l · 2 pointsr/Cooking

Y'all need to get yourselves some reusable produce bags and cut down on that carbon footprint!

Note I just selected the first amazon result - there are many available

u/cleogray · 2 pointsr/ZeroWaste

I'm in a similar spot as you - trying to reduce my waste within the constraints of being a uni student. One of the first changes I made was buying these. You could make produce bags yourself if you're crafty, but I'm not and didn't have time to figure out how to do it. Also, relying on freezer bags is a lot harder if you just don't have them in the house. We stopped buying them, and although tupperware does take up more space in the fridge, I think it's worth it. You also save money that would have gone towards freezer bags.

For cheap cleaning rags I just cut up old clothes/sheets that are at the end of their life, and keep them in a bucket under the sink. It's easy to just grab those instead of paper towel for spills/wiping the table/counter tops/cleaning the bathroom, etc. We throw them in the wash when we have a lot of dirty ones. For napkins, I went to a local thrift shop and bought a bunch of plain cloth napkins. They're nothing fancy so I really don't mind them getting dirty (although they always come clean in the wash).

As for bathroom supplies, you can find relatively cheap shampoo bars, and I've found that they last me much longer than bottled shampoo. I get mine from Lush, but you can definitely get cheaper - I'd recommend checking Etsy for some homemade options.

I'm still working on bathroom products, especially face wash and moisturizer, but I know there are a lot of diy tutorials online. Good luck! I've learned that even baby steps are important steps :)

It took less than 40 minutes to prep.

Lunch:

  • Cherry tomatoes, Kalamata olives and Cornichons.

  • Vegetable Samosas bought from the frozen section in an Indian store (I love finding delicious food that makes it easy for me).

  • Energy balls : I eyeball everything, I don’t have precise measurements but this is a very forgiving recipe and you can customize it to your liking. The base is softened dates in water, then much them with fork or hands, I just use my hands. Add nuts (I used walnuts here), blended Chia seeds and Flax seeds, toasted old fashioned oats ( I toast them in a pan over low heat ), shredded coconuts and 1 big spoonful of peanut butter. Mix well and make little balls ( I used an ice cream scooper ).

  • mini sweet peppers stuffed with brie, put in toaster oven for 10 to 15 minutes, then I sprinkled them with Trader Joe’s Everything but the bagel seasoning.

  • Crackers: I get these from my Local Mexican Restaurant when I buy Ceviche.

    Dinner:

  • Mason Jar Salad: I just use whatever I have in the fridge and stack them up.
Tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, pears, purple potatoes and Romaine lettuce.

  • Simple vinaigrette in the small containers.

I will pair this with Pan cooked Salmon ( not shown ).

    Containers:

  • Mason jars wide mouth 16oz. I bought mine from the dollar store.

  • U Konserve Divided To-Go containers: These are expensive but I bought mine at a discount store and I like how they are not too heavy like the glass containers.

If you do a lot of soups and stews, then I would recommend a good set of Rubbermaid storage containers. Amazon has a 42 piece set for $20. They are reusable, work great in the freezer and can also be used to store leftovers in the refrigerator. A lot less waste for the landfill.

u/p_qrs · 2 pointsr/xxfitness

I use these as my go-to plastic containers. The smallest ones are perfect for sauces and dressings. Never had an issue with leaks and I've had them for years!

u/xerexerex · 2 pointsr/Cooking

I like Rubbermaid's Easy Find Lid sets. I've had them for a few years now and they're still in great shape. A bit of scuffing and staining on the bigger stuff that I use a lot, but other than that still good.

u/Pierogi_Master · 2 pointsr/personalfinance

Doesn't really sound like a decent price to me. Wife and I bought this 42 piece Rubbermaid container set a few years ago around Black Friday for $15 or so.

It has different sizes so it is convenient for lunches, longer storage in the fridge or freezer. I've been using the smaller ones to hold salad toppings or dressing for example.

Medium size ones will be filled with a grain (bulgur, quinoa, rice etc) on Sunday and depleted throughout the week. Now that I'm getting fresh veggies from my CSA/Farmers Market I'll also chop an onion, pepper etc to toss on salads. This helps with my "I just got off work and don't want to do shit but drink beer" This way if I want something to eat there is just that much less prep to do.

Larger one gets filled with the meat of the week which is usually a larger cut like a boston butt, chuck roast or whole chicken or thighs/legs if they were on sale.

I've managed to cut our eating out drastically with the above.

u/Techwood111 · 2 pointsr/keto

Hey, you are already on your way!

Log everything you eat as accurately as you can. Get a cheap food scale if you don't have one already. I prefer MyFitnessPal for logging, and have this scale.

As has been said, use the keto calculator to get your numbers, then plug 'em in, and start eating and logging. As large as you are, you will have a pretty high food allowance; hunger should not be an issue for you. It may be helpful for you to spread your meals out over the day - smaller meals, more often.

You mentioned preparing stuff in advance. Get a ton of Rubbermaid and consider shopping for a deep-freeze. I LOVE having lots of pre-made, portioned out food to choose from. It makes it easy to grab something good when you are hungry, instead of bailing out and eating something you'd really rather not.

I prefer to weigh every single day, the very first thing in the morning. That helps me to begin each day in the right frame of mind. It is great to see the graph of my steady decrease in weight.

Consider getting a FitBit. I have a "One." I like it a lot; it syncs automatically with MyFitnessPal, and if I have walked more than normal, I get to eat more calories if I want to. A very small walk is a great way to earn a little snack if you are wanting one. Calories in, calories out... almost too simple to be true, but it works!

KCKO is a pretty good mantra.

Drop that weight, screw the gastric bypass. (I've seen plenty of those that didn't help). Once you are fit, get that hernia addressed, with a huge reduction in the chance that you'll die in the OR. Seriously, you are doing the right thing, taking charge of your health. If you just muster the courage to give it a solid try, you will be amazed at how easy it is, and you'll cuss yourself for not starting sooner.

Best wishes, and keep us updated!

Silicon CupCAKE liners

u/isaacniles · 2 pointsr/boardgames

I like to keep a small supply of disposable plastic containers (like 4 oz. Gladware bowls) for storage in games with bits per player, i.e. Ticket to Ride. All trains of one color, for example, go into a bowl, so setup is as easy as give each person a bowl. Then the pieces stay organized and are already in a container for quick setup. In the cases where a bowl like that won't fit in the box (Power Grid comes to mind), you can store silicone cupcake liners in the box to put pieces in.

Also, for anyone new to board gaming, if you seem to have more plastic baggies than you need that come with a game, keep the extras somewhere. Never know when you'll need a few extras.

I am going to guess Contact Paper?

One thing I actually miss on electronics is that faux wood paneling that was on things like TVs and receivers in the 80s to early 90s. So I actually really like what OP has done here, and might do it myself one day to a computer build.

u/darthevil · 2 pointsr/discdyeing
u/TorresD · 2 pointsr/Watercolor

Nice video, definitely ambitious for a beginner! The curl highlights are an example of a look I would approach without masking fluid. It might take a little more time but with an accurate sketch and some careful dry brush technique you can preserve enough white to maintain that shiny look. While I encourage you to challenge yourself to improve brush technique, I realize this strategy might not appeal to everyone. It can be difficult to avoid the white areas — especially if you're still getting the feel for your brushes.

You have good instincts for the alternatives! White crayon works great as a wax resist. I have also seen people use candles and other waxes to do this. There are some drawbacks. You can't manipulate or remove the wax once it is on the paper and it keeps resisting so you can't easily paint over the top of it. Also, white wax is difficult to see on white paper (it does catch the light differently) — you can of course use other colors but the example you gave had page-white highlights. This technique is good for adding texture.

White gouache is also a good thought. Unless applied very thickly, white gouache won't be as bright as the original paper and can move around some when painted over. White watercolors also exist but tend to be less bright and more ready to mix and run after drying. There are also "liquid paper" products that come in a variety of different whites to match most watercolor papers, these dry permanent. A similar option is watercolor ground which is essentially a porous gesso that absorbs watercolor. The drawbacks are that these processes will take the paint a little differently than regular paper — Colors can seem more washed out and almost pastel though results will vary between methods, paints, brands. These are best for finishing touches or "oh shit" emergencies.

You can also use acrylics with watercolor. White acrylic over the top or acrylic medium as a resist before painting. I suggest using matte medium. Keep in mind that acrylic is basically plastic so it wont absorb water and has a tendency to stand out when used with watercolor.

The above techniques are the ones I would recommend for the specific challenge you mentioned, go with whatever makes you most comfortable but definitely try with only brushwork if you're at all inclined. I'll go ahead and list more of the resist & whitening methods I'm familiar with because one of them might appeal more to you.

/u/rulenumber303 mentioned gel pens. I think they work great for fine detail but aren't good for large areas. Most artists use Gelly Roll pens — many gel pen brands wont work well over watercolor.

You can also use tapes as a resist. This RollerBond product dispenses removable tape in thin lines. You can use some
Scotch 'Magic' Tape which forms a very hard line or masking tape/painters tape which has a slightly different line quality. For large areas you could try Frisket Film which is basically a friendlier form of Contact Paper. You can cut complex shapes out of most of these using an Exacto knife if needed. Remember to burnish (push down & rub smooth) for best results. These are good for straight lines, hard lines, or large areas.

Speaking of exacto knives, you can use them to scrape or scratch the paper to reveal the white beneath. Make sure you're using a thicker paper (e.g. 140lb, 300lb) and be careful not to paint over that area again because the paint will appear even darker than usual. This is a good technique for fine hairs or stars.

White watercolor pencils can be used but this tends to be faint and doesn't offer many advantages. It could be nice for a light texture somewhere.

There is a lot you can do with stencils. (cheesecloth, leaves, coins, w/e)

I've seen people use a lot of other random techniques involving things like white out or oil pastels. I haven't tried them but they're out there.

You've got a good attitude about creative limitations and as you can see there is no shortage of alternatives. I'm sure you've encountered many of these options in your searching but I thought I'd give you my opinions and you can decide what suits you best. I left out some wet resist techniques like adding water or alcohol because if you've made it this far you must be getting tired of reading by now. Let me know if you have any questions and if you want more specific recommendations just ask. Good luck!

u/spudcake · 2 pointsr/bleachshirts

I use clear plastic film like this. It's easy to draw the pattern on with a permanent marker and cut out and it sticks to the shirt really well.

u/georgehotelling · 2 pointsr/travel

Not travel stickers, but a buddy of mine covers his laptop with stickers. He also replaces his laptop from time to time, and doesn't want to lose them. His solution is that when he gets a new laptop, he covers the back with a clear sticky covering (something like this). When he covers the laptop or gets a new one, he can peel off all the stickers, put them on the wall and start again.

As for me, I like to use stickers as a cheap way to remember that everything in life is impermanent. It's OK to put it on a water bottle that I'll eventually lose. It's just stuff.

u/thirdegree · 2 pointsr/Drugs

I'd recommend 1) getting some help because kicking addiction on your own is incredably difficult, and 2) getting one of these to stop the binging. This is going to suck. It will be ok.

u/altaccountthree · 2 pointsr/sex

It's something I have flirted with, but I'm too impatient and my SO is too lazy to stick with the regimen needed to make it work.

Doing it by yourself could be easier since it's just you and your keyholder source to keep you honest about your time in chastity. Some people get time-locked containers (like this one) to keep the key away from themselves.

That sense of powerlessness is heady stuff.

u/groveofcedars · 2 pointsr/loseit

Sunday is a great day for meal prep. I recommend glass containers like these. When I first started I made the same lunch for all five days of the work week and I was going crazy with boredom by day 3. Now I have at least two different lunches per week that I alternate. My favorite is quinoa and white meat chicken with veggies or quinoa and lentils on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. For Tuesday, Thursday, I make salad in a mason jar.

u/kindrudekid · 2 pointsr/personalfinance

Do what I do, Make your meal at work.

You need to push for your work to have a small toaster oven.

here is what you will need:

  1. a nice oven save containers
  2. Your own silverware if office only has pastic.
  3. those cooler aid thingy/ice pack
  4. a cheap thermometer but not needed after a while you know how your work oven works
  5. well insulated cooler. I'll recommend LL Bean
  6. kosher salt , prefernly somthing with large flakes

Now go home and make a few dressings/marinade for meat.

Now just go crazy mixing and matching the meat/marinade, throw them in the oven save container, put that in your cooler with ice packs and start baking them fresh at work.

    This has few advantages:

  7. You will be seasoning the meat for quite a while, the salt will draw out moisture, dissolve and enter the meat back in.
  8. you can mix and match all kinds of meat. I stick with salmon and tilapia, way healthier.
  9. You can mix and match sides too!, today carrots, tomorrow rice, day after asparagus.
  10. eat from the same damn bowl
  11. you can eat fish, baking wont stick up the kitchen like microwaving will.
  12. If you get a large enough cooler, you can bring fruits and drinks/soda if you have an expensive vending machine at work!
  13. You can bring frozen meat and let it thaw till lunch time if needed and slather the marinade on top later.

    Some cool marinades:

  14. Ginger scallion sauce
  15. Creole chilli WARNING: This shit is hot, better used as a side in small amounts for simple salt and peppered meat.
  16. various version of lemon pepper.

offcourse this means starting the cooking 30 min before intended lunch time

I've been using these for a bit over a year, now. One has broken in that time. I don't run them through the dishwasher; I hand-wash them but I do use them in the microwave (with the lids).

u/wenchkins · 2 pointsr/keto

I use these, though I have the 2 compartment ones. They don't leak (Though liquid can move between compartments), and stand up to repeated microwaving and dish washing really well. I've had the current set for a bit over a year.

I get mine from Amazon -- in addition to being microwave-safe, they are also dishwasher safe, very durable, and delightfully stackable :)

u/Commiserator · 2 pointsr/MealPrepSunday

If you're interested in containers with compartments, I got these based on the suggestion of another user on this forum.

Only complaint is that the lids are fragile, must be careful when taking them off.

u/Genesis2001 · 2 pointsr/MealPrepSunday

Curious. Is this assessment limited to only the containers linked in OP?

I've had my eye on these for a couple months now but haven't had the money due to YNAB budgeting (money went more to savings than expendable money).

edit: If either OP or the ones I linked are bad, can you recommend alternatives? :)

u/sosoboredatwork · 2 pointsr/sousvide
  1. It's not usually an issue, but some people have said they think it has damaged their device. A common solution is wrapping a dish towel around the device directly above the lid. The towel will get wet from steam, but keep the top of the Anova dry.

  2. It's generally better to re-bag, because you don't know what's in those bags, and you don't know if they're designed for that. Sometimes the seal will break or the bag may have nasty stuff in it. However that was probably not the issue with getting the steak to temp. As has been mentioned, if it gets stuck in a corner and the water isn't circulating well, one of these will help: https://www.amazon.com/Ikea-VARIERA-701-548-00-Organizer-Stainless/dp/B00TJTWR04. Keeps it in place and allows the water to flow around it. Also, do you have a good thermometer? Could be the issue for both things if not.
u/esdakota22 · 2 pointsr/sousvide

IKEA lid organizers! I love mine so much, and use them for palettes. I keep one for eye palettes and a second one for face palettes. They can be stretched or squished to whatever size your collection needs. You won't need to replace the organizers if you run out of room for palettes, just stretch them so you'll be able to put 2 palettes per "slot". They also are very minimal in the sense that your items won't be blocked by a piece of plastic so you can see them better and reach for them easily.

u/TriflingHusband · 2 pointsr/nfl

You can get really creative and fit a lot of meat on a 18" WSM. I bought this last summer and used it to get 4 racks of ribs sideways on a single rack.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TJTWR04/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You can also buy vertical chicken roasters to fit 2 or 3 chickens on a single rack.

https://www.amazon.com/Fox-Run-5667-Vertical-Non-Stick/dp/B000I1X4RC/

To make a full packer brisket fit on my 18" rack, I will wrap a brick in aluminium foil and put it under the brisket to arch it up in the middle. It doesn't affect the bark or the cooking time and is easy to find.

u/gregg1e · 2 pointsr/sousvide

There are infinite options for setup so I'll simply provide what I use:

I have a cambro food container I cook in. Rubbermaid works well but I needed something bigger. I use an IKEA lid organizer to hold my bags in place (this didn't fit in the rubbermaid). I only put foil or lids on the top for extremely long cooks (18-24 hours), you won't lose much water in a basic dinner cook. I have a rubber mat on my counter for hotter cooks to protect it. I also use a vacuum sealer for my food and found that placing a pyrex dish in the water helps keep them from floating. Here are some links to what I have purchased

Grab one of these to separate your food, or as a weight on top for larger cuts.

They rust after a while, but for the price they're great.

If you don't have an Ikea near you, they do sell them on amazon but for about twice the price.

u/AsherMaximum · 2 pointsr/sousvide

I use this pot lid rack to stand up and separate steaks. For stuff that tends to float, I flip it upside down, trapping the bags underneath (and the posts can still be used to keep bags separated for good water flow).

u/prophetsavant · 2 pointsr/sousvide

So to piggy back on this topic, I have a 3 gallon container and was having a hard time finding a good rack. I finally went with the Ikea variera pot lid holder which is adjustable in length. I was a little worried about the plastic feet but they have held up including one 2 hour cook at 176 F.

Here is an amazon link which shoes what it looks like, the Ikea item number, and would allow someone without an Ikea to purchase (I think it is only $6 at Ikea though).

It is super simple. Anova even has an app so you can monitor your cooker while you are in another room. They are on sale right now which is why I pulled the trigger.

anova precision $155 w the code SPRING25

12 qt container $24.95

container lid $11.08

apparently you can also just float ping pong balls on the top as well - having a lid insulates and slows the water evaporation

cheap adjustable rack to keep the meat in place $13.21

vacuum sealer $69.99

but for this you can just use freezer bags and water displacement to get a similar outcome

(32 Oz. 2 Compartment Meal Prep Containers Durable BPA Free Plastic Reusable Food Storage Container Microwave & Dishwasher Safe w/ Airtight Lid For Portion Control & Bento Box Lunch Box)

I have been using them successfully and they are pretty good, but they are not leak-proof. Even brand new they weren't so "airtight" that dressing didn't leak out of them if they were accidentally turned on their side. I portion my dressing into once cups but a few times something like Thai sauce has leaked through onto my paper lunch bag. So I would be weary of that.

Also the compartment isn't quite big enough. I like it for chicken/rice since I don't eat a lot of that, but for something like a sandwich with normal bread or pizza (I meal prep for BF who eats a lot more than me) it's juuuuuuuust too small. I kind of wish we would have gotten one without a divider. But I know some people wouldn't have a problem, and the divider does come in handy when I want to separate a small side from a small meal. Just my 2 cents.

If we had more space I would get a set of ten non-compartmentalized containers for occasionally having bigger servings.

Overall I would give them a 4/5 stars.

u/ChefGuru · 1 pointr/AskCulinary

Those are the EXACT rubber mats that I was talking about. My current kitchen uses those. I have a similar one, also, but I prefer using the wet towel.

I've used this type of rubber shelf liner, before. To clean it, all you really need to do is rinse it under hot water. If you're really worried about it, dunk it in some hot, soapy water, swish it around, then rinse and dry it. That stuff's not all that expensive, so even if you replace the piece that you use every other week, or once a month, a single $5 roll will last you the entire year.

I have these reuseable mesh produce bags. I put all the greens into the mesh bag, put a folded paper towel in the bottom of the container and put the mesh bag of green back on top. The mesh bag keeps the greens from touching the plastic and allows better airflow around the greens, and the paper towel absorbs the excess moisture.

I use a similar method for all my other produce too. A head of lettuce will stay crisp this way for months (no joke!), same with chard and kale, carrots, zuchs, etc.

XD I use command hooks near my front door to hold my keys and daily jacket. :)

There are actually products made to hold plastic bags. For $10... Looks awesome, but I can't fathom spending any money on it.

Personally, I reuse old tissue boxes to make my own "dispenser". Holds a crap-ton.

u/Mxfish1313 · 1 pointr/Flipping

Same, here, especially with Ralph's and Vons. About a year before the ban I even bought a plastic bag wall caddy and it made so many things nicer and easier... and now it doesn't work with the bigger, thicker ones.

I replied to OP and said that I actually asked my mom to send a bunch of the old, thin bags as packaging whenever she has to send something to me because she's in the midwest and still has more than she can use.

So I'm gonna go ahead an assume you were gifted this bento book, which is amazing. I have it too, I love it. If you DON'T have it (which I'd be surprised about), then you need it!

As far as ideas and recipes, you definitely need those Rubber Cupcake Liners, which are absolutey fantastic for sperating items in your bento. Additionally they are good for making cupcakes to take with you, OR, you can make these egg muffins for breakfast or lunch in them. This is my breakfast right now, it's genius. Plus I should have used liners for them, the pan was a bitch to clean out.

Also, I highly suggest you check out this website if you haven't yet. Her entire website is just making bento boxes, and things related to bento boxes. What I linked you too specifically is all of her recipes she uses, some of which is just genius.

I love bento boxes because it's something I'm a big advocate for: little portions of lots of things. Instead of just a sandwich, you can have a quarter of a sandwich, some carrots, a tiny chocolate bar, and a bit of pasta salad. It's genius.

I actually already have a more traditional bento box, but I find it's not very condusive to taking to work. The one I have on my Miscellaneous wishlist is one has a built in freezer pack (so I don't have to bring a cooler and ice pack), and lots of rearrangeable individual compartments, which is good since my meals change every day.

I hope that wasn't too rambly! I didn't mean to go on that much =P

u/cullen9 · 1 pointr/StonerEngineering

roor has several different ways they do it.

for labels you're basically sketching/drawing out a stencil on contact paper with a sharpie. then just cut out the parts you want frosted.

A permanent solution could be to use something like this clear contact paper. Not sure if it is specifically compatible with dry erase markers, but you could probably find out with some research. Keep in mind that this would permanently stick to your mats.

I was a daily smoker for around a year; currently down to about once every 2 weeks.

The thing that worked for me was a time-lockable safe (This is the one I got). I'd get high and then lock all of my weed in there for some amount of time. I started out setting it to 2 days, then 3, then a week, etc. Doing that, I was able to build up discipline for keeping sober. Eventually I didn't need to lock it at all during the week; just over weekends I've decided to remain sober. I'm hoping to soon get to a point where I don't need the safe at all to make good choices about when to smoke.

Good luck!

> By the way, how do you plan your "menue" for the week?

I am getting my notes together because next month will go more in depth into planning and execution, but a few pointers. Up front, the planning for the menu happens at home. I'll sit down with a few recipes I want to try, pair them with side dishes, and come up with a grocery list. I also have enough ingredients frozen in the freezer to make some old favorites if I feel like calling an audible.

  1. I only plan 3-4 fresh meals per week, because I try to make enough for leftovers. I find using special trays like these that you can get for much cheaper at restaurant supply stores to make your own TV dinners help a great deal with leftovers. As an added bonus, because they are frozen, you don't have to eat them the next night. During the lead-up to the birth of my second kid, I cooked every night and put the leftovers in the freezer so that I only had to cook 1-2 times a week for the first month. You can also save the sides separately from the entrees if you want to mix and match. Some things, like risotto, don't freeze particularly well, but it will keep for 3-4 days in the fridge and can be reheated or even cut into triangles and fried. I also do pizza nights on Fridays.
  2. Make heavy use of one pot meals and prep as much ahead of time. I freeze all my meats in ziplock bags ahead of time and thaw them by pouring in some brine or soy sauce and thawing them in the sink. That lends itself to very quick prep time. Thaw some pork chops in soy sauce, minced garlic, olive oil, and italian herbs ahead of time. Stab some red potatoes with a fork, microwave, and then cut into wedges. Brown the pork chops over medium high heat, add some liquid (broth, wine, beer, whatever you feel like cooking), add the potatoes, season with garlic salt, rosemary, and thyme, and simmer, covered until the pork chops are done (about 10-15 minutes). You can cut some romaine hearts or wilt some spinach in the liquid when you're done if you need green with your meals. I don't even reduce the liquid into a gravy most nights. If I'm feeling up to it, I may chop an onion and brown that after the pork chops but before adding the potatoes and liquid.
  3. Shoot for variety. There are different parts of a chicken, different cuts of pork, and all that. That prevents repetition and keeps you cooking stuff. If it feels like you just cooked a dish, you probably won't be up for it if you're tired.
  4. Don't feel bad about using pre-made. Everybody's gotta eat, but once you get the hang of it, there are many recipes that are almost as easy as stuff from a box.
  5. As far as stress of cooking, I know this doesn't apply to everybody, but I use cooking as stress relief. After a rough day, I'll come home, pour myself a drink, turn on the radio, and start cooking. A whole chicken doesn't talk back as you're dismembering it. Green Beans don't send nasty emails and CC your boss as you're snapping their ends off. An onion doesn't spoil game of thrones as you're chopping it. And finally, have fun with it. If you fail miserably at a dish (and I have, many many times), don't keep the leftovers and move on. That's the beauty of cooking, the journey and the destination are one and the same.
u/ked_man · 1 pointr/Cooking

I don't do bentos, but I bought some of these and pack leftovers. I put them in the fridge and chill them overnight and take them to work. I don't refrigerate or re-heat and other than sauces breaking everything is fine. I've gotten used to eating room-temp foods.

I learned it from some co-workers/friends who have done this daily for years with no ill effects.

Dinner on the other hand, I don't know if they would make it that long. You may want to stick with something longer lasting than leftovers.

u/hosway · 1 pointr/MealPrepSunday

this one is very popular here. . It’s great because it accordions in and out to fit different sized containers and food. I have 2, one that put on the bottom to space things out and one to put on top of the bags to stop floaters.

If you have an IKEA near you, they’re way cheaper in the store.

u/antarcticgecko · 1 pointr/sousvide

This is what you want. Look at the reviews, they’re all from sous viders. Works great.

u/frugal_masturbater · 1 pointr/sousvide

Generally you want good water circulation all around the meat. It looks like your steaks are making contact with the bottom of the pot. It'll still work because the pot also heats up, but it's sub-optimal.

I bought this thing to have a fully configurable rack to place bags in:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TJTWR04/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You can install/remove any of the stands, they screw in. No plastic parts, all stainless steel. Pretty cheap compared to other options.

In your case, I would have arranged the steaks 90 degrees rotated in the bag so you get good space between them, and then each steak can sit in it's own part of the rack, with the space between them helping bridge the gap. That would still only use one bag, and you get excellent water flow around each steak.

u/VerbalTease · 1 pointr/sousvide

Good suggestions here, but I might add to try and not overthink it when starting out. The first thing is getting into the practice of meal prepping. Get into the routine of batching your meals for the week first, then start fine tuning it. You'll find what works for you. I've found portion control works best for me more than anything. I use something like this.

u/shitshiner69 · 1 pointr/StudentNurse

Maybe some of those tiny little notebooks that fit in your pocket? I use those to write down vitals and such without lugging a clipboard around.

Hair ties since she’ll have to have her hair up, or if she would like them, I really love spin pins because I can have my hair up all day and never get a headache like I do from a pony tail.

Also don’t forget lunchbox stuff could be useful too because hospital cafeteria food is disgusting and generally not very healthy. Like maybe some glass Tupperware , a lunchbox, or a water bottle/cup.

Also if your friend is like me and likes to wear makeup, she will want a lipstick that won’t quit! This stuff stays on through my 12 hour shifts and I just love it!

Really depends on how much you want to spend, but I find that that these are the things that really got me through clinicals.

u/rlef · 1 pointr/mealprep

Split up the steps when you have time. Take 5-20 mins to do all the prep work — chopping, marinating, etc., and when you have another window, start the cooking!

What helped me was buying a 25 pack of meal prep containers from Costco (looks like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0742M47V5/). I had a small window of time the other day between feedings and was able to chop up a bunch of fruit and veggies and store them for salads, juicing, and smoothies. I also was able to marinate some meat and pop them into the freezer for use later. A lot of my time spent when preparing a meal is during the prepping period so having stuff chopped up or already marinated is a huge help.

We generally stick to quick-cooking food. Stir fries and grilled meats and veggies. I have an instant pot I like to use for stews, soups, and braised meats and this helps a lot as well.

But I also took a croissant into the shower the other day (and was done showering before I had finished my croissant) because sometimes there’s just no time.

Good luck, momma!

They are taller when filled than my Walmart ones so I can't stack as many in the fridge but they seem like better boxes. It was supposed to be 20 boxes but there were only 19 in my shipment.

[I got these.] (https://www.amazon.com/Meal-Prep-Containers-Count-Black/dp/B00SWXL61E/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=Isobag+meal+prep+containers&qid=1558536088&s=gateway&sr=8-3) I have their bag so I initially got an assortment and have really liked them. They've lasted several years, I just needed more. The plastic can handle the dishwasher, microwave, and the lids stay on nicely and don't leak. My personal favorite is the 28 oz size one. Seems to be the perfect size.

I'll warn you too. I was looking at these too and my coworker has them. Said his have melted in the dishwasher and the lid doesn't stay on all that tight.

These containers are what I’ve used for meal prep. They’re relatively cheap, store easily, and have lasted about a year of frequent use so far.

It's a soy sauce container, not sure if that liquid is soy sauce though.

I found them here on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001KOTJTS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They have a few other styles - some a more fancy with metal sides and what not - but I appreciated the simple and fully-transparent look of the ones above.... plus the price didn't hurt
