Either way, I would go with a plastic step bin. Hard plastic is easy to periodically clean and disinfect, even if it isn't as pretty. Plus, you can usually attach a charcoal filter to the inside of the lid, especially with higher end models or separately if you buy an attachable sleeve that sticks to the inside of the lid. This can help mitigate any lingering smells. If you want something study, simplehuman makes plain ol' 13 gallon step cans, and it will last a lifetime because the parts are replaceable.

Lower end, I recommend the sterilite and Rubbermaid cans in the same half-round shape. They are usually offered as a step can or a touch top (basically a step button you push at the lid), so you can determine what is best for him to use.

If disposable, you can get any size you are comfortable lifting the contents of (9 - 13 gallon, but I wouldn't go higher than that because wet things get heavy and repetitive motions are dangerous with adult care) and just use the right size plastic bag.

If you are talking cloth, there are pul liners which perfectly fit a sterilite 6 gallon step can, maybe other sizes too (edit: that can be washed with the diapers). However, they aren't always leak proof so ymmv, especially the larger you go. Let me know if you want recommendations for them. Best of luck!

Totally. I just purchased the same one for myself, the simplehuman Mini Round Step Trash Can. It ended up being smaller than I imagined but it looks great and doesn't take up a lot of space in my bathroom. I've had a larger trash can from simplehuman in my Kitchen and Bedroom for years and they are holding up perfectly. Not the cheapest trash cans you can buy but they are pleasing to look at.

You can build one yourself for MUCH cheaper, but this is the basic idea. Basically a screen in a frame and a collection chamber. Take the trim and jostle it around over the screen so all the trich heads fall off and go through the screen, while the plant matter stays in the top part.

Personally I think bubble hash or BHO is a better idea, or even QWISO, but if you want actual keif as opposed to hash, dry sifting is the way to go.

My cat is the same way, except with plastic. Also had intussusception and had expensive surgery. This is how I deal with it.

(1) Any plastic bags are discarded outside in the garbage immediately. If I need to keep some, they are stored in a high, out of the way place.

(2) I got a kitchen trash can with a lockable lid.

(3) My litter box is not near a bathroom, so I use the litter genie for waste disposal.

(4) Anything my cat might chew on is stored in a closet. The closet is always kept shut.

I know it's a pain in the butt, but I'm not going through another USD2,000 surgery again. I keep him on catnip and I've bought him interactive toys that don't contain plastic he might eat.

I have this one. It's not stainless steel, but it's durable as all hell and it keeps my fuzzy trash gremlins from eating garbage. I've gone through a lot of cheaper trash cans, but I anticipate having this one for many years.

I just use a regular trash can with a lid. I chose the 11-gallon (well, 10.6) because 13-gallon kitchen trash bags still fit in it just fine, but if a 13-gallon one is full of wet diapers, I have trouble carrying it, but I definitely wanted something larger than a 7-gallon bathroom trash can. Honestly, I don't notice much difference between the trash can and the 13-gallon one in our kitchen.

I also keep my bedroom window open, weather permitting, and spray Febreeze near the trash can if I notice an odor, even if I'm only noticing the odor when I open the trash can to dispose of a freshly removed diaper. In the warmer months, when odors seem to be exacerbated, I also put the wet diapers in super small trash bags and tie them closed. The bags aren't really large enough for a diaper I've been wearing 8 hours, but with the diaper rolled up, and the more open end facing inside the bag, they do well enough. I almost never notice an odor and I definitely was when I was just keeping them in a trash bag that was twisted close.

That said, I'm urinary incontinent and only using diapers for urinating in them. If you're using your diaper for more than that, what I'm doing may not be enough for you.

Easy solution to trash digging is to simply get a locking trashcan or put the trashcan in a place the dog cannot access.

From the way the dog acts it sounds like he isn't getting nearly enough exercise and or mental stimulation. Just because you have a big yard doesn't mean you don't have to exercise your dog. Especially if you just let him out and expect him to "play with himself". I have a fairly nice sized fully fenced yard and my GSD still gets 3 walks a day plus interactive playtime with me about once a day.

If your dog isn't interested in tug, fetch or frisbee, then the next step would be to run your dog. If you aren't in the best physical shape then what you can do is buy a cheap bike and purchase a Walky, run him for even just 20-30 minutes hard and I guarantee you his unruly behavior will decrease. I will note though, since he's a large breed dog I would wait at least until he's 12-15 months old to start doing this, as you can damage his joints by exercising him too hard before his joints have fused. Also get a kong, you can keep him occupied for at least 45min-1hr by putting peanut butter in it, freezing it, and then giving it to him.

I'd also recommend crate training him so that if you don't want him around guests you can crate him and you know he's safe. You can also crate him when nobody is home to guarantee your property and your dog's safety. Another thing you can do is buy a tie out and put it in the middle of the yard so he can't smash and paw on the door.

I'd definitely second getting a trainer to help you with his behavior in general though, it sounds like you aren't communicating with him in a way that clicks with him (remember, every individual will respond differently to different training methods), a seasoned trainer with lots of experience will probably be able to teach how to
communicate with him in a way that let's you communicate what you want him to do.

Lastly, you need to be patient with him, the Akita is a breed known for being very stubborn and hard to train, so you have to remember to manage your expectations. Just be consistent with what the trainer tells you to do and you will see results.

Got married in 2015 and we was in the same boat as you... Both of us are from large ethnic families who wanted to give physical gifts (because they're well intentioned and wanted to pay it forward - a lot of them were newly arrived in the US without a lot of money, and sometimes not a lot of family and married pretty young - so gifts they got for their marriage were actually very much needed). Both my partner and I already had functioning apartments (separately), then when we moved in while we were engaged, realized we had about 2 of everything and had to narrow that down. Thankfully, we are pretty minimal people - him by nature, me by intention. But especially after having to sort through both of our belonging to weed out duplicates, we really felt like we did not need anything else.

We ended up taking a two pronged appraoch: 1) Upgrading things we had, and used, but that were not all that nice to begin with and 2) Items that would help us achieve the goals that we had laid out for our relationship as a married couple.

A few things we asked for that have seen a lot of use:

1. Vitamix - I thought this was going to be a huge waste of money, but my partner really wanted it and my aunt really wanted to give it to us (because she loves hers). This thing has gotten used daily (and sometimes multiple times a day). We have been low-carb-ish for the last two years and the Vitamix has been awesome for this kind of cooking. Can't say enough great things about it and I have no doubt this thing is going to last decades.
   
   
2. Really great Japanese knives - my cousin is a chef recommended this pearing knife and this 8.5" knife. Not only are they super easy to handle (as opposed to German Wostoff knives - a commonly requested wedding gift, which IMHO are way too large to efficently or precisely manuver), but they are gorgeous knives that are nicely balanced and really feel great in your hand. We replaced an entire block of cheap-o knives with these two knives alone.
   
   
3. Religious & ethnic items for holidays - There are a few holidays we celebrate where specific items are part of the tradition. For example, for Christmas, our families always have nativity sets, so we registered for that. For Easter, there are special cultural items that are used - and someone made us that. You can ask your ethnic families to get you these things (which were actually some of the most touching gifts because they were either made by hand or purchased overseas).
   
   
4. Plates, silverware, glasses and servingware to host 40 people - This is NOT "minimalist" for pretty much anyone, but it made sense for us. We both have large families. The elders of the families have been strongly hinting at having us take over the "big holidays" that they have been hosting. Additionally, we live in a neighborhood that is the spot for 4th of July parties, and we host an annual blowout day-before-Thanksgiving party. When we were making our registry, we made a list of everyone who would be on the invite for these parties and were hitting the 35-40 person range. So we have 40 place settings - we keep 32 of them in a separate set of cabinets in the basement, and 5-6 times a year, bring them out so that everyone can eat together using real plates and silverware. It's not minimalist, but it's intentional in that we specifically have choosen to stay in the same city as our families so we can do these types of things.
   
   I guess my overall advice would be to make a list of goals you want to achieve for your life together, and then try to ask for items that either help you achieve those goals, or enhance those experiences.
   
   A few examples:
   
   

• If a goal for your married life together is to be environmentally sustainable, think about registering for a compost bin, a fancy SimpleHuman garbage/recyling can or a Berkey Water Filter
  
  
• If you want to pursue a healthy lifestyle together and cook homemade meals - you can upgrade your pots and pans (love my All Clad pots and my Le Creuset pan).
  
  Does anyone NEED this stuff? No, of course not. But when you're lucky enough to already have all your basic needs met in life, wedding registries provide are a nice opportunity to upgrade things that were aquired at an earlier time in your time in your life, not for their enduring quality, but rather their low cost/ ease of procurement. We got these and none of our dogs or fosters have gotten into them yet. One was knocked over once but they didn't get into it.

Best thing to do in these situations if she has access to items like the trash when you are not around is prevention - get a high quality, sturdy, LOCKING trash can (Example) or remove it from her access (put it in the garage, in a different room with a closed door, use gates, or put it in a cabinet). You can also make a habit of emptying the trash when you leave every day (if it is a problem of them getting into it when you leave for work - but it sounds like this was more of a 'we are home and she snuck off and got into the garbage' scenario).

Throwing away harmful trash directly in the curbside bin is a good idea and keep working on 'leave it' and redirection. Unfortunately, she now knows she CAN get into the trash if no one is looking and there are awesome things in there, so it may be more prudent just to remove access all together.

Use a combination of 'leave it' and preventing the behavior from being reinforcing (the trash is always empty or locked so she can never get any 'treats'/rewards from it) will should eventually cause the behavior to extinguish, but it only takes one time for her to figure out how to open the trash for it to be wildly reinforcing again.

Try a covered metal trash can like this; it's too heavy to knock over for most dogs, and even when they do, the trash stays closed inside. My dog used to constantly get into trash; this was my solution.

We use a SimpleHuman trashcan that seems to work for us. It sits between our kitchen counter and our fridge, but I don't think it would be toppled. I know our littler dog won't get into it no matter how good it smells.

We have a Beagle and Sheltie. The Beagle is more interested in the trash than his brother Sheltie.

This (non affiliate link) is the general style that we have. I'm not sure that ours was this expensive when we got it a few years ago. It may not be the exact size. We use 13 gallon bags in it. Very convenient to just step on the pedal and the lid opens up. There's a plastic liner that you pull out and put the bag in.

First of all, I want to say I'm sorry you're dealing with this. This must be so frustrating and hard for you & your family. I do think there are times when a dog needs to be rehomed, and I wouldn't judge you for doing that if you & your family decide that's best for everyone. Biting people is unacceptable behavior, especially with little kids around.

That said, there are two things that come to mind as ideas for you. When our dogs started getting into the trash, we bought a locking trash can like this one for the kitchen, and kept the doors to other rooms with trash cans shut. Immediate improvement there.

Without seeing how you interact with your dog, it's hard to tell what's going on in terms of discipline, but I'm not sure "ignore her behavior & not scold" is a good solution. Have you brought in a dog trainer for an in-home consultation? Classes are one thing, but I wonder if having a trainer observe you guys might give you some more insight in what's going on.

I used .5 inch 19 gauge hardware cloth on my entire run. Original concern was protection from larger predators but had to make some adjustments once rats started eating my feed.

• Seal gaps, cracks, holes in your wire. If you can put your thumb into the opening rat/mouse can squeeze into it.
  
• Use strips of aluminum to prevent rats from going above/under doorways
  
• Until you can get the rat problem under control remove the feeder at night or restrict access to it by placing it in a small metal container
  
• It took 4 blocks of just one bite to get rid of the rats.

We have two dogs that used to rip into the garbage all the time. This one has teeth marks on the lid and they haven't been able to get it open in going on two years.

Dogs are natural scavengers, and if you have an open-trash can sitting out, he is going to find opportunities to get into it. Smacking him for undesired behavior is not an effective method of training and will ultimately do more harm than good.

I keep my bathroom doors closed to keep the dogs out of the trash in there, and in the kitchen I use one of these. It is not expensive and works well.

I found a trash can in the kitchen with a lid can help reduce odors a lot. I used one like this. Large enough that you don't have to take the trash out all the time. Small enough that the trash doesn't start stinking. And a lid to keep the odors down.

Well, congratulations on your new apartment! I would suggest being conscious of turning off lights. Electric bills can get pretty outrageous. Also, don't use your AC when it is under 90 degrees out, keep it at 78 when you're at home and 86 when you leave on hot days. Wash the dishes you after you use them! The can pile up quickly. At the very least rinse them off and stack them on the side of the sink to wash later. Don't let more than 10 accumulate. Keeping your house clean is simple. Put in little effort upfront rather than max effort later. Pick up that loose paper before 10 others follow suit. Put your clothes in the hamper, not on the bathroom floor. It's not hard or complicated. I promise.

Kitchen: This is the one we've had for 9 years. It's awesome because the liner drops in, and has this little hole in the back to tuck extra bag in. That was the feature my husband used to talk me into buying one. Because I thought it was stupid expensive, and would be annoying to buy special bags.

We got one with a locking lid. It's a Simple Human trash can that my mom got us because we'd rather complain than spend $50 on a trash can and she'd rather spend the money than listen to us complain.

We bought this locking bin based on the reviews and customer photos of it being totally knocked over but still locked. We have a cheaper locking bin for our recycling and I can tell the locking mechanism is much tighter and more secure on this one (it takes 2 hands to open it).

Also I put the trash bag on the recycle side and use it for trash as I produce more recycling than trash and I take the trash out more often this was so there is less smell.

Since you’re a beginner I suggest you focus more on just learning how to grill and stick with Kingsford blue to remove one of the variables.

Once you have developed some comfort and skill then it may be time to try some other fuel. My suggestion is to try whatever brands/types you have available in your area and find what works best for YOU.

The only downside to Kingsford blue bags is that it creates a lot of ash when compared to lump. Not really a big deal tho. I suggest you buy one of those small galvanized buckets with a lid to empty your ash into. They are fireproof. Every year you read about someoine that was sure the ash from their grill was extinguished so they dump it into their normal trash can and burn down their garage. Don’t be that person.

When it comes to consistency Kingsford wins hands down. When it comes to price Kingsford blue bags wins - especially if you load up on the upcoming sales.

Lump varies widely from brand to brand and even from bag to bag within a brand. Which lump is best is like arguing religion or politics - opinions and passions can run high.

In my Weber kettle and WSM I tend to use Kingsford Blue. I don’t really think the other more expensive Kingsford types are really worth the extra $$.

In my kamados and other grills I tend to use lump and I generally have a few brands on hand - Royal Oak, Kamado Joe, Rockwood.

We bought metal trash cans (looks like this but bought them from local feed store or Lowe's or something)

Unfortunately the only other place I can put the trashcan would be in the water-heater room (the white door on the left). I could get a thinner trashcan like this and put in in the corner by the entryway, that way it will take less space.

I have a much larger, better quality version of this and though it was expensive, it's awesome. NO SMELLS, no touching, it's great.

my problem when i was trying to find one of these is that the cans are always really small. I found this one, 21 gallons.

I did 1 "permanent" heavy duty bag that is taped into the can, and then I change the other bag (this keeps the can itself clean in case of breakage)

Honestly, I think a step-on opening trash can would be your best solution. I wrestled with inside cabinet can solutions for years and was never happy.

I just recently got one of these cans and damn if it isn't the best trash can I've owned. It's a bit expensive, but I'm going to guess from your kitchen photos that it won't break the bank.

I tried a couple different "hands free" cans wher eyou wave your hand over a sensor to open...that was a mistake.

Maybe something like this would do? The metal "garbage can" type containers come in different sizes.

I have a similar one, same brand, as seen here and it's held up well to a very determined dog.

Two minor downsides: since the top of the liner bags have to pull down over the outside of the bin, they are practically begging (ha) to be pulled on and torn up. The lid fits snugly enough that the trash stays inside, but the liners get partially tugged out and mysterious shreds of white plastic appear all over the house.

The other downside is that since the bin I have is plastic vs stainless steel, that same determined dog may chew on the corners in a fruitless attempt to destroy the can in its entirety. The plastic is thick enough that I'm not worried about it being shredded or even warped, but it can be a little unsightly to have tooth marks all over the lid.

Mine has lasted 5 years, is still going strong, and I wish I got it 10 years ago. The trash can, that is. The dog is pushing 15 and still makes an effort to go dumpster diving on a regular basis.

This is what I use and it does keep the kibble pretty fresh.

Not sure if it holds 30 lbs or not, but it does hold a lot.

Without a lid, you have three options:

1. let them burn out.
   
2. douse with something (like water)
   
3. move the coals to an air tight container.
   
   
   I wouldn’t put baking soda, powder, or sand anywhere near the grill. Just a mess for cleaning up later. If you’re not willing to let it burn out, I’d buy a small metal trash can with a lid and move the coals into that then put the lid on.

I have a Simple Human with a locking lid and a foot pedal that would make a good CD bin. The Planet Wise liner we use would def fit it. We use it for our actual trash, I love it. We just have a generic white trash bin for our diapers, it works fine.

My friend has one and I've only seen it in action when he has a bunch of people over, but it's usually randomly opening when people walk by, or not opening when you want it to. Plus, it takes like a second to open, so you have to stand there and wait, which isn't cool if you're chopping a bunch of stuff and need to keep throwing it in.

We're considering it because our other recycling center thing is getting to be too small and cumbersome. It's a neat trash can/recycling can. I just hate, hate that she bought it and now makes me question if we should get it. With her setup, she could have gotten a bigger recycling bin instead of the combined one. We have less open room and that's the dual one makes sense for us under our kitchen island. She could have been a massive recycler and gotten a much bigger one and then a regular trash can.
