Well, everything except the crochet hooks seems good. Crochet is a completely different animal than knitting, though.

This would be a better notions kit (that's crafty speak for accessory tools). Though, it is less important to have these unless she has decided to continue with knitting beyond the basics.

Really all she needs at first is a pair of knitting needles and a ball of some yarn for her to practice with. But don't get them confused with crochet hooks. Like I said, it's a whole different animal.

My mom made me buy a Knit kit when I first started knitting. I already had all the separate components, except the crochet hook, but bought it because she recommended it. I don't move my knitting bag without this little thing! It has everything I want in it and is so much easier to keep track of. I tell all new knitters about it!

I bring a knit kit, which includes folding scissors. It's TSA approved, and I haven't had an issue with the kit or any of its elements being confiscated. It includes a tape measure, row counter, and stitch markers as well. You'll find better quality knit kits at your LYS (local yarn store) than the ones sold on Amazon.

I know exactly what you mean, I used to have one of those corking dolls (similar to this) when I was little too. The tool I used for that was slightly different looking but I could definitely see this how this would be used for corking. Thanks!!

Thank you! I'm not sure how helpful this will be, it's the February blanket in this book.

For your MIL:

And maybe the supplies to do so?

Or for both MIL and FIL see if there is a cooking class like Hipcooks and get them a class to learn to make sushi! Then she cooks he gets sushi and you are giving them an expierence!

My husband bought me the [Addi Click Interchangable Needles Set] (http://www.amazon.com/Addi-Click-Interchangeable-Needle-Set/dp/B0054D9U2C) and I really love them. They come in a little leather case, so it is easy to take them with me. The mechanism to change them in and out is also very good. If she knits a lot, I'm sure she will be excited. I bet she uses both wood and metal, so get her what you think is best and if she is particular, just exchange them.

Are you looking at the addi click turbo or the addi click lace tip? If the regular turbo (not lace) I have a set I'll sell you for 50% off Amazon price - I never use them (I use my lace tips more). The basics are more blunt than the lace tips, but they're very good for beginners. And I'd rather they go to someone excited about knitting rather than sitting in my stash unused.

I've had good luck so far with my Boye's Needlemaster Artisan Tools, which are often available at craft stores and you can use a 40 or 50 percent off coupon to buy.

I found my set at a discount store for $30.

Thanks for responding! Now that you mention it that way, I THINK she did say something about bamboo. So, if you have another minute, is this just kind of a generally nice set of bamboo needles?

Here is a link to the interchangeable Addi circulars set. Personally, I love them and their feel. Also, it's useful to be able to keep the project on the cord while changing the needles for some patterns.

I know you're looking for inexpensive ones, but I really like the ones made specifically for knitting with 1" grids printed on them. My current project is a blanket assembled from 9 identical squares, so exact blocking has been crucial. I've steamed and wet blocked with no color bleed problems. They're also thicker than most other mats, so you can put a good amount of stretch on your knitting without the mat bending. Unfortunately, the ones I have are currently out of stock, but there are similar ones out there.

If you don't think you'd benefit from the grid and thicker mat, this one is cheaper and has a lot of good reviews from knitters.

I asked for a set of pom pom makers, a yarn winder, a nice-looking yarn tote, a set of blocking mats, and some awesome crochet books!
