Convoy

Convoy makes a few types of C8s.

  • XM-L2 C8s: These have the floodiest beams. They come with the 3/5 mode group UI. Available in black and grey.
  • XP-L HI C8s: These have the throwiest beams. The black version has the old 3/5 mode group firmware, while the clear version has ToyKeepers Biscotti UI.

    Astrolux

Astrolux's C8 is the newest on the market. It has the BLF A6 driver with ToyKeeper's Bistro firmware. It's FET driven, so it can get really bright, but the brightness depends on the battery voltage. The output drops off a lot sooner than Convoy's C8s.

    ThorFire

The C8S is the most typical. It has 5 modes and a linear driver like Convoy's C8s. The throw is comparable to Convoy's XM-L2 C8s as well.

    Sofirn

The C8F uses a modified C8 body with a triple emitter setup. It has a much floodier beam than other C8s. They also make the C8A, an XP-L2 C8. This one appears to be FET driven as well. It should have a slightly wider beam than an XP-L HI C8, but it will likely throw further than Convoy's due to the amount of light being put out.

    Kaidomain

Kaidomain makes all sorts of C8s from C8s with colored emitters to C8s with XHP50.2s and boost drivers. They all use a pill system, unlike other C8s by other companies.

A couple bucks over your budget, but pretty badass - Streamlight Sidewinder.

Couple of things. Try going for the Darkroom version of that tent; you’ll sleep in longer (yes, really).

I have a 6p Coleman; good tent for car camping. Stakes come with the tent but are crap. Get some
heavy duty stakes and bring a small hammer to drive them into the ground.

A cheap tent dome light can be helpful. Such as (this.)[https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DXJG4SX?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share]

Similarly, headlamps (and extra batteries) for everyone.

Take a hard look at your sleeping system, which includes your mattress/pad, sleeping bag, and pillow. Make sure you know the temp range you’re sleeping in and choose your bag accordingly. Know that if it’s and EN rated bag, the temp range is pretty reliable, but 1) pay mind to the comfort rating, not the lowest limit rating; and 2) know that the ratings are calculated based upon you wearing a baselayer, usually a lightweight wool upper and lower.

You’ll keep a little more warmth in the bag if you have an insulated mattress/pad. But it’s not necessary; feel free to get a mattress that is comfortable to you (don’t forget a battery operated pump).

Pillows: either bring a few from home and put them in a waterproof cover (like the ones used for bed accidents), or get a few inflatable ones.

Bring a beanie if it’s going to be cold out at night.

Maybe the UltraTac K18

That or one of the S1 Batons would be a great fit.

No pictures, but I hung a collapsible light like this that I just fold up into the tent. It’s nice, because I never have to remember them, and if they’re dead, I throw them out in the sunlight for a while and they charge quickly!

I’ve also heard of people attaching LED strips to one of the internal frame bars with a couple of batteries. Seems fancy.

This is a little AAA light, use a 10440 battery and it gets bright quick. Plus a sweet switch on the side. Mine rides around on my keys, mucho love for it

A 16-piece dinnerware set like this Corelle one. It gets you two sizes of plates, a set of bowls, and cups for 4. I like the glass/stoneware stuff because it's easier to clean than plastic, it's microwave- and dishwasher-safe, and you don't end up with cuts through it. I've got a set that's lasted 15+ years with only some faded paint. Oh, and silverware; I'd say 6 or 8 sets.

Bath mats. Not the ones that slip around the toilet; the little welcome mat to keep you from falling on your ass when you step out of the shower. And don't forget to put it through the wash on a regular basis.

9 Volt Batteries. Because who knows when the last time the smoke detector batteries were changed. Unless where you are moving has built-in detectors.

A battery-powered lantern. I like these better than a regular flashlight, but you'll want at least one of those, too.

A tool kit. Nothing too fancy, but it should at least have both types of screwdriver, a claw hammer, a tape measure, an adjustable wrench, WD40, twine, and duct tape. A multimeter can be nice in certain situations, but if you don't know what you'd use it for, don't bother. Since I assume you're going to be renting -- even if you're as hopelessly unhandy as I am -- having this stuff on hand can usually keep things together until you can convince the maintenance guy to show up.

Here is a link to the Amazon page. I don’t think it’s an affiliate link, at least.

I’m pretty sure it’s a 29E. I can see the faintest hints of that through the wrap.

Yeah i think my first night ill be on edge just because im alone, not because im outdoors. Im very comfortable outdoors. Ive camped a lot, its just been a while. But even being my size, im kinda nervous to be hundreds of miles from home by myself so i think that may keep me up if i think about it too much.

Im going to be buying a few LED lanterns for the site. Should i get a flashlight for walking places or is this going to be too bright to other campers if im walking somewhere at night?

u/Hubbell34 · 1 pointr/flashlight

Thank you for doing this!

I got a set of two of these c8’s and destroyed one of the emitters trying to dedome it. I dedomed the other one with gasoline but am not happy with the tint. They have 20mm MCPCBs and I was wondering what would be involved in swapping them to these or these. I have basic soldering skills but anything more involved might be a challenge.

Edit:formatting

Quick post for the Australians out there - you’ll need to pick something from this list. Double check with xe.com for conversion rates if needed.

My choice though: Nitecore MT21C. As mentioned, I'll pick up the slack on shipping costs if successful.

Parametrek rocks :D

I love looking through everyone else's submissions and seeing the spiffy lights that are available... people have picked out some interesting gems from the thousands of Amazon listings.

If I win, I'd love to have this lantern light. I'm pretty well set for flashlights, but I don't have anything that's great for area lighting and this seems like it would be useful to have around.

A collapsible clover style camping tent lantern. Hidden hanging hook design, clover-shaped, using environmentally friendly solar energy. You can use it as a flashlight when it is compressed or as a regular lantern as it is expanded.

Also found this Led camping lantern on big sale - only $12.99 now. Shorter than iPhone 6 plus, it can be folded down completely to take the least space in your backpack. Reviews look quiet good so far.

u/MixedWithFruit · 1 pointr/flashlight

My partner's grandparents had a flashlight like this, gave it to me so fix it and I swapped the Incan for an led item I had which improved it a bit.
I purchased them this and it is honestly a decent item.

The sidelight is a nice neutral white.

I'll jump in.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Y82IJ8G This one is on sale for only a few dollars more as an alternative

Thanks for all this info, some good insights there. I am leaning towards a modular system right now. This is the best example I can find that currently exist https://www.amazon.com/Coleman-Quad-LED-Lantern/dp/B00E09BERU, but I would like there to be more variance in the size of the removable lights (i.e. one could be used as a flashlight, one as a headlamp).

u/czarter · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

i bought this particular one, three years ago:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00294LCLQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I'm sure they're all quality. You'll need to buy the headband attachment to make it a headlamp:

I'm a gear snob, and this is my favorite piece of gear i own.

The one and only time I went camping I saw a bear, so my initial reaction is bear spray...

But, a first aid kit, flashlight (the latern-looking ones like these are pretty neat), bug spray, blowup mattress, camp stove, blankets.
