I feel like I'm posting about USB too much here, but people keep asking because it's easy to get confused about it. I just copied the table I made a while ago in a comment and added FAQs and notes for outside the US.

I hope this answers what people are really looking for better than the other threads.

Do you have some specific need I didn't answer? Have a USB-C charger you're curious about that isn't listed? Ask in a comment. Just keep in mind that (other than the iPad one) USB-A chargers won't give you good speeds. This includes the chargers bundled with even the most recent phones by Samsung, Apple, Sony, LG, and HTC.

I'll use this comment to note some USB-C chargers I'm aware of but don't recommend:

---------

Charging speeds vary

These chargers can give the Switch great speeds sometimes, but usually they're closer to just "okay". It seems to be random every time you plug it in. If the Switch is completely turned off (not just in sleep) when you plug it in, you'll almost always get those "great" speeds for as long as you keep it plugged in even after turning the Switch back on and playing. This happens because Nintendo's implementation of USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is very buggy. They're a hassle to use right for now, so I don't recommend them, especially since there are better alternatives now.

Charger|Price (USD)|Link|Notes
--|--|--|--
Anker PowerPort+ 5|$39.99|Amazon|Use the USB-C port. It also offers 4 USB-A ports. No USB cables included.
RAVPower 26800mAh USB-PD battery|$79.99|Amazon|
UGREEN 30W USB-PD charger|$17.99|Amazon|No cable included.

----------

Safety issues

These don't damage the Switch, but they can damage other USB-C cables and devices, especially if you plug them in to something that doesn't make sense, like another charger. If you know how to use them right and you're careful, you won't damage anything, but why risk it? Get something else.

Charger|Link|Notes
--|--|--
CHOETECH USB C 15W charger|Amazon|
Anker PowerPort+ 1 USB-C QC3.0|Amazon|Any USB-C port that offers QC3.0 has known issues

----------

Great but expensive

If you have a USB-C laptop, feel free to get one of these, but otherwise don't bother. Plenty of chargers in my OP work just as well with Switch and are much cheaper.

Charger|Price (USD)|Link|Notes
--|--|--|--
Google 60W USB-C charger|$59.99|Google|Bundled with Chromebook Pixel 2, great for laptops, very long 12ft cable
Apple 61W USB-C charger|$69|Amazon, Apple|Bundled with 2016 13" MacBook Pro, no cable included when bought on its own. The 15-inch model's 87W charger is probably great too.
Apple 29W USB-C charger|$49|Amazon, Apple|Bundled with non-Pro MacBooks, no cable included when bought on its own. Poor speeds with most other non-Apple devices.
Innergie 45W USB-C charger|$59.99|Amazon|Works with the dock, great with laptops and phones too.

---------

Unconfirmed speeds (and expensive)

These chargers are also too expensive to recommend. They probably work great, but I haven't seen any reports of people actually trying any of them. They all probably work with the dock too. If anybody has one of these, please tell me if it works with the dock.

If you're looking for budget alternatives to these bags, AmazonBasics offers a pretty good bag meant for camera accessories, but works the same!

I own a different model of the AmazonBasics camera bag that is $10 more but has an additional compartment for a laptop or 9-pocket binder. Love the thing. Quality of the smaller dividers is a little suspect, but otherwise seems high quality and if the small dividers are a problem you can substitute the Pirate Lab ones (the longer Pirate Lab dividers will not fit, since my bag is a little smaller).

Serious comment, not intended as an asshole jab or a personal attack:

If you are so scared of hurting your most critical and essential tool of your profession then you have chosen the wrong tool.

Put a T470p in there and stop worrying about it.

I used to have MAJOR overheating problems with the crappiest of games on my Dell Inspiron, this thing is freaking amazing and cools my laptop very very well.

Edit: I've used several other cooling pads, and I highly recommend this one. I have no had any problems since the buy, and the bottom of my laptop has always stayed cool. Although the top left side has stayed hot during times of high useage, but that isn't really something you can stop. (as far as I know)

I want to start by saying I’m not affiliated with Amazon, nor are any of the links affiliate links. I’m just a guy that looks for good bargains and wants to share what I found.

Background:

I live in Austria and I’ve been flying micros, the TinyHawk, Mobula7, M80, and a custom 65mm since the beginning of the year in my apartment. Austria has super strict laws regarding UAV’s and you need an expensive license to fly anything larger than 250 grams. Under 250g’s, you’re free to fly as you please as long as you’re not flying around a populated area. I decided to go with micros for the time being to keep myself under the radar and get my flight time in before I eventually move back to the states in a couple years.

I’m generally a price conscious person and I’ll spend a lot of time looking for good deals, usually through Banggood. I’ll stuff something in my wishlist and wait for it to go on sale, the transmitter I got for 85€, goggles for 40€ etc. So, when I started looking for a backpack to become a bit more portable and fly away from my apartment, I got a bit of sticker shock when I saw the prices on “quad bags”. A buddy of mine suggested the bag he has, the Lowepro Quadguard BP X2, but at 110€ it would be the most expensive piece of my FPV equipment, additionally I needed something that would be able to hold my 15.6” laptop that I need for school, which the BP X2 does not have the space for. I looked at the other big budget backpack that is recommended around Reddit, which is the Realacc Backpack, but again, no space for a laptop.

After digging and digging, I decided the best way to go would be to get a camera bag that has a laptop sleeve. Enter the AmazonBasics DSLR and Laptop Backpack. I want to take a moment to say that there are 3 AmazonBasics bags that have the same description, only their dimensions are different, I’ll link the backpacks at the end. Fortunately, I decided on the backpack a few days before Prime Day and was able to pick it up for 27€. At the time of this writing, it is not on sale and is listed at 34€. I got it in and opened it up and immediately spent the next hour trying to arrange the padded walls to fit everything that I wanted to stuff inside. The timing was perfect because I would be going back to the US for a 3-week trip to visit family in 5 different states and I could run a nice torture test on it.

Items I brought in the bag for the 3 week trip:

15.6" Laptop, 3” Spare Props, QX7 Transmitter, EV800, Diatone R349, Mobula7, TinyHawk, Sunglasses w/ Case, Lipo bag with 16 1s batteries and 2 4s batteries, charger for EV800, 65mm Spare Props, Lipo charger, spare parts, mouse, magazine, school book, 7" tablet, charging wires for tablet and laptop plus adapters, pens, and screwdrivers.

Review:

Pros:

  • Price! 27€
  • The size was just about perfect. I say just about perfect with two caveats that are not enough to make them cons. I would have liked the top of the backpack to not taper in. The base of the bag is deeper than the top of the bag by a few centimeters. Similarly, the top of the bag also curves in on the sides a bit. Not enough to take away points, but enough that it is noticeable.
  • Zipper feel. It’s a funny item to include, but the zippers feel really good, not overly robust, but incredibly smooth.
  • Large laptop sleeve, good for up to a 17” laptop.
  • Straps felt secure, additional straps for across the chest and waist are provided to help distribute weight. I found that I didn’t need the waist strap and there is no way to remove it without cutting them out, I was usually able to fold them over themselves to keep them out of the way, but I would have preferred to not have them. I did use the chest strap, however.
  • Adjustable interior pads. These were really convenient; they gave a lot of options for configurability. I ended up not using the two longest pads though.
  • Front pocket held a surprising number of items.
  • The bag stood upright on its own with it fully loaded.
  • Fit as a carry-on underneath the seat of every plane I was on, including some small regional jets! (some planes were tighter than others)
  • Did I mention the price??

    Cons:

  • Side pockets are fixed with a Velcro cover. This may not be a con to some people, but I would have rather had a mesh pocket with elastic. That would be much more versatile for my usage, that being said, I was able to stuff my laptop charger into the two pouches. (Main cable in one, and the brick in the other. My brick is pretty small, only 80cm or so YMMV).
  • No straps on the outside of the front of the backpack to strap a larger quad. You could buy one of those adapters from ebay.
  • It does have a feeling of being a little cheap, in my travels I didn’t have any fraying, but other reviews I read have reported fraying and seams unraveling after only a few months. I was generally quite mindful of the bag and didn’t throw it around too much.

    Overall:

You can’t beat it for the price. If you’re a budget conscious flyer like me, and lets face it if you stuck around to read all of this than you are, it’s a no brainer just go and buy it.

I've had this backpack (wenger) for probably 10 years, using it a minimum of 5 days a week. Highly recommend. Happy to see it doesn't seem like they've changed a thing.

u/shvr · 5 pointsr/motorcycles

No, just a regular backpack. Synergy by Swissgear.

Though I do have a couple straps that I use to secure the pack to rear seat. Basically I take the seat off, put the backpack on the seat like it's wearing it, put the seat back on the bike, then strap the pack down so it doesn't wiggle around. Putting the pack on the seat so it's wearing it keeps the packs shoulder straps locked underneath the seat, so if for some reason the extra straps I have fail or come loose the pack won't fall off until the rear seat is removed. Works pretty well for me.

u/Branflakes222 · 5 pointsr/xboxone

Charging/wired controllers will suck though... I'm holding out for a stand that charges controllers so I'm not THAT bugged by it.

u/Modna · 5 pointsr/hardware

Things like this can work very well. I used to use a cooling pad when I gamed on my laptop and it made a world of difference.

u/gummibear049 · 5 pointsr/lowendgaming

Make sure you dust/clean the air vents.

Also the fan/heatsink that originally game on the laptop may not be able to handle the additional heat produced by the faster CPU.

You may want to try a laptop cooling pad or aftermarket fan attachment.

check for physical defect, test all your physical part.

check for the screen, make sure it have minimum light bleeding. check for the front camera, the back cam. check for the infrared cam.

check the keyboard and the trackpad if they are okay, the feel of it and how the trackpad scrollability.

check the pen, the 2 buttons on it if they work, check the pen pressure by written on the screen, check the screen by coloring it using the pen on any of the drawing software.

test your bluetooth (pen pairing should do the trick), check your wifi on both 2.4 and 5ghz.

check location if it detect you correctly, check the brightness of the screen (for dead pixel, light bleed and flickering).

test sound loudness.

---------------

with all that, okay now you can test on software

install coretemp to set active monitoring of cpu temperature.

install both anti virus and anti malware tools of your choice (im using both nod32 and malwarebytes), do not skip this, be it you are tech-wise or not, malware and virus can hide behind virtually any "normal" looking site, it can hide behind a normal looking ads or web page. common sense for computer that run on windows tell you to install despite many "tech savvy" folks tell you not to, because windows is a computer system that hackers want to steal and grab your data from and has the largest community in it compared to other OS. protect yourself.

install gfx tools that check your gfx capability, such as benchmark tool. this can tell you if your gfx is working within the good range.

update your generic intel iris driver to beta so you can switch off that irritating auto dimming function.

additional :

you can install intel cpu utility tool to mod the CPU speed, please read online for more info how to do, the benefit some says is that you can optimised the cpu usage and not heating up every time when you run any program. when the cpu heat up, the fan start, this will cost you some battery life to upkeep it.

alternatively, you can modify the hkey register (read online again for how to), to enable the power settings to allow you to configure cpu state. you can set it to 60% max when doing work etc to save power.

-------------------------------------------------

case wise, i would not advise any case but i would advise you to get skins. skin from decalgirl is good and easy to put on. the reason why no case is because any extra housing will cause your device to have dust scratches. dust will find its way into the case and it WILL scratch no matter how well protected you handle your device. it apply to any thing actually from phones to computers.

you do not need screen protector period.

the pen will have stain if you place it near any dark items. take note of that. it is also very prone to get scratch.

you would want to get a wireless mouse for this, check ebay for those built in battery cheap mouse at 2BGP. it work wonderfully.

I have the Y580, and I can't be happier. One of my parents has a DV6 and it suffers from constant overheating issues, especially when rendering or even surfing the web. The 660M graphics are actually benchmarked much higher than one would expect, and I can run Skyrim on High/Ultra with ENB mods and it runs around 55 FPS.

Build Quality: Good- The case feels sturdy, and the matte brushed metal finish is a nice addition, and wards off too many fingerprints. The keyboard has almost no flex, and the keys are a decent size that they really don't take much getting used to.

Trackpad- OK- The buttons are integrated, so it's easy to accidentally hit one when you first buy the laptop. You get used to this, however.

Speed- Good to Great- I have the 7200 RPM HDD, rather than the standard 5200 RPM. This makes a major difference. While the 5200 is still pretty fast, the 7200 blows it out of the water. The CPU is very fast for the price class, I'm getting it at 3.1 GHZ and up to 3.3 with some Turbo boosting.

Graphics- Exceptional- In this price range, the graphics capabilities really stand out. Most games can be run on high, and some even on Ultra, such as CS:GO and Skyrim. Sleeping Dogs runs on High, but not Ultra. Just the examples there. So you're question may be why choose this over the Dv6? Well the answer is very simple. It costs less, IMO it has better build quality, better graphics capabilities, it's slightly faster, and it regulates heat much better. If you look on the side you will see just how big and powerful the heat sink is.

To sum it up, yes, I recommend the Lenovo Y580 for the above reasons. Should you choose to go with the Dv6, however, I recommend you purchase a cooling pad like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-NotePal-Cooling-R9-NBC-4WAK-GP/dp/B002MU1ZRS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346777799&sr=8-1&keywords=cooling+pad

Good luck with whatever you choose!

I have a cooling pad (This one, works fairly well) but it does still get hot... Maybe I need to invest in a new one.

Though after doing some research, I found that it is a pretty common problem. I found a way to fix it from /r/TheSims, but I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks for the input!

Mach einfach um den Laptop so eine Hülle, schmeiß den zusammen mit dem Netzteil in irgendeinen beliebigen Rucksack und fertig. Laptop-Rucksäcke sind was für Dorks.

u/Kerrbob · 4 pointsr/mac

+1 to all the comments about reducing processing load where possible. Beyond that, if you don’t already have one I use a cooling pad. It is basically just a raised platform with fans under the laptop to move air across the bottom.

Don’t expect marvels, but I definitely notice a difference of a couple degrees.

This is what I use:
Cooler Master NotePal U3 PLUS - https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00ED3WMTC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_-Tu2AbAX92J9X

Although I don’t recommend this particular one; the angle is too sharp and without modification my laptop was sliding off. Something like it could help though.

Consider fan noise from the pad itself, angle, and if the laptop will have a small air gap between the fans for air flow.

This swiss army backpack has lasted all 3 years of my college career, a study abroad, several trips and vacations, and a bike tour through Europe. I always carry my laptop and usually some pretty heavy books at it has withstood the abuse quite well.

You can get it in 15" and 17" laptop compartment sizes. I highly recommend swiss army in general. You can find them at Best Buy or maybe Target if you don't want to order online.

I have the nyko charge base. So far so good (4 months). Comes with 2 batteries and is currently only $18 on Amazon. Automatically stops charging when batteries are at %100. I'm probably going to at least buy one more for my apartment.

u/impelus · 3 pointsr/GameDeals

You can pick up a third party dongle for like $6. I also suggest picking up a charging base to save on those batteries.

u/Bronze_Kneecap · 3 pointsr/DSLR

This is what I have and would reccomend. https://www.amazon.com/Case-Logic-SLRC-206-15-4-Inch-Backpack/dp/B002DW99H8 I'm not 100% sure if it would fit everything, but I would bet that it would. I keep my Canon 6D, Canon 24-70 2.8, Tamron 70-200 2.8, and Tokina 16-28 2.8 all in there with room to spare.

u/pzer0 · 3 pointsr/photography

I have this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DW99H8

Comparatively cheap, well built, tons of space. I can fit my 60d, about 5 lenses (primes and telephotos, it even fits my 300mm), 580ex, and my tripod straps to the side of the bag. I can also fit my Macbook and Wacom Bamboo in the back padded pocket. Really nice bag. The main thing I like about it is the sling system that allows you to quickly remove the camera, and you can even leave the lens attached.

u/n3gotiator · 3 pointsr/gaming

Realistically once the motherboard is replaced you should see a drop in temperatures, the most common reason for overheating is dust buildup. Second most common is degradation of the thermal paste (manufacturers routinely cut corners on quality thermal paste). If you had the skills required, you could always take the laptop apart and re-apply thermal paste.

Highest reviewed USB cooler pad on Amazon, can be an option to try as well:

$1000 Desktop = $2000 Laptop.

With roughly $1k USD you'll have plenty of budget for an awesome high-end gaming PC. With mini-ITX, you can even make a desktop that's fairly easy to carry around for Gaming Events, a desktop small enough to fit in a backpack and strap a monitor down to the same pack, or use another carrying option like a Roccat Tusko, or similar bags.

Once you have your money ready, head on over to /r/BuildAPCForMe, /r/CabalOfTheBuildsmiths, or /r/BuildAPC. The latter two subreddits expect you to show up with a build already planned out, and they can help you save money or get better parts. The first subreddit is great for anyone who doesn't know where to start picking hardware but still want to build their own system.

The choice is yours to make. You can actually make fairly small ITX desktop builds that are easy to tote around. Tiny ones like the Cooler Master Elite 110(10.3"x8.2"x11.1"). Or a case like the Corsair Graphite 380T even has a built-in handle. Though you still have to think about a screen and accessories but they make tote bags for those too. It still may be a bit much but there are choices.

Anywho's, you can check out Notebookcheck.net's review of BF1. That will give you a good idea of GPUs (both laptop and desktop) to think about.

edit

If you are interested in an ITX build, PCGamer's budget and mid-range builds are both ITX. They also have a "best of" guide to ITX cases.

u/talkstogoats · 3 pointsr/buildapc

I just bought a cooler master elite 130 for transporting around. Had to get a mitx motherboard and new processor as well, but I think it will be worth it. Its nice to know that if I want to go to a friends house I can just put it in a duffle bag along with clothes and be fine for the weekend. Might also want to look into getting one of these for easy monitor transportation.

I guess the con's to a mitx build could possibly be limited airflow and lack of ports on the motherboard.

I don't know why the cooler is at its current price (I got it for $30 when I bought it), but its a good cooler. So either wait or keep this in mind. I had this cooler for 3 years and still kicks butt. Absolutely no problems or issues with it, but with all products, your mileage will vary.

The laptops I used it for were a Lenovo 580 and a 2015 Razer Blade in case you were wondering.

u/CyberJeeves · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Hi Faith!

The Lenovo Y510p i7 version has that i7 + SLI GPU configuration you mentioned. It has a quad core 4700MQ, 8GB ram, 1TB HDD, GT 755M SLI GPU, 1920x1080 15.6" screen and Windows 8.1. It's certainly the best value in gaming laptops around your budget, and should be able to play all your games at high/ultra settings, according to this benchmark.

We highly recommend getting a cooler for this system, since it does tend to run hot. The Cooler Master X3 should work well with it. In terms of SSDs, if you need high capacity on a budget, the Samsung 840 EVO provides an excellent value. If you're looking for the best performance and reliability, the Samsung 840 PRO universally acclaimed as a very stable and fast SSD.

u/construktz · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I'd say if you want the best gaming laptop for the price range to get a Lenovo Y510p which has an i5-4200M, 6GB RAM, 1TB HDD + 8GB SSD cache, Dual Nvidia GT 755M Graphics cards on SLI, and a 15.6" 1920x1080 display.

It can compete with $1200+ gaming machines for considerably less. The only downside is limited battery life and it does run pretty hot with 2 graphics cards. Use the extra money left in your budget on a good cooling pad.

hey everyone, I'm going on a trip to Ireland in a couple weeks and decided it might be time to pick up a few things. for reference ive got a Canon T3i and the 2 kit lenses. (18-55, 75-300)

I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to get a wide angle lens and after looking it seems like canons 10-18 is a good choice, and they have that in a bundle that comes with the 50 f/1.8 as seen here, which seems like a good deal.

Adding two more lenses means my case is WAY too small and after reading through the megathread I found this amazon basics bag which seems more than large enough, non descript and at a very affordable price point.

so is that all good for the price? just looking for confirmation,

thanks.

For those looking for a budget-friendly store as much shit as possible backpack, I'd throw the AmazonBasics DSLR Backpack into the ring.

Pros:

  • Great price for the backpack ($40) USD.

  • Holds a 17" laptop without any issues.

  • Holds 2 camera bodies + their grips (Canon 7D Mark 2 + Canon XSi), in addition to 4 lenses - Tokina 11-16mm, EF-S IS USM 55-250mm 4-5.6, EF-S IS USM 15-55mm, Tamron 60mm DI 2 Macro with a ton of room leftover (I will be upgrading these shortly though and will revise then).

  • Side of it has a double-buckle hold for a tripod.

  • -Seems- to be rather durable so far.

  • Comes with a rain cover for the entire backpack it if I recall.

  • Enough room to store filters, extra batteries, chargers, a small hotshoe flash, etc., inside the compartments.

  • All compartments are adjustable (Velcro).

  • Outer pocket to store your cards/booklets/guides/etc.,

  • Lumbar/waist straps.

  • It's extremely low profile - most people would think it's just a backpack [assuming you don't have a tripod attached to it].

    Cons:

  • This is a sizeable backpack. Take a normal sized backpack, stuff it as full as possible... and this is still a little larger than that.

  • Lumbar support on this is bulky and can get in the way if you are trying to move around without it attached.

  • Accessing your cameras from within the bag is not quick at all - you had better have your camera out if you're looking to shoot fast!

  • Can get pretty heavy if you keep packing gear in it AND a hefty laptop (duh!).

  • Bottom of the bag is seemed relatively thin - in it's original setup (when first delivered) the camera is screen-down and butt-up against the bottom of the bag. Flip this set-up around as the Velcro allows you to do so and screen is then at the top of the bag and far less worry-some.

Overall, for the price I would buy this again in a heartbeat as a "travel" bag. This went with me on an airline and I didn't have any issues. As for a normal every-day carry around (1 camera + 1 or 2 lens) bag? Maybe not - this is a little too large for that.

Since the U2515H only has Displayport 1.2 any Displayport 1.4 hub would be useless.
You are in luck because the U2515H supports Daisy Chaining.

What you can do is buy a dual Displayport 1.2 Alt Mode adapter (example here)
and then connect two U2515H to it. For the third monitor you connect it to one of the Displayport Out ports of the two other monitors.

You could even connect all three monitors via Daisy Chaining, ergo no adapter required, just one USB-C to Displayport cable. However then the third monitor would only have a resolution of 2048x1152 @ 30 Hz. So for triple 1440p @ 60 Hz you need a adapter/hub.

I own the G3 with those exact specs, yes it is good but I recommend you upgrade to 16GB ram because 8GB is starting to become dated especially after I updated to Windows 1903 to use Xbox gamepass. I basically can't have a web browser with a single tab in the background because it throws off performance that much in games that use a lot of RAM like Monster Hunter World. The screen isn't really that good either it's 57% SRGB and for games with a lot of dark colors I'm forced to turning the in-game brightness all the way up which makes bright colors washed out and the dark ones just barely distinguishable. If you're up for it or can get someone else to do it I highly recommend you swap out the panel. This panel is pretty well recommended for Dell G3/5/7 laptop users because you can still use your brightness controls on it unlike other panels. It's much brighter and has a color accuracy of 100% SRGB and 89% Adobe RGB. I recommend you undervolt the CPU too it can get really hot in demanding games and easily go 90C+ and start thermal throttling. I undervolted mine to -0.160v and it drops the temperatures by at least 10C on full load so it doesn't thermal throttle anymore and power throttles a lot less.

https://www.amazon.com/Screen-Display-N156HHE-GA1-7RG-078US-Leopard/dp/B07CWSWX4Q/ref=pd_sbs_147_2/146-0225112-8059332?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07CWSWX4Q&pd_rd_r=631cf6dc-553d-46d9-8913-dace12633877&pd_rd_w=tii8k&pd_rd_wg=nrJ5S&pf_rd_p=52b7592c-2dc9-4ac6-84d4-4bda6360045e&pf_rd_r=4FTXQBZ6RB401XVS6HF8&psc=1&refRID=4FTXQBZ6RB401XVS6HF8

Also whatever you do stay away from Dell Power Manager control app. I tried using it to limit my battery charge to 90% so the battery would last longer and now the machine can't hold a charge at all or recognize my AC adapter. I've tried every method except bios and chipset update because the battery is at 0% now and won't let you do it at that percentage.

Personally I use this $15 soft case, its not as perfectly snug as I expected it to be - it has some additional space at the end and at the top (they do have a pocket up top so I put the cable in there, which fills up some space). With this, I usually dump my keyboard in the main section of my backpack. I don't carry more than 2 books around though. Feels safe to me.

It only comes with 1 set of arms, so I took the arms off another similar monitor stand and the top set of arms is my camera and the 4k monitor, then the second set of arms is only for my left monitor. The ultra wide is sitting on the desk, and the right 1080p monitor is on a desk mounted swivel arm stand that used to have just my 4k on it until I got the ultra wide and moved everything around. Ignore price and look a quantity and quality of reviews. This pad for example would be great. I have friends that use it and they don't really have any complaints. It's important to keep in mind that cooling pads aren't ever ever perfect, and if you feel like your laptop is getting too hot, close your application and give it a bit of a rest, maybe reduce settings for a while. I don't know what brand or model your laptop is, but some laptops run hotter than others. I hope it works out for you, a nice gaming laptop can be a great thing to have.

u/YorVeX · 2 pointsr/Twitch

First you need to find out whether the stutter comes from the network or from the CPU being a bottleneck.

Short version:

If you are using OBS Studio then after or during a stream (after the stream ran for at least half an hour) go to View -> Stats and check Dropped Frames (Network) versus Frames missed due to rendering lag and Skipped frames due to encoding lag.

If it's not network then your CPU is still not powerful enough for the encoding preset you have chosen.

Long version:

Since I think it's more likely that CPU is your problem I am mainly focusing on CPU here.

CPU load of 50/60% would be fine - from my personal experience problems start if you touch the 75-80% range. But I am talking about peaks here, not average. If you constantly monitor CPU usage of your laptop you will notice that during relatively static scenes (e.g. a setup or AFK screen if it is not heavily animated or the main menu of a game) or even a full face cam scene the CPU load will be low.

During a game with some action you might be staying at a 50-60% range but there will always be situations with peaks where suddenly the encoder has a lot more to do. If you only look at average CPU usage you will miss those situations. Even if you constantly look at the task manager you might still miss this very short peak of 90 or 100% CPU usage, because the task manager also only shows the average of the last second or so. If the peak is shorter you won't see it because it might be averaged down to 70% usage while still making you drop frames.

Now you could look at other tools that measure CPU usage more precise but I don't think that is necessary because with the stream stats you already have your answer.

As long as you can rule out a network/bandwidth issue from the stream stats you can always 100% be sure that it's still your CPU being the bottleneck if you are dropping frames due to rendering/encoding lag, even if what you see in the task manager doesn't indicate that the CPU is overloaded.

Conclusion:

If you find the CPU is the bottleneck: either leave the preset as it is and live with the status quo, which will get you a better stream quality for most of the time but sometimes make you miss some frames here and there and show some stutter. Or if you think the stuttering is too much of a problem then use an even lower preset and live with having a little worse quality in total but no more stuttering.

If you haven't done it already of course also check whether you can take more load away from the CPU. Disabling the firewall/antivirus on the laptop during your streams and closing all other programs that you don't really need (e.g. I found that running OneDrive sometimes produces CPU usage even if it doesn't have anything to sync) might help. Also to minimize the OBS window during your stream so that it doesn't have to render it's UI. Even small details can matter, e.g. on my streaming PC I am also running Discord and Spotify and when I had encoding lags on stream I found I could stop them by making sure Spotify is not showing one of this preview videos (that produces CPU usage) and minimizing both Spotify and Discord. Interestingly what also helped was disabling hardware acceleration in both programs (doesn't make sense to me as that should actually take load away from the CPU but well, that was my observation).

Since you are using a laptop cooling might also be an issue. Many laptops cool themselves down by 2 things when they run too hot: increase the fan speed and throttle the CPU clock (desktop PCs do it too in theory but a lot more rarely than laptops). Again, this throttling could only happen for milliseconds without you really noticing but affect your stream quality. So you might also want to check whether you have cooling options, e.g. put the laptop in a cooler place or put it on an extra cooling pad for laptops. (example)

u/geekgodzeus · 2 pointsr/AcerOfficial

I own a 2016 Acer predator so i can't answer the 1st question but since 2 and 3 are general i will help you avoid some of the mistakes I made.
2. Check and monitor your temps. After about a year of usage suddenly my FPS for gaming tanked. I used Speccy and realised the motherboard was overheating. I opened up the laptop chassis and found that one of the fan connectors for the mobo was loose. Then the same thing happened but for the CPU and GPU. I changed the horrible gunk Acer calls thermal paste and voila-temperatures in high 60's to low 70's with a gaming load. My only regret is I over-tightened the screws and stripped some of them. Also clean the exhaust fans from time to time to avoid build up of dust which will increase your temperatures.
Get a good waterproof backpack to carry it with extra padding. If you use it for work and home(gaming) invest in an extra power adapter(don't need it to be the original one). That way all you have to do is plug it in and won't risk damaging the power adapter like I did. Plus its a real hassle to cable manage and carry the extra brick and cord.
3.I do recommend getting a good laptop cooler. I ordered this one but it hasn't been delivered yet.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01469DJLM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Again a mistake not to use one from the start as it actually will boost performance since the CPU and GPU boost frequencies will be maintained if thermal throttling doesn't occur.

Let me know if you have any other doubts and congrats on your new laptop.

u/surface_book · 2 pointsr/Surface

You can add this to any USB-Hub.

https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-External-Multi-Monitor-Graphics-USB32HDEH/dp/B00C2AS5C6, but it's only the HDMI, and it's already $80.

Since $129 for the Surface Dock is "criminal", I'm not sure what's "acceptable". I recommended this USB-to-HDMI because it's 4k; going forward you don't want to have to replace an entire dock just to get higher def.. Also you want portability, so a small compact USB3 hub would go well. You wouldn't need to pull out the HDMI port unless you needed, making the hub you buy smaller, and cheaper.

EDIT: Note: sending display over USB will eat battery and also not perform very well for rapid programs. It's not terrible, but will slow down depending on what else you send through USB.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/Surface

That's a completely fine system for nearly any student or professional use.

The amount of storage might be a bit low, but if that's what you can afford right now, you can easily work around this:

  1. Expand your available media and document storage if needed using a micro SD card. Samsung EVO Select is a good brand and the Select cards are faster than earlier generation models.

  2. Use the cloud. Your school will likely issue you either a Microsoft Office 365 or Google GSuite account, and you can keep your files entirely online or sync what you need to your device using OneDrive or Google Drive.

  3. Add an external SSD like a Samsung T5 (most expensive and least convenient option, but there if you need it)

If you find yourself needing more ports when you are out and about, you can add this great SP6 expander from Juiced Systems:

    https://juicedsystems.com/products/optix-adapter-surface-pro-6-multifunction-adapter

If you want to use your Surface as a desktop PC in your dorm room (and have an external monitor, keyboard and mouse) then you may enjoy the Surface Dock:

    https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-PD9-00003-Surface-Dock/dp/B0163HP38W
u/AlexOughton · 2 pointsr/Surface

The current version of the Surface Dock does indeed work with the Book 2. This is the current version:

https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-PD9-00003-Surface-Dock/dp/B0163HP38W/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1511801382&sr=8-3&keywords=surface+dock

(This version looks like a brick covered in ports, and connects to the Surface via a cable. Older versions directly held the Surface (Pro) inside of the dock).

This is exactly what I have on my desk. The Surface Dock goes to my Surface Book 2, and DisplayPort-to-DVI cables go to my monitors.

u/kaskadefan · 2 pointsr/homelab
u/theswee18 · 2 pointsr/Surface

The dock has two DP ports, no HDMI. You can see all the ports in the pics on the Amazon product page here. If you need HDMI to Mini-DP converter, you can get the one I use here. I prefer surface dock because I love how easy it is to connect the Surface connect port to my computer and then just have charging, displays, and all my USB-stuff just work. If you get a USB-C dock, even if it does charging, I can't guarantee that it will charge it well. The SP7 seems to charge slower on USB-C than on Surface Connect port. If you plan on plugging in but then also having a port to run your dock, you should look at this USB-C dock. But again, I love that the Surface Dock does everything in one connection, and then my USB-C port is still available if I need to connect anything that way.

That 40w one you linked is 40w across all of the ports. (Again, if the FCC filing is correct-) The Switch needs a single 39W connection, which requires USB-PD. That means the charger itself actively negotiates power needs with the device, and needs to apply variable voltage in the charger. The closest equivalent is the Innergie 45w USB-PD charger at $60:

https://smile.amazon.com/Innergie-PowerGear-USB-C-45-Adapter/dp/B0188PAD00

And with USB-C there are a ton of suspect and very dangerous chargers built by manufacturers who can't figure out how to follow the specification properly. This could result in damaged hardware or worse (fire hazards).

u/cl191 · 2 pointsr/Android

Thanks for the review OP! Wish you had the one from one from the 5x and this one tested as well, I kept seeing the later charger in the store and wonder if it's any good since it's kind of pricey too.

u/GRat9717 · 2 pointsr/EDC

So a few days ago I took a shot at trying a few of the 'cheap' $30 shoulder bags on Amazon. I ordered a bunch and this was the one that remained after a few hours of testing all of them. It holds absolutely everything despite being such a small bag (13.9" Height, 10.5" Width, 4.1" Depth). The pockets make the most sense when compared to competitors. Here is my carry list with some updates that show its full versatility (especially as a personal item when flying). Also, bag link here.

The Razer ones appear to have a pretty high failure rate, a friend of mine had 2 die the second one just outside of a year and Razer refused to replace. Really shit unfortunately so I'd recommend buying another brand charger.

It has some odd voltage requirements so make sure you find one that matches exactly, I tried my Chromebook one with a blade and it didn't work.

I'll find the name of the one he ordered and is using and pm you.

Edit: just found it, is this one https://www.amazon.com/Innergie-PowerGear-USB-C-45-Adapter/dp/B0188PAD00 I think it's the 20V/2.25A that the blade needs.

or get one of those usb powered cooling fans that attach on to the exhaust of your mac. there are a few on the market capable of high rpm and some are adjustable either automatic by temps or can be set manually to your preference. i had one of these and added it to my laptop 3 years after i bought it. It used to shut down randomly at high temps and ever since then i have never had issues with heat ever since.

Heres the one i have (i dont know if we are allowed to post amazon links so sorry in advance)

u/Thingsiponder · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Both. I've repaired HP laptops, gaming models and regular consumer models and the HP brand far out numbers all the other brands I fix. And it's always from overheating, resulting usually in ordering another motherboard and replacing it. I would seriously avoid them at all costs.

Since you've gotten one already, make sure to get a can of air, and blow out the vents at least once a month. Don't ever put it on your lap or bed, or any other soft surface, keep it on a hard surface if possible. Look into the Opolar series of laptop coolers, they really displace a lot of air and will help to keep it cool. https://www.amazon.com/Opolar-Laptop-Temperature-Display-Cooling/dp/B01E3Q7FS6/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1480278659&sr=1-3&keywords=opolar

Cooling pads that sit on the bottom don't do jack.

You might need to replace the thermal paste in a year or two, look up a youtube disassembly video for your laptop and familiarize yourself with proper repasting techniques.

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=hp+15-ay195nr+disassembly

I'm assuming from those specs you are worried if it will overheat based on casual use, because you won't be gaming too hard on those specs. Best of luck!

u/Zerdalias · 2 pointsr/EDC

Oh! Yes, I see what you mean! And I have had it for about 2 years maybe and its held up extremely well. It even survived a trip up Machu Picchu and Rainbow mountain and still looks as new as the day that I bought it.

I was also extremely confused by that. I was like, why do I all of a sudden have a zero and then I noticed you had -2! What is that? So bizarre, I'll give you an upvote to even it out. Haha.

u/themdeadeyes · 2 pointsr/goodyearwelt

This is my current bag for getting around the city.

I just recently moved to Brooklyn and felt like the old Jansport I had wasn’t comfortable to wear and carry for hours at a time. It had the space and organizational features I needed for the most part, but it just wasn’t that comfortable when I was wearing it for hours at a time, even when it was adjusted properly.

I bought this on a whim because it was cheap and smaller. It fits everything I need (a full change of clothes including shoes) with room to spare in case I pick something up while I’m out. The organization in the front pocket is great.

The charging port is actually far more useful than I thought it would be. It’s got a specific pocket to hold a portable charger that the cable routs into perfectly. I’ve actually found myself regularly using it (although I now wish it was USB-C PD compatible since I just upgraded all of my charging devices this week).

I don’t currently need to carry my laptop with me, but it fits my 15” MacBook Pro with my thick wool sheath case and has great padding for protection.

For a cheap backpack, I’d definitely recommend it.

I’ll be moving to a new position soon where I might need to travel the city with more organization and if I find this to be lacking, I’ll probably move over to this, which has great reviews.

u/elkheadman · 2 pointsr/Dell

Honestly, I don't really have any complaints. Honestly I can't really think of anything

When you read about people commenting on how solidly it's built they are not lying; this thing feels sturdy.

I have a Mancro backpack which is designed for 17 and under sized laptops and this pushes the limits of the laptop sleeve in it although it does fit easily. The power brick is no big deal either. Together on my back, the weight isn't bad at all.

See below for context:

Any other questions, just let me know. I'll do my best to answer.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01LY3QXGP?th=1&psc=1#

I also purchased a Timbuk2 for my cousin's graduation gift and she loved it! I personally used the Recon throughout my college years but prefer the old model vs the newer one that came out about 2 years ago (I think). The newer model felt as if everything was way too compressed with very little space vs the old model had a lot of space to fit a laptop, notebooks, and two textbooks, no problem.

I use it as a minimalistic camera bag and love it. If your looking for that type of thing. It's advertised as water resistant but I don't know how much I would trust it, seems like it would keep everything dry in the rain which is all you can really ask for $30. Great backpack though I'm loving it!

You can use a USB-C dock that has 2 DisplayPorts, a couple of USB ports, and power passthrough, like this. Then use 2 DisplayPort to DVI cables. Then EVERYTHING on your desk will go through 1 cable.

u/XSSpants · 2 pointsr/Monitors

Lenovo's TB3 dock should? work.

Alternately, https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Thunderbolt-Compatible/dp/B0746NKVBN/ref=sr_1_20?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1522865723&sr=1-20&keywords=dual+cable+matters cheap docks like that work for a lot of things.

If you don't mind using both usb-c ports at the same time, just get a simple DPP adapter for each.

u/bloogles1 · 2 pointsr/thinkpad

Whatever you need! for 2x Screens, DP Alternate over USB-C can only really drive 2x DP @ 1440P 60hz before it runs out of bandwidth - Dual 4K @ 30Hz is possible but I don't consider that usable for normal work. Also you'll have to give up Gigabit Ethernet and USB 3 because of bandwidth limitations.

Something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Multiport-DisplayPort-Ethernet/dp/B0746NKVBN?ref_=w_bl_hsx_s_hi_web_13705622011

But it may fit your needs, Keyboard/Mouse/PD Passthrough and 2xFHD.

Otherwise you will have to go TB3 which is much more $$. If you want eGPU Lenovo has the TB3 Graphic dock w/ the 1050, however also be aware most eGPU Docks may have flaky compatibility with certain mice/keyboard, basically bandwidth allocation issues. It usually rears it's head when you have load on the GPU portion, seeing as the T480s only has twin lane, you could run into bandwidth issues under heavy load where USB connections may drop intermittently however this is a general issue with pretty much all current TI83 TB3 implementations which almost all eGPUs use.

u/chx_ · 2 pointsr/USBC

Why on earth would you spend so much money on a dock? https://smile.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Multiport-DisplayPort-Ethernet/dp/B0746NKVBN this is enough for you, I think at least.

> I really see the usefulness of TB3 hubs only when one would also like to charge the laptop with just one cable,

Wrong, USB C can charge just as well. TB3 is useful when your video and data speed requirements are higher than what USB C can provide (USB 2.0 + 4K + 1080p or USB 3.0 + 2 1080p / 1 3440 x 1440). Minimal use case for TB3 is 4K @ 60 Hz + USB 3.0 and can go up to 2 * 4K @ 60 Hz or even 5k @ 60 Hz plus USB 3.0. Alternatively, you need external PCI Express lanes, that's also TB3 territory.

I installed this panel. There are youtube videos with instructions. Basically you carefully pry the bezzle off, undo 4 small screws, and undo a connector. Reverse those steps with the new panel and boom, you've got a 120hz panel with 8-bit color depth and much higher brightness. I would highly recommend, the factory panels on these things are garbage unless you lucked out and got an AUO panel instead of the normal LG panel.

This unit scored 4.5 out of 5 on Amazon. Please note that this model is discontinued and there are many refurbished units available. This looks like a refurbished unit. I would check warranty. Pass if 180 days or less. You can get a 1 year warranty on a refurbished unit if bought from the Dell Outlet. I paid $360 new from Amazon in December right as these were being discounted/discontinued. You will also need a keyboard & a mouse ($25-50), a headset with mic ($10-100+) and possibly a monitor ($100-150).

You are not going to get an unbiased opinion on a pre-built PC in a sub-reddit called buildapc. These are a great buy at ~$360 for new(er) units. These can be use for low to middle desktop gaming but are designed as an affordable set-top PC console. For the listed games, this unit will do okay to very good (not great to mind blowing fabulous) graphics.

Things to know:

  • These are made to hook up to a HDTV and only have a single HDMI port for graphics. There is no VGA port. Thus, you will need a monitor (or TV) that takes HDMI or DVI (DVI requires a HDMI to DVI cable or adapter).

  • The default interface is called HiveMind and built on top of XBMC/Kodi and will launch Steam in Big Picture Mode. This computer interface is designed to be controlled with a controller. Many PC games support a controller. However, 3 of 4 games you listed are best played with a mouse and keyboard.

  • For audio output, these only have HDMI and S/PDIF ports. Because your son wants to play online with friends, he will need a headset with mic. You can use a [Xbox 360 headset ] (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_11?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=xbox+360+headset&sprefix=xbox+360+headset%2Caps%2C169) that plugs into the game controller ($10-25). - OR - Get a USB audio adapter ($6) and use a standard wired headset ($10-100). I recommend the USB audio adapter if desktop gaming. My unit had a problem that when the game controller shut off the PC audio would have problems. If you hook to a TV, look into getting a wireless headset ($50-100+) or again a headset that hooks into the controller.

  • The game controller for this unit is wireless and requires 2 AA batteries. I recommend getting rechargeable batteries and a charge base ($25) because the controllers eat batteries and need a place to live when not in use.

  • Plan to get an extra wireless xbox 360 controller for when his friends come over or he needs a quick controller swap.

  • Plan to upgrade to Windows 10.

  • For this unit a SSD swap down the road is recommended and an extra 4GB of memory while you are at it.

  • There are 5 USB ports. 2 in the front, 2 in the back, and 1 hidden on the bottom. I found it's actually pretty easy to run out of USB ports. My configuration: one for the wireless game controller dongle, two for the keyboard & mouse, one for the USB audio adapter.
u/Dweller · 2 pointsr/xbox360

Cooling pads can definitely help, as long as they're good quality fans. I use them on all my laptops and you can feel the temperature difference just by touching them, especially if they run hot. Cooler Master makes some good ones. I use the CM NotePal X2 and NotePal X3 on my 2 gaming laptops and have a few more of the cheaper ones for my regular/home use laptops. Your laptop isn't extremely accessible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNjoRpVDEiI

The big thing is you really don't want to blow the dust back into the laptop - you want to blow it out. So if you used compressed air on the intake on what looks to be the bottom, be careful and use short busts so as to not make the fans spin too fast.

Other things to check - make sure you are using a flat surface with airflow underneath. If there's no dust, you want to make sure the fans are spinning and you can look at spending a relatively small amount of money to get a cooler like this: http://www.amazon.com/Targus-Chill-Laptop-Black-AWE55US/dp/B002NU5O9C/ref=sr_1_1_m?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1464116228&sr=1-1&keywords=targus+laptop+cooler

There's a usb cord that plugs in and turns the fans on with it. I used one for my Dell laptop and it worked great.

u/TaxiRadio · 2 pointsr/classicwow

If you want to get the best performance you can, I would recommend getting a laptop cooling pad. When a computer had to do a lot of work it generates heat, in order to protect it self from overheating your computer will purposely slow it's self down. Getting a laptop cooling pad will help with heat generation and is the cheapest and easily thing you can do to get a performance boost from your laptop.

The targus cooling pad is ideal for on-your-lap situations because it provides a neoprene padded surface for your lap, but if you use your laptop on a desk or something with more stability, id recommend something a bit more ergonomic like those with adjustable height/angle. that would be really useful if i didnt have a laptop stand. its a small laptop, so i like to keep it at a height thats more comfortable at home

u/Arnold_Schrodinger · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I recently pick up one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/ROCCAT-Widescreen-Designed-Flatscreen-Monitors/dp/B002RSQ732

Its buckled around the monitor with adjustable straps and it has worked really well for me. I like that the bottom has an open slot for the stand to come through so you can set down the monitor when you need to. The screen protector portion is really great too, cushioning the screen on its face but the other side is very hard and durable so I can put it face down on the car seat or up against something if needed.

I bought my brother one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/ThinkGeek-GearGrip-Pro-Large-Size/dp/B00021UJ62/

He said it worked great for him! I would get one for myself but I already bolted a metal pipe handle to the top of my tower for ease of carrying haha.

u/Gingaskunk · 2 pointsr/Vive

There were battery packs posted on here back when the Vive first came out but I don't use them. I ask for two outlets but if not available I have a 75ft extension cord and a 30ft one. I'll run the 30ft from an outlet to a power strip that runs the computer and one light house, then the 75ft one from that power strip to the LH in the opposite corner. I've never had an issue with that.

I have two STANDS with two MOUNTS for the LH units to sit on. I used the mounts and power adapters in the box for my home setup and bought 2 x POWER ADAPTERS and 2 x POWER EXTENDERS to run the LH from on the road. These both live in the front pocket of my MONITOR BAG while I am home.

I also bought ONE, EACH, OF THESE to give me some wiggle room on bigger setups too.

u/Arcturus075 · 2 pointsr/Alienware

Yeah they have lost their edge a bit, but not too blinded by fandom to ignore it. I have no problem going against its constitutes, even if it falls at times. All in all it is your choice, whatever you choice; various heat temps by others reported has a lot of factors the temp of the room, what it is on, the dust built up over time. No matter what you end up choosing to go with, I would say get a extra laptop cooler on your machine, every little bit helps overtime.

Personally I have two coolers on my laptop machine, (Coolmaster massive 200mm fan I believe, and havoc vacuum on the vent [CPU focus] on the side./vacuum is an example they don't make my model anymore they cost 15-30 usually on amazon.) and it helps it run much cooler. I will now always keep the combo, because it's just overall healthier for the machine. I have 10 year old machine so it actually needs it now. Thermal past has worn away.

If you are bit paranoid about cooling (for laptops you should always be) a 3rd party seller that can help out is http://www.xoticpc.com/ they offer stronger cooling that's above any manufacturers default; cost more obviously. ( $35ish.) Can customize them too, an they have more than just Alienware (seems the 17x 980m is sold out for the moment sadly.) there too pretty much every gaming laptop brand.

An AW fanboy so I want to bully towards them(pretty colors!), but you have to get what is right for you. If there is another brand that's cheaper that seems to be the better performer go for it! AW is about gaming and doing whatever you want with the power that machine gives, and it's not the only one that can do it. Just don't get a macbook pro...I will not support that at all, and they actually run as hot gaming laptops without the power! But in all I just want to help a fellow gamer out. Giving you the most tools that can use to make a judgement.

u/FloatAround · 2 pointsr/Alienware

I use a Coolmaster X3 on my 17R4. It will work fine on your 15. Took me from high 90s to low 80s while gaming. Hasn't peaked past 85 even after extended hours.

u/coma420 · 2 pointsr/PS4Pro

It's a laptop cooling pad. It's mainly just to elevate the PS4 a bit, and was only used in my old entertainment center. It breathes plenty now so I guess I don't really need it, but I'll keep it under there for summer and see how it does when it's warmer. I like having the option to turn it on and blow a bit of cooler air around the PS4.
As for the receiver, it's a piece of shit that I'd never recommend. I used to have a Pioneer Elite, but needed to upgrade to go 4k, and went cheap with a $300 Sony receiver. Never again. I'll probably look at selling it some time this summer and upgrading to a real receiver again.

u/Friscis · 2 pointsr/yugioh

Keep in mind this is the smaller DSLR bag Amazon offers whose inner dimensions have a Max length of around 13 inches, meaning your 14 inch mat may not fit. Therefore this one, while $10 more will probably be better since it has internal dimension of 15 inches, which will be enough to roll up your mat and not crumple it.

u/CheeseHumper · 2 pointsr/pkmntcg

I currently use this bad boy

As of right now I have 4 MtG modern decks, 3 MtG Commander decks (100 cards), a draft deck box (sleeves and basic lands for MtG), and 3 Pokemon TCG decks in the large middle section. In the back pocket I keep both my MtG and Pokemon trade binders and in the front I keep all my dice and counters and my notepad. I also bought a tube to hold my playmat and have that strapped to the side where the camera mount is in the pictures. It holds a ton and the price is amazing considering what they are trying to sell card specific backpacks with the same layout for.

u/findMyWay · 2 pointsr/Surface

Glad to see that the old CB2 is still in the game. I've had one myself for about 2 years now and it's still going strong, so it's definitely not obsolete (especially not for 90$). It can get slow sometimes, but hey, every laptop does. There is some creaking because the thing is plastic, and it has some dings and scratches because I didn't baby it, but it's a great collage machine.

u/LinkToThis · 2 pointsr/mac

Cooling pads are good, and also can raise your laptop at an angle for more comfortable typing over long periods.

I use this as it is possible to move the fans to where they are needed for different laptops.

u/Rickrogue · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I used a Cooler Master NotePal. I have the U2 which was usurped by the U3. Solid metal design with 3 fans that you can move and place where you want/need cooling. It was referred to me from the notebook check forums 5 or 6 years back. Worked great.

edit. Don't know if it is cheap, but is a great cooler.

u/VitaHemp · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Take a look at this extra cooler. Someone else linked the same type of design as this one, but from what I can tell this one seems to get better ratings and reviews. Granted, I didn't look too much into it.

You should also take a look at this cooling pad. I have a similar version and it worked absolute wonders for me until I finally got my desktop. It's a very open cooler so air flow shouldn't be too much of a problem as you stated you experience with your current cooler.
You can also adjust exactly where you want the fans so that they blow right into the vents on your laptop.

Of course, there's the obvious possibility that your laptop outputs far more heat than mine did, so take my recommendation of this cooling pad with a grain of salt.

u/MoodyPandu · 2 pointsr/Dell

There are vents underneath, but also at the vertical-top part of the keyboard which blow the hot air up in front of your screen. For my previous laptop I had already purchased this cooler, which I still use. Don't know if it actively cools alot, but the aluminium bottom doesn't heat up as much which is a good thing I guess.

Besides the cooling I really like the position the cooler gives for writing and the adjustable fan speed though.

u/llamaman456 · 2 pointsr/techsupport

As for the temps issue try a cooling pad like this one https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-NotePal-PLUS-Performance/dp/B00ED3WMTC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1501045732&sr=8-3&keywords=cooler+master+cooling+pad. In terms of windows not starting up, try going into bios on startup and manually selecting the drive you want to boot from. If that doesnt work Reinstalling Windows at this point would be best for starters. Your going to need to create windows installation media, by following this guide https://mspoweruser.com/how-to-create-a-bootable-usb-drive-for-windows-10/ Bear in mind all your files will be wiped off the drive. If you need to recover the product key your going to need a separate usb drive to turn into Hirens bootable drive using this guide. https://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd-on-usb-disk Once you boot into Hirens your looking for Produkey/windows key viewer. Finally to save any files while your booted into Hirens, use a separate third blank usb key and move all the files you want onto it.

The 10c was with fans the 8c was without. The fans make so little difference I think that the bigger issue is simple airflow.

If your laptop sucks air from the bottom then I would suggest that one and the best part is you can move the fans around

u/Darkstarrdp · 2 pointsr/Alienware

That would be a "Cooler Master NotePal U3 Plus" I bought on Amazon around a year ago. It has 3 fans underneath that you can latch-in below your bottom grille for a little extra airflow, but they don't really push much air. The stand is lightweight aluminium which is easy to carry around, but the handle ended up breaking on me from everyday use, other then that it's been a decent buy, helped lower the temps on my previous Acer laptop by around 5-10 degree's.

Shopping Link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ED3WMTC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

EDIT: Just checked the reseller prices on Amazon. I bought mine for 30 dollars with free shipping, it's advertised now for 60+ dollars, I think for 30 bucks it was worth it, but I wouldn't pay over 40 for one, there are better options that would last longer then this pad at that pricerange.

http://www.amazon.com/Wenger-GA-7305-14F00-SwissGear-Computer-Backpack/dp/B000NONHYY Has treated me well. I got mine back in 2008, and it still looks practically new. It's gone through grad school in a major city (and all the public transportation that entails), vacations, and general duty as my daily messenger bag to/from work. The laptop sleeve is well-padded, the material feels heavy and secure, and it looks decent too.

u/99e99 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Check out xoticpc.com for a good variety of gaming laptops. 17" laptops get pretty heavy.. even 15.6" is quite a load - might want to consider getting something smaller instead of lugging it around to class all day. If you really want a bigger screen it might be worth it to buy a 22" or 24" monitor for $130-ish and keep it in your dorm/apartment and carry something more portable.

Also invest in a good laptop backpack. My backpack is easily 15 lbs with all the crap I carry and I can barely feel it.

I used my Swiss Gear backpack for years. It could still go for many more. They have some that fit your budget and requirements.

I used this one.

u/DILGE · 1 pointr/backpacks

I bought a Swiss Gear for this exact purpose. Not only is it perfect for this, it is also the best daily carry backpack I have ever owned. On a daily basis, I have my MBP 13", iPad Pro 10.5", and my Fujifilm XE-3 with two lenses. Each device basically has its own zipper compartment, which is super handy. It also has various smaller compartments for small tools, cables, chargers, pens, meds, food, etc.

The camera and the lenses I keep in a much smaller Timbuk2 shoulder bag that easily slides in and out of the main compartment. (I got this bag at an REI garage sale for cheap, so I couldn't find a link for the exact one) I don't know how big your camera is but if it is a similar size to mine, you will have no problem fitting other stuff into the main compartment as well. The benefit to this smaller bag is if I want to set my backpack down and walk somewhere else with just the camera, I will have everything I need to do so, including extra camera batteries and SD cards.

I highly recommend this bag.

I recently bought a swissgear bag for about 95 dollars at best buy for work so I could bring my personal HP 17" laptop on trips with me. I have to bring a 12-13" tablet pc and a 15" laptop with me on all trips, so the 95 dollars to be able to bring a personal machine was worth it right there. There is more than enough storage for whatever you could possible want to bring. I wouldn't check the bag though. There is enough room for the laptop, but not a ton of room for some asshole to throw the thing.

You can see my current laptop, a 17" Sager. Next to it is my chromebook. Below that are my backpack which almost fits the Sager and the laptop bag that I adjusted to hold it (fits holds laptop, mouse, power brick, external drive, mouse, and tablet).
The two mice are a Zowie EC2-A and a Logitech M510. If you aren't an fps nut the cheap logitech is great and the wireless dongle fits in the mouse for transport, or can be left in the usb slot with a low profile. To the right of those are one of my external hard drives, wallet, and glasses case. The TV is 22 inches and not pictured is my wacom intuos pro medium tablet which fits perfectly on top of the Sager when I travel.

So here's what I've learned. 17 inch bags are pretty much limited to satchel style bags. Even my 15.4in bag is freaking huge on my back and I could fit all of the books I needed each day + 13 inch macbook pro in there comfortably. The 17in pc's were too much trouble to carry to/from classes, but the mbp was easy and the chromebook is so small/light I keep thinking I've lost it.

Despite being a pain, I would typically switch homes every few days and having a 17in laptop was pretty nice. I'd usually throw clothes + headset in my backpack and carry two bags wherever I was going. While cumbersome, I didn't mind carry the big laptops for lan parties or visiting friends for a night. It was mostly the school environment (switch classes, waiting around, lack of outlets, crowded table) where it got in the way.

Its a bit bulky (like using a school backpack crammed with books), but it is AWESOME! The internal foam dividers are thick and sturdy. Good article. What about case/backpack? I picked a cheap Case Logic SLRC-206 but now that I carry 2 bodies, I am looking at the Tenba Shootout.

Body with a flip out screen is also a good call. When getting shots of bathrooms and small rooms, it is very helpful.

I use it with the stock 4k and there's room to spare. The only downside is it can get top heavy if your camera body is the heaviest thing in your bag. I learned about it from this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHt12BmewPU

On most laptops, both a hard drive and a memory upgrade are very simple. There is usually a cover on the bottom of the laptop for the hard drive, and often the memory as well. Some machines have the memory under the keyboard, although I have not seen that as much in recent years.

RAM is the easier of the two upgrades, because you just plug it in, and go back to work. The HDD upgrade will require you to copy everything to the new hard drive, and that does take more work.

For your model of laptop, I went to Sony's site, and guickly found this guide to replacing a hard drive which shows everything in good detail. It would be easy todo the mechanical part.

This general user guide shows how to upgrade the RAM. Most reputable memory manufacturers will be happy to help you pick the correct RAM.

Changing the fan will be a bit more complex, and I usually farm that out as vendor warranty work, because I just don't want to deal with it. However, if you are overheating, getting a powered cooling pad, such as this, can help quite a bit in some situations. Overheating will cause the CPU to run slower, and one of those could help.

u/Ghh0st · 1 pointr/techsupport

For a cooling pad:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-Notepal-X2-Notebook/dp/B002MU1ZRS/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1369859024&sr=8-3-fkmr0&keywords=Cooler+Master+NotePal+X2+Laptop+Cooling+Pad+with+140mm+Blue+LED+Fan+%28R9-NBC-4WAK-GP%29.

I live in the US and this pad has about 1,200 reviews and it's overall rating is at 4.75 stars.

As for your cleaning question, compressed air is the best way to go. Blow the air both ways into the intake and exhaust in order to assure you got as much dust as you can out. If you know the ins and outs of your laptop, an even better way is to take it apart and clean the fans that way (using compressed air again).

Hope this helps.

u/staypuff626 · 1 pointr/gaming

Those fans are the little $10 cheap fans from walmart that barely push any air at all (it's probably not doing much at all). Why not invest in one of these if you don't have a desktop? Trust me you won't be able to use your laptop without it once you have one.

u/GUI_Fawkes · 1 pointr/techsupport

You really should have gotten a cooling pad for your computer. Excessive overheating can lead to ruined parts.

If your processor however does return to normal (High allocation may be due to misses from L1 cache repeatedly because of heat dissipation), I would recommend this cooling pad:

u/jayrod111 · 1 pointr/EngineeringStudents

I use this, I have had it for almost a year and my laptop is always resting ontop and I have never had any temperture problems, even when running large programs like solidworks or playing video games.

u/Oneiropticon · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

after dropping mine and having fan blades fall out, this does a pretty good job of keeping things cool. the fan is in the center, which isn't optimal for mine, but it still works fine.

u/aetrix · 1 pointr/Overwatch

TL;DR: point a fan at it

Back in the early 00's I spent all my high school graduation money on an Alien A51m laptop. You want to talk about overheating? This sucker had a full-blown desktop Pentium 4 inside. Astonishingly, the thing never shut itself off but the ATI GPU would overheat and throttle itself in short order, reducing fps to the single digits.

How did I stop this? I elevated the rear of the laptop to give it more room to breathe, and I pointed one of those 6" spring-clamp desk fans at it.

So you can get a fan. Or you can buy something like THIS.

u/pocolypse · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I have used a cooling pad with a fan before (this is it) and it worked pretty well for my laptop, so I am thinking that a pad with a fan in it would be best. Also, I would prefer that it would be able to run via a USB port.

35GB Should be enough for you to bootcamp and install steam on, you won't have room for much else though if you decide that you like using Windows for other applications (and increasing a partition size is a huge pain in the ass).

Is CS:GO actually causing your MacBook to overheat (loss in performance or malfunctions) or is the exterior warm / fans kicking on high? Macbooks actually use the frame to help vent heat from the interior components, and that is why it seems like it gets warm to the touch easily.

Either way, I do tend to notice less heat issues running games in bootcamp just because they are better optimized, and also Windows has more features for manual fan control to help with heating issues. (OSX has a couple options but Windows has more that are more robust). If you are still having issues with heat, I'd also highly recommend getting something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Targus-Chill-Laptop-Black-AWE55US/dp/B002NU5O9C

u/kramdiw · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

You're welcome for the help!

Now...how long a computer lasts really all depends on two things:

  1. How well you take care of it
  2. The manufacturer's design and the parts they use.

    Regarding #1:

As long as you don't bang it around, drop it, spill anything on it, & you always use a cooling pad (NEVER use a laptop directly on a pillow/blanket/etc. to keep your lap from overheating. Spend $40 on a good cooling pad), it should last awhile (barring any 'lemon' parts, that is). IMHO, this cooling pad is about the best one you can get. Also, it doesn't hurt to get a keyboard skin for around $8-10. I use one on my laptop and pretty much nothing gets into my keyboard (and I can use it like normal).

    EDIT

Oh, two of the more common parts to fail/break on a laptop (other than the video) are the power jack and one or both hinges. This is because these parts are the ones most often physically manipulated by the user. Take care when opening/closing the lid and when you plug in the charger, and they should last just as long as the rest of it. Just make sure that people aren't going to trip over your cord when it's plugged into the wall. This can damage the power jack more than a lot of other things...the cord being yanked out of the jack at an angle.

    Regarding #2:

I have seen so-called cheap laptops last for years (the $349 Compaq that I bought my girlfriend back in 2009 is going strong) and I have seen expensive ones die right around a week after the warranty expired :/

HP had a whole line of laptops suck hard (dv2000s, dv6000s, and dv9000s - the latter starting at around $1350). The video would go out on these things (right around a year in) requiring a motherboard replacement. There were cheaper fixes, but they weren't permanent. The extended the warranties of around half of the affected models. My dad and GF both had models/serial numbers that weren't covered so they were kinda screwed. Does this mean that all HP computers are shit? No it doesn't. It can be a bit of a crap shoot with newer models though. That HP I linked you to has a decent low-end processor (Intel Pentium 2020M), the minimum amount of RAM anyone should want anymore (4GB, expandable to 8GB), and a reasonable hard drive (500GB). It also has an optical drive (Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW), which a lot of higher end laptops don't anymore.

It won't be the fastest laptop by any stretch of the imagination, but it should be fine for email/Internet/Office Suite/Netflix - maybe even some light Photoshop work - but not a lot more than that.

    EDIT #2

There's another package deal with the same everything plus Microsoft Office for $120 more.

I'm worried it might be a video card issue – like maybe your video card overheated while playing a game and is damaged. If you think this could be the issue, you might try to keep your laptop cool while gaming on it. I like to prop my laptop up on 4 disposable water bottle lids and get a fan to blow air under it. Or for a less ghetto solution, you could get a cooling pad like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002NU5O9C/

You can buy a hard case if you really want to protect it from damage, but that would be a massive, heavy box.

If you just want to make it easier to carry, you can find carrying straps like this:

u/Markyy88 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Oh no, 300 dollars for the school laptop that you use back and forth and a build at your main place. A monitor back in forth would be to buy a suitcase or monitor carrier if they make those. I thought you needed a build alternative to a laptop. http://www.amazon.com/ROCCAT-Widescreen-Designed-Flatscreen-Monitors/dp/B002RSQ732 here is a monitor carrier.

u/dispensetheJUDO · 1 pointr/buildapc

As far as monitor transport goes I would check out this. It is pricey right now but you can pick them up for around 40 bucks usually.

As for transporting the whole rig I would check out this.

Both of those are very well made and make transportation of expensive equipment a breeze.

As far as cases go I would just advise you to do lots and lots of research... most mini cases will allow you to squeeze in something equivalent to an h80i inside but then you have the tubing blocking airflow. I am fairly certain that this Noctua will fit inside something like a node 304... however I would recommend that you find a case that allows you to fit a fan on the top blowing down directly on the motherboard(I think the Silverstone SG-05 is the smallest case that will allow this). Just take a look at how much more efficiently the Silverstone SG-07(now the much more sleek looking SG-08) is at cooling down the hardware inside.

One last thing... ASUS is about to release this monster if you haven't seen it already.

u/dmlang · 1 pointr/ultrawidemasterrace

Once you have gotten used to the 3440x1440 I don't think you would enjoy going to the other resolution. Consider using something like this carrying device I will link and just don't clip the side straps, that's how I transported a monitor while I was in college. https://www.amazon.com/ROCCAT-TUSKO-Across-board-Flatscreen/dp/B002RSQ732/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1526153846&sr=8-6&keywords=monitor+carrying

u/Masark · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Yup. Laptops can only fit itty bitty fans, which need to spin very fast to move a useful amount of air, which makes lots of noise. Bigger fans can spin slower, making less noise, while moving more air.

This is why desktops have moved to larger fans over the years. 15 years ago, 80mm was the norm. Now 120mm is basically universal and 140mm and larger aren't unusual.

As for a solution, look into a fan pad, preferably with a single very big fan. It will keep the internal fans from spinning up too much while keeping the temperatures down. I personally have this one, which works nicely for my 17" clevo.

Get a cooling pad like this or this (the Pro is basically a large gaming laptop) put PS4 Pro on it and connect the cooling pad to the USB port on the console.

The fan will auto start with the console, the pad has a fan on/off button along with a dial for cooling speed on the side of it for finer control.

The pad might be able to force enough cool air into the console that R6 wont shut off if you don't mind the extra noise it makes.

My current bag (which I absolutely love) is the AmazonBasics DSLR Bag. I've had it for over a year now and it's still in great condition, even after taking it for many hikes and beach trips. My only problem with it now is that I am running out of space as it is a kind of small bag.

Pros: Cheap, good camera and lens storage, has a tripod holder on the side, it's well organised

Cons: Small size, doesn't look that great.. Honestly, these are the only two cons I can think of, and they are both subjective.

If you think this could be a problem for you, there's also the bigger AmazonBasics DSLR and Laptop Bag. I haven't tried this bag, but I assume it is very similar to the smaller one (besides size, obviously).

I've also heard many good things about Lowepro 450AW.

I recently backed the Boundary Errant on Kickstarter. It's due to arrive around November, but I purchased this bag as an "all-rounder" bag so I could start carrying my camera everywhere with me, such as Uni, as it has an optional camera insert. It's a little pricier but I believe it will be a bag that can last for ages.

I have sleeves for my laptops, my Wacom, even for a Thinkpad keyboard and I have various kinds of bags/backpacks. The 13.3-Inch sleeve I use for the keyboard is bigger but can be used with the C302. While I prefer to keep my stuff organized and safe, I realized that it's counterproductive to have a very slim Chromebook and then buy a bulky case or sleeve for transportation. I looked through all the offers on Amazon and other stores and couldn't find a convincing product worth its money. Typical sleeves like the ones I already have make the device twice has thick, special laptop (bag) cases are the same just thicker and less useful (more useless pockets, carrying handles and/or shoulder straps) and then there are the pretentious overpriced felt sleeves. If you are worried about scratches get one of these protectors called "skins" or get crafty and creative yourself. Sorry, did not see the second one. Hmm, i think the Aucase one might be a snugger fit. Plus its just a neoprene sleeve so there will be some flexibility to stretch. The Domiso one is 1.6in wider than the X220 so that may be too loose.

Here is my amazon basics 13.3in one. This one's dimensions are pretty close to the Aucase one.

AmazonBasics 13.3 inch laptop sleeve. I have a bag I use, since I have a lot to take to and from work, but the sleeve fits my Surface Pro 4 just fine, with enough room for a Logitech wireless USB sticking out of the right side of the surface, and the pen attached to the left side.

I've used these for tablets and other laptops, and have had no issues with them.

Personal advice?

Be very very careful, I bought a cooler master U3 and positioned the fans near the intakes and the dust on the matrix protecting the fans underneath my 17R3 was building up on lowest speed setting. Had to blast it all out.

Since moved the fans as far away as possible to cool the battery area under the touchpad and all good. I’ll never direct air at the intakes again, and the battery area is kept far cooler than without.

It will show you CPU temps.

Also, as far as cooling goes, I use this without the fans (on a desk): https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-NotePal-PLUS-Performance/dp/B00ED3WMTC/ref=dp_ob_title_ce - Its a bit big for this laptop, could probably go with the 2 fan version.

u/fch4 · 1 pointr/razer

Well, my Razer Blade 2016 was running quite hot playing Witcher 3, so I got this one from Cooler Master. I kind of looked at quite a few of these, and eventually decided that the best kind of cooling pad is a sturdy mesh that raises the laptop off the surface more than the little rubber feet on the Blade can. Somehow, I think that that accounts for the majority of the cooling. A lot of the other pads are sealed plastic boxes, where you have to hope the fans are efficient.

However, this thing does have three fans you can move freely around on the pad itself, so you can align it nicely with the air vents on the bottom. Also, the fan speed is adjustable, and you can locate the switch anywhere on the pad, since it is a clip on.

I did notice a significant difference in "touch temperature" playing Witcher 3 on the Blade, though I don't have any empirical data to back that up... Just another option to look at...

u/gthirst · 1 pointr/Alienware

I actually have that exact one, and have had it for a few years. I ran tests with it when I was running an M17x R1 and M18x R1 (a few years later). I can't find the numbers, but IIRC it resulted in about 10% lower temperatures. It also added a lot to dust build up. Ultimately, I think it is worth it, but I paid a lot less than what it is up for now. Also, with the newer Alienwares, the vents are less segmented so you could probably make do with one that has 1 big fan or 2 smaller ones. On the m17x/m18x with SLI/CFX there were 3 distinct spots for processor and 2 gfx cards.

u/1cmanny1 · 1 pointr/LifeProTips

I highly recommend this:

https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-NotePal-PLUS-Performance/dp/B00ED3WMTC/

I used to use a book and did so for years. It usually just wrecks the book and never lifted the laptop that high off the bed.

This thing is metal so sturdy and it tilts the back of the laptop up. You don't need the fans, but if you do need the extra cooling they aren't obtrusive at all. I wish I got one much sooner.

The main thing that damages batteries is heat. So this LPT will indeed help your laptops life.

u/YaCantStopMe · 1 pointr/Alienware

A cooling pad will definitely help, ive heard just raising the laptops back off the table a inch has helped thermals. I would look into a cooler like this though: https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-NotePal-PLUS-Performance/dp/B00ED3WMTC

The u3 is meant for 17 inch laptops, but you can grab the U2 which is the 15inch version but you will loose a fan. Ive used the cooler for years and its one of the best because you can move the fan exactly where you need it.

u/_Zell · 1 pointr/Alienware

I have the alienware backpack and have never had any problems with it leading to scratches or damage to my laptop (unless I dropped it once as I did with my last laptop, an L702x which required a massive backpack). I should note I tend to only put my laptop and charge in the big pocket with my books, papers, and clipboards in the other pockets. Especially important with the clipboard so I don't destroy the finish of my laptop!

You could sleeve it, but it will still be annoying to carry around unless you put it in your bookbag anyway.

For stands/cooling pads I use a Coolermaster U3 Plus, I almost never use the fans unless I am gaming, but I find the incline is perfect for making the laptop comfortable to type on!

u/Lurking_Commenter · 1 pointr/MSILaptops

Sorry for the thread necro. I got this one and it is excellent. I drilled out two holes at the bottom and installed two machine screws wrapped with plumbers tape to keep the laptop from sliding off the pad. I then added a pad on the bottom with a polyurethane cushion so it can sit comfortably on my lap.

Yeah the workaround is a PITA but I already did it like, 5 million times today so now I’ve got it memorized. It makes sense why you need it, as the menu key shows you what color you’re trying to use, but grr lol. Yeah I have a 90° cable for my iPhone and love it, but at least right now both my work and home setups work really well with a straight cable. A 90° angle would make things really complicated RE: desk space.

I also immediately flipped on dipswitch 3 and loooove using capslock+IJKL for the arrow keys. So much more logical and easy.

I got this case on Amazon and it’s really great. It’s recommended in the wiki here in this sub, too. It’s cheap and gets the job done - plus the pocket for cables/mouse is an added bonus. The Pok3r has a bit of wiggle room but nothing serious - especially when the case is really only there to prevent shit from getting under the keycaps.

Good luck in your internship!

It's this monitor arm with this notebook tray. It works pretty well. :) Just make sure your room/desk etc. has enough clearance. The setup does require some space behind the desk unless you want the monitors sticking all the way in front of your face.

EDIT: Added the item descriptions for posterity.

You could get a monitor mount + laptop tray and get a desktop podium/lectern for a separate mouse and keyboard.

If you get a dual monitor mount you can fab up a keyboard/mouse tray to use on the second monitor mount. Idk how sturdy it would be in actual use, though. I know Ergotron mounts allow you to tighten up the spring tension.

(laptop tray only - attaches to a monitor mount: https://smile.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Notebook-Arm-Mount-Tray/dp/B010QZD6I6 )

Hey man, same exact thing happened to me, except my laptop is shittier. I bought this laptop cooling pad off of Amazon and it worked like a charm. I wish I had a solution for you that didn't cost $25 but I'm telling you, before I had this my laptop would overheat almost nightly, and ever since I got this bad granny it hasn't happened once. In fact, I offset my laptop just a little bit, so that the exhaust is positioned over one of the fans, and the cooling pad even keeps that cool.

u/OutruntheWind · 1 pointr/ultrawidemasterrace

My laptop is a little less powerful than yours, but I ran into the same problem. I'm playing ESO, which isn't that demanding, but I have the settings turned up high. I was even running into the situation where my system's temperature would spike and automatically shut down. I've had to employ a few strategies to overcome this.

  1. Make sure the temperature in your room isn't too hot. If the ambient temperature is too warm, then there's almost nothing you can do to get the heat out of the machine fast enough. There were some hot days this summer that I just accepted the fact that I wasn't going to game until well after sunset.
  2. As others have mentioned, don't run both screens at the same time while gaming. I also work from home, and I find that my system can handle my daily work just fine on both screens, but gaming is a no go.
  3. When you're not using the laptop's built-in screen, don't close it. I assume you're using a regular keyboard when you're using your ultrawide, but leave the screen open so that the keyboard is exposed. This will allow some more of the heat your laptop is producing to escape from the top. If you don't already know it, you can press the winkey + p to quickly switch between monitor modes.
  4. I bought this cooling pad: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01469DJLM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. The 5 fans are nice, but the biggest plus is that it lifts so high off the table, which lets fresh air circulate down to the fan intakes.
  5. My laptop and the monitor are also under a hutch, so I also had a problem with the exhaust heat from the devices accumulating in the restricted space. I bought a little 5" clip-on fan that I use to force fresh air into the hutch and blow out the hot air.
u/KSledneck · 1 pointr/computers

You should seriously consider getting a model with more storage, 256GB minimum, 512gb preferably.

u/Silversee · 1 pointr/Surface

You'll want a Microsoft Surface Dock. Don't mess with cheaper USB docks: they don't provide a single wire connection, and only support emulated (rather than native) video. Performance and convenience will be a lot better with the real thing.

https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-PD9-00003-Surface-Dock/dp/B0163HP38W

If you buy the Surface Dock, make sure to update it to the latest firmware: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/surface-dock-updater

You can use either USB or Bluetooth keyboards and mice with your Surface. I like the Microsoft Surface keyboard and mouse, but any will work fine.

Re. displays: stick to displays that support DisplayPort connections if possible, and use a good quality miniDP to DP cable. If your display has only HDMI connections, you'll want a compatible active miniDP to HDMI adapter.

When you dock your Surface you'll have a choice of how to configure your display output: mirrored, extended desktop, or use the external display exclusively. Most people either extend their desktop or just use the external display. Either way, Windows 10 will automatically switch resolution and scaling.

If you want avoid the minor inconvenience of having to log off / on when docking / undocking (to fix scaling issues with older apps), then consider a 23-24" 4k display. At this size, you can run the display at the same scaling level as the Surface Book display (200%) to have a comfortable desktop. Since both displays are scaled the same, no compatibility issues are created for software.

Good luck.

The surface laptops have a special docking connector called SurfaceConnect ,which is supposed to have more bandwidth than USB 3.1, but I couldn't find a number in my quick google search. It seems like only microsoft has a decent dock with that connector but maybe look around. Could that dock replace the functions of the Aten dock that you linked?

Also what exactly do you need the blackjack dock for? SSDs? SD cards? In any case, I'm sure we can find something comparable. I quickly found this device, the Lexar Professional Workflow HR2. It's not cheap as you need to buy the card readers separately but it supports daisy chaining and should have enough bandwidth to not bottleneck even professional SD cards, I think. If you tell me exactly what kind of storage media you use, then we might be able to find a better solution. Edit: The amazon link isn't very informative about the device, this video is more helpful.

For sure worth getting more RAM, but should be okay to go.

However, I need to make one solid recommendation. The game makes computers run very hot. Especially laptops. I've got a dedicated gaming laptop and it runs most games very well. PUBG runs ever so hot though.

Seriously, if you are going to get PUBG, do your computer a favour and get one of these. It only costs 30 dollars and it made a massive improvement. Once the laptop gets hot enough, which is probably will, it will slow the game down.

I recommend this if you have side vents. It'll lower the temp around 20C, most I've heard was 28C

u/CentaurOfDoom · 1 pointr/computers

People say this is pretty good, depending on the internal layout of the laptop and they say is compatible with most laptops that have an exhaust vent out of the side.

I use the havit cooler and two opolar vacumn.

Vacumns work great, cooler not sure how much difference it actually makes but vacumn you can go hot to the touch to totally cool when touching the aluminum case above the keyboard.

I was having massive temp spikes, but I undervolted my PC a bit, bought these 2 crazy vacuum things for my laptop (sucks out the hot air) and I started playing the game windowed with my bottom start bar set to hidden

My temps were high 70s low 80s but are now 56 celsius across cpu and gpu (max 60), my frames are 50s 60s, I'm running on high not ultra. And my cpu usage isn't 100% anymore (it's 99 but small victories lol)

I7 8750H / Nvidia GTX 1060 running on SSD

Edit: here's the link to the vac thing I was talking about, I have 2 vents so I bought 2. There amazing. Had them both a month now, don't recommend using the "auto" function, just put it to manual and rock it on speed level 10 or 11 (max is 13)

Thanks for your response. No idea why I'm getting downvoted..

I recently ordered this:

https://www.amazon.com/Opolar-Laptop-Temperature-Display-Cooling/dp/B01E3Q7FS6

It seems like a pretty great product and I'm guessing it can get me around 15 degree centigrade drop in temperatures.

Would you advice against overclocking even this on?

u/suff3r_ · 1 pointr/Dell

I've gone through two G7s.

  1. The first one I returned because of the thermal throttling and the overheating. I tried underclocking with Throttlestop up to -144 hz but that didn't help. Also the build quality on the first one was lack luster, there was a slight gab between the keyboard chassis and the plastic sides. Lucked out though and got the AUO panel, which I was able to overclock to 90 hz.
  2. The second G7 I received has been much better. I did a fresh install of Windows on it from the start, getting rid of all the bloatware and whatever Dell uses to throttle the machine. I used Snappy Driver Installer to find drivers direct from manufacturers and I avoided downloading the Dell auto update tool and kept only critical Dell drivers (Ethernet, Wifi, etc). I also overclocked the CPU cache and core to 144 hz. Also lucked out, and got the AUO panel on the new one. And got it in Alpine White too (which is pretty damn good looking)

With the new G7, I'm hitting temps at around mid-70s with occasional highs into the mid-80s, but not often. Where as, the first machine would instantly hit the high 80s and throttle at round the early 90s. I have experienced some slight stuttering but I've come to terms that it's to be expected with gaming laptops.

To help combat even more of the heat, I've recently purchase one of these vacuum fans form Amazon, and I think it's been helping, keeping temps about 6 - 7 degrees lower about an hour into gaming. https://www.amazon.ca/OPOLAR-Laptop-Temperature-Display-Cooling/dp/B01E3Q7FS6

So far, it's a powerful machine for a lower price. It take a LOT of work to get it running the way you want it but so far I'm happy with the results.

If you overclock your laptop I suggest you get this.
My laptop would throttle when gaming at stock settings (no Turbo, went up to 90°C) but with that cooler I can overclock my GPU and enable Turbo on CPU with temps going to 80°C and no throttle and if I don't overclock my temps stay under 70°C.

OPLOLA LC06 does a pretty good job.On my toshiba if I remember correctly it cooled 8-10 degrees Celsius down but it will be noisy.I don't think it will fit with T430 so search to find something that will fit.It will definitely help in gaming and if you wear headphones or have the sound on will be no problem I think the sound of the fan.

I'd suggest something waterproof, such as this, even if you live somewhere relatively dry. I had a surprisingly large amount of rain right at the start of winter and it absolutely ruined my previous backpack (and its contents).

It's a decent bag that holds a fair amount, even has a USB port to allow you to hook up to a portable battery inside.

is there a big difference between the temperatures? around 5C or so?
also same with the screen size, is there a big difference between 15.6 and 17.3, id like to have a bigger screen ofcourse but im not sure how much of a difference it is, didnt buy a laptop ever before...
also could you suggest me a good laptop backpack for it? from amazon if possible :"3

Nothing is quite perfect! The Philips does look nice but doesn't have a VESA mount which is on my list of requirements.

This hub seems like it does everything I would want: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Multiport-DisplayPort-Ethernet/dp/B0746NKVBN 4k DisplayPort @60Hz, USB ports, and power delivery.

The fast ethernet seems hilariously out of date and I'll still need to get an extra 60W USB-C charger to enable the power delivery.

Still going to hang on for Prime Day to see if there's some price movement on any of these options.

there are two major approaches here:

a usb-c breakout with two display ports and a laptop which supports display-port alt mode on the usb-c port (not a mac which will just mirror both displays)

Honestly, I carry a Lenovo X1 and this CableMatters hub. We've also replaced all of our traditional docks with these things. They also make a dual HDMI version. They're great. We have a few T480's and a T490 kicking around, which IIRC have RJ45 ports. Highly recommend those models if you absolutely want the RJ45.

u/rafadev · 1 pointr/MatebookXPro

I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Multiport-DisplayPort-Ethernet/dp/B0746NKVBN/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=201055-BLK&qid=1555607877&s=gateway&sr=8-1 and it works even on linux with 2 displays (only tried 1080p but supposedly it should work even with 2 4k monitors).

u/DamageIncorporated · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

It's a really nice device and I've had no issues with it, but I can't help but feel underwhelmed given how much it costs. Keyboard feels good, screen is nice (if not just a little less sharp than 4k offerings, but this helps battery life), and the build quality is as good as it gets. And I love the minimalist, flat slab look to it.

But there are several other competitive options available now that offer more for less, like the Spectre x360, Yoga C940, and of course XPS 13. Those have their compromises as well (usually in QC), but they're also hundreds of dollars less for better specs, better port selection, and a 2-in-1 design.

I don't mind paying a premium, but the SL3 just doesn't feel future proof enough for me to do so. I actually just bought an X1 Carbon Gen 7 yesterday because they're heavily discounted for BF. With my work discount, the i7/16GB/1TB/4k model was just $1584. It's not as flashy as the other laptops I listed, but blows all of them out the water otherwise. If I hadn't got that, I probably would have looked at the Spectre next rather than the XPS.

And I only have two of my 1440p monitors hooked up to the SL3 for now, daisy chained via a single usb-c to display port cable. Haven't had any issues. Looks like I could have got the third hooked up with an adapter like this or the official surface dock.

u/mattaccount · 1 pointr/ultrawidemasterrace

Not much help from me I'm afraid.

After a lot of research it seems all the 'good' options are way too expensive right now. I ended up going with a cheap 3rd party dock and I'll be sticking with my 1440 regular monitor until a reasonable option to run an ultrawide at 60Hz or more from a laptop with USB-C power delivery comes out.

So far as I can tell you're basically just looking at thunderbolt docks when it comes to higher res at a reasonable refresh rate. Built-in USB-C docks on monitors were all lacking in some way. Even Lenovo's official ThinkPad docks either won't run anything above 1080 at 60Hz, or have strange problems when powering higher res displays (like the gen 2 thunderbolt dock powering off / overheating randomly).

I ended up with the following as a solution for now, plugged into a x280 ThinkPad. It works ok but having a non-detachable short cord kind of sucks. Also I don't think this would power an ultrawide at 60Hz+ either, but a 2560x1440 is fine. All in all I'm dissapointed but will probably look into future docks offered by Lenovo in about a year. The current offering _should_ work but so many people seem to have issues that it's just a non-starter for me right now. I did find a list of docks offered by Lenovo and their supported resolutions / refresh rates, but it's lacking in some information.

Good luck!

this is the best USB-C based product on the market because besides 4K @60Hz it also allows charging, network and USB 2.0 devices.

If you need dual 4K @60Hz you can either hook up two of these or buy a far more expensive TB3 dock

I heard this one is good. $63. 120 hz. Better colors, but its a TN panel so viewing angles are worse than an IPS panel. I heard that this one lets you change brightness, but not sure. 300 nits which I'd certainly appreciate since mine (2018) is below 250 nits.

https://www.amazon.com/Screen-Display-N156HHE-GA1-7RG-078US-Leopard/dp/B07CWSWX4Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1548253476&sr=8-2&keywords=N156HHE-GA1#customerReviews

Your main choices seem to be the Chi Mei N156HHE-GA1 Panel which is what I just mentioned above. Or the AUO B156HTN05.2 Panel which has no brightness control, worse colors, is difficult to find, also a TN panel. It goes up to 400 nits which is nice, but again you can't turn in down. At night 250 nits can be a lot so unless I was using it only during the day I'd go with the Chi Mei.

Comparison.

Unfortunately I have not seen a 120 hz IPS panel for the Dell G7. Otherwise I would've replaced it myself ages ago. Hopefully another commentor know about one, but for now those are your options.

I have the same model only I paid a little less. The gaming experience is like night and day I swear it feels like a brand new laptop. The colors are much better and the screen is more vibrant, you can tell this is a high quality display. Oh and another thing I forgot to mention is that you will have to set a custom resolution to 120hz using the CRU (custom resolution utility) because the Intel custom resolution tool doesn't work. Just set it to 1080p 120hz, reboot, and you'll never have to touch it again. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CWSWX4Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_tRMTCbEG5GADH
