I can relate. This is how I've acquired 50 boxes of salmiakki.

This "double salt" Dutch salty liquorice candy has lots of 1-star reviews. People found it too salty for their taste.

Another interesting edible salt is ammonium chloride. Traditional salted Dutch licorice drops are flavored with ammonium chloride, and they taste a bit like Windex. Completely harmless though.

Yeah, this to be specific:

Like I said, I swear this stuff is catnip to the Icelandic devs. They'd swarm the bowls.

Buy him some black liquorice candy. You'll probably not want to taste it, but he'll hopefully love it. You could also look into other food items that are hard to get in Canada.

Looking at the Amazon US site, if you're not familiar with the different types of Finnish salmiakki, there's a 4-pack that would let you try different types:4 Boxes X 38g of Fazer Super Salmiakki Mix ((2) salmiakki - (1) super salmiakki - (1) pantteri) Original Finnish Salty Licorice

The "Fazer Ässä Salmiakki" is a sweet salmiakki, not as bitter if you don't like that.

Also great are the "Fazer Tyrkisk Peber"
I find them addictive, and they have a great burning sensation from the ammonium chloride (Latin sal ammoniacus, from which the name salmiakki comes)

Be warned though, it's an acquired taste and very different from North American candies:
Americans Try Finnish Candy: Tyrkisk Peber Turkinpippuri Salmiakki

If you're ever in Finland, definitely try Apteekin salmiakki, and the Fazer salmiakki ice-cream!

Have you tried popcorn? Do you prefer salted or sweet?

Have you ever tried marmite?

What is the ickiest food ever?

Hey, there's this amazing sweet called Salmiakki (literally, salted liquorice), you should try it some time! There's this website called "Youtube" - I'm sure they'd love to see you trying sweets from around the world! You could be famous!

u/Drayvock · 3 pointsr/funny

Anyways! Please tell me which ones you get and then get back to me after you've tried them and tell me what you think. I'm super curious about your experience and how you'll find REAL licorice rather than that kids stuff you've been eating.

u/joey_p1010 · 2 pointsr/Finland

This is what I ordered

I’d rank the classic salmiakki number 1, the super Salmiakki number 2, and the pantteri last. They were all really good though!

u/Pippyg · 2 pointsr/LPOTL

Have you tried that double salted black licorice? It's other worldly in its horridness.

u/aleyp58 · 2 pointsr/snackexchange

You can find this in Northern Europe, Germany and Turkey. I've seen some in Finland and Denmark. They go by other names. This picture is the Danish one. It's essentially Turkish pepper aka a kind of licorice. You might have a better chance with the English name. FAZER is a Finnish company.

Salted Licorice. I had a friend growing up whose mother was Dutch and used to get these ZALTA DROPS delivered. The come in regular and double salt. While they are an acquired taste, sometimes I get a hankering for one.

Search Amazon. I even found the ones you are looking for. I just typed in Salmiakki. You can also find Marianne and Kismet by searching for Finnish Candy.

Would you kindly gift me The Walking Dead?

My fondest gaming memory would be the first game I ever played-Diablo II with my dad. We never really had anything in common when I was growing up, and out of the blue one day he bought 2 copies of the game and asked if I wanted to play with him. I was reluctant because I wasn't really into gaming or anything, but it was AWESOME! We really enjoyed it and played together quite a bit. Anyway, red vines always remind me of playing Diablo with my dad because he had this huge tub of them right next to the desks and would snack on them while we played :)

Never mind Salmiakki - tell me where to find Fazer lemon liquorice sticks at a reasonable price. You can get them here (UK), but they are unbelievably expensive.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Pretzel M&Ms. It seems like they're generally disliked just because they replaced Crispy M&Ms. Oh, if only people could overcome their chocolatey prejudice and see the salty goodness within.

I also enjoy Katjes Salzige Heringe, which are a bit of an acquired taste. My taste buds are basically the Land of Misfit Candies.
