i have these magnetic sheets from an earlier project. one side has an adhesive backing.
i cut the bags/graphics a bit bigger than i want the final magnet, stick it to the magnet, and trim with an x-acto. if the bag or sticker is paper (not water resistant), i'll add a layer of clear laminate to protect it a bit.

Then I emptied out an old pencil case, and cut the magnet to be the right size. Pressed it into the bottom, and voila!
$6.99 for 3 sheets of 8x15:

The magnets are 1/2 inch wide and I needed 1/4 inch so I cut it lengthwise whenever I needed it. Hope that helps!

This is a bit lengthy, but I will try to get across all the different combat tools and ideas that I have ended up using to help me stay organized and efficient in combat.
To start, I use a homemade magnetic initiative tracker. Only costs about $5 to make. I got an 8x12 galvanized steel shingle from Home Depot for a dollar, and some magnetic tape that I wrote the Character names on. Then made some spare blank magnetic name tags that I put tape on for dry erase markers to write enemies on. I just slid this into a paper slot of my DM screen. It could also simply be held on via strong magnet on the other side of the screen.
Then I just use sticky notes to track different damage on the NPC's. If they are weak I will have 2-3 on one sticky note or use just one if it's something big. Side note I add up to their health in a fight as I can do addition faster then subtraction in my head.
The sticky notes are also nice for writing down the names of spontaneously created NPC's, places, etc.
Another thing is that I got a cheap Chess set and used the pieces for the enemy NPCs. Though they could be used for both if you want. Then I just wrote numbers on the pieces to make keeping track of them easier. Here is an example of the chess pieces I use at the end of one of my sessions. As you can see I have also adopted the lego character figurine idea.
If possible I try to print the enemy Stats before hand, and if not I have 3 bookmarks in my monster manual for keeping multiple types of enemy stats readily available. I made this to make keeping track of generic enemy humanoids simpler. I used this to help with the encounter pictured earlier. I used the different types of pieces to signify the different stat blocks, and black and white to signify good and bad guys.

I actually used magnetic sheets.
They have an adhesive side but I just stapled them to the wall using a thin caliber staple gun. To be honest I even cut those sheets in half and spaced them about a few inches apart. They are surprisingly strong and could hold more than 1 steelbook easily with half a sheet.
I used this, two strips on each about 2 inches long. Holding well so far! I used pretty much the entire roll for all of these.

I used those sheets and cut them into 4 evenly pieces. They're adhesive magnetic sheets so 1 side you use to stick on the wall, and the other side you stick the steel books to.
I used some extra tape to prevent the adhesive tape to fall off due to the weight of the steel books. The magnets themselves are very strong so it really holds them in place.

Once in a while you can see the adhesive fail due to the weight of the steel books hence the use of tape for reinforcement.

The base magnets are the cheap-o stick on magnets you can get on Amazon for pennies a piece (such as here: https://www.amazon.com/Flexible-Magnets-Magnetic-Adhesive-Backing/dp/B076DVBZTX).

I use solid resin bases from dragonforge.com (excellent), and just stick the stickers on the bottom (with a drop of super glue). I cut them to fit more on. But that's pretty much it.
What I would up getting was the following:
It is $12.99, and 14 ½x30 ¾. It will fit ten steelbooks, in the format I have shown, or horizontal.
8.5” X 11” sheets, you will get two steelbooks out of one sheet, with some left over; not enough to cover another steelbook though. You will have to cut out to size what you need.
These are 16lbs rated. I placed four on each side of it (top and bottom) and it’s holding well.
I will warn you, the board with the steelbooks is HEAVY.

I usually turn everything i make into a magnet with those sheets, they work really well, but they do tend to fall off when the perler warps a bit, so i use glue to make sure they stay on.
Magnetize them; buy a kit for doing so from Amazon...that and a metal used lap desk or playing card surface and you're on your way
Two decks of taro cards, some glue, scissors and patience and you should be able make a magnetic "tarot sandwich", albeit, ending up with a thicker card...

I got it on Amazon.com, as a roll of magnetic tape. I had to cut it up into appropriate length pieces, then lay it out flat and put some heavy books on it to get it to stop trying to roll back up. And then it still tried to, so I keep the sheets stored face-down when I'm not using them, and that's gotten it to flatten out better.

Don't use double sided tape, it won't last long, and will leave a sticky mess behind.
Buy some good magnet tape like this, and cut it to be thin- so that the magnet a little thinner than the lights. might take a little experimenting to get the cutting thickness right, but when you do, it's perfect.
If the adhesive on the magnets doesn't hold well, a Plastic UV epoxy/glue like bondic will keep it there, permanantly.

Maybe use adhesive magnetic tape? The reviews say that the hold generally sucks, but that doesn't matter if you're using rare earth magnets on the headphones rather than just a plate of non-magnetic steel.
Two words: "magnetic tape". Comes pre-glued my friend. Only trouble is that it comes in rolls usually, so you might pre-cut and flatten with some heavy books. Not all tape is created equal either. The thicker the magnet the better the staying power. I got some flimsy 3m tape at Walmart in a pinch once and it wouldn't even hold up tiny 1" foam squares.

I wonder if two strips of magnetic tape in the top hem would work for the opening. It's pretty flexible, but would stiffen up a bit when stuck together, and is probably easy to roll up. I have some at work. Might try it out tomorrow.
As far as sewing skill, it's just practice. Set up the next few inches of what you're about to sew, and feed it through smoothly at a constant speed. Use something as a visual guide, either the edge of the foot, or a mark on the machine, or a piece of masking tape with a measured line drawn for your seam allowance.
If you just want sewing practice without wasting a bunch of expensive fabric, you could probably use cheap blue tarps from the hardware store. If you don't want to be wasteful, make some reusable grocery bags or something? That's an easy project to practice design, construction, top stitching, rolled hems, and handles. (Tip: Make a U-Panel style bag with a single front/bottom/back panel, and two side panels.)

That looks great. One thing I use on mine is a piece of stick on magentic strip along the edge of the top tier. I can tie a dozen flies, and cement all the heads at once. Plus, it keeps them from getting knocked around.

So far I've had luck with using squares I've cut from Adhesive Magnetized Sheets to hold plastic infantry to my metal-bottomed toolkit. I add a spot of white glue to help out the magnetic sheet adhesive.

It's really easy and inexpensive to make them. Check this out. Instead of sewing them, I used 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive and magnetic strips.
Any craft store (Michael's, JoAnn, the dreaded Hobby Lobby, and probably even Lowe's or Home Depot for some things) will do as well as Amazon if you can wait a few days for shipping.

The adhesives on those are usually kinda crappy so I'd suggest maybe pulling the tape off and adding your own adhesive of choice.
Also the flexible magnets tend not to be super strong so you might need to use a bit more than you would think.

How much clearance do you need?
You can use magnetic tape to secure the glass panel to the case. The tape I linked is 2mm thick so you can get additional 4mm by using this tape on the glass and the case. It likely wouldn't be as secure as the original mounting mechanism. but it should be fine if you are not moving the case around.

What about magnets? Stick a small one in the bottom of each hex and on the base, lay strips of magnetic tape on a sheet of MDF or foam core or whatever you want to use as a base. MDF might be better because you could use a router to make tracks for the magnetic tape so that the surface is flush.
i wasn't too worried about getting the glue off the back of the pots because i intended to glue magnets to the back anyway. there's all sorts of stuff you can use other than z palettes, have fun with it.

A magnetic dry erase board and magnetic tape for tracking initiative. We cut strips of the tape for each character and sharpie the character name on it, then I drew little skulls on the side of six more. Then when initiative is rolled we just write the number in dry erase and move them accordingly. The included magnetic eraser can indicate the current turn, or another piece of tape can be decorated! We also ended up making custom status markers for spell effects and the like.
