sleeping with 5 blankets and jackets is brutal. I live in a cold climate and a couple years ago I bought an electric mattress pad. I put it on a wifi outlet and it comes on at 9pm and turns off at 5am. My home's heat drops down to 50 at night and comes back on in the AM.

This is amazing, it costs about $2-3 a month to power the heated mattress pad & you'll be nice and toasty all night. Makes no sense to heat the whole house while you're sleeping - but don't punish yourself either.

This is what I recommend: https://www.amazon.com/Biddeford-5902-908221-100-Electric-Heated-Mattress/dp/B000JI3GYU

u/gamingloser · 13 pointsr/BuyItForLife

You would be better off buying a down blanket to keep you warm at night. They come in various thicknesses, so make sure you get a nice one.

I don't think you will ever find an electric blanket that last forever. By it's very nature (being electronic) it will eventually break. If you must buy one, I would stick with a Sunbeam. I prefer a mattress pad over a blanket since heat rises and the shock of a cold mattress sucks.

Some people still use the hot water bottles/bladders. I imagine they last a very long time.

u/johnsmithindustries · 5 pointsr/Frugal

They aren't cheap, but a good one will last you a long time and save you a bundle.

I actually recommend a heated mattress pad versus a blanket, because the heat will rise through and warm your sheets but get trapped by your comforter - keeping the heat next to you. I have the queen size version of this one and it is amazing. It helped me survive winter at school when we had the thermostat at 58 almost all the time. It makes enough heat that just sitting in bed was really comfy, so I would end up doing all of my homework in bed.

u/Dyan654 · 5 pointsr/cuboulder

If you’re in a 4 bedroom, they’re normal fulls! I don’t know about the other ones. Pro tip - the mattresses are slightly better than the dorms, but still pretty shit. Buy this mattress topper from Amazon, and these sheets from Target, and it’ll be the best sleep you’ve ever had.

u/jackelfrink · 5 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

Well, there are window air conditioners. but you said the bed specifically and not the room so I am going to assume that is not what you want.

There is also ChiliPad. Its like an air conditioner crossed with a blanket. But that's way outside your price range.

Switching from polyester bedsheets to cotton can help some.

In a pinch, you could go all hillbilly and just freeze a 2-liter filled with water and keep it in the bed with you.

u/txeskimo17 · 4 pointsr/Fibromyalgia

That is wonderful how much you want to help and support her; she will definitely appreciate it.

These are what I use:

Blanket: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B008BF2392/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Mattress Topper: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G72DN63/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

What is nice about that mattress topper is it has 2 zones so you can heat one side of bed without having to heat other side. The mattress topper is also great at soothing all-over body aches since you're laying on top of it; feels amazing to crawl into after a long day.

There's also a really good book about Fibro, written by a doctor who has the disease herself. It's laid out in easy to understand language and includes both conventional and alternative treatment methods. The book is a must-read for sufferers, their loved ones, and even their health care providers. My review of this book would be: Before reading the book, I was genuinely ready to kill myself because I felt it was hopeless to try and cope with this disease for another 50+ years. Reading her book I've been able to find ways to improve my circumstances and now feel motivated to fight the disease as several of her methods have already made a huge difference in my life. https://smile.amazon.com/FibroManual-Complete-Fibromyalgia-Treatment-Doctor/dp/110196720X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=GYD3ZCYHN0PS&keywords=the+fibro+manual+by+ginevra+liptan&qid=1569526359&s=gateway&sprefix=the+fibro+ma%2Caps%2C134&sr=8-1

If you think it is your mattress, you could use the process of elimination. Move your mattress into the hall for a couple of days, or seal it in a mattress bag. If that gets rid of the smell, it may be time for a new bed. If not, continue eliminating possible sources; keep dirty clothes in a sealed container for a while. Sooner or later, you'll figure it out.

u/omg_pwnies · 3 pointsr/AskVet

For just a little bit more, you can heat your whole mattress, making a huge warm bed for you and your cats. https://www.amazon.com/Mattress-Underblanket-Controller-Flannel-Settings/dp/B07G72DN63/ref=sr_1_5?s=bedbath&ie=UTF8&qid=1542614532&sr=1-5&keywords=heated+mattress+pad

Our cats love it and we love it too. So toasty and comfy.

Best of luck to you and your cat-buddy. :D

This but keep in mind you’ll have to make some cuts. It’s extra wide but not long enough. Had to use the extra width I cut to make it the perfect length. But pretty dam ez. I’d say 15 minutes tops for this project.

u/skrenename4147 · 3 pointsr/overlanding

I have this exact setup and use one of these. It fits almost perfectly and sleeps two for when my wife comes along, or folds in half to be twin-bed sized if it's just me. Not super durable but very comfortable over the past year or two so far.

u/sayyestolycra · 3 pointsr/January2018Bumpers

I just use normal sized pillows, between my thighs, against my back to lean against, and one to hug/lean forward against. I like the normal pillows bc they're easy to configure in different ways depending on any aches or pains I'm feeling.

I also got this foam pad to put on top of my mattress bc we have a super firm mattress, and sleeping on my side was really hurting my hips and shoulders. It doesn't look like much, but that pad helped soooo much. I sleep much more soundly now, and I've even been having less nightmares and waking up on my back less. Plus it's only a bit more than half the width of a double mattress, so my husband can still have his firm mattress while my side is softer.

u/jaggederest · 3 pointsr/HumansBeingBros

Hey brother I feel you on sleeping when it's too hot. Check out this thing, I'm not selling it I just have one and it's made my life so much easier:

https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Technology-ChiliPad-Cube-Temperature/dp/B00JMLFMV0/

I used to sweat through my sheets multiple times a night and this totally solved it. It's expensive and a pain in the ass but nothing else fixed the problem. Saves me a bundle on AC and keeps my cats from freezing to death.

u/gridirongamer · 3 pointsr/insomnia

I bought one of these cooling mattress pads. It works best if the air temperature in the room is cooler so if your room is already at 63 degrees, it should work pretty well.

u/Slugged · 2 pointsr/philadelphia

They're like $6 on Amazon, or any home improvement or big-box retail store should have them.

u/Laliy55 · 2 pointsr/buyamattress

I found a good mattress store on amazon, maybe you can found one from it. People usually buy 8-inch or 10-inch mattress. This mattress i share you is a 10-Inch Gel-Infused memory foam mattress, or you can buy a 8-inch mattress like this, which is a innerspring mattress with soft foam layer fire barrier fabric. Hope you found what you want.

They can be. It depends on what you consider expensive to be when compared to some potentially crazy expensive spring or foam mattresses. A basic bed is around $300. A "fine furniture" waterbed can be $1000 to $2000+, but so can a dresser or table.

You typically buy the waterbed frame as one purchasing decision, then select a waterbed mattress to go into it. A waterbed mattress must have a purpose made waterbed frame to hold it. You cannot put a waterbed mattress on a standard bed frame. You can also buy a cheaper waterbed kit that comes with everything.

A typical lower cost waterbed kit would look like this. I would highly recommend getting a full-motionless mattress, which has layers of foam inside of the mattress to dampen any waves and get rid of the sloshing feeling when you roll around or sit up.

You then need to decide if you want to sleep on the mattress directly, or get a pillow top cover for it. I like a "marshmallow" soft bed, so I use a thick pillow top cover over the mattress. If you don't have a thick comforter of some kind between you and the mattress, then the mattress will need to be heated. Sleeping on a cold waterbed mattress is really bad for you. A heater usually comes with a waterbed kit.

A waterbed is a hassle to setup. They are heavy and clunky and take time to get settled, but they are pretty much maintenance free after that. I absolutely love them. Do some research and watch some videos and reviews before buying.

u/KindlyJuice · 2 pointsr/breakingmom

I sleep on the floor. It's ok because I actually like sleeping on a rock hard surface and our bed is way too soft for me. I sleep next to the bed because snoring is not the main problem. I just don't like sharing a bed and every single time he rolls over or gets up to use the bathroom it wakes me up.

The snoring is sporadic, though. Typing this made me remember a couple of times when I ended up sleeping on the floor of the baby's room, or even in the hallway, when the snoring was bad. And yet many nights there is no snoring at all.

Maybe considering something like this that stores away and you could take it to any room you want.

Or kick him out and make him sleep on the couch.

I have the Avocado which looks like virtually the identical specs. It is a firm mattress! I’ve tried the 2” 14-19 ILD Avocado topper in their showroom and I just sink down all the way through it @ 160lbs. I have a 3” 24 ILD Dunlop topper on my Avocado currently and it supports me well. So I would recommend 3” if that’s an option. I’m still on the fence about going softer. I would probably try an ultra soft 3” latex topper from Mayers Bedding next. Also, I have this memory foam topper bookmarked as an super-duper-ultra soft option. The YouTube review I saw said it takes 3 full points off the firmness of a mattress. Just something to keep in mind if you want to aggressively knock down the firmness of the mattress. I’m saving it as my “nuclear option” 🙂.

Glad you found my experience useful. Depending on your setup, you might find the below mattress useful. It folds up and you can use it as a seat. You might want to go with a full-blown mattress for more comfort, but this is a great space-saver, and pretty comfortable for what it is. Good luck.

Honestly I just got mine on Amazon and I sprung for one that was bigger than 1in thick. I think I have this one (or something extremely similar.)

u/GypsyKylara · 2 pointsr/BabyBumps

I have a pillow top mattress and it was still too hard for me. I just bought this matress topper (cheapest I could find) and it has been great so far. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GP4RJUO/ref=br_it_dp_o_nS_ttl?ie=UTF8&colid=1YP2GC46XU3TM&coliid=I1Z763XW2AU7JR&vs=1

I also have a pillow between my legs and one under my bump and one behind my back to kind of prop me up.

Something like this!

u/FortyandLifeToGo · 1 pointr/priusdwellers

Guys, I bought this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071X7C4TB/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm not a big guy (5'11" 157lbs) and my arms kept falling off the sides, so unless you are a side sleeper or level the area around this particular mattress, your arms will sag off the sides.

So I then went and bought this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018APB3TI/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And found it to be so much better in terms of my arms being able to rest at my sides...but even more how much more lower back support I was given vs that of the tri-fold. The tri-fold felt like it was actually straining my back due to lack of support so I had to put my https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014AQ90A0/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 under it, and that only marginally helped.

So I'm ditching the tri-fold.

My cat keeps peeing on my bed. I come home every night to a wet bed so am sleeping on the floor. I would really, really love a plastic sheet to go over my bed so I can sleep on my bed at night. Thank you for the contest!

Other poster is right though, back sleeping is better. I'm still in the struggle of switching :(

u/specialopts51 · 1 pointr/WeMo

No problem. The important part is that you have to get a heated mattress pad with a mechanical on/off switch. I got this one. Each side has a control mechanism so we actually got two WeMOs so we could each control our own side. I'm extremely happy with the purchase.

u/Shortelle · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I'm saving up to buy the twin mattress topper and the full mattress topper on my Household Wishlist. My mattress sucks and my daughter's mattress sucks and we want to be comfortable but we really can't afford new mattresses right now. It's a crime how expensive mattresses are!! lol

The other thing I'm saving up for isn't really a need but I would love it. It's on my Reading Nook/Comfort zone wishlist because I want to create my own little zone in my room. lol It's this and it looks so amazingly comfortable! I think if I had it, I would lay in it forever.

Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis When I was dead broke, man I couldn't picture this.

Speaking of which, I got a 'Japanese-style futon mattress' on amazon and it's worked great. Obviously meant to be folded in up to ~90 degrees (though with my build it doesn't get past like ~135). I'm sleeping on mine full-time so I threw a 2" memory foam topper on for extra padding and it's worked great. The only thing I'll say is that the futon might be a little more difficult to cut (if you don't fit in one of the standard sizes like I did) since it'll require some sewing, but still entirely possible. You'll have no problem with any modifications to the memory foam

I was looking at this device as recommended by Tim Ferris.

>ChiliPad — A heating/cooling mattress pad. You simply place this under your bed sheets and it circulates water through the pad. What’s intriguing about this system is that it features duel-zone temperature setting. If your partner desires a warmer temperature while you desire a cooler temperature, this will help solve that. It’s not cheap but given the potential benefits this could have on your health, I’d say it can be truly priceless.

I moved up from the south 2 years ago and had the same questions for /r/boston

In typical fashion.......they did the same thing they are doing to you. Laughing, and being dicks instead of trying to help.

My place was old, the heaters were not working, and their were leaking windows everywhere. I bought this

Caulking Cord

and

window kit

and

Heater

I very legally could have gone to the housing authority and reported my landlord for the lack of adequate heating (and broken radiators) but decided that this stuff worked just fine. First winter I couldn't get the house above 62, and some rooms I am sure were much colder. The electric and gas bill was insane.

Second year we just don't even bother using the radiators at all, we use the space heater, a heating blanket, and sealed all the windows and doors (balcony) with that caulk. The house was still cold, but we were warm. This seems to be a common tactic up here, heat yourself not the house.

I also looked into buying one of these bed heater, but I don't want to sweat in the middle of the night and the bedroom is pretty easy to heat with that space heater.

Good luck. Also, most people up here can be dicks when it comes to heating/cold complaints. Just sit back and laugh at what these people call a severe thunderstorm, most of them would shit their pants if they ever experienced a regular summer storm in the south.

u/di3gopa · 1 pointr/Mattress

You have a couple of options, but as morgf said, you should probably try them out if you can before getting them to see which one feels better to you.

A couple of options:
Latex: http://www.mattresses.net/latex-mattress-topper-latex-core.html

Memory Foam: https://www.amazon.com/ViscoSoft-Density-3-Inch-Memory-Mattress/dp/B00XKJKKGW

Latex will last more, but at the same time is more expensive. It really depends on what makes you feel better. I would suggest to go on a 3" topper instead of a 2" topper, it will give you probably that softer/plush feeling you are looking for. On the latex one, you should get the soft version mattresses.net offer. http://www.mattresses.net/queen-3-inch-natural-talalay-latex-mattress-topper.html

u/Unidentified_Remains · 1 pointr/camping

If you have the room to spare, this is a beast. its almost as comfortable as a full on memory foam mattress. Its certainly not back packable, but my "car camping" host is a '76 Suburban, so I got the room (for 2).

u/whorebaths · 1 pointr/DIY

Well, depending on how much you want to spend, there are a few options.

Legitimate acoustic foam might be outside of your price range, but that would be the best choice if you want serious sound-dampening. This is just an example website. I imagine there may be a music equipment store near you that would either stock the stuff, or be able to direct you to a local supplier if you don't want to buy online.

Second, mattress toppers! They work pretty well, and you could—if you're okay with how fucking gross they may be—pick some up second-hand, or just order some online/buy new stuff at a discount shop.

Another option may be to procure some paper egg cartons, preferably the 24-egg type. They baffle sound quite well, and you might even be able to take used cartons from restaurants or hotel kitchens, if you ask nicely. Just staple that shit to the walls, and you've got yourself a free sound-proof(ish) studio space.

Hope that helps.

So this isn't gel but if you can afford it or have really generous gifters I love Tempurpedic.

Here is an example of the gel and they come in all different inches.
